n the publishing world it is quite common for magazines to have special editions focusing on specific topics or individuals. For example Sports Illustrated runs an annual Swimsuit Edition, Hockey News has just had a Diversity Edition and Classic Rock recently did a special publication dedicated to Kiss (good, but pricey). When the news came from the Government in late February in regards to the roadmap for the country to come out of the latest (and hopefully final) lockdown, I realised that this edition of PSI is actually, quite by accident, something of a feel good edition - make that the Positivity Edition 2021. After all it was this time last year that the rumblings of the first lockdown were gathering pace. We thought it would never happen back then, but look what has happened since... Why is this edition so positive? Well take a look at the subjects we’ve covered. First off there’s plenty of positive news on pages 6-9 with new partnerships and deals being agreed. Then we have an interview with Danielle Jones and Sophie Hallam of Secure & Recruit who are both so upbeat about the security and fire sector job market that they have done some recruitment for their own business too. There are opportunities out there if you are of a mind to go looking for a new role. Then later in the magazine we have a chat with Mark Taylor of ECHO about the initiative to speed up and improve the contact between ARCs and the emergency services to provide a quicker response and fewer unwanted alarms. There is also a discussion in Panel about the benefits of the big UK switch from the old PSTN lines to all-IP connectivity beginning in earnest this year. Out with the old, in with the much better. Is all this enough for you? There’s more. Due to the proposed lifting of the lockdown in mid-June (and not forgetting that some people want it brought forward to May) this means that trade events might well be on the cards for 2021 after all. The first of which could be, and here’s where you find out if you are a glass half-full kind of person, the PSI Premier Awards Dinner and Golf Day on 1st July. Given that those who remember hair metal, Space Dust and Tiswas will have all been offered their vaccinations by the end of April the signs are optimistically positive for our big day to go ahead. And in the spirit of this being the Positivity Edition you can find out more about those two events in this issue as well. I realise that by the time this edition comes out much could have changed, but for now it looks like we can be positive about the year ahead even if trade shows coming back means we’ll have to start ironing shirts again. Banham has acquired the British lock manufacturer, Guardian. The two companies have worked together for over 20 years, collaborating on the production of several of their locks. Their long-standing relationship has been built on sharing several key company values including championing British lock manufacturing. This acquisition formally consolidates this successful working partnership and marks the start of a new phase for both companies.
Black Box Fire & Security and Electronic Security Installations (ESI) join forces Lancashire-based Black Box Fire & Security and Derbyshire-based Electronic Security Installations have announced that they have joined forces to form The Black Box Group. The new group will allow both companies to operate across a wider geographical area while retaining their own brands. The Black Box Group will employ over 70 people supporting existing and future clients and will continue to expand the team in the coming months to further support its organic and acquisition driven growth plans. Managing Director of Black Box Fire & Security, David Barnes, will take on the role of Group Managing Director. David said: “We are delighted to join forces with ESI in a move which will be beneficial for all stakeholders.
Guardian will continue to be run as an independent company, as part of the Banham Group, with Director David Bate at the helm. David said: “This is a very proud moment in Guardian’s history in joining the Banham Group. We have worked very closely with Banham for many years, almost since our own beginning, and we have always had a long and trusted relationship with them. Having built up Guardian over the last 40 years in Willenhall, we are very proud of everything that we have achieved and the benchmark we have set for British lock manufacturing. This partnership with Banham marks the start of a new phase in our company’s established history and we look forward to the wealth of opportunities that lie ahead.’ Charles Hallatt, Executive Chairman at Banham said: “Banham are delighted to officially welcome Guardian to the Banham Group family. We have worked with David and his team for many years and have a wonderful collaborative working relationship that has been integral to Banham’s success. Our shared values in both British craftsmanship and championing UK manufacturing in our industry have been instrumental to producing some of our most iconic locks. This is an exciting development for Banham and we look forward to working closer with Guardian to combine our expertise.” They were our preferred partner sharing the same values and quality standards that Black Box employees, customers and partners have grown to expect. With our three locations in Lancashire, Durham and now Derbyshire the Group will be even better positioned to deliver excellent services to our increasing UK wide customer base. We look forward to further expanding our geographical footprint in the coming months.” Nick Webb, Sales Director of ESI said: “In order to support the growth that ESI has experienced in recent years, we needed a resilient partner which shares our future ambitions and will support us in shaping them. Black Box Fire & Security’s dedication to customer service, healthy corporate values and professionalism were critical in our decision. We are looking forward to working together on the next part of the journey.”

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L
NSI partners with Cyber Essentials certification body Risk Crew
The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) has announced a partnership with Risk Crew, an IASMEaccredited Cyber Essentials Certification Body, to deliver cyber security certification and associated benefits to NSI approved companies. The aim of the new partnership is to provide NSI approved companies with a straightforward pathway to Cyber Essentials certification, building increased reassurance for the wider communities they serve. Cyber Essentials/Plus certification is a Government-backed, industry supported scheme to help organisations of all sizes protect themselves against a range of common online attacks. Certification is mandatory for Ministry of Defence contracts, many UK Central Civil Government contracts involving the handling of personal information and purveying of certain ICT products and services, and is becoming increasingly desirable for private sector contracts. It will also be a requirement for ARCs signing up to the ECHO-connected service for police response alarm signalling currently undergoing testing, and due to be launched in 2021. In addition to providing a clear statement of the basic controls organisations should implement to reduce the risks from common online threats, Cyber Essentials certification is an independent awarded approval for organisations to demonstrate to their customers, internal stakeholders, investors, insurers and others they have taken essential cyber security precautions to protect their business and any customer data they hold. NSI has been working with Risk Crew, a risk and compliance management consultancy and Cyber Essentials/Plus Certification Body for its own Cyber Essentials Plus certification and penetration testing since 2017. Richard Jenkins, NSI Chief Executive, said “In today’s increasingly interconnected world all businesses, whether large or small, need a secure level of protection against cyber attack. Cyber Essentials/Plus certification reassures companies, and in turn their customers, that business processes and procedures have some level of protection. This new partnership signposts NSI approved companies to Risk Crew as a recognised approvals body in cyber security.” Risk Crew Chief Executive, Richard Hollis added, “The certification framework provides an essential baseline for protecting business systems and sensitive information assets. The principles and criterion are based upon fundamental cyber security best practices that have been proven to reduce the threat of a breach.”
The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Vickie Davies, Operations Manager at CSL. This year, Vickie is celebrating 20 years with the company. Firstly, I’d like to say a huge congratulations and a thank you for 20 years of service to CSL. How has your role changed over the past two decades? Thank you, Simon. I cannot believe it has been 20 years! We have come a long way since January 2001 when I joined the business as a Warehouse Operative. After getting to know the company, throwing myself into the role, and asking lots of questions, I was given the opportunity to become Logistics Manager. Then, in 2017 I achieved my dream job of Operations Manager. I can remember when we celebrated our first month of dispatching 1,000 orders. Now we do more than this every week! We have come a remarkably long way from our humble beginnings, but I still recognise the company for the same ‘customer first’ focus and teamwork I witnessed on day one. How have you managed your department to meet the demands of the growing business? We have expanded the team over the years, with 12 team members now based at our Logistics Centre in South Wales. The team boasts 5 staff who have been with CSL for over 10 years and this experience is complimented by newer team members who have helped us to keep moving forward. As well as this, our focus has been on constantly evaluating and improving our processes. We have a commitment to our customers that my team and I are determined to fulfil every single day. This keeps us focused on working hard but also working efficiently to maximise output and minimise errors. On a personal level, the business has supported me to complete my NVQ Level 4 in Management. This has enabled me to ensure I have the right tools I need to make sure my team are happy and working to the best of their abilities. As with all areas of CSL, we also see our customers as partners and we work closely with ARCs and Installers to ensure we collectively deliver for the end-users. I’d like to thank all my industry colleagues for their support as well. Looking back, what have been the biggest challenges? 2020 proved to be one of the most testing years for us and obviously we are not out of the woods yet. Our industry has not slowed down – which is fantastic for us all. However, this has posed new challenges to ensure our team members have a safe working environment to enable them to do their jobs and still meet those high standards. As with every challenge thrown our way – including weather in the Welsh winters – the team has risen to the occasion and continue to do so. I couldn’t be prouder of what we have achieved together. What’s kept you interested for all these years? At CSL and in the sectors we serve, no two days are the same. The challenges come thick and fast and I love helping the business to overcome these. I’ve also been so lucky to work for a business I truly believe in and with people whom I respect. We are always looking forward and I am excited to see where the next few years take us. Vickie has been voted our Employee of the Year for several of her twenty years with CSL. Everyone would like to congratulate Vickie on her amazing achievement!
YOU SAID IT! "The kit is amazing, the support is great and everyone we’ve dealt with at CSL, from the top to the bottom, has been spot on, and we never expect anything in return. You’re all stars 🙌" Rob Rathbone (KHG Security) – Instagram – 13th Jan Tweet us @CSLGroupLtd

Western Digital Purple 18TB HDD
at 7200rpm. Although not stated on the specification sheet the drive appears to be built around 9 platters handling 2TB of data each. The drive utilises a number of specific developments to achieve the very high storage capacity available, this includes a high accuracy positioning system that allows the record heads to write tracks with no separation between them. Their process is called Shingling and allows for an element of overwrite as each track is written to the platter. The read/write head assembly includes piezo micro actuators to allow precise tracking and finer track widths, this is in the form of a multi-stage actuator suspension, allowing greater accuracy of head positioning with minimal arm assembly movement. This allows the higher track density to be used and assists with robustness in more extreme environments such as multi-drive bays where vibration is likely to be increased. The drive itself is hermetically sealed and helium filled. This HelioSeal technology which is in its 6th generation since being introduced in 2013, reduces internal drag and turbulence when compared to air filled drives. A further result is improved temperature control and the capability to use thinner disk platters. The drive is given a 360TB / year annualised workload rating and a 3-year warranty. The SATA data and power connectors can accept latching connectors for secure terminations. An adjacent two pin connector on the drive is unidentified. The drive is designed for use in single or multiple configurations with no limit to the number of drives in a bay.

he Western Digital Purple range of hard drives is designed specifically for surveillance applications with a variety of capacities from 1TB up to this 18TB model. They are designed for 24-hour, all-year-round operation with an emphasis on continuous write-cycle time. The drive is said to support up to 64 HD cameras and is optimised for AI based read / write requirements with an additional 32 AI streams.
Hardware This is a conventional 3.5” form factor hard drive with SATA 3.0, 6Gb/s connectivity. Its dimensions are approximately 147 x 102 x 26mm and with a weight of 0.69kg. The 18TB drive has a 512MB cache and rotates
Configuration The drive is supplied unformatted so must be suitably initialised and partitioned before use unless being used in a compatible recording system with firmware that supports and controls such large storage. Within Microsoft Windows, this drive must be initialised as GPT (Guid Partition Table) to overcome the 2TB limit on legacy operating systems. With a simple volume set the drive reports a maximum useable diskspace of 16.3TB. Reporting Technology) data, plus Quick and Extended tests. The quick test takes around two minutes, but the extended test would likely take around 24 hours for this size of drive. A short report window gives a Pass /Fail result and allows sectors with errors to be excluded. In addition to the SMART attributes data report, there is an Erase option that offers a Quick Erase of the first and last million sectors or a Full Erase of the whole drive (this would take many hours). WD device analytics allows manufacturers to monitor the drive’s performance in real time and to take action if any abnormal conditions arise. Western Digital do not provide a data recovery service themselves but do refer customers to a limited number of specialist third-party data recovery centres such as various Ontrack locations for the UK and Europe.

The drive’s specification sheet gives a transfer rate of 272MB/s. In tests the drive did achieve a maximum read rate of 272.25MB/s for the outer tracks and an average of around 216MB/s. Even for the innermost tracks the minimum read rate was an impressive 122MB/s. Writing a 2.4GB file to the drive took just over 13 seconds with a rate of approximately 183MB/s. The drive is rated for up to 64 HD (1080p) camera streams though this appears to be based on a data rate of 3.2Mb/s per camera using H.265 at 25 ips. The initial specification details aren’t sufficient to fully calculate the maximum camera loading for the significantly higher resolution cameras that are now regularly in use, but this can likely be reasonably worked out from camera stream data and compression performance. The figures would suggest a large amount of headroom is available but limited information is provided in their specification sheet and website
pages. The additional 32 AI streams are included on the 8TB to 18TB versions of the Purple drives and Western Digital’s “AllFrame AI” technology is used to improve streaming through firmware management of the 512MB cache to efficiently manage the camera streams to control and minimise head movement on both write and read operations by using contiguous rather than random write storage. This ensures write priority, improves ATA streaming and significantly reduces frame dropping. The Helium filled chassis along with other power reduction techniques means that the maximum read / write power demand is just 6.3 Watts with an idle demand of 5.9 Watts and a standby and sleep mode draw of just 0.9 Watts. The drive when operating in free space for over two hours had a casing temperature of between 35.9°C and 38.1°C depending on location with software showing an internal temperature of 40°C with an ambient of 25°C. An operating range of 0 to 65°C is given. A full erase of the drive was undertaken using independent software and this resulted in an overall duration of 23 hours and 49 minutes. An average write speed of 199MB/s was recorded. This test was a simple “Zero fill” erase so an HMG Infosec or DoD5220.22M verified overwrite would take significantly longer.
Conclusion A very high-capacity drive with fast read & write access and multiple features to improve the storage and robustness of multi-camera surveillance recordings, especially where complex analytics and Deep Learning are utilised.

Hisense in UK market partnership with Fortus Hisense has announced a distribution partnership with Fortus to launch its commercial display solutions in the UK and Ireland
A
line-up of commercial display solutions will be available in the UK from Q2 after Hisense entered into a strategic partnership with Fortus to launch the brand across multiple channels in the UK and Ireland. The Hisense commercial display brand offers a unique opportunity for Fortus to expand its reach into the surveillance, security and pro AV markets. Mark Massie, Commercial Director at Fortus UK explains: “We know that sales of security and surveillance products are growing rapidly into the AV channel. Having a display brand like Hisense in our portfolio has the potential to expand our sales and customer base significantly.” Philip Davis, UK Sales Manager for Hisense commented: “It’s great to share the ambitions of our Hisense distributor and working with Fortus in the UK and Ireland is exactly that. The company has grown significantly in the last ten years during its successful partnerships with global brands such as Hikvision and Honeywell. Their recent expansion and appetite to enter the pro AV market make them an excellent entry point for Hisense in the UK.” Hisense products are scheduled to arrive in the UK and be shipping from Fortus by Q2 2021. All Hisense solutions sold in the UK are supported by a minimum three-year onsite deinstallation warranty. Big in sport – Hisense boasts European football club sponsorships including Leeds Utd and Paris St Germain. To find out more about the deal we spoke exclusively to Phil Davis and Mark Massie: Why should security installers look at integrating more AV solutions? PD: In recent years’ a large percentage of AV integrators have started installing security and surveillance solutions as part of their offering. This convergence with AV can also be witnessed in the CCTV market since the COVID pandemic started last year. The demand for digital signage to be integrated with surveillance systems is greater than ever. Most shops and public spaces now feature digital signage to give consumers live feedback on anything from body temperature to the number of people in a store. Having the ability
www.psimagazine.co.uk
“The demand for digital signage to be integrated with surveillance systems is greater than ever” to install and integrate professional AV solutions like digital signage and video distribution can only benefit our security industry. MM: Utilising commercial display solutions gives the security integrator more opportunities with their end user customers, where in the past the end customer would have a security installer and a commercial AV installer. There is more and more evidence that customers would like this service to be performed by the same company. Often new sites require both digital signage and electronic security and by offering both solutions this potentially doubles the opportunity for those who offer both technologies. Are there any specific products/lines you think will be popular with installers? PD: The Hisense range is consolidated into digital signage solutions and interactive displays. The digital signage solutions should be popular on a variety installations, especially the larger 75’’ and 86’’ models. The interactive displays are perfect for both the education and corporate channels, delivering a versatile solution for collaboration, information sharing and video conferencing. We’re confident our interactive displays will make any meeting a pleasure to host or participate in. MM: The interest in opportunity for Hisense for the security integrator is a relatively simple transition as they are used to installing products that need a high-quality visual output. Therefore the interactive screens would be a perfect marriage between the two sectors.
Fortus UK is actively working on future support models to grow the sector and the Hisense brand. This will include dedicated account managers, a fully trained technical team and end-toend support. fortusuk.com

INTERVIEW
Recruitment and growth in 2021 This month we speak to Danielle Jones and Sophie Hallam of the recruitment agency Secure & Recruit about successfully matching employers and engineers in the security and fire sectors Danielle Jones
Sophie Hallam
anielle Jones and Sophie Hallam are the Managing Directors of Secure and Recruit a recruitment agency specialising in fire and security positions. They recruit engineers, directors, trainees and junior engineers and everyone in between working with large national companies who may do work in Europe down to local small businesses. Their aim is to add value and be a crucial part of their clients' organisational performance through building relationships and having a strong eye for talent through both initiative and industry knowledge. PSI spoke to Danielle and Sophie just as they were announcing new appointments of their own with the company bringing in two consultants to help develop market growth.

anymore in order to restructure their businesses. We've also seen people stand by their employees as well, which is really nice to see and they've managed to set themselves aside from the rest as a result. Due to the first look down there was a large backlog of work because of shutdowns and sites not being operational and so due to that backlog we saw a massive surge in recruitment and businesses came back online and work needed to be done somehow. At one point we saw a company recruiting over 30 engineers! Following on from that, companies will continue to grow and are winning new business and they know that with the right team on board their growth potential is limitless.
2020 was a strange year for everyone. What were the recruitment trends and how is it looking now? DJ: I would say the sector has levelled out now from the back end of 2020 into 2021, but it was definitely a strange year! We saw recruitment pretty much grind to a halt with the first lockdown and it's very hard and everyone seemed to stop recruiting due to the "unknown" factor. We saw some companies taking advantage of the situation to get rid of engineers that weren't necessarily needed
Are there any types of security personnel in short supply at the moment? DJ: The areas where there has been most of a recruitment slowdown have been retail, pubs, hotels and restaurants because they're closed, but when it comes to commercial properties where people are working in offices or supermarkets that's where the drive for recruitment has continued.

fire and security engineers, these are sought after throughout the UK and everyone in the industry knows this. Recently people have taken more of a proactive stance with this and set up training models and more qualifications to try and return that investment to the industry, because we could end up being our own worst enemy if we don't sort something out to deal with the situation. It feels like there has always been a shortage of installers and maybe security is just not seen as appealing as other technology based careers DJ: We have noticed a lot more trainee positions become available since we started our business three years ago. There weren't really any trainee positions available then but now employers are increasingly recognising the benefits of taking on trainees. Companies have noticed that if they do take on a trainee engineer they can really bring them up to what they expect from them.
“Companies do realise these days that as much as they need installers with qualifications and experience, engineers need to have the right attitude and show that they are happy to put in the commitment”
24
Is there any difference across the country when it comes to recruitment? SH: London is definitely a sought-after area, there has always been a need for engineers and there are a lot of opportunities for subcontractors there so finding permanent engineers is really something that needs pinning down in the area. Recently we have noticed a slowdown of availability in Yorkshire, where we are still successful but we have seen a delay of a couple of days in generating interest with installers, whereas in the past we would have a selection of engineers ready. There are a lot of companies looking in that area at the moment so it seems that the shortage has affected more than a couple of companies.
Have you got any tips for anyone who may be looking to move? DJ: First off your top priority is to do your due diligence on the company and ask them about the stability and security of the job. As we are in such uncertain times it is really important to make sure that whatever happens the job is there for you and is not going to be a worry straight away there. So asking questions is really important. Sometimes engineers may be tempted to jump the gun without asking enough questions, thinking that the new role is going to be okay, which can be risky. SH: Another tip is to make sure you stand out from the crowd. Be proactive in your job search and be enthusiastic, an employer wants to know that you're interested and you're committed to their company and if you're putting that enthusiasm across then you will stand out and you'll have a better chance against other applicants. I think companies do realise these days that as much as they need installers with qualifications and experience, engineers need to have the right attitude and show that they are happy to put in the commitment. DJ: I think it's essential to make sure that the right recruitment agency is representing you so that you know they've got your best interests at heart. It's very important that the agency is looking for exactly what you're looking for otherwise things can be missed and you could take a job thinking that you've got what you needed, but in fact you haven't, by when it's too late. SH: Also, make sure you are moving for the right reasons as well; don’t just move for the money

and don't be taking a side step. Make sure that your current situation is going to be improved upon with the change so that you are moving upwards, not sideways. There are various requirements you will have for the new position, so make sure you are hitting those points. If you want more money speak to one of your directors or managers about it, rather than just moving as a first course of action. So really make sure the new position suits all of your requirements? DJ: Yes, and it can be really simple. For example, sometimes people can move jobs because they're not local to home anymore, or they might be starting a family and their current role takes them away a lot, so they've got to make sure that any new position will not also keep them away from home otherwise they will find themselves looking to move again in six months. Making sure you don't put priorities to one side when looking for a new position. On the other side of things, if you are an employer what is the advice? SH: When you partner with the right agency, someone who knows your business, the rewards are tenfold. You'll be provided with a selection of suitable and qualified candidates so you are in a better place to select the right person with such a variation of options. DJ: Your time to hire is also massively reduced. Obviously companies are extremely busy so to have to add recruitment on top of that is a very big task. Therefore if you are working with a recruitment partner who knows your business very well, the time to hire will definitely reduce because they are finding the right people, prescreening the candidates running through all of the details to make sure the move is the correct fit for both parties. This is vital for not just for the employer, but for the candidate as well, keeping everybody's best interests at heart and working in a timely manner for them. SH: Don't forget that recruitment is our day-today job; this is what we work on every single day so we already have access to a vast range of feasible candidates with variations in skill sets and experience. People are naturally coming to us to find them a new position and although we might not have something immediately available for them, further down the line in three or six months then the perfect job could come up for them so for employers they know that we have people ready for the right roles as they come up.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
What do you think will happen to the recruitment market in 2021 for installers? SH: The industry is very resilient and it is pretty much recession-proof for those companies that stand apart and make an effort to serve their clients properly. Making sure you have the right people in place to represent the business well is vital and engineers are the visible face of the company and if you have the right business model your business will succeed. We will get through this pandemic and its aftermath and recruitment will continue to be a requirement. We're in a steady stance now and a lot of companies are busy and we don't foresee that changing, in fact it will get busier when we come out of the lockdown.
“I think the market will continue to be very busy and following the lifting of lockdown restrictions I think there will be a huge surge in activity on the back of retailers and hospitality reopening” DJ: It's really a case of taking away that unknown for people isn't it? New buildings are always going up, be they houses, commercial or industrial so there is always going to be that need for installers and obviously the service comes along with it as the new systems need to be maintained. I think the market will continue to be very busy and following the lifting of lockdown restrictions I think there will be a huge surge in activity on the back of retailers and hospitality reopening. Ready for the big switchover?
With the switch off of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) due to take place by 2025, beginning for some in 2021, what should installers be doing right now to get ready for the change? What will the switch over mean for the security industry? aybe the pandemic moved us to using newer forms of communication quicker than we would have done, but we are definitely more comfortable using Skype, Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp and other platforms than we were this time last year. This shift to newer IP based comms has made us more expectant of clear audio and, in some cases, video so the plan to move away from the old PSTN lines suits the post pandemic society and the expectations of the new generation of technology users whose smartphone use is second nature. According to the BT consumer website: “While moving to an all IP network promises exciting new communications services, some existing special services equipment connected to the old PSTN network may no longer work, including security alarms, fire alarms and personal (telecare pendant) alarms. We’ve been talking to key industry bodies, manufacturers and service providers for over two years now. We’ve emphasised the need to make sure that
M

their customers know their security, fire, and personal alarms needs to be compatible when they switch to a Digital Voice service.” So where are we today and what should you, as the installer of security systems be doing right now to prepare for the switchover which, if all goes to plan will see many parts of the UK migrate this year? We asked those in the know for their advice:
“The switch-off is happening because while it’s served the country well, the PSTN can no longer support a data-hungry, digital Britain”
Nick Whiting – BT Redcare
The switch-off is happening because while it’s served the country well, the PSTN can no longer support a data-hungry, digital Britain. The transition to fibre will provide us with stronger foundations and installers have an opportunity here to champion the move. They need to be able to explain to customers why it’s happening, its impact on alarm signalling – 27

“If the communication is right and the planning is done correctly, then PSTN upgrades can be carried out successfully and economically on an upcoming maintenance visit”
which isn’t necessarily apparent at first glance – and how new solutions can enhance protection. To keep premises safe past the switch-off, every device that relies on the PSTN will require a site visit to have something done to it. Getting customers future-proofed and ready will take a lot of planning and installers need to avoid a last-minute scramble as the switch off draws nearer. In order to add the most value to customers, it’s important that installers don’t neglect their own portfolios. They must start thinking about evolving offerings to include easy-to-install, IP-based solutions to ensure they don’t possess an over reliance on legacy devices. Installers are ideally placed to provide the best advice around the risk posed to customers, and those customers rely on that expertise. There also has to be some more education around what is happening and timelines. While December 2025 marks the last switchoff, Openreach is already issuing stop sells on some PSTN products based on FTTP coverage around exchanges, limiting legacy line sales and the work that can be carried out to them in those areas. Stop sells are issued to the communications providers who then pass the news onto their customers, meaning neighbours could face differing timelines. It won’t be a consistent rollout as it is the communication providers who will be carrying out the digital phone service upgrade, so installers will be in a better position if they proactively act to get ahead of the switch-off agenda.
Andy Fyvie – CSL
The move to an All IP Network will have a positive impact across the UK, providing ultra-fast fibre connectivity to homes and businesses. However, this will present a major challenge for the Security Sector as there are over 1 million monitored devices using PSTN today. Critically, if you don’t reconfigure or upgrade your PSTN device, it won’t be able to send alarms using the phone line. This could compromise your Police response, public 28
safety and property. The initial challenge is that the wider industry is working towards the final switchoff date of December 2025, when the reality is the work needs to start now. 220 exchanges nationwide, affecting over 2 million premises, have now announced a ‘Stop Sell’ of PSTN services starting from June 2021. New exchanges will be added every quarter up until September 2023. ‘Stop Sell’ doesn’t just mean you can’t buy new supply, it also means you can’t take over lines, transfer to different providers or reconnect a cancelled line. The BSIA is urging installers to make plans to migrate their customers to future-proofed signalling platforms now as any breaks in signalling may incur insurance policy violations. Clear communication to the end-user is very important as they need to know the impact on their alarm signalling and what their options are. If the communication is right and the planning is done correctly, then PSTN upgrades can be carried out successfully and economically on an upcoming maintenance visit. In some scenarios, there may only be four maintenance visits left to carry out this work.
Dave Roscoe – SSAIB
As we now live in a digital world, the existing network – which was originally designed for voice calls, rather than broadband – needs to be upgraded. This upgrade has been in progress for some years now, but the changes that are being made will result in the closure of the old telephony network by the end of 2025. Installers and maintainers need to make sure that they – and their customers – are not caught out by this impending switch from the old analogue network to the new digital network and ensure that they have everything in place that they need to, in order to be ready for the change. 2025 may be the final switchover date – and the older networks are still expected to be supported until that date – but there are already measures starting to be put into place now to halt the use of the older analogue services. This means that it may not be possible for installers to add new analogue lines – or take them over from someone else – well before then. Anyone who is unsure as to what will still work – and what won’t – should contact their

communications provider or product/service provider to clarify that they are “All IP ready” and will continue to work post-switchover. This is expected to be a monumental change for the security industry.
Laurence Kenny – Pyronix
As the PSTN switch off begins to rollout, alarm installers should take action now by going back out to their estate of systems and assessing whether the current installed hardware will continue to be operational – and signal correctly – following the switch over. It is also important for installers to appraise the rollout approach of BT Openreach, to make sure they are aware of which areas will be done and when, so that they can remain ahead of the curve. Whilst clearly there is an overhead in this activity, installers should see this as an opportunity to engage clients and begin to upgrade their estates with app compatible IP solutions, which unlocks greater value for the user. Professional monitoring alongside app compatible systems has become a norm, and this PSTN switch off will accelerate this trend. With such app solutions needing to utilise IP communications rather than PSTN, it makes sense that even more concentration will be placed on widening the capabilities of a security system via IP and the resulting basket of goods and services, which bring universal benefits to installers and end users alike.
The benefits of IP over PSTN are clear, however, as the PSTN switch off rolls out, installers do need to be mindful of their responsibility to professional monitoring on PSTN and making sure that the systems that require communication to the ARC still have this ability. Therefore, installers need to be proactively championing IP solutions, while also ensuring multi-path and GPRS are utilised to maintain professional monitoring with the ARC.
Ian Bennett – Fortus UK
With millions of users still using a fixed-line (PSTN) installers and integrators will need to move their security and fire systems to an alternative IP solution by the time the switch off occurs in their area, or risk being left with no connection. If a customers’ insurance cover and/or police response relies on alarm connectivity, there is even more reason to move to a more modern signalling device now. I’m sure many will take a cautious approach of waiting and watching however taking action now could prevent a panic later on! I would certainly be talking to the ARC to obtain a list of how many connections are relying on PSTN and approaching those customers sooner rather than later. Nothing happens instantly but planning and targeting each region by its switch off date would seem prudent. Remember this is starting to happen now so waiting for 2025 is not an option.
“It is important for installers to appraise the rollout approach of BT Openreach, to make sure they are aware of which areas will be done and when, so that they can remain ahead of the curve”
Matthew Holliday – NSI
The UK’s switch over from a predominantly copper based PSTN telephony network to an ‘All IP’ digital fibre infrastructure will create a network fit for the future with faster connection speeds and improved flexibility. This national upgrade will have a significant impact on the security industry, which is readying itself for the change. Some monitored premises are starting to benefit from ‘All IP’ this year. Approved companies are well-placed to support monitored alarm system customers during the transition. Close liaison to ensure customers are informed about the changes is important to ensure continuity of premises’ alarm monitoring is maintained. Technical and operational considerations for installers include equipment compatibility, possible disconnection problems, and risk of monitoring unavailability on local power failure. In terms of the compatibility of alarm transmission equipment with the ‘All IP’ network, installers may wish to forewarn their customers that not all equipment will continue to work with this new communications method. The ‘All IP’ network will be configured in two formats: ‘Fibre To The Premises’ (FTTP) and ‘Fibre To The Cabinet’ (FTTC), with FTTC being phased out at some future point in favour of FTTP. Backup power arrangements are fundamentally different in the ’All IP’ world. This means the provision of new backup power is essential and must be addressed to ensure continuity of alarm protection and monitoring. Installers will also want to inform their customers of potential alarm system disconnection from the telephone line during a premises’ switchover and provide alternative future-proof solutions to minimise this impact.

The ECHO initiative explained This month we talk to Mark Taylor of ECHO to find out more about the platform and why installers should be taking notice upported by all of the major security and fire industry bodies and emergency services, ECHO (Electronic Call Handling Operation) is currently going through testing before rolling out nationwide. The purpose of the scheme is to develop a single platform to help reduce false/unwanted alarms and to speed up response times in an all-digital world. As the results of the beta tests are now coming through (all successful so far) we thought it was the right time to speak to Mark Taylor, the General Manager at ECHO, to talk about the scheme and why installers should be taking notice. Mark’s role is to help ARCs and the police get ready for the rollout and is keen to stress the benefits of the scheme.
S
What is ECHO and who is behind it? ECHO is a not-for-profit limited company formed to facilitate collaboration between blue light services and the private sector and increase effectiveness of blue light response to emergency alarms. It responds to a desire by the National Police Chiefs’ Council to speed up the police response to verified alarm activations by providing a centralised, fully automated electronic alarm transmission service on demand between ECHO-connected alarm installations and ECHO-connected blue light services, and is
www.psimagazine.co.uk
due to become available nationally to all blue light services from spring of this year. The BSIA, NSI, FIA and ECA are playing a key role in ensuring the development of the ECHO service. Funded by the private sector, the new ECHO platform largely developed in 2019/20, is offering its service to blue light services ready to accept transmissions. These are expected to multiply during the course of 2021 with many police forces expressing interest in following the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) requirements for Intruder and Hold Up alarms. In essence, the communication channel between ARCs and Police Forces around the UK is going digital. It’s switching to ECHO – a hub (or link in the chain) –connecting premises around the UK to their Police Forces via their Alarm Receiving Centres. This secure hub will replace the ARCs-to-Police traditional telephone link. Police estimates show a saving of up to four minutes in response times, which in some instances could be a matter of life or death.
Mark Taylor, General Manager at ECHO
“Police estimates show a saving of up to four minutes in response times, which in some instances could be a matter of life or death”
Why do we need a national solution like ECHO? Replacing the existing manual means of ARCs contacting the police by phone to a more automated process, i.e. the automatic digital transmission of confirmed alarms from ARCs to

“The aim is to simplify and speed up priority signalling of confirmed alarms from ARCs to emergency services control rooms, reducing queueing and call handling times”
police control rooms, is not a new idea. Some forces have adopted automation on a limited, sometimes bi-lateral basis for some time. The key point now is that the industry is stepping up to develop a national standard approach across the UK. ECHO builds on the considerable strides made over the past 25 years in reducing the national average false security alarm rate by more than 90% (as measured by the police themselves). This is despite a growing number of properties protected by police response alarms since the original policy was introduced in 1995. This reduction reflects the professionalism, competence and general raising of standards in the installation of systems and 24/7 monitoring of premises, coupled with the marked improvements in the way security systems installers and ARCs operate and work together in the service they provide their clients. The aim is to simplify and speed up priority signalling of confirmed alarms from ARCs to emergency services control rooms, reducing queueing and call handling times, eliminating risk of human error, and allowing resources to be deployed in a smarter way. This automation of processing between our emergency services and Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs) will help improve use of resources by all parties involved in alarm monitoring and response, ultimately an improved service will be provided to victims of intruder crime – be they residential, commercial or public service premises – and the public purse, benefitting those who need the quickest response by enabling a more efficient response to genuine confirmed alarms. Why should installers be interested? What are the benefits for them? Installers should be interested for a number of good reasons, firstly because the introduction of ECHO is going to have an impact on the response of IAS & HUA, which they need to be aware of as ECHO rolls out across different police forces. Secondly, ECHO will help to provide them with a method of differentiating themselves and their offering to customers in the market. There is a clear benefit to customers of choosing an approved installer, as only alarm installations installed by police recognised approved companies, issued with a Police Unique
32
Reference Number (URN) and monitored 24/7 by an approved ECHO-connected Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) will receive the highest priority from ECHO-connected Police control rooms despatching police responders. Thirdly, police estimates indicate that ECHO can deliver time savings of up to 4 minutes in emergency instances where ‘every second counts’ - a vital factor in assuring premises owners and occupiers of the fastest possible response by ECHO-connected blue light services. What is the timeframe for the pilot tests and ultimate rollout? Both Essex Police and The Met have already successfully completed beta testing and conducted pilot phases ready for commencement of the ECHO roll out. In fact there will shortly be announcements from both of these police forces communicating the time frame by which they will expect all IAS & HUA to be delivered to them using the ECHO platform. A number of other police forces are already preparing to swiftly follow this lead, in the advanced stages of readiness to adopt and connect with ECHO. How do you think ECHO might evolve over the years following implementation? Initially the ECHO service will apply to intruder and hold up alarms on police response in ECHOconnected police force areas. Looking to the future, there is potential opportunity to apply ECHO technology in such areas as the fire, lone working and CCTV sectors, helping to increase security for people and property, and cost effective deployment by the emergency services. The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) is taking interest in the ‘police model’ for certificated intruder alarm signalling with its track record of thirty years. The fire and rescue services in England have reported that in the year ending Sept 2020 42% of fire alarms attended were false, a total of 226,000. ECHO could prove a catalyst for the fire and rescue services in learning from certificated verified alarm signalling advantages which the police have experienced, raising confidence in technology to deliver high quality verified alarm signals and increasing the prospect of greater efficiencies in the deployment of firefighting resources. PSI PREMIER AWARDS
Who will win in 2021?
The 2021 PSI Premier Awards campaign is now underway – and it is up to you to nominate the entries for the competition
H
ave you used a piece of kit or worked with a supplier that has been mightily impressive over the last twelve months? Do you think that your company’s products and services deserve to be recognised as the best that the sector has to offer? We are now asking installers and manufacturers to nominate the best products and to tell us who gives the best service, support and training for a PSI Premier Award in 2021.
Nominate online The annual PSI Premier Awards campaigns have recognised innovation and the highest achievers
that the industry has to offer from across a number of disciplines for many years. We are now asking for nominations for the products, services and suppliers that those working in the security industry think are the best in the market. After the deadline we will then collate all of the entries and, where necessary, ask a number of installers to give us their opinions on the nominated systems. This will give us a final listing of entries that we know will be the best of the best. The types of technologies we are looking for are those that are different, not “me too” systems
Hikvision and Pyronix were winners back in 2019. Who will be successful in 2021?
The award categories for 2021
We will be looking for nominations in the following categories. Be sure to read through the definitions to make sure that your entries match the criteria for being a finalist.
The categories are: • CCTV Product Of The Year - Any camera, DVR, NVR, lens etc • Intruder Alarm Product Of The Year - Any panel, sensor, bell or alarm peripheral • Access Control Product Of The Year - Any technology for access or perimeter control • Technology Innovation Of The Year - Any products outside of other technology categories such as HDDs, lighting, tools, communications etc • Software/Analytics Product Of The Year - Any product that utilises or manages data to improve security, performance or business intelligence purposes such as apps, VMS, analytics etc • Manufacturer Training Programme Of The Year - Any training courses, facilities etc organised by security systems manufacturers to educate installers • Distributor Of The Year - Best performing supplier for support, stock, training, warranties etc

PSI PREMIER AWARDS
All things being well regarding Covid restrictions, the PSI Premier Awards Dinner will be held on 1st July at Luton Hoo Warren Weir following the annual PSI Golf Day.
How to nominate To make sure that your favourites are featured in the PSI Premier Awards 2021 you only need to visit the PSI website and follow the nomination link to tell us: 1. Your details 2. Name of nominated product/company 3. Award category There are no costs involved in nominating or voting in the award campaign.
The deadline for nominations is 9th April 2021 Covid restrictions in 2020 meant we couldn’t hold an Awards Dinner but there was still plenty of excitement as winners such as ADI (left) and Ajax (right) received their trophies
and we want to hear about distributors that go above and beyond box-shifting. The UK security market is brimming with talent so we want to make sure we feature the best new releases of recent times and the suppliers that give the highest levels of support.
Once we have compiled the list of the finalists in each category we will run all of the details in PSI magazine and on our website. Note: Due to the huge number of manufacturers and distributors that we deal with, we can not send out personal reminders for companies to enter. If you miss the deadline, you miss out!

EDIT UKCA psi mar21_PSI_mar15 01/03/2021 18:20 Page 1
SECURITY
UKCA – are you up to the mark? mark – came into effect on 1 January 2021. The Northern Ireland Protocol aims to prevent a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland by ensuring that the province will continue to follow the EU’s rules on product standards. Critically, CE marking has continued to be used in Northern Ireland after 1 January 2021, to demonstrate products still meet EU standards. However, if a manufacturer uses a UK approved body – rather than an EU notified body – to carry out mandatory third-party assessments, then products must also carry the new UKNI mark alongside the CE mark. The UKNI mark will never be used on its own.
The key deadlines
What do the new UKCA and UKNI product marking systems mean for installers and specifiers of security technology? ith the post-Brexit transition period now over, a new product marking system covering goods that previously required CE marking has come into force. This system, known as the UKCA mark, includes products such as fire-resistant and emergency locks, panic exit devices and door closers. Understanding the new rules and regulations can be a daunting task, but it’s also a necessary one. As a result, installers and specifiers may have some questions about the markings so we spoke to Richard Bromley, Business Development Director at Union, part of the Assa Abloy Door Hardware Group, to find out all you need to know.
W
What is the UKCA mark? It is everyone’s responsibility throughout the supply chain to ensure properly certified and marked products are specified
38
The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is the new product marking system that will be used for goods being placed on the market in England, Scotland and Wales. It covers all goods that previously required CE marking, and must be undertaken by a UK-recognised ‘approved body’. An EU notified body, which would previously have been called upon for CE marking, cannot be used for UKCA marking. A Northern Ireland equivalent – the UKNI
During 2021, all products requiring conformity marking sold in Great Britain must either be UKCA marked from UK approved body, CE marked from a EU notified body or both. As of the 1 January 2022 CE marking will no longer be recognised in Great Britain, but will still be valid in Northern Ireland and the EU27. For CE marked products, there will be a ‘coexistence’ period until 31st December 2021, when these goods can continue to be sold in Great Britain. During this timeframe, it is expected that manufacturers will take steps to ensure existing CE marked products will have the UKCA mark applied in time for 1 January 2022, when the CE mark will cease to be recognised in Great Britain. Any goods already in the supply chain – and which have been made and shipped in good faith, before the new marks came into effect – remain wholly valid and legal. There is no need to scrap, return or replace such goods.
How does this affect installers and specifiers? While it is the hardware manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure their products conform to the standards, it is everyone’s responsibility throughout the supply chain to ensure properly certified and marked products are specified. Hardware covered by an EU harmonised standard being fitted onto a fire door must be appropriately marked. If it is not, then there could be a thorough investigation, plus potentially significant fines and penalties – including for installers and specifiers.

together raising standards
Meet the installer What would be a typical project for you? Stadia, transport, distribution and logistics hubs, factories and heavy industry, town centre schemes, retail and educational establishments (universities). Is third party accreditation beneficial? Yes, absolutely. What is the best thing about working in this industry? The fast pace of the industry means there are many changes, but the opportunity to deliver systems into smart buildings is very exciting for the industry. Do you have any 'go to' technology? Lenel, Dallmeier, Avigilon, Bi3 Analytics, Honeywell, PAC. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Previously, London and the South East was a problem area however, we have recruited recently and have a very settled team. Industry apprenticeships are the way forward. What would make your job easier? The pace of the industry is so fast moving and it appears standards are almost changing daily/weekly. We are often correcting noncompliant installations which haven’t been installed to the newer standard. The industry appears to lack highly-skilled individuals, which is why apprenticeships are definitely required. What is the industry’s biggest myth? Many people still hark back to the intruder bell type system believing that the police will respond instantly. What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? We don’t do home installations and we are at the top end of the market, so it has little impact on us. However, some people believe the bigger the company, the easier it is to integrate anything including home automation.
Security life with Steven Gardner of OCS Group UK based in Bristol Name: Steven Gardner Job title: Global Head of Security Time in security/fire: Since 1993 Company: OCS Group UK Location: Office base in Bristol but with national coverage Areas of expertise: Installation and maintenance of a range of electronic security systems including fire systems and automated barriers Accreditations: NSI Gold, CHAS, Constructionline, Safe Contractor Cyber Essentials Plus
What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? Technology that can be configured and installed more easily. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? Remember, it can’t always be done in one day! To have learnt and understood programming at an early stage. Will England ever win the World Cup again? I hope not as I’m Welsh, but my colleagues in Bristol are always hopeful! If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? I would help as many security charitable causes as I could. £25k is not enough to make a huge difference but imagine taking a homeless individual and giving him/her the chance to restart their career. There are many deserving causes out there.

The DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 is promoted as a 2MP Starlight IR Dual PTZ external network camera. It is from the Dahua WizMind range and is based on 2 x 1/2.8” CMOS sensors, one with a wide angle view and one with a 25x optical zoom lens. “Deep Learning algorithms” are used to support detection functions such as smart tracking of vehicles or humans with automatic filtering of false alarms. . Review: An interesting ONVIF compliant dome with high sensitivity and capable of tracking subjects while still maintaining an overview of the scene of interest. Good differentiation of targets to track humans and/or vehicles while preventing false alarms.
Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DUPZ
Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°. Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this.

Grow your dealership with a cloudbased security platform Enjoy a closer customer relationship and recurring monthly revenues In today’s rapidly evolving marketplace, if you’re a dealer or an installer in the security sector, you’re probably facing several difficult challenges. The first of these lies in finding the best way to streamline and consolidate your business. To ensure future success, you might also need to grow your business and develop a stronger, long-term relationship with your customers wherever possible. However, an increasing number of your customers are likely to be young, tech-savvy business owners who are looking for simple, instant security solutions that can be easily updated. You’re therefore likely to be facing growing demands for these types of solutions, and you will need to offer a better alternative than the DIY solutions that are readily available and are flooding the market. A cloud-based security platform not only meets this need but will also enable you to manage your customers’ requirements and systems more effectively. This will make you more proactive and will increase the opportunities for recurring monthly revenues (RMR). This is why at Honeywell, we’ve been investing heavily in our own cloud-based security solution, which offers a range of benefits to both dealers and end users. Our new MAXPRO Cloud platform makes life easier for your customers because it enables them to manage the security of multiple sites via the cloud – from wherever they are. But for dealers and installers, the beauty of this solution is that it provides a useful route towards healthy future growth. For more visit: mymaxprocloud.eu/MPC/Signin

Fire detection installations for two holiday resorts in Brazil Fire detection solutions from Global Fire Equipment (GFE) have been installed at two holiday resorts in Brazil that are owned and operated by the Vila Galé hotel chain. The equipment was installed as part of an upgrade to the fire detection system at Vila Galé Eco Resort Angra and during the construction of the brandnew Vila Galé Resort Touros. GFE’s distributor for both these projects was JVT Equipamentos who also acted as Vila Galé’s technical advisors on the projects. Vila Galé was already familiar with GFE’s fire detection solutions as prior to these latest installations, JVT Equipamentos had advised Vila Galé on the purchase of GFE equipment for two of its hotels in Brazil. Vila Galé Eco Resort Angra is a 5-star allinclusive eco resort located in Brazil's Atlantic forest. The hotel has 319 air-conditioned rooms, all of which have balconies with views of the sea, mountains or the pool. The resort spans 1,500 square metres and includes leisure areas, water sports, spa facilities, three bars and five restaurants. When Vila Galé was looking to replace the existing E3S fire detection system at Eco Resort Angra, it approached JVT Equipamentos to design
and supply a new system, with fire protection system supplier, Ekiper Fire, appointed to install and commission the system. The chosen 20-loop system comprises fire alarm control panels from GFE’s Octo+, Gekko and Node Plus ranges, along with approximately 900 ZEOS AS-S smoke detectors and six ZEOS AS-H heat detectors. Marco Vieira, Commercial Director at JVT Equipamentos, comments: “The installation process at Eco Resort Angra ran smoothly and the hotel was able to remain open to guests throughout the installation works. One of the challenges Ekiper Fire’s installation engineers faced was with the length of the existing cables used throughout the hotel. To avoid having to change the existing infrastructure, we advised the project engineers to cut the cable loops in half, reducing their individual length and to create a data network for use with GFE’s Chameleon Networking System, in order to meet Vila Galé’s requirements.” As part of the contract, Ekiper Fire will provide ongoing maintenance support for the hotel’s fire detection system. Fire detection equipment from GFE has also been installed at the hotel chain’s brand-new 514room Vila Galé Resort Touros in Rio Grande do Norte on the coast of northeast Brazil. Vila Galé Resort Touros is a 5-star all-inclusive resort which incorporates accommodation with a restaurant, water park, kids’ club, children's playground, outdoor swimming pool and bar. JVT Equipamentos was appointed to design and supply the fire detection system for the new hotel, with fire systems installer TecneTecnologia undertaking the installation. The installation process took 45 days in total, with all work completed prior to the hotel opening to guests. The 18-loop GFE system supplied by JVT Equipamentos comprises Node Sub Panels, Juno Net and JUNIOR MINI-REP panels, along with more than 1,000 Zeos AS-S smoke detectors and 43 AS-H heat detectors. Jose Antonio Bastos, Vila Galé’s Operational Director for Brazil, comments: “Our Eco Resort Angra and Resort Touros are the third and fourth of our Brazil-based hotels to benefit from GFE’s fire detection systems, and construction work is already underway on two more hotels in Brazil where we have also chosen to install GFE equipment. ”

Luton business park enhances its security measures Butterfield Business Park in Luton, a multipurpose development, has enhanced its security measures with a fibre optic network, CCTV and deep learning analytics technology, specified, installed and maintained by Amthal Fire and Security. The business park, managed by Lambert Smith Hampton, covers a total site area of 24 acres and is home to a range of commercial buildings. With expansion plans already in place, the site needed to ensure upmost security. Whilst the existing system was being managed on site, Amthal, with which Lambert Smith Hampton had an existing relationship, was asked to review the security arrangements with a view to update and accommodate the need for a scalable solution. Amthal installed a fibre optic network across the entire site to enable high-speed transmission and future expansion of the system. IP CCTV technology was also specified, incorporating Dahua cameras, to support facial recognition and IR distances of up to 500m coverage, together with deep-learning based auto tracking and perimeter protection. Featuring Starlight+ technology for low light performance, the new system enables monitoring across the site with clear and relevant images. Together with automatic number-plate recognition cameras positioned at the entrance and exit, Amthal’s solution supports 24-hour security across the site that can be remotely monitored. Kelly Cartwright, Regional Facilities Manager at Lambert Smith Hampton: “Butterfield Business Park is a busy development, day and night, designed purposely as a multi-purpose business
Fire and alarm system fitted in three new tower blocks C-TEC’s Hush Pro BS 5839-6 Grade C domestic fire detection and alarm system has been chosen for three tower block developments in Manchester. Located in the centre of Piccadilly, Oxygen Towers is a set of three 31-storey, 16-storey and 10-storey buildings consisting of 345 1, 2 and 3bedroomed apartments and twelve family townhouses. According to C-TEC, the Hush Pro will integrate with the site’s BS 5839 part 1 landlord system to offer a higher level of fire protection than the Grade D unmonitored battery alarm systems typically used in domestic installations. As a fully-monitored BS 5839 part 6 Grade C system, Hush Pro reports open and short circuit faults and operation faults back to the fire panel and allows management and maintenance companies to remotely monitor the system. Once the project is complete, each of the flats will feature a low-level Hush Pro Controller connected to a series of Hush Pro smoke detectors, base sounders, multi-sensors and heat detectors all seamlessly interfaced to a

and leisure site. When it came to reviewing security, we needed to balance a welcoming feel with the need to ensure peace of mind for all our residents and guests, but also ensure any new system was scalable to suit the ambitious expansion plans. “The extensive capability of the CCTV solution is particularly effective for providing clear and relevant images, regardless of lighting conditions, time-of-day or object movement.” Amthal is now working in partnership with the facilities management team on a maintenance contract with Butterfield Business Park. Paul Rosenthal, Amthal Sales Director added: “Butterfield Business Park is an extensive site that requires remote monitoring on a 24/7 basis. And together with its mixed-use development and expansion plans, any security installation had to carefully consider the different scenarios across the site and differentiate what is expected activity by day and night, with an ability to act fast. There are clear benefits for the security and facilities team who can monitor activity remotely at all times, with clear visibility on activity and alarms triggered by target types (human and vehicle,) reducing false alarms.”

network of C-TEC 4-loop ZFP addressable fire control panels to provide all-encompassing fire and fault monitoring of the system. If, for any reason, part of the domestic fire alarm is compromised, this will immediately be reported to the building management team to allow them to action the fault and re-instate full fire detection coverage to the flat.

Cloud based access control technology for Ealing Council
“Without the cloud any problems and issues would need to be dealt with by office-based individuals, which is obviously restrictive and can lead to a delayed response” 54
Located in the heart of west London, Ealing Council serves the residents and businesses of the capital's fourth largest borough. With a vast housing portfolio and a commitment to keeping residents as safe and secure as possible, Ealing Council benefits from the use of PAC’s cloud based access control solution. The London Borough of Ealing comprises seven major towns – Ealing, Acton, Greenford, Hanwell, Northolt, Perivale and Southall – and Ealing Council’s task is to provide a diverse range of services to 350,000 residents across the area. In addition to carrying out property allocation, repairs, rent collection, homelessness services and estate management, Ealing Council is responsible for ensuring the security and safety of the tenants living in its 300+ housing blocks. Daljit Gill is electrical services manager at Ealing Council and comments, “When it comes to administering our multi-site housing portfolio, Ealing Council recognises the advantages that access control technology brings in terms of our ability to effectively access information, issue and configure key fobs and check occupancy status. As a longstanding PAC customer, we chose the PAC Residential Cloud as the central hub of our access control system, which currently comprises around 1,100 doors and 500 controllers.” The PAC Residential Cloud allows organisations to remotely manage and monitor their access control systems. Meanwhile, the PAC controllers used as part of the Ealing Council system utilise the GPRS platform, which is a cost effective means of connecting remote sites via a mobile network. Sam Flowers, regional sales manager at PAC, explains, “Daljit and his team can address technical issues, deal with key fob management, examine diagnostics, view system status, set and unset a system, and gain access to event logs and reports – all from a remote location. Without the cloud any problems and issues would need to be dealt with by office-based individuals, which is obviously restrictive and can lead to a delayed
response. We also provided an online training programme to help customers get the best out of their systems as well as providing full technical support.” Daljit Gill said of the system, “I can address connection issues, manage the system and troubleshoot from wherever I happen to be, using my PC, tablet or smartphone. Not only is this convenient, it also saves me a huge amount of time, as I don’t have to go into the office to log-in. Two of my colleagues also have permission to use the system remotely – although we could share access with up to 15 administrators if required with each person only given access to information that relates directly to their role. One of the main features of the system is that it is fully auditable, meaning that any activity can be monitored in real time and traced directly back to a specific user via their unique password.” Sam Flowers adds, “The data collected by the access control system can be used to issue an alert if a resident’s key fob hasn't been used during a specific period, identify patterns of behaviour that could suggest illegal activity, flagup if someone is subletting a property or even detect if a tenant is using a cloned key fob. If an alert is activated, measures can then be taken to deactivate a specific key fob. Furthermore, the PAC Residential Cloud has also helped Ealing Council adopt a business as usual approach during the coronavirus pandemic by limiting physical interaction, while still enabling a prompt and effective response.” As well as enjoying the operational advantages of the PAC Residential Cloud, Ealing Council is also planning to advance its transition to a fully IP based access control system by upgrading to PAC’s 512DCi digital networkable access controllers. Daljit Gill concludes, “Installing the PAC 512DCi’s will allow us to maximise operational effectiveness through our investment in the PAC Residential Cloud. We will also be able to utilise PAC’s high frequency OPS MIFARE DESFire EV1 readers, which have been tested to meet AES 128 bit compliance. This will further reduce the risk of key fob cloning and ensure that our tenants benefit from improved levels of security.”

“Using Camect we are getting crisp, accurate alerts into the Control Centre and none of the old environmental false alerts. It’s exactly what we were waiting to appear on the market”
Analytics brings benefits for alarm receiving centre RE:SURE, a monitoring centre based in Northern Ireland serving the UK and Ireland markets, has deployed Camect’s smart camera hub to many of their CCTV remote monitoring sites. The camera hubs analyse video in real time to detect and label moving objects including people, vehicles, and deliveries meaning that the monitoring centre is now able to provide more accurate and responsive security monitoring for their clients’ homes and businesses. RE:SURE MD John MacMahon says: “Rather than being a traditional ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre), we decided years ago to get a lot more proactive in terms of advising our install partners which systems work. All too often, distributors would say “yes, of course our system can accurately detect a person/vehicle”. Of course, more often than not this was not the case, and everyone suffers as a result. “Usually, the ARC staff becomes overwhelmed with false activations, cameras have to be suspended, and in essence the whole system breaks down as there ends up being blind spots
CCTV helps reduce traffic levels and reduce emissions The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham has installed Videalert CCTV enforcement cameras for temporary vehicle restriction zones to stop non-residents rat running through SW6 streets including Harwood Terrace, Imperial Road and Bagley’s Lane. This new scheme followed a six-month trial closure of Harwood Terrace, which began in October to try to reduce the 92 per cent of traffic in the area that came from people who live outside the borough. The cameras use ANPR technology to capture the number plates of motorists who enter these roads with fines issued to those that do not hold a valid Hammersmith and Fulham residents' parking permit.

everywhere. Even worse than that is the system wouldn’t detect at all. So we decided to find out for ourselves, as ultimately we are the ones that suffer the most day in, day out with bad systems. We have consequently been following this space very closely and watching it evolve over the last decade. “Using Camect we are getting crisp, accurate alerts into the Control Centre and none of the old environmental false alerts. It’s exactly what we were waiting to appear on the market and the set up time from a technical perspective is also a massive advantage -it's as close to plug and play as you can get.” Camect’s founder Arup Mukherjee: “Supporting efficient monitoring centre operations is a priority for us. The diligence that goes into RE:SURE’s monitoring service has made them an excellent partner. RE:SURE has long recognised the value that practical analytics provide, so they soon recognised that Camect alerts allow them to hone in on activity that presents the highest risk to their clients.” Camect and RE:SURE aim to continue their partnership to deploy analytics in Northern Ireland. Nine Videalert cameras have been installed as part of the scheme. These ONVIF compliant HD cameras capture images that minimise discardrates and help reduce the number of appeals. This data is transmitted to Videalert’s DfT Manufacturer Certified hosted platform which integrates with the council’s permit systems to ensure that resident and key ‘permitted vehicles’ can pass through control points and move around the area without obstacle. Visitors and delivery drivers are accommodated within the scheme via a data push from the host system. It is anticipated that this scheme will reduce the through traffic and improve bus journey times. Traffic previously able to cut through to New Kings Road will also be eliminated helping to reduce noise, air pollution and vehicle emissions.

APPOINTMENTS Mike Reddington ECHO (Electronic Call Handling Operations) has announced Mike Reddington, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), has been appointed to its Board of Directors. Mike’s appointment comes after Dave Wilkinson stepped down in December to focus on key activities in his ongoing role of Director of Technical Services at the BSIA. Dave was part of the duo alongside Martin Harvey who founded ECHO in August 2017. Martin explained, “Mike with over 25 years’ commercial experience in the security sector strengthens the ECHO Board with further business leadership expertise. His background including time at leading blue chip organisations such as Honeywell and ADI prior to joining the BSIA in January 2019, will be invaluable as ECHO moves into full service delivery.”
David Salisbury Zicam Integrated Security has announced the promotion of David Salisbury to managing director as founder Milan Mazic becomes CEO. David has worked in the industry for 17 years and has spent the last 13 of these with Zicam. He joined the company in the role of engineer, progressing after four years to become senior engineer. This role, which he held for nine years, was to commission larger projects and support on the technical side. He then became a project manager, helping with bidding and specifying, while still offering technical support. In November 2020 he became general manager and a director of the company, a role which was swiftly upgraded to managing director just two months later. The appointment comes as Zicam looks to build on this progress, with a strong focus on nurturing customer relationships remaining at the forefront of its growth strategy for 2021, and David will continue to be very much involved in client relationship management. David said of the appointment: “This promotion is a real career highlight for me, as it has always been a huge goal of mine. Thanks to the support and help of founder, Milan Mazic, over the years, this has now been accomplished.”
Sam Fregapane Sam Fregapane has been appointed as Senior Business Development Manager at Lodge Service, to support security system users in the corporate, logistics and retail sectors. He joins from Matthews Environmental Solutions and has previously worked at OCS, Chubb Security, Atalian Servest and Courage. “There’s a new demand for remote monitoring services, to minimise interaction of security officers with staff, customers and other people on site. There are new opportunities with the range of technologies to monitor queues, empty buildings and especially logistics chains, given the major increase in goods distribution and home delivery,” says Sam. 11
