Sentimental journey

Technology always advances, but there are times when we fondly look back at the systems we used prior to the ones we have today. Yet not everyone shares our love for old kit that has long since had its time in the sun

Apricorn, a manufacturer of USB drives, recently announced new findings from a Twitter poll that highlighted the lasting impact of legacy technology. The poll ran over three days in January 2023 and the results revealed the tech that flopped and the resurgence of well-loved technology staples from the 1980s.

When asked what tech they would most like to see revived, more than 30% want to bring back the nostalgia of the dial telephone and just 21% calling for continued use of pagers. However, it’s clear the fax machine has met its end with just 18% wishing for a return. Floppy disks also officially flopped with only 22% voting for them, hardly surprising given the USB storage options that replaced them.

Yet, it’s no surprise that we want to return some of our old favourites in the office as we often link those systems to the good times we had when they were in use. Sentimentality, and all that. But can you really see the office of today with its hotdesking, Zoom calls and remote connectivity going back to the days of wired-in telephones? Also, can you remember what is was really like when you had a office of dial phones ringing with actual bells inside and the whirring of the dials? Noisy to say the least. Couple that with the fact that in recent studies it has been found that around 80% of millennials don’t like answering the telephone at work finding them intrusive and anxiety-inducing due to the unknown aspect of who is on the other end wanting to talk to them. It’s extremely unlikely therefore that the latest generation to hit the job market would be keen on using the kit that their parents thought was ground-breaking in the 80s.

However, across the board technology generally improves as our reliance upon it dictates and changes. It also evolves as new methods of achieving results are brought to market. In the security sector, for example, we’ve seen great strides being taken in the reduction of unwanted alarms through the adoption of analytics, better detection sensors and video verification. It’s the same with surveillance as the development of IP cameras have made CCTV anything but “Closed” as you can access, or grant access, to footage from anywhere in the world and use Cloud technology to recall and analyse and share recorded content.

I’m sure there are plenty of you that occasionally look back fondly upon the systems you specified and installed in days gone by, but it’s unlikely that you would realistically want to be fitting any of it today given the potential problems that would arise. Perhaps if you did, you would be joining some millennials in their anxiety about what happens when the phone rings unexpectedly.

Mayor of the West Midlands takes a factory tour

Assa Abloy Opening Solutions UKI recently hosted Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street for a behind-the-scenes tour of its manufacturing facilities. The Portobello site has been operating out of the West Midlands for many years, employing over 600 people, making up a large proportion of the Assa Abloy UKI workforce in the UK.

The manufacturing site has seen significant investment over the past decade, and during his visit Mayor Andy Street was given a behindthe-scenes tour meeting many members of the operational teams, from apprentices at the start of their career to some of the longestserving employees.

Speaking about his visit to the facilities in Willenhall, Mayor Andy Street said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour. After having the chance to interact with employees old and new – spanning the spectrum from apprentices to colleagues who

have served the firm for many years – I gained a much deeper appreciation for the remarkable heritage of this company here in the West Midlands.”

Skills for Security maintains OFSTED status

Skills for Security, the fire and security apprenticeship provider, has maintained its OFSTED Good Provider status after a 500% growth in just three years.

Under the new leadership team which was introduced in August 2019, the organisation has increased its apprenticeship provision from 100 live apprentices in one location to over 500 enrolled up across the UK, from Scotland to Cornwall. As part of its strategy to be a national provider that delivers accessible training, six sites have been opened across the UK in Warrington, Watford, Glasgow, Mansfield, Birmingham, and Oxford, whilst also supporting regional and local objectives by increasing its staff base from nine to 46. In January 2022, SfS secured a direct ESFA contract for the delivery of 16-18 traineeship provisions, which is seeing strong outcomes of unemployed learners progressing into full-time employment within the fire and security sector.

David Scott, Managing Director at Skills for Security, said: “After what has been a rollercoaster three years of growth, new centres, and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, I am over the moon to have maintained our Good Provider status with OFSTED. With seven inspectors across three of our delivery sites, the dedication, time and effort from the SfS team is to be commended. It is great to read in our report just how close we were to grade 1 (Outstanding) in a number of areas of the inspection. For context, only 3% of training providers achieve Outstanding but this is our aspiration.”

Halma expands in fire sector with acquisition

Halma has announced the acquisition of Thermocable (Flexible Elements) in Bradford for its safety sector fire detection company, Apollo Fire Detectors. Thermocable is a developer and manufacturer of Linear Heat Detectors (LHDs). The acquisition expands the range of devices offered by Apollo.

“Thermocable’s specialist technologies will further enhance Apollo’s existing strengths in fire detection and alarm systems for industrial and commercial customers,” said Andrew Williams, Group Chief Executive of Halma. “They will enable Apollo to address a greater range of customer needs in niche applications for a variety of sectors such as urban infrastructure and transportation, logistics, natural resources and emerging applications in renewable power generation.”

“Our long-term growth is driven by increasing urbanisation, population growth and safety regulation,” said David Bulley, Managing Director of Apollo. “With the acquisition of Thermocable, we will serve a greater range of customer needs globally while offering an extra layer of protection to help extinguish fires at the source before they cause serious harm.”

Security hub designed to tackle site crime

Thermal cameras with edgebased analytics and audio

Hanwha Techwin Europe has launched three additions to the Wisenet T range, the TNOL3030T, TNO-L4030T, and TNO-L4030TR. These thermal cameras feature a low frame rate of 8fps, which means they fall outside of Regulation (EU) 2021/821 and the Wassenaar Arrangement and are therefore not classed as “military use”, therefore enabling them a quick delivery time. They come with maximum 320x240 (QVGA) and 640x480 (VGA) resolution support and a built-in 13.7/13 mm fixed lens.

IP Bridge for event alert technology

Alertex from Luminite is a wireless critical alert system which provides a clear warning to an event requiring action such as lockdown in schools or fire on a construction site. The Alertex IP Bridge has been designed to connect to a local area network via ethernet or wi-fi allowing the system to be remotely monitored from one central location. The Bridge allows users to see which Alertex units have been activated, re-set the system, receive alerts on missed calls and low battery and notify key personnel of events by email or text so that the appropriate action can be taken. Once set up the Alertex system can be remotely monitored and tested by the installer. Once the administrator credentials are set up and verified using the user e-mail account address, you can log into the AVA Aware site. The sign-in screen gives a number of quick guides to the key features and confirms the camera connection, the camera firmware will be updated if necessary and the main menu dashboard display is shown. The Video view option gives access to the window where screen layouts can be assigned, and available cameras displayed. Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome browsers have had the most testing with Aware software so are recommended for use.

The AVA dome is an NDAA compliant vandal resistant (IK10) day /night IP66 dome for indoor or outdoor use with 4K imaging, built-in microphones and edge analytics.

The dome uses Cloud connectivity to provide simple set-up and management with factory installed certificates. The dome’s aluminium body measures 15 x 15 x 96 cm and weighs 1.2kg. Its 4K 1/1.8” sensor has 3840 x 2160 pixels and is specified to 0.15 lux minimum illumination colour.

Getting started

The dome is supplied with its mounting plate attached to the main assembly. This can be used for wall or ceiling mounting with a replaceable side entry blanking plate on the main body for surface cable entry. Four captive Torx screws hold the main body to this mounting plate and the top cover is then held with a further four captive Torx screws. The RJ45 camera feed is fed through a grommet in the assembly base using the feed-through cover supplied. A range of alternative mounting accessories is available.

To access the camera, it is necessary to link to it via the AVA Aware cloud system. This can be accessed via the QR code that is on the base of the camera, under the top cover, or on the back of the dome’s box.

Once powered up the dome has three status LEDs that show power, network link, and connection to the AVA Aware cloud service. There are an additional five LEDs that are used to assist with levelling of the device when installing on wall or ceiling.

The dome is supplied with a fitted 512GB Western Digital “Purple” micro-SD card for edge storage. The card is within the main body so it is necessary to remove the cover should you need to access this.

In normal usage just metadata is sent to the cloud so there is limited bandwidth demand on the system unless licenced cloud storage is used.

A default daily maintenance connection is set for the early hours of the morning, this can be changed to weekly if preferred. This ensures that the latest firmware is always installed in the camera

The browser link to the AVA Aware software begins with an opening screen showing icons for the following options:

Video view – Access to camera views, window layouts and playback timelines.

Map view – Add and remove maps and their associated devices.

Devices – Add or remove devices and edit their settings. Profiling and grouping options.

These icons can be selected directly, or a drop-down list is given from the + symbol on the top tab bar. Setting up and editing the rules for the various detection modes is simple and clearly laid out. Areas of the screen can be masked out to ignore valid movements and stationary vehicles ignored.

Once configured, the camera can be accessed directly from a web browser but it will have a random 20 character password that has been assigned by the system. This password is available through the Settings/View Credential option and can be changed if compromised.

RTSP connection can be enabled but is securely controlled. An external user must be set up with 10-character minimum password assigned. The necessary command string is given in the Stream Setting window.

The AVA Aware front end allows for maps to be created with a range of device icons to add to the image and the capability to link to the people counting function.

Performance

The four infrared illuminators above the lens have a range of up to 30 metres.

An array of four microphones mounted in the dome cover can be used for audio recording along with detection of events including Glass break, Loud noise, Screaming and Smoke alarms, more categories are stated to be in development.

Default analytics include Person and Vehicle detection, Line crossing, Appearance, Loitering, Heat mapping and a range of audio detections. The Person detection can differentiate between male and female depending on the field of view and environmental factors and there are selectable vehicle types. Colour selection can be made but performance would be dependent on factors such as scene lighting.

The viewing pane border changes to Red for rules identified in the scene and Orange for anomalies, with a 30-minute graphical indication of detected movement beneath each image pane.

Replay is selected from one of the lower right-hand icons below the live screen or the embedded replay icon. This takes the user to a similar display but with a 30-minute timeline with a graphical display of events beneath the image. This timeline can be expanded or reduced to show the time period required. The graph shows the amount of general movement in the scene in grey, any Person detection in light blue, and Vehicle movement in purple. Simple transport controls allow for playback speeds of 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x both forward and backward.

Searching for a person or vehicle in the last 12 hours results in a collection of thumbnail images that can be played as short clips or added above the top row to build a case file. A “similarity” search can be performed on these clips, and this will highlight any similar clips as thumbnails. These collections of image files can then be saved to external drives for distribution, or allocated for electronic access, subject to suitable security being set.

The dome can be accessed from a wide range of devices with no requirement to download applications.

Conclusion

A well-engineered dome with impressive analytics capabilities and straightforward secure connectivity. Ideal for diverse or centralised systems with flexible notifications that can be received and managed from anywhere with available internet access.

Acquiring security expertise

Last month we announced the news that Johnson Controls had acquired another installation business further increasing its UK presence. PSI caught up with Richard Jones to look a little closer into the story

Aquick search of the PSI website will show you that Johnson Controls has made a number of UK acquisitions over the last few years. Companies such as CDS Integrated Security Systems, GEM Security Services, Envision Intelligent Solutions and Vindex Systems have joined the organisation adding new expertise and technology services to the portfolio. To find out more we spoke to Richard Jones, Managing Director Fire and Security at Johnson Controls to discuss the reasoning behind the deals and what makes a company a good acquisition target.

Last year you acquired a number of installation companies. What was it about those businesses that made them attractive targets?

The UK&I Johnson Controls fire and security business installs and maintains technology for tens of thousands of customers, and we generate substantial revenues. Typically, what we look for in terms of acquisitions are companies that have got a strong services element and solutions expertise in a particular arena, as well as good customer segment focus and a strong team of people. We have found that if a business has those sorts of ingredients, combined with the support and the infrastructure that we have, plus the focus around technology, we can generate really good growth and development for those organisations.

Have you got other plans to acquire?

We have strong organic growth, but I think in a systems and ser vices business, if you can acquire to complement that progression, it can be very beneficial - so we tend to look at growth through both of those channels. Therefore, we will continue to look to add complementary businesses that really add some extra value. The CDS acquisition was a good case in point as they bring a very strong public space expertise in applications including town centre CCTV, public area security and car parking services. In addition to that there were geographical benefits too, with CDS operating in the Southwest, Wales and M4 corridor, complementing our Integrated Solutions

business focused around London and the Southeast. Combining the two together we have a really aligned capabilities allowing us to build out our national strength and coverage.

What trends have you noticed in the development of technology and the applications of security technology?

We’ve picked up a few, mainly around the rapid digitisation of security and the increased use of robotics and AI, and again this is an example of how acquisitions can help us develop our offerings. In early 2022, we acquired a business called Envision Intelligent Solutions, which is in the rapid deployment sector, because we saw very strong development of the temporary video and access solutions side of the market. This service involves providing a temporary solution that’s monitored and managed for the client in the early construction phase, within infrastructure, and where customers are looking at the temporary hardening of security. Given the advances in remote systems and battery technology, along with the ability to do remote diagnostics, the rapid deployment segment looked to us like a really interesting segment. Therefore, Envision joined Johnson Controls last year and it has given us a route into working in the very early stages in the development of a building to protect groundworks and perimeters through the life cycle of the building. This illustrates again where we can acquire to add a complimentary technology to our portfolio.

In terms of trends, we obviously see the whole connected environment ever-increasing; whether you take traditional security alarms and the change out of the PSTN network giving us the opportunity to replace older systems to with upgraded systems that can be connected or with fibre connectivity to supporting customers with remote diagnostics through to CCTV with cloudbased storage, the connectivity theme runs through all of the latest disciplines.

How do you see security and fire systems being a part of connected building applications?

We have our OpenBlue Solutions and our OpenBlue platform framework. And with the number of devices and sensors that go into

buildings nowadays, whether that be in lighting, air conditioning systems or in fire and security systems, there is a lot of data being collected. Increasingly we work with customers to utilise that information to draw it up into an overall solution that enables a customer to look at, for example, energy consumption. So, the data collected in the building allows you to see how the building is being used and how services like lighting and heating are being optimised. The technology allows you to use that data and to manage the building in a much better way. Then if you look at buildings, and you look at what we would term secure buildings, you’ve got the same capability to use the data much more intelligently in terms of security and fire protection.

An interesting trend that came to the fore through COVID was that many large offices became much more multi-tenanted. This means that the management of that office block now has to be very different in terms of the intelligence being applied. In practice services like frictionless access control have become much more commonly used for multi-occupancy premises, and the management of fire systems has changed due to the higher footfall of a busy building. The technology already existed to cope with these concerns, but it was COVID that really accelerated the adoption of the technology. This was certainly the case for the uptake of our OpenBlue platform in smart buildings.

How does your Lifecycle Services offering relate to security systems?

There are two elements to this service. We have always been able to provide an end user or

M&E contractor with a fire system or a security system, but now that we work with Envision on rapid deployment this allows us to be involved from early-stage construction. This means that we can supply and maintain services from the very first stage of development of the building, right through to its completion and then its use. Should the building become vacant at any point we can maintain the protection or change it as required. The entire lifetime of the premises is supported, monitored, and maintained. The other application of Lifecycle Services involves issues like the environment sustainability and the OpenBlue element of the business in that we can provide a range of services to ensure that aspects like energy efficiency and sustainability are continually assessed to meet current standards and surpass evolving requirements towards carbon neutral. This is particularly prevalent with the 200+ hospitals that we work with on concerns such as clean air management and services beyond security and fire.

What is the security system of 2030 going to look like?

When you consider the pace of technology development prior to COVID-19 and then the dramatic change that the initial lockdown period had on all of our working lives, how we used buildings and went about daily work, it sped up the adoption of some technologies innovations because there was widespread change. Connected technology really got a kick start from that period in 2020-21. One of the fortunate things with the field that we are in is that a lot of alarm systems have always been connected, we’ve had ARCs and monitoring centres for decades, but COVID opened up the realisation that you can connect technology in a much more sophisticated way. The industry may have been in a routine of doing what it did with the monitoring of alarms and responding to alerts, but I think in the last few years this has really accelerated the digitisation and really opened people’s eyes to what else you can do with technology and how you can better use a building.

In answer to the question, I think the next seven years through to 2030 is going to see an acceleration of that adoption of the technology. Seeing sensors and detectors as data gathering tools will drive convergence and enable people to make much more informed decisions about security, fire, business, and environmental concerns.

Vehicle tool theft rise reported

Metropolitan Police data has revealed that tool theft from a vehicle has increased by 25% in the last year – accounting for a third of all tool thefts recorded in 2021 and 2022

There were 34,712 tools stolen in London alone from January 2021 to October 2022. That’s a 62% increase on the 21,445 tools stolen from January 2019 to December 2020.

Tradespeople are ten times more likely to experience tool theft from a vehicle than they are from a building site or their place of work – with only 14% of cases leading to the suspect being identified.

The Tool Theft in London 2022 report, collated by London telehandler hire company Herts Tools, come from a freedom of information request to the Metropolitan Police. The data reveals the impact of tool theft in London, the most affected industries and the types of tools that are targeted most often.

Just 0.3% of all cases (3 cases per 1000) between January 2021 and October 2022 ended in a charge for the suspect. A suspect is 20 times less likely to be charged for tool theft from a vehicle than they are for any other theft category.

Stefano Lobban, Director at Herts Tools, said: “It’s disappointing to see that the tool theft epidemic is getting worse in London, particularly

from vehicles that now often have theft deterrents in place.

“It’s not surprising to see that high-price items such as powered hand tools are still the most sought-after by thieves. Amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, the trade for secondhand (and potentially stolen) tools is booming, tempting more people into stealing tools.

“We’re urging those across all trades to double-check they have theft security measures in place, to avoid falling victim to crime.”

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, said: “With eight in ten builders reporting that they have had tools stolen before, tool theft is a serious issue for Britain’s tradespeople. It’s a shame that over a 40-year working life, tradespeople will typically lose £10,000 and six working days to tool theft. Aside from the detrimental financial impact, tool theft causes mental health issues and stress for builders.

“Tradespeople can protect themselves by bringing tools inside at night, adding extra locks to their van and marking tools. Installing CCTV system is a further option, as well as registering tool serial numbers on an online database. They should also check their insurance policies to see what they have covered.”

The evolution of IFSEC –

Sustainability, wellbeing, distributors and a new train!

This month we talk to Gerry Dunphy, Event Director – Fire & Security at Informa, about what we can expect from IFSEC this year when the industry heads to Excel, London from 16-18th May, fifty years after the first event

How are the plans going for IFSEC 2023?

As usual, never enough days in the year but we’re very pleased with the exhibitor uptake with several major international companies returning to the show, and in terms of visitor registrations, we’re currently 10% ahead of where we were this time last year which is pleasing. There are multiple projects going on and we have some new features for 2023, so we expect a very different show from what people have experienced previously. It’s more focused, reflects important areas such as partnerships and we’re now fully committed to our sustainability agenda which will aim to make all our shows accountable and positive impact businesses. We’re also bringing the mental health and wellbeing conversation into the event with a new partnership with a leading UK charity.

Different in what way?

The IFSEC of 2022 was the first one back after the challenges of COVID and while I think people were very pleased with the outcomes, we know that the world we live in today is a very different space, particularly in regard to

the way we approach business meetings and exhibitions. IFSEC 2023 will be a reimagined event not only in terms of visitor expectations, but also taking on board other issues of modern life such as sustainability. We’re actively engaging with exhibitors to consider how they build their stands, where the materials are sourced, the recycling elements and waste reductions. From our point of view, we’re looking to constantly streamline what we’re what we’re doing as a proposition in line with making the shows great experiences for the community. As always, content is hugely important in giving us the opportunity to enable people to understand and learn from the shows; but how we do that must reflect all the changes that are going on around us.

So, what will be new this year?

The big project for this year is the establishment of the Distributor Network within the show which will enable visitors to directly engage with the distribution side of the market. Historically, trade shows are tricky for distributors to get the most out of because they stock so many products and brands, so it’s always been a

challenge knowing where to focus. We’ve redefined the way distributors participate at the show so that they become more of a partner and will be able to invite their customers to the show with various incentives and promotions and crucially introduce customers to their technology suppliers. There will be bespoke distributor hubs on the show floor, each one purpose-built and sustainable in design where the distributors can host their own events and customer sessions. For example CIE Group will have a coffee bar, while ADI Global, Oprema, Nimans, DVS, DTS, Dynamic CCTV, Security Dynamics, Cop Security, Puretech, and Mast Digital will host various customer engagements and activities on their own stands. Each hub will be a place where installers can go for a chat, catch up with the latest news and then be taken to see manufacturers by their distributor. This makes it easier for the installer to engage with the manufacturer and to talk technology or technical issues etc. We think this will work for all parties involved and we can tell from the take up that it’s been well received. The other big focus this year is a partnership with the charity Mates in Mind which concerns mental health and wellbeing. The security sector can be a very challenging industry with plenty of lone worker time and managing SME businesses in an economic downturn, so we’re partnering with the BSIA to promote the charity at the event. The charity will be running a seminar and we encourage visitors to come

along and have a look at the support on offer. So often people suffer in silence, yet there is help available and it’s time to start the conversation. The other big bit of news is the Elizabeth Line railway is now fully functional and provides seamless access to ExCeL from east to west. The journey times are staggering- central London direct to ExCeL is just fifteen minutes and Heathrow direct to ExCeL is just 40 minutes. Accessing ExCeL has never been easier and it’s fair to say the Elizabeth Line is a proper, 21st Century integrated transport solution which London has been eagerly awaiting. Visitors will find accessing the show effortlessly easy and I’d thoroughly recommend the experience!

What about the established show features?

All of the event regulars will still be occurring, so ourites like the Attack Testing Zone will again draw substantial crowds. We developed this area with LPCB some years ago and it is still the most viewed and visited feature on the show floor. We’re also bringing back Tech Talks seminar theatre hosting a range of technical and strategic presentations across areas such as the future for access control and the increasing importance and growth of body worn cameras, which is a topic we are seeing a huge amount of interest in at the moment. Our research partner Omdia, will be presenting some key industry trends and we’ll also focus on the opportunities for installers in the professional AV sector and how they can incorporate this specialism into their businesses. The Engineers of Tomorrow competition will also return and we look forward to providing the apprentices with a platform to showcase and celebrate their considerable skills. Our installer partner at SSAIB will again be managing the bar on the showfloor and they will welcome installers to visit and take a refreshment or two.

This year it is 50 years since the first event. Anything special planned?

There aren’t many trade shows that have been running for 50 years so we do see 2023 as a milestone year. The original IFSEC, named ISEC, was held in the Royal Lancaster hotel back in 1973 and from what I hear, it was a collection of alarm manufacturers coming together to sell kit.

Inevitably the idea caught on and has developed into the event we have today. To celebrate we will have a big party at ExCeL on the Tuesday night of the show. It will be a great opportunity for people to come together to acknowledge and celebrate the past, but also look to the future.

What will be the technology trends at the show this year?

I wouldn’t say that there are new trends specifically, rather I think technology is seeing a continuation of its current journey. Anything to do with convergence is becoming a bigger part of the market and integration is a huge part of that evolution. I’d include VSaaS and ACaaS and the use of cloud technologies and also analytics in that development too. At the event, the Converged Security Centre demo area does a great job explaining this picture because it’s one of those features that helps to tell the story of how everything can work in harmony. This year’s Converged Security Centre partner will be Advancis and they’ll be collaborating with several vendor partners such as Nedap, Eagle Eye Networks, Network Optix and Harper Chalice to showcase the benefits of open, integrated security management platforms. Visitors will have an opportunity to see, hear and experience the technology in real time and meet with the experts behind the technology. A point to remember too, is that we are very closely associated with our sister events especially Firex but also The Facilities Show, which means that we can provide a lot of information for the FM market. We expect a lot of crossover with that show as well as Safety and Health Expo which can offer installers advice with other issues such as working at height and PPE etc..

Is there anything we will see less of at the show?

I don’t think there’s anything we will necessarily see less of, but I do expect exhibitors to be more creative in the way that they approach the event. I think we have all learned that exhibitors screwing a load of cameras to a stand wall isn’t the most effective way to show what technology is all about. What is more beneficial is to demonstrate the system capabilities, rather than just the hardware. Nowadays, it’s the effectiveness of the whole system, particularly on the integration side, with a demonstration of the potential of the technology that resonates better with visitors rather than just presenting a sea of cameras. We know that sensors, detectors and cameras are now seen as data gathering tools for much more than just security

purposes, so reaching out on the business intelligence side along with issues such as sustainability, building management and the environment will be more apparent this year. I think that from the installers’ point of view, they need to come to the event to understand what their customers are going to ask them about in relation to such applications.

What are you looking forward to seeing the most at IFSEC?

I’m really keen to watch how the distributor network operates within the show. We’ve created little citadels around some major manufacturers with the entire support network around them and I’m hoping that this will change visitor interactions from being just straight, transactional conversations into something more fruitful. I’m also interested in seeing the Tech Talks theatre as well; full of people enjoying a rapid turnaround of 20-minute bite-sized presentations. The party celebrating our 50-year anniversary is going to be fantastic too and will enhance our reputation as being a major social event for the industry as well as an essential show for developing business relationships and promoting innovation. And of course I’m really looking forward to seeing visitors piling out of the shiny new Elizabeth Line trains, fully refreshed and stress free. The new era has arrived!

Paxton rewards installers with new loyalty programme

The Paxton Installer app has been upgraded to include a new rewards programme that will unlock perks and develop new business opportunities for Paxton installers – as well as enabling them to earn great rewards!

The Paxton Installer app has proven to be a worthy addition to the installer’s toolkit; however, the company has taken advantage of the latest app developments to upgrade the application to expand the offering with some notable new benefits.

To find out more about the new programme and its features, PSI caught up with Gareth O’Hara, Paxton’s Chief Sales Officer.

Why change the current Registered Installer Scheme?

The original scheme was quite popular with our U K installers, so we wanted to expand it to our global installer base and bring them the same, and even upgraded, benefits. As app technology and the use of smartphones have developed rapidly, we looked at how the scheme was delivered. This was especially pertinent as Paxton is a company built on the principles of utilising the latest technology, delivering useful security solutions to the market. With the technology we have available to us we now have the opportunity with the new tools available to deliver what will be seen as a simple-to-use, loyalty programme that matches the expectation of our customer base.

How did you develop the new programme?

Three years ago, we launched the Paxton Installer app and, so far, it’s been downloaded by over 25,000 users, achieving a consistent 4.9 out of 5-star rating by its users. This essentially delivered the first phase development of the programme, it validated that the app was deemed useful by installers and therefore could be seen as the right platform, to introduce a loyalty programme as well as the other features that it provides. The next step was developing a programme that appropriately rewards our customers for choosing Paxton over the other brands that are available in the market.

How does the rewards programme work?

We have strived to make it simple - all you need to do is scan the silver barcode on the product. If you forget to scan the code at any point, you can enter the serial number at a later date or utilise the batch registration feature in our Net2 software. Having a barcode on the product makes it simple for installers to collect points and removes any problems associated with where the item was purchased from. This was essential because the aim of the programme is to reward the installers for their decision to use Paxton products and not restrict their buying options.

Other than scanning Paxton products, installers can attend training sessions or complete other activities to earn points. We are huge believers in education and the provision of free training, so when people sign up and come to training, they will get points. Also, if you do a fantastic installation that you want to promote via a case study, and submit it to Paxton, you will get points for that too. So,

the programme is not just about purchasing Paxton products, it is also about development through training and education, putting yourself in the shop window with case studies and being a true partner with us.

So, what can you get for your points?

We offer a wide range of options for customers such as branded merchandise (hoodies, tools, flasks etc) or installers could use their points in exchange for more Paxton products which might provide a commercial advantage in certain situations. Alternatively, customers might want to save up their points for Amazon vouchers. The good thing about the rewards programme is that no matter what size of a company you represent, you can take part. If you are a sole trader you can save up your own points but if you work for a larger business, you can put the app into shared mode, which enables all the people in the company to generate points together.

What is the installer tier system?

There are four tiers that define what level of benefits you can achieve with us. The first level is Paxton Partner and then it goes through Silver, Gold and Platinum as you progress. By building your balance, you get bonus points and the programme opens up more benefits beyond the redeemable rewards that are in the Installer app. An example of a tier achievement

is the option to have exclusive partner literature that have Paxton Partner badges to show your expertise. As you progress through the tiers, there are more perks to enjoy.

The tier system also comes into play with the Find an Installer feature on our website. We are keen to work closely with our installers and not only reward them with a programme for the products they buy, but also help them to develop new business by leveraging the Paxton brand themselves.

The Find an Installer page on our website receives over twenty thousand visits a year from end-users looking to find security installation companies that are proficient with Paxton products. When an end-user enters their location, the system will search within a defined radius for a Paxton proficient installer. The list provided will be based upon location and tier status.

With the new programme and the benefits that come with it, we are opening up the Paxton shop window for all our rewards programme installers with the intention of generating more business opportunities for them as well.

What do current installers on the Paxton Registered Installer Scheme need to do now?

The Registered Installer Scheme has been replaced by the new and improved Paxton Rewards programme. Their current Registered Installer account is closed, and their points are transferred automatically to the new programme.

New installers will need to download the Paxton Installer app and complete the sign-up process to become a rewards partner. They can then scan their first product to begin collecting points.

There will be a two-year period to spend points from the date that they are registered and because we recognise that there could be breaks in between jobs that require our systems, we will send out reminders when the deadline approaches.

If you were a Paxton installer, what would you exchange your points for?

Why apprenticeships work

No one can deny the importance of our colleges and universities and the role they play in helping the UK reach its ambitions for economic success. However, education alone does not solve productivity and economic issues – or even address the very costly sector-wide skills shortage we are facing at present.

The UK is suffering from a severe skills underutilisation, with a growing number of graduates doing jobs previously filled by non-graduates. We are rated highly in terms of tertiary education by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) while we perform behind other nations for productivity and youth employment. Other nations with well-established vocational training routes into employment all rank in the top 10 OECD high-performing nations.

The whole system needs to change – and there’s plenty of data to back this up. But that article is for another day.

Many employers don’t only want people who emerge through purely academic pathways. We move into an era where employers value technical and transferable skills. There are two areas that can turn around the education system and economy: great technical skills – delivered through high-quality vocational education and great transferable skills – problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, and communication – which are core to every industry.

The issue isn’t about a lack of money being spent on education and skills – the money is there, with over £2.7 billion being spent on apprenticeships across the UK, but there’s an imbalance in the split and the flexibilities in which employers can use and spend this apprenticeship funding. With billions of pounds in unspent Levy being handed back to the Government each year.

Apprenticeships offer a win-win for everyone – learners, businesses and the economy. Ninetytwo per cent of apprentices remain at work after they qualify. Apprenticeships help people move directly into high-value jobs and earn a wage, paying taxes and contributing to the economy as they learn. Don’t forget Higher Skills = Higher Wages = Higher Economic Growth.

The same cannot be said of traditional academic courses, which can result in graduates qualifying but with thousands of pounds of debt and no job. Bear in mind that a four-year university graduate course can cost the taxpayer around £32,000 (depending on where you live). In 2021/2022, there were 2.86 million full-time university students in the UK, but there were a reported 600,000 fewer people in work, and around 210,000 of these were SSV’s, Skills Shortage Vacancies, which is more than double the figure from 8 years previous. This shortage in a high skilled workforce is reported to cost the UK £120 billion by 2030.

One solution? Allow additional flexibilities of the apprenticeship funding to allow employers to utilise the fund to pay bursary for unemployed placement learners, wages for apprentices, and of course, tooling, PPE and additional upskilling courses. Instead of employers handing back billions in unspent Levy funding, we will see a rise in apprentices, employer spending and economic growth.

Second solution? Limit the enrolments in fulltime higher education programmes so that those that would typically enrol at University are forced to look at earn-while-you-learn options, like apprenticeships, as valid career choices.

What is the best thing about working in this industry?

What would be a typical project for you?

Typical projects for us include systems incorporating fire alarms, extinguishers, access control, intruder alarms, CCTV, nurse call, refuge and warden call systems across a wide variety of sites, these can range from simple domestic installs, high value individuals, infrastructure sites, iconic heritage buildings, school, universities, commercial and industrial.

We would normally see out the whole project from design through to installation and commissioning and then look after the sites with a full Service and Maintenance contract. Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers?

As a business we operate with a product por tfolio which contains two or three different manufacturers for all disciplines whose products we have tried, tested and evaluated thoroughly to ensure they are the right fit for the works we carry out.

We always like to keep on the forefront of technology in our industry and are always keeping on top of new products released to see if they are something that could improve our offering to our end users. By sticking to a smaller number of products we believe we are able to give our customers the best service possible and it enables us to train the engineers to the highest standard on each product which in turn delivers first class customer service.

For me it is currently the enhancement in technology that has been happening in the industry recently, IoT is a big change for an industry that in the past hasn’t really moved on as quickly as other industries. IoT is now enabling so much more to be achieved with fire and security systems and helping them to integrate with one another, further enhancing their capabilities which in turn increases the offering to the client or end user and lets them have all the information and control in one place which is a big request for a number of our larger contracts.

We are also lucky enough to work closely with manufacturers helping them beta test new equipment, so we get to see what is coming to the market early which often gets the sales department excited, just as long as they don’t sell the product before its released (this has happened).

Is third party certification beneficial?

Yes I believe it still is as beneficial now as it has always been, with our accreditations we can prove that as a business we are working within the guidelines of the industry, it shows that not only our installations, service and maintenance work is carried out to the highest level but also that our management systems, training and health and safety is the best it can be, it ensures end users that we are using the right products for the right reasons and they can be safe in mind that their systems that are designed to protect them are doing just that.

Auditing ensures we are fulfilling our commitment to our customers and carrying out the work in the way expected when they signed up with us, when customers’ lives and property are at risk they want to know that the company they have chosen takes it as seriously as they

do and when they choose a accredited company they know they are getting exactly that.

I must admit we have seen in recent years less domestic customers requiring NSI or SSAIB for their intruder alarms with some insurance companies not seeming to worry if an alarm is fitted or not which is a little worrying as this opens the door to unqualified engineers/ companies making security recommendations, customers also need to be mindful that not all companies that claim NSI accreditation have it and we always recommend end users to carry out research before choosing a company to install their system, there are plenty of really good honest companies out there that will ensure their home security is to the highest standard possible and these companies will be accredited.

Do you think there is an engineer skills shor tage? Any trouble recruiting?

Yes,Yes undoubtable so, our industry seems to be going through a rough patch at present when trying to recruit new engineers, its not always the fact that no one responds to job adverts it is more the fact that many applicants are outside the industry looking to get in, which isn’t a bad thing, but when companies need skilled engineers to hit the ground running it is a big struggle at the moment to get the right people through the door.

As a business we have for many years supported the apprenticeship scheme and work closely with our local colleges to offer young people the opportunity to get into our great industry and because of this we have ended up with several really good engineers, some of whom ended up in management roles.

Recently we have also started a new process taking advantage of the excellent courses offered by Tavcom where we have opened up Trainee Service engineer roles to anyone from any background and skill set, along with onsite training with our experienced engineers, in house/manufacturer training and the intensive Tavcom training courses we are working towards adding to our service team in this rather intuitive way and currently have three trainees working their way through the training and we are now on the look out for a fourth, we have also taken on a Technical Support apprentice from outside the industry and with

training from the local college and our own in house team and manufacturers we will have further support for not only our customers but also other staff members.

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems?

Some of the time customers expect their old equipment to be able to do the things new products can do without changing them, with the introduction of technology like HD over coax we can now achieve things that could never be done before but sometimes equipment that is 30+ years old just needs to be replaced with new modern tech.

What is the security industry’s biggest myth?

Currently it is the belief from some end users that a system they can buy off the internet will do the job just as well at a fraction of the cost. When you involve a fire and security company you are not just getting the equipment, you are getting years of experience to help design and install a system that will truly protect the things you love - and people who have been unfortunate enough to be affected by a burglary or fire I believe would agree.

What impact has smart/home automation had on your business?

Many domestic customers get very excited about the boom in smar t/ home automation and everyone wants to know ‘does an app come with that?’ With the manufacturers we use, app connectivity has come on leaps and bounds in recent years enabling customers to have more control of their fire and security products than ever before. We make good use of Texecom’s Cloud which enables us to remotely support customers many of which are over the moon when something can be fixed without them having to wait for engineer attendance. We also work very closely with Ajax as one of our security offerings and with their products we can give the customer remote control not only over their security systems but also over their water valves, light switches, power sockets and basically anything they want if designed right and all of a sudden smart home automation that was once a thing for the rich has been opened up to the masses.

What would make your job easier?

I think the ability to know what is going to come in at the star t of the day would be good. Being in a reactive industry means my day can go from quiet and peaceful to all out chaos very quickly but with a good team at Wessex (office and field based) issues are quickly solved and rectified and all can be peaceful again.

If this happened in all situations it would make everyone’s job a little easier. I also think that good planning is so important for everyone, we are in a service industry and quite often have to react to situations and we all accept this, however there are many areas where better planning would improve everyone’s work lives and reduce stress.

What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product?

Products that can fix themselves would be good - if this is too far then maybe we will just go with systems that diagnose their fault and sends all the information into the team so engineers know exactly what they will be up against when turning up on site.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

Probably the same advice I give my children now; work hard and you can achieve anything you want in life, but don’t forget to play hard too.

Will England ever win the World Cup again?

I would love to see them do it in my lifetime, we seem to be getting closer so you never know one day they may just go all the way.

If you won £25K what would you do with it?

I think I would take the family on a long, extended holiday of a lifetime so we can all chill out, put our feet up and have a well-deserved rest.

The Hikvision Security Certification Programme (HCSP and HCSA certification) revolves around Hikvision products and solutions, covering system configuration, operation, troubleshooting, and more. The programme is open to security professionals who need to deploy Hikvision systems and look for ways to prove their skill and expertise in the security industry.

Once the programme is completed, the trainee will be qualified as a Hikvision Certified Security Associate or Hikvision Certified Security Professional.

Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°.

Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this. Score: 8/10

The 3xLogic VX-VT-56 is an IP66 bullet style external thermal camera with a 56° horizontal field of view. It has motion detection including video content analysis and temperature alarm capabilities built in.

Review: A very compact thermal bullet camera that is straightforward to install and set up. t is capable of detecting scene intrusion and creating alarms regardless of light levels and weather conditions. A variety of specialist analytics is included. Score: 8/10

This IP67, 8MP bullet camera is from the Hikvision ColorVu range. It is designed for 24-hour colour imagery with warm-white visible LED illumination support for zero light scenes. A wide 2.8mm lens version is standard with 4mm and 6mm options.

Review: A very good all-round performance from this compact dome camera. Excellent colour image quality in very low light levels and flexible detection and analytic capabilities.

Oncam – C-12 Indoor

This internal 360° view camera designed for ceiling or wall mounting, is based on a 12MP sensor and provides a fisheye image with a wide range of configuration options.

Review: A very powerful compact fisheye view camera compatible with a wide range of video management systems with simplicity of installation and good support documentation. Score: 8.5/10

Dahua – TiOC 2.0

The DH-IPC-HDW3549H-AS-PV-S3 is a 5MP full-colour fixed-focal eyeball WizSense network camera. It is the latest in the company’s TiOC (three- in-one camera) line which integrates 24/7 full-colour monitoring, active deterrence and AI into one solution.

Review: A very capable Eyeball style dome that has a wide range of features to help detect and deter intruders, with extensive cyber security settings. When used with the Dahua Smart NVR, the camera supports intelligent search capabilities. Score: 8.5/10

Wisenet – PNM-C7083RVD

The PNM-C7083RVD multi-directional camera is a dual dome device that provides two 2MP views that can be individually set to suit locations while requiring only one network lead. The cameras provide AI object classification analytics and low light operation. They are IP66 & NEMA4X environmentally rated with an IK10 impact protection rating.

Review: An impressive and very flexible dual camera unit that is easy to install, configure and maintain. Score: 9/10

Hikvision – AX Pro

The AX Pro can be purchased as a kit or individual components. The reviewed system was a DS-PWA96-Kit1-WE kit with the seven parts as listed. It is a wireless Grade 2 alarm system that can be used stand-alone or integrated into a management system. Additional modules are available to link to home automation products and systems. The DS-PWA96-M-WE panel supports up to 32 areas and 96 zones.

Review: A compact wireless alarm system with extended battery duration and flexible remote management. The product is well suited to central monitoring with a range of protocols supported. A reasonably wide and increasing range of detector types with scope for integration with home-automation systems. Score: 8.5/10

Pyronix – MCEXTERNAL-WE

This tamperproof and weatherproof contact extends perimeter protection applications to securing sheds, garages, gates etc, with remote voice push notification alerts via the smart device apps, HomeControl2.0 and ProControl+. Featuring an IP66 rating, this discreet and versatile Grade 2 device is described as easy to fit and calibrate.

Review: The product is constructed very well. The casing is made of a hard polycarbonate with a deep grey (anthracite) finish which makes the door contact look great. The overall performance of the product did not disappoint during testing as it managed to maintain a high signal strength at all times as well as being very responsive. Score: 8.5/10

Ajax – MotionCam Outdoor

The Ajax MotionCam Outdoor is an IP 55 rated combined external PIR sensor with inbuilt capture camera for use with the latest Ajax Hubs that support visual verification. The detector has settings for the image resolution and number of pictures sent on alarm. After dark the unit has two high-intensity infrared LEDs to provide illumination for the camera’s monochrome mode.

Review: A very simple to install and manage, extended battery life external PIR detector for Ajax based Hub 2 systems, with the advantage of visual verification. Score: 9/10

Eaton – i-on10 KP

The i-on Compact Security System is a Grade 2 wired intrusion detection panel with 10 zones and up to 10 users and 4 keypads. It is promoted as being suitable for simple, entry-level burglar alarm systems to protect homes and small commercial installations.

Review: A straightforward and engineer friendly grade 2 wired alarm system with a wide range of configuration options and simplicity of installation. Good documentation is supplied with the product. Score: 9/10

CSL – MiniAir 2

MiniAir 2 is a single-path signalling solution that utilises a 4G/LTE-M path to signal an alarm from a protected premises to an ARC. It comes with a standby SIM as a backup to safeguard the system, if the active SIM fails.

Review: The product overall is great. It is a perfect solution to the PSTN switch over/off as it means that existing systems that rely solely on PSTN signalling can continue to do so without the expense of upgrading the customers control equipment. Score: 9/10

Videoloft – Cloud Adapter 8

The Videoloft Cloud Adapter 8 is an eight channel bridging device which equips new and legacy video surveillance systems with Videoloft’s offsite cloud video solution.

Review: It is a very cost effective solution for those looking to update existing systems, upgrade the overall storage solution, or wanting to connect independent cameras to a recording and viewing platform without the need for a recorder or controller. Score: 8.5/10

Wisenet – TID-600R

The Wisenet TID-600R is a compact IP65, IK08 intercom unit featuring a 1/2.8” 2MP camera with a very wide viewing angle and infrared support up to 5 metres. It supports SIP 2.0 connection, has a touchless call option, edge storage and ONVIF compliance. It measures 165(h) x 49(w) x 48(d) cm with a weight of 490g.

Review: This is an impressive SIP 2.0 intercom unit that can be used in a wide range of situations especially in healthcare, where the touch-free method to initiate a call reduces infection risks. The HD camera and its event recording options can provide excellent evidential images. Score: 9/10

Networked access control system for boarding school

Christ’s Hospital School first opened its doors to 380 pupils in November 1552, at that time located in Newgate Street, London. In 1902 a new site was acquired in Horsham, where the school is now located, having been deconstructed and rebuilt from the London site.

In 2022 the school needed to replace its security system with a new solution that would be simple to manage and maintain the security of the site, staff, and pupils. Vistec Systems, an integrated security systems provider based in Crawley, West Sussex was chosen by David Kennedy, Housekeeping and Security Manager at Christ’s Hospital to carry out the contract.

The school currently has around 900 students, over 95% of which board. With 18 boarding houses on site, all requiring different access permissions, as well as the school buildings, dining hall, and other common areas. It was imperative that the school’s new security system was able to manage a huge number of doors and users, whilst still providing a simple, user-friendly experience.

James Brookes, Operations Manager at Vistec, said: “I’ve been working with Paxton systems for over 12 years, and as soon as I heard the requirements for Christ’s Hospital, I knew that Net2 would be the right solution.”

Net2 is a networked access control solution, designed to make the management of any site straightforward. It moves beyond the basics of controlling the flow of people around a building, offering benefits such as building control and system integration, and it is easily scalable.

James continues: “There were a few challenges to contend with for this installation, including the need to use existing cabling, limited space for hardware storage, and most difficult… time! We needed to install over 280 readers and all the supporting Net2 plus access control units in only six weeks whilst the students were on their summer holidays. Thanks to the ease of the Net2 system to install, and the occasional help from Paxton’s Technical Support team, we were able to deliver.”

Christ’s Hospital’s new security system provides simple read in/read out access on all doors, helping to maintain the security of the site and its staff and students. As every user needs to present their access token to get in and out of a building, the Net2 software can provide reporting on how many people are on-site, in any given building, and pinpoint the location of specific users in an emergency.

The school also has an alert system to ensure the students’ safety; the security team will get notification if students leave their dorms out of hours. After a set time, should a student present their Net2 token to a reader to exit the building, an alert will be flagged in the system and the security team will know who is trying to leave the site (and from which building they’ll be trying to exit).

To further support the school’s requirements, several keypad readers have also been installed on the external doors of relevant buildings, to allow access and egress to temporary students who board over the Easter and Summer holidays. Students will be issued PINs instead of tokens, which may otherwise be lost or not returned.

James from Vistec adds: “To overcome the challenge of the limited space, we used the Net2 plus 1 door controller in the PCB-only format and installed several of them in a single Haydon PSU cabinet to minimise the amount of wall space required for the installation.”

The Net2 system has been in use since September 2022, and the school report very few teething problems. There are now plans to further extend the system to secure all the internal doors on the higher floors of the boarding houses.

Fire system upgrade for spiritual retreat

C-TEC’s CAST XFP fire system has been installed at a spiritual retreat in Llangollen, North Wales.

Set in acres of woodland and overlooking the Ceiriog Valley, Tan-Y-Garth Hall is a Grade II listed house built in 1915. Owned by the International Hermeneutic Society, it provides a spiritual haven for people interested in yoga, meditation, art, music and science.

The Society’s plans to additionally utilise the building as a hotel meant the existing manual fire alarm system had to be replaced to comply with the relevant regulations. Allied Fire Alarms & Escapes specified an L1 category fire alarm system featuring an XFP CAST panel connected to an array of heat, smoke and multi-sensor devices. The system is designed to deliver the earliest possible warning should a fire occur at the 17-bedroom hall.

The Centre for Contemporary Art based in Ujazdowski Castle is a space that uses art to help visitors reflect on the world. The space, which is located in Warsaw, Poland, hosts events, exhibitions, a cinema, a bookshop, a library, and an art residency programme.

The Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle, needed a system that was flexible to the different needs of the many spaces in the museum, and that worked with the castle’s 13thcentury aesthetic. The team decided to invest in IP cameras to deliver video and audio analytics to protect people, assets, and artwork.

Wisenet P and X series AI cameras were chosen due to their built-in deep learning analytics, along with the intuitive and easy-to-use Wisenet WAVE video management system (VMS) and WAVE Video Wall (to display critical areas simultaneously).

Video analytics also includes line crossing detection and intrusion, which automatically trigger alerts to the control room.

Replacing analogue cameras on each of the car park’s poles, the Redvision cameras were required to be connected at the base of each pole for video and data transmission back to the onsite control room, utilising the site’s integrated fibre cable network. During the first upgrade phase, these were accompanied with a bespokemade bracket containing a fibre optic converter, power supply for camera and lights, plus another power supply for the splitter. “This was a feasible solution at the time but we were struggling to package the disparate technology all-together satisfactorily in the confines of the base of each pole,” says Kevin. “Looking to source a better long-term solution, we came across barox, who supply the switch approved for use to provide PoE Mode B power to Redvision cameras.”

The Mall comprises 130 stores across two levels and uutside, the complex includes free parking for 7,000 vehicles, protected by a network of CCTV cameras that provide shoppers with both visual security and safety while they shop and dine.

Managing the switch to IP

The programme to migrate all of the UK’s phone lines and channels to All-IP is now in full swing with a deadline of completing the switchover by December 2025. Security installers need to act to ensure connectivity

The nationwide move to IP will affect not only voice calls but also lines of communication such as the link between alarm systems and the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). In most cases, in order for the panel to continue to be connected after switchover an installer will need to fit a device to the unit which, given the number of jobs this represents and the cost of fuel at the moment, is not going to be a simple and cost effective procedure. However there is another option.
