Fuelling panic At the time of writing this column the country is in the grips of a fuel buying panic, which in all likelihood will lead to a shortage that would probably not have happened without the media reporting on it in the first place

hese days people believe what they want to whether it makes any sense or not. During the week it took to finalise and lay out the pages of this edition some bright spark decided to put the opinion out to the world that BP “may” experience some shortages in fuel stocks due to a lack of tanker drivers. Nobody at that point chose to even question the validity of the claim (which apparently came from a behind closed doors meeting) – no, the mainstream media outlets, who love a crisis, just ran with it. The good old British public enjoys a bit of a panic, it was only recently that loo rolls were hotter property than gold, so logic was completely ignored and drivers immediately headed to the garage to fill any containers they could so that they has enough fuel to last until Christmas. Those who were genuinely running on fumes had to sit in queues watching others topping up cars that were only destined to sit on driveways. We shouldn’t really be surprised in these days of social media platforms on which anyone can publish anything to the world, whether it’s true or not. People choose what to believe to the extent that they’ll take the news that “there may be fuel shortages” as gospel, but not believe it when they are told that “there is no need to panic buy”. Plus, we also love to exaggerate; my mum would hear that there was to be snow in the Highlands of Scotland and then tell everyone that there will be blizzards in Birkenhead. The security industry is also going through a situation at the moment with some insiders telling me that there we are facing potential component shortages that could affect technology manufacturing and also a lack of shipping containers leading to a reduction in import levels. We have heard that the supply chain to UK companies has been hit in regard to chips and lenses, which has lead to stories that some distributors are being “encouraged” by manufacturers to hold more stock in anticipation of a shortfall. Much of the reasoning for the expected supply problems is down to a combination of the impact of Covid and EU paperwork, both factors which will hopefully be reduced as we appear to be moving further away from restrictions. The fuel and loo roll panic buying shows that by just telling someone that there could be a shortage of something, you can actually create such a shortage, fortunately the security marketeers appears confident that we will see more of a supply stutter than it grinding to a halt, so we must remain positive to avoid being architects of our own demise. In 2021 Interphone is celebrating 60 years since being founded by Solly Steinbock and Robert Cramer, two refugees that arrived in the UK as teenagers during the 1930s and became close friends. Both had a background within the telecoms sector – Robert’s family had run a company renting office telephone equipment to large corporations in the 1920s, while Solly had set-up his own telephone manufacturing business in the 1950s. They used their combined experience to create a door entry business that installed audio systems into apartment buildings, offering one of the first rental solutions in the commercial residential sector. Since the mid-1980s, Interphone has been expanding its proposition to cover door entry,

to store keys on-site and at the point of need. This hardware is combined with The Keyholding Company’s technology used by its nationwide network of response officers. When an alarm is triggered through the partnership’s integration, the best placed response officer automatically receives alarm response job information and a unique one-time access code for the SentriKey key safe at the property, via the mobile app. This enables the responder to travel directly to the alarm activation without collecting keys from a key vault. This solution also removes the need for external keyholders, as physical keys are kept on-site within the SentriKey lock box. The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Chris Coughlin, Head of Monitoring at ARM Secure, recently rebranded from VRC Monitoring Solutions. Part of the Asset Protection Group, ARM Secure are an NSI Gold Cat II Video Monitoring Centre, based in Bristol.

London crime data serves to offer tool theft warning for tradespeople Metropolitan Police data has revealed that only 1% of stolen powered hand tools are ever recovered, costing tradesmen in London more than £38 million in the last two years, and £17.5 million in 2020 alone. New data shows there were 28,338 tool thefts reported across London from 2019 up to May 2021 this year. Barnet, Enfield, Ealing, Waltham Forest and Haringey are the five boroughs where figures were highest, with thefts in Barnet (1,917) accounting for nearly 15% of the total. By contrast, Merton (475), Richmond upon Thames (439), Hammersmith and Fulham (371), Kensington and Chelsea (371) and Kingston upon Thames (327) suffered the fewest reports. The findings, collated by Herts Tools, come from a freedom of information request to the Metropolitan Police. The data reveals the impact of tool theft on livelihoods, the cost of the crime and the most affected areas in London. Thieves are ten times more likely to steal powered hand tools than non-powered hand tools, with 32,067 taken from 2019 to 2021, compared to 2,993 non-powered hand tools. 1,942 garden tools were stolen in the same period. Year on year, the cost of tool theft is falling: it dropped from £20.7 million in 2019 to £17.5 million in 2020, a decrease of 15%. However, the average cost of tool theft per month, so far in 2021, is still £1.46 million. Stefano Lobban, Director at Herts Tools, said: “It’s been a tough couple of years for tradesmen with Covid-19 really restricting their ability to work. The last thing they need is their tools being stolen, but this new data shows us just how common that reality is, particularly in London. Unfortunately, thieves are often attracted to high-price items like powered hand tools. Of course, when these items are stolen, it’s even harder for tradesmen to replace them due to the high cost. We just hope people take these new figures as a warning and make sure they’re vigilant.”

Can you tell us a bit more about your new role? I recently joined ARM Secure as Head of Monitoring, with a view to oversee the operations and monitoring of our business. I have an extensive background of setting up and running monitoring stations, and in my previous roles I have worked with some massive retail companies, such as Morrisons. ARM Secure is about to enter a real exciting phase of transformation and I’m thrilled to be joining at such a pivotal time. What are the latest challenges and opportunities in terms of monitoring? The nationwide switch-off of PSTN as part of the UK’s All IP project poses a major challenge to our sector. ARCs and Installers must work together, along with solutions providers, to ensure we upgrade and future-proof all connections that currently rely on PSTN. We cannot leave things to chance as that may result in a system failing to signal an alarm to the ARC during an emergency. Alongside this, from a connectivity point of view, we have the growing challenges around encryption, GDPR and general cybersecurity. With all the connected devices in our industry, from alarm signalling to CCTV and beyond, we must ensure we are locking down these systems so that only the responsible parties can interact with the systems. How is technology improving the services we offer? As an NSI Gold ARC, it is important to ensure we are always working with the latest technology to provide the best service possible for our Installers and their customers. Increased visibility is one way we can do this, thanks to solutions that offer Remote configuration (UDL) and/or Remote Access to systems. This means we can check faults more easily but also complete online maintenance to keep the system working on the latest software updates. Further improvements have been seen in terms of CCTV imagery, which now provides better picture quality and larger data options are now offered as standard thanks to the wider availability of 4G and superfast broadband. This means the information we receive, and react to, is more accurate than ever. How can we combine these services to improve our offerings? Options to combine offerings provide a more holistic and ‘halo’ style solution for Installers. For example, by adding video verification to an alarm system we can get more information at the ARC, should we receive notification of a confirmed alarm. We can then investigate further and action accordingly. The addition of new options like ECHO (Electronic Call Handling Operation) and the priority of professionally monitored alarms at the Police will also enhance what the professional security market has to offer. These complementary services are adding value for end-users and Installers can benefit from this.

Entry systems can alert remote tenants via phones

The Quick Start Guide gives very limited information, but detailed manuals can be downloaded from the Ajax website. Links and QR codes are provided for accessing this information and following installation are readily available through the app, for each device on the system. The rear mounting plate slides off the unit and has four main mounting hole knockouts with an additional four in the bevelled sides in case of corner mounting. The tamper switch actuator is formed on a perforated section for one main and side mounting hole to ensure that the tamper is activated if the unit is prised from its wall mount. The unit is self-contained with batteries pre-fitted and ready to go. With the latest version of the Ajax app available on either an Android or iOS phone or tablet the unit is added to the relevant Hub’s device list using the “Add Device” option. When prompted you then enter a name for the unit and its unique reference number and allocate a room location. The unique reference can be entered by scanning the QR code on the rear of the unit if your mobile device supports this feature. Once the details are entered, turning the unit on starts the enrolling process that completes in a few seconds. The proprietary “Jeweller” encrypted protocol is used for alarm communication with the additional “Wings” protocol (based on Jeweller) with its own dedicated antenna being used for the image transfer to the hub. The recommended mounting height is given as between 0.8 and 1.3 metres. This is essential to

ensure pet immunity and good human target capture.

Status and settings The app lists the device real time status for Temperature, Jeweller signal strength, Battery charge, Lid (tamper) open / closed state, Delay when entering / leaving state, Connection, Wings signal strength, Photo Transmitting Channel, Sensitivity, Anti-Masking, Always Active And Temporary Deactivation state. The device’s name, Firmware version and Device ID is then shown at the bottom. The Cog or Gear icon shows the configuration screen, and this includes options to change the allocated Name of the device, the room it is assigned to, and set the sensitivity from its Normal default to Low or High. These are followed by On / Off switches for Antimasking, Always Active and Alarm LED indication. Next the image resolution can be changed from its 320 x 176 default to 640 x 352, the number of photos to send from None, or 1 to 5. Alarms with photo verification from 1 to 10 or always. Then Delay when Entering and Delay when Leaving settings from 0 to 120 seconds each in 15 steps, with 5 second steps to 40 seconds then 10 second steps to the maximum. “Arm in night mode” is next and is off by default. “Alert with a Siren” commands cover “If motion detected”, on by default, and “If masking detected” off by default. Final options are provided for Signal Strength testing of the Jeweller and Wings encrypted wireless signals, a Detection zone test, a signal attenuation test (to check suitability of location), temporary deactivation and access to the User Guide. Hardware A clip-on hood on the top of the assembly helps protect the camera from snow and rain. The operating temperature range is from -25°C to +60°C. The MotionCam Outdoor only works with the later produced Ajax Hub2 and Hub2 Plus units and currently is not supported by the range extender, however with a stated range of 1700 metres in free space, should suit most applications. The rear panel has a detection distance slider control with 5 discrete settings from Near to Far. These represent from up to 4, 5, 7, 12 and 15 metres detection distance respectively and operate by physically moving the lower PIR module angle of detection. To reduce false alarms, the outputs of the two PIR sensors is compared using software for correlation and then frequency components. Animals up to 80 cm therefore do not trigger an alarm. Access to the 4 x CR123A 3v Lithium batteries is by removing 4 cross head screws within the rear panel and separating the front and rear sections. These batteries are easily changed and in normal use are expected to last up to 3 years depending on alarm activations and polling rate.

It is important to mount the device at the right height to ensure accurate performance. Detection of Human targets is based on both PIR devices detecting movement and comparing results to match those of a human subject. Animals will only activate one of the two sensors, and so will not create an alarm condition. The camera viewing angle is given as 105° horizontal x 50° vertical so ensures a sufficiently wide coverage to capture the full scene of the PIR’s 90° capture angle. The detector has settings for the image resolution and number of pictures

A very simple to install and manage, extended battery life external PIR detector for Ajax based Hub 2 systems, with the advantage of visual verification sent on alarm. It supports either 320 x 176 pixels images (its default) or 640 x 352. At the lower resolution it can supply from 1 to 5 images of the alarm event and at the higher resolution up to 3 images. After dark the unit has two high-intensity infrared LEDs to provide illumination for the camera’s monochrome mode. These illuminate only on alarm, and it was found that the first image may be captured before the LEDs trigger, however, this had the advantage of showing an initial image from background illumination with subsequent images IR supported. The LEDs provided reasonably even lighting that easily extended to the limits of the PIR sensor maximum range. These LEDs are visible as a red glow for the short time they are enabled. Although relatively low resolution, the images are sufficient to discern the subjects of the alarm event and allow appropriate action to be taken. The number of alarms supplying images can be restricted up to the first ten to prevent unnecessary repeat images being sent through, particularly where external bandwidth may be limited, this count resets when the system is disarmed. The alarm delivery time is stated as 0.15 seconds with the first image taking up to 9 seconds at default resolution or up to 20 seconds for 640 x 352. It is important to ensure that the receiving mobile device is appropriately set up to prioritise such notifications. Alarm images can be saved individually as .jpg or combined as an .mp4 sequence. Anti-masking alerts are indicated separately for the sensors and the camera.

Conclusion A very simple to install and manage, extended battery life external PIR detector for Ajax based Hub 2 systems, with the advantage of visual verification.

he Clarius Hybrid IP is a high-performance combined infra-red and white light illuminator. Incorporating the latest surface mount LEDs with enhanced optical output and outstanding reliability, delivers excellent nighttime images. The Clarius Hybrid IP is an internet protocol connected illuminator with integrated web browser interface. The range includes an interchangeable lens diffuser system; which allows the user to quickly and easily alter the angle of illumination. Elliptical beam profiles allow more light to be delivered where it is needed, illuminating longer distances and minimising light wastage. The system also helps to prevent overexposure of foreground objects. As standard the illuminator includes interchangeable lensing to deliver 10° circular, 30°, 60° and 95° elliptical beam profiles.

Getting started

The overall build quality of the Calrius Hybrid IP device is great. Is it of solid construct and IP66 rated making it suitable for most indoor and outdoor applications

The inclusion of paperwork within the box is was minimal with only information tags being supplied. The intention, like others, has been to move all previously printed documentation that is supplied with their equipment online. The box provides a direct link to download their “GJD Warranty Manager” application that allows you to register your device with them as well as obtain detailed installation and set-up materials in the form of PDFs. The default IP address for the device is 192.168.0.10, which allows you to access the device through a web client. The client software is nothing fancy, but it is reasonably straight forward to navigate. When you log on you are

GJD - Clarius Hybrid IP HL-8CW-IP prompted to set up a new username and password – following this you have six main tabs that allows you to set up the device; Events, LED Settings, Unit Configuration, Import and Export, Firmware Update and Logout, with the main setting allowing: Events – Users to enable/disable functions such as the Photocell as well as other event types LED Setting - Users to set the Visible LED power, IR LED Power, Strobe and Temperature settings of the device as well as allowing you to toggle them to test. There is also a handy “Sensor Status section that gives you active readouts of the status of the LEDs. Unit Config - Users to set DHCP, IP settings, DNS and port settings.

Performance The overall performance of the device works well. As this is a hybrid device you get the best of both worlds – visible and IR supplementary lighting. The visible light projection form GJD’s Clarius Illuminator can be set as static or in an array of strobe effects which can act as a great deterrent when linked to another external device or camera. The device web client page was also able to be viewed from Edge, Chrome, internet Explorer and Firefox browsers without experiencing any issues.

Conclusion The overall build quality of the Calrius Hybrid IP device is great. Is it of solid construct and IP66 rated making it suitable for most indoor and outdoor applications. With its one cable, POE application, this device would be a quick and easy addition to any site requiring multi-level supplementary lighting with the addition of external visual deterrents.

Partizan – IPD-5SP-IR Partizan provides a good “How to” section on their website under the camera that provide diagrams and videos that will help with installation and setup. Using the Partizan software which can be downloaded from their website, it is straight forward to find and configure the basic functionality of the camera and obtain an image. Similarly, if this camera is used on an NVR, as it is an ONVIF camera it can be easily used across multiple manufactures. This being said, the Partizan software when downloaded does not automatically configure to the screen resolution of the laptop. During testing it was found that some of the applications for example the configuration tool became too large to operate and unable to reduce the size of the application window without connecting to an external monitor.

his is a full colour 24/7 dome camera with the 1/2.7″CMOS sensor, featuring hybrid IR+White LED and resolution of 5.0 megapixels. A black and white image is viewed if nothing going on and then the camera switches on white LEDs for a colour image with a wide viewing angle. The infrared and white LED light of the camera can hit a distance of up to 30 metres at night. The camera has two types of power supply: via 12V by the regular power supply unit or via POE by data cable. This model maintains its functionality at a temperature from -40 to +60°C it has protection against humidity and dust, so can be mounted both inside and outside.

Getting started Within the box you are supplied with a pamphlet that provides technical information on the camera but nothing is provided in terms of mounting or installation instructions. On the box and within the box you are given access to a QR code that takes you to Partizan’s software centre where you are able to download Partizan’s desktop and mobile software.

Pros: • Cost effective • Works in low light • The dual LEDS, IR & white light provide additional functionality • Very good image quality • Cloud based storage solution and a 7-day free trial

Cons: • Set up passed basic functions is not straight forward • Build quality suitable for external use but is not vandal resistant

The overall performance of the camera was good. In daylight, the image provided from the camera was very clear and with Partizan’s Starlight technology it meant that colour pictures could be maintained down at low lux levels. It also meant that a clear coloured picture could be maintained at a low lux level with only slight image graining. The Partizan starlight camera incorporates two LED functions, IR functionality and white light LEDs. Once successfully set up the camera has the ability to use the IR function in low light conditions and with the smart detection function when it detects movement across its field of view it can trigger the white light function as additional supplementary lighting or deterrent.

Conclusion The Starlight dome is lightweight and suitable for external installation, though it is made of metal, it is an aluminium casing that is thin in areas. Considerations should be made on locating this camera as it may not withstand a heavy impact. With its low light functionality and dual LEDs this camera would be suited to any external application providing clear quality images and a visual deterrent outside the premises.

Bosch – Flexidome NDE-3503-AL Part of the Bosch Flexidome IP 3000i IR range, this fixed dome camera is impact resistant to IK10 with IP66 protection rating and has a 1/2.9” 5MP CMOS sensor, 3.2 to 10mm motorised lens and a range of “Essential” video analytic functions. It has a diameter of 137mm and height of 122.5mm. It has an operating temperature of -30°C to +50°C. Review: A very capable dome camera with a wide range of configuration options. Score: 8.5/10

IDIS – DC-S6283HRXL The DC-S6283HRXL dome is an external IP66, IK10 rated, 1/2” CMOS 2MP Lightmaster PTZ ONVIF compliant dome with 36 times zoom lens and long range IR capability. Review: A well featured PTZ dome with simple setup, excellent optical performance and enhanced IR illumination. Score: 8/10

Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DPZ Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°. Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this. Score: 8/10

Luxrite – SPR0DHIPD80 The SPRO DHIPD80 “Turret” style camera is an IP67 externally rated 8MP (4k) camera with a 2.8mm fixed lens, “ColourNight” operation and Active Deterrence capability. It has a built-in speaker and microphone along with external audio connection and alarm input and output. Review: A very sensitive “Turret” style camera with high definition and some excellent features for deterring intruders. Score: 9/10 24

It is designed for 24-hour colour imagery with warm-white visible LED illumination support for zero light scenes. A wide 2.8mm lens version is standard with 4mm and 6mm options. Review: An extremely sensitive 8MP high-resolution camera with advanced detection capabilities, 24-hour colour capability and a wide range of security features. Score: 9/10

Tyco – Illustra Multi Sensor Dome The Illustra Flex multi-sensor camera provides four 4MP camera views from a single location over a single network cable using just one IP address. The IP66 cameras can be flexibly positioned within the housing for full 360° coverage. Review: An interesting approach to the provision of multi-camera highly detailed wide-angle views from a single housing with straightforward installation and configuration. Score: 8/10

Hanwha Techwin – Wisenet XNV-8081RE The XNV-8081RE is from the Wisenet X range and incorporates a PoE extender capability to simplify cabling infrastructure when installing a second camera within 80 metres of an existing position. The dome is based on a 1/2.8” 5MP CMOS sensor with a stated 0.07 Lux colour sensitivity and IR LED monochrome illumination. Review: A very installer friendly ONVIF compliant external dome camera with ease of set-up and an ability to simplify network cabling when retrofitting for additional cameras, installing two cameras to a single location or when needing to install an adjacent PoE device such as lighting or PIR detection. Score: 9.5/10

Dahua – DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 The DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 is promoted as a 2MP Starlight IR Dual PTZ external network camera. It is from the Dahua WizMind range and is based on 2 x 1/2.8” CMOS sensors, one with a wide angle view and one with a 25x optical zoom lens. “Deep Learning algorithms” are used to support detection functions such as smart tracking of vehicles or humans with automatic filtering of false alarms. . Review: An interesting ONVIF compliant dome with high sensitivity and capable of tracking subjects while still maintaining an overview of the scene of interest. Good differentiation of targets to track humans and/or vehicles while preventing false alarms. Score: 8/10

Milesight – MS-C5375-EPC This IP67 and IK10 rated motorized 5MP mini dome boasts a number of features including AI analytics, Smart IR, which combines high beam and low beam to adjust IR intensity to suit different lighting conditions, plus functions such as HLC (highlight compensation) and defog. Review: The build quality is superb, the camera is well made. There are real signs of quality with this camera that include a solid casing throughout, connection points do not flex or move and all pivot points on the camera and lens move fluidly and are not flimsy. Score: 7.5/10

Hikvision – AX Pro The AX Pro can be purchased as a kit or individual components. The reviewed system was a DS-PWA96-Kit1-WE kit with the seven parts as listed. It is a wireless Grade 2 alarm system that can be used stand-alone or integrated into a management system. Additional modules are available to link to home automation products and systems. The DS-PWA96-M-WE panel supports up to 32 areas and 96 zones. Review: A compact wireless alarm system with extended battery duration and flexible remote management. The product is well suited to central monitoring with a range of protocols supported. A reasonably wide and increasing range of detector types with scope for integration with home-automation systems. Score: 8.5/10

Pyronix – MCEXTERNAL-WE This tamperproof and weatherproof contact extends perimeter protection applications to securing sheds, garages, gates etc, with remote voice push notification alerts via the smart device apps, HomeControl2.0 and ProControl+. Featuring an IP66 rating, this discreet and versatile Grade 2 device is described as easy to fit and calibrate. Review: The product is constructed very well. The casing is made of a hard polycarbonate with a deep grey (anthracite) finish which makes the door contact look great. The overall performance of the product did not disappoint during testing as it managed to maintain a high signal strength at all times as well as being very responsive. Score: 8.5/10

Ajax – Wireless Alarm System The Ajax alarm system is a wireless based EN50131 Grade 2 range of components that can be mixed and matched to suit a variety of home and office environments. Components are available in white or black finish to suit the décor of the site. Smartphone setup, management and monitoring along with extended battery life mean that the system is easy to install and use. Review: A wide range of detectors and simple set-up process makes for a potentially very quick installation. Good access to diagnostic information for monitoring purposes coupled with relatively straightforward battery changing. Score: 9.5/10

2N – IP Verso Intercom The door unit is IP54 rated, with IK08 impact rating (IK07 for display). It is produced in modules that can be extended to allow for numeric entry keypads, card readers and button arrays. It supports voice and video communication calls to mobile phones and tablets and can be integrated into security systems. The indoor viewer (right) is a 7” 1024 x 600 pixel touch screen device that can be desk or wall mounted. Review: A flexible system with great potential for mobile, remote, or central monitoring station use. It is potentially let down by its lack of worked examples for some of the commissioning settings, but manufacturer support should help overcome this. Score: 7.5/10

MaxxOne – M1P-IPC-080 A combination test unit for both analogue and IP CCTV systems. Its touch-screen control allows selection of a wide range of functions such as camera testing and set up, wireless network signal strength monitoring and multi-meter functions all in one compact unit. Review: The M1P-IPC-080 provides comprehensive test features and should limit the need to carry multiple test items to site. A very useful addition to the installation or commissioning engineer’s toolbox. Score: 9/10

Texecom – Capture Capture motion detectors are intended for use in a wide variety of professional security applications. With a choice of EN Grade 2 wired or wireless connectivity, wall or ceiling mounting, and a choice of detection technologies including dual element, quad element or dual technology sensing, Capture suits a wide variety of security environments. Review: The ease of connection with a range of switchable, built-in EOL resistor values simplifies the installation process. The potential for device branding will likely be appealing to independent installers. Score: 9/10

Zyxel – GS1350-6HP A “Smart Managed Switch for Surveillance”, the 6-port version has five PoE enabled ports and one SFP socket. All ports support up to 1Gb data rate with a 12Gb/s switching capacity and a 60-Watt PoE budget. 8, 16 and 24 port versions are available, each with 2 SFP sockets and PoE power of 130W, 250W and 375W respectively. Review: A very well featured security industry network switch with specialised surveillance features, that allows a high degree of network security and remote management when suitably configured. Score: 9.5/10

Camect – NVR The Camect NVR is a Smart Network Video Recorder using AI routines to identify specific subjects within the scene and to prevent false alarms. This model is primarily aimed at mid to high-end residential and small commercial properties Review: A very interesting, small intelligent recording device that does not rely on “Cloud” analysis or storage and with ease of installation and management. Score: 8/10

Satel – Agate The Satel Agate unit is an externally rated (IP54) “curtain” format intrusion detector designed for perimeter protection. It utilises two sensors, passive infrared and microwave, and meets the requirements of Grade 3 when wall mounted indoors. Review: A compact dual-tech curtain device that can be discreetly installed to provide perimeter intrusion detection. Score: 8.5/10

HKC – RF-Touch The RF-Touch wireless intruder keypad is among the latest additions to the SecureWave product line. The keypad is produced in either a black or white finish and it can be supplied with optional replacement facia trims in Black, White, Chrome and Grey. It is compliant with EN50131-3 Grade 2 Class II. Review: With an anticipated battery life of over three years in normal operation this is a very stylish compact grade 2 wireless alarm keypad to add to the HKC intrusion detection product range. Score: 8.5/10

Accreditation: NSI Gold What would be a typical project for you? We have mainly been focusing on large multi-level projects, both in the commercial and high-end residential sectors. Across the board, we are seeing an increase in smart technologies and, as a result, we are noticing growing demand for IP control devices. The use of smart technologies in buildings has become an integral part of everyday life, offering convenience and flexibility for users. From lifts to heating, from alarm systems to access control, the range of critical infrastructures connected to the network and communicating with each other and with smartphones and other IoT devices is increasing. To keep up with the current IoT trends, the integration of products will become more and more important to add functionality and security features. Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers? We have had a really good experience with Axis

cameras for CCTV systems, 2N IP intercoms for access control solutions and Orisec for intruder alarm systems. In terms of the latest technologies, we are particularly impressed with WaveKey the Bluetooth-based mobile access technology from 2N. It’s capable of unlocking a door in just 0.3 seconds, twice as fast as a RFID card, and it has huge benefits both for office managers and their employees. I’m sure that there will be a lot of demand for it as people head back into their offices after the summer. What is the best thing about working in this industry? The fact that technology is always evolving keeps the job interesting. I also enjoy the fact that every project throws up different challenges and requires slightly different approaches. We also have to use very different technologies – ranging from simple access and security products to the most complex integrated solutions. The variety is the fun part of the job.

We have been trading for 40 years this year and are NSI Gold accredited. It benefits us because it differentiates us from other installers within the industry that don’t carry these accreditations. That wouldn’t be a big advantage if it didn’t matter to our customers, however it does. They recognise it as a hallmark for competence and professionalism and it’s reassuring for them to know that their systems are guaranteed to be installed to the highest standards. That helps us build trust and integrity with our customers from the very start. Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting? Everyone is struggling with recruitment these days. There’s no doubt that there is a skills shortage in the engineering industry, and the best people are in real demand. We use internships to attract talented students and gradually develop those people internally. We think that’s the best way, but it also emphasises the need to retain great people once you’ve got them. Making sure you are a fun and interesting place to work is an important part of this. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Not really. We have been around a long time and can generally anticipate the kinds of requests that customers are likely to raise, which means that we can address them proactively. But it's mostly about open communication at the start of the process. Most of our customers are very reasonable people and as long as you are clear about the available options from the outset, they understand. Getting that right is one of the keys to delivering smooth installations from specification to system handover. What is the security/fire industry’s biggest myth? That CCTV/video systems stop people stealing things! You won’t find a bigger advocate than me for the effectiveness of the security systems we install, but no solution can prevent every incident. Most of our customers understand that, fortunately. What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? This is definitely an area of growing demand. It’s a 30

priority for a lot of customers because it provides a sense of ‘cool’ that is valuable to them. For us, it’s another interesting area to focus on and gives us different types of projects to work on – which keeps the job interesting! What would make your job easier? Interesting question...If I knew for sure I would be a very fortunate man, great teams do great things, it would certainly make my job more relaxing! I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a great team that are fantastic technically and brilliant with our customers. Talent retention is therefore a huge priority for us. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? That’s a tricky one. Technology in our industry is moving at an incredible rate. If you had asked this question 10 years ago, we wouldn’t have asked for the systems we have today. I guess ultimately simplicity for the end user. However, advanced the systems are in the backend, what the end user sees has to be easy to use, fast and intuitive. With simplicity for the end user, all our work becomes far easier. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? I’d tell myself that there’s always going to be demand for what we do! I think I would have found that reassuring when I was learning my trade. I would also tell my younger self that new technologies are going to be constantly emerging which will keep the job fresh and enjoyable. That’s definitely one of the reasons that this has been the right career choice for me and I wouldn’t change a thing! Will England ever win the World Cup again? I think we have a great shout in Qatar. We’ve just got to the final of the Euros with a really young, exciting team – and the World Cup is only 18 months away. A lot of our team have experience from getting to the semis of the last World Cup too. Also, don’t forget that European nations have won the last four World Cups – and we know that we’re one of the best European teams now! If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? We are based in Caterham, Surrey, which is a lovely part of the world, but we work right across London and the South East – where, in places, there is a lot of poverty and deprivation. I’d therefore like to think that if I won £25,000, I’d give it to local charities so that they can help other people. I hope that’s what I’d do anyway!

The system takes visitors on a virtual walkthrough around a large showroom to see Dahua’s latest product and technology innovations and gives them the opportunity to interact with various displays and download further information. Visitors can select an automatic tour of the entire showroom to get an overview on what is on offer, with the option of stopping at particular exhibits to drill down to the level of detail they require. Alternatively, visitors can navigate at their own pace, stopping off wherever they like. The centre supports installers in designing the latest security systems for their customers, giving them a single destination to gather all the knowledge and resources they’ll need. Schools and the future of CCTV Four out of every five (82%) of existing CCTV and video monitoring systems are set to be extended to help keep schools and colleges ‘COVID Safe’, found a new education sector study of 91 education organisations based in the UK, US, Sweden and Norway, carried out by Video Security as a Service (VSaaS) provider AVA Security any schools and colleges have already adapted their video monitoring systems to support COVID safety measures. For example, 50% of all those in charge of these systems had already adapted their existing video systems to help manage social distancing. A further 34% planned to use their systems for this purpose within the next 6 months. The AVA Security Education Sector Trends Report 202, provides data and insight linked to how operations, security and IT directors and managers within educational establishments in the US, Norway, Sweden and the UK, are adapting their video monitoring or CCTV systems in the wake of the pandemic. Nearly four of every 10 (38%) educational institutions were already using their video monitoring systems to trace all student, staff and visitor movements in, out and around their premises and grounds to protect everyone from infection. A further 46% planned to configure these systems for this same purpose within the next six months.

Nearly a third (29%) of institutions were already using the existing video systems to help provide

temperature level health checks at some building entrances. A further 43% planned to enable temperature checking via their CCTV systems within the six months. Interestingly, 41% had already deployed their video systems for reporting on class or lecture hall occupancy levels and people density levels inside retail areas, dining facilities and other leisure areas where students congregate. A further 41% said they were planning to add this capability via their video systems over the next six months. Mask detection analytics is also being deployed in US and Northern Europe’s schools and colleges: 35% had already deployed video analytics software now available for alerting security staff when teachers or students are inside a building but not wearing a mask. A further 31% planned to deploy mask detection analytics within the next six months. However, the education sector is a more cautious deployer of facial recognition analytics in existing cameras to enable visual identification and contactless access control in the interests of reducing COVID infection via card touch-in gates. date, although this is set to more than double to 29% over the next six months. The biggest challenge of supporting all these changes appears to be paying for them: 31% of those in charge of video monitoring systems had already seen a significant reduction in budgets available for upgrading and improving video monitoring capabilities in the last year. A further 29% had seen a small reduction in budgets over the same timeframe. A further 8% thought fresh budget cuts were likely before the end of 2021.

Cybersecurity

As IT, operations and security staff have had to run systems as well as teaching remotely during the pandemic, there has been an increased focus on cybersecurity to protect access to vital data and online learning resources. Just in the last few months, the University of Hertfordshire experienced a major cyberattack which led to the shutting down of key online learning apps including Zoom for students enrolled there. Over a third (35%) of educational institutions’ decision-makers questioned thought it ‘very likely’ that they would need to place a ‘larger focus on cybersecurity for all devices and applications that are networked’ as one impact of the pandemic. A further 48% thought an increased cybersecurity focus was ‘likely’. Linked to this, 27% of directors and managers running video security systems in schools and colleges saw improvement to the video ‘system’s resilience and back-up systems/procedures’ as a ‘High Priority’ improvement that they needed to implement to protect video data this year, while a further 44% saw it as ‘Somewhat a Priority’.

VSaaS

For the 82% of all education respondents actively considering Video Security as a Service (VSaaS) options right now, there were many criteria determining provider selection. Nearly nine out of 10 net (87%) considering VSaaS in 2021, agreed with the statement ‘It must have very strong cybersecurity, including end-toend encryption from the camera to the cloud.’ The VSaaS selected must also offer a reduction in the ‘Total Cost of Ownership of our video monitoring system’, according to 48% of

educational institutions considering migration to VSaaS. Further, 45% of decision-makers questioned insisted on greater ease of use, supporting the statement ‘It must be configurable and operable by non-IT people’. While 24% of education sector decisionmakers considering VSaaS, said it was critical that the provider was not headquartered in mainland China. A net 80% of video monitoring system decision-makers in the education sector also considered it important that the VSaaS selected ‘must allow us to continue using our existing third party cameras which we have already installed, we don’t want to rip and replace any equipment’. A net 80% considering VSaaS also confirmed ‘It must allow us to view their directly attached cloud cameras alongside our third party cameras on the same interface’. Further, the same number of respondents (net 80%) considered it net important (either ‘very’ or ‘quite important’) that the VSaaS ‘must allow us to use our existing Video Management Software (VMS) or provide the same functionality as we get from our VMS’. An even higher number, net 84%, regarded it as important that the VSaaS selected ‘must enable us to run the latest video analytics capabilities such as occupancy levels for social distance management (in a room), noise analytics (e.g., breaking glass, screaming, yelling etc), people and vehicle search, object searching and colour searching’. Vegard Aas, Head of Online Business at Ava Security, commented:“The fact that four out of five education sector video monitoring system decision makers are already actively considering VSaaS and weighing up criteria for selection is very encouraging. “There is also clearly a strong determination to adapt existing school video surveillance systems to new COVID-safe requirements. And the fact that a third (32%) confirmed that new budget had already been allocated for moving more services into the cloud this year provides significant scope for optimism.” The survey was conducted by market research firm Opinium and completed by 300 video monitoring/CCTV system decision makers employed by firms with more than 50 employees, of which nearly a third were in the education sector.

PoE – Powering video expansion Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe provides an overview on the benefits of PoE, as well as offering an explanation of the terminology associated with the cost and time saving technology ower over Ethernet (PoE) technology is now widely used across diverse security and surveillance applications. However, the latest version of the standard, first established in 2003, has evolved the technology’s capabilities to the point where security professionals are now able to find entirely new uses for PoEenabled cameras and devices. The PoE standard was first ratified by the IEEE in 2003, initially as 802.3af, and allowed a camera or other PoE device to receive up to 12.95 watts of power, with the second standard, 802.3at, doubling that to 25.5 watts. PoE technology enables integrators to easily connect, configure and integrate different types of systems, without having to learn a whole new ‘language’ and without needing to run separate cabling to individual cameras and other devices. This offers significant cost-savings because you now don’t need to provide power at every camera location and you don’t need to run 18/2 copper cabling. Instead, you will have a single cable for the data and power, with the added

bonus of making functions like UPS battery backup easier, because now it is all centralised. For system integrators, requiring fewer cable runs to deliver power and network connection to a camera makes it much easier to design and install new video surveillance solutions, as well as expand existing systems. There are also PoE extenders available which negate the need for a local 240-volt power source by lengthening the distance over which power can be delivered over PoE and there are ways to daisy chain these extenders to provide power over greater distances. PoE technology can also do much more, if used properly. The technology can extend beyond cameras to include lighting, digital signage, clocks, access control, entry and access badging systems, encoders, decoders and Public View Monitors (PVMs) and many other devices. Standards have evolved and now support higher network speeds of up to 10 gig and allow for more watts to be received. As the new standards have been released, manufacturers such as Hanwha Techwin, have kept pace by upgrading and enhancing its cameras to best take advantage of each technology leap. PoE+, for example, provides up to 25.5 watts over Cat5, whereas PoE can only offer up to 15.4 watts. The increase in wattage available via PoE+ means that sufficient power can be provided for heaters to operate within the housings of cameras designed to operate in low temperature environments. PoE+ can also be used to power a

camera’s built-in Adaptive IR LED illuminators in order to focus IR light on far away objects and in doing so, enable the cameras to capture high quality images in night-time conditions.

The terminology When it comes to PoE, there are two key terms which you are likely to come across: • Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) e.g. PoE switches. These can draw up to 15.4 watts, but it should be noted they can’t deliver this amount of wattage because of loss along the cable run. As such, a camera will only receive 12.95 watts. There are, by the way, NVRs on the market which have built-in PoE switches and as such, provide system integrators with a time saving method of supplying power to connected cameras. • Powered Device (PD) refers to cameras and other devices such as audio speakers, supplementary lighting units, I/O controllers or PIR sensors which draw power. It should be noted that a PoE extender camera, which offers a highly cost effective way to install a new two camera video surveillance solution or add a camera or another PoE enabled device to an existing system, might be referred

to as either a PD or a PSE device, as they both consume and provide power. When designing a system, professionals need to make sure they look at each device’s datasheet. If it says “12.95 watts,” that number shouldn’t be used by itself to size how big the power budget is on the infrastructure. If you have a 32-port switch, or even a 48-port switch, then 12.95 x 48 equals 621 watts. But 15.4 x 48 is 739. That’s a difference of 118 watts, which could cause devices to not receive enough power, changing your PSE selection. It’s important to always know what the actual power draw is on the switch side. It is also worth mentioning that the ‘E’ in PoE does not mean ‘everything’. There is no ‘one size fits all’ and just because a switch says it can do PoE+, it probably can’t do that on all the ports. You will need to take into account how much power each camera or each device consumes and then do the maths to make sure that a switch can fully support your network requirements. If in doubt, never hesitate to ask the manufacturer to confirm that their PoE cameras, NVRs and/or PoE switches are able to meet your requirements.

Unmanned train depots secured by Video Analytics Southeastern Rail Network operates train services between London, Kent and parts of East Sussex. It is one of the busiest networks in the country, transporting 640,000 passengers each weekday on its 392 trains, which are temporarily housed in 12 depots situated around South-East England. Some of these depots are unmanned, and therefore require intelligent security solutions. Combining audio and HD video Can you deliver broadcast-quality audio with HD-over-coax surveillance? Here we take a look at Dahua’s HDCVI DAC technology ithin a complete surveillance system, audio provides various monitoring scenarios with important evidence such as capturing conversations, which can be used to resolve disputes. Although the transmission of video and audio within standard analogue surveillance installations achieves a result of video with sound, the following user pain points still exist: 1. When not using a technology with the ability to transmit audio and video over the same coaxial cable, audio must be transmitted over an additional cable. This greatly increases system labour and maintenance costs. At the same time, the non-synchronous nature of the video and audio signals will cause discrepancies in the captured surveillance monitoring information. 2. Even if cameras are powered by a centralised power supply, each point still requires extra design and cabling work. At the same time, if poor quality materials are used, or the distance of power transmission is too great, it could cause an increase in voltage drops, resulting in the centralised power supply not being able satisfy device requirements for normal operation. HDCVI technology realises audio transmission over coaxial cable with DAC (Digital Audio-over-Coax) technology transmitting a digital audio signal directly over coaxial cable. As a result, not only is installation much more convenient, but there is also anincrease in audio transmission quality, achieving lossless “broadcast-level” audio quality, thus providing users with a multidimensional video surveillance solution.

Key technology HDCVI DAC technology converts a captured audio signal into a digital signal and combines it with the analogue video signal. Then, the signal is transmitted to the XVR via coaxial cable, where it is received and processed. High-Definition Sampling and Digital Signal Transmission - Previous audio transmission over coaxial cable was performed with the use of an

analogue signal. Within these configurations, it is easy for the signal to be affected by interference during the transmission process, making it difficult for the receiving end to precisely restore the sent audio signal. HDCVI DAC technology uses digital signal transmission technology to resolve this problem. It converts the analogue audio signal collected from a sound pick-up or a built-mic into a digital audio signal via an AD module (Analogue-Digital conversion module), whereby it then engages in processing and transmission. This results in the data on both the sending end and the receiving end being exactly the same, guaranteeing lossless transmission. At the same time, the AD sampling module uses 16 bit high precision sampling to divide the signal amplitude to 216. In comparison with previous 8 bit audio, this provides more precise sampling. Noise Reduction via Software Filtering Audio noise is often introduced during audio collection. No matter whether the user employs an external pickup or built-in mic, noise is unavoidable. With HDCVI DAC technology, after conversion from an analogue to digital audio signal, the signal is processed by an ISP, which uses an algorithm to achieve filtering, resulting in a maximum reduction of pickup input related noise. Note: Due to ISP performance limit, this technology is only adopted on some models. Baseband Multilevel Modulation/ Demodulation - HDCVI DAC technology uses baseband multilevel modulation. Baseband modulation allows for strong signal interference resistance and low signal degradation, allowing for longer range transmission. Multilevel modulation transforms the process from simple high-low levels into a number of levels, increasing the quantity of data transmission and reducing the audio data bit error rate. XVR, HDCVI DAC technology uses multilevel demodulation to completely extract and isolate the exact digital signal sent from the sending end, achieving lossless audio restoration. Audio Signal Judgment and Extraction HDCVI DAC technology adds audio flags to audio signals, preventing interference with the video signal. When the composite video signal passes through a coaxial cable and reaches the XVR device, the XVR will check for audio flags within the signal. If audio flags are not found, the device will not accept the audio signal, which reduces noise in the absence of audio input and further increases audio quality.

The FESS ECS card explained David Scott, Managing Director of Skills for Security reveals what you need to know about the BSIA Broadcast FESS ECS Card Scheme

n 2019, organisations, associations and employers from across the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems industry came together to agree a new structure for competence, qualifications and assessment under the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS). This included BSIA taking a leading role in shaping the future skills requirements for the sector and aligning the structure to the FESS Apprenticeship standard which is now in full operation. From July 2021, when you need to renew your ECS card, this will need to be in line with this new structure and you may be refused access to sites without a valid ECS card for your role. Dave Wilkinson, Director of Technical Services at the BSIA and Skills for Security’s Managing DIrector David Scott updated the sector on the latest changes to the ECS Scheme in the October BSIA Broadcast. They discussed how it impacts your business, what it will cost to bring company personnel up to speed with a FESS ECS competence and qualification card and how best to undertake training and assessment for your certification through leading industry training organisations such as Skills for Security. These FESS ECS occupations will replace the existing Fire Detection & Alarm Systems and the Emergency & Security Systems cards and is already in force throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. ECS cards are split across the various FESS disciplines, so depending on your skillset and expertise, you can now apply directly for the most appropriate card: • Fire • Fire and Emergency Lighting • Security • Fire and Security The card structure has changed to better reflect the type of role in each discipline and relevant level of competence. The different card options are, FESS Apprentice, FESS Labourer, FESS Systems Operative, FESS Systems Technician and FESS Technical Manager. The FESS Apprentice ECS card is for new entrants into the sector that are enrolled on a recognised FESS apprentice scheme, which concludes with the competency-based FESS EndPoint assessment. This pathway is one of two that allows you to achieve the ECS Gold Card once the candidate has successfully achieved the Level 3 FESS Apprenticeship criteria. To achieve the FESS ECS

Apprentice card, the apprentice will need to complete the ECS H&S multiple-choice assessment and provide evidence of being enrolled on a registered apprenticeship. These cards are often applied for through the relevant training organisation, so speak to your training provider first. The FESS Labourer ECS card is for people in a supportive role to assist other FESS industry qualified staff with the installation of cables and other unskilled work under supervision. These people wouldn't have responsibility for the full installation of systems. The FESS Systems Operative ECS card is for those working in specialist roles throughout the sector, such as installer or maintainer but are not able to demonstrate competency at level 3 for the Gold ECS card. The Systems Operative card is recognisable through its white and blue stripe. Those that require this ECS Systems Operative Card will need to demonstrate their competence through the newly developed ECS FESS multiplechoice assessment or a recognised qualification. Each assessment consists of 30 questions across a range of topics relevant to the chosen FESS occupation to be completed in 30 minutes. Each question will require the correct answer to

A separate revision guide for each pathway is available on the ECS website for free download. The guides contain sample questions and candidates are strongly encouraged to study these and undertake relevant training with their employer or a recognised training provider before undertaking the assessment. The FESS Systems Technician ECS gold card recognises the completion of the level 3 FESS apprenticeship standard mentioned previously, including the FESS endpoint assessment or the FESS Experienced Worker Assessment which launched in August 2021 for the Fire Pathway. The new FESS Experienced Worker Assessment has been developed by the FESS Employer group and NET (National Electrotechnical Training) and is for

those working in the industry who desire a Gold card but do not hold any formal qualifications. The Experienced Worker programme will be delivered over a maximum period of one year and will include a number of portfolio entries, practical assessments and a Level 3 knowledge assessment. Typically, the Systems Technician will work unsupervised in all areas of installation, maintenance and commissioning of their relevant FESS sector discipline. FESS Technical Manager is for those that have met both the FESS Systems Technician ECS gold card and the ECS manager requirements can be recognised with the FESS Technical Manager ECS black card. This card gives the cardholder the benefits of both being recognised as having met the FESS industry benchmark level 3 technical standard and also an industry manager.

Fire detection equipment for mixed-use shopping mall Fire detection solutions from Global Fire Equipment (GFE) have been installed in the KUMSmall Factory Shopping Mall, the mixed-use shopping mall in Europe. Located in the city of Kayseri in Central Anatolia, Turkey, KUMSmall comprises a shopping mall, business centre, hotel and entertainment centre. The mall covers an area of more than 302,000 m² and boasts 400 stores, 6,000 car parking spaces and a range of restaurants and cafes. Construction work on the mall was completed in 2019 under the leadership and control of construction company TOKI, while work on the hotel was still underway. The design, installation and commissioning of the fire detection system for the mall was undertaken by GFE’s appointed distributor in Turkey, GFE Bina Kontrol Sistemleri, in partnership with Biges Safe Life Technology, GFE Bina's main distributor in the security sector. Dogu Project Security Systems was appointed by Biges to install the chosen fire detection system for the mall. All system commissioning and tests were

carried out in cooperation with GFE Bina, Biges and Dogu. The chosen fire detection system for KUMSmall comprises nine Juno-Net series addressable control panels, 2,300 ZEOS AS-SI addressable smoke detectors, 29 AS-SHI combined heat and smoke addressable detectors, as well as other addressable devices. The addressable detectors are designed to isolate short circuits on the addressable detection loop of a GFE panel. The system is supported by GFE’s Odyssey Graphics Display and Alarm Management System which allows up to 64 JUNO NET fire alarm panels to be connected to a PC. Each panel can be displayed on the screen as though the operator was standing in front of it and each panel can be controlled from the computer. The system can also manage a number of fire scenarios, including escalators, elevators, automatic doors, ventilation system, smoke evacuation and parking jet fans. All of these scenarios were tested before commissioning. In the event of a fire, the emergency announcement system activates.

Cloud-based access control managed by a single app Property developers and residents at apartment development Live Oasis Deansgate, are benefitting from an a building automation system operable from one app, designed by GET Dynamic, in partnership with Comelit and Assa Abloy Global Solutions. The new smart mobile-first solution, being debuted at Live Oasis in Manchester, enables property owners, YPP Lettings and Management Company, to more efficiently manage the 60apartment site via cloud-based technology. Apartment owners can also control all aspects of their home including video entry calls, door opening and apartment automation, using the resident building app. Live Oasis is designed for students and young professionals. With fully furnished studio, oneand two-bed apartments, it also features a concierge service together with on-site security, all available for residents through the working week and supported by 24-hour CCTV. YPP Managing Director Omar Al-Nujaifi says: “Manchester is a vibrant, creative and innovative city, and our latest development offers apartments for a modern generation of residents who are not only looking for a stylish abode but somewhere that is technology rich, sustainable and a connected place to live.

“For this to occur, we worked with each company right from pre-project launch to achieve the desired, integrated result. GET Dynamic specified Comelit to provide fully-functional video door entry, without compromising on style or security, together with advanced access control and digital key functionality by Assa Abloy Global Solutions, all now operable from the main building app, ResiCentral. The virtual door entry and access control was integrated into the ResiCentral platform with Assa Abloy Global Solutions technology for the building’s access control solutions from perimeter protection to individual apartments. This also includes the ability for residents to gain convenient access to their accommodations by using personal devices as a secure digital key. Comelit was responsible for the IP door entry system operating from its VIP technology. The system specified comprised two module video VIP entrance panels, together with a multiuser gateway, to allow for visual and audio individual apartment access.

Speed gates control the flow at Tesco Mobile Head Office

Tesco Mobile Head Office in Slough was looking for a solution to manage access control because the front reception area of the building is shared access for all of the building occupants. Tesco needed to control the flow of staff and visitors entering and exiting their offices and allow staff and guests easy access beyond the reception area but prevent other people from accessing the area without authorisation. As an extra provision, a second level of security after the reception area was required to ensure only authorised personnel had access to the Tesco’s main office area. The solution was to install BFT Automation pedestrian speed gates to manage the flow of people with One Tech undertaking the installation project. For the main entrance BFT supplied PG300 pedestrian speed gates with a 900mm lane/600mm lane combination and for the two side entrances 900mm standalone lanes were supplied. The two-lane system was placed in the main reception area, whilst the two single-lane speed gates were located directly into the Tesco office at two different points, to provide an additional layer of security. This was a custom installation project which required the speed gates to be positioned in the centre of the reception area. The cables were fitted under the flooring and raised walkways to reach from the edge of the room to the speed

gates in the centre. A fitted glass linked the speed gates to the walls, cutting off other access points and making the speed gates the only entry and exit point. One Tech installed a standard width lane and a wider speed lane for improved access which also accommodates wheelchair users. The PG300 gates were fitted with double height glass panels made with a safe transparent tempered glass. The pedestrian speed gates were additionally fitted with a swipe card system for access control, so that members of staff could enter or exit freely.

Camera solution works wonders with fly-tipping incidents An infamous fly-tipping hotspot in Kent had Dartford Borough council moving up to three tonnes of fly-tipped material each week, but three months after the installation of new technology designed to tackle the problem of waste crime, has resulted in this number being reduced to less than one tonne a week. Bespoke cameras from new business venture, WasteWatch Cam, were deployed by Dartford Borough Council at the heavily fly-tipped community recycling centre off Birchwood golf course, earlier this year. CCTV cameras were in place before, and were capturing around 50 incidents a week at the spot, but they did not always pick up on the vehicle’s registration plate making it tricky to identify the offender and provide evidence when issuing fines. But six months after WasteWatch Cam has been installed, the number of incidents taking place at the hotspot dropped from around 50 a week, to just seven in the first month it was

installed – with all of them captured, Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) issued, and all of them paid. Three businesses - Business Insight 3, Kingdom Systems and Kingdom L A Support combined to create the system, which harnesses ANPR to not only detect the fly-tipping offences in real-time, but also see to it that the individual is held accountable. The camera uses video analytics to detect cars that arrive on-site, people getting out of cars and even the objects they are discarding of – be it as small as a fast-food bag, or as large as a washing machine. The amount of light there is also doesn’t affect its capabilities, being able to identify these movements equally well from day to night. This data is raised as an instant alert, with all the supporting details such as screenshots of number plates, faces and objects passed to the experienced in-house team at Local Authority Support who issue fines, warnings and – where that is not followed through – prosecution. “Local authorities like Dartford Borough Council do not have the time or resources to be trawling through hours and hours of CCTV footage in the hopes to capture fly-tippers, only to find that the resolution is so poor that they can’t make out a number plate”, explains John Roberts, Head of Local Authority Support at WasteWatch. “The only other alternative is for local authorities to manually search through the waste to find some form of address that could identify the culprit. Neither make sense – from a cost, time-management or effectiveness perspective.” “But, with WasteWatch Cam in place, flytippers are correctly identified, alerts are raised and FPNs are issued – sometimes before the offender has even driven away from the area. And this is completely end-to-end, wasting no council or authority resources and is accurate every time. It’s also free to councils as long as a certain number of tickets are raised.” Dartford Borough Council is now deploying WasteWatch Cam to a number of other locations around the county.

Carl Andrews

Carl Andrews has joined the Astra Security team as Operations Administrator. The new role will be focused heavily on customer service. Having spent the last ten years in Administrative duties as a Contractor Carl has worked for HMPS, HSBC, S.M. Andrews and Bromford. Carl said, “I’m really excited to be joining the team, and looking forward to getting to know the business better and use my vast experience to add value.” Sarah Steer, General Manager at Astra Security said, “It’s really great to have Carl join our team. Ashley Wyton

Veracity has recruited Ashley Wyton as Group Sales Director, who joins the company’s management team with a focus on strengthening relationships with security system integrators and installers and managing and expanding distribution network. Alastair McLeod, Veracity’s Chairman and CEO, says: “Ashley brings over 18 years of international security sector experience, where he has held a number of senior commercial roles with companies such as Flir, Honeywell and most recently Comelit Group. Comelit UK has expanded its team with the appointment of Simon Green as UK Sales Director. In a career spanning more than 25 years in the security industry and with 15 in senior leadership positions, Simon has embraced roles with global companies, including Prosegur, Bosch Security & Safety Systems and Genie CCTV. Now responsible for the development of Comelit’s sales team on a day to day basis, Simon will strategically coordinate plans to develop channels and relationships. Faz Colbhie

360 Vision Technology has announced expansion of its team with the appointment of Faz Colbhie to the role of Business Development Manager. Faz joins 360 Vision with over 13 years’ sales and business development experience in the security industry - latterly in business development at AMG Systems and as Head of Sales for Bosch Security UK. “I’m so excited to be joining the team at 360 Vison,” says Faz. “I originally met 360 Vision’s Sales Director, Sara Fisher (pictured with Faz), back in 2012 when she recruited me at AMG Systems. Over the next five years we worked on some interesting projects together and it’s where I developed some of my best relationships in the UK security industry. At 360 Vision, my main objective is to bring incremental revenue into the business by creating long term, strategic partnerships with customers to whom we can offer value and alignment with a range of products - all matched to their projects and end user base aspirations.”

Huw Williams

Tyman UK and Ireland has announced the appointment of its new Commercial Director, Huw Williams, who will play an integral role in leading the growth strategy of ERA and its sister company, Zoo Hardware. Huw has over 25 years’ experience within the automotive, electrical wholesale, ironmongery and building products sectors. He previously held the role of Commercial Director at electrical wholesaler, Denmans and has had a series of senior roles at high profile businesses, including Category Director for Saint Gobain Building Distribution (Jewson) and Commercial and Marketing Director for ATS Euromaster.
