Sky adds “security”

Sky viewers will have noticed that adverts for a new security and insurance service called Sky Protect are being aired, but what is it?

Not content with providing your TV platform, broadband and mobile contracts, Sky has now moved into the home security and insurance sector with the the launch of Sky Protect. It’s no surprise as US cable companies have been in the alarm business for some time, but this is not quite the same.

In partnership with Zurich Insurance the package includes some home security tech (valued at £250 by Sky) including a video doorbell, leak detectors, plus motion and contact sensors. Events are recorded and viewed via an app with incidents stored in the Cloud (with no news on any additional cost of this).

Stephen van Rooyen, CEO, Sky UK & Ireland and CCO, Sky Group, said: “We already make people’s lives easier at home through our TV, broadband and mobile services and with Sky Protect, we’ll be able to take the pain out of home insurance. From a simpler quotation process, to value you can see every day, to great tech, all working together in the Sky Protect app. We believe people deserve better when it comes to home protection – so we’re going to give it to them.”

It all sounds great until you think about what is actually being offered with this package. It is not a home security system at all, rather a basic self-monitored web-based setup. Quite how the two sides of the service will work together is not made clear. We reached out to Sky but had not heard back by the time of going to press regarding whether there was any reliance upon evidence gathered by the kit for claims and if so, what happens when the broadband goes down? Will Sky be liable? That there is actually no connection between the two sides of the package seems more likely, but they are hitting the ad breaks quite heavily without giving away too much info. The involvement of the insurer Zurich is a more interesting development for security providers.

IDIS and Costar announce merger agreement for growth

IDIS and Costar Technologies have announced the execution of a definitive agreement and plan of merger pursuant to which Costar will be acquired by IDIS in a merger transaction.

The Merger Agreement has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of each of IDIS and Costar. Completion of the Merger will be subject to approval by the stockholders of Costar. The board of directors of Costar has recommended that Costar stockholders approve the transaction

and adopt the Merger Agreement at a special meeting of the stockholders of Costar to be called in connection with the merger transaction. Stockholders collectively holding approximately 45% of the outstanding shares of Costar common stock have entered into voting and support agreements pursuant to which they have agreed, among other things, to vote their shares of Costar common stock in favour of the merger transaction. The merger is expected to close during the second quarter of 2023, subject to approval by the Costar shareholders and the satisfaction of customary conditions to closing.

FIRE Conference to take place in October in London

The hybrid event will address the new scope of meeting building safety expectations, the future of certification, and keeping pace with new legislative change and sustainable developments. It will also provide an update on the progress of the national fire strategy white paper, produced by the Fire Sector Federation Fire Strategy Board and launched at FIRE 2022, which seeks a framework to effectively manage fire risk to help achieve a sustainable and safer society.

This year’s conference will be chaired by Broadcaster, Sima Kotecha. Commenting on FIRE Conference 2023, Sima said: “Events like this are pivotal to professionals working in fire and showcases developments and a hopeful future in the sector. Paxton’s test facility is renamed as Brighton EMC

Brighton EMC is the new brand for what was called The Paxton Test Facility, which provides UKAS accredited EMC testing services to electronic product manufacturers.

Brett Glass, Compliance Manager at Brighton EMC, said: “Rebranding to Brighton EMC gives us greater visibility and recognition as an independent UKAS accredited test facility, providing reliable EMC testing services to manufacturers.”

Brighton EMC is located in Paxton’s Technology Centre in Brighton. In addition to EMC testing, the company has Environmental Chambers to test the impact to products from environmental factors, and equipment to carry out Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), surge, transients, and power quality tests.

New fire and security apprenticeship for Wales

The Fire and Security Association (FSA) and the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB) have welcomed Welsh Government’s approval of a new Apprenticeship Pathway in Fire and Security.

This completes the mission of the fire, emergency and security systems (FESS) sector to make a specialist apprenticeship available to employers and learners in every part of the UK.

Tom Brookes, FSA Chair, said: “The new apprenticeship in fire and security marks an important step forward for FESS standards in Wales. As such, it represents a fantastic achievement for the close and effective partnership on competence and skills now developing between Welsh Government and industry employers. We look forward to seeing this partnership continue to grow and strengthen further over time.”

Trevor Jenks, SSAIB National Training Manager, said: “SSAIB are delighted to have been involved in the development of the new Welsh Apprenticeship Pathway, which both aligns with the UK-wide FESS Technician Standard and respects Wales’s specific training identity and norms.”

Development of this apprenticeship, which was jointly funded by FSA and SSAIB, has come as a direct response to employer demand in Wales. Employers were also closely involved in the steering group which oversaw the development process.

Welsh apprentices and employers will benefit from the curriculum aligned with UK-wide technical and occupational competence standards. The apprenticeship features two qualifications which have now been designated by Qualifications Wales: the EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems, and the EAL Level 3 Knowledge Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems. On completion, individuals will achieve UK FESS Technician status and entitlement to apply for a gold card under the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS).

Significantly, the establishment of this new benchmark also provides a route for the existing workforce in Wales to upskill from Operative to gold card Technician level when the FESS Experience Worker Assessment route becomes widely available later this year across the whole UK.

Wales’s Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething said: “This new apprenticeship will raise standards across the fire, emergency and security systems industry and make a significant contribution to the competence and skills of the workforce in Wales. The fact the apprenticeship was jointly developed across the sector is testament to the value and strength of collaborative working in meeting industry needs.”

Getting started

The front cover of the door unit is secured by four non-captive T20 security Torx screws. Two plastic hinge assemblies allow the front panel to be moved out from the rear housing to gain access to all connections and configuration links.

The included power supply is a rail mountable 100 to 240v AC input to 12v DC 1.25A unit, with output variable from 10.8 to 13.8v. Programming of the 4903 module can be performed at a simple level via the keypad using a 6-digit Engineer code to gain access. This allows two codes to be entered to release the Relay 1 and 2 contacts. For more complex setup and management, the Videx GSMSK PC software is used. This is supplied on CD and / or memory stick, however care must be taken to follow the correct loading instructions for the USB driver and software as the supplied documentation included some legacy information that refers to alternative files that are also included. The instructions in document 66251720 V2.2 20/06/2022 identifies the correct process, although this document was not included on the CD or memory stick.

Instructions for “over the air” remote connection are provided for 4G linking of the software to the unit.

Alternatively, many of the programming commands can be sent to the unit using SMS commands.

Quick install and programming guides

The Videx 4000 Series is a flexible modular audio call system capable of supporting up to 50 buttons. The supplied housing contained two modules, a 4810/4G Intercom and a 4903 Keypad. A wide range of alternative keypad layouts are available including the 4903 which has a 12-button telephone style key layout. The intercom is designed for 4G networks but is also compatible with 2G and 3G networks.

The unit has a solid feel to it with very positive blue backlit mechanical buttons. It can work in a combination of standalone and GSM operation

With the unit unpowered, a nano sized SIM card should be fitted into the socket beneath a peel-off sticker just below the antenna connector. The supplied antenna has a magnetic base, 3 metre cable, and a secure right-angle wall-mounting bracket. The USB connector is at the lower left of this module for connection to the PC for initial setup.

An RS485 connection bus allows up to 8 devices to be connected to expand the system for additional proximity readers and keypads. Two auxiliary inputs allow for “Push to Exit” button or auxiliary inputs.

Menu options

The PC software has a conventional Windows layout with options accessed from Tabs ranged near the top of the information screen. These are:

SETTINGS: General, including volume and master code, Auto time correction, Call and Relay times.

CALL SETUP: Button number allocation and naming.

DIAL TO OPEN: Main and Temporary “dial to opens” numbers.

PROX: Proximity tag configuration and naming.

CODES: Main and Temporary (time limited) code entry.

EVENTS: Display and saving of event log data. ENTRANCE NAMES: Naming details.

The various tabs are used to add or update details, and these can be uploaded to the panel from a Data option by tab group or for the whole system. The configuration can also be downloaded from the panel and then be saved to the PC.

The program window includes an image of a mobile phone whose keypad and display can be used to make calls from the GSM module for testing connections to receiving telephones or communicating with the service provider.

The software includes good search facilities for when there are large numbers of proximity or code users on the system. A range of European languages are supported.

Operation

The unit has a solid feel to it with very positive blue backlit mechanical buttons. It can work in a combination of stand-alone and GSM operation. For remote access there are three flavours of App available through the Android and iOS

stores; these are Videx SMS Access for users of the system, then Videx SMS Wizard for administrators, and finally Videx SMS Wizard Pro for installers and engineers. This engineering app allows unlimited sites with multiple intercoms to be managed. Linking to the Videx subscription based “Cloud” service allows configuration uploads and system monitoring to be performed in real time with Browser access for multiple users.

The system can handle up to 400 access codes (4 to 8 digits) and 1000 proximity tags. 1000 dial to open numbers plus 32 temporary numbers with a duration of 1 to 255 hours individually allocated to each number.

Four phone numbers can be set for each call button, one primary and three diverts.

Ten access control time schedules are available along with ten free-access time bands.

Performance

The unit has a range of engineering features that allow features such as an SMS message to be sent to a specific mobile number to notify a preventive maintenance check is due, or if a Pay as you go SIM is being used, a low-balance warning can be sent, though this is dependent on the service provider’s balance check string being known.

When calling a “Calling please wait” audio message is given before you are connected through to the specified phone number. The audio is clear, and the door or gate can be opened with a simple key press on the receiver’s phone.

Proximity tags are presented to the centre of the unit by the nameplate and the unit can be programmed to announce “The door is open” or “The gate is open” as appropriate and this is in a clear female voice with programmable volume to suit the location. Non-valid tags will produce an audio “Invalid code” message.

Conclusion

A well-engineered flexible and expandable 4G based intercom system that can be managed through a variety of local and remote methods.

How to choose access control

Given the array of access control options available, what are the top tips for installers when it comes to choosing which technology suits an application? The PSI Panel is in session....

Access control is surely the security discipline with the most technology options for installers to choose from. Tags, keys, cards, PINs, biometrics and now mobile credentials are all potential methods of managing access, not forgetting the recent developments with facial recognition analytics on cameras. Integrators have an array of alternatives to consider each time they look at compiling a spec for an entry management system.

So how can installers be sure that they are specifying the most suitable and future proof systems? The experts give us their opinions:

Pip Courcoux –Assa Abloy

When specifying an access control system for a typical business, a major tip for installers would be to consider an offline solution.

In the past almost all access control solutions used conventional networking, whether this be via a bus network or over an IP network. However, in the same way that resilience has gradually been built into all ‘critical utilities’, networks are very much next. In future we would expect to see shared mobile network infrastructure both inside and outside the building through small cell distributed antennae systems.

Since most, if not all people always carry a mobile phone with them, future access control solutions can leverage that shared infrastructure, with auto connectivity on entering a building. The move to using mobile devices is a natural trend; manufacturers and industry leaders don’t need to force this.

The flexibility and resilience mobile credentials offer will only increase as more businesses treat the mobile as an edge network device. This naturally aligns to the shift towards the Cloud and its many benefits (eg, cost savings, reliance, increased cyber security).

Against the traditional server system for storage which takes up floorspace and requires maintenance, the Cloud has not only proved itself to be reliable and cost effective, it also has the capability to minimise privately owned or deployed infrastructure.

The reduction in infrastructure creates, efficiency, cost savings and agility to adopt technology as it evolves but it also drives sustainability.

‘Sustainability’ is quickly gaining traction across business of all sizes and is responsible for driving the sixth wave of innovation. Within Assa Abloy we believe that within the next five years it will become one of the most important points when products are being specified. To prepare for this opportunity many of our newer technologies utilise a Cloud eco system and are operated via mobile credentials.

Everything starts with the needs of the end user and researching which systems best meet those requirements. We want systems to be user friendly and intuitive too as simplicity is key to adding value.

We then look at the infrastructure and environment; for example, is there an existing and accessible IP network in the area that you want to install a system. If it is in a commercial or industrial environment, would it require a vandal-resistant solution? Or is it in an area of architectural importance? Then we are looking at more aesthetic options for readers for example.

In terms of tokens choice, if a high level of traffic through an entrance point is expected, installers and end users may look for something that is quick and reliable, which typically drives the use of smart technology by utilising smart credentials.

Additionally, if we think about the perimeter of premises, for example for vehicle control, people may want to use long-range solutions, ensuring vehicle entry and exit is a lot more seamless.

So can this procedure be simplified? How modular a system is designed can impact the product selection and installation process. Systems that have fewer components can make the design and installation a lot easier, and vice versa.

Looking at the technologies that have a rosy future, I would say that utilising smart devices is a technology that has continued to spark end users and installers’ interests. For over a decade, smart technology has helped connect people wherever they are, whether it is a workplace, or at home. The trend is now driving the access control industry, and people expect to be able to use access control technology through smart devices.

Thinking about the systems that may be facing a tricky few years, it is always easy to think older legacy technologies, for example analogue, is on the decline. In fact, in every marketplace, there are a range of needs and wants, and budget capabilities, so I think for

some considerable time there will still be space in the market for all types of access control technologies.

When choosing or specifying an access control system, the first thing to consider is the day-to-day usage of the system. The way the doors will be used and the quantity of traffic they will see will dictate which system is best suited. Who will be using the doors? Is it office workers or indoor-only users? Or is it an outdoor environment such as a construction site or engineering facility? In an indoor situation, solutions such as fingerprint readers can save time, improve efficiency, and reduce costs longterm. However, on a construction site, facial recognition might work better, as fingerprints can be damaged easily in tradespeople. Alternatively, if biometric technology is not a requirement, then card/tag solutions could be more suitable.

For access control systems, the most important thing to remember is the expectations of the customer. What do they want the system to do for them? What problems should it aim to solve?

If the system is simple, with a low number of doors and users, then cost might be a more important factor. In that case, a standalone access control solution could suffice. For a larger premises with more doors and a larger body of users, an online system is likely more convenient and efficient for day-to-day administration.

The general trends of the industry are still leaning towards biometrics as the future. While fingerprint readers are becoming more and more popular and more and more effective, they are not the only option. Facial recognition will also be very prominent, due to the ease of use and speed with which individuals can be verified and granted access.

Michael Nicholson – 2N

Installers looking to ‘futureproof’ their projects will be asking themselves two questions: How might technology develop? How might the needs of my customer evolve?

I have three pieces of advice for installers asking themselves these two questions:

First, choose a system that offers flexibility. This means IP-based technology. IP devices are easy to upgrade as new functionality emerges, and they can be integrated into complex security and home automation systems alongside thirdparty technology.

IP access control also enables users to choose between different credentials. For example, a single device can support smartphone access, fingerprint scans, RFID cards, PIN codes and/or QR codes. Customers therefore aren’t committed to the decisions they take at the time of installation – they can change their mind if they want to.

Second, prioritise cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is a becoming a major concern for customers, who understand that any device – including IP intercoms – can be vulnerable to cyberattacks. The good news for installers is

that if you choose the right devices and follow the correct procedures, you can significantly reduce the risk.

Third, think hard about whether you want to prioritise mobile access control or biometrics. Smartphone credentials are the fastest-growing form of access control, primarily because they are so convenient – but also because they are secure and no longer expensive.

Biometrics, such as facial recognition technology, can be the right option in some settings. However, there are also some regulatory challenges which need to be considered. For example, in some countries, it has become impossible to use fingerprint access control or facial recognition in workplaces as a result of privacy concerns.

For these reasons, we have prioritised mobile access control but each solution has different strengths. My advice to installers is simply to think it through carefully.

Before selecting an access control system, it is essential to define the objectives and requirements of the installation. What is the purpose of the system? Are there any special considerations such as time and attendance management, visitor management, or integration with other systems?

By answering these questions as early as possible and working with trusted manufacturers with dedicated technical and sales support, installers can narrow down the options. This simplifies identifying the level of security requirements from the start to ensure a bespoke system is created.

The environment where the access control system will be installed is another important factor. Is it indoor or outdoor? Is the location subject to extreme temperatures, humidity, or dust? Is the area prone to vandalism or tampering?

Installers should also take into account the wiring requirements. While some access control systems are wireless and can be installed quickly and easily, in some circumstances wireless may not be the ideal option, due to distances and possible interference.

Evaluating the technology is critical. The access control technology is evolving and advancing rapidly, but it’s important to note the features an end user requires. For example, area occupancy and fire muster allow for easy monitoring of who is present in certain areas of a building in case of an emergency. Time and attendance tracking features help organisations to monitor employee access.

Read-in or read-out options allow for customisation of entry and exit points. Visitor management allows for easy tracking and management of guests on site.

Installers can consider the benefits and limitations of different technologies such as biometrics, proximity/smart cards, and mobile credentials. They should also evaluate the scalability, flexibility, and interoperability of the system to ensure it can adapt to the future needs of an organisation.

For critical infrastructure projects, installers will need to make sure the system is following CPNI regulations, with stringent penalties in place for non-compliance.

In terms of the future of access control technologies, we can expect to see continued growth in integration and cloudbased systems. Integration is becoming increasingly popular as many organisations prefer to keep their security and building management systems under one umbrella. The aim is to simplify operations, increase efficiency and create a more comprehensive and streamlined approach to security.

Cloud-based access control systems are also becoming more commonplace, as they provide remote management and monitoring capabilities, and can be easily scaled up or down as needed.

For installers, choosing the right future-proof access control system requires careful consideration of the application, environment and technology requirements. By staying up-to-date with the latest advancements and working with a manufacturer that can offer dedicated support from a pre and post-installation perspective, we can work in partnership to provide customers with scalable solutions that meet their specific needs.

Removing any doubts

The security industry has come a long way in terms of the safety and innovation of its products, and that has been heavily influenced by the rigorous testing by third-party certification bodies such as the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), part of the BRE Group, BSI and the BSI Kitemark, and Secured by Design with their Secure Connected Device (SCD) certification, an official police security initiative.

You wouldn’t feel comfortable eating at a restaurant if you had even the slightest doubt that the kitchen hygiene setup wasn’t up to scratch. That’s why seeing that 5-star hygiene rating – which is awarded after passing rigorous third-party inspections – provides comfort as it shows you’re in safe hands and your meal will be crafted in a high-quality environment.

Installers and their customers feel the same way about alarm signalling solutions. They want to know that the products used are of the highest standards and have been given the green light by industry bodies, not just the vendors’ propositions team.

The challenges of skipping on safety

There is a plethora of challenges that transpire without proper accreditation. One to take seriously is that some suppliers may have strict requirements for the installers they work with. If they do not have the necessary accreditation, they may be excluded, which can limit their access to customers. There are obvious financial implications for this, as it reduces opportunities for new business.

On the other hand, if installers don’t use products that have third-party certification, they also expose themselves to legal implications. This is because if a product they installed leads to a fire or burglary, and it wasn’t appropriately checked beforehand, they could be held responsible. The consequences could

be catastrophic, but that’s why third-party certifications exist. They are a safety net and a source of reassurance for both installers and customers.

Fine dining in the security market

Fundamentally, reputation is everything in this industry. What certifications offer is a route to establishing trust with customers. For example, a new, up-market restaurant may be rumoured to have the best dish on the menu, but if it fails the latest food hygiene test, it’s unlikely customers will take a seat in the dining room, spend their cash or tell their friends to try it out.

In times of economic uncertainty, it’s important that installers are putting their best foot forward and are creating a loyal customer base. Importantly, certifications give installers the leverage to boost their bottom line through marketing. By choosing to sell products that are highly commended in the industry, they are setting themselves up for success. A simple recognisable logo used on products can give an edge over competitors who may not have the same level of certification, making them more attractive to potential customers. Some customers specifically look for certified installers too, which means this can translate into more business and higher profits.

Ultimately, certifications signify the best in the business. Products are subject to continuous and rigorous checks by independent auditors and this level of repeated scrutiny leaves little room for error in how effective the products are. From a thorough application process to numerous factory visits, if at any point of the process issues are flagged, it can

lead to suspensions, or at worst, withdrawals of the certificate.

As a result, installers are more likely to have higher quality installations that meet or exceed these standards. This can lead to fewer callbacks, reduced liability and higher customer satisfaction.

Why certifications will continue to help installers

Looking ahead, certifications will need to evolve with technological advancements to accommodate the changing needs of new products. For example, with the acceleration of IoT and smart devices, the door to new risks will be opened. From cybersecurity concerns to a range of technical limitations of new products, they will demand stringent and constantly adapting standards.

As we enter a new era of alarm signalling products, installers should keep their eye out for the latest changes in alarm certification standards, so they are offering their customers the best, and safest products available.

Focusing education on the right people at the right time across the supply chain is crucial. It’s clear that most installers understand the importance of testing. The challenge is ensuring everyone, from product designers to marketing managers, recognises why they need to be front of mind.

In a market that is becoming increasingly competitive, and a world where fires and burglaries remain a persistent risk, it’s vital that the alarm signalling industry removes doubt from the recipe with high-quality, third-party certifications.

Working in the CCTV industry can provide a sense of purpose as you help improve public safety and security, preventing crime and protecting people and property.

The CCTV industry is constantly evolving, which means that you may have the opportunity to work with the latest cutting-edge technology, such as facial recognition software, thermal imaging, and video analytics.

Is third party certification beneficial?

Third party certification is very important to us and often a prerequisite from many of our clients, we are very proud with the all the hard work and team effort needed to hold NACOSS Gold accreditation.

Do you think there is an engineer skills shor tage? Any trouble recruiting?

The rapid advancements in technology and the increasing demand for more sophisticated surveillance systems require specialised expertise and technical skills. However, there are not enough qualified or experienced engineers available to meet this demand, which can lead to longer project completion times and higher costs for some companies.

Ongoing investment in training programs is very important to us, helping to keep our engineers up to date with the very latest technology.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

Appreciate the good things in your life, no matter how small they may be. Practicing gratitude can help you stay positive and optimistic, even during difficult times.

Will England ever win the World Cup again? Not in my lifetime.

Review: A very compact camera whose appearance does not stand out, making it ideal for locations where overt security is not desired. Score: 8.5/10

Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°.

Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this. Score: 8/10

AVA – DOME W-4K-30

The AVA dome is an NDAA compliant vandal resistant (IK10) day /night IP66 dome for indoor or outdoor use with 4K imaging, built-in microphones and edge analytics. The dome uses Cloud connectivity to provide simple set-up and management.

Review: A well-engineered dome with impressive analytics capabilities and straightforward secure connectivity. Ideal for diverse or centralised systems with flexible notifications that can be received and managed from anywhere with available internet access. Score: 8.5/10

Review: An extremely sensitive 8MP high-resolution camera with advanced detection capabilities, 24-hour colour capability and a wide range of security features. Score: 9/10

Serage – SRDNC5FW Dome

The Serage SRDNC5FW from G-TEC is an IP66 ‘Turret’ style 5MP dome with a fixed 2.8mm lens. It is based around a 1/2.7” high sensitivity sensor coupled with an F1.0 lens to give good colour images in low light. Visible and infrared illumination is built in, and a microphone provides audio. AI based video and audio detection is included.

A very good all-round performance from this compact dome camera. Excellent colour image quality in very low light levels and flexible detection and analytic capabilities. Score: 8.5/10

Oncam – C-12 Indoor

This internal 360° view camera designed for ceiling or wall mounting, is based on a 12MP sensor and provides a fisheye image with a wide range of configuration options.

Review: A very powerful compact fisheye view camera compatible with a wide range of video management systems with simplicity of installation and good support documentation. Score: 8.5/10

Dahua – TiOC 2.0

The DH-IPC-HDW3549H-AS-PV-S3 is a 5MP full-colour fixed-focal eyeball WizSense network camera. It is the latest in the company’s TiOC (three- in-one camera) line which integrates 24/7 full-colour monitoring, active deterrence and AI into one solution.

Review: A very capable Eyeball style dome that has a wide range of features to help detect and deter intruders, with extensive cyber security settings. When used with the Dahua Smart NVR, the camera supports intelligent search capabilities. Score: 8.5/10

Wisenet – PNM-C7083RVD

The PNM-C7083RVD multi-directional camera is a dual dome device that provides two 2MP views that can be individually set to suit locations while requiring only one network lead. The cameras provide AI object classification analytics and low light operation. They are IP66 & NEMA4X environmentally rated with an IK10 impact protection rating.

Review: An impressive and very flexible dual camera unit that is easy to install, configure and maintain. Score: 9/10

Hikvision – AX Pro

The AX Pro can be purchased as a kit or individual components. The reviewed system was a DS-PWA96-Kit1-WE kit with the seven parts as listed. It is a wireless Grade 2 alarm system that can be used stand-alone or integrated into a management system. Additional modules are available to link to home automation products and systems. The DS-PWA96-M-WE panel supports up to 32 areas and 96 zones.

Review: A compact wireless alarm system with extended battery duration and flexible remote management. The product is well suited to central monitoring with a range of protocols supported. A reasonably wide and increasing range of detector types with scope for integration with home-automation systems. Score: 8.5/10

Pyronix – Home Control DoorbellCam kit

A smart HD video doorbell and wireless chime kit that allows users to receive real-time alerts from the front door and stay connected to home; never missing a visitor or delivery again. The DoorbellCam has an inbuilt mic and speaker for two-way contact.

Review: This easy to set up and straightforward to use video doorbell kit would be a great addition to any smart home system or simply to provide more functionality at an entrance way. Score: 8/10

Ajax – MotionCam Outdoor

The Ajax MotionCam Outdoor is an IP 55 rated combined external PIR sensor with inbuilt capture camera for use with the latest Ajax Hubs that support visual verification. The detector has settings for the image resolution and number of pictures sent on alarm. After dark the unit has two high-intensity infrared LEDs to provide illumination for the camera’s monochrome mode.

Review: A very simple to install and manage, extended battery life external PIR detector for Ajax based Hub 2 systems, with the advantage of visual verification. Score: 9/10

Eaton – i-on10 KP

The i-on Compact Security System is a Grade 2 wired intrusion detection panel with 10 zones and up to 10 users and 4 keypads. It is promoted as being suitable for simple, entry-level burglar alarm systems to protect homes and small commercial installations.

Review: A straightforward and engineer friendly grade 2 wired alarm system with a wide range of configuration options and simplicity of installation. Good documentation is supplied with the product. Score: 9/10

CSL – MiniAir 2

MiniAir 2 is a single-path signalling solution that utilises a 4G/LTE-M path to signal an alarm from a protected premises to an ARC. It comes with a standby SIM as a backup to safeguard the system, if the active SIM fails.

Review: The product overall is great. It is a perfect solution to the PSTN switch over/off as it means that existing systems that rely solely on PSTN signalling can continue to do so without the expense of upgrading the customers control equipment. Score: 9/10

Capture motion detectors are intended for use in a wide variety of professional security applications. With a choice of EN Grade 2 wired or wireless connectivity, wall or ceiling mounting, and a choice of detection technologies including dual element, quad element or dual technology sensing, Capture suits a wide variety of security environments.

Review: The ease of connection with a range of switchable, built-in EOL resistor values simplifies the installation process. The potential for device branding will likely be appealing to independent installers. Score: 9/10

TRENDnet – TI-BEP200

The 2-Port Industrial Outdoor Gigabit Active/Passive PoE+ Extender, model TI-BEP200 from TRENDnet enables installers to extend up to two PoE+ signals an additional 100m for a total PoE distance of 200m or up to 500m with daisy chained units.

Review: The unit is suitable for industrial application where external installation is required as it is constructed of heavy-duty material, enamel coated and IP67 rated with built in 4kV surge protector and surface earthing clamp. Score: 7.5/10

Videoloft – Cloud Adapter 8

The Videoloft Cloud Adapter 8 is an eight channel bridging device which equips new and legacy video surveillance systems with Videoloft’s offsite cloud video solution.

Review: It is a very cost effective solution for those looking to update existing systems, upgrade the overall storage solution, or wanting to connect independent cameras to a recording and viewing platform without the need for a recorder or controller. Score: 8.5/10

Wisenet – TID-600R

The Wisenet TID-600R is a compact IP65, IK08 intercom unit featuring a 1/2.8” 2MP camera with a very wide viewing angle and infrared support up to 5 metres. It supports SIP 2.0 connection, has a touchless call option, edge storage and ONVIF compliance. It measures 165(h) x 49(w) x 48(d) cm with a weight of 490g.

Review: This is an impressive SIP 2.0 intercom unit that can be used in a wide range of situations especially in healthcare, where the touch-free method to initiate a call reduces infection risks. The HD camera and its event recording options can provide excellent evidential images. Score: 9/10

2N – IP Style

This video intercom features a 10”touch display boosted by the Axis ARTPEC-7 processor, full-HD camera and WaveKey technology. The unit is rated IP65 and IK08, meaning that users can touch the display even if there is any water on its surface.

Review: The unit is easily customisable depending on the project, with ability to customise each resident if used in a domestic setting, and importing business logos and grouping for businesses in a commercial setting – a very elegant solution and great addition to the outside of any building. Score: 8.5/10

PSTN – time is ticking for the UK

The switch-off will have a huge impact on UK businesses, preventing any further usage of analogue phone lines and older broadband connections, as well as services such as lift lines, EPOS systems, and CCTV cameras, which may come as a surprise to business owners unaware these services use PSTN lines.

M247 surveyed 500 UK-based IT decision makers and found that awareness of the switchoff is high – 77% of respondents are aware it is happening by 2025. However, a stop-sell is scheduled for September this year, which means businesses will be unable to place any new orders for PSTN services, or make significant changes to existing services. Despite awareness for the PSTN stop-sell being equally high (76%) – the vast majority have yet to take any action. Just over a quarter (29%) of businesses list the PSTN switch-off as a top priority – trailing behind issues such as growing cybersecurity threats (50%) and investment in cloud migration (47%).

The PSTN network is due to be fully deactivated by the end of 2025. That’s just about two and a half years away, so is the UK ready for the big switch-off?

According to a new survey, an overwhelming majority (88%) of UK businesses are still reliant on the public switched telephone network (PSTN) for essential services, such as analogue phone lines, broadband, alarm systems and CCTV cameras.

This is despite the imminent PSTN stop-sell (September 2023), which will see the sale of all new PSTN-related products halted immediately, followed by a full deactivation of the network by 31 December 2025.

The findings are from a new survey commissioned by M247, which explores the current state of PSTN usage among UK businesses.

Of the businesses using the PSTN, a third (33%) have over 100 devices connected, with over half (51%) saying they would experience significant disruption if the network was switched off before they had migrated. 80% of respondents believe migration from PSTN services would take up to six months to complete and 23% believe the disruption caused by the switch-off would lead to a loss of business. This makes the fact that so many businesses are yet to make the switch ever more alarming.

Liz Hawke, Product Manager UC&C at M247, said: “The UK’s PSTN switch-off will mark a historic change for business communications and a major leap forward in the country’s adoption of digital technologies. However, despite widespread awareness of the fastapproaching switch-off, and the final stopsell which is a matter of months away, an overwhelming majority of UK businesses have failed to take action when it comes to migrating away from the network.”

She adds: “Time is ticking for UK businesses and the bottom line is simple. Migrating away from PSTN is an important step in the digital transformation process for businesses, and those that don’t act soon risk being left behind.”

The online research was conducted by Sapio Research in March 2023 using an email invitation and an online survey. The survey was conducted among 500 UK-based IT decision-makers and managers across all sectors responsible for, or heavily involved in, business IT connectivity and telephony.

David Crawford

North has announced the appointment of David Crawford as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Jack Foss

Mayflex has appointed Jack Foss as Account Manager for Converged Technology with an emphasis on IP security. Jack joins Mayflex from Eagle Eye Networks where he was the southern area sales manager.

David joins from Cellnex Telecom, the telecoms infrastructure company. In his role as UK Managing Director, he was responsible for integrating the business into the group operating model, developing key customer relationships and driving local organic and inorganic growth. Prior to this, he held various executive roles leading business units as well as transformation and integration programmes in the telecoms and outsourcing sectors at Capita and Cable & Wireless. Earlier in his career, David worked for the strategy consultancy Bain & Co.

Mark Mansfield & Sheila Sloan First Response Group (FRG) has strengthened its senior leadership team with the appointment of two new positions; Mark Mansfield joins the company as chief operating officer (COO) and Sheila Sloan as director of human resources.

Mark Mansfield brings to FRG his vast knowledge of operational strategy and leadership whilst, with more than 20 years’ experience in B2B manufacturing and security, Sheila Sloan joins FRG from Stanley Black and Decker.

Evolution has appointed Jason Misters as its new Group Health and Safety and Compliance Manager. Jason will be responsible for driving the health and safety culture and ensuring that the strategy is implemented consistently across the organisation.

Vimpex has welcomed Terry Mallarky who joins the team as Regional Key Account Manager.

Terry, who brings over 30 years of experience with life safety products and customers, will be actively managing and developing OEM customers to achieve profitable growth and maintain relationships with key product, commercial and business managers.

Jason previously worked for the Ministry of Defence as a Senior Project Officer responsible for leading military diving training, liaising with key stakeholders across multiple disciplines.

Commenting on his appointment, Jason said: “I am pleased to be joining the Evolution team as I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experiences across the organisation to establish robust and coherent health and safety management systems”.
