It’s not over yet... By the time you read this the Covid situation in the UK could be entirely different from how it is at the time of going to press, but no matter how we are doing healthwise, the security industry has changed this year

t wasn’t so long back that we were getting the feeling that we were coming to the end of the Covid nightmare of 2020. The bell had been flattened and the lockdown felt more or less over for most of us. We still had face masks and social distancing to deal with, but that was no hardship compared to the conditions that previous generations went through during other national crises such as the Blitz, the plague or England’s disastrous 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign. We had all come to terms with the ‘new normal’ which involved some odd behaviour in shops, pubs and restaurants and looking at empty sports arenas on the telly, but on the whole everything to do with health was seemingly heading in the right direction just before another annual winter of flu epidemics hit. Writing this now, the picture has got worse again - it’s especially grim for those in the North. But for the security industry 2020 will be remembered for how we coped during the pandemic and how adapted technology changed the sector. On the down side in some cases we’re still awaiting the end result of the lockdown. Take for example the lack of trade shows. Should the next IFSEC go ahead on the planned dates in May 2021 it will have been 23 months between shows and it will be two years between dates for The Security Event. That is a long time for organisers to go without income and there are plenty of other trade shows in the same boat too. This is a great shame because healthy trade shows and everything that goes on around them are vital for a buoyant industry. On the other hand the pandemic has led us to recognise that the often spoken about use of security systems for non-security applications was not a marketing message after all. Some manufacturers realised that reassigning already existing technology for “Covid-safe” use or developing new systems was piquing interest especially among those in charge of getting offices open again. Whether there is any long term use for thermal monitoring of personnel with cameras remains to be seen, but non-contact access control and occupancy analytics have likely staked a good claim for continued use going forward. We’ve also got used to holding meetings online and working from home, which is good news for keeping petrol costs down, but may be not so good for area sales reps wanting to get out to visit customers and demo kit. You suspect that the true costs and impact of 2020 on the industry will not be known for some time especially the longer the situation goes on for. They thought it was all over - it’s not yet. INDUSTRY NEWS
Kings Secure Technologies to acquire Silver Group Kings Secure Technologies (KST) has announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Luton-based supplier of fire safety systems, smoke ventilation and security technology solutions, Silver (UK) T/A Silver Group.
Evacuation Alert Systems Scheme success reported The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) has been awarded accreditation by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for its Evacuation Alert Systems Scheme, incorporating the requirements of BAFE’s new Scheme SP207. BAFE has developed the new scheme in response to a recommendation from the Grenfell Tower Phase 1 inquiry report whereby new or existing blocks of flats, with one or more storeys over 18m above ground level, should be provided with evacuation alert systems. Bob Forsyth, Chief Executive Officer of Kings Secure Technologies stated that KST has been in the fire and security sector for over 50 years: “This combination has tremendous benefits for both companies, our customers, and the industry. Our exciting plans for the future will give us the capacity to compete in the world of fire and security solutions at pace and scale.” Silver Group will remain headquartered in Luton, Bedfordshire with Mario Vaianella as Business Lead. Commenting on the acquisition Mario said: “We look forward to building even better services in the future for our customers, with the backing of Kings’ resources and reach. Moving forward, we expect to combine our core strengths with Kings’ deep industry expertise in verticals like financial services, utilities, public sector and datacentres. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sergio De Michele for the fantastic business that he has built over the last 15 years and to wish him every success for the future.” KST was advised on the acquisition by Squire Patton Boggs’ Leeds Office, led by Senior Associate, Louise Parker and Partner, Paul Mann. systems activated solely by the fire and rescue services initiate evacuation alert signals in the event of a fire or other emergency, save time in alerting occupants to evacuate, and enable the most critical areas for evacuation to be prioritised. Similar to an “MOT”, NSI approved companies will issue an NSI/BAFE “Certificate of Compliance” for newly installed systems and on completion of scheduled maintenance visits (every six months), as evidence to enforcing authorities and insurers that systems are adequately installed and maintained. BAFE Scheme SP207 calls upon BS 8629, the ‘Code of Practice for the Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Evacuation Alert Systems for use by fire and rescue services in buildings containing flats’ published on 30 November 2019. As the scheme is modular, companies can gain certification from NSI for one or more services they provide i.e. design, installation, commissioning and/or maintenance.

Fireco is celebrating selling its one millionth Dorgard, a product which holds doors open and then automatically closes when it hears a fire alarm. The door retainer was designed to replace door wedges, which keep doors open but fail to protect the premises or people inside
NSI Gold award success for Frocester Group Frocester Group has announced that is has met the NSI Gold standard for security and fire system design, installation, and maintenance. The award represents months of hard work by the Fire and Security teams. Frocester Group Security Director, Tom Allerton, says: “We are very proud of the whole team to have achieved this landmark and proud to give our customers the assurances this brings. This award will help Frocester Group continue to grow and provide satisfaction and confidence for our customers.” The award will sit along-side the Safe Contractor approved status for the Frocester Security and Fire divisions. in case of fire. Now the invention has generated new interest as businesses look to find safe ways to keep doors open so that staff no longer need to touch doorknobs or handles, spreading germs in the process. Fireco founder Neil Purssey originally dreamt up Dorgard 25 years ago after watching a ‘dancing daisy’ which would dance when there was a sound near it. This got him thinking – what other items would be useful if they were sound activated? Since then Fireco has designed and released another eight products in its range, with more to come. Chief Executive Officer Michelle Bussey said: “The last six months have been challenging for businesses across the country, so we feel extremely grateful that we have something so positive to celebrate. We are proud to say we have supplied our Millionth Dorgard unit. When COVID-19 hit our business we recognised the huge importance of Dorgard not only as a fire safety product but as a product that can assist with a premises germ control strategy.”

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L
The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Ben Linklater, Sales Director at OPTEX, a world-leading manufacturer of high-performance sensing technologies.
Dahua enters partnership with Celtic Football Club to supply video technology Dahua Technology has entered into a six-figure sponsorship deal with Celtic FC, supplying the club with video-based technology and equipment. Under the sponsorship deal, Dahua is supplying video walls for locations such as the Celtic Store and Media Centre at Celtic Park, quad-rotor drones to help with player training and development, and electronic whiteboards to be used for staff training, as well as meetings and presentations for staff and visitors. As part of the new partnership, Dahua will be appearing across a range of Club assets, on LED pitch-side banners, and on the club’s website and match programmes. The deal represents the first major sponsorship by Dahua Technology in the UK and Ireland.
Oprema announces partnership with Vimpex Oprema has announced a new partnership with Vimpex, the manufacturer and distributor of fire evacuation and alarm system products. James Jones, Managing Director of Vimpex commented on the partnership: “Our fire alarm bells, Identifire system accessories range, SmartGuard call point protectors, sounders, power supplies, as well as our linear heat cable will all be available for immediate delivery to Oprema customers. We are really pleased to partner with Oprema and look forward to many years of successful business with them”. Ross Hawkins, Operations Director at Oprema commented, “Oprema are thrilled to have partnered with Vimpex. Their extensive product range will be an asset to our portfolio and allow us to extend the service we provide to our customers. We look forward to what the future holds with Vimpex on board.”
What are the latest developments in the world of detection systems? Detection systems, as with many other technologies, benefit from the progress made in digital microprocessors and analytics. While our sensors have always had a great level of reliability, they are now getting even more intelligent, using powerful algorithms to classify information and recognise patterns. Another development is the ability for detection systems to be part of an IP network and use communication protocols that are secure and interoperable with management software platforms. Interoperability is particularly important when linking sensors with video systems to provide an event-driven visual verification. Whilst it is common to connect detection sensors to remotely monitored CCTV systems to drive PTZ cameras, it is still relatively rare to see traditional monitored alarm systems being linked to video devices. It is, though, of great benefit to ARCs to be able to visually verify events and avoid dispatching keyholders or the police if there is no real threat. How important is reliable connectivity? Connectivity is fundamental for any security system. How can it be monitored if there is no alarm communication? This is why it is critical that systems are designed in such a way that any loss of connectivity is notified. It is also very important to consider the security of the connection. The vulnerability of a security system usually lies in the lack of secure data transmission. This is where solutions like the CSL Router are vital for installations. As it provides a secure VPN, Installers can be confident in the integrity of the connection. Should the OPTEX system (the Bridge) lose its primary connection, the 4G router steps in, always keeping the solution online. As a manufacturer, we know how important it is to work together with Installers to give them the right information and options to design systems which are suited for the level of security required and the threat faced. As Chairman of the BSIA’s Video Surveillance Systems Section, can you outline what the industry association is doing currently to support Installers? I am now in my second year of chairing the Section and I have found it an exhilarating experience. It is a fast evolving subject, in an environment which keeps throwing new challenges at us. One of the topics we are working on is the implication of Brexit on British Standards. This is a wide subject, looking on one hand at which standards to follow for security installations in the UK, but also how British manufacturers should handle standards in the future to be able to export compliant goods and systems to the EU. Our Section is also currently working on AI, with a focus on Automatic Facial Recognition (AFR) technologies. Consulting with the government and public sector, we are exploring the ethical implications of this technology within the private and public sectors, its compliance with GDPR and the best applications for its use.

Camect NVR
While a good level of operation is included with the initial purchase, a “low-cost” subscription model provides a more comprehensive remote alerting system. It is likely that this is still being developed.
Operation
T
What’s in the box? NVR Power supply (UK plugged) Network lead Connection card
While the Camect system initially uses a number of online services, all recordings are stored on the device and this ensures all video is held on site and can be reasonably secured 12
he Camect NVR is a Smart Network Video Recorder using AI routines to identify specific subjects within the scene and to prevent false alarms. This model is primarily aimed at mid to high-end residential and small commercial properties with higher-powered workstation and server systems becoming available soon.
Getting started The device is housed in a small-format PC case of just 12.8cm square by 5.4cm deep overall. A removable 2cm deep base holds the 2.5” disk drive, which in the supplied model was a 1TB drive. This can be easily be changed with just two cross head screws holding the cover plate in place. Once fitted the system supports new drive formatting. The case has sockets for 12v power input, 2 x HDMI output, 2 x USB 2, 2 x USB 3, audio in/out jack, RJ45 network port and a micro SD card slot. A momentary On/Off button is used to start and close-down the software. Two keyhole slots in the base allow wallmounting of the unit. However the lugs that hold the two case sections together are not particularly large so are unlikely to withstand much pressure or a knock. A single mating connector links the two sections for drive control. To operate, the only external connections necessary are the power input and the network port to an unrestricted internet link. The on-line documentation recommends using Chrome and Safari as the supported browsers but good results were also returned using Microsoft Edge.
With power connected and the On/Off button pressed for more than 1 second, the device runs through its start-up routine. If an HDMI monitor is connected you can see the Linux operating system loader information quickly scrolling through and on completion a simple instruction to access the system by visiting “https://home.camect.com/”. It seemed that the device would go into shut-down with only a short press of the On/Off button so positioning of the unit will be important to avoid unplanned shutdowns. During the start-up process the device communicates briefly with a number of USA based service providers including Amazon Data Services and Google Corporation. These links appear to confirm connection status, allow software version management, and use Google’s “time4” service for network time protocol updates. The device removes the need to deal with setting up port forwarding on routers by utilising Camect’s implementation of the WebRTC connection system. Logging in to the “Home.Camect.com” website you are prompted to set up an account or sign in using a Google, Facebook or Amazon account. Any valid email address can be used when selecting the Google option not just Gmail accounts. Once credentials are confirmed the browser display shows the connected device under a “Homes” tab. Once the device is selected the screen will show the search results for any suitable cameras discovered on the devices subnet. Initially these are likely to state “Incorrect username or password” and may include any existing recording devices. Selecting the “wrench” symbol gives access to the camera’s settings page and here can be entered the username and password to access the camera. You need to untick a box that allows Camect to change your camera settings if connecting to an existing system or changes may be made such as removal of on-screen displays and date & time settings. This would perhaps be better set to off by default. It was also found that once the

password details were set for one camera, it would try these credentials for all other cameras on the system, a tick-box disables this feature. Discovered cameras can be disabled if recording and analysis is not required. In operation the whole unit runs cool and is silent in operation.
Performance
A very interesting, small intelligent recording device that does not rely on “Cloud” analysis or storage and with ease of installation and management Menu options
While the Camect system initially uses a number of online services, all recordings are stored on the device and this ensures all video is held on site and can be reasonably secured, though alert recordings and associated GIFs may be transmitted using messaging or email services. Beneath each image is a timeline that indicates activity and can be used to select specific playback times. Plus and minus buttons expand and contract the timeline display from 1, 3, 10, 30 minutes, 1, 2, 3, 6, 12 hours and 1 day showing a full 24 hour span up to the live time. Above the timeline is a day selector to move back and forward in 24 hour periods. Good flyover text is provided along with prompts for some functions. Hovering over a Green bell symbol at the top right of the image shows the number of alerts created and how many are new. When selected, indicators can be used to go back and forth between events. Additional transport buttons allow 5s forward and backword increments and when in freeze frame allow frame advance and recede. Cameras are shown in a matrix on screen and can be taken to full screen by double clicking. Individual camera can be moved around the display by dragging and dropping into their preferred locations.
The Camect device does not have a common menu system but uses configuration settings for each camera. These are accessed from the “wrench” symbol and use the following tabs in the opened window: Basic: Information, naming, storage duration, password entry, share and disable. Alerts: Detect alerts, Objects, No Objects, Object box, sensitive mode, ratings, voice alert and Sentinel. Disks: Disk details & capacity, add network drive. Sync: Choose storage (Google drive etc.). Me: Alert messages and notifications, e-mail limits. The Alert Objects can be chosen from a list of, DHL, FedEx, Royal Mail, UPS, USPS, bicycle, car, motorcycle, person, pickup, truck, a variety of animal types or unknown animal. The No Object option alerts on any detected movement such as from trees. All main objects are enabled by default and can be inhibited individually. On replay of alerts a thumbs-up and down symbol can be used to rate detection as acceptable or not. This helps the system to learn the activity within the environment and improve future detection performance. A user forum can be accessed via the Camect website, for sharing user knowledge and feedback. A significant security concern was noted relating to the Camera information display; this shows the rtsp camera stream command including a clear text version of the camera’s user name and password. This means that any system user could have access to this level of detail at any time following the system’s configuration.
14
Detection of activity begins very quickly with subjects being identified with on-screen notifications such as “Car” and “Bicycle, Person” in the case of a cyclist. Even in very low light conditions the system was capable of identifying people and vehicles in spite of low-light motion blur. With input from the user the system can be fine-tuned to improve performance or to be selective in alert generation. An at-home mode allows the alerts to be restricted when on the premises. An iOS or Android app (left) is available that can be configured to set and unset the athome status when connected to the home or business Wi-Fi. The apps are currently only available via the Camect website not the usual app download sources. The right mouse button calls up additional commands with controls for functions such as audio, picture in picture and casting to compatible devices. It was found that if the Show Controls option was ticked the image would stay in a lower resolution mode when taken to full screen display. This is probably a minor bug that will be fixed in a future firmware update. Navigation along the timeline is very quick with clearly indicated activity. Individual timelines are given for each camera and all playback can be synchronised to a single display time. When recording, the device drops into a lower frame rate until activity is detected. This significantly increases potential recording duration. The recorder is stated as having a capacity that is governed by the maximum resolution of the connected cameras. This is up to 24MP so potentially up to 12 x 2MP HD cameras or 6 x 4MP. Performance will also be dependent on the amount of scene movement detected. Multiple devices can co-exist on the same network if increased capacity is required. Once configured, the device can operate without an internet connection as an intelligent NVR but in that case won’t allow alerts to be transmitted. The Sentinel compatibility means that there is scope for third-party monitoring.
Conclusion A very interesting, small intelligent recording device that does not rely on “Cloud” analysis or storage and with ease of installation and management.

PTZ ranges utilise dual and multiple systems
Dahua has launched two new PTZ series, the Hunter and Hubble, which combine dual PTZ and multiple panoramic and PTZ cameras into two distinct solutions. The Hunter series features smart tracking with simultaneous overview and detailed monitoring, deep-learning based AI reportedly delivering a false alarm rate of less than 2%, a capture rate of 98% and more than 27 supported attributes. Hunter also has one-click auto calibration. Dahua’s Hubble series uses a series of integrated fixed cameras to deliver a panoramic 270o or 360o view, while its integrated dome camera can zoom into specific parts of the overview scene. With Ultra HD resolution of up to 24 megapixels, Hubble also features crowd number and density detection, as well as vehicle counting and density monitoring, plus augmented reality mapping. dahuasecurity.com
18TB HDD specifically for AI video surveillance solutions
Seagate Technology has announced that it is now shipping 18TB SkyHawk Artificial Intelligence drives in volume. SkyHawk AI is a purpose-built hard drive for artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled surveillance solutions, enabling quicker and smarter decisions. The new drive supports deep learning and machine learning workload streams for edge applications with ImagePerfectAI. The capacity to retain more data over time is required for deep learning systems to become smarter and more accurate in their predictive analysis, and behaviour analysis requires significantly more data than traditional video capture. SkyHawk AI simultaneously sustains 32 AI streams alongside 64 video streams, supports multi-bay NVR and AI-enabled NVR and offers a 550TB/year workload rate, more than 3× the workload rate of standard surveillance hard drives in order to manage data deluge in complex video security system environments without sacrificing performance. This drive adapts between traditional video workloads and video plus AI workloads. seagate.com 16
Two new fogging devices to help prevent theft
Eclipse Digital Solutions has launched two new security fogging devices, Defender and Overwatch. Both devices help prevent theft and damage to premises if an intruder has gained unlawful access. Releasing in 0.004 seconds and at a saturable volume of 100 metres cubed, the fog system is a deterrent that gives intruders no time to think and forces them to retreat. While Defender is purely a security fogging device, Overwatch provides anti-theft surveillance via a 1080p resolution varifocal lens. Overwatch can also be activated either automatically by personnel on site or by staff at a remote monitoring centre who can view what is happening via the built-in camera. eclipsedigital.co.uk
Wireless video encoders now include new protocol
Vemotion Interactive has updated its video software and hardware encoders, to include a new Vemotion Streaming Protocol (VSP). Now available, the VSP has been designed to improve the efficiency of Vemotion’s GPRS, 3G/4G, Wireless 802.n, microwave link, satellite and broadband streaming technology. The new VSP offers improved efficiency of the video/data stream in normal circumstances but comes into its own when deployed within challenging network environments. VSP removes superfluous data transmission messaging that is not required, reducing the amount of data traffic on the network and making more bandwidth available for the video stream. vemotion.com

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at a few of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.
NVRs enable VMS benefits without server installation
Coordinator ensures proper closure of fire doors Vimpex has added a Fire Door Coordinator to its door holder product range. The unit ensures that a pair of self-closing fire doors will always close in the correct sequence, enabling each door leaf to shut fully, and help to maintain the fire integrity of the doors. If double fire doors don’t close in the correct sequence they will not close in the middle and leave a gap for dangerous smoke and gases to pass through. This is particularly important for fire-rated doors and self-latching security doors as it maintains the doors seal thus eliminating the need for human intervention. The coordinator can be used on both fire rated and non-fire rated door sets and has a range of finishes. It is a discrete product which is described as easy for the installer to fit and for the end-user to maintain. vimpex.co.uk
New Wisenet WAVE PoE NVRs introduced by Hanwha Techwin are designed to provide a cost-effective way for users to be able to take advantage of Wisenet WAVE video management software (VMS), without having to install a server. The 8 channel Wisenet WRN-810 and 16 channel WRN1610S NVRs provide users with a seamlessly integrated and optimised way of utilising the latest version of the VMS. The WRN-810 stores up to 12 terabytes of data with the help of two internal SATA HDDs and the WRN-1610S stores up to 24 terabytes of data via 4 SATA HDDs. An enhanced “Smart” search allows users to set-up an Analytics Event Region of Interest to narrow a search to a specific area of a field of view, whilst integration with Wisenet AI cameras enables the attributes of classified objects or people to be displayed. Users are also able to forensically search for specific objects or people by filtering the recorded metadata. hanwha-security.eu

Hybrid wireless fire detection and alarm equipment range is launched Hochiki Europe has launched the Ekho hybrid wireless fire detection and alarm equipment range. Using radio networking technology, the EN54-25 approved, RED compliant Ekho hybrid wireless system provides an ‘always on’ network of devices which can automatically adapt to changing environmental conditions. Ekho wireless devices are not tied to specific expanders, instead, each device instinctively chooses its parent expander based on the strength of the signal pathway back to the translator, with expanders automatically forming a bi-directional mesh network for delivering information to the main control panel. In the event where an expander’s signal is compromised, the wireless field device will automatically find and connect to an alternative expander with the next strongest signal pathway – providing end-users with enhanced safety benefits. The range offers a selection of wireless sensor types, as well as I/O units, a sounder, a sensor/voice-sounder/VAD and a manual call point. Its simplified design ensures that products in the series are easy to install. Utilising hybrid wireless systems negates the need to install cables therefore guaranteeing minimum disturbance to surroundings during installation. hochikieurope.com/ekho

INTERVIEW
Increased opportunities for all Trade-only distributor Videcon has been trading for 25 years in 2020 but this year was not what the company would have been expecting. We caught up with Matt Rushall, Managing Director, to find out more about the year and the developing trends idecon, the home of the Concept Pro brand, started trading in 1995 in West Yorkshire and last year it opened a Southern Office in Welwyn Garden City. We caught up with MD Matt Rushall to talk about the unexpected events of 2020 and how the latest security developments have given installers new opportunities in the market.
V
How has 2020 been for you so far? It's been a really big year for us, although it has been challenging as you'd expect given the pandemic! It has definitely been different to the years that have gone before, but 2020 has been a really successful year for us. The main reason for this was that we launched Deep Learning Plus which led to us to being able to introduce some really fantastic technology and applications to the security sector and wider afield in terms of the some of the problems that have arisen during the last six months. Just like everyone else we've had to face the challenge of Covid as a business and I'm pleased to say we've done so compassionately and without too much disruption to people’s lives. The business has remained trading every single day with a good level of staff at all times, but now we are back up to full staff levels. So it's been it's been a really good year in some ways, very challenging in others, but we've grown and had a successful year based largely around deep learning technology and problem solving using our systems in dynamic and nimble ways.

Matt Rushall
How has business been for your Southern Office which opened last year? It's all going really well. It opened last September and it's been fantastic to have Welwyn as part of the overall package of what Videcon offers. We've traditionally always been based out of West Yorkshire although we've sold and supported customers nationally, but it's been hard to be seen as a national company when you have your one and only presence in Yorkshire. To have the platform to demonstrate our products and train customers in the south of the country has been great for us.

(continued from previous page)
“As the technology grows and the flexibility develops it increases what we can do for our installers who in turn can do more for their customers
What facilities are there in the Southern Office? We've got a fully equipped demo room and training facility in Welwyn along with a trade counter with a good level of stock. But the main reason we opened was to have a physical presence and a team with a base in the South East where a significant amount of the economy is based. It has been a challenge this year to manage a second location and another team, but we've done that really well and I should say the team there has been fantastic in hosting demos and meetings online. Videcon has been trading for 25 years, so how do you think installer demands have changed in that time?
Videcon’s Southern Office in Welwyn opened in Sept 2019
Of course technology is evolving and improving all the time. Going back many years putting a camera on the wall and having an image recorded centrally was quite "cutting edge" and in terms of being a deterrent it is still very useful today. However, as the technology grows and the flexibility develops it increases what we can do for our installers who in turn can do more for their customers. Therefore, because systems can do so much more these days we find ourselves starting projects with the question "What problems are you facing today and how can we apply the product knowledge we have to solve those problems?" And although many of these problems involve security they are
increasingly including wider business issues such as health and safety, occupancy management etc. How does deep learning reduce false alarms? Analytics have been in the market for several years but the deep learning system is different because it is learning all the time using artificial intelligence. This means the technology is not just drawing a box or identifying when something crosses a line using video analytics; it does that of course, but it also learns as it goes. By that I mean that the technology has been taught before the recording solution is supplied, so it can recognise humans in a variety of poses and appearances for example. The system can be taught to recognise humans, vehicles, animals or whatever is required so that it can be configured to ignore foxes or cats to prevent the unwanted alarm being raised. It may be that the system needs to recognise when a car moves, opposed to a van or a person, and because the system is always learning it is becoming more valuable to the user and more flexible in what installers can offer. Distilling down the number of unwanted alarms that leave a site and go to a monitoring station is key for all parties. It's also hugely beneficial from a flexibility point of view offering up new applications all of the time such as facemask detection movingus away from just providing out-of-the-box solutions that do exactly what they are supposed to but nothing else. How do you think DIY security systems fit into the security market? DIY systems really are not comparable at all with systems that are installed by professional installers. The DIY market has got a place as a very low-level deterrent but really there is no substitute for a professionally built CCTV, intruder or access system that has been professionally installed. Ultimately the seller of the equipment, be it a DIY shop or online site, is not going to be there in the middle of the night if a system starts bleeping and you need some assistance as an end user or homeowner; it's the professional installer who's going to be there to help.

SEAGATE RESCUE
Protect your clients’ data Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Service Plans for SkyHawk surveillance drives help you to eliminate the high cost of data recovery in case of data loss – offering your customers extra peace of mind
S
eagate has dominated the data storage industry for 40 years because the company understands the unique data storage challenges of different sectors and their requirements utilising the formula of reliability equals quality over time. Since it first launched the SkyHawk range of surveillance drives, Seagate has been at the forefront of hard disk drives specifically designed for the 24/7 demands of the surveillance market. With its latest launch, the SkyHawk AI 18 TB surveillance hard drive (available in the UK from Oprema) the company has yet again proved it is driving innovation when it comes to video data storage and handling. However as monitoring and analytics functions are becoming increasingly more important and intelligent within video surveillance applications it is vital that the information gathered by CCTV systems is protected so that the data is ready for use, not only for security purposes but for business management and law enforcement. So how can you be sure that your customers will be protected from any potential data loss and that you will not have to try to recover any lost information?
Three years’ protection To provide assurance of data protection, Seagate includes three years of its industry-leading Rescue Data Recovery Services with every SkyHawk surveillance drive. Rescue Data Recovery Services are invaluable in the case of unexpected or accidental data corruption and drive damage. This service gives you access to a global team of world-class data recovery experts and has a 95% customer satisfaction rating and could save you £1000s in recovery lab costs. SkyHawk Health Management (SHM) drive monitoring software is designed for prevention, intervention and recovery. It is available on standard SkyHawk and SKyHawk AI surveillance hard drives.
“A Seagate Rescue plan cover for video surveillance drives includes three-year data recovery plan included at drive purchase,” explained Domenico. “It also includes free shipping for in-lab data recovery plus 24/7 online tracking and case status updates and recovered data returned on a Seagate external hard drive. It is a truly unique service that we are proud to offer installers to help care for their customers’ data and set their minds at rest that they are protected around the clock.”
“As an installer you can be confident that your customers not only have the best drives available, but that they are protected in every aspect of that drive” Rescue coverage is with you virtually anywhere in the world with recoveries completed in more than 90 countries with Seagate having receiving centres from Beijing to Oklahoma City. What’s more the recovery labs are secured 24/7 with physical monitoring, badge access, background checks, and virtual security measures (firewalls, write blockers, etc.), all client data is locked with a biometric scanner behind protected doors and all returned data, whether on cloud or HDD, is encrypted for extra security. That amounts to security from start to finish. “As the information gathered by surveillance systems can sometimes involve life-or-death situations, it is vital that installers and their customers are confident that no matter what, the data is protected and in the most secure way possible,” says Domenico. “Now that drives can contain up to 18TB of video information we are talking about a lot of footage that can be lost if the drive is not protected. As an installer you can be confident that your customers not only have the best drives available, but that they are protected in every aspect of that drive. That is peace of mind for both parties.”
Rescue plans So what do you get with a Rescue plan and what can you expect to happen should you need to activate it? We spoke to Domenico Scordo, Surveillance Lead for North-Europe at Seagate about the package.

550% and launching our Training On Demand platform to allow installers to train and learn at their own pace at any time they can. Since launch we’ve proactively reached out to over 5400 installers, trained over 3500 installers and issued over 1700 TOD (Training On Demand) certificates. “With the unprecedented circumstances of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was essential that our customers knew that we’re still here for them,” Laurence said. He continued: “We wanted to be able to give them a proactive focus while they may not be installing; enabling them to improve not only their product knowledge, but their business. “To have this work with GAP recognised in this way really means a lot to everyone at Pyronix for all the effort that’s gone in to supporting our customers while dealing with this situation,” Laurence said. “A massive thank you to absolutely everyone who voted for us for this award. This year hasn’t been without its challenges, but together we’ve continued to push forward in supporting customers throughout the year.” Alongside our GAP initiative, we also launched the MCNANO-WE, HEAT-WE and LightCamera solutions; providing greater upsell opportunities and extending the security offering to provide real added-value and longevity to our systems. “We’re really pleased to have been able to deliver the level of support we have to our customers, while also adding to our product portfolio,” Laurence said. “With the support initiatives and product launches we’ve already delivered to the market this year, all we can say is watch this space as we’ve got some big launches scheduled over the coming months.”

2020 WINNERS
DISTRIBUTOR OF THE YEAR 2020 ADI Global Distribution UK ADI Global Distribution UK has been voted Distributor of the Year 2020 by the readers of Professional Security Installer magazine. This is a return to form for the company after winning the award for ten consecutive years from 2008
M
ichael Lawrence, Regional General Manager – UK & Ireland at ADI Global Distribution said of the success: “It is fantastic for us to win the award for Distributor of the Year in 2020. For us to come out on top shows that we are clearly offering services that installers value and they appreciate all of the work we have been doing before and during the pandemic this year when all of our branches remained open to help installers keep going through the lockdown.” The company strives to be the leaders in the market sector with its product offering and availability, but what differentiates ADI from the competition is its responsiveness to customer needs, a key factor in creating customer satisfaction. This has been further enhanced with the opening of a 100,000+ sq/ft central distribution centre in Greater Manchester designed to provide an optimum end-to-end service for its broad diverse customer base. “Our relationships, support, product range and accessibility help installers get the best security solutions wherever they are,” says Michael. “We’re passionate about all things security from bringing our installers the very latest innovations to giving them total peace of mind all the way through their projects and beyond.” Despite the continued success for ADI in the PSI Premier Awards the company is always striving to improve its product range, which takes some doing as it’s the widest in the UK with more than £25M in stockholding of 260 brands in 28 branches – in fact, the only distributor to offer all security and fire categories. “Whatever an installer needs to satisfy their customers’ requirements, we’ve got a solution”, says Michael. Key to the ADI success is that in addition to its credentials as a distributor of security and fire technology products for so many leading manufacturers, the company also offers free technical support, dedicated field support engineers along with open and bespoke training programmes. “We’re here to help our installers win business and support them throughout the

jax is a professional wireless alarm developed by Ajax Systems. The company develops and manufactures professional security equipment since 2011 and currently protects over 700 000 users in 100+ countries across the globe. Ajax product line includes 32 gadgets for ultimate indoor and outdoor protection of premises. It features motion, fire, and leakage detectors, control panels (hubs), sirens, keyboards, panic buttons, as well as devices for smart home automation. Certified with Grade 2, Ajax is fully secured with anti-sabotage and anti-jamming systems, encrypted channels, and authentication. All devices operate for 5-7 years on battery power and are configured remotely via the app — there is no need to visit the venue. There are mobile apps for users and software for specialists: Ajax PRO: Tool for Engineers mobile app (iOS, Android) and Ajax PRO Desktop, a computer application with alarm monitoring function (Windows, macOS). Last year the company introduced MotionCam, a new motion detector with a camera for visual alarm verification. The detector resolves the problem of unverified alarms and security patrol calls by false alarms. Whenever MotionCam spots an intrusion, it takes several photos so that the owner and the security company can be convinced whether the intrusion is real or someone just forgot to disarm the system.
“Many thanks to everyone who voted for our MotionCam. 9 years ago, when we started building Ajax Systems, receiving awards like this was cosmically distant for us. Such achievements motivate us to grow and develop constantly and to become “#1 player in the global security market in the nearest future.” Aleksandr Konotopskyi, CEO of Ajax Systems Ajax Systems officially entered the UK market at the end of 2018. Meet the installer What would be a typical project for you? We work in a broad range of sectors, including transport, critical infrastructure, high security, banking and public space. As such, it is hard to pin our colours to one ‘typical’ project. Especially as we offer everything from surveillance camera installation on a moving vehicle to integrating complex systems incorporating technologies and solutions such as access control, ANPR, perimeter protection/detection, video analytics etc. What they all tend to have in common, however, is that they are highly regulated environments that present very specific security, safety or operational challenges that require more than a ‘plug and play’ responses. Projects that call on our experience and sector know-how, just as much as our technical engineering skills and technology offering. Do you have any 'go to' technology? It’s entirely dependent on the project in question and on specific customer needs. We work with best of breed technology partners so that we have access to the right solution to meet each customer’s individual needs. For example, on access control it may be that on one project we work with CEM Systems, on another with CCure or Grosvenor. Same with analytics - we have a close relationship with the likes of BriefCam and IPS so we can flex according to need. With video management systems the same…that fact with work with providers including Milestone, Synectics, Flir means we can find the best solution for the customer which meets their objectives, rather than having to shoehorn in a specific type of technology that isn’t the best fit for the job. This flexibility naturally extends to our on-vehicle solutions too – with providers such as Timespace and Stoneridge-Orlaco in our partner stable. Every technology from every company has its strengths and specialities – it’s our job to factor that into the solutions we design and eventually install.

detect. Prevent. Promote. The good they can do. The other great thing about working in our industry, for me anyway, is that you are able to build really meaningful relationships…with both customers and technology partners…through collaboration. Working together to solve a particular puzzle. It’s hugely rewarding. Is third party accreditation beneficial? Absolutely. In this industry there are some projects you just can’t even entertain without the right accreditations. As well as being a registered nuclear and defence contractor, we hold a number of prestigious certifications, from NSI Gold and RISQS to Cyber Essentials Pus. This is no ‘tick box’ exercise. Making sure we constantly review and update our working practices to meet the very latest standards keeps us competitive and moving forwards as a business. It makes us a better business.

What is the best thing about working in security? This might sound a bit righteous…I really don’t mean it to. But I honestly think one of the best things is knowing that you have a role to play in keeping people safe. Maybe even in saving lives. If I ever get asked what I do, people aren’t always very keen to hear about the latest technologies (even though I find them fascinating!). They are, without fail, always interested to hear about what the solutions we deploy enable. What they can

Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? I do think there is a skills shortage, yes. It’s incredibly difficult to find quality field engineers. Which makes it so important to invest in training in order to retain and upskill our workforce. That’s our approach anyway. From our graduate and apprenticeship positions through to our longest serving technicians (and trust me, some have served a long time…collectively our engineers have almost 400 years’ experience!), we are always looking to make learning opportunities available…whether through internal mentoring or external qualifications.
“In merging Synectics Mobile Systems and Quadrant Security Group to establish Synectics Security, we’ve really assembled a great team that is ideally equipped to handle anything”
Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Our business has been built on delivering solutions for challenging settings so it’s kind of par for the course that requests are difficult. It’s what we thrive on! What can be trickier is when what a customer wants doesn’t necessarily match what they truly need. For example, it may be they have seen another project where a specific type of technology has been deployed and want to replicate it, when in fact there may be a number of operational or risk factors which mean it doesn’t quite fit. Something else fits better. I think this type of situation puts the spotlight on how important the consultation side of what we do is. Because we work with a select range of diverse partners, we aren’t biased towards ‘one way of doing things’ and that means we can advise on the most appropriate way forward in each instance. What is the industry’s biggest myth? At the moment I think there are a lot of misconceptions around cloud-based solutions, especially in terms of cyber security. Many still believe that connectivity enabled via the cloud is inherently more risky in terms of data breaches. It isn’t. At least, not with the right set-up. Which is true of any security integration. I think it’s our responsibility as security integrators and installers to make sure we are skilled in this area and offer solutions certified to the very latest standards. What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? We don’t serve the domestic market, so this hasn’t really impacted our business directly. Indirectly, I think it is fair to say that the level of connectivity and automation people are now familiar with in their own homes has raised the bar on what they expect of the world around them. The public spaces they visit, the journeys
36
they take, the services they receive. We see this translating into the requests we receive. Requests we are of course happy to answer. What would make your job easier? Having the right team in place always makes my job easier and I truly believe we have that. In merging Synectics Mobile Systems and Quadrant Security Group to establish Synectics Security, we’ve really assembled a great team that is ideally equipped to handle anything, from buses to banking data centres, rail to retail. It makes a huge difference knowing that you have such a portfolio of skills to offer. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? My fantasy would be for more manufacturers to think beyond the security silo with the products they develop, right from the off. Don’t get me wrong, many do this already. But I think there is so much more potential. The level of integration and connectivity now available to organisations means security objectives are merging more and more with operational needs – a product can be made to fit into that reality but products designed from the ground-up with that reality in mind from the outset really stand out from the crowd. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? I studied law at university and while it may not seem very relevant to the work I do today, I do call on a lot of the principles and skills I developed. More importantly though, it was something that really interested me. And for me, following your passions is never a waste of time, even if life takes you a different way. What is a waste of time is passing up the chance to do what truly excites you. I love what I do today because of sticking to that idea, so I guess that is the advice I’d have to pass on to my younger self. Will England ever win the football World Cup again? No, sadly not. If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? That depends on whether my wife found out about it first, I may not get the chance to do anything! I’m just kidding (especially if she is reading this). I know exactly where it would go, to local charities and support groups. I know that sounds very clichéd, but I think what recent times have shown us how much ‘community’ matters, and how many great organisations can be operating on your doorstep that could all do with a helping hand.

PANEL
Will 2020 change security? Since March, the focus with some technology switched from security to Covid-safe as the demand for safe workplaces, shops and public areas grew. But what happens next? his year some systems previously used for security and fire purposes were re-assigned roles when it comes to dealing with non contact access control or temperature monitoring and screening. Now that we are almost at the end of the year and we start looking forward to what will hopefully be a ‘normal’ 2021, how will the buying habits and pandemic-driven applications change the technology market? We asked the experts for their opinions:
T
Jamie Evans – Oprema
The pandemic of 2020 has certainly changed the landscape for us all, not just the security industry. It has made us a lot more aware of touch points, crowded gatherings and personal space. It is inevitable that technology will adapt as our lives do. We have already seen manufacturers race to bring us solutions such as body temperature management, face mask detection and crowd control etc. The next step will be a more thought out integrated building management solution. Rather than just displaying a number on a screen depending on building capacity – why not integrate this directly into the automatic door system to open when space is available in the store? It’s not just about how many people are in the store. We already have camera technology to sense a crowd of a certain amount of people in an area, we might think to integrate this technology into our solution too. Last year saw an increase in QR code functionality being built into access control systems, the same QR code technology that is key to the nations track and trace system. Is it a step too far to ask customers to scan the QR code from their track and trace app before being granted access? Doing the above, we have intelligent building management systems that can: • Read body temperature • Face mask detection • Log track and trace details • Count people already in store • Analyse the space in front of a camera,
www.psimagazine.co.uk
checking for overcrowding in certain aisles • Automatically alert you if you have been too close with somebody with a positive infection test A system that would’ve sounded Orwellian, even in early 2019, is now here, albeit in fragmented product ranges. I believe the future will just be joining these dots together for a fully integrated pandemic management solution.
Justin Hollis – Hikvision UK & I
The pandemic has acted to accelerate trends which were already on their way. It has helped to prove to a wider audience that security technology has evolved beyond simple alarms, video surveillance and access control, to provide integrated critical functions such as temperature screening and mask detection. Video security is becoming part of a wider suite of video-enabled functions, with security at its core but delivering valuable information and practical, actionable data. So yes, contactless access control will increasingly become the norm: we’ve had immediate success with terminals that integrate face recognition access with mask detection and temperature screening functions, both of which can be configured to allow or deny access if triggered. And face recognition can be complemented with proximity readers for additional layers of security as required. Video security and AI-based analytics software will be integrated with public signage systems to aid in circumstances where social distancing enforcement is necessary and live information is critical. We’ll see video security systems utilised in the vast majority of environments: from retail to hospitals, from educational establishments – where the ability to swiftly pivot to distance learning will be increasingly important – to public transport, bank branches, and hotels. And while the public health aspect of these solutions may drive their short-term uptake, the very fact that they are able to harness highly effective, well-designed software to enable these additional capabilities will also create an environment where further non-security

functions are perceived as conveniently and non-controversially as smartphone apps, and indeed many will be accessible via phone and tablets. Once the benefits are clear, video security and access control will remain at the heart of the new systems, but their wider functions may be the way most users interact with them on a regular basis.
David Davies – DVS
CV-19 has made lots of people rethink how they deploy technology but also pushed manufacturers to improve, rethink , redesign products to fit inside what we now consider to be normal practice to include touchless access control products which are not just easier and common sense to use but will remain the standard. I believe moving forward, where a big shift toward facial recognition products has emerged over fingerprint technology, we will see Time and Attendance systems being improved to monitor staff effectiveness and attendance. Whilst these have been around for many years there was never a real driver to use them outside of the customers needs , these needs are now stronger than ever. There is also a big shift in rapid deployment system to maximise security offerings , minimise installation times and attendance on sites and therefore exposures. There are many systems now able to detect and deter those that are not wearing masks ,and this function alone has been a big seller for many deployments , in most cases it is mandatory to wear a mask and in others its just promoted as good practice so these devices offer a simple and effective method to combat
Simon Davies – Norbain SD
It’s going to take some time before we fully appreciate the long term effects the pandemic is going to have on the security and surveillance sector. Generally, it’s an industry that tends to weather storms quite well when compared to other sectors, the services we provide compared to others is ultimately ‘essential’ therefore the impact is slightly mitigated. In a ‘new normal’ consisting of empty properties, shuttered shops and deserted streets it has become vital for businesses to look again and invest in remotely monitored and controlled security solutions, access control, video and alarm systems can all be enhanced to cope with a reduction in the need to attend site and the impact of a reduced workforce. The pandemic has changed how we operate on both a personal and professional level, it has also changed our relationships with technology. The success of content video analysis for occupancy control and face mask detection will undoubtedly lead to an wider use of AI-driven behavioural recognition technologies, with metadata being used to identify possible outbreak areas to maintaining public safety and order as greater economic hardship takes hold. 40
this. People counting solutions are on the rise again with many limiting store numbers to limit risk and to ensure social distancing can be maintained, some are being made even more intelligent and being used to view occupancy before and after a evacuation which could help offer valuable information. My guess is moving forward these devices will be further adopted as legislation or good practice changes or when something helpful outside of this pandemic could be added to ensure the devices always provide some benefit to the customer and there users. The other area we have seen growth is the personal and home markets where people are protecting property but also looking for smarter homes , there has been a drive to offer more smart home offerings inside the security product offerings allowing the security installer a chance to cross over into the smart home sector which is set to grow again, and this is a big area of growth I believe for security manufacturers moving forward.
Steve Riley – PAC/GDX PACOM
The pandemic has brought forward the deployment of new, advanced technology across the industry to address the restrictions imposed by a global health event like COVID and learning to live with the changes that such a global event has created. It’s not COVID-19 alone that is driving this: other areas of potential volatility have also accelerated the role of technology - such as climate change, global trade rivalry, political rivalries and protests, along with the UK’s departure from the EU. Whatever happens with COVID-19 over the next few months, we can expect a higher level of volatility for some time. The security industry finds itself in a privileged position, due to our skilled field engineers, where it is ideally placed to help users engage with technology and take full advantage of the added value it can bring. It has always been the industry’s role to promote security and health measures anyway – now it is perfectly poised to help organisations build resilience and intelligence using the data our solutions gather in an added value way. We are seeing security technology take on a wider role as a result. On a basic level, technology is being used to better secure people and property via contactless and automated technologies replacing those that require manual intervention. This is only going to become more mainstream.

John Coleman – CSL
Challenging circumstances have been witnessed across many sectors throughout the UK during recent months, but this has also highlighted how technologically advanced the fire and security sector is. For many years, various manufacturers have had great features available, but until now their full potential has not been realised. Take intruder alarms, for example, the Upload/Download capabilities for providing remote support for alarm systems have been available for many years, but less than 10% of security companies use this feature, instead preferring to send an engineer to site. Many installers will see this as a way of physically demonstrating to the end-user that they are getting the full service they are paying for. However, how often do you see an engineer when you have an issue with your broadband router? The pandemic has highlighted that being able to access systems remotely is now a vital feature as it means that critical security systems can still be serviced and maintained without the need for an engineer to attend site – although some issues will need on-site support. Signalling providers, panel manufacturers and CCTV companies have great tools for providing this remote connectivity and we are going to see more installers wanting to utilise these features to help ensure that they can offer uninterrupted service to their end-users. In the ever-evolving world of M2M and IoT, there has never been a more important time than now for us all to embrace this technology and maximise the benefits it can bring. Our industry is in a leading position to deliver this remote support and I believe we will start to see this become the norm for professional installs. The tools are there to allow our industry to provide ‘business as usual’ service on-site or if needed, from a computer in the office. Let’s embrace it! Expanding on that, and recognising that any response to risk must be proportionate, the industry will be helping users put their existing systems to more intelligent use, to unlock greater value from their investment. Providers must help users move from on-site systems to hosted solutions, provided as a service, and drawing on the flexibility, scalability and resilience of the cloud. They also need to help users leverage the data that their systems generate, to provide more value over and above protection alone. Examples of this could include knowing where assets or stock are located ,when office space is most utilised, which areas of a store to place higher value items, managing work and people flow to avoid infection etc. It allows them to align their resources with their needs, and prepare themselves better for challenging times.
Neil Killick – Milestone
One result of the pandemic is that video technology has entered the mainstream. As a result, there is a growing acceptance of a wider range of video applications, and this presents the industry with an opportunity to diversify and help businesses with more than their security needs alone.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
The video technology that has recently come to the fore – whether facemask recognition, people counting or emergency vehicle recognition – was already in development. The pandemic has simply accelerated its adoption and further innovations in these fields, and many more. A few months ago, we would be talking about how this technology would help get people back to work. Now, while much of Europe remains in a state of flux at the time of commenting, we are looking at how this technology can support operations effectively as organisations settle into the ‘new reality’ of working post-COVID. The state of flux we find ourselves in right now demonstrates just how important it is for businesses to be flexible – in how they operate, but also in how their systems can quickly adapt to a changing COVID-threat landscape. Having that level of agility in the current environment could be make-or-break for many businesses, and it’s the job of the video technology industry to seize this opportunity and communicate its capabilities to cross-sector businesses. Ultimately, the pandemic will drive the use of video technology to support a vast range of business critical activities, and it’s my belief that in the future we’ll see video being routinely used for marketing, health and safety purposes, alongside its existing and proven role in security.

he last year has been unprecedented for many businesses in a variety of industry sectors. Many companies have had to adapt working practices and company plans due to the coronavirus. Social distancing measures and government guidelines in many countries have changed the way people are able to move around commercial and public buildings. Paxton’s Global Chief Executive Adam Stroud explains: “Due to the nature of the pandemic, we saw that the initial appetite for security installations was vastly reduced. As the initial shock receded, it became clear the major role the security industry has to play in helping businesses to keep their people safe”. At the start of the 2020, and in the early stages of the global pandemic, Paxton had international product launches planned throughout the year. The technology manufacturer decided to adapt these plans to suit the current situation and began creating new updates to help reduce the risk of infection on sites installed with Net2. Alongside these software enhancements, Paxton has built a new Installer app for smart devices
Paxton’s new app is now officially live. The apps search functionality has been designed with a seamless experience in mind. Individual product information can be accessed within seconds via the apps built in bar code scanner. It will provide direct digital access to their Knowledge Base, which consists of up-to-date product specifications, technical documents, instructions as well as answers to FAQs. Adam Stroud explains “We are always looking for opportunities to improve the service we provide to our installers. Our ever-growing library of information about our products ranges from videos to technical documents and sales information. Installers finding what they need on the go can often be a challenge and making this easier has been one of the key objectives of the Paxton Installer app”. Another benefit of the app for installers is the ability to favourite link documents for quick access and share information with colleagues or end users via email, text, airdrop, or WhatsApp. All documents and videos are also available offline as they are downloadable in app, making it possible to access information when internet access is a problem. When using the app, installers will be able to direct dial Paxton’s expert technical support team and find a list of their local distributors to make sourcing products and getting installation advice quick and easy.

which will help their customers with technical information and onsite installations. Adam Stroud further explains: “There are certain things such as this pandemic, that happen outside of our direct control, and where possible I think it’s important to try to see the opportunity to do something fresh and different. The new updates for Net2 are just that, and I am very pleased we have invested in the development of an app to make things simpler for our installers”.
Net2 COVID-secure updates Net2 Pro users can now benefit from the entire series of additional COVID-secure features that Paxton have developed this year. They all work simply and seamlessly together to reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus around populated buildings. Adam Stroud continues: “Despite the difficult circumstances, we understood it was important to develop new ideas and make our presence felt, reassuring customers, and demonstrating that we continue to push forward even when times get tough. Over the last four months we have released new versions of Net2 software with Flexible Access Permissions, Occupancy Management, Checkpoint Control, and have more additional Thermal Scanner integrations”. • Flexible Access Permissions - help meet social distancing guidelines by limiting high traffic and allow a one-way flow of movement • Occupancy Management - enable users to control and monitor how many people are on their site, in any given area • Checkpoint Control - allows users to set up designated checkpoints and monitor as well as approve staff and visitors entering those areas • Thermal Scanner integrations - adds the use of cameras to support health and wellbeing in high security areas as well as identifies people that could be at risk of infecting others You can find out further information on these updates on Paxton’s Net2 product page.

INTERVIEW
Maintaining focus in 2020 The events of 2020 took us all by surprise and is still having an impact on our lives and businesses. We spoke with Jamie Allam of Amthal to find out about his year so far amie Allam is the Commercial Director at Amthal Fire & Security in St Albans. The independent company was all ready to celebrate in 2020, but since March those plans have been put on hold. We caught up with him recently to find out more about the impact of the lockdown on the business and the technologies being installed.
J
How has the year been for you so far? 2020 has certainly been very different to how we had planned it! We started the year on a high with plans to celebrate our 20th Anniversary and then when the pandemic hit it changed our plans drastically. Initially one of the big challenges for us was getting all of the office team members supplied with the technology to enable them to work from home. After that, as a business, we changed our working habits and overall approach to how the office operated. Looking back I would say that the reality of the pandemic for us hasn't been as severe as we first anticipated it would be, although I'm well aware of the devastation it has caused for many sectors, in many of which we have clients. We have now settled into what is the "new norm" and we are relatively optimistic for the remainder of the year; looking forward to 2021 we will be continuing to recruit to support our growing sales revenue. We have been very fortunate in that respect as there have been a lot of industries that have devastated in 2020, but we have been able to keep our focus on growing the business and having the right team in place to support that growth with new and existing customers. Has the pandemic changed the types of installations you’ve been doing and the technologies you’ve been using? Yes, it has. Obviously when the pandemic first hit, a lot of the larger installation projects that hadn't started were put on hold because people didn't know what to expect with the lockdown. A lot of sites were shut for an initial period, which meant that our focus moved away from

the installation side of the business and the majority of our revenue throughout that initial two or three month period came from our service offering. This involved continued support and focus on FM and property managers who relied on us to keep their buildings safe for residents. There's also been an increase in crime in line with the economic downturn so we've had a lot of focus on security with our historical residential database and on keeping keyworkers safe in their environments. When the pandemic first started there was an initial flurry of activity around contactless technology, temperature access control and the automatic temperature monitoring of people, but I think that quickly died-off after a short period in which we were doing a lot with Covidrelated technologies. The reality now is that it was just a bit of a phase that a lot of businesses went through. I think the uncertainty of not knowing whether businesses were going to be

“When the pandemic first started there was an initial flurry of activity around contactless technology, temperature access control and automatic temperature monitoring of people, but I think that quickly died-off
Keeping it in the family! L-R: Jamie Allam, Sam Paprotny, WIlliam Chapman and Reece Paprotny
getting back into buildings or not caused that trend to drop-off. Hospitality sectors and others that have been really severely hit have closed their premises and so we have been doing a lot to help them protect properties while they've been empty, but I'd say it's largely returned back to a normal situation now and the initial installations that we that we were moving away from are now back online. We've seen the usual split between the installation and service sides return to the business. The company appears to be quite family oriented, why have you taken this approach? I think it's been with us since the business started, with family values at the core of our vision. Amthal was started in 2000 by my two co-directors, John (my brother) and his school friend Paul. As the business grew and developed, John and Paul leaned on family for support so we had Bob, AKA Dad, who was an ex-bank manager that helped in the early days with the financial elements and Anne, AKA Mum, who was the first office administrator; both of whom only retired recently. John and Paul's wives both started working in the business from very early on, so I guess this is where our family-based ethos came from and continues to this day. John's son has now started in the business as an apprentice engineer, and we communicate very much like a family; we've got a strong focus on trust and respect within the business. We're committed to employee engagement having moved away from annual reviews and we now have a one-to-one check-in at least every three months, but more often than not every month with our team and line managers. We really believe in communication,
feedback and setting clear objectives and actions for people so that they feel really empowered and engaged. Has the rapid rise of DIY security affected the company? As a business we don't install or maintain ungraded DIY systems, but we do often get phone calls when somebody has purchased a system from a wholesaler and they want us to come and install it, which we won't get involved with. Those that take security seriously know it is all about choosing the right system and ensuring it is professionally installed. We do get a lot of requests for integrating security into smart home systems and building management systems and that is something that we continually train on. We continue to learn a lot about smart systems and IP technologies from our younger engineers who are complemented by our more senior engineers who have the more traditional installation skills, so it works well between our multi-generational team. Essentially though, we made a conscious decision not to get involved in the DIY market for a number of reasons. For example, there are considerations around data protection and there are a lot of concerns about who can gain access to a system if it is not installed correctly. Is AI technology a subject that your customers are asking you about? Not specifically if I'm honest. We don't have any AI technology as part of our plan at the moment and it is not something that we are specifically educating and learning about. The closest we get to AI technology, or the use of it, is with video analytics. I can see that manufacturers would predict that the future will be AI-based but as an installer we very much design our systems around the technology that is available. So we wouldn't necessarily start integrating or using it within our system designs until the concept has been proven. We are more of a traditional installer so we will use the equipment that's got a proven track record and that we know is reliable. We might jump on the AI bandwagon at a later date once its applications have been established within the market. Listen to the full interview in the October 2020 PSI Security News Podcast

Remote connectivity with Integriti Managing access control and security remotely is essential in the current climate. Inner Range’s Enterprise level intelligent access control and intruder detection system comes with a range of options for remote connectivity, as technical manager Dave Ash explains. Fixed client - Most Integriti customers benefit from our Integriti Pro software on the system server that allows one fixed client connection. A client connection can be made to the server from any computer on the same network, or can be routed from an external network in various ways including via VPN A security manager could install the client software onto their work laptop and connect – remotely if need be – to the server in the office.Fixed (and floating) client access provides a more secure link to Integriti than a web client connection, especially if customers use a secure encrypted VPN or tunnelling protocol as well. Fixed client access allows greater control over system actions than a web client too. Floating client - Some customers prefer to set up a floating client licence, which is installed on the server as well as the computers or laptops of employees who will need to access the system. It allows an agreed number of operators to connect simultaneously. For example, a team of 20 people could be allowed to use the system and have the relevant software on their computer but only five could be logged in at any one time. This is obviously helpful for larger teams that share duties 24/7. A floating client licence offers the same security and functionality as a fixed client. Web client - A web client gives customers a more flexible way to connect with Integriti via a web browser. The access is not fixed to a particular computer but is linked to a person’s identity credentials. A web client licence gives secure access to Integriti and allows a security manager to do the majority of tasks they could do via a fixed or floating client connection. Multiple licences are required if more than one person needs access at the same time. Visit: www.innerrange.co.uk

REMOTE SOLUTIONS
Future-proof your business Why offering remote security solutions will future proof a security installation business
U
p until the coronavirus pandemic hit the world back in the early spring of this year, cloud-based security solutions were a steadily growing market. Now, they’ve taken on a whole new meaning as businesses rapidly reassess how they operate in light of Covid-19, reevaluating everything from security management and occupancy control to space requirements, social distancing and health and safety practices. So why has it become imperative for the UK security industry to offer them?
The benefit of the cloud In a nutshell, as an installer remote solutions offer the opportunity to increase profit margins, enhance efficiency and create a recurring revenue stream - and future proof your business. According to Jeremy Hockham, MD at Norbain: “The cloud allows you to manage servicing remotely, which can reduce costs whilst also enhancing productivity. It gives you the potential to assess your headcount more accurately and become more agile – so you’re more likely to win those security contracts in the first place. You can offer a flexible solution that clients see real value in which can also help you increase your profits. Of course, it also allows for remote management
www.psimagazine.co.uk
and thus no requirement to physically access a client’s site – a huge plus in the current environment.” The cloud doesn’t just provide a secure data repository, it also offers users a management tool. This means that the solutions can be managed off-site and outsourced to a specialist security management provider, allowing organisations to focus on their core business. As their security partner, you’d be able to offer more than just the annual onsite check-up required by insurance. With a remote solution, you could offer your customers stress free management of their entire intruder detection, access control and video solution. You could also provide regular system health-checks, execute requested changes swiftly and diagnose issues, all without setting foot on the customer’s premises. All this can allow you to plan your resources, focus your engineer’s workloads and respond effectively to emergencies. And there can be significant cost savings too, removing the need to install, maintain and upgrade an on-site IT infrastructure and replacing it with a scalable, flexible ‘Service as a Solution’ managed offering. But there’s been one concern which pops up time and again for business owners and security installers alike, cyber security. How can cloud or remote security solutions actually be as or more secure than traditional physical security systems?

REMOTE SOLUTIONS
(from previous page)
From an installer or security management company’s point of view, remote rolutions offer an opportunity to increase profit margins, enhance efficiency and create a recurring revenue stream
How safe are cloud solutions? “It’s a common misconception that data stored in the cloud is less secure than on a physical NVR,” says Jeremy. “Cyber security protocol means that the cloud-based solutions available offer a flexible, layered security perimeter against multiple types of attacks. “With a remote security solution, since there is no physical recording device onsite, it can’t be physically stolen, making the surveillance system more secure. It also means that the data is easier for your customer, or you as an authorised individual, to access – at any time and from anywhere.” So if someone has tampered with entry/exit points or cameras, it will alert you at any time if there is an attempt to bypass or break it, allowing you to react instantly on behalf of your client. By the same token, a cloud-based system is ‘selfmonitoring’ so will tell you if there is an issue, for example with a camera or video feed, that you can then resolve promptly. Plus, with more people working from home than ever, it solves your very real challenge of how to minimise your engineers’ infection risk whilst resolving a residential or commercial system defect. You’ll either be able to fix it remotely, or pinpoint where the problem is before you arrive and arrange a mutually convenient resolution.
What’s in it for me?
Remember that, from an installer or security management company’s point of view, remote rolutions offer an opportunity to increase profit margins, enhance efficiency and create a recurring revenue stream. In addition, installing a remote solution can be simpler and more cost effective with less physical pieces of equipment and wires to patch together.
52
Once you’re managing a remote security solution, there are multiple benefits: • Management: as a virtual engineer, the majority of tasks that would have required a site visit can now be fixed remotely. Resulting in reduced costs through efficient time management. • Cost saving: Reduced workforce requirements, less engineer site visits and reduced fleet requirements and fuel costs. • Recurring Revenue Opportunity: In addition to the initial installation, you’ll be managing the client’s remote security solution including hosting and ongoing maintenance. • Opportunity to cross-sell: maintenance contracts, health checks, other additional products/services from across your security portfolio. • Quick solution: No waiting to find out what the problem is or lengthy visits to the customer’s premises, advanced system monitoring and health checks will notify you as they arise. • Access benefits: there is no need to physically access to a business premises and a home-owner doesn’t need to be home. The beauty of a remote solution is that most maintenance or analytical tasks no longer require site access. And when you do need to go onsite, you’ll have more information at your fingertips, causing less inconvenience for customers, plus it can be more easily planned. • Enhanced efficiency: you can react more quickly. For example, for Intruder contracts requiring a 4 hours response time remote solutions offer a massive advantage. • Customer satisfaction: quicker solutions and reduced response time. The possibilities are almost endless, with peace of mind for end users, confidence in a fully operational system and increased operational efficiencies for you. “The reasons for considering a remote security solution are numerous,” concludes Jeremy Hockham. “But with the changing landscape of how businesses will operate as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and its effect on how we live and work, it’s prudent for all businesses to consider such systems right now. Whether we like it or not, how we do business has changed forever, with many considerations being catapulted into view. And so the security solutions we offer must also adapt to ensure we can support our clients’ changing needs.” The good news is, remote security solutions offer a very real opportunity for installers to future-proof their own businesses, sell more, increase profitability and enhance efficiency.

ACCESS CONTROL
Removing barriers to “smart” Here we look at the benefits of smart access control solutions and discover how out-dated methods and a lack of cyber security knowledge inhibit adoption
I
t is no surprise that a drive towards embracing smarter access control solutions comes as a result of the success of cloud technologies; so heavily relied upon during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Tech giants with the scope, scale and imagination to bring about radical change have given businesses a taste of what is possible when moving away from legacy technologies to embrace new ways of operating. Organisations, realising the value of cloud, are now looking to transform their physical security technologies to take care of all their security and business requirements. According to John Allen of Axis Communications as physical security becomes more dynamic and more interconnected, so it evolves: “Modern access control is now about so much more than simply opening doors, with its digitisation bringing multiple business
“Modern access control is now about so much more than simply opening doors, with its digitisation bringing multiple business benefits which would simply not be possible using traditional models” 54
benefits which would simply not be possible using traditional models,” he says. “Integration, and therefore collaboration with existing software and systems, enables businesses to take advantage of intelligent, connected solutions which can offer great combined value, providing a high level of comprehensive protection.” Examples of access control solutions range from simple card readers to two factor authentication systems using video surveillance as a secondary means of identification, right through to complex networks of thermal cameras, audio speakers and sensors. These systems, connected through the cloud, can be customised and scaled to meet the precise requirements of today’s customer. And it’s the ease of cloud integration, combined with open technologies and platforms that is encouraging increasing collaboration. “During the current COVID-19 pandemic, frictionless access control has provided an effective ‘hands free’ means of accessing premises, using methods such as QR code readers and facial recognition as credentials to prove identity,” says John. “Frictionless access control removes the need to touch shared surfaces, therefore minimising the risk of infection; of crucial importance in the current climate. Frictionless access control brings health and safety into the equation, as well as the security of entrances and exits.”

EDIT Access Nov20_000_PSI_mar15 23/10/2020 17:30 Page 2
“As we move forward, access control systems will become data collection points and door controllers will become intelligent I/O devices” Barriers to adoption Traditional suppliers have built up a strong business model around their expertise, service and knowledge of physical security. Yet, network connectivity and the IoT present a constantly shifting landscape, requiring the traditional physical security vendor and installer to learn the language of IT; of open platforms, IP connectivity and software integration, in order to adapt to market changes and remain relevant. As we have mentioned before in PSI, those who cannot adapt, and are simply not ready for this changing market, risk being left behind as the physical security landscape continues to shift and technologies evolve. With end users and systems buyers increasingly demanding smarter, more integrated and more business focussed solutions from their suppliers, it is clear that only those who are prepared and able to deliver what their customers want will succeed in this space. Time will not stand still and many are now beginning to realise that connected network-enabled solutions are here to stay.
Cyber hygiene importance “Connecting any device to a network has a degree of risk, and it is therefore imperative that any provider not only understands modern connected technologies, but also the steps necessary to protect corporate networks,” explains John. “Cameras, access control systems and IP audio devices which have been left unprotected can potentially become backdoors into a network and used as access points by hackers. These vulnerabilities can be further compromised by the proliferation of connected devices within the Internet of Things (IoT), the network of devices and sensors that can communicate with one another and, though have extraordinary potential, can also be used against the very business or industry they have been employed to protect when vulnerabilities are exploited. “Cybersecurity considerations should therefore be a key factor in the development and deployment of new security systems,” continues John. “Access control technologies should be manufactured according to recognised cybersecurity principles, incident reporting and best practises. It is important to acknowledge
www.psimagazine.co.uk
that the cyber integrity of a system is only as strong as its weakest link. A system which is not prepared to accept it is a potential source of cyber exposure and this will ultimately impact negatively on a device’s ability to provide the necessary high levels of physical security.”
The future of access control The future of access control, and of physical security as a whole, will therefore be dependent on the willingness of suppliers to implement new designs, new ways of thinking, and to influence the installers and others in their supply chains to embrace this new world. In addition, cybersecurity considerations are absolutely vital for keeping businesses safe; the integration of cyber secure technologies from trusted providers providing peace of mind around the safety or corporate networks and integrity of the deployed technologies. “As we move forward, access control systems will become data collection points and door controllers will become intelligent I/O devices,” concludes John Allen. “QR codes for visitor management and biometric face recognition for frictionless access control will increasingly be managed at the edge as analytics in a camera or sensor. The future of access control presents an exciting and challenging time for those ready to accept it, to secure it and to help shape it; a true opportunity to innovate for a smarter, safer world.” Download the whitepaper – “The digitisation and cyber security of physical access control”

Transforming wired systems
Ajax Systems has announced the launch of MultiTransmitter, an integration module that allows the connection wired detectors to the Ajax alarm, opening up more flexible settings for users, automation scenarios, smartphone control, and opportunities for upgrades
A
ccording to Ajax, the system allows transforming the wired alarm into a smart security system while keeping the old security equipment. The module takes the place of the old security control panel and connects wired devices to a wireless control panel or hub. The MultiTransmitter has 18 wired zones for connecting devices and tampers that support four types of contacts: NO, NC (without a resistor), EOL (NC with a resistor), EOL (NO with a resistor). Besides 18 zones, the module has three 12V power outputs: two main and one separate for fire detectors. The unit itself is powered by the 110/230V main, and, in case of a power loss, there is a place for a backup battery in the body that will supply the module and the connected devices. The central unit and the users are notified about any power problems in the Ajax app. Also, in the app, it is possible to define a room, a group, a device type (detector/tamper), and an
www.psimagazine.co.uk
alarm type for each device. Due to this, users can see a clear notification text indicating what happened, when, and where instead of the zone number of the triggered detector. And the security company receives a clear alarm code and responds according to the protocol. For installers, the MultiTransmitter is a step towards remote service. In the Ajax PRO: Tool for Engineers mobile app or the Ajax PRO Desktop PC app, it is possible to remotely set the delay when entering/leaving, adjust a schedule for switching on the night mode and activation of a siren when the detectors are triggered, and temporarily switch off the device in case of a malfunction. Thanks to separate power terminals, false alarms of fire detectors connected to the MultiTransmitter can be reset in the app meaning no more unnecessary site visits.

The camera offers very high sensitivity and 1920 x 1080p HD performance with pre-installed firmware to provide video analytic functions. These can be selected from options including Audio Exception, Defocus, Scene Change, Face, Line Crossing, Intrusion, Region Entrance, Region Exiting, Unattended Baggage and Object Removal Detection. Review: The wide range of detection methods mean that this camera can fulfil the majority of current security video tasks. Its builtin Infrared illuminator range and high sensitivity provide very good image quality even in challenging conditions.
Tyco – Illustra Flex IFS02P6INWIT This Indoor HD PTZ dome is from the Illustra Flex range and has a 30 times optical and 12 times digital zoom range with IR illumination up to 25 metres. An external variant has IR support to 150 metres. Review: A very well constructed PTZ camera unit with straightforward connection and configuration. Some minor issues encountered with setup functions and lens performance but overall, good image quality and extended zoom range.
Hanwha Techwin – Wisenet PNM-9320VQP The Wisenet PNM-9320VQP is a relatively large assembly that can house up to 4 fixed camera modules for wide area coverage and with a PTZ camera beneath fitted with a 32x zoom lens of 4.44mm to 142.6mm. The wide range of fixed camera modules means that the camera can cover a full 360° field of view or 4 specific narrower views to suit the surveillance requirement. Review: An interesting device to provide wide area surveillance with PTZ support for close-up or automated tracking of subjects. The single network connection means that an existing network camera can be upgraded to a multiview capability without the need for additional network hardware.
Dahua – DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 The DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 is promoted as a 2MP Starlight IR Dual PTZ external network camera. It is from the Dahua WizMind range and is based on 2 x 1/2.8” CMOS sensors, one with a wide angle view and one with a 25x optical zoom lens. “Deep Learning algorithms” are used to support detection functions such as smart tracking of vehicles or humans with automatic filtering of false alarms. . Review: An interesting ONVIF compliant dome with high sensitivity and capable of tracking subjects while still maintaining an overview of the scene of interest. Good differentiation of targets to track humans and/or vehicles while preventing false alarms.
Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DUPZ
Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°. Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this.

Biometric boarding success at Heathrow Airport Looking for new ways to make it easier and quicker for passengers to travel through the airport and board aircrafts quicker, Heathrow Airport has commissioned dormakaba to supply and install self-boarding gates integrated with Heathrow’s biometric system. Heathrow Airport is the second busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic. In 2018, it handled a record 80.1 million passengers, and 480,339 aircraft movements. Simon Wilcox, Heathrow Passenger Automation Programme Lead, wanted a way to make it easier and quicker for travellers to pass through the airport – without having to compromise on security. As such, the automation programme required implementing biometric gates that would bring facial recognition to each point of the departing passenger’s journey. The new technology uses facial recognition at check-in, bag drops, security lanes and boarding gates to create a seamless experience for passengers walking through the airport, with less physical contact and face to face engagement between staff and passengers required.
60
After reviewing the requirements for the airport, dormakaba recommended and supplied its HSBM03 Self Boarding Gates and PaxCheck Self Boarding Solution. Andy Carter, Contracting Business Sales and Operations Director at dormakaba UK said “Heathrow required a bespoke and technically capable system to allow it to cope with passenger numbers whilst also providing a seamless passenger experience. The final project looks to have over 400 gates installed across the whole airport. Each one has our software on the gates, incorporating Heathrow’s biometric data, as well as a connection to the management server.” Currently, Terminals 2A, 2B and 5A have been completed, with Terminal’s 3, 4, 5B and 5C scheduled for completion by end 2020. Completed terminals now benefit from a self-boarding solution that adheres to all the latest relevant security and build standards as well as third and fourth line support from dormakaba. Across these completed terminals, passengers present their boarding pass to a reader on the gate, which then scans and checks the pass with the airline’s Departure Control System (DCS) and either opens or remains closed depending on the response. For passengers departing on domestic flights, the gate also uses facial recognition technology, with its installation being partnered with the airport’s chosen biometric provider Atkins, to verify that the passenger boarding the aircraft either entered the airport through the front door or has been through a UK Border Force check since arriving on an international flight. The self-boarding solution also includes a webbased administration programme, PaxCheck, that allows for management of the gates and sends reports of passengers and when they passed through – allowing for faster boarding, and fewer staff. This also means airport and airline management can have live stats on the numbers of passengers passing through the gates in any given period, to ensure compliance with government and travel guidelines.

Access control, door entry and CCTV for new care home Jewish Care has had access control, door entry and CCTV technology installed to help create a safe and secure environment for residents living in Anita Dorfman House, a new 64-bed care home facility recently erected at its Sandringham care and community hub in Stanmore. Phase 1 of the project saw the MEPH contractor Harvey Group, award a contract to South London system integrator WLS, to install a Paxton Net2 access control and door entry system with the objective of ensuring that Jewish Care has strict control as to who is able to enter the accommodation block or gain access to its sensitive areas.
Securing plant control rooms for Loughborough University Loughborough University has selected the Assa CLIQ Remote system from the Assa Abloy Door Hardware Group to help secure its plant control rooms. With more than 18,000 students at Loughborough University for 2018-19, the CLIQ Remote technology has been used across the

Paxton proximity card readers and door entry panels have been installed at the new care home’s five entrances which, together with 55 door entry handsets deployed throughout the building, allow the reception and security personnel to monitor all access control events. They are able to do so with the help of the Net2 software platform run on a desktop PC. WLS has also installed over 60 high definition 4-megapixel network Dahua dome cameras at locations both within and around the building to help detect intruders as well as visually verify access control activity. In addition, automated barriers will shortly be installed at the site’s entrance. Linked to the CCTV system and triggered by ANPR analytics, the barriers help care home management control vehicle access to the site. “We go to great lengths to ensure our clients feel safe and this is particularly important as many of them have disabilities, mental health needs or live with dementia,” said Lindsay Long, Facilities Manager at Jewish Care. “Investing in access control, door entry and CCTV solutions was therefore considered to be an essential requirement. The combined solution is enabling us to deter and stop any unwanted visitors from entering the building, as well as track and record people as they move around the building, without causing any inconvenience or disruption to colleagues, clients and genuine visitors.” A second phase of the project which is due to be completed by the end of 2020 will see WLS expand the security systems to cover the care home’s new independent living and communal facilities. site for a range of different applications, including teaching laboratories and offices. Loughborough University can program and update each key remotely, removing or granting access privileges for the key holder in real time. This allows only those with the necessary authority at the university to enter a plant control room. Furthermore, the system removes the security risks associated with lost or stolen keys, eliminating the time and cost spent on replacing a mechanical lock. For staff that have access to these areas and then leave the university, their access rights can be removed by using the system’s web-based interface, ensuring ex-employees and contractors never pose a security risk. CLIQ Remote also provides a full audit trail for assured peace of mind around who has accessed the plant control rooms and – because the locks are powered by a battery inside the programmable key – no extra wiring is required when installing the system. Phil Sheppard, Senior Clerk of Works at Loughborough University, said: “For us, a big advantage to CLIQ Remote is that its electronics effectively extend the patent of the key indefinitely. The system cannot be copied, which means it provides a long-lasting access control solution.”

Salford City Council deploys CCTV outside schools Salford City Council is installing Videalert CCTV enforcement cameras to capture vehicles parking on the keep clear markings outside schools at the beginning and end of each day. The contract was awarded following an open tender and cameras are initially being installed at four schools where irresponsible parking has been identified as being a major safety risk. This is the first installation of CCTV cameras at schools throughout the Greater Manchester region. Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety at Salford City Council, said: “We are committed to increasing safety on the roads around schools and are taking the lead in Greater Manchester by deploying CCTV cameras outside schools. Llangollen, Wales. A combination of commercial and residential fire systems was required for the installation so Allied Fire & Escapes, installed a CAST XFP addressable fire systems to protect the ground floor retail units and interfaced it to three Hush Pro domestic fire systems to safeguard the residential dwellings on the first floor. John Westerman, Director at Allied said: “Each domestic dwelling is fitted with a Hush Pro controller connected to a series of Hush Pro smoke detectors, base sounders and heat detectors – all interfaced via Hush Pro’s CAST Landlord Interfaces – to the CAST XFP communal/landlord system. “We specified Hush Pro as it offers higher levels of fire protection over the Grade D unmonitored battery alarm systems typically used in domestic installations. As a fully-monitored BS 5839-6 Grade C system, Hush Pro reports open and short circuit faults and operation faults back to the CAST fire panel and allows management and maintenance companies to remotely monitor the system. In the event of an emergency, Hush Pro relays information to the C-TEC CAST panel to notify building management.” they have nothing to fear from the cameras or enforcement officers. I would be very happy to see no penalty notices issued at all because that would mean everyone is respecting the law and keeping our children safe.” The Videalert solution automates the capture of video evidence and number plates of vehicles stopping in keep clear zones without any manual intervention. It uses video analytics to only capture vehicles that actually commit an offence by being stationary in a defined ‘watch area’ and exceed the ’watch time’. Video evidence packs are automatically generated and transmitted to the council for review before any PCNs are processed or generated. The cameras are fully re-deployable and Videalert will be working with the council to move them to other schools as compliance levels improve.
