EDITORIAL
Degrees of learning Former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair recently called for a sizeable increase in the number of young people going to university over the next two decades to “tackle the country’s productivity crisis”. Not bothered about essential trade skills then Tony?

n a recent report the former prime minister recommended that by 2040 as many as 70% of young people should go into Higher Education (HE), which could, he says, increase economic growth by nearly 5%. Under the proposals, the aim is for the proportion going on to HE to increase to 60% by 2030 and 70% by 2040 in line with other high-innovation economies around the world like Asia. The proposals appear to favour the idea that the kind of job you get when you have a degree will be of more value to society and also pay more than a job for which you don’t need a degree. Comparing a lawyer’s salary to a cleaner’s salary might bear this out, but you have to wonder what benefit there is if, as a society, we are overrun with Art History scholars and Lesbian Dance graduates and what role those people will go on to play in the cocalledhigh-innovation economy. Sir Peter Lampl, founder and chairman of social mobility experts The Sutton Trust, warned the taxpayer would end up footing the bill for a lot of student loans as he said: “Too many kids are going to university.” And while the students are racking up debt the universities are charging more than ever for courses. Celebrity chef Raymond Blanc said that students would be 'better off' applying for apprenticeship schemes commenting: “Tony Blair is saying that seven out of ten teenagers should go to university. I say that as many would do better to sign for an apprenticeship. Never so many crafts, industries have been so short of staff.” We agree. As Peter Hitchens point out in his Daily Mail column: “Did you ever need an Arts graduate in a hurry?” Indeed, while in Tony’s new world order we would gain a higher number able to work on a laptop sitting at a desk doing essential work with their Gender Studies qualification, we would also have a higher number of people who don’t even know something as basic as how to rewire a plug or fix a leaking tap. We’ve known for a while that there is a shortage of people coming into the security installation sector, which is why PSI has teamed up with Skills for Security to get more young talent into a field that will benefit both themselves and society. As an installer you can help future-proof the trade by taking on apprentices and giving your team the appropriate training and development throughout their career. To find out how you go about this come along to a free Next Generation event this year. For more information use the QR code here. Andy Clutton EDITOR

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L
Toshiba innovation award success for Secure Logiq Secure Logiq has won the Technical Innovation Award Europe 2021 in the Surveillance Hard Disk Drive category from Toshiba. The two manufacturers have built a partnership to bring storage solutions to the surveillance industry. The recognition is part of Toshiba’s Sales Excellence Awards and was presented on behalf of Toshiba Electronics Europe. When naming Secure Logiq as the award winners, Toshiba expressed its deepest appreciation for the enduring partnership the companies have in the storage business. It also highlighted that together the two manufacturers are helping Toshiba to achieve its Storage Products Division’s mission to enable data storage in the easiest and most reliable way. “We are delighted to receive this recognition from Toshiba,” said Secure Logiq Sales Director, Ben Yoxall. “We have had a strong relationship with Toshiba over many years and believe that our combined skillsets have ensured surveillance professionals all over the world have the best storage solution for their needs. This award is testament to all the hard work the whole Secure Logiq team has put in and shows the value that we both put on this relationship.” Toshiba hard disks are a key component of many Secure Logiq servers. The hard disks are available in a range of sizes meaning that Secure Logiq can use them to optimise a server’s performance to the requirements of the end user.
The Digital Access Solutions Academy opens Abloy UK has launched its Digital Access Solutions Academy – a purpose-built facility to showcase, work with, install and test the company’s products with particular focus on new digital solutions and ecosystems. Ian Miller, Digital Access Solutions Academy Manager at Abloy UK, says: “The first focus of training at the new facility centres around our Incedo access control product range, and is aimed at security engineers and sales teams. “I truly believe people learn best by doing something, so the training is designed to be hands on and shows how to specify, install and support their customers requiring an access control solution. “Digital Access Solutions is a relatively new area for Abloy UK, and my ultimate goal is to have a variety of training courses on our whole portfolio, equally benefiting our customers and Abloy UK.”
The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Luke Wadsley of PWP Fire & Security, Nottingham. Having completed his apprenticeship in 2020, Luke is now a fully qualified engineer. How did your career in the Fire & Security sector begin? Upon leaving school I initially did my first year of A-Levels at a local college. I enjoyed learning but didn’t want to continue at college or go to university. I then started a few odd jobs to get into the working world before someone at my local Taekwondo club, who works for PWP, suggested I give the sector a go! I was one of two apprentices joining PWP from the club. I wanted to learn something and make a career, whilst also earning a salary. I didn’t know much about the industry as you don’t hear about it at school. I decided to dive straight in and since then I haven’t looked back. I also encouraged my younger brother to follow in my footsteps, and he has now joined PWP and is completing his apprenticeship through Skills for Security.
Can you tell us more about completing your apprenticeship and what has happened since then? I started the Level 2 apprenticeship in July 2016 and completed it in April 2018. I then joined the Level 3 apprenticeship program (part of the FESS Trailblazer) in August 2018 and completed that in December 2020. Since then, I have continued my work at PWP and competed in the Engineers of Tomorrow competition in 2020, finishing 3rd in my heat. The company has rewarded my loyalty and continues to support me, offering me new ways to continue progressing and additional training courses to enhance my knowledge and understanding. I received my company van the year before I qualified, as well as a full set of tools and a company phone. No doubt earning and learning has enabled me to purchase my own house at the age of 21 – before most of my friends had even finished their university studies!
Why has this industry kept your interest? Every day is different and there is so much to learn. I can safely say that I’ve never had a boring day and I enjoy the variety. That’s what grabbed my attention on day one and continues to motivate me now. The diverse disciplines such as Fire, Intruder, CCTV and Access Control and the aspects within each of these including installation, service, commissioning, fault finding, there is just so much to get involved with and learn. Today my role includes many investigations to identify faults and issues, which I find interesting and I enjoy the challenges. I am constantly learning and with technology advancing all the time, there is always something new to learn.
How is technology impacting the life of a young engineer? There is no doubt that as apprentices or young engineers, we have an advantage when it comes to the IT side of the business, especially the use of laptops and phones. We use these every day to complete our testing and to log all our work. Some of our older engineers will have more experience in some ways, but we can complement this with how quickly we can learn and understand new products. It’s created a great mix in our team, and we can support each other to improve what we do every day.

Six new “plug and play” cameras added to the range
Paxton has announced the release of six new cameras to its Paxton10 range. The new CORE series and PRO series cameras maintain all key features of the previous Paxton10 cameras, including edge processing for scalability, built-in edge storage, and a plug-andplay installation. The two new ranges offer different benefits to both Paxton installers and system users. The PRO series range includes a 2.8mm minibullet, vari-focal bullet, and turret. All three 8MP cameras capture footage in 4K HD and feature 256GB in-built memory. The vari-focal bullet is also equipped with a vandal resistant IK10 rating. The CORE series is a solution for sites where hardware cost is a factor and includes a 2.8mm 4MP mini-bullet, mini-dome, and turret. paxton-access.com

CSL has announced the arrival of the new EN54certified DualCom Pro 2 Fire variants, the DigiAir Pro 2 Fire and GradeShift Pro 2 Fire. The new variants enable devices to signal alerts directly to a professional monitoring station 24/7 when the premises is left unattended. DigiAir Pro 2 Fire offers a wireless single-path solution, whilst GradeShift Pro 2 Fire offers dualpath, dual-radio signalling via 2 separate radio modules. Radar offers angle and distance information
The new IMD-2002 is a further development of the Innosent IMD-2000 motion detector. The 24 GHz sensor uses FSK modulation to detect moving objects or people. The radar measures its speed, distance, angle and detects the direction of movement. The detection range is typically 16 m for a person. The sensor's field of view is 90° in azimuth and 48° in elevation. The measurable speed range is between 0.18 and 23.04 km/h. This allows slowly approaching objects to be reliably detected. The size of the product is 30 x 30 x 12.7 mm. The IMD-2002 outputs the measured values as a target list via a UART interface. The radar sensor is ideal for outdoor use and is resistant to poor weather and lighting conditions. Innosent.de

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at a few of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.
Compact PTZ dome boasts fast and easy installation
Low profile mini video intercom is launched The new TMIV-1+ intercom from Zenitel provides video surveillance, two-way communications and remote entry control, in a low-profile size (117 x 117 x 43.5 mm; 4.61 x 4.61 x 1.71 inches). It is aimed at indoor and outdoor use. For video surveillance, the Turbine Mini incorporates HD video up to 1080p resolution and a wide-angle lens that is also NDAA compliant. The ONVIF-conformant solution allows operators and users to see each other in all situations. The new TMIV-1+ also incorporates Zenitel’s high-definition voice technology, with a 10W speaker and amplifier and active-noise cancelling capabilities. Users can clearly hear and communicate with users even in challenging noise conditions. zenitel.com
The new 2MP compact 12x zoom PTZ dome from IDIS, the DC-S6261X-A, delivers image capture even in challenging change and dappled light conditions for real-time monitoring and recording in a range of indoor applications. A key benefit of the new light and compact PTZ dome is fast and easy installation. Engineers do not need to remove the camera bubble, avoiding the risk of dust ingress and image quality compromise. The camera can be quickly attached to a wide choice of mounts with a light-touch push and click technique. A triple safety wire support structure means safe installation and maintenance, while ensuring the camera remains securely fixed to deliver continuous, stable coverage in the event of tremors or when exposed to localised impacts. idisglobal.com

Bringing deep learning AI to enterprise and commercial applications Johnson Controls has announced a new generation of Illustra Pro and Illustra Flex cameras in 2MP, 4MP and 8MP options. The fourth-generation cameras include deep learning AI, up to 4k resolution, and improved low light visibility. Illustra Pro and Illustra Flex fourth-generation cameras will be available as an indoor/outdoor dome or PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom). Additionally, the Illustra Pro line will add a new multisensor camera, which will feature four motorised, individually repositionable varifocal lenses (5 MPx4, 8MP x4) creating 360-degree customisable coverage complemented by deep learning AI classification capability on each individual sensor. The multisensor cameras reportedly reduce cost of deployment by using a single wire to power and connect all four sensors. With built-in AI based object classification, events can be narrowed to classes such as person, car, bus, motorcycle and more. Forensic searches become more accurate and situational awareness more automated with fewer missed incidences and false alarms. The Flex product family cameras feature built-in technology that ensure efficient recording and smart bandwidth management. illustracameras.com

The intercom is powered from either a 12v DC connection (max. 17.6W, 7W typical) or PoE enabled network connection (12.95 W maximum). It is DHCP enabled by default or will be allocated an address of 192.168.1.100. Wisenet Device Manager software can be downloaded from the Hanwha website to quickly discover, initialise the password, change the IP address and access the device’s web server page. Alternatively at first connection using a browser, a ‘strong’ password must be entered and confirmed. This then allows you to sign into the device and the camera image is centrally displayed with a series of control icons below and Live, Playback and Setup icons above. The lower icons are for Snapshot Capture, Record, AVI/Zip, Alarm Output activation, Audio message play & stop, Status information, Video setup, Pixel count, Aspect ratio, and Full screen display. The intercom’s rear mounting plate has four fixing points to secure to a suitable surface and two grommets are provided for cable entry. The main body is clipped onto this mounting plate and secured with a TR20 security Torx screw. Space for the alarm and relay cable termination is restricted and the connectors require a small blade screwdriver of around 2.5mm. A micro-SD card of up to 256GB can be fitted prior to securing the body, for edge event recording; this can be set to Ext4 or VFAT format.
Wisenet TID-600R Intercom
A CVBS 75Ω video output connector is included for installation confirmation of view. This can be browser selected as PAL or NTSC (default). The manual which can be downloaded from the Hanwha website includes details for connecting to a door strike and door release button using the alarm input and relay output connections. If the device is 12 volts powered, then the strike (550mA max. through relay) can be supplied from this source. Alternatively, details are provided for a separate 12 volts supply for the strike. Suitable measures would need to be taken for lock management accessible on the insecure side of any entrance point, however, the device does include a tamper switch and associated event actions can be configured. While browser managed, the intercom is intended to be connected to a suitable IP-PBX, SIP based telephony system or compatible VMS. The specification states that it has been tested with “Cisco, Grandstream, Yealink VoIP phones and Asterisk PBX software”.
Menu options From the Setup Icon on the browser window the Menu page will open with the options to the left-hand side and the configuration details in the main window to the right. The eight main menu options reveal their drop-down contents when selected and appear in the following order: Basic: Video profiles, Users, Date & Time, IP & Ports. Intercom: Call setup, Account, Recipient, DTMF & Tampering switch. Video & Audio: Video, Audio and Camera setup, Smart codec, WiseStream. Network: DDNS, IP filtering, HTTPS, 802.1x, QoS, SNMP, Auto IP configure. Event: Setup, Handover (receiver camera), FTP / Email, Storage, Alarm output and input, Time schedule. detection, IVA, Audio detection, Sound classification. System: Product information details, Firmware upgrade / Restart, Logs. Open platform: Optional third-party app installation. All menu options are clearly laid out with context sensitive help files for each function, these can be individually printed for reference or training purposes or downloaded as a 108-page manual from the Hanwha site. Calls are sent to a single or group of recipients. Video streams can be selected as H.264, H.265 or MJPEG format at resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 and up to 60fps. On-screen text includes the time & date with UK formatting, DST, and NTP options available plus up to five title lines of up to 17 characters (listed as 85 characters in the specification). These can all be individually positioned using x and y coordinates. Motion detection setup is based on up to 8 definable zones or the whole scene. It can be based on included or excluded areas and is supported by a real-time graph of movement for setup. An overlay of detected movement can be enabled. Scheduling allows the intercom to raise an alert if subjects are within the scene out of hours. Analytics setup is straightforward with an event list page for enabling the actions to be undertaken when triggered. These are selected from FTP, E-mail, Record, Alarm OP 1, Alarm OP 2, or Audio Clip as appropriate to the event. Up to 5 WAV format audio clips can be uploaded or recorded from the browser Audio setup page. Most camera settings and analytics can be scheduled to time and day of the week. DTMF codes can be received from telephone systems for door opening (relay control), recording, or audio clip replay, up to 4 digits can be used.
settings to compensate for high backlit scenes and these can be automated to reduce impact in low light or monochrome scenes. Day / Night switching can be automatic or externally triggered with automatic or manual control of the infrared illuminator. In addition to its video analytic capabilities the camera can alert to high noise levels or specific sounds such as Breaking glass, Screaming, Gunshot and Explosion while the Shock feature can detect an attack of the device or its mounting. Replay of recorded images using the browser transport controls is flexible with a scrollable timeline for selecting recorded events. Pre (up to 5 seconds) and post (up to 120 seconds) alarm recording is configurable for internal storage or NAS.
Conclusion This is an impressive SIP 2.0 intercom unit that can be used in a wide range of situations especially in healthcare, where the touch-free method to initiate a call reduces infection risks. The HD camera and its event recording options can provide excellent evidential images.

his video intercom features a 10”touch display boosted by the Axis ARTPEC-7 processor, full-HD camera and WaveKey technology. The unit is rated IP65 and IK08, meaning that users can touch the display even if there is any water on its surface.
Getting started
What’s in the box? Intercom unit Allen keys Manual Certificate of Ownership
The brief manual supplied is primarily technical information for the unit, but on the website there are multiple installation and set up manuals for the system. Though the website is not massively mobile friendly, it is manageable to get the information required. Installation is made easy with their patented tilt bracket design that allows the rear bracket to be mounted and the unit to be easily slid on, freeing up both hands during installation. This being said – do not throw away the box! The inside lid of the box contains the mounting guide, without it, new users to this product will find it troublesome to remove the main unit. For unit configuration, this takes place typically via a web interface. Alternatively, configuration is possible using the 2N Access Commander software or the My2N service. Basic set up is fairly straight forward, once powered on using its POE connection located on the rear of the unit, it is pretty much ready to go.
Performance Like other access and door entry systems, the
PROS: • Elegant • Fantastic 5MP multi-steam camera functionality • WDR and IR functions on the door station • Easy set up and customisable options • 2N MobileKey functionality Cons: • Expensive for low end applications • Confusing bracket mount • Website for user manuals are not overly mobile friendly 20
2N – IP Style 2N is programmable with RFID and Code authentication, but 2N do one better through the use of 2N mobile Key, which is an authentication mode allowing users to operate the door switching using their mobile device. It can work either by: • Touch mode – press or drag the Bluetooth symbol from left to right on the display (depending on the Bluetooth authentication setting) to activate the switch. • Tap in app mode – unlock your smartphone, open the app and press the virtual button to activate the switch. • Motion mode – motion has to be detected by the intercom camera to activate the switch. Arrival in the proximity or waving of the hand will do. • Card mode – move your smartphone close to the integrated RFID card reader to activate the switch. This 2N mobile key function provided access in 1–2 seconds during testing which is very fast compared to others available on the market. The product is fitted with an Axis ARTPEC 7 processor that provides phenomenal power. It allows the 2N unit’s camera to compete with most outdoor IP cameras by leading manufacturers, it can handle multiple simultaneous HD Streams with its 5MP chip, high video quality at night utilising its IR functionality, and an impressive WDR function meaning that heavy light exposure for this unit does not pose much of a problem. One feature that cannot be missed with this product is the screen brightness. The high resolution and clarity provided by the display even in direct sunlight was impressive to see.
Conclusion The 2N unit is easily customisable depending on the project, with ability to customise each resident if used in a domestic setting, and importing business logos and grouping for businesses in a commercial setting – a very elegant solution and great addition to the outside of any building.

Performance
he NWA90AX is aimed at SMB users looking to upgrade to 11ax (WiFi 6) access points without an expensive price tag. Supporting both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies, the AP is provide all the benefits of WiFi 6 such as faster speeds even when congested or in high-density environments, expanded range in a wireless network, and increased capacity for IoT deployments.
This access point promises a maximum throughput of 1775Mbps, which for the price range, is difficult to beat. NWA90AX supports up to 8 SIDs, assisted roaming, Bridge mode, Layer 2 isolation, Cloud authentication and Enterprise WPA2/WPA3 logins, making this product very adaptable and configurable to suit any needs. The NWA90AX is WiFi 6 ready and performs accordingly – assuming the devices you are using are WiFi 6 compatible. The limiting factor about this product is the 1Gbit LAN port that will limit the throughput of the unit from 1775Mbps to 1000Mbps which could pose a problem for commercial applications on a larger scale. It would have been great to see this unit fitted with a 2.5Gbit LAN port, but looking at the product range, this is reserved for the more expensive models.
Getting started
Conclusion
The installation for the unit is minimal, all it requires is power and a connection to your network. If you are using a local power setup, then you will require the 12vdc 1.5A inline PSU to be connected, but if you are able to utilise a POE connection – either through a POE injector or POE switch – installation will be all the easier. Getting this device functioning is easy as Zyxel have created a mobile application to register the device onto the management solution by scanning its QR Code. This being said, for users new to Zyxel, the set up can be confusing as the application assumes that you already have a user account, and the overall order of registration looks wrong for those unfamiliar with there products.
For the price, the enterprise functions available on this unit are impressive. That combined with free access to their standard Nebular cloud management software makes this a very worthwhile investment. There are subscription plans available for the Nebular could manager giving access to a VPN firewall, Enhanced security functions, Live feedback, content filtering and geofencing for a small fee. The NWA90AX is well suited for domestic and small - medium commercial applications, specifically for those users requiring some ability of network management, enterprise features and layer 2 isolation and cloud portal logins. If these features are not as important, and you are looking for an even more affordable WiFi 6 solution for a home or business, then the cheaper Zyxel NWA50AX may be better suited.

INTERVIEW
A smarter approach to keys This month we spoke to Simon Wilson, Business Development Manager CLIQ® and Henrik Degn, Business Development Manager PULSE® of Assa Abloy Opening Solutions EMEIA about the technology and benefits of using smart keys for installers and their customers onsidering that one of the major trends we have heard widely predicted since the Covid-19 pandemic began is that access control will go contactless and smartphones will be the keys of the future, why are the vast majority of us still using traditional keys for our own properties? This was a question we decided to broach with Simon Wilson and Henrik Degn who are the people behind Assa Abloy’s smart digital key-based access solutions CLIQ and PULSE.
C
After lockdown we heard that access control will go contactless, so why have we got CLIQ and PULSE? SW: The physical key has been in use for thousands of years and I strongly believe it will continue to be used in the future because it is human nature when it comes to security to want to feel something physical and to have that physical connection to open a door. In many projects we see a transformation from mechanical towards electronic locking as customers want to benefit from flexible access
management. Smart key-based access control solutions can help companies to offer a safer work environment with flexible access management using a known technology. You could say that the engineering of security hardware hasn't quite matched the speed of innovation we've seen for mobile phones. However for me, holding a physical key can give you a connection and more of a comforting sense of security. For years, we have keys on homes, suitcases, lockers, safes etc and the key itself is built into our mind as an element of security and safety. Perhaps there could be still more of a level of trust for the reliability of a lock which opens and closes using a key over one that uses another method. Keys and cylinders are simple solutions, how easy is it to set up smart keys? HD: To be honest, it’s just plug and play. The installation of PULSE energy-harvesting cylinders itself is very simple as no drilling or cabling is needed. The programmable smart key generates the energy for data transfer via Simon Wilson and Henrik Degn talking to PSI in April22

energy-harvesting technology, no batteries are needed. The system management is done via the cloud-based Incedo access management solution. An RFID-chip in the key also allows us to operate other RFID enabled access hardware in the system. SW: From a CLIQ perspective, it´s also simple too for the installer as no cabling or drilling is required. Energy comes from a standard battery in the key. CLIQ access management can be done via a web-based, cloud system or local installed software. In physical terms, when the installer visits a site that already has mechanical locks in place, all they need do is remove the retaining screw, take out the old cylinder, put in the new one and replace the screw. The owner of the system then uses the administration hardware linked to any device, keys and cylinders to manage the system. For the installer it takes only minutes to set up the hardware and admin functions in the background.
simply block it from the system and that key cannot be used to open the lock. With a mechanical master-key system, normally you would have to either take a risk on the key not being used maliciously or replace the cylinder and reissue new keys. With smart keys you just block the lost key and reissue a new one. Within a few seconds the system administrator/owner can run a key audit and know exactly where all of the keys are that have access to the system. So this means that if a key is lost, complete security of the system can be assured within minutes. SW: For me, the benefit of smart keys is that you can give the customer complete confidence in their key management compared to not knowing how many keys there are out there, where they are and who has them. Access control is all about the movement and management of people and smart keys make this really easy for all parties.
What types of applications are we talking about here? SW: Key-based access control can bring access control capabilities beyond doors. Different cylinder types can be installed at elevators, machines, furniture or cabinets and padlocks for gates or fences. Both CLIQ and PULSE can be used in virtually any situation including high or low security applications. The solutions are trusted in several industries, e.g. the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham relies on CLIQ.
So what is the future for smart keys and security? SW: Keys will continue to evolve and become smarter. Thousands of years ago they were made of wood, 100 years ago they were made of metal and ten years ago they went electronic and for some smart keys there is now no keycutting required at all. We have a number of developments in the pipeline, so keys might be considered a traditional method of access control but how the access is granted with a modern system is far beyond just the physical properties or design of the key. For example the RFID chip in the Pulse key to operate RFID readers or the Bluetooth in the CLIQ Connect key for communicating with the smartphone app.
What are the features of the software running behind smart keys? HD: The management software gives you total control over the access rights, the keys and building users. If someone loses a key you 26

together raising standards
Meet the installer What would be a typical project for you? A typical project for BWG would normally consist of a number of systems be it intruder, access, CCTV, ANPR or fire integrated to a front end or PSIM. We install a lot of high end solutions and products which have been tried and tested but the main factor is wherever possible the systems we provide will have remote connectivity and connected to our ARC (RMS). Our service offering is all about being proactive we want to provide world class service and what I mean by that is we want to know about a failure on our clients site before they do and more importantly we want the ability to diagnose and where possible fix the problem remotely. On average we diagnose and repair 71% of failures remotely and this is increasing every time one of our legacy systems is connected through to us. This is the area we really thrive in as a business and if you were to contact any of our “connected” clients I am sure they would say the same. We have invested and built a robust aftercare service which I would honestly say is one of the best in the industry right now. Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers? We install a lot of Mirasys and Avigilon servers, and a lot of Avigilon and Axis cameras on CCTV. However the beauty of the Mirasys is you can pretty much pick and choose any ONVIF camera so a lot of our sites have a real mixture of manufacturer cameras based on their functionality, performance and client’s budget. With regards to intruder alarms we install Texecom and Galaxy for our commercial clients and Orisec and Ajax for our domestic clients. Again the reasoning behind these choices is purely down to the connectivity and what we can do via the software available. Access control all depends on the integration its normally Paxton, RBH or Brivo again its all dependant on the client’s requirements.
Security life with Matthew Tolkien of BusinessWatch Group Name: Matthew Tolkien Job title: Managing Director Time in security/fire: 21 years Company: BusinessWatch Group Location: UK wide with offices in Leeds and Peterborough Areas of expertise: Integrated technology solutions including all fire and security systems and remote monitoring/managed services Accreditation: NSI Gold, NSI Gold Cat2 ARC, BAFE, Constructionline Gold, Cyber Essentials
We are a Fireclass partner so use this where possible but again depending on client requirements, and the solution and what it is we are protecting we would be happy to install any open protocol solution. What is the best thing about working in this industry? The diversity, each day is different. I used to love it when I was on the road in sales as one minute you could be in a high rise block of flats surveying a new fire system and the next meeting you could be surveying for CCTV in a manufacturing site to help with internal theft and or health and safety. The other good thing about the industry is its people. I’ve met some great people and characters throughout my career and some which will be friends for life. Is third party accreditation beneficial to you? Absolutely, we are NSI gold company and our ARC is NSI gold category 2 which is really

important for a lot our clients due to their insurance requirements. We also carry Cyber Security, Safecontractor and Constructionline Gold. Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting? There is definitely a skills/engineering shortage in the UK unfortunately in the past we have recruited badly and have suffered the consequences we are now starting to recruit on attitude and are fortunate to have an in-house training programme that all new starters go through which is conducted by our trainer Jolene Taylor. We have a full training matrix and skill set pay structure that the engineers know and more importantly they know what they need to achieve to increase to the highest pay grade. The other thing we are passionate about is apprenticeship programmes the four apprentices we had have now become service/install engineers and we will be reigniting the apprenticeship programme now restrictions are starting to lift. We are hoping to have our training and apprentice academy up and running by the end of the year. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Great question, but I have to honestly say not really. When a client comes to us with a request or problem we will do our upmost to fulfil it where possible, some examples of that which we have implemented is: • Customer portal so clients can see any outstanding PPM’s and reactive visits, they can see their spend if we are hitting our SLAs and common parts used on their sites all this is totally transparent. • SMS text messaging when an engineer is on route this was a request due to our domestic division, our clients don’t want to wait in all day for a an engineer.
“We are always looking at new technology to see if we can improve our processes and procedures to enhance our customer experience”
• Clients complain about turn around of quotes, we developed an app so that the engineers can complete a survey and quote there and then whilst on site. We are always looking at new technology to see if we can improve our processes and procedures to enhance our customer experience. What is the security/fire industry’s biggest myth? Struggling to think of one, but perhaps every time we recruit a salesperson they will bring £2m of orders with them! What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? Its not had a massive impact as yet purely down to our client base but within our domestic division Homewatch I know Kristian who heads it up is testing some new products and we have recently become a control4 partner. We know this is where the industry is heading especially now prices are reducing with more manufacturers having it in their portfolio. It used to be mainly high net worth individuals and tech geeks that had it but now it’s readily available so we will be investing in our team to make sure they’re fully trained for when the opportunity arises. What would make your job easier? Being an MD and reporting into shareholders can be challenging at times especially if targets aren’t met for whatever reason so the drive in the business at the moment is looking at processes and procedures and build a recurring revenue base so it covers our overhead, I think that’s every MD and business owners goal. Once we have achieved our goal my life will become easier as we will not be reliant on install revenue targets each month. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? Any product that we can sell for a high margin! What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? Do well at school as it opens up more opportunities for you in life and when you’re earning always put a little money a side each month as you never know when you may need it. Will England ever win the World Cup again? This year hopefully! Come on England... If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? I’ve been after a T5/6 campervan for a while so I would probably treat myself to one so the family and I can go off exploring whenever we wanted too. The wife would say otherwise and want to keep it in savings!!

EVENTS the future, secured Two new UK events for 2022 from PSI and Skills for Security seek to promote careers in the sector, raise product awareness and encourage personal development Next Generation events reflect the two sides of the security and fire installation trade: the next generation of talent we need to bring into the industry and the next generation technology available to them. The two-day events will comprise a day of presentations held under the guidance of fire and security apprenticeship provider Skills for Security and include a programme of in-depth technology installation and application demonstrations and a table-top exhibition area featuring key manufacturers, service providers and recruitment companies. This will be followed by a networking dinner in the evening and a golf day on the second day in which players will compete for the IFSEC Cup. SKILLS
The value of upskilling staff Here David Scott of Skills for Security outlines the different services that the organisation can provide for all security company employees
S
kills for Security are the largest fire and security apprenticeship provider in the UK, with over 400 apprentices enrolled on its programmes. We are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BSIA and have training bases in Warrington, Oxford and Birmingham and Southport. Skills for Security have aspirations of raising the standard in the sector by providing high quality education, making training more accessible and raising awareness. As the leading apprenticeship provider in the sector, Skills for Security are continually looking for ways to expand our reach and provide the very best, up to date training not only to learners, but also our employees. Ensuring our staff are well trained aids in our retention efforts as it allows us to encourage professional growth amongst our staff and showing how we value each team member.
Apprenticeships We often speak about how we can upskill engineers, but how do we upskill the back office staff? Furthermore, once engineers are qualified how do we continue their development to help retain staff and have a higher quality person employed. These are just a few of the potential most popular apprenticeships available to you, for free. The Team Leader/Supervisor apprenticeship is perfect for those members of staff whose responsibilities include managing teams or for those who are looking to move into this type of job role. The Team Leader/Supervisor apprenticeship can be specifically tailored to the security industry, making it highly cost-effective. Security First Line Manager training programme provides an upskilling opportunity
The Team Leader/Supervisor apprenticeship is perfect for those members of staff whose responsibilities include managing teams or for those who are looking to move into this type of job role that can support career progression within the industry. It’s ideal for those who work cooperatively with others in a security environment such as Private Security Industry, MOD, Event Security, ‘In –house’ security, Department for Transport and will provide a vocational route to a career in Security Management (excluding close protection). The Customer Service apprenticeship is ideal for those who work in roles that involve dealing with members of the public. This could include those who work in manned guarding or contact centre positions, for example. The Customer Service apprenticeship can also be specifically tailored to the security industry, again making it highly cost-effective.
YOUR SKILLS QUESTIONS ANSWERED As part of this column you can ask David questions directly about training and apprenticeships. We will aim, to publish the question and answer in the next column. If you want to participate in this, then email info@skillsforsecurity.org.uk
Do you get involved with any events in the industry? Yes, we are working alongside the team at PSI to host the PSI & Skills for Security Next Generation Event as well as being involved in the annual IFSEC International event. www.skills4security.com/events

SKILLS
(continued from p47)
The Business Admin qualification is aimed at learners working within a business and administration role who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in a variety of work environments and sectors. It forms the knowledge and competency requirements of the Intermediate Apprenticeship Framework in Business Administration.
Commercial
The Intruder Alarm Survey and Design course teaches learners about everything from the importance of surveying sites and designing a compliant intruder alarm system, to ensuring customer and site requirements are properly documented 48
If time is an issue or an apprenticeship isn’t for you, there are a number of technical CPD accredited qualifications available. We believe in the importance of upskilling Engineers, Staff and Apprentices through accredited online CPD training. Since requirements to obtain an ECS Card have changed, you are now required to complete an ECS Fire Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) multiple-choice assessment and ECS H&S assessment to achieve the card. To support this Skills for Security offer a one-day online training course that aims to upskill engineers so they are ready to take the online multiple-choice FESS assessment. Our Survey and Design of Fire Alarm Systems course teaches learners about the role of a fire risk assessor and competency in fire risk assessments, as well as the design, installation, maintenance standards and design classification for fire alarm systems, including the relevant standards for audible and visual warning devices. The Intruder Alarm Survey and Design course teaches learners about everything from the importance of surveying sites and designing a compliant intruder alarm system, to ensuring customer and site requirements are properly documented, and how to identify the correct equipment to comply with system grading for both intruder alarm installations and signalling. Survey and Design of VSS is about risk assessments: how they help you design systems, the importance of site surveys and the purpose of grading. Get information on the key areas of system design and learn what documentation should be included within your design proposal.
A new course at Skills for Security is Ladder Awareness. This course is intended for all those working at height, their managers and supervisors. Falls from height are the single biggest cause of accidental death at work. Many fatal accidents involve relatively low heights, and ladders are particularly dangerous if not used correctly. The HSE have expressed particular concern about some sectors, including Facilities Management, Caretaking, Maintenance, and Transport & Distribution. The Work at Height Regulations require employers to avoid the need to work at height wherever possible, and to take measures to prevent falls and minimise harm where such work cannot be avoided. Our Manual Handling qualification is an introduction to moving and handling activities for those starting work, returning to work or who need specific training in manual handling, as well as being a suitable qualification for refresher training. Learners gaining this qualification will understand that moving and handling must be carried out correctly and will recognise its importance in ensuring a safer working environment. Subjects covered include the reasons for safe manual handling, manual handling risk assessments principles, types of equipment and testing requirements associated with manual handling safety.Skills for Security also offer a Health and safety in construction course. This qualification is designed for learners working in, or aspiring to work in the construction industry. Its objective is to prepare learners for employment in construction, giving learners the knowledge required to undertake their jobs safely. Successful learners who also complete the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment knowledge test can apply for the CSCS Labourer’s card.

SECURITY
Cybersecurity and vendors Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe, reveals the cybersecurity ‘trust marks’ to look for in your chosen vendors ecent events have renewed the focus on cybersecurity for all organisations. Criminals sought to cash in on the impact of the pandemic and mass remote working at home. In Europe, there were 304 significant malicious attacks in 2020, more than double the number of hacks in 2019. Then there’s the increased risk of cyberwarfare in the wake of the Russian-Ukraine war. John Edwards, the UK’s information commissioner has stated that we are in a new era of security and firms need to step up their vigilance against state-sponsored hackers.
R
Cameras are a target Simultaneously, the increased use of connected devices including IP cameras and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, is creating more opportunities for hackers to cause damage. Today’s cameras are extremely advanced and carry the latest firmware. However, legacy devices must be kept up to date if they are to not provide a route in for hackers. The unfortunate truth remains that although many organisations invest in their physical security systems, they don’t always realise that their video surveillance and IoT devices can be back doors exploited by malicious actors.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Compromised cameras and other connected devices can become a foothold to launch an attack on a network, a technique known as pivoting. Malicious actors can also look at confidential information through footage, using this to blackmail an individual or organisation or steal trade secrets. Responsible camera manufacturers are tackling these concerns head-on through their technology (software and hardware), training, collaboration with customers, and formal accreditations that highlight the security of their processes and solutions. Looking for a few key ‘trust marks’ can make all the difference to your surveillance system’s cybersecurity.
Compromised cameras and other connected devices can become a foothold to launch an attack on a network, a technique known as pivoting
NDAA compliance The National Defense Authorization Act 2019 (NDAA) is a good starting point. This U.S federal law prohibits federal agencies and their contractors from using video surveillance equipment from a number of named companies. A vendor that is NDAA compliant, therefore, shows the requisite standards for federal agencies — an extremely high level of security and due diligence that should put all other organisations and government entities at ease. 51

SECURITY
(continued from page 51)
The most secure vendors educate their extended network, such as their users and installers to ensure software and hardware are constantly upgraded
Hanwha Techwin supports NDAA compliance across its product line and is committed to complying with all government and international trade regulations. There are also signs that European governments are thinking of adopting similar legislation.
Core to product design A supplier who designs their products with cybersecurity in mind will have certifications like the UL Cybersecurity Assurance Program (UL CAP). They will have more stable and secure systems, with regular maintenance and patches to ensure vulnerabilities are proactively mitigated. Secure by Default is another certification mark that shows a product is cyber and network-secure by default, without needing to apply network hardening to it. You should also look for ISO 27001 certification — which is tough for vendors to achieve and maintain, with its requirement for continual improvement. It gives a guarantee that the vendor handles information security with the utmost importance.
Emergency response The number of resources and research that a vendor dedicates to staying ahead of the latest threats will tell you exactly how secure their camera systems are — and how secure they’ll be in the future. If a vulnerability is discovered, reacting with speed is business-critical. Those with dedicated resources will be faster in responding to cybersecurity threats. Hanwha Techwin’s S-CERT team (Security Vulnerability Response Center) is dedicated to designing proactive safeguards against unauthorised device access and intrusion, as well as promptly addressing any security vulnerabilities.

Cybersecurity education The most secure vendors educate their extended network, such as their users and installers to ensure software and hardware are constantly upgraded to combat emerging threats. All hardware needs to remain up-todate with the latest firmware and security patches. The human element can also be exploited and responsible suppliers will provide training and practical guidance on how to keep a system secure and avoid social engineering attacks like phishing.
The consequences The stakes are high for all organisations dealing with data, particularly the kind of sensitive, personally identifiable data that cameras and other sensors can capture. The financial costs of a data breach are significant ($4.24 million on average, per breach, in 2021 — the highest in 17 years). There’s also the damage to reputation, operations, and trust to consider. As Stephane Nappo, the Chief Information Security Officer of Société Générale once said “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and a few minutes of cyberincident to ruin it.” That’s why it’s imperative to work with a supplier that has a singular dedication to cybersecurity (with the credentials to prove it), earmarked resources to remain on top of threats, and that works with its users and installers to improve their cybersecurity knowledge as well. With IP cameras now the norm, the video surveillance industry must do more to combat cyber-threats through technology, skills and certifications. But many are struggling to get ahead of this.

Tallest building in the EU opts for mobile access solution The HID Mobile Access solution and mobileenabled readers have been installed in Varso Place, the site of the tallest skyscraper in the European Union, which allows more than 7,000 people to move more freely and securely throughout the building. Located in Warsaw, Poland, Varso Place is HB Reavis’ latest development and comprises three buildings in a 144,000 square metre area. Due to the size and scope of the project, HB Reavis sought a single access system for the entire building so that every tenant would have a simple, easy-to-use, one-stop solution for security management. It wanted to move away from tenants having to use a traditional keyfob or card-based solution and rather implement a system that also allows for the management of digital credentials using smartphones as a primary form factor. The solution of choice included HID Mobile Access and mobile-enabled readers from HID Global which are equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies, as well as a Software Development Kit (SDK) that integrates with HB Reavis’ More App. The app covers all building services from concierge services, events, room booking systems, car or bike sharing and, of course, easy access when people enter and exit and move around. As the SDK can be developed and upgraded over time as requirements change, HB Reavis is able to maximise the
long-term benefit of mobile security. The mobile, contactless solution – which supports Android and iOS-based smartphones - has been particularly beneficial during the COVID-19 pandemic as it minimises surface contact and the human-tohuman interaction that is typical when issuing and managing physical cards and keyfobs. “Not only does Mobile Access provide security control, there is no need to remember to take a pass with you when you leave home or move around the building. When security is based on the phone, it is frictionless because people always have their phones with them,” said Jakub Kacer, Security Manager at HB Reavis.

Faelsafe benefits from adopting cloud-based business platform Faelsafe Life Safety has transformed its business using BigChange field service management software. Since implementing the cloud-based platform, Faelsafe has reduced its administrative resource, eliminated paper from its mobile operation and improved the efficiency of engineers working across mainland UK. Andrew Hutchinson, Director of Faelsafe said: “Despite having job management software, we were still producing paper worksheets and reports, in triplicate, and having to wait for engineers to return to base before we could process them. This was labour intensive, resulted in delays in invoicing and meant dealing with customer queries was virtually impossible. “Since implementing BigChange we have slashed our administrative resource, we have removed every filing cabinet from the office, eliminated delays in invoicing and query resolutions and improved the efficiency of our engineers.” Headquartered in Leeds, Faelsafe made the move to BigChange following a recommendation from its IT support company. The complete job management solution, which incorporates customer relationship management (CRM), job scheduling, live tracking, field resource
Digital public address system improves shopper safety
Bosch Building Technologies has installed a digital public address and voice alarm system at Telford Shopping Centre. On 25 acres of commercial space, the IP-based Praesensa system from Bosch now provides music, announcements, and emergency alerts for retail stores, restaurants, as well as hotels and a cinema. The shopping mall operator was looking to upgrade the existing public address system with a future-proof and IP-networked solution for retail environments. Bosch partner North AVS refurbished all existing loudspeakers installed at Telford Centre across 16 zones via minor modifications on the end lines. As a result, system integrators merely needed to replace the obsolete control equipment – including a cumbersome call station with analogue buttons – and amplifiers. Since the upgrade, security staff at Telford Shopping Centre now control the public address system via a touch screen interface. Managed via OMNEO media networking technology, the software-based system combines live broadcasts and recordings from various media sources. The library includes background music in MP3 format, commercials from a message database, plus end-of-day mall closing messages on automated schedules. Automation also kicks in during an emergency, for instance in case of a fire: targeted to specific zones on the property, the public address system integrates with the fire alarm system to play pre-recorded alerts and

evacuation messages. Leaving full control to security, personnel can send live voice messages and manually trigger the evacuation protocol as needed at any time. Praesensa also delivers automated fault notification to the control desk within 100 seconds, thereby meeting EN54-16 standards for public address systems. Chris Titley, Facilities Manager, Savills said: “We are extremely happy with the quality and operation of the new Bosch equipment and the team are finding the system easy to use. It´s of paramount importance to have a reliable system and this is definitely ticking all the boxes.”

ngineers of Tomorrow helps to raise the profile of engineering apprenticeships and the opportunities they represent within the sector. Taking place at IFSEC and FIREX International each year, winners of regional heats compete in a live installation challenge at the show. The process involves two separate competitions – one for electronic security systems, and the other for fire systems. The winners of Engineers of Tomorrow will then proceed to the esteemed WorldSkills UK (WSUK) LIVE competition – the nation’s premier skills, apprenticeships and careers event. For the first time this year, both the electronic security and fire competitions will be represented at WSUK – underlining the value of both competitions to the wider UK skills industry. The competition aims to help tackle the growing engineering skills gap and attract and retain the next generation of security and fire systems installers. While the 2020 competition was unfortunately unable to go ahead, due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, 2021’s competition saw a record number of entries take part, despite the challenges and restrictions of the global pandemic.
The 2022 competition The Engineers of Tomorrow finals return to the IFSEC and FIREX show floor on 17-19 May at London’s ExCeL this year. Apprentice finalists will get the chance to show off their skills in front of thousands of peers and professionals from the security and fire sectors.
David Scott, Managing Director at Skills for Security, explains: “We’re thrilled to get back to the live event this year, where Engineers of Tomorrow finalists can compete in front of their own industry, and showcase the talent that we know, as training providers, they demonstrate on a weekly basis.” “In addition, to have both security and fire competitions represented at WSUK this year is another fantastic result for the event and industry. WSUK gives opportunity to shine a positive light on the security and fire engineering sector as a career of choice, attracting new young talent into the industry. It puts the industry on a pedestal alongside the Navy, BAE, NHS and other major sectors and showcases the industry as a fun, technologydriven industry where learning never stops.” Stakeholders involved in supporting and contributing to the IFSEC and FIREX Engineers of Tomorrow competition are Skills for Security, CSL, NSI, SSAIB, and Texecom Academy, while additional support comes from the BSIA and BAFE. In addition, several manufacturers have demonstrated their own commitment to the event. As part of a three-year commitment, Hikvision, Texecom and CSL all donate equipment to be used in the heats, whilst Advanced and Apollo Fire Detectors – both part of the Halma Group – donate products for the fire competition.
