here’s an old adage that goes along the lines of “when you use a professional tradesperson you are not just paying for their time and materials, you are paying for their expertise”. It’s a statement that applies exceedingly well in the world of security system installations as outlinedin a recent court case that could leave one DIY-er severely out of pocket. In early October a judge ruled that security cameras and a Ring doorbell installed by Oxfordshire homeowner Jon Woodard "unjustifiably invaded" the privacy of his neighbour Dr Mary Fairhurst and ultimately broke data laws and contributed to harassment. Even though Mr Woodard installed the devices in good faith as a deterrent against burglars he now faces a hefty fine, believed to be in the region of up to £100,000. The fine is in relation to a video doorbell and a surveillance camera he set up, one to record visitors and one to keep an eye on his car in the car park. Unfortunately in setting up the systems he failed to take into consideration that he was capturing the movements of people visiting his neighbour plus he a had a considerable view into Dr Fairhurst’s back garden via the Wi-Fi camera fitted to his shed. The doctor only found out about the installation when Mr Woodard was showing her around the renovations to his house and was "alarmed and appalled" to discover the shed camera providing footage being monitored on his smartphone. Following a series of disputes the doctor moved out of her home. Judge Melissa Clarke said the video images and audio files that the Ring doorbell and cameras captured of the neighbour were her personal data. The ruling stated that the devices’ ability to capture conversations at ranges of between 40ft and 68ft (12m-20m) away was excessive. “The extent of range to which these devices can capture audio is well beyond the range of video that they capture, and in my view cannot be said to be reasonable for the purpose for which the devices are used by the defendant, since the legitimate aim for which they are said to be used, namely crime prevention, could surely be achieved by something less,” said the Judge. At the time of going to press we await the final decision of the court, with Mr Woodard potentially facing bankruptcy. Meanwhile Amazon has urged Ring owners to be aware when fitting devices saying: “We strongly encourage our customers to respect their neighbours’ privacy and comply with any applicable laws when using their Ring product.” It is not the fault of the Ring technology that this court case happened it is purely down to the installation and the fact that the DIY units were fitted by someone unaware of the laws regarding surveillance and personal data. Security alarm industry legend Chris Brookes passed away in October. Known to many for his roles at Scantronic and CSL his forward-thinking approach to security sales and business development made him an innovator of the sector. Back in the 1970’s, Chris Brookes was one of the people who took the global alarm system components industry into a new dimension. In 1978, then only 22 years-old, Chris created an embryonic business with fellow pioneer David Lineham in the back-bedroom of the Lineham house in Hillingdon, moving shortly to Wembley and then on to Perivale. Both worked at Sesco in West Drayton where they teamed up with David Snook, an RAF engineer, to develop the UK’s first digital communicator. This was an immediate success and one of its first customers was a Danish company, who suggested that adding the word Scan when thinking up a name for the new company, would help sales. Scantronic was born. The company’s fresh approach was an immediate hit with the UK alarm industry and let to them being asked to develop alarm panels to match and rest is history. We asked former colleague Tony Makosinski to tell us about how Chris changed the way security systems were brought to market: “Chris was always ready to break convention if he felt that it was holding back the industry’s development. Since its market introduction in 2018, Azena has grown to more than 120 employees spread across its headquarters in Munich, its technology Innovation Accelerator facility in Pittsburgh, and another development hub in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, all supporting the Azena open platform for smart cameras. The Azena platform is comprised of an open operating system for cameras and an Application Store with nearly 100 AI-enabled video analytics apps. It enables smart cameras to simultaneously run multiple apps directly

This approach resulted in those original manufacturers knocking on the door and asking for their products to be sold via Systal. “This approach was repeated in Benelux, Scandinavia, Italy and Spain and having achieved the market breakthrough for Scantronic products in each country, the distribution business was sold to Gardiners and this eventually became the basis of ADI’s European business. “After some stock market turmoil had affected the shares and Menvier acquired Scantronic in a hostile bid, Chris again showed his flair for identifying technology advances and market opportunities, he backed Simon Banks to create CSL and its success has proved how right his judgement has been.” Tony concludes: “Those of us who worked with Chris will always remember his business acumen; his ability to listen to a good idea and give you your head to try it; his loyalty to his team, but most of all, his wicked sense of humour. That often got us all into trouble with various authorities, but Chris would always smooth it out. “Farewell Boss, it was great working with you!” on the device. This month Simon Banks talks to Mark Taylor, General Manager of ECHO (Electronic Call Handling Operations). ECHO is working with the private and public security sectors to automate the transmission of alarm signalling to the blue light services. What are the latest developments in the implementation of ECHO? Earlier this year the first two Police Forces, the Metropolitan Police Service and Essex Police, issued a joint notice that they would be accepting confirmed alarm signals from their approved ARCs via ECHO from 1st October 2021. I am delighted to announce that both Police Forces were ready to accept signals from this date and many approved ARCs are now ECHO-connected to the Police. Over 100,000 Intruder and Hold-up Alarm Systems with police URNs are now being served by ECHO in the London Metropolitan and Essex Police areas. These forces are ECHO-connected via more than 20 ARCs who have completed ECHO on‐boarding and thorough systems testing. This included declaring URN counts and having their connection validated by each ECHO-connected Police Force. Over twothirds of all Intruder and Hold-up Alarm Systems registered to the Metropolitan Police, are now being received via ECHO. Which ARCs are ECHO-connected? Banham Security has been in the vanguard of this technology, having been involved with ECHO throughout early testing with the Police command and control rooms, and was the first ECHO-connected ARC, a landmark achievement. Since then, the number of ARCs who are now ECHO‐connected and validated by the Met and/or Essex Police has increased to more than 20. There is also a growing number currently engaged in testing and on‐boarding, having registered online with ECHO. For the latest status of ECHO-connected ARCs and Police Forces, please visit the website. Can you explain the role of the ECHO Platform Integrators? A key part of developing what we now know as ECHO was involving Integrators in developing the concept and delivering the necessary connectivity. Integrators with immense experience in alarm signalling were a natural choice and have provided connectivity from ARCs’ Alarm Management Systems (AMS) to ECHO, for signals to be processed and transferred directly to the despatch desks in Police control rooms. The ECHO Platform Integrators, including CSL, have played a key role in supporting the ARC configuration for signal transfer to ECHO and the return of confirmation messages. They have also provided support, communication, and education to their customers for the benefit of the wider security industry. What value does ECHO offer Installers? ECHO is transforming Intruder and Hold-up Alarm signal handling to the Police when “every second counts”. It is at the forefront of initiatives to deter crime and facilitate a faster Police response. Where Police Forces are ECHO-connected this is a huge benefit to Installers, as they can now provide their customers with a complete Police response alarm solution. Superseding the traditional telephone communication between ARCs and Police Control Rooms, ECHO improves police response times by 1-4 minutes, enabling the more efficient and effective deployment of Police resources to alarmed premises. For approved installers, ECHO is a clear tangible commercial and performance benefit. When received in Police control rooms via ECHO, alarm signals are posted directly to Police dispatch desks without further question. The ECHO-routed signal is effectively prioritised as it jumps a verification process that would otherwise be required, saving time in police response. Access to ECHO is only available to approved installers who are recognised by the Police, who install and maintain approved systems monitored 24/7 by approved ARCs. Approved security system designs and installations differentiate themselves from other solutions which rely on the inevitably slower traditional manual 999 services.

NVRs apply AI functionality to non-AI cameras Five new Wisenet P series AI NVRs launched by Hanwha Techwin are able to apply AI metadata to images captured by most non-AI Wisenet cameras, allowing users to quickly and accurately search for people and vehicles. The licence-free Deep Learning AI video analytics onboard the NDAA compliant NVRs offer a wide range of search criteria including, for example, looking for people of a certain age group or gender, as well as whether they are wearing glasses or carrying a bag. Similarly, a search for vehicles can be narrowed down to those of a particular colour and whether they are a bicycle, bus, car, motorbike or truck. The NVRs can also be set up to trigger real-time alarm notifications if an object is detected. Selected bullet, fixed, PTZ, 360° fisheye, multi-directional and thermal cameras from the Wisenet X, P, Q and T series, are among the long list of cameras supported by the new NVRs. In addition, as is the case with 32 and 64 channel Wisenet X NVRs, the new devices are able to support all the features built into the Wisenet P series AI cameras, including the classification and detection of faces and licence plates. he DH-IPC-HDW3549H-ASPV-S3 is a 5MP full-colour fixed-focal eyeball WizSense network camera. It is the latest in the company’s TiOC (three- in-one camera) line which integrates 24/7 full-colour monitoring, active deterrence and AI into one solution. It is IP67 protection rated with a sturdy metal casing, with an operational temperature range stated as -40°C to +60°C. Optional junction box, wall, ceiling extender and pole mounts are available.

Getting started The camera is PoE fed, 2.5W basic to 8.0W maximum with all lights and alarm sounder operational. Alternatively, the camera can be supplied with 12v DC at 2.5 to 7.3W. The multi-way connector lead has an RJ45 network connector along with a 12v power jack, a pair of phono (RCA) sockets for audio in and out, and a four-way flying lead for alarm input an output and associated ground connections. By default, the camera is not DHCP enabled and has an address of 192.168.1.108. This can be discovered on the network using the Dahua “ConfigTool.exe” program that is used to initialise the camera and set the required administration password. Once initialised, the camera can then be browser connected to set a suitable static IP address and begin configuration. When first set to a UK location, the camera uses GMT, but Daylight-Saving Time dates can then be entered and the function enabled in System, General, Date and Time setting through

Menu options The HDW3549 has a familiar Dahua web browser page with Main option tabs down the left-hand side of the window for Camera, Network, Event, Storage, System, and Information. The page can be called up with all major browsers including Microsoft Edge, Microsoft IE11, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. However, the IE11 browser gives top right-hand icons for Digital Zoom, Triple Snapshot, Record and Talk in addition to the Relay-out, Warning Light, Alarm, Snapshot, and Audio on all browsers. The Camera tab accesses all video and audio settings such as Main and Sub stream settings, Day / Night illumination and profiles. The Network tab is used for all TCP/IP and Port settings including, PPPoE, DDNS, SMTP, UPnP, Bonjour, Multicast, 802.1x, QOS, along with P2P, ONVIF, and RTMP. The Event tab opens the Video and Smart Motion Detection setting pages. Smart Motion, IVS, Alarm, Abnormality and Disarming. A graphical display of signal level simplifies Audio alarm sensitivity and threshold setting. The Storage tab accesses Scheduling, Recording destination and Control method. It is also used for formatting the micro-SD card for first use. The System tab access General Time & Date settings including NTP server address, User Account details, Safety (enabling of services such as ONVIF and HTTPS), Factory Defaulting, firmware management plus maintenance options such as auto-reboot timing. The Information tab shows relevant version details, Log files and Online User data. Four areas of Privacy masking are available, and four regions of interest can be set for bandwidth limited image transmission.

Performance

A very capable Eyeball style dome that has a wide range of features to help detect and deter intruders, with extensive cyber security settings

The 1/2.7”, 5MP sensor has a maximum resolution of 2592(H) x 1944(V) pixels which is only available on the Main stream. This gives it a 4:3 aspect ratio that does not necessarily match the majority of modern display formats. As an alternative a 4MP 2560 x 1520 setting can be used to provide a 16:9 format output. This adds a minimal amount to the horizontal view but loses some from the top and bottom of the full imaging area. The 2.8mm F1.0 lens has a viewing angle of 103°(H) x 53°(V) at full resolution, a 3.6 mm alternative is available with 81°(H) x 43°(V). The camera supports up to three video streams with the ‘Main’ stream having five resolution options from the maximum down to 1280 x 720. The highest resolution has a frame rate up to 20 fps and all others up to 25. Sub-stream 1 offers 704 x 576 (D1), 640 x 480 (VGA) or 352 x 288 (CIF). Up to 25 fps is available with a default of 20. Sub-stream 2 is disabled by default and offers 1920 x 1080 (1080p), 1280 x 720 (720p), 704 x 576 (D1), or 640 x 480 (VGA). 1080p mode is limited to 12 fps with all others up to 25 with a default of 12. All streams support encoding to H.265, H.264H, H.264B or H.264, while substream 1 additionally supports MJPEG. Sub-stream 2 gives an option to “Video Clip” the image to feed just an area of interest. A small video window is shown to allow the scene of interest to be selected. At 1080P this is a simple 16:9 box of half the screen area that can be moved around, and for 720p it is moveable and scalable. The D1 and VGA options allow the 4:3 box to be moved and resized. The camera has two-way audio channels with a built-in microphone or Line Input selectable. Audio output is fed to the internal speaker or via the Line Output cable. This allows good voice

communication with the control site to notify or warn intruders or to communicate with out-ofhours visitors. Alternatively, a range of prerecorded messages or an alert siren sound can be alarm initiated providing a clear automated message from its downward facing speaker. Additional messages and sounds can be recorded and uploaded to the camera using 16 bit .wav format files. The camera provides good colour images at very low light levels with built-in visible lighting available if there is no natural light and infrared for extreme low light performance. The 120dB dynamic range gives good scene contrast. Dahua state a sensitivity of 0.003 Lux. There are two apertures beneath the lens that are used for the illumination. A visible LED at the right-hand side provides a warm-white (yellowish) light that ensures good colour rendition. Its brightness can be adjusted from 0 to 100 or set to automatically adjust to scene content. Additionally, an infrared LED is included for low-light, monochrome images if required. This has a similar level range. The camera supports Scene settings that can be used for different requirements or scheduled. While not obtrusive, the light gives a clear even illumination of the scene and reaches the specified 30 metre range. The left-hand side LED pair is used to provide a warning light that alternately flashes Red and Blue while active with an adjustable flash rate and duration. The Alarm configuration is relatively straightforward and supports all of the usual features such as Tripwire and Intrusion. When motion detection is set to detect just humans and / or vehicles, it correctly ignores animals moving around the field of view. When used with the Dahua Smart NVR, the camera supports intelligent search capabilities.

Conclusion A very capable Eyeball style dome that has a wide range of features to help detect and deter intruders, with extensive cyber security settings.

It comes with a standby SIM as a backup to safeguard the system, if the active SIM fails. Both SIMs operate on an independent network from the other for total resilience. It is designed for both residential and commercial premises as an affordable upgrade from a digital communicator to secure signalling.

Getting started Provided with the MiniAir 2 is a quick instruction guide that provides detail on how to connect the unit to a system in multiple different ways. The paper handout is also easily found on CSL DualCom’s website under the associated product. The unit is constructed of a hard plastic material and is pre-installed with a fixed fly lead for easier installation. The product is more than suitable for any in-panel installation. The unit can be set up to suite most applications where signalling is required. The

The overall performance of the device works well. The device was quick to respond when connected directly to the systems digi-modem or set up for dial capture, but short delays where experienced when trying to carryout a remote arm/disarm using a keyswitch zone.

A perfect solution to the PSTN switch over/off as it means that existing systems that rely solely on PSTN signalling can continue to do so without the expense of upgrading the customers control equipment Conclusion As the UK are currently undergoing a digital change over, replacing the existing analogue infra-structure for an “All IP” one, PSTN lines up and down the country are being affected – this device is fit for purpose to help adapt older systems and legacy systems to the change, as well as being used for new installation. It is a very good, quick solution to ensuring that your premises has protection. The product overall is great. It is a perfect solution to the PSTN switch over/off as it means that existing systems that rely solely on PSTN signalling can continue to do so without the expense of upgrading the customers control equipment.

he G10402POE-AT is a six ports full Gigabit PoE switch, designed for the application of high definition network security surveillance systems. The PoE switch provides 4 Gigabit downlink PoE ports support 802.3at and 2 Gigabit uplink ports. The total PoE power output is up to 120 watts. It’s reported to be widely used in with security monitoring systems, communications, transportation and multimedia network teaching systems.

Getting started The instruction info is basic and only provides an overview of the switches output and input requirements. The switch is unmanaged, so requires next to no set-up other than connecting it to its power adapter.

Performance

A nice looking switch that is compact and versatile. The biggest issue with it is the oversized 2.5A, 52V power adapter Pros: • Compact • Easily Installed • Dual Gigabit Upload Ports • High Watt Output

The switch worked well and provides a more than suitable 120W worth of output – meaning that you are able to power multiple Security and 3rd party products from this switch without any concerns. It provides 6 full gigabit ports – 4 of which are Gigabit download POE ports and 2 Gigabit upload ports which had shown to transfer data quickly and without and issues or data loss. The switch had an array of Surveillance and IT equipment connected to it during testing, as well as being the middle ground between 2 additional 8 way POE switches connected back to an NVR.

Cons: • Similar to others in the price range • Very large PSU required for the unit – this will be difficult to hide

Conclusion The switch and provided power adapter is very well constructed. The aluminium frame provides a strong base and the blue Perspex accents make the overall appearance look good. The Ports themselves are solid and do not provide any “wiggle” or loose behaviour. This product can be used for most network applications within the Fire and Security Sector – primarily a CCTV and Video surveillance application due to its high wattage output and data transfer rates. It is also very compact and would not be out of place among other standard IT equipment. Overall, the product works well. It is a nice looking switch that is compact and versatile. The biggest issue with it is the oversized 2.5A, 52V power adapter – you better hope that this is not stored on a desktop and in a cabinet instead. It is a high performing un-managed switch for its price range, and will find no problem powering and communicating with multiple high wattage POE devices at the same time.

Bosch – Flexidome NDE-3503-AL Part of the Bosch Flexidome IP 3000i IR range, this fixed dome camera is impact resistant to IK10 with IP66 protection rating and has a 1/2.9” 5MP CMOS sensor, 3.2 to 10mm motorised lens and a range of “Essential” video analytic functions. It has a diameter of 137mm and height of 122.5mm. It has an operating temperature of -30°C to +50°C. Review: A very capable dome camera with a wide range of configuration options. Score: 8.5/10

IDIS – DC-S6283HRXL The DC-S6283HRXL dome is an external IP66, IK10 rated, 1/2” CMOS 2MP Lightmaster PTZ ONVIF compliant dome with 36 times zoom lens and long range IR capability. Review: A well featured PTZ dome with simple setup, excellent optical performance and enhanced IR illumination. Score: 8/10

Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DPZ Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°. Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this. Score: 8/10

Luxrite – SPR0DHIPD80 The SPRO DHIPD80 “Turret” style camera is an IP67 externally rated 8MP (4k) camera with a 2.8mm fixed lens, “ColourNight” operation and Active Deterrence capability. It has a built-in speaker and microphone along with external audio connection and alarm input and output. Review: A very sensitive “Turret” style camera with high definition and some excellent features for deterring intruders. Score: 9/10 24

Hikvision – ColorVu DS-2CD2087G2-LU This IP67, 8MP bullet camera is from the Hikvision ColorVu range. It is designed for 24-hour colour imagery with warm-white visible LED illumination support for zero light scenes. A wide 2.8mm lens version is standard with 4mm and 6mm options. Review: An extremely sensitive 8MP high-resolution camera with advanced detection capabilities, 24-hour colour capability and a wide range of security features. Score: 9/10

Tyco – Illustra Multi Sensor Dome The Illustra Flex multi-sensor camera provides four 4MP camera views from a single location over a single network cable using just one IP address. The IP66 cameras can be flexibly positioned within the housing for full 360° coverage. Review: An interesting approach to the provision of multi-camera highly detailed wide-angle views from a single housing with straightforward installation and configuration. Score: 8/10

Hanwha Techwin – Wisenet XNV-8081RE The XNV-8081RE is from the Wisenet X range and incorporates a PoE extender capability to simplify cabling infrastructure when installing a second camera within 80 metres of an existing position. The dome is based on a 1/2.8” 5MP CMOS sensor with a stated 0.07 Lux colour sensitivity and IR LED monochrome illumination. Review: A very installer friendly ONVIF compliant external dome camera with ease of set-up and an ability to simplify network cabling when retrofitting for additional cameras, installing two cameras to a single location or when needing to install an adjacent PoE device such as lighting or PIR detection. Score: 9.5/10

Dahua – DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 The DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 is promoted as a 2MP Starlight IR Dual PTZ external network camera. It is from the Dahua WizMind range and is based on 2 x 1/2.8” CMOS sensors, one with a wide angle view and one with a 25x optical zoom lens. “Deep Learning algorithms” are used to support detection functions such as smart tracking of vehicles or humans with automatic filtering of false alarms. . Review: An interesting ONVIF compliant dome with high sensitivity and capable of tracking subjects while still maintaining an overview of the scene of interest. Good differentiation of targets to track humans and/or vehicles while preventing false alarms. Score: 8/10

Milesight – MS-C5375-EPC This IP67 and IK10 rated motorized 5MP mini dome boasts a number of features including AI analytics, Smart IR, which combines high beam and low beam to adjust IR intensity to suit different lighting conditions, plus functions such as HLC (highlight compensation) and defog. Review: The build quality is superb, the camera is well made. There are real signs of quality with this camera that include a solid casing throughout, connection points do not flex or move and all pivot points on the camera and lens move fluidly and are not flimsy. Score: 7.5/10

Hikvision – AX Pro The AX Pro can be purchased as a kit or individual components. The reviewed system was a DS-PWA96-Kit1-WE kit with the seven parts as listed. It is a wireless Grade 2 alarm system that can be used stand-alone or integrated into a management system. Additional modules are available to link to home automation products and systems. The DS-PWA96-M-WE panel supports up to 32 areas and 96 zones. Review: A compact wireless alarm system with extended battery duration and flexible remote management. The product is well suited to central monitoring with a range of protocols supported. A reasonably wide and increasing range of detector types with scope for integration with home-automation systems. Score: 8.5/10

Pyronix – MCEXTERNAL-WE This tamperproof and weatherproof contact extends perimeter protection applications to securing sheds, garages, gates etc, with remote voice push notification alerts via the smart device apps, HomeControl2.0 and ProControl+. Featuring an IP66 rating, this discreet and versatile Grade 2 device is described as easy to fit and calibrate. Review: The product is constructed very well. The casing is made of a hard polycarbonate with a deep grey (anthracite) finish which makes the door contact look great. The overall performance of the product did not disappoint during testing as it managed to maintain a high signal strength at all times as well as being very responsive. Score: 8.5/10

Ajax – MotionCam Outdoor The Ajax MotionCam Outdoor is an IP 55 rated combined external PIR sensor with inbuilt capture camera for use with the latest Ajax Hubs that support visual verification. The detector has settings for the image resolution and number of pictures sent on alarm. After dark the unit has two highintensity infrared LEDs to provide illumination for the camera’s monochrome mode. Review: A very simple to install and manage, extended battery life external PIR detector for Ajax based Hub 2 systems, with the advantage of visual verification. Score: 9/10

2N – IP Verso Intercom The door unit is IP54 rated, with IK08 impact rating (IK07 for display). It is produced in modules that can be extended to allow for numeric entry keypads, card readers and button arrays. It supports voice and video communication calls to mobile phones and tablets and can be integrated into security systems. The indoor viewer (right) is a 7” 1024 x 600 pixel touch screen device that can be desk or wall mounted. Review: A flexible system with great potential for mobile, remote, or central monitoring station use. It is potentially let down by its lack of worked examples for some of the commissioning settings, but manufacturer support should help overcome this. Score: 7.5/10

MaxxOne – M1P-IPC-080 A combination test unit for both analogue and IP CCTV systems. Its touch-screen control allows selection of a wide range of functions such as camera testing and set up, wireless network signal strength monitoring and multi-meter functions all in one compact unit. Review: The M1P-IPC-080 provides comprehensive test features and should limit the need to carry multiple test items to site. A very useful addition to the installation or commissioning engineer’s toolbox. Score: 9/10 26

Texecom – Capture Capture motion detectors are intended for use in a wide variety of professional security applications. With a choice of EN Grade 2 wired or wireless connectivity, wall or ceiling mounting, and a choice of detection technologies including dual element, quad element or dual technology sensing, Capture suits a wide variety of security environments. Review: The ease of connection with a range of switchable, built-in EOL resistor values simplifies the installation process. The potential for device branding will likely be appealing to independent installers. Score: 9/10

Zyxel – GS1350-6HP A “Smart Managed Switch for Surveillance”, the 6-port version has five PoE enabled ports and one SFP socket. All ports support up to 1Gb data rate with a 12Gb/s switching capacity and a 60-Watt PoE budget. 8, 16 and 24 port versions are available, each with 2 SFP sockets and PoE power of 130W, 250W and 375W respectively. Review: A very well featured security industry network switch with specialised surveillance features, that allows a high degree of network security and remote management when suitably configured. Score: 9.5/10

Camect – NVR The Camect NVR is a Smart Network Video Recorder using AI routines to identify specific subjects within the scene and to prevent false alarms. This model is primarily aimed at mid to high-end residential and small commercial properties Review: A very interesting, small intelligent recording device that does not rely on “Cloud” analysis or storage and with ease of installation and management. Score: 8/10

Satel – Agate The Satel Agate unit is an externally rated (IP54) “curtain” format intrusion detector designed for perimeter protection. It utilises two sensors, passive infrared and microwave, and meets the requirements of Grade 3 when wall mounted indoors. Review: A compact dual-tech curtain device that can be discreetly installed to provide perimeter intrusion detection. Score: 8.5/10

HKC – RF-Touch The RF-Touch wireless intruder keypad is among the latest additions to the SecureWave product line. The keypad is produced in either a black or white finish and it can be supplied with optional replacement facia trims in Black, White, Chrome and Grey. It is compliant with EN50131-3 Grade 2 Class II. Review: With an anticipated battery life of over three years in normal operation this is a very stylish compact grade 2 wireless alarm keypad to add to the HKC intrusion detection product range. Score: 8.5/10

What would be a typical project for you? Anything including domestic, retail, commercial, industrial and Care Homes. I joined A.Alexander & Son (Electrical) in 2019, to head up a new fire and security division to complement their established electrical and mechanical divisions. We trade under the name Alexander & Bell (Fire & Security). The goal of the division was to provide a one stop shop for the large number of main contractors the company has worked with for several years. We have somewhat specialised in the care home sector having completed six new homes and several refurbs within the two and a half years I have been with the company. All the while building up our domestic and commercial customer bases. Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers? For intruder systems we stick to Honeywell Galaxy and Pyronix. The broad range of products provided allows us to install the most appropriate solution for any customer requirements. The Enforcer system has proven to be extremely popular with domestic customers with the easy to set up and use mobile app being very appealing. For fire alarms our preference is for Advanced control panels and Hochiki devices. Both products provide engineer friendly interfaces and installation advantages. Dahua is our go to for CCTV installs, with a large range of high-definition full colour cameras and easy to navigate NVRs it is a big hit with clients and engineers alike. We stick to Paxton for access control – it is a proven performer in this category and provides solutions for all our requirements.

Working in the care sector we have installed a number of nurse call systems with the C-Tec Quantec system being our preference for hard wired systems and Aidcall for wireless systems. What is the best thing about working in this industry? For me the best thing is delivering quality systems and solutions to our clients that fulfil their needs. I have always been a great believer in listening to the customer and providing a system that they actually want and need. I pride myself in going that extra mile to ensure that happens and in providing the best after care service and maintenance for the systems. Is third party accreditation beneficial to you? It is extremely important. The first thing I insisted on when joining the company was to work towards gaining NSI Silver accreditation, which we achieved

in our first year. We then followed that up by gaining NSI BAFE Silver in the second year. For me it is vital to demonstrate to our clients our competence and that our installations are to a high standard and conform to relevant standards and being NSI accredited achieves this. The goal over the next twelve months is to achieve NSI Gold accreditation.

Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting? I do believe that there is an engineer skills shortage across the industry as a whole. However, I am extremely fortunate to have built up a great squad of engineers, with no leaver turnover. We have also recently started a fire and security apprentice. As a company we believe that investing in the future and growing your own skilled workforce is the way forward. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Not really, with 35 years’ experience I tend to foresee any issues before they arise and nip them in the bud. Equipment is also so much more reliable and user friendly now than it was when I started so this removes a lot of problems that you would perhaps see in previous years.

What is the security/fire industry’s biggest myth? That fire and security systems are always far too expensive – nothing could be further from the truth. There are so many products on the market that there are systems available for every budget that would greatly enhance the fire safety and security of homes and businesses. What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? Across the business there are a number of devices

that are becoming more popular, including appcontrolled devices such as Nest/Hive Heating, lighting controls etc. On the security side of things Enforcer intruder alarms with mobile app and CCTV with remote viewing are proving to be popular with our customer base. What would make your job easier? Engineers completing and returning paperwork in a timely manner is sometimes a challenge. However, we have recently implemented a new tablet-based system for engineers to view and update their jobs, which has streamlined the process greatly. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? Nothing springs to mind, there are so many products on the market developed by people a lot smarter than me I am sure everything is covered. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? Not to take on too much yourself. Delegate and trust the people around you to perform as you would expect. Praise and reward those deserving, encourage and advise those falling short and above all do not take yourself too seriously – life really is too short. Will England ever win the World Cup again? You can never say never, but I don’t think they will. Would be ironic if they won in 2066 though, would save the commentators changing their tune! If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? I would invest in renewable energy solutions for the business, home, and car. I believe climate change is is a serious issue and individuals and businesses should be proactive in doing all they can to change the way they live and work to reduce the impact they make on the environment around us.

Analysing analytics in the UK There is a difference between what you can do with analytics and what is actually being done. A recent report gives us an insight into how the UK is approaching the adoption of analytic functionality n our September edition we highlighted the genuine uses for analytics, ones that were actually being installed and bringing in benefits, rather than some of the more ‘pie in the sky’ ideas you’ll see coming in from marketing departments that you could try to do with the technology. But of those solutions we covered how are the analytics being adopted and utilised in the UK? Fortunately NW Systems has carried out a survey with market researchers Opinium to find out. According to the survey, four out of every ten (41%) of England-based medium and large-sized businesses which are running CCTV systems have already deployed facial recognition analytics in their systems to capture human faces and compare images to human face databases with a view to identifying matches for access control, event security or for public safety purposes. One in six (16%) of CCTV system owners admitted to having access to this capability on their system but not yet going live with it. Over a third of CCTV system owners (36%) in

businesses with over 50 employees had already deployed some event or behavioural recognition analytics. Examples given included spotting loitering or highlighting abandoned bags (bags with no person in close proximity). A further 22% believed that they had this capability in their systems but had not yet turned it on. Just over a third (34%) of CCTV system owners questioned had already deployed Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to capture number plates at perimeter barriers for example and the same number of system owners (34%) had deployed Video Motion Detection (VMD) to help reduce their system’s video storage requirements by only recording when motion is detected in front of a camera. One in five (20%) claimed to have access to ANPR analytics in their systems but not to have turned it on yet. A further 27% claimed to have VMD capability in their systems which they have not yet activated. Exactly a third (33.33%) of CCTV system owners in England claimed to have deployed

object tracking which is a relatively new capability which enables security teams to track individuals from camera to camera through a large site in ‘auto track’ mode. Nearly a third (32%) had deployed Objection Detection or Object Classification to help the system distinguish between humans, vehicles, animals, swaying trees, shadows, rain, luggage, water, roads etc. 23% confirmed that they had this capability in their systems but had not yet turned it on. Only marginally less (31.6%) claimed to have already deployed Directional Detection analytics to detect which direction an object or person is moving over a line. A further 28% claimed to have this capability at their disposal but not to have turned it on. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) analytics, heavily used to read the identification numbers on parcels and other goods in transit, has been deployed by 31% of England’s businesses in NW Security’s recent business survey. A further 35% claimed that they already had this capability in their systems but had not yet put it to work. Business intelligence-led video analytics was not far behind in terms of adoption. For example, heat mapping which is commonly used to detect crowds forming before events or analyse the busiest areas of a shop has already been deployed by 28% of CCTV system owners. Nearly another quarter (23%) claimed to have this capability at their disposal but had not yet configured it or made it live. 28% had turned on people counting analytics on their systems. NW Security discovered some of these people had adopted this capability to monitor room capacity levels for COVID Safety reasons. Nearly as many, 26%, thought they had people counting analytics available in their

system but had not yet made it live. Over a quarter (27%) recorded that they were using Facial Detection analytics and a further quarter (25%) had deployed traffic monitoring analytics in their systems. While 22% of system owners recorded making crowd density analytics live on their systems. Even higher numbers (24%) confirmed they had access to crowd density measurement analytics but had not yet deployed it. Frank Crouwel, Managing Director of NW Security, commented on the results saying: “We have been surprised by the level of adoption of even fairly sophisticated video analytics adoption across CCTV system owners. That said, more and more camera vendors are offering analytics at the edge. Many video analytics types are present in over half of existing systems and seven different types of analytics have already seen over 30% adoption across our total base of over 152 CCTV system owners of medium and large-sized businesses across England.” Josh Woodhouse, Lead Analyst at video surveillance market research company Novaira Insights added: “Basic features like motion detection and virtual tripwire have been embedded in most cameras for many years. However, it is an ongoing trend where more analytics workload can be achieved at the edge. “An increasing number of new cameras sold feature more advanced analytics like event or behaviour recognition. It is estimated that 43% of all professional grade network security cameras shipped in the world in 2020 featured these more advanced analytics. This is forecast to nearly double to 81% by 2025, leading to cameras having the functionality for advanced analytics such as object detection or facial recognition as standard capabilities.”

Who took part in the survey? The survey was completed by IT or operations decision makers of firms with more than 50 employees based in England, between 18th and 28th May 2021. Respondents were heavily-weighted towards senior operations as well as security and IT heads of mediumsized firms (with 50 to 249 staff ) and large businesses (with 250 or more staff ): 25 per cent were IT managers, 26 per cent IT directors, 16 per cent CTOs and 7 per cent CIOs. 11 per cent were operations managers and 8 per cent operations directors. The balance held different roles but were still physical security system decision makers.

It’s competition time! David Scott, Managing Director of Skills for Security discusses WorldSkills and Engineers of Tomorrow, the UK's only fire and security competition

his month will see twelve of the best apprentice engineers go head-to-head to be crowned UK's Engineers of Tomorrow (EoT) and WorldSkills (WSUK) champions. The competition, which encompasses two separate events – one for electronic security installers and the other for installers of fire safety devices – aims to help tackle the growing engineering skills gap and attract and retain the next generation of security and fire systems installers. This year saw over 180 entrants take part across the two competitions, a number only set to increase as the competition continues to grow. Despite continued disruption due to the pandemic, the 2021 event is in full flow, with the finalists now having been revealed. The standards were once again extremely high this year. The final of this year’s competition will take place at Skills for Security in Warrington. Skills for Security are contracted with WSUK as competition organising partners to run and manage the event on behalf of the fire and security sector. Skills for Security, as the leading sector apprenticeship and training provider, works closely with partners throughout the sector to ensure the competition is delivered above industry standards. The competition is a gruelling two-day event, where the apprentices need to survey, design, plan, install, commission, repair, maintain, and audit fire and security systems. The competition is designed in such a way to be a level above the standard of even the best engineers in the UK. The purpose of this is that the apprentices are challenged above their normal day to day duties. To do this, they will be using the latest technologies, such as Texecom Cloud, CSL Gemini and HIK Connect to carry out full remote maintenance and diagnostic activities throughout the competition.

SSAIB and the NSI auditors will work closely with lead judge Darrell Gilmour (SfS) to assess and judge this year's competition. "Having the leading inspectorates from both the NSI and SSAIB really adds great value to the judging process” says Darrell, “I am both thrilled and excited to be leading this year judging for the competition." The fire and security sector is well-represented at this year's competition with all four nations being involved in the competition, we have finalists from Scotland, Northern Ireland, the North West of England and the South. Apprentices will receive grant funding through WSUK and Skills for Security to attend the competition (for security competition only).

Developing new installer talent This month PSI talks to Donna Doughty of Zicam about the company’s experiences in taking on apprentices for the first time and the benefits of nurturing security installer talent icam, which is celebrating 25 years in business this year, has announced that is has taken on four apprentices marking the first time in the company’s history that it has gone down the apprenticeship route to recognise and nurture installer talent. Based out of the Dudley office the new recruits will shadow engineers on site and support Zicam’s engineers whilst learning in areas such as: • Installing all aspects of security systems, to ensure clients’ needs are met • Completing installations to a very high standard • Dealing with in CCTV, intruder alarms and access control • Dealing with in domestic, commercial and industrial installations. We spoke to Donna Doughty, Director at Zicam to find out why the business is now a supporter of apprenticeships and the benefits of bringing new blood into the sector.

How important are apprentice engineers for you? In a word – very! It has been tough for young people with Covid restrictions, and it is nice to be able to give something back. To be able to offer the opportunity to work in a company like

How easy is it to find and take on apprentices? Any stumbling blocks? CCTV security is a niche industry, so it was difficult to source a provider which met all of our requirements. Security and surveillance technology is rapidly evolving and is going through a transition where it requires increased skills in the field of IT and systems - which is where Skills for Security could assist. I expect in future the amount of providers will increase to help bridge the gap in the industry.

What is your on-site training programme? The engineers apprentice scheme is provided by Skills for Security, which is a classroom and hands-on split (averaging ten weeks on site shadowing engineers, then one full week of classroom-based work). Higher education isn’t the best route for everyone, and an apprenticeship offers that diversity that a lot of young people appreciate.

Have any organisations/bodies helped you along the way? In addition to Skills for Security, The Apprentice Works (who employ our Finance Apprentice Josh Marsden) have been helpful along with assistance from the Government’s website. What advice would you give to other installation companies regarding apprenticeships? Start recruiting or thinking about the roles early to make sure you get the best candidates for your role. Finding good apprenticeship provider to suit your industry requirements is also essential. 40

Security from the outside in As a security installer how can you use perimeter security to limit security loopholes? Here we discuss how securing the perimeter is key to improving the performance of any secuity installation s a reader of Professional Security Installer, you’ll already be fully aware of the value of electronic security systems when looking to improve the protection of a site or space. Specifying physical electronic deterrents, such as CCTV, will also be firmly on the radar when planning a new security strategy. But how does perimeter fencing fit in with the technology? According to Peter Jackson, MD, Jacksons Fencing, physical barriers can help achieve a better integrated security solution, and add an additional and very valuable layer to better protect people and property. “Using an integrated strategy essentially means combining all aspects of security in a layered approach that leaves no vulnerable points,” says Peter. “This can be applied to any type of site that needs protecting. The majority of buildings, from high profile Government facilities, to less conspicuous premises such as warehouses, or even residential properties will benefit from integrated security such as fencing, CCTV, alarms, and security lights.”

Bespoke solutions The type of site being specified for should give an initial idea of the type of perimeter solution required, and this can be investigated further via thorough risk assessments and surveys of

the surrounding area. From this, it’s possible to establish the strength of fencing required and any aesthetic concerns. “The fencing should match the risks raised by the assessment, including crime rates of the local area, how the area is lit at night, and the site's location,” explains Peter. “Residential developments would likely require security fencing that deters trespassing and vandalism, whilst also blending into the surroundings for an attractive finish. A data centre or utilities site, conversely, will take less consideration of aesthetics and focus on access and exit points, as well as the security rating of the fencing to ensure maximum security.”

Assessing the area The perimeter of a site will generally require security fencing. For a commercial project, this may mean installing either welded mesh or vertical bar fencing. However, for residential properties, more aesthetically pleasing timber fence panels are a popular choice. Double sided panels without rails are ideal for creating a boundary that’s difficult to climb. Before you take the leap and begin installing fencing, it is important to identify which other areas of the site need to be secured, taking additional requirements such as access or

vulnerability into consideration. For example, a commercial site such as a business park would usually need to be easily accessible during the day but secured at night. Areas such as storage compounds, waste units, machinery or other sensitive areas will require stronger security, while for other locations lower-risk security fencing such as timber fencing, demarcation fencing, or non-security rated opinions could be suitable. Specifying fencing suited to the risk level of each area will enable proportionate budget allocation. Access control and gates, where required, must be specified alongside security fencing to ensure they don’t compromise site security.

Privacy vs visibility

“The level of visibility desired will determine which security fencing styles and panels will be appropriate for the site,” advises Peter Jackson. “Security fencing also needs to work in conjunction with other security measures, such as CCTV; while solid panels may offer greater privacy, they may also create blind spots. “Vertical bar and welded mesh panels offer both high visibility and work well with CCTV, as well as offering various levels of security and privacy.” Acoustic barriers, whilst providing noise reduction, also offer the greatest privacy and strong security performance; their flat profile makes them intrinsically anti-climb due to the lack of potential hand or footholds. An additional layer of mesh is included with LPS 1175 rated options, to increase strength and resistance to attacks for high-risk properties.

The icing on the cake Security toppings can enhance the specified fencing to provide additional security. This is

necessary for areas of higher risk, for example in built up areas, but also sites adjacent to natural climbing aids, such as trees, lampposts, bollards, or other buildings close to the perimeter fence line. Even warning signs notifying passers-by of security toppings can themselves act as a deterrent. Fence toppings act both as a physical and visual deterrent to increase security levels against intrusion, vandalism, and other damage, and can include barbed wire and tape, steel spikes, and rotary systems, for fences, walls and drainpipes. Be aware that installing security fence spikes may require additional adherence to regulations and usually need to be above two metres and out of reach of the general public. Again, use them according to the risk level of the site. Using schools as an example, if it is located in a high-risk area, it may require security toppings, but there is also a need to create a welcoming environment, so we would recommend only adding them where absolutely necessary, or instead opting for an anti-climb fence.

Wear and tear For any site, investing in the longevity of the chosen security fencing will save money on costly repairs and deterioration in the long term. Look for polyester powder coating rather than traditional paint, which ensures the coating won’t chip or crack and will retain a glossy finish, or select a galvanised or zinc alloy-coated steel to protect fencing from corrosion or rust, and guarantee durability. For projects on a strict budget, cost savings can be made by avoiding specifying higher security fencing than is needed for the site. Remember that opting for fencing without a guarantee may save some money initially, but will incur costs and require replacing far sooner than fencing with a comprehensive guarantee.

Aftercare When adopting an integrated approach, maintenance of security measures needs to be factored in. After all, there's not much point in spending substantial amounts of money on security if you’re not checking regularly that it’s working. “Perimeter fencing will only ever enhance a security strategy, and when specified correctly, alongside electronic security systems, it will create a robust level of physical protection, making the site far less appealing to intruders,” concludes Peter Jackson.

ver the past 18 months, there has been an undeniable global change in the way people access work buildings and public spaces. Governments in many countries had social distancing measures in place which were crucial to fight against the spread of the pandemic. It is now possible to manage up to 1000 doors and 1000 cameras, across 100 sites anywhere in the world, via a single server with all data to and from sites encrypted using the 128-bit SSL internet standard using Paxton10 Cloud Services. Administrators can add up to 50,000 users, with no additional fees, making the system cost-effective and continuously scalable. The sites connect via simple software with an activation code to identify a Paxton10 Controller at the new site, and the system does the rest. “It is very common for all types of end customers to require a security system that covers many premises, often in completely different locations,” says Adam Stroud, Group Chief Executive at Paxton. “A chain of shops, for example, with a head office and 80 retail outlets would benefit from having a single system so that staff information only needs to be entered once, and appropriate access permissions can be set across all premises. Also, the whole estate can be managed and monitored centrally allowing greater efficiency. “For many years, businesses with multiple sites have had to choose between administering their sites independently or requiring a permanent Wide Area Network (WAN) to allow a single system to span all of their sites. Quite often, neither of these options are good enough, as they require either a significant administrative burden, or a complex and costly IT infrastructure,” says Adam. “With the Multisite functionality, we have addressed all of the time consuming and costly issues associated with other systems.”

This means access can be granted without ever removing smartphones from pockets. The app also works with a device’s existing biometric capabilities, adding extra security via personal identification. Unmanned train depots secured by Video Analytics Southeastern Rail Network operates train services between London, Kent and parts of East Sussex. It is one of the busiest networks in the country, transporting 640,000 passengers each weekday on its 392 trains, which are temporarily housed in 12 depots situated around South-East England. Some of these depots are unmanned, and therefore require intelligent security solutions. Integriti update includes biometrics and real time location tracking Access control and security system designer and manufacturer Inner Range has released the Version 21 update for its Enterprise-level system Integriti, which includes integrations with Suprema biometrics and Quuppa real time location tracking. The new integration with Suprema allows users to add thumb and face scans as access credentials, which can be used in addition to smartcards and PIN for high security with trouble-free access. The integration with Quuppa means tagged information from the Quuppa system can be associated with Integriti entities, allowing direct control of the asset from either system. The asset could be an object, or a user associated with it. The location of tagged assets can be made visible on Integriti’s schematic of the site, alongside all other access and security devices. Video, VMS and visitor security Video monitoring has enabled Canterbury Cathedral to safely open new generations of visitors nd-to-end video is protecting a new, purpose-built visitor centre at Canterbury Cathedral, part of a £25 million renovation project. The seven-year programme included the addition of a visitor centre housing retail facilities, a viewing gallery and community studio exhibition space. Systems integrator Hall & Kay Security Engineering was tasked with delivering a video solution that would combine discreet monitoring with high-performance image capture. It needed to allow for real-time monitoring, while ensuring reliable recording without data loss. And because this was part of a much wider project, the video technology also had to be easy to install – essential for avoiding project overruns in this complex, multidisciplinary construction environment. Based on previous experience, Hall & Kay recommended IDIS end-to-end tech, incorporating cameras, recorders, VMS, and essential peripherals. Also important to Canterbury Cathedral was the cybersecurity protection inherent in the technology, with its multi-layered encryptions and proprietary protocols to safeguard sensitive video data. For HD video coverage of the entrances, retail area and exhibition spaces, Hall & Kay installed IDIS Full HD IR dome cameras. The vandalresistant models come with varifocal lenses, true WDR and IR LED to deliver images in variable lighting conditions. They connect to three 16-channel DD-1216 NVRs to handle recording and deliver 480ips live view with no visible latency reported. Plug-and-play installation allowed for seamless and rapid connectivity and mutual two-factor authentication of devices streamlined cybersecurity measures. The licence-free IDIS Centre VMS gives the cathedral’s constable and his security team complete visual awareness and easy control tools for efficient management, plus the ability to configure specific user permissions to give senior staff and system administrators timely access to video footage. Furthermore, the cameras and NVRs discreetly blend with the centre’s architecture.

The need for fairer VMS pricing models By Dave Stokes, Divisional Director, Hall & Kay Completing the Welcome Centre project at Canterbury Cathedral demonstrated that to continue to grow our security division by winning new customers we need to offer VMS at a competitive price point. This was brought into focus when an existing customer contacted us because they wanted to add three third-party cameras to their existing VMS. We had to explain this meant buying a separate licence and paying what I describe as almost a penalty – around £100 to add each of those cameras as well as additional ongoing connection fees. I now view it as unfair pricing, and customers are starting to catch on. Across almost every other department of a commerical organisation, buyers have been looking closely at operating expenditure (OPEX) rather than just capital expenditure (CAPEX) for years when they compare technology. That message is now starting to get through to the security sector too. Of course, if customers need to upgrade their surveillance, they understand that for most viable solutions a level of CAPEX is inevitable. But if a customer is already analysing OPEX, we found the biggest hurdle to winning new business was the upfront and ongoing VMS license fees. Previously, customers accepted them almost as a given. But quite rightly they are now starting to ask, “Why am I paying high license fees to view a camera, and additional fees to connect one manufacturer’s camera to another’s system?” That’s a very fair question, particularly given the proliferation of IP and ONVIF. And where we identify an opportunity and those conversations aren’t happening, we’re challenging end-users to consider OPEX before they make a final decision. I advise them to look closely at ongoing licenses and connection fees, and be clear about the costs they’ll be tied into every year including any additional cost they’ll pay to add more cameras. We’re also encouraging customers to look at the bundle packages many VMS vendors offer, which mean customers are also often paying for features and functionality they don’t even need and use. When you think about this pricing model in another context it’s obvious - you would never pay a yearly subscription for features on your car that you don’t use, so why accept that with surveillance? And by challenging that old VMS pricing model, it’s helping us win new business.

Life safety system upgrade for Wycombe Hospital Fitting a new life safety system to any public space can be a complex job, but when undertaking this task in a hospital, during a pandemic, the complexity increases tenfold. When Pyrotec Fire and Security were chosen as the contractors to update an existing fire detection system at Wycombe General Hospital, this was the situation the company faced. Wycombe Hospital provides urgent treatment and planned (elective) surgery, specialist treatment for patients with heart conditions and strokes, cancer, and urological conditions along with a midwifery led unit. The project, commissioned by Buckinghamshire Health NHS Foundation Trust, was to replace an existing network of obsolete control panels and devices. Pyrotec opted for Hochiki fire detection devices to help support the project. The hospital was fitted with a network of 26 control panels, pre-programmed off site. Loop by loop, each fire zone had old devices switched out and replaced with Hochiki’s ESP Intelligent range

of addressable fire detection and alarm equipment. The range offers a sensor solution which can be adjusted for sensitivity reducing false alarms – vital for a hospital environment. Justyn Soames, lead Project Manager for this job, said of the complexities of the project: “When you are working in a hospital it is vital that the job is carefully managed to ensure there is no loss of old or new fire alarm system coverage. Therefore, it is imperative that you work with systems and devices that are simple to fit and test. “The NHS Trust we work with use Hochiki across several of their sites, so it was important for them to have consistency and familiarity, it makes the training of the system and evacuation procedures much easier for example.” The main challenge of this job was undertaking the changeover during the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sensors protecting 5-star London hotel Optex has specified and installed its Redscan RLS2020 LiDAR laser sensors at a new five-star Londoner hotel in Leicester Square. Part of the Edwardian Hotels London group, The Londoner, which opened in September 2021, is billed as the world’s first super boutique hotel. It has 350 rooms across 16 storeys including six basement levels, featuring six concept eateries, a private members club, a cinema, a wealth of meeting and event space and an entire floor dedicated to health and wellness equipped with a gym, pool and spa. The hotel has six restaurant and bar areas in total with expensive whiskeys, wines and other drinks on display 24/7 with no shutters or coverings. Given the cumulative value of the drinks behind each bar, the hotel needed to find a security solution to keep its valuable stocks protected. The solution needed to be accurate and reliable, and capable of integrating with the hotel’s existing security system, as well as being aesthetically discrete. Optex specified and installed its Redscan RLS2020 laser sensor in the ceiling at each of the seven bars. The RLS-2020 sensors provide a customisable ‘virtual’ wall or plane that cannot be seen by the naked eye with a 95-degree detection area of 20x20m or 30m radius detection range.

Installation helps improve Amazon delivery services Interphone has teamed up with Amazon Key for Business to enable easier, more efficient Amazon deliveries to multi-dwelling units (MDUs) in the UK. As an Amazon service provider, Interphone will install and maintain the Key for Business device free of charge to qualifying building owners and managers within the commercial residential marketplace. Key for Business gives Amazon drivers the ability to enter buildings and deliver packages without assistance, eliminating driver access issues and reducing the need for redeliveries. Residents can receive Amazon packages safely, whether they are home or away, and building staff can spend less time managing deliveries. “Key for Business will be available free of charge to building owners and managers for any multi dwelling unit (MDU) with eight flats or more,” explains Julian Synett, CEO of Interphone. “The cloud-based solution offers both financial savings and operational improvements by eliminating the need for onsite staff to handle incoming Amazon deliveries, while providing enhanced convenience for residents.” Interphone will supply, install, and maintain the Key for Business device, which integrates with a building’s existing access control system with Amazon’s delivery app. Once fitted, Amazon drivers receive authorised, time-limited building entry, so they can deliver packages to an

The laser technology works by analysing the speed, size and distance of the objects detected, meaning they track the objects within the detection area and understand the ratio size/distance of the object. This provides the ability to accurately detect a specific size of object either at distance or close up. In the event of any movement being detected, a security alarm is raised, and alerts are immediately sent to the 24-hour on-site security control room. The Transport for West Midlands capital construction programme comprises several major Commonwealth Games critical projects within the Perry Barr area, including the A34 highways scheme, Perry Barr Rail Station & Bus Interchange, Alexander Stadium, A34 Sprint and A34 public realm works.

New fire detection panels at Broxbourne School

Comelit’s Atena fire detection panels have been installed at an eight-form entry secondary school and sixth form academy, designed as part of a £100m development in Broxbourne, Herts. The redistribution of traffic flows is expected to cause significant potential disruption to the regional transport network, which therefore requires intensive CCTV monitoring and rapid incident response. Revader’s redeployable CCTV cameras combine camera, recording, storage and wireless video transmission in a single unit. They can be installed within minutes and repositioned to subsequent locations to suit changing surveillance requirements. The units can operate from a variety of power sources, including mains and battery. Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is able to relocate cameras from site to site according to construction schedules, traffic volumes and the variable levels of disruption caused to surrounding infrastructure. The camera units are primarily attached to street lighting columns adjacent to major traffic routes. Data and video feeds are fed back to TfWM’s Regional Transport Coordination Centre in Birmingham, where these can also be shared with regional Urban Traffic Control centres and third parties such as the Police. It was therefore important from the outset that the new cameras interface with existing network infrastructure and control room systems. Revader Security worked in partnership with CDC Technical Services (TfWM’s appointed consultant for the project) and Total Integrated Solutions (the authority’s incumbent maintenance provider) to ensure that the cameras integrated seamlessly with existing CCTV systems. our new buildings which enhance not only the learning experience of our students but also provide a fantastic resource for local groups and the wider community in and around Broxbourne. Of course, within this, a significant part of the delivery was ensuring the buildings were fire safe, and compliant to latest standards, as a duty of care to all.” Matrix Fire & Security, working alongside Greenside Integrated Services and main contractor, Mid Group, relied on Comelit’s fire safety portfolio. Matrix installed the Atena two-panel network system, which operates on up to four loops per panel to service up to 250 devices per loop. Together with the combined detectors and sounders, Atena’s capability matched the size and scope requirements of the new campus. With its networked two-staged alarm procedure, combined with Class Change and a Lock Down facility, the Atena system encompasses panic alarms and Fire Brigade notifications programming. It can manage potential nuisance alarms effectively, to minimise disruption to learning, whilst also safely evacuating students and staff in the event of a genuine fire.
