EDITORIAL
Curious claims
When situations such as the Covid-19 crisis are used for marketing purposes it can feel a little uncomfortable - what’s worse is when the claims don’t even stack up e have received many press releases since we first heard of coronavirus, all using that particular theme as a method to sell thermal cameras (some even calling them Covid-19 detecting cameras) that I felt it was perhaps a trend we should address. You may think it’s “fair game” to use this topic for marketing or you might feel a little uncomfortable with it, but either way you would at least hope that the tech claims are valid. Such claims that a system can ‘avoid infected people entering’ a building prompted Richard Lambert of Evolution to get in touch to report they will not be installing certain thermal imaging technology that claims ‘fever detection’ capabilities. “We have investigated many of the claims, some of which are fanciful to the point of being dangerous,” Richard says. “And even supposing such systems did work, they can still only give an ‘indication’ of fever and that would then need to be validated. Are we seriously suggesting that every business has medically trained personnel on hand to test every employee or visitor who seems to have a temperature? “Without proper consultation, a survey of location and in many cases a redesign of entrances and operations at those entrances, these thermal cameras will be little more than an expensive token gesture.” The thermal imaging technology purports to work in a number of ways: one is by measuring the temperature of the inner canthus (the corner of the eye) while another is that it measures the temperature of a person’s forehead as they pass by. Richard says that neither approach is practical nor accurate: “It takes up to five seconds to record the temperature of the inner eye and that’s assuming the individual stands still,” he says. “But perhaps more concerning is the system’s accuracy. “Most have variances, even in perfect conditions, of +/- 0.3 degrees Centigrade at best. Such a variance can put you ‘in’ the fever zone or preclude you from it. And fever is only a possible sign of COVID-19, not the principal determinant, which means many without the virus would still have to be stopped and tested. This isn’t practical in every customer’s case.” Richard says he is disappointed to see certain manufacturers exploiting the current crisis: “Buyers need to be aware of both the limitations of the technology and the challenges of ‘what happens next’ should a test prove ‘positive.’ Thermal imaging and other security system technology do have a role to play but manufacturers and their agents need to be honest about what their technology can really achieve and the operational issues installing such technology will bring.” We wholeheartedly agree. Stay healthy.

ECHO suspends alarm service launch until July 2020 ECHO has suspended the launch of the automated alarm signalling service until July 2020. In light of the escalating COVID?19 pandemic, ECHO has taken the decision following full consultation with the NPCC to delay the launch of its new industry backed service until July 2020. A statement released on behalf of the ECHO Directors said this is a regrettable but

alone, whether in populated areas, indoors within complex facilities or remotely. A key part of its service is live 24/7 monitoring and wireless gas detection, helping teams working in hazardous environments by responding to emergencies in real-time and managing efficient evacuations. Under this new partnership, Stanley Security will take over the role of safety monitoring services for Blackline in the UK, Netherlands and Belgium this month, with a further seven countries in Europe throughout 2020 and will additionally provide backup support for Blackline’s Calgary-based Safety Operations Center, increasing protection for Blackline’s North American customers. To ensure the transition of monitoring and response services, Stanley Security has established a continuous training programme for employees across Europe. The training ensures operatives have in-depth knowledge of Blackline’s emergency response protocols, products and features, and are kept up to date at all times.
wholly appropriate step that accommodates the needs of all interested parties at the present time. There is great interest in the benefits ECHO will bring to the partnership between the Police and the alarms industry, yet delaying the “go live” until the Covid?19 pandemic is at least stabilised is eminently in the best interest of all parties. The aim of ECHO is to deliver a centralised, fully automated electronic call handling service to reduce the pressure on the emergency services and ARCs by reducing their call handling times and errors that can occur from a manual response handling. Following discussions between the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) and the private security industry that took place in 2015, the decision to implement electronic transfer was agreed. As a result, the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) set the date of 2020 for all ARCs to be operating on an electronic platform. Pilot schemes have proved that ECHO will improve efficiencies.

BSIA encourages ARC number passing as soon as possible to ensure service The BSIA is encouraging Alarm Receiving Centres to provide their incoming telephone numbers (the number the alarm device dials) as soon as possible to BT Consumer to ensure devices are not left without service. BT announced their intention to move all voice communications to IP back in 2017 with a proposed end target of 2025. This means moving telephony services to an all IP network, similar to the UK switch to digital TV. Roll out changes mean existing alarm devices will be affected before the 2025 deadline. Some key points to note on providing the incoming telephone numbers are: BT will look for these numbers in their calls records to identify the customers who have dialled them in the last 12 months and will put a marker in their account. (It’s reasonable to assume that any calls to this number would be from a device of some sort) They won’t note the supplier, type of service or make/model of any special services device on those customers’ lines, just the fact that it’s likely there’s a special services device on that line It will allow BT to take extra care with those customers at the time of upgrading them onto digital voice services No numbers or customer information will not be shared with anybody else and BT Consumer will put in place a NonDisclosure Agreement if required. David Wilkinson, Director of Technical Services, BSIA said: “The deadline for the All IP switchover will reach us sooner than we think and with the recent announcement from BT Consumer launching their new digital service, we will start to see the impact of the transition where end-users buy the service. We will continue to work with key stakeholders and encourage our industry members and the wider security community to prepare for this digital evolution across the UK telephone network.” Sodhi Dhillon, who heads up the engagement team for BT said, “It’s really important that we get the message of the switchover out to the industry as quickly and as widely as possible. It’s a massive programme of change, bigger than the switch over from analogue TV to digital TV, and we want to make sure nobody is left vulnerable when the analogue systems stop working”.

This month Simon Banks talks to Carl Meason, Managing Director at NSI Gold Accredited ARC, Fenix Monitoring, providers of monitoring services for Intruder, Fire, CCTV, Access Control and Lone Worker applications. What was your main area of focus when you launched Fenix? From our inception, we asked ourselves: what kind of business do we want to be? We knew we wanted to offer an alternative, but we didn’t want to be different for the sake of being different! We identified some of the main issues Installers faced and the ‘pinch points’ that could be improved. We created an agile management team, who are always open to conversations, allowing us to develop an industry niche in integrating new equipment and developing bespoke monitoring services. We like to consider ourselves a nursery for new ideas! Our management team have extensive knowledge and experience of installation and compliance processes. They appreciate how heavily regulated (rightly so) our industry is. However, the red tape, standards and approval processes can be very time consuming for Installers, eating into their time when they could be making money. We wanted to offer more flexibility when issues arise, enabling Installers to get their service back up and running, and deal with the other issues (such as pricing) afterwards. As we evolve, these issues will continue to appear, and we will keep moulding our business to deal with them.
What does the future look like for ARCs? I believe it will be more focused on Alarm Management and not just Monitoring. We believe a partnership must exist across the entire supply chain, offering opportunities for open discussions for us all to learn and develop systems that work for everyone. If the end-user understands their system, they can educate their people to see issues and report them before anything goes wrong. Conversely, the Monitoring company can then feed information back down the chain to allow the Installer to perfect the set-up. Proactive partnerships work for the benefit of the entire value chain. Things can sometimes go wrong and inevitably in our industry they will with our alwayson services. We try and minimise these occurrences, with due diligence beforehand. This provides our customers with confidence in us, knowing that we will resolve this for the next time. We prefer to demonstrate our passion and desire to improve, rather than claim to be perfect! New people who join our business must demonstrate these qualities and this has helped us to build a fantastic team. It has been important for us to build our business through trust. The desire for an aligned result has allowed us to cement solid partnerships with honesty and transparency of service.
How important are the latest technologies in terms of providing a better service to Installers and their customers? We are always looking to our supply partners for ways we can improve the service for the rest of the chain, whether this is with increased reliability or reducing false alarms. One example of this is the Smart Reporting feature available with the new DualCom Pro range from CSL. This “holds” a single path failure if it happens when the premises are closed and will only report this once it opens or if an alarm signal is sent. This avoids the unnecessary phone calls we are forced to make during the night to an end-user, to tell them about something they cannot action. This undoubtedly will improve the service we offer. In addition to this, we are excited about the opportunities in the Fire Monitoring market. Today, only 5% of Fire systems are monitored and we believe this will drastically change when EN54 signalling products like DigiAir Pro Fire are available to the market. Using Digital Communicators for fire is no longer acceptable, especially when a better alternative exists! It doesn’t cost much more to add Fire signalling to a system and we always encourage Installers to consider it.
YOU SAID IT! “First Class Support. Always willing to go the extra mile and have some very skilled technical people who are always willing to help in any situation. Couldn’t recommend any more highly. Great reliable equipment with straight forward installation” Francisco Branco (Eagle Security Solutions Ltd) – LinkedIn post – 7th February Tweet us @CSLGroupLtd

he Zyxel GS1350-6HP is a “Smart Managed Switch for Surveillance” with hardware and software designed specifically for surveillance camera use. This 6-port version has five PoE enabled ports and one SFP socket. All ports support up to 1Gb data rate with a 12Gb/s switching capacity and a 60-Watt PoE budget. 8, 16 and 24 port versions are available, each with 2 SFP sockets and PoE power of 130W, 250W and 375W respectively.
T
Getting started
The real benefits of this switch become clear when you connect and configure it using a web browser 12
The supplied Quick Start Guide provides basic connection details and suggests downloading a network utility called ZON for ease of network discovery and initial access to the device. A default IP address of 192.168.1.1 is set but DHCP is enabled so the address should not clash if connected to an existing network using this subnet. The supplied 55 volt 1.3 Amp power supply feeds the unit, on the front are the five main RJ45 ports and an SFP socket for an optional wired or fibre uplink module. It is strongly advised to connect a valid ground cable to the M4 ground screw on the rear of the unit before connecting network cables. Once powered, simply plugging network devices in will allow immediate communication. The Zyxel website has a number of additional documents that users should download; these include, along with the usual Data Sheet and 2page Quick Start Guide, an 83-page Handbook and a more detailed 343-page User’s Guide. The handbook describes the majority of functions
Zyxel - GS1350-6HP
within the switch and has helpful test methods included, so should provide much of the information required, the User’s Guide gives greater details.
Operation The real benefits of this switch become clear when you connect and configure it using a web browser. The initial page requests the Administrator username and password. The default password is a simple 4 digit code and changing is not forced but reminders are given at every login if it is not altered. As this device is aimed at the security market it would perhaps be advisable to enforce a change to a “Hard” password at first use. Along the top right of the browser window are lined up quick access buttons for Refresh, Save, Status, Wizard, Logout and Help. The Wizard can be used to quickly change the password and SNMP community name and gives access to some basic port protection, VLAN and QoS settings. Unlike security industry products, it is a feature of many managed switches that settings are stored in run-time memory and selecting “Apply” after any configuration changes only saves to volatile storage. It is therefore essential to use the above “Save” button to store these changes into non-volatile memory so they will be recovered after power down and re-start or reboot. This includes basic password and Time & Date settings. One of the key features of this switch range is its ability to maintain camera PoE supply even during switch firmware uploads and re-boot.

TEST
(continued from p12)
A very well featured security industry network switch with specialised surveillance features, that allows a high degree of network security
As long as connected cameras have internal storage and are configured to synchronise recordings when LAN communication is restored there should be no loss of recording. Additionally, the ports can be configured to monitor the connected cameras so that any device loss can be detected. This can be by LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) monitoring or using periodic PING commands from the ports with timing intervals to suit the application. On detection of such a camera signal loss, the port can be automatically power cycled to attempt to re-start the camera. The number of attempts and delay duration are selectable, as is the timing and method of alerting a system administrator to the failure.
Menu options The switch allows the user to use a Basic or Advanced menu set and the menu tree is arranged at the left of the main browser window. The Priority Queue Assignment allows individual ports to have different priority levels from 0 to 7, this allows data such as video, if more critical, to be prioritised if there is network congestion. The queueing method is selectable in the Advanced options as strictly priority or two weighted options, Fair Queueing and Round Robin. The Zyxel Nebula Cloud Management allows remote management of multiple sites with a free software version and a more comprehensive feebased option available. The diagnostic screen allows PING and Traceroute testing and in addition to testing ports, gives cable distance measurements with distance to fault if pairs are open or short circuit.
Performance The switch has a very wide range of configuration options and rules, some of which may be unfamiliar to those without a networking background, however, the help files available through the browser interface along with the comprehensive documentation from the Zyxel website give good explanations of each option. Some of the available features and menu
options may appear less appropriate to a six-port switch but do ensure that this device can be used as part of a very secure elaborate network design and can be used to develop a more secure network strategy. An extended distance mode is available on the ports, this drops the maximum data rate to 10Mb/s but increases the effective range from 100 metres to up to 250 metres depending on cable type. PD (Powered Device) monitoring, which in most security installations would be a camera or access device connection means that there is a continual monitoring of the device being online. This can either be by monitoring LLDP data or using PING commands, with the number of PINGs and repetition time all user selectable. Camera restarting can then be triggered by turning off and then restoring the PoE power to the specific port where the error has occurred. Suitable notifications can then be logged and / or sent to system administrators. RSTP support allows dual path redundancy to be used where more robust network connections are necessary. The various status and information pages provide a large amount of useful diagnostic information. The ability to mirror port information allows for selected data to be copied to a port for analysis of either received, transmitted or both sets of packets. Scheduling is possible using the Time Range option, this is based on named time periods and can be for a specific duration between two dates and times or repeated for times within days of the week. This could be used for example to turn the PoE of a port on only during certain hours of the day. However, it isn’t clear why the date selection goes back to 1970 on the long drop-down date selector scroll bars as the default date at powerup starts at a more sensible 2016.
Conclusion A very well featured security industry network switch with specialised surveillance features, that allows a high degree of network security and remote management when suitably configured.

Range of self-locking emergency escape locks is launched dormakaba has launched the latest generation of its SVP self-locking emergency escape locks. The range is suited for use on emergency exits and escape routes where doors requiring access control can be balanced with safety in an emergency. The SVP range of locks offers a number of different options from mechanical locking with emergency escape function to locks that also feature electronic access control and optional microswitch monitoring functions. The SVP locks ensure security with two-point locking - deadbolt and clawbolt latch - engaged automatically after closure. The emergency escape function means that the door can be opened at any time in the exit direction by simply operating the lever handle or panic bar. The products are certified and CE marked in accordance with both EN 179 and EN 1125 standards for emergency exits, in addition they have been type-tested for conformity to the requirements of EN 14846/EN 12209 and are Certifire approved for use on fire doors. SVP locks are available in different models suitable for over-rebated or flush-closing timber/steel doors and also narrow stile doors. They are flexible in terms of their installation position thanks to the non-handed (universal) trip latch. www.dormakaba.co.uk

CLOUD
Cloud benefits and security
Physical security and the transition to cloud environments is outlined in a new survey. We take a closer look and find out why installers should be adding cloud to their portfolios ccording to Rodrigue Zbinden, CEO of Morphean the cloud is transforming business in every sector, offering benefits of scalability, customisation and device interoperability that were not attainable from traditional legacy systems. “Cloud environments, delivering better security and functionality at lower cost, have become the ideal solution for the management of entire business operations, negating the need for the traditional on-premise services that have proven so costly for companies to manage and maintain,” he said. “The interconnectivity between cloud environments and IoT devices has opened up a whole world of possibility for the physical security sector too, but is not without risk.” The convergence of physical and digital environments has piqued the interest of the modern IT manager, eager to add the physical

security of people, premises and assets to their established remit of protecting software and systems. In effect, the optimal provision of these systems will increasingly require cooperation between the IT and physical security industries that are speaking the same language in order to successfully compete and remain relevant.
Physical security
This is what Morphean found as a result of an independent survey into the attitudes and behaviours of IT decision makers across the UK and Europe. The idea was to gain a better understanding of purchasing intent for evolving security provision in the 2020s. The findings revealed that as many as 84% of IT managers are currently using or considering cloud-based video surveillance (VSaaS) or access control (ACaaS) systems, pointing to an appreciation of the convergence of physical and cyber security and a willingness to embrace these systems when integrated with IT in the cloud. The resulting whitepaper 2019 Landscape Report: Hosted Security adoption in Europe, clearly shows better security, cost benefits

and better functionality to be the most influential factors and the most commonly realised benefits of hosted security solutions. It is apparent that physical security in the cloud has much to offer.
Increasing confidence
Survey results revealed that safer / better security ranked among the main benefits of cloud, a sign that initial security fears around the use of cloud technologies appear to be waning, with a 63% increase compared with the results of a similar survey in the previous year. Considering that half of IT managers reported data security as a priority for improvement in the next twelve months, and that cost effectiveness and greater flexibility are also given as major benefits of cloud by 47% of respondents, you would expect to see a greater proportion of the circa 31-33% (2018-2019) of IT budget being spent on cloud services in the 2020s.
“The traditional physical security industry might need to review its approach to the cloud and make video surveillance and access control “as-a-service” a key part of its offering to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving market”
Further responses revealed that of the 36% of managers who were considering VSaaS and ACaaS, 79% anticipated introducing these services within the next twelve months (31% within six months and 48% within seven to twelve months). Nearly eight in ten said that integration with existing platforms, or emerging technologies, such as AI, would also accelerate adoption.
Optimisation and opportunity
Of note to the physical security industry will be the revelation that 77% of IT managers reported that physical security was not optimised within their organisations, with as many as 20% identifying it as a priority in the coming year. There is a clear demand and appetite for physical security, but the danger is that if physical security providers cannot demonstrate their expertise in relation to cloud systems and technologies, they risk being bypassed in favour of the IT solution providers that IT managers will already be in contact with. Yet there is potential for collaboration. “The joining of physical security vendors who already have proven expertise and an established customer base, together with the IT solution providers who are well-versed in network infrastructure, could result in a compelling offering; a complete solution protecting both physical boundaries and the cybersecurity of systems,” says Rodrigue Zbinden. “But the traditional physical security industry might need to review its approach to the cloud and make video surveillance and access control “as-a-service” a key part of its offering to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving market.” PSI caught up with Martyn Ryder, VP Sales and Marketing at Morphean to discuss the findings of the 2018 and 2019 surveys and to find out why installers should be adding cloud services to their portfolios:
What did you take away from the 2018 and 2019 surveys? We surveyed 1500 IT directors, roughly 500 in the UK, France and Germany and the hypothesis around that was to gather the opinions around cloud how businesses were adopting it and what their thoughts were to using cloud in a physical security perspective. In a lot of the dayto-day activity we do in various countries around Europe we tend to find in the industry that the 20

SMOKE DETECTION
view of the end customer is different in Germany to France and the UK. Actually what we found in the original survey was that opinions were pretty much the same right across all geographies as well - the only real new one we saw was in healthcare in Germany; there was a reticence to use cloud-based solutions from a healthcare perspective in Germany. The key highlights we picked up in the original report included 89 percent of businesses surveyed were already using cloudbased solutions with 75% using email, 54% for customer relationship management (CRM), 49% financial and commercial and on average a third of the IT budget was being spent on cloud-based services. Of all of the people surveyed around 66% said that security was their most important factor when evaluating cloud solutions, so it's still top of people's mind and they do have security concerns about where data is kept, but on the flip side just under 30 percent cited safer and better security options as the reason for moving to the cloud. So while there is some fear in light of the new stories we see about hacking and such there is a big percentage of people using cloud because it just them better overall security of their data. Roughly about 25% of those surveyed had have data security breaches in the past 24 months so we see that the security of data is still a big concern for people when choosing cloud providers. We also asked companies if they're looking to increase their investment in cloud in the years to come and an estimated 47% of firm's internal data could be processing out to the cloud in the next two to five years and just under 80% of businesses expect their spending to increase over the next two years into cloud as well. Of particular interest to PSI readers, we also asked if people would consider putting physical security solutions in the cloud. Around 45% of those surveyed said they definitely would consider it, while 47% said they would possibly consider it and then the remaining percents are not looking at the cloud. This is a big opportunity for businesses and a big opportunity for integrators to address the growing need that customers have.
Around 11% of people said that they don't want to use the cloud, is that purely because they're worried about data security? IT directors fear losing control - they feel that everything is under their control in their own
www.psimagazine.co.uk
“This is a big opportunity for businesses and a big opportunity for integrators to address the growing need that customers have datacentres and they feel better off with that scenario. Sometimes that can be the case, but sometimes not because you are relying on a lot of human interactions (such as logging out of PCs) to make systems secure. We see sort camps when it comes to cloud adoption, those that embrace it and understand it and those that don't trust it. The big concern for those against the cloud concerns security and a lot of highprofile hacking cases in the media scares them about putting their data where they see it as outside of their control.
Did anything in the report surprise you? We operate mainly across Western Europe and when we speak to security integrators the

“Installers need to try to understand their customers' businesses and adapt connected devices as a service that really benefits all parties and bring ROI
feeling we get back is that in certain countries nobody wants to use cloud and they're not interested in it. But what we found in the survey was that opinions are pretty much the same across the board and that was one of the biggest pieces we took from the report. Going into this there was a perception from potential customers who we spoke to that certain markets are not as advanced as others in terms of their thinking and what surprised me most was the consensus of opinion across the three key major countries in Europe. Also I would say that we didn't expect the figure of 89% for those that would definitely or possibly consider moving to the cloud - we didn't expect it to be that high. There are a lot of businesses still on their journey of cloud adoption and maybe they don't fully understand what cloud means what benefits it can bring.
Is the rise in data levels coming from cameras going to affect cloud adoption? That was one of the points we picked out in the original survey, with many companies responding that they saw these systems as very important for creating greater business intelligence. For the security industry there are lots of different applications out there with the primary source being IP cameras that are called into action when something criminal happens, but more businesses are now looking to the analytics world to collect data and find a risk. Transforming that information into a business tool that people can get real benefit from is
really where cloud comes into force because it brings all of that data together.
What are the benefits of cloud for installers/integrators? The primary piece around a lot of cloud providers is to allow connected devices to enable the integrators and installers to provide the "as a service" model. What this allows installers to do is take the cloud platform and add their service elements on top that makes it unique to them but delivers on a customer need - not just going up to customers and asking how many cameras they want and how long do they want to record for. Installers need to try to understand their customers' businesses and adapt connected devices as a service that really benefits all parties and bring ROI. You have a million and one competitors that can stick a camera up but adding cloud-based services will improve your win-rate because not everyone can copy what you're doing. If you deliver on a service level it's very unlikely the customer will move away and if they do try and move away it's not like other companies just down the road can provide the same service level. As these devices are connected a big message we also have is that you can do a lot of remote maintenance and pre-builds and just go on site to install it. So your more skilled engineers can be doing office pre-builds while your less skilled engineers can be out fixing things to walls etc. So it really can improve the cost of delivery, the cost to serve and build on the unique service offering around specialisms that they've got that they can add to this connected platform as well. It might be something simple like an intercom with a receptionist working 8am to 6pm and the security company can suggest that as between 8am - 9am and 5pm-6pm there are not many people coming in so we can manage it during these hours for you and you just have a receptionist working 9am-5pm. We enable installers and integrates to build some service level on top, that they can show some ROIs to their customer and become a trusted security partner not just a supplier of product with a maintenance contract that sees an engineer comes out in the event of a fault.

BUSINESS
How to develop your service business mindset In this article in the series on growing your service business from Jim Rathbone, he looks at the importance of having a service mindset. This is increasingly important as installers strive to mitigate the business impact of COVID 19 in these unprecedented times. e work with a significant number of fire and security installers and it is surprising how little time some business owners invest in growing the maintenance and support service side of their business. Most time and energy is invested in designing, quoting, project managing, installing and getting paid for the installed system. Yet most of the profit is made in the service area. It is vital to develop a service business mindset when the installation activity can be so time consuming. This mindset is easier to develop when you call to mind the many benefits of growing your service sales…
W
1. Increases the value of your company If you’re considering selling your business at some time in the future, the value of the contract base can be the key element in valuing the business for a buyer, with a multiple being applied to the monthly or annual contract value. 2. Provides recurring income stream Wouldn’t it be great to know at the beginning of the year that your overheads are at least covered by your annual service contract income? As a fire and security installer, your annual service contract income can be anything from 50% and above to less than 10% of annual sales. If you are in the latter category then you are constantly dependent on cash flow in winning, completing and getting paid for new installation work. 3. Delivers higher margins Service gross margins can be in excess of 50%. This will depend on your target market, your service pricing, your geographical coverage and your engineer efficiency, but these margins are considerably different to installation projects, especially when the work is tendered or you are working through contractors.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
4. Provides follow-on sales The service contract gives you the opportunity for repeat contact with your customers. There is the reactive call-out income stream and, more importantly, there are the service works that follow from having the service contract: system extensions; systems upgrades; new fire and security disciplines/ services. 5. Repeat contact with customers The repeat contact through preventative maintenance visits and reactive call-outs by the engineer provides the opportunity to build a relationship with your customer over the long term. 6. Improves your cash flow With the higher service margins and the annual service contracts that are usually paid annually or at worst quarterly in advance, this is a tremendous boost to your cash flow. But does it really make that much of a difference? I had the privilege of running a £200m business in the field of automatic doors through the market downturn and severe economic crisis of 2008/9. The business continued to make net profits in excess of 20% because 45% of the revenue related to contracted maintenance income that had been secured systematically following each installation. This was a real cash cow business. So, yes. It does make that much of a difference. Installers who have developed a healthy maintenance contract business are more likely to survive the business shockwaves of COVID-19. Take advantage of this period to develop your plan to grow your service business.
Wouldn’t it be great to know at the beginning of the year that your overheads are at least covered by your annual service contract income?

Meet the installer - Q&A Every month we talk to an NSI approved installer about life in the business. This month we take a look back at what installers said when we asked:
What is the best thing about working in the security industry? Mike Ockelford Colt Security There are two things to be honest. Firstly, every day is different and you're faced with different issues all of the time. Secondly, the diverse customer base we've developed over 34 years is great. It's nice to be in contact with people I've dealt with since the very first day I did my first survey. Clients really want that personal contact and that has always been the way we do business.
David Armstrong Centurion Fire & Security You’ll never be out of work. Also I like that fact that the technology changes and evolves – this is a very innovative industry and I don’t think many people recognise that. It’s also great that we can work with manufacturers to help develop new technologies.
Paul Garry Fire Action The diversity of our clients, their sites and their fire and security needs. I’ve been to some incredibly interesting places in my time in this industry.
Dean Gilbert Ace Security & Electrical I have been in the security industry for 30+ years and I’m still learning. It’s been amazing seeing innovations throughout the years. The dedication does pay off and I have the utmost respect and appreciation for anyone wishing to pursue a career in the fire and security industry.
Max Smith Security Control Systems Without a doubt it is the team at Security Control Systems. Our company heritage is built upon building trust and delivering quality assurance to ultimately provide peace of mind to our customers. We have an exceptionally loyal customer base which is of testament to the team at Security Control Systems.
Sean McPartland Logic Fire & Security Working in both security and fire brings a lot of satisfaction that we are looking out for and taking care of companies’ statutory requirements, something that is often overlooked or put to the back of the agenda. It is not just about providing a service to maintain a fire or security system, it is much more; it is about providing a fully inclusive service, highlighting and advising the customer what their obligations are and the technological advances that are continually available to further increase protection for all their “people and property”.
Bobby Dhunay Tel Cam Security Systems There are many benefits, I love being on the front line, being out all day and customer facing. Being able to use new technology, such as SecureConnect from Eaton is also brilliant. Having said all that, I think the most enjoyable aspect is I’m able to use the problem solving skills that I’ve acquired over my career to in a practical job role, as opposed to being office bound all day – it makes a huge difference!

SECURITY
Security systems buying tips Matt Tengwall of Verint explains how you can choosing the right security camera – and get boardroom buy-in
oday’s world has dramatically changed the concepts of security and technology, as organisations no longer only install surveillance cameras and physical security devices; they require much more than that to stay prepared. Current news stories are evidence of how times are changing — they’re littered with headlines of increased potential threats, ranging from cyber attacks and ransomware to organised crime syndicates. With the risk landscape constantly evolving, a company’s security system needs to be prepared for modern criminals. Today’s enterprise organisations simply can’t afford the consequences of weaknesses or vulnerabilities in a network or safety strategy. Regardless of the market that a business is in, establishing a comprehensive and robust security solution must begin with an assessment of the company’s unique needs, which oftentimes begins with identifying what kind of security camera would work best for the user. Buyers want to partner with system designers and/or consultants that can provide recommendations as they relate to camera selection, but that are also aware that an end user’s board is concerned with finances just as much as security considerations. A designer that can not only build a system but also establish a clear value proposition for key decision makers will be far more successful in gaining and retaining partnerships. With a thorough assessment through the following steps, this task can be accomplished.
T
Consider specific applications
Every vertical market is different and, as such, will have different camera needs. For example, financial institutions are made up of many distinct areas, such as the lobby, teller window, ATM, drive-thru teller, and parking lot. Each of these environments must be monitored at all times given the risk they could present to the safety of the facility. This is not easy to achieve with just one or a few traditional devices. These
www.psimagazine.co.uk
unique utilisations require a solution that is tailored to the particular setting, which, in many cases, can be accomplished directly through the supplier. Over time, manufacturers build up their portfolio to specialise in one or a few vertical markets. With this approach, buyers don’t need to vet the entire market for such specialised solutions, which can be time consuming. Once a supplier is identified, individual products can be examined for specific feature needs. For example, if a bank is located in a large and expansive building with high ceilings, they should consider PTZ or panoramic cameras to reduce costs while simultaneously covering a lot of ground. Or, if the business is located in a cold climate, cameras should be equipped to deal with below-freezing temperatures. It is important to recognise both the application and the environment when suggesting camera types, as well as what market specific suppliers cater to.
Regardless of the market that a business is in, establishing a comprehensive and robust security solution must begin with an assessment of the company’s unique needs
Consider existing systems
One of the most efficient ways to gain situational awareness and provide end users with an overview of their facility is by integrating new systems with existing systems. Video management systems are truly the eyes of an 33

organisation, so it is important for system designers to keep in mind integration capabilities when making camera suggestions to end users. Taking into account existing systems, coupled with the data insight users are hoping to receive, is critical when selecting the right camera for the job in question. While integration to other data sources is important, it is also crucial to make
Taking into account existing systems, coupled with the data insight users are hoping to receive, is critical when selecting the right camera for the job in question considerations based on backward capability. Having a system that can be built upon, rather than ripped and replaced every time an upgrade is needed, will provide both the longevity and scalability end users continue to demand. Security professionals that work with technology and see the risks daily understand that investments with the right application and integration capabilities in mind are worthwhile and a necessity when preparing for the future. But how can the choices of a system designer help end users translate these benefits, so board members and executives feel the same? When making security recommendations, keep key decision makers in mind and be sure the end user is fully aware of the benefits to ensure a sale at the end of the assessment process.
34
Speak their language
While “VMS” and “edge computing platform” are important jargon in a security officer’s dayto-day world, those words don’t mean much to someone whose sole focus is keeping the company on a fiscally sound trajectory. Executives and board members speak in terms of ROI, TCO, cash flow, gross margin, and profit margins, so it’s important that consultants acknowledge these considerations, in addition to security needs, when making recommendations to end users. Security features are important, but it is necessary to keep in mind the main thing that drives business: money. Both worlds intersect at ROSTI, or Return on Security Technology Investment: • Reduce expense results • Optimise performance • Standardise products or services • Timeline for results • Improve process, progress, and steps toward goals
It’s more than just security
Board members understand that data is important, but they might not know that security technology can provide key information for business operations as well. With the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), today’s technology solutions can accomplish more than simply monitoring assets. Data collected through the IoT from video cameras, sensors, and systems can provide extremely valuable insight and business intelligence. Consultants should make relevant recommendations that position the camera as a data point to show the capabilities of the offering, while simultaneously showing how that data goes above and beyond typical surveillance use cases. Whether a financial institution, a retail store, or a healthcare environment, identifying the right surveillance camera to ensure security is only half the battle. The evolution of technology, fraud mitigation, and overall security structure has propelled security leaders to take a new approach to “selling” the investment. It is important for consultants to consider both security and the audience they are catering to when it comes to making recommendations that will pay off in both the short and long term.

Open Door Selecting a Shock Sensor
Shock sensors represent a valuable tool in intrusion detection systems. Most alarmbased solutions can be split into two parts: protection of the interior of sites and protection of the perimeter. While many consider the perimeter as the very border of a protected space, such as a fence or gate, the perimeter of buildings is a vital consideration in dealing with detection. Detecting intrusion in the interior of a building has traditionally been the preferred route for the security industry, predominantly because of standards and regulations. The interior of a building is usually a controlled environment: a sterile zone when the alarm system is set. No motion is expected, and doors and windows should not open. Traditionally the interior of a space is protected by PIRs, dual tech space detectors, some beam-based units and contacts. It should be remembered that while contacts are commonly used to detect unauthorised opening of external doors and windows, in order to trigger an alarm, the intruder must open the door or window. While this does deliver an early alarm, often before they’ve gained entry to the premises, it can often result in damage being caused, which equates to a cost for the end user. To meet the demand for compliant and accurate shock sensors, Texecom is introducing the new Impaq S Series devices. Designed to take perimeter protection to the next level, the detectors incorporate VIBER accelerometer technology to offer standards-compliant intruder detection without compromise. The shock sensors are designed to detect and analyse a forcible shock and provide early warning of attempted intrusions before a break-in occurs, ensuring the safety of people and property. Catch performance is high, and the adjustable sensitivity makes the device ideal for a range of applications. Find out more: www.texe.com/uk/products/range/perimeter-detectors/
Inner Range success at Intersec 2020 event is outlined
Inner Range’s regional sales manager for the Middle East and Africa, Issam Alhamdan, tells us about his Intersec 2020 experience. Middle East expansion - It’s an exciting time for Inner Range in the Middle East. I joined the access control manufacturer last summer as its first dedicated sales manager for the region and we hope to expand even further soon. We have recently completed a number of projects in the new capital of Egypt as well as working with a large critical national infrastructure organisation to provide secure access control for multiple sites. Biggest regional security event - Intersec is the biggest security exhibition in the region, so the 2020 event in Dubai was a great opportunity to meet existing and potential customers and showcase what our products can do. The official figures show we were one of more than 1,000 exhibitors at Intersec 2020 hailing from more than 56 countries, and that there were more than 33,500 industry visitors. It was certainly a very well-attended event. Product showcase - We showed delegates our Entry-level access control system, Inception, as well as our Enterprise model, Integriti. Both products allow you to manage access control and intruder detection via one single platform. We provided demonstrations of both products and the general feedback was that people were impressed by the power of Inner Range systems. Delegates were keen to get into the technical details too and we answered lots of questions about our product capabilities and integration methods. Visit: www.innerrange.co.uk

IDIS Video Tech deployed at top Birmingham secondary school
One of Birmingham’s top secondary schools has switched to IDIS video technology in a drive to improve security, safety and standards of personal behaviour. The school’s old CCTV system was proving difficult to use, with poor quality recordings that were hard to search through. IDIS technology was chosen to replace it, and the priority for the upgrade was not just price, but service and performance. The new solution comprises close to 110 cameras. IDIS’s DC-D4213WRX vandal resistant full-HD IR domes provide coverage for most of the school’s internal areas and more than 70 were installed. They capture pin-sharp images in all lighting conditions, handling rapid variations in brightness and shade thanks to their true wide dynamic range (WDR), and infra-red performance giving an impressive 30 metres range at night. The 27 IDIS DC-E3212WRX vandal resistant bullet cameras, which were installed to cover entrances and external areas, also deliver powerful IR night vision, with low light enhancer technology. The security of home working
Ben Fielding from Cybersecurity Professionals looks at the security issues surrounding staff working from home and how to help keep technology free from cyber threats yber security is currently one of the biggest threats to businesses of all sizes. Cyber crime is one of the most prevalent and fastest-growing crime categories in the West and, as more businesses digitise further, more threats manifest themselves for security professionals to deal with. With major data breaches filling the headlines regularly, it has never been more apparent that all businesses need to employ exhaustive cyber security practices or risk the integrity of their networks and the private data of their clients and workers. On top of the expanding world of connectivity that security staff must battle with, we are now facing one of society’s biggest existential threats in COVID-19, which has caused security staff particular difficulty. As hundreds of workers have started to work from home for the

first time - many on personal devices - the overall risk surface of many businesses has instantly and dramatically expanded. To ensure that security systems remain secure and to guarantee protection across the sprawl of each business, security staff will need to be aware of the key challenges and issues; some essential ways of dealing with the changes; and where the largest threats lie.
Issues that need dealing with
As the UK government has enforced the closure of non-essential workplaces and urged as many people as possible to work from home, the limits of control cyber security staff have over their systems are being tested. The two key issues with home workers will be insecure home networks offering a chance for cyber criminals to access sensitive information and insecure home devices which are open to a wealth of cyber malevolence.
90% of cyber crimes are the result of human interaction, so any security framework that doesn’t prioritise training and awareness of all employees can only go so far 39

The current circumstances should be treated as an emergency pilot and security installers should make clear instructions for setting up and following the process
Security engineers, analysts and administrators will need to be aware of what access needs workers will have while working from home and what limitations they’ll encounter while trying to ensure everyone can access the necessary software. Whether your business accesses its software on-site and so your workers will need VPN access or whether your data is hosted on the cloud will dictate your access governance strategy. Security teams will also need to accurately map and understand the full surface of the business with most staff now working from home. For those working with highly sensitive data, especially relating to clients, it will be imperative to know whether they are working on corporate devices or home devices and what extra measures need to be taken for those on home devices to ensure perimeter integrity.
Ways of solving these issues
Described by the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Ann Johnson as the ‘single best thing you can do’ to improve security for those working from home multi-factor authentication
40
should be a first port of call for all businesses. For organisations who haven’t already rolled out multi-factor authentication, the current circumstances should be treated as an emergency pilot and security installers should make clear instructions for setting up and following the process, as well as being on-hand in the early stages to support struggling staff. While it’s likely not a priority under the current circumstances, consistent vulnerability assessments are an essential way of maintaining the integrity of security systems. Having staff to regularly review practices, identify new threats and vulnerabilities and then generate ways to resolve them ensures the security of the software your business is using at all times. Even throughout the shift to home working, continuing to test the strength of the security measures your business has in place will be vital to avoid accidental data breaches and falling victim to malicious actors.
Threat from employees
Regardless of what security infrastructure a business operates, the biggest threat still comes from employees. 90% of cyber crimes are the result of human interaction, so any security framework that doesn’t prioritise training and awareness of all employees can only go so far. Especially at a time when more employees than ever are working from home, the most important step for cyber security installers and staff is to include extensive awareness as part of their process. Many employees won’t be aware of their level of protection while working from home and won’t understand the true extent of exposed data to the business. While many senior leaders will feel there is no time to focus on cybersecurity given the global circumstances, it’s vital to highlight how damaging a cyber breach could be at such a precarious time. Securing security systems is an ongoing job which is an integral part of any modern business. In normal times, consistent and comprehensive vulnerability testing is one of the most significant ways to maintain the security perimeter. However, the mass shift towards home working caused by COVID-19 will present other security issues which security staff will need to focus on. As employees still present the weakest link in the chain of all businesses, software implementation will need to go hand in hand with extensive training and awareness to keep the perimeter secure.

Cut storage and keep quality
Stefan Lundberg of Axis explains how you can be successful in cutting storage requirements but not video quality ver the past 10 years we have seen surveillance cameras deliver everimproving image quality. Today’s cameras can feature videos with amazingly detailed resolution at high frame rates. Wide dynamic range technology enables today’s cameras to capture detailed images even in scenes with complex light, while advanced image sensors allow for high-resolution color video even in extreme low-light conditions. Inevitably these advances in technology also increase the amount of data created, and with it the requirements in terms of network bandwidth and data storage. Intelligent compression methods can be used to cut bitrates by 50% or even more. The critical question, however, is which 50% to lose! It makes little sense to invest in high-quality video surveillance cameras if important details are lost when the bitrate is reduced to facilitate transfer across the network, or to reduce the storage capacity needed. The Axis solution to intelligent video compression is Zipstream, a technology developed in 2015 and continually updated and improved upon since which dynamically reviews video footage, recording critical detail in high resolution and full frame rate, while significantly reducing the bitrate for parts of the video that aren’t essential.
O It makes little sense to invest in high-quality video surveillance cameras if important details are lost when the bitrate is reduced to facilitate transfer Read more here:
42
If a scene under surveillance never changed, a camera could be configured once to deliver the best results at the optimum level of image compression. However, this is an unrealistic scenario. From an empty hotel lobby in the middle of the night to a train station during rush hour; to a mall entrance hall before Christmas to an office at the weekend, every situation is in a near constant state of change. It is therefore essential to have a surveillance camera system with the flexibility to adapt to these environments, optimising both image quality and bitrate, capturing forensic levels of detail when needed, and avoiding periods of recording ‘high-resolution nothingness’. Take for example the empty hotel lobby in the early hours of the morning. While there is very little happening and yet cameras might still be recording in high resolution at full frame rate, using significant bandwidth and storage. In such a situation, Zipstream compresses the least important data (in this case just about everything!) reducing bitrate significantly, in some case to almost zero, even though the camera still provides constant surveillance. Even in situations where there is a high amount of movement – take for instance the busy mall entrance during Christmas shopping season – intelligent compression will dynamically review the video in real-time, compressing the static parts of the image with little value while maintaining the resolution of the most critical detail. As the quality of video surveillance cameras improves almost exponentially, intelligent video compression has quickly moved from a ‘nice to have’ to absolutely essential: without it, data transfer and storage demands will become almost impossible to support. With that comes the risk of losing details critical to investigations, or an inability to retain recorded footage long enough for full and comprehensive analysis. It would be the ultimate irony if the quality of surveillance cameras resulted in data demands so high that few could afford to realise their benefits.

TRIED & TESTED
Hers is an overview of some of the products we have featured in PSI independent test reports. This month we highlight a range of systems listed in no particular order. As always, manufacturers and distributors have no input in the test reports or results Master Lock – CHW30300EURHR0 This Digital Security Chest is designed to preserve digital hard drives, electronic equipment, documents, photo albums, money, jewellery and more and is listed as being able to endure temperatures up to 843°C for 30 minutes protecting the stored contents (reportedly keeping items at 177°C) and it is ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratory) verified. Review: It is a good idea to have some form of security in your trade vehicle for the safe storage of cash. This chest is certainly secure enough to do the job and is not of the kind of weight or shape that anyone is going to be able to get away with easily. With an SRP of just £90 this is a solid unit that could prove priceless. 9.0/10
Ajax – Wireless Alarm System The Ajax alarm system is a wireless based EN50131 Grade 2 range of components that can be mixed and matched to suit a variety of home and office environments. Components are available in white or black finish to suit the décor of the site. Smartphone setup, management and monitoring along with extended battery life mean that the system is easy to install and use. Review: A wide range of detectors and simple set-up process makes for a potentially very quick installation. Good access to diagnostic information for monitoring purposes coupled with relatively straightforward battery changing. 9.5/10
Optex – BXS-AM Detector This is a wall or pole mountable IP55 outdoor “curtain” PIR intrusion detector that has dual narrow passive infrared detection zones either side of the device. Intended for example to cover side walls of buildings in order to trigger an alarm when people approach too close to the property. These side zones have a range of up to 12 metres, giving a coverage of up to 24 metres in total. Review: A very straightforward alarm device with clear operation and simple set-up. Apart from the reservations regarding cable entry and security of access the unit performs well and should prove easy to install. 8.5/10
Raytec – VAR2-IPPOE-HY8-1 This illuminator is a hybrid design providing both Infrared and White light illumination from one network controlled device. The Infrared wavelength is centred on 850nm and a 940nm version is available on request. Power is by 4-Pair PoE or optionally through a separate 24v DC supply. Review: The white light allowed extremely good colour reproduction and did not excessively flare on near objects even at the 100% output level. Similarly, the infrared had good even illumination over distance and allowed a good contrast range for subjects. Extremely versatile. 9.0/10

Codelocks – CL4510 The CL4510 is a door lock that combines smart technology with a traditional keypad and card access options suitable for a range of applications. One of the main benefits of the system is that the user can choose the most suitable entry method(s) for the application, therefore not limiting the scope of where installers can specify the lock. Review: The fact that one unit can do so much, especially when paired with the multifunction K3 Connect app makes this lock a dependable choice. Furthermore this is a straightforward future-proofed unit that does not require complicated installation work or either party having in-depth programming knowledge. 9.0/10
Union – DoorSense DoorSense from Union, part of Assa Abloy Security Solutions is a legal way for fire doors to be kept open for access and be able to close automatically in the event of an alarm. The battery-operated system is CE marked to EN 1155 standards. Review: The DoorSense does exactly what it should do and even though it looks like it weighs a ton it is actually extremely light for a motorised unit and therefore does not affect the effort required in everyday use of the door. 9.0/10
Squire - SS100CS padlock The SS100 is a dual cylinder 4.3kg padlock with open and closed shackle versions at 100mm wide. Opening and securing the lock is carried out via the use of two keys. Both need to be inserted before the 20mm thick Boron alloy shackle can be removed from the unit. Review: The marketing for the SS100 claims it to be the World’s strongest production padlock and on the evidence of this review, that might well be the case - it is easily the toughest padlock in terms of physical resistance we’ve ever tested. We found video footage of the unit surviving 120 rounds. 9.0/10
Satel - Slimline PIRs Satel produces a variety of PIR detectors within the Slimline range; the models tested and reported here are the Grade 2 “Slim-PIR-Luna” and the Grade 3 “Slim-Dual-Pro” models. The Luna version includes white-light illuminators, while this Pro version provides dual technology detection and anti-masking protection to EN 50131-2-4 if correctly configured. Review: A very good pair of detectors with the Luna model fulfilling an additional lighting role and the Dual Pro meeting the Grade 3 requirements and having good detection flexibility. 9.0/10
Seagate – SkyHawk ST14000VX0008 The 14TB SkyHawk is a conventionally packaged 3.5” hard drive with SATA connection. It is promoted as a surveillance optimised drive with “superior image integrity”. Multi-Tier Caching allows for up to 64 HD video streams to be handled. Review: A very fast and efficient hard drive with an impressive specification, vast storage and manufacturer support for data recovery if required. The attention to the specific current and developing requirements of the surveillance industry should ensure that this drive provides the required performance and longevity of service. 9.0/10

Hosted CCTV platform for bus lane enforcement Lancashire County Council has switched to Videalert systems for the enforcement of bus lanes throughout the county. The decision to standardise on Videalert’s hosted CCTV enforcement platform was taken to provide the council with the ability to manage multiple contravention types using a single platform. Marston Holdings group companies Videalert and NSL were selected to deliver the new enforcement solution. Peter Bell, parking and regulation manager at Lancashire County Council, said: “The single platform approach coupled with significant uptime demands meant our old cameras were seriously impacting on the effectiveness of our bus lane and ongoing parking enforcement strategy. Bus lanes improve travel times for people using public transport, and the Videalert system enables us to meet our compliance objectives by delivering a consistently higher level of performance, as well as providing the highest availability. The platform also delivers better value as future-proofing is built-in and additional camera assets and enforcement applications can be cost effectively added as required.” The council has initially installed Videalert bus lane cameras in 15 locations in Preston, Burnley and Lancaster. The ONVIF-compliant, digital HD cameras went ‘live’ before the end of December 2019 and capture quality images to minimise discard-rates, increase productivity and help reduce the number of appeals. County Councillor Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, commented: “The bus lanes are there to give priority for buses, and enforcing them helps to ensure that everyone follows the rules, and the system works as it
Essex school upgrades its fire protection system When facilities managers at the Campion School in Hornchurch, Essex realised that its life safety system would benefit from being upgraded, the team consulted local fire protection systems supplier, Fisk Group. There were a number of factors to consider when selecting a new system for the School. As well as enhanced efficiency and reduced running costs, the system also needed to offer networking capability without compromising the overall aesthetics of the site. Fisk Group opted to use Hochiki Europe’s FIREscape+ combined fire detection and emergency lighting system, which has the added benefit of wayfinding technology. Unlike traditional emergency lighting systems that require 230V to each unit, FIREscape+ units only require 40V and therefore do not need to be wired by a qualified electrician. The system is also designed to run via a single panel, and each loop combines both fire detection and emergency lighting units. Speaking about the project, David Brant,

should. I hope that we don’t make a penny from penalty notices once the cameras are working, as it will mean that people aren’t abusing the bus lanes.” The council already has a strategy to roll out the new system to the other locations. It is also considering other applications, including red routes and Mobile Enforcement Vehicles, to add to Videalert’s digital video platform, which can simultaneously support multiple traffic management and enforcement applications, such as clean air and low emission zones using the same infrastructure. Captured evidence packs are stored on Videalert’s hosted digital video platform where they can be accessed and reviewed securely over the internet. Validated evidence packs are sent to the council’s back office system to issue penalty charge notices (PCN). Videalert’s hosted platform makes it a simple process to deploy enforcement as it does not require the installation of any IT at the council’s offices. Contract Manager at Fisk Group noted: “Operating from a loop-based system, all units could be installed to the same bases, meaning we were able to complete the job quickly and efficiently. The system met the brief perfectly, being energy efficient, durable and aesthetically appealing. Also, the wayfinding function is an ideal added bonus.” Chris Connor, Site Manager at the Campion School added: “FIREscape+ is now actively helping us reduce our costs with regards to emergency lighting, while also giving us the reliable protection we need. It’s easy to use as well, which helps us cut down on maintenance and monitoring processes.”

renovators and commercial projects throughout the UK every day meaning that each site deals with high levels of vehicle and footfall traffic. Paul Bradley, group operations manager at Myers Group, said: “We already had CCTV in place, but it was outdated and unreliable, with many cameras being out-of-action, meaning that we experienced issues surrounding missed health and safety incidents, as well as trespassing. “We were aware that better technology was available, and that we could improve staff and visitor safety, whilst simultaneously having an immediate and positive impact on the bottomline.” Centurion designed a network of 335 HD cameras, 22 HD recording units and a PA system, which enables direct communication with any trespassers, to observe the sites and now carries out out-of-hours remote monitoring of the system. Thermal imaging cameras were also installed at Johnsons Wellfield quarry to capture movements in the large quarry during the night. The AI-learning cameras are able to filter out false alarms and will distinguish between an animal and a human. Previously, Myers spent £50,000 on security guards per annum. Paul continued: “The end result is a technologically-advanced system which saves us the annual salaries of security guards; deters thieves and trespassing; and provides us with a paper trail for any health and safety incidents.” video streams into the new IP network. Integrating the ice track’s video cameras into the data network, barox PoE switches and injectors feed live video streams to a local server and to the track control room. From the control room, all the essential areas of the bobsleigh run can be monitored, whether that be for a training session or competition run. “The new surveillance system allows us to see every inch of the system,“ says Tino Klein, Technical Manager at the Altenberg racing sledge and bobsleigh track. “Of course, the system is primarily important for safety reasons, because it enables us to continuously monitor athletes in the ice channel. But also, the work of the operators, timekeepers and commentators in competitions is also simplified by the technology. “Since installing the new video surveillance system, thanks to the barox switches, we have had trouble-free image transmission. This is particularly important at the Altenberg racing sled and bobsleigh track, as the video surveillance system also automatically records the speed of the pilots, which can be up to 140km/hr. Another special feature is the automatic switching of the cameras. Inside the ice channel are electronic beams, which as soon as a pilot passes through them, trigger cameras along the runway. Through this automatic switching of the cameras, the entire journey of an athlete through the ice channel is recorded.”

Sensors help protect and manage elephants Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors from Optex are at the heart of a new solution that is helping to protect endangered elephants at the Mount Kenya National Park. Mount Kenya is the second largest mountain in Africa, and the UNESCO listed National Park was established to protect the mountain, which is a water tower for the surrounding area and whose forest reserves and surrounding areas provide refuge for an array of wildlife, of which there is a large population of elephants, estimated at around 2,500. Despite the numbers, the animals are under constant threat from poachers, plus the changing geography of the region, and the proliferation of agricultural farms, has also resulted in increased incidences of human-elephant conflict, with the elephants causing damage to the fencing and property that surround these farms when trying to re-enter the park. Instarect selected Optex’s RLS-2020 LiDAR sensors as an integral part of the project. In conjunction with new solar powered gates and CCTV cameras that have been installed, the RLS-2020 sensors, with a 20x20m detection range, are being utilised to detect elephants as they approach and automatically open the gate for them. The sensors have been programmed to only detect elephants and will not open for smaller animals or humans. When the elephants trigger a gate to be opened, authorised park rangers are immediately notified via an SMS and are then able to view the CCTV cameras on their phone to check the whole herd has re-entered the park safely. The rangers then send an SMS to close the gate. Ebrahim Nyali, Security Solutions Designer at Instarect, says the new system is working well: “The elephants are very intelligent and have quickly adapted to these new gates. They have learned to wait for the gates to open for them to re-enter the park and do not try to enter with force.” Masaya Kida, Managing Director of Optex EMEA, says the Redscan RLS-2020 Series easily integrates with a video security solution: “These sensors are intentionally designed to create customised detection area and set a wide range of target sizes. This flexibility allows it to be used for many different and sometimes unusual applications; the elephant detection is a perfect illustration of that.” Siqura proposed its XCU Fusion and TrafficPTZ cameras for the project. The XCU Fusion is a rugged dual imaging (thermal/optical) camera for demanding environments, with double protection against corrosion as it is entirely made of powder-coated stainless steel (316L). The housing is hermetically sealed against water and dust. The TrafficPTZ Ultimo (TPU) is a network PTZ camera providing high-definition images. The integrated 30x optical zoom in combination with the dual LED illuminators and its embedded image stabilisation makes the camera ideal for traffic applications. The camera works day and night and is described as easy to operate. A sudden stop leads to immediate action. The commissioning agency which awarded the tender as part of a major improvement project of the Valík, Klimkovice and Husovice motorway tunnels had communicated tight deadlines and strict no-delay policies to prospective suppliers. Despite the limited time frame, Siqura has delivered all three projects on time and supported its partner throughout the initial ordering, logistics and installation process, providing continuous commercial and technical assistance.
