Standard behaviour Last month we were victims of a late standards amendment with an article that we carried about the NDAA. For those that spotted it and those that didn’t, here are the details of what happened

or the April 2021 podcast I spoke to Tom Ford of the BSIA about the work that the organisation is doing to help fire and security systems installers and manufacturers succeed in business. One of the main topics he mentioned that people often need help with understanding standards and their adoption (you can read the interview in PSI next month). The concern about keeping up to date with standards should come as no surprise as for many of us when we think of trading or business standards we imagine massive tomes of smallprint which, by the time you’ve gone through them, have already been amended. Of course this isn’t usually the case, but it was one of these changes that caught us out in the April edition. Standards come about for a number of reasons; political climate, technology developments or outdated operating procedures to name just three and they can also be changed at any point prior to, or after, coming into practice. It can take a lot of time to prepare standards too and, unlike the formation of a European Super League, it can involve a lot of input from a number of people across the spectrum of those it might affect before any announcements and declarations are made. Whatever the political reasoning behind the development of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in the US it essentially threw down some restrictions on the use of surveillance and communications technology from various manufacturers. It was a late change to these restrictions that caught us out last month as we incorrectly stated that the Act doesn’t just prevent federal agencies from deploying cameras manufactured by the blacklisted companies, it also bans them from conducting business with any organisation that is using them. This however, due to one of the aforementioned late changes to the Act, is not the case so a user of equipment from any of the companies mentioned in the NDAA can indeed participate in federally-funded contracts. Therefore if you are a UK-based company with contracts for US bodies or businesses you will not be restricted from working those contracts because you are using technology from ‘blacklisted’ manufacturers yourselves. Hopefully that has cleared up any issues with that. Although we now have a different US President from when the NDAA was born so by the time you read this, who knows what else might have changed... Streaming video surveillance grows in popularity during the last year Vemotion Interactive has reported that over the past twelve months, trends in streaming live video have accelerated with an increase in demand for mobile and rapid deployment CCTV camera solutions. “Several project decisions were delayed initially but we have seen activity really pick-up latterly,” confirms says Steve Haworth, CEO at Vemotion. “Private sector projects have been much more mixed, and many are now starting to look at video streaming as ways to be more efficient and flexible.” The ability to install cameras in an area of specific interest, whether for temporary deployment or fixed; to monitor crime hotspots for drugs observation, persistent vandalism, fly-tipping or neighbourhood nuisances has seen a noticeable uptake. “Agencies wanting to maximise their surveillance budgets and efficiency, in essence, to be more proactive at capturing off-grid incidents rather than missing events,” says Steve. “The integration of our streaming encoders and software makes it very easy to capture live video footage as it unfolds, and alongside the use of video analytics, control rooms can be automatically alerted to activity without the need for constant human monitoring. This provision provides ‘eyes on the ground’ and the vital intelligence for organisations to make faster and more informed decisions to drive better outcomes.” Integrators and organisations are developing new solutions to a raft of common problems as Steve explains: “We’re seeing our VB-35 encoder allied to facial and face mask recognition being deployed across many applications. The use of compact, lightweight encoders to provide live mobile video on drones for search and rescue operations has really escalated, to provide quicker and cheaper airborne search capability vs the traditional expensive helicopter alternative.”

You share my passion for Apprenticeships, what have EFT done to bring young people into our industry? Ten years ago we identified how important it was for us to bring new talent into our business and we decided we needed to invest in Apprentices. We identified the need for a flow of qualified engineers coming into the company each year to support our growth strategies and that’s why we decided to invest in the EFT Academy! This has steadily grown year-on-year and currently we have 25 apprentices in the Academy. Interestingly, one third of our current apprentices are female! Our industry isn’t just for boys, it is for anybody who is handson and wants to be an engineer. What do you look for in an Apprentice? We focus on two main things: values and attitude. The rest, we can teach! We want people who want to join us because they know who EFT are and what we stand for. Furthermore, we want individuals who are going to give it there all and commit to an exciting career in our industry. We get lots of applicants who were originally looking at electrical apprenticeships, but after some work experience or initial training, they see the variety that our sector has to offer and they often choose us! The more publicity we can get for our industry, the more young people we can help to find a fulfilling career. What can someone expect from an Apprenticeship? You never know on a day-to-day basis what challenges you will face in this world and this really excites the young people that we have met. All our Apprentices are energetic, go-getting and love to show off their skills! This is why we continue to be supporters of the Engineers of Tomorrow and WorldSkills UK competitions. Apprentices love competing against their peers from around the country and showing off their skills. How have your Apprentices made a difference to your business? Without doubt, our Apprentices have helped to sustain and directly grow our business. Not only have they enabled us to recruit further afield by showcasing our industry through careers events and talks, but they have also helped us with succession planning throughout our business. Our former Apprentices now hold roles including Team Leaders, Operations Managers, Lead Engineers, Surveying and Design, Training and Audit Managers. To anyone considering an Apprentice, go for it. he Quick-Start guide describes the device as a Video Security Assistant. Up to eight cameras with a resolution up to HD (1920 x 1080) can be connected to each unit. It does not provide video recording but an analysis function to identify different subjects and to allow encrypted alerts to be sent out to mobile devices with snapshots of the event. All images are processed on the device with nothing sent out to “cloud” processing services. Received alerts are sent via specific secure messaging services.

Getting started

The Quick-Start guide describes the device as a Video Security Assistant. Up to eight cameras with a resolution up to HD (1920 x 1080) can be connected to each unit 12

The device has connectors for power input (5v DC, 3A), an RJ45 network port and two USB ports. A small hole close to the power input gives access to a reset switch. Beneath the smoked transparent top panel is mounted a 16 x 8 red LED array that is used to provide various messages during start up and operation. At power-up all LEDs illuminate for around forty seconds followed by a sequence of LED pairs moving through the display for around 15 seconds more, at which point an error or system started message is briefly shown before the display goes blank. After around two minutes from initial power the display scrolls the Ethernet address that the unit has picked up from a DHCP server. This IP address is then displayed every minute. The MAC address identifies that the unit is based on a Raspberry Pi single board computer with an additional graphics processor unit for managing its video analytics. There is no access to the HDMI port so no start-up diagnostic

information can be viewed. Once established on the network a PC can be used to access the device’s webserver at the specified address. A basic username and password are initially used and while the opening page advises the user to change this, it is not mandated, and the reminder remains in place. The optional relay module has four mains rated single pole changeover relays and requires only a 230-volt AC mains input. It has its own WiFi source, and this is used to connect to the Monitoreal via the settings options. A Wi-Fi search is used to show local signals and the Monitoreal Relay connection can be used along with a simple password to connect. The Monitoreal device must then be power cycled for the relay to be available to the system alerts. Telegram is the recommended connection service, and this application can be loaded onto a laptop or mobile device. Setting up the Telegram account can be troublesome as it is a social media platform rather than security industry specific so many conventional usernames are already allocated, the Monitoreal website gives access to a video guide covering the basics of set-up. Once a 46-character token from the Telegram app has been entered into the Monitoreal alert page and the service enabled, a secure connection is made.

Configuration Options Once connected via the browser you are first given an option to add cameras from the network. This can be by automatic search for ONVIF enabled devices or individually entered as RTSP stream commands. It appears that the automatic search simply uses the primary stream from any discovered cameras, and it will try to connect to cameras above 1920 x 1080 which is its maximum resolution so any such cameras will need to be connected using a secondary stream set to a maximum of HD. It was noted that with a connection made to a 4MP stream, the camera’s main stream was affected by a periodic video level change once or twice a minute until deselected. Many of the latest cameras may have ONVIF and RTSP connections inhibited by default so these will need to be enabled prior to search or manual connection. The connected cameras are then shown on the Home/Cameras page and here beneath a view of the last capture from the camera, the current settings are shown below a first tab with a second tab showing Alert & Action Rules. Options below the settings allow for changes to be made

and for a Track zone to be set on the scene. The Alert & Action rules tab shows the currently allocated alerts such as Person or Car and their associated detection settings. The configuration Settings menu includes options for Alerts – the messaging system to be used, System – showing information along with T & D settings, Network – Ethernet and Wi-Fi connection changes, Relays – relay search option (then status when online), Profile – username and password change options. The Home page camera display shows the current settings along with options to change them. This includes Capture Source – stream or snapshot setting, Deep Sight Mode – for small or distant objects and low light, Motion threshold – size of moving objects, Queue priority – order of image processing, OD minimal accuracy – object ignore threshold, OD alerts doublecheck – false alarm elimination. Buttons allow the above setting to be changed and for the track zone to be defined for the detection area. The camera display shows how many objects are classified for detection. These are selected from a lengthy list including Person, Car, Truck, Bus, Dog, Cat and various other vehicles and animals. Each object can have a minimum quantity in the scene specified, along with start and end times plus days of the week for detection. The optional relay unit has programable on / off timings and the flexibility to allocate outputs to different camera alerts. The Telegram app gives a better understanding of the implications of detection settings and can be used for walk-testing the system. It includes text commands to activate / deactivate cameras, mute notifications, arm and disarm the system and control the relays if used. Additionally, a variety of reports can be generated along with a sequence of event clips downloaded for any activity of interest.

Performance

Monitoreal provides a means to add advanced analytics and mobile notifications to existing IP based security systems and avoids using “Cloud” service providers for storage or routing control 14

The Monitoreal unit does not record any video and is intended to simply give real-time alerts with static images to a recipient using a messaging service such as Telegram, Slack or Webhooks. E-mail is an option but is not recommended as the notifications “may appear as Spam and be blocked due to frequent messages”. A great deal of care must be taken to set up the system configuration and to ensure the camera fields of view are appropriate. The system was able to identify people and vehicles within the scene but there were several incorrect classifications such as a pushchair being

identified as a bicycle, a bird as a dog and people on bicycles being identified as just person. Future updates will presumably fine-tune the performance as more examples are assessed and classified. Even with Cars excluded from the search their outlines continue to be highlighted and this created multiple ongoing captures with no apparent way to prevent it beyond extending detection parameters. Detected events are indicated on the scrolling LED display as for example “Detected Car” but are easily missed. The configuration was found to be very frustrating to work through and the documentation is basic without expanding on the various features and any limitations. The Time and Date settings allow the time zone to be set but do not allow for Daylight saving settings so for the UK remain at GMT. This means that there is a 1-hour difference between any camera generated Time & Date and the event capture time shown below the images during summertime. While the time does appear to be network sourced and accurate, there is currently no option to change the source. With a 4MP camera connected using a lower resolution stream, the on-screen identification percentage text was very large and, in some cases, obscured useful parts of the scene. This could also be masked by Car details that were not wanted. A large Monitoreal overlay could be seen in the bottom right corner of one camera image but there appeared to be no documented way to remove or change this. The Telegram app worked well and quickly uploaded images of events once configured, but still with too many car detected and car disappeared messages relating to static vehicles.

Conclusion Monitoreal provides a means to add advanced analytics and mobile notifications to existing IP based security systems and avoids using “Cloud” service providers for storage or routing control. This may have some security advantages for individuals but connecting through such freeware messaging services would possibly not be recommended by corporate IT specialists. he Virtual Innovation Centre features immersive virtual reality, where visitors are able to walk through a large pavilion and see Dahua’s latest product and technology innovations. Visitors can select an automatic tour of the entire pavilion to get an overview on what is on offer, with the option of stopping at particular exhibits to drill down to the level of detail they require. Alternatively, visitors can navigate the pavilion at their own pace, stopping off wherever they like. Users can visit the site around the clock and there is no limit to the number of times it can be accessed. “We are thrilled by the launch of our Virtual Innovation Centre, which has been carefully planned and designed to give users the optimum experience from the comfort and safety of their own homes or offices,” said Michael Lawrence, Marketing Director for Dahua UK & Ireland. “It is the closest thing visitors can get to a live physical exhibition, but with the addition of a wealth of multimedia and online content.” The virtual exhibition can be accessed either by web address or by scanning a QR code. For the purposes of this article we used the QR code, which took us to a page that required completion of a contact details form. Fromthe submission of the form, you enter the Centre. There are a few navigational tools displayed to help with zooming and movement etc, which vary depending on whether you are using a PC or a smartphone. An array of action buttons are displayed giving quick access to map toggle, automated

walkthrough, email contact, buying option, 3D glasses view and more. We decided to take a manual stroll through the centre using a smartphone and a VR headset for the 3D experience and following the arrows on the virtual floor the tour began. First off, the screen shows the pavilion ahead with a greeter to welcome you to the area with a short audio presentation. Along the route there are footprint markers which you can “stand on” using the headset by holding the on screen pointer in one position. This is also the same method you use for starting video or viewing product data. Straight ahead is a corporate video and the footprint markers here put you in front of various company displays including one that gives an overview of Dahua (number of employees, R&D, distributor coverage etc) and a history timeline. The first technology displays cover multisensor and panoramic cameras, the AI algorithm and the scenario defined camera. Holding the pointer on the display brings up either a video or some slides giving overviews of the technology. Any images of kit featuring an orange marker enable access to product datasheets which can be saved or made a ‘favourite’ for future reference. Continuing on the tour are displays about various technologies including signage, PoE, access, thermal cameras, intercoms and HDCVI. The intercom area is particularly noteworthy as it displays three real application scenarios, AI, modular apartment and single house showing how all of the units connect up to make the installation. Then follows an area dedicated to managing aspects linked to controlling Covid-19 issues such as wrist temperature monitoring, face mask detection, people flow control etc. The next area is dedicated to verticals such as smart energy, transportation, banking, smart residential and retail with plenty of video and information showing what the technology offers in these sectors. The final display is dedicated to Dahua’s technology partners (Paxton, Immix, Monitor, HKC, Optex, Webeye, Milestone and Wavestore) with each logo taking you to a video and an external web link. The overall idea of the Virtual Innovation Centre is nothing new but it is put together very well, runs very smoothly and it does look like it could be a feature that Dahua will expand going forward. It’s certainly worth twenty minutes of your time, so put the kettle on, settle down and have a look around!

The security industry in 2021 This month we chat to Ian Durham of Honeywell Building Technologies about the security industry and markets in 2021 hilst many of us work and operate only in the UK market the security industry is without doubt a global business. However during the last twelve months the entire world has seen markets and technology devel;opments affected by a pandemic. To find out how the UK fares and compares in the current worldwide market we spoke to Ian Durham, Channel Sales Leader at Honeywell Building Technologies, one of those companies with a much larger footprint than just these shores.

The industry was quick to adapt during 2020 with various technologies being used to help identify non-security problems during the pandemic. Will this now be a trend? Like many, the security industry had to consider where and how best it could help customers with the challenges brought about by the pandemic. While many of these challenges were already areas our customers were familiar with, things like secure building access or leveraging video systems, the current health crisis added pressure to address new regulations and issues by quickly adapting existing technologies and developing new solutions. We’ve been able to deliver additional value to our customers by looking deeper at traditional security offerings such as people counting in retail spaces to help manage occupancy limits, leveraging video analytics for mask detection and social distancing compliance, and using Cloud technology to offer remote door access to assist with safer deliveries and/or access to a building. All these offerings help to create safer environments for our customers and their building occupants. Technology and changes in personal behavior are rapidly transforming what we now view as normal. Has the pandemic made contactless access control the first choice for new installations? Technology is ever-changing, and adoption of frictionless access control was increasing before the pandemic. I expect it will continue to grow as the UK eases out of the current restrictions as many customers are expressing interest. We’re

having conversations with customers on how to best deploy frictionless access and what modifications need to be kept in mind based on a particular building and how it is used. Does the rise in networked security, cloud and IoT give you any cause for concern? If all technology is IP-based does this pose any risks? While change isn’t always easy, the move towards networked security or cloud-based technology is exciting. Removing the costs associated with on-premise platforms and using subscription-based models to host and provide services are all aimed at reducing infrastructure costs, whilst offering greater levels of service and maintenance options. We developed our Cloud solutions to support this directional change and to meet the business requirements for our installer community and end customers alike. How does the UK security market differ from others in Europe? Are there any systems popular here that are not overseas and vice versa? There are no distinct differences between continental Europe and the UK market except some legislative requirements. The UK market has a business infrastructure that supports and focuses on software integration and solutions, which sets it up to be well positioned for cloud connectivity. How do you think a move to all-IP communications will affect the alarm market in the UK? Any problems ahead for installers? A move to all-IP communication has the potential to be a game changer for the market while it has different considerations than more traditional installations. As an example, alarm centres with a traditional transmission signal would need to implement updates with an all-IP solution and would have to integrate with the IT infrastructure. This example represents a potential problem for installers who aren’t well enough equipped to understand IP technology and infrastructure requirements to deal with the cybersecurity requirements. That said, there are

HVM AND SECURITY STRATEGIES Hostile Vehicle Management (HVM) has a critical role to play in protecting property and, more importantly, people. Here, Richard Winstanley at Bft Automation, explores what installers need to consider when advising clients on how HVM fits into their security strategy … make when advising clients on their HVM strategies.

HVM is now a necessary consideration for installers helping clients to protect their assets and, more importantly, their people

hile terror attacks don’t dominate news headlines the way they did pre-Covid, the threat of terrorism in the UK remains serious. The current threat level set by the Government is ‘Substantial’, which sadly means that an attack is likely at any time. As such, hostile vehicle management (HVM) is now a necessary consideration for installers helping clients to protect their assets and, more importantly, their people. A good example of how HVM fits into a wider security strategy is the recent consultation being carried out by the city of Bath into how best to protect itself in the case of physical threat. A World Heritage Site, Bath is rich in historic and cultural buildings – the beautifully preserved Roman Baths sit alongside pristine Georgian architecture, providing a huge attraction for tourists, not least since Netflix aired its global hit Bridgerton. With this in mind, a security strategy that preserves the iconic look and feel of the city, while prioritising the safety of those who live, work and visit there, is paramount. The questions raised by this consultation are relevant across the board and have flagged a number of considerations that installers need to

It is important to be clear about whether the HVM is temporary - perhaps for an event - or (as in Bath’s case) a permanent fixture to protect a city or property at all times. Temporary measures are often best resolved with surface mounted products, but more permanent features would usually require ground works, including foundations into the ground where they are placed. There are numerous permanent solutions which range from automatic bollards to static columns and barriers. And the aesthetic can be designed to suit the location. A permanent static barrier, for example, could appear as a planter, or a bench clad in a material that will blend with surroundings. This is important in Bath which prides itself on its appearance and architectural heritage. It’s worth noting, however, that concrete blocks, planters, Jersey Barriers and low concrete walls are all able to secure access points effectively but they're difficult to install and move. After installation, they can no longer be moved without the use of a crane and specialised personnel, resulting in higher costs and more time. What’s more, if rammed by a truck travelling at more than 30 mph, conventional barriers will slow the vehicle, but could still be displaced beyond the point of impact and may still strike any anyone in the immediate vicinity. The simplest and most versatile solution is to install anti-terrorism bollards, both fixed and retractable. These can adapt to the needs of the local administration by preserving the appearance of the environment, while providing safety in the case of impact at speeds of up to 50 mph.

particularly in city centres. In tourist centres, the atmosphere needs to remain welcoming for visitors and residents alike. However, there must be a balance between suitable protection and creating a system that is not obvious to those wishing to exploit weaknesses in the city’s security. Think protection, safety, aesthetics. While barriers are designed to keep hostile vehicles out, we must also consider the need to allow emergency vehicles in, should the need arise. This is where a solution such as retractable bollards will come into play, with vehicle access control built in for emergency and operational vehicles. This solution offers flexibility to accommodate temporary changes in traffic flow or events.

At the very minimum, a smaller scale project will need to involve the whole security team, as well as property occupants and management, to fully understand their needs and priorities.

Traffic flow To supplement the installation of any kind of physical barrier – whether this is to protect a warehouse, a hospital or a cultural centre – consider how traffic currently flows around the location and whether this can be reviewed to keep vehicles further away from the property. Vehicles approaching the property will need an area of ‘run up’ in order to build up speed. If this is denied them, by the very nature of the road layout, the risk to life and of damage caused to property is reduced. Considerations for HVM are an essential part of any effective security strategy and installers are well placed to advise on this. By considering the needs of the present, while keeping an eye to the future, installers can support their clients in taking every precaution to protect their property and people from threat. We suggest installation, operation and management by professional installers, as they can provide remote support and maintenance services as and when required. AX PRO is designed for use mainly in domestic and small to medium (SMB) commercial markets. What would you say is the main appeal for installers to use the system? Where they switch on and off street and building lights as people come and go, where traffic jams are predicted and vehicles are automatically rerouted, where more tills are opened just before a queue starts to form and where cameras identify our personal shopping habits and show us how we might look in the latest outfit based on our likes as we browse. They can effectively observe and process information and instigate actions all based on our wishes. The changes to daily life I described earlier may seem subtle but they can very quickly accumulate to massive social benefits, for example, in the areas of energy and environmental conservation. These types of intelligent camera applications are the very basis for automation and the introduction of industry 4.0 where processes are automated, monitored and controlled by AI-driven systems. We are about to see an explosion of AI camera applications in the same way that we experienced an explosion of smartphone applications. bringing to market specialist applications for a variety of different uses. Much like the App Store and Google Play for the smartphone, AI camera applications will proliferate based on market demand and succeed or fail based on the value they deliver. These applications, of course, will emerge as the existing generation of cameras are updated to the new open and intelligent next generation devices and the existing role of the security camera will also continue. But rather than relying on the security cameras for evidence when things have gone wrong, we will increasingly be able to use AI and the cameras in a proactive way to prevent incidents. That could be monitoring and alerting when health and safety guidelines are being breached or spotting and flagging patterns of suspicious behaviour before incidents occur. Many have been concerned about the potential impact of cameras and AI on individual privacy and worry about a potential Big Brother influence but I firmly believe this will not be the case. The use of AI technology in the camera

system is really about the ability to generate and analyse meta data to quickly recognise patterns of information - rather than a focus on individuals and their identities. The technology provides us with better, faster and more accurate information. It is then up to organisations to decide how they best use that information. On that front, I am pleased to say that Europe already has some of the strictest privacy regulations in the world and as our regulators continue to catch-up with the advances of the technology, we will see these protections continue. We will continue to find a way to balance security and freedom. Alongside this, I also believe that people’s attitudes will start to change when they see the incredible benefits this technology can deliver. I hope that we will be able to redefine our view of cameras – not just as insurance – but as life advancing and enhancing. I believe these technology advances are truly disruptive and AI-driven cameras will be a gamechanger for commerce and society. I look forward to seeing these efforts come to fruition.

Tomorrow’s engineers today David Scott, Managing Director of Skills for Security, in the first of a new series, discusses his passion for training in our sector, the increased investment in apprenticeships and how the pathway to becoming a fully-fledged engineer is a valuable route to filling the gaps in our industry

his is my first column for PSI magazine and I’m looking forward over the next year in giving a monthly insight into apprenticeships, training, quality of training, competitions, funding, and much more. Thank you for inviting me to be able to contribute to your publication. In this column, I want to provide readers with more knowledge of what is involved in the apprenticeship. I can't speak for all providers, but I will try as much as possible to summarise. As many of my friends and colleagues know, I am hugely passionate about the sector and training. For me, they go hand in hand. To ensure the sustainability of our sector, we need qualified engineers. To get qualified engineers, we need more apprentices. This column isn't about Skills for Security. It is about the sector and what training options and initiatives are available to employers. Over the years, employer access to training has been challenging, but with new training centres popping up across the nation, increased support of apprenticeships at government level and many fantastic incentives, now is the time to recruit an apprentice.

The apprenticeship is typically completed over three years, but this can be reduced when someone has worked in the sector for several years or has relevant qualifications. The quickest it can be completed is one year and one week. So for those that are not qualified, the apprenticeship can be a route for you to achieve formal recognition of your skills and knowledge. Apprenticeships aren't just for the young; apprenticeships are for anyone of any age from any background. The government funding can be complex, but if you are an SME, they will fund apprenticeships from 95-100%. There are also fantastic incentives available to receive up to £4000 for 16-18 year-olds and £3000 for 19+ until September 2021. The Fire Emergency & Security apprenticeship has four different pathways. You can choose for your apprentice to do security only, fire only, fire and security or fire and emergency lighting. The most popular pathway for Skills for Security is the fire and security pathway, but this may vary.

Apprenticeships aren't just for the young; apprenticeships are for anyone of any age from any background. The government funding can be complex, but if you are an SME, they will fund apprenticeships from 95-100% Each of the pathways is broken down into Knowledge (what they learn in the classroom), Skills (what they learn practically with their employer and provider) and Behaviours (can be taught, instinctive or innate). Our own goals are for apprentices at the end of the first year to be able to do tasks such as first and second fixing; cabling and containment installation; work safely; achieve their ECS cards and have a good understanding of electrical principles and safe isolation procedures. All of this with little to no supervision requirements. At the end of the second year, we aim for all apprentices to have the knowledge to install, commission and program control and indicating equipment (CIE); have an excellent working knowledge of relevant standards and codes of practice; use test equipment. Again all of this with little to no supervision.

In their third year, this is where we believe the apprentices flourish and become engineers. In this period, we give them both the practical and theoretical skills to carry out audits on systems in compliance with the standards; the processes and procedures for carrying out preventative and corrective maintenances, plus knowing the correct working practices to problem solve and fault find. The entire curriculum syllabus is 144 pages long, though the main assessment points we judge the apprentice's competency against are as outlined above. As you can see, it is a full and extensive curriculum. There have been several changes to the apprenticeship from 2017 - all for the better, in my opinion. A group of employers developed the current apprenticeship called the FESS employer group. This is a group of employers, trade associations, inspectorates, and training providers who voluntarily developed the apprenticeship that over 1000 people are currently enrolled on throughout England. How much does the apprenticeship cost? The total cost is £18000 for the full three years. However, if you are an SME, this is usually funded by the government from 95% to 100%, depending on the age of the person enrolled. This means the total cost to an employer is a maximum of £900 for the full three years of training. If you are a large levy employer (i.e. your wage bill is over £3m) the costs come directly from your digital account. Wellbeing best practice pt2 Here we continue the serialisation of the book “Five Practices of Wellbeing, from the Science of Wellbeing, for High Performance” by Cora Lynn Heimer Rathbone of Rathbone Results Focus on Strengths Why is this important? Quite simply because when we focus on and play to our strengths, we feel better in ourselves and generate more learning – especially when the strengths we are focusing on are reinforced through sincere positive comments and feedback from others. Psychologists in the field of wellbeing put such value on focusing on strengths that they measure positive comments versus negative comments through the “Losada ratio”. To create a positive working context, the ideal Losada ratio is 3:1 or greater. That means that positive working environments are those in which positive feedback is three times greater than negative or constructive feedback. To create a context in which people flourish and are “in flow” (e.g. a tennis player hitting the ball consistently from the centre of the racket with spotless timing), the ratio is 5:1. Of course that flies against “exception reporting” in finance, risk assessment and quality inspections where the focus is on exception reporting and what needs to be better…. As humans we grow most when we know (and play to) what we are good at – especially what others corroborate we are good at. So positive

comments and feedback reinforce our understanding of our strengths. Positive comments and a focus on our strengths build new synapses – connections between brain cells that create wisdom – and encourage the development of a growth mindset. Even constructive/negative feedback, delivered positively by linking it to a strength, lets us know how we need to extend our strengths. Having said this, playing too much to strengths can result in an exaggeration of those strengths – and that can become toxic. Example: One client, a senior leader, has enormous strength in attention to detail. Under stress that turns to perfectionism and micromanagement which makes people think she doesn’t trust them. That’s not good. That’s not what we are talking about here. Let’s not let this truth detract from the power of playing to and focusing on strengths – the power of having growth mindsets - to thrive in life and work. For the opposite of focusing on and playing to strengths is to focus on weaknesses or development areas. Neuroscientists have shown that a focus on weaknesses creates and amplifies negative spirals. Starting with the negatives

makes us feel bad about ourselves, puts us in a fixed mindset, does not bring out our best. A 2015 study by Gallup, owners of the Clifton Strength Finder (a great resource if you are unsure about your strengths) asked people to give a score 1 to 5 (1 being low, 5 being high) to the question: “My manager maintains a coaching relationship with me that emphasizes my strengths.” One of the most powerful things we can say to one another is: “I believe in you. I believe in your potential.” Ongoing research in the field of medicine has shown that one of the most important contributing factors to effectiveness of medical procedures is when doctors and clinicians say: “I believe in your potential to heal.” This is proving to be more than just a placebo effect. It goes without saying – but let me say it anyway – that such comments have to be sincere. If you are unsure of your strengths, why not ask three to five colleagues who work closely with you to email you answers to three questions: “What do I do well?” “What could I do better?” “What could I start doing that I’m not currently doing to add greater value?” Done sincerely, this exercise helps pinpoint your strengths and play to them in the broader context of your development areas (“what you could do better and what you could start doing to add greater value”). Again, well-intended constructive feedback (“what you could do better”) is an encouragement when hooked to a strength. (e.g. “You’re so strong on the details. How can you help so-and-so understand the details you look for so you don’t need to micromanage them as you sometimes do?”) Also, to not have others point out development areas could lead us to mediocrity instead of being the people of strength we could

and need to be for ourselves and for the business. Consider the story of a member of a senior leadership team, Pedro. During a coaching call, he said: “I’ve always worked with my hands … I think by doing … What strengths do I have as a manager and leader?” Encouraged by the coaching session, Pedro reached out to 7 close colleagues with the above questions. He got answers from all 7 and discovered his strengths as seen by his closest collaborators. This gave him confidence to step more fully into his role as a Board Director – even as he continued to lead “with hands”. It pays to know our strengths and to play to them. We often most enjoy doing what we are good at – working to our strengths. As Voltaire said: “Do what you enjoy doing and you’ll not work a day in your life.” The neurosciences say that when we focus on strengths, we deepen those strengths, build new neural pathways, gain confidence to trial new behaviours, create positive spirals, increase our motivation. By contrast, when we focus on development areas or weaknesses, we trigger fight, flight, freeze modes, reinforce current behaviour, create negative spirals and negative dialogues, erode confidence. How can we develop this practice of focusing on strengths and positive comments and release Dopamine? • Complete tasks by focusing your strengths and the strengths of team-players on the task • Take the time to say “well done” to yourself whenever you finish something well • Celebrate wins, especially small ones, throughout the day, saying “well done” to the team and to others and asking “what went well that I/we can repeat?” Why not start by: 1) Listing the strengths that you bring to your job? Ask yourself how you can make more use of those every day. Unmanned train depots secured by Video Analytics Southeastern Rail Network operates train services between London, Kent and parts of East Sussex. It is one of the busiest networks in the country, transporting 640,000 passengers each weekday on its 392 trains, which are temporarily housed in 12 depots situated around South-East England. Rubbish removal alone was costing the management company more than £12,000 annually. Hall & Kay were asked to solve this problem by implementing an end-to-end video solution. The H&K team began by replacing the ten column-

mounted PTZ cameras with IDIS cameras. IDIS technicians visited the site with the H&K engineers and conducted a bandwidth test on the existing cabling – demonstrating that, by using the existing coax with IDIS ethernet converters, up to four fixed bullet cameras could be mounted on each existing column. Additionally, wireless access points were installed where cameras couldn’t be cabled directly to the estate control room. This approach eliminated blind-spots and guaranteed that events would not be missed when the system was unmanned. To provide wider coverage, a further six columns were added, and additional IDIS cameras were mounted in the underground car parking areas. The system now delivers full HD images in all lighting conditions, with built-in IR ensuring nighttime image capture at distances up to 30m. All footage is stored for 30 days. The security officers and maintenance staff who manage the estate are also taking advantage of the easy-to-use analytics functions that come with the IDIS Center video management software (VMS). These tools include motion detection which can be utilised out of hours to ensure that scenes are only recorded when movement occurs, thus minimising bandwidth usage and storage requirements. This feature, along with IDIS MapVue navigation, also makes it easy to quickly review footage to find incidents of interest. The 57 IDIS full HD IR cameras, and the three NVRs with 12TB storage each, benefit from plugand-play set up with DirectIP. When the South Meridian management team saw the quality of images now being captured, they asked if the system could be extended. Within 24 hours of cameras being installed, departing tenants were recorded illegally dumping rubbish. Shortly after this, a contractor working at the site reported that tools had been stolen – in both cases, high definition evidence of the crime was captured and passed to the police. Thanks to the design of the system, and the easyto-use VMS controls, security staff were able to retrieve footage of the incident itself, along with a full video trail of the thief moving across the estate before and afterwards. Word has now spread about how effective the new system is, and residents are delighted that there are now no blind-spots.
