he survey of 4,237 British adults found that less than a third (32%) have a burglar alarm in their home and, of these, less than half (49%) actually set it every time they go on holiday. Of those Britons that rarely or never set their burglar alarm, one in five admit to forgetting to switch it on, while for 13% of householders it’s because they fear getting false (unwanted) alarms. The same amount (13%) rarely or never set their alarm because they find it too complicated. “British householders could have faced more than a bad case of sunburn when they returned home from holiday this summer”, said Steve Riley, Commercial Director at RISCO Group UK. “There were an estimated 800,000 domestic burglaries in 2014/2015, resulting in an average loss per incident of £2,267 and damage costing £892. We are urging those that have an alarm always make sure it is working and switched on when they close the front door and head off on holiday.” Householders should also be aware that not switching their burglar alarm on can affect their home insurance, potentially leaving them without cover in the event of a burglary. With less than a third of homeowners having an alarm in their properties show that there is still a big target area for installers when it comes to future alarm business. But it seems incredible that when it is the minority of people that actually have one fitted that they should also fail to use it. Perhaps it is the case that some homes already had the system fitted and new owners just haven’t got around to working out how to use it, yet the fear that setting the alarm might cause ‘false’ alarms is not helping. Plus the fact that there is always the feeling that alarms just get ignored anyway. We discussed the future of bells-only alarms in an edition of PSI a while back and it is probably the case that those homeowners that fear false alarms or find using them too complicated do not have a professionally monitored service, or even a self-monitored service. When fitting or maintaining an alarm it is worth asking the question “what will happen when the alarm sounds?” to the customer as they may not have thought this far ahead, only to go on to decide against arming the system in the future. Quite how you can convert the remaining two-thirds of homes to take on an alarm is another point entirely. Statistics have indicated that burglars tend to avoid properties with alarms and other visible security technology installed, yet the majority do not have an alarm. Insurers lower premiums for those with an alarm, yet the majority do not partake. Smart technology could well help close up the market but it’s always a headscratcher as to why people don’t protect their property and valuables. Not having a professionally installed home alarm, and using it properly, is a gamble. Homeowners could easily enjoy stress-free vacations for the price of a good holiday. Andy Clutton EDITOR 5

Banham opens Academy

In brief Evolution celebrated its 20th year in business with a party for staff on board a New Orleans Paddle Steamer during the Henley Music Festival in the Summer. The company, which took on its first employee in October 1996, was one of the early adopters of digital CCTV technology and its first major project was upgrading the CCTV control room at Canary Wharf. Tom Brookes, Managing Director of Lindum Fire Services, has been appointed Vice Chairman of the Fire & Security Association (FSA). Tom will work with Pat Allen, FSA Chairman, and Steve Martin, Head of the FSA, to help shape the Association’s policy, strategy and offering to members.

Security provider the Banham Group has opened the Banham Academy, a new training and apprenticeship institute at its headquarters in South West London. Charles Hallatt, Executive Chairman at the Banham Group said: “We have run several apprenticeship programmes since the company’s inception, however the Banham Academy allows us to expand this to a much larger scale providing training opportunities to a far greater number of young Londoners and for the wider Industry.’ Accredited by Edexcel, Banham Academy is offering free traineeships and skills to young people with the desire to embark on careers within the security industry. All students who complete the training programmes will be guaranteed a job interview within the industry. Candidates who are picked for apprenticeships upon completing the training programmes will be offered paid apprenticeships within Banham – they have already employed 16 apprentices.

Aspiring security engineers begin apprenticeships Allcooper is celebrating the arrival of its latest intake of apprentices, who have joined the company to begin careers as security systems engineers. Six apprentices have been recruited on the back of a newly-formed partnership between Allcooper and South Gloucestershire & Stroud College, who have worked together to implement the security systems apprenticeship. The two-year course leads to full NVQ qualifications and aims to bring more young people into the security industry. The apprentices will take part in Allcooper’s apprenticeship scheme and be pairing up with senior Allcooper engineers to gain practical skills and experience of working on different systems and sites. Their time will be combined with study at South Gloucestershire & Stroud College for one day per

Profile Q released by ONVIF ONVIF has released Profile Q, the specification that features quick discovery, set-up and configuration of conformant devices. Profile Q offers out-of-the-box functionality for systems integrators and end users with an easy set-up mechanism and basic device level configuration Profile Q also supports Transport Layer Security (TLS), a secure communication protocol that allows ONVIF devices to communicate with clients across a network in a way that protects against tampering and eavesdropping. “With the final release of Profile Q, integrators and end users can expect out of the box interoperability between ONVIF conformant cameras and video management systems quickly and easily,” said Steven Dillingham, Chairman of ONVIF’s Profile Q Working Group. “Our development of this Profile is in response to the market’s request for a more streamlined setup and deployment process using ONVIF.” week, starting in October 2016. All aged between 17 and 21, William McKay, William Ellis, Kyle Sterry, Louis Murphy, Sean Doel and Charlie Euwin will each be learning to install and maintain the very latest security technology including intruder alarms, CCTV and access control systems. An exciting development for Allcooper is that Charlie Euwin has become their first female employee to take on an engineering role. As a former apprentice with the family business himself, Allcooper Director, Roman Cooper hopes the apprentices can follow in his footsteps by building long-lasting careers within the industry. Roman explained: “Encouraging young people is key for the future of security, so I’m thrilled to see another group grasp the opportunity to learn and develop through our apprenticeship scheme. The fact Charlie has become our first female engineer is great news for the business and shows the growing appeal of a career in security, regardless of age or gender. I’m looking forward to seeing them all progress over the coming years.”

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L

Good statistics for IFSEC and FIREX 2016

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Pat Allen, lead employer on the Fire, Emergency & Security Systems Trailblazer Employer Group, Director at Abel Alarm Company Limited and Chairman of the Fire & Security Association.

The statistics for IFSEC International 2016, organised by UBM EMEA, revealed 27,052 attendees, figures in line with the 2015 attendance. According to the data, the event saw good numbers on days one and two. Battling nature and politics on the third day, with the UK’s EU Referendum and severe flooding in London, the South West and Essex severing transport links to the venue, IFSEC still delivered over 7,000 visitors to exhibitor stands on day three. Key audiences on the IFSEC show floor saw growth this year, with an increase of the installer and integrator professions by 7% and significant international visitor participation at 34%. IFSEC also grew this year through crossovers from the co-located events, FIREX, Facilities Show, Safety & Health Expo, Service Management Expo and Professional Clothing Show, with a higher interest in security this year leading to an increase of show-floor visits. Gerry Dunphy, Event Director for IFSEC & FIREX International, said: ‘’The new areas this year such as Home Automation successfully showcased a whole new range of technologies available to security professionals and the Drone Zone was an absolute floor filler proving that IFSEC can always provide exciting spectacles for the visiting audience. We have already planned the main themes for 2017, so the security world should look out for further developments in home automation, smart commercial buildings, Borders & Infrastructure for senior specifiers of strategic security management and Installer World – a definitive destination for engineers and installers.” FIREX International welcomed 16,290 attendees across the three days, which is a positive increase on last year’s show. ‘’This year FIREX saw a return to form with over 76 exhibiting companies present,” said Gerry Dunphy. “Exhibitors reported substantial levels of interest from international customers as well as a noticeable growth in major end users. Installers told us they’re continuing to see the alignment with IFSEC as a major advantage of attending both shows as the ever increasing synergies between fire and security are coming to the fore. FIREX and IFSEC will continue to embrace this overlap for years to come.’’

How does the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Trailblazer differ from the existing Apprenticeship? The Trailblazer was employer driven, designed specifically to make the Apprenticeship more responsive to business needs and the demands of future technologies. It will have a synoptic end-point assessment and be graded for the very first time. The Apprentice achieving the end-point assessment will be able to apply for the relevant Professional Accreditation through IET (the Institution of Engineering and Technology) for Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) status. The delivery of the Apprenticeship will be through a national network of training providers, colleges, private company academies and endpoint assessment centres. Why was the decision made to bring Fire, Emergency & Security Systems together? Essentially they were already together within the existing Apprenticeship, but what this new qualification has done is realign focus on a more specialised and bespoke training programme, providing 4 options: Fire, Security, Fire & Security and Fire & Emergency Lighting. Ultimately this will enable the Apprenticeship to be more flexible as well as agile enough to meet the growing demand for skilled technicians across our sector. Government Apprenticeship funding changes in April 2017, what does the new Apprenticeship levy mean for Employers? This levy will motivate Employers to invest in Apprenticeships. I believe that they recognise the benefits that increased support for training could bring, with some seeing it as a solution to the skills gap that is currently affecting firms across the country. Only companies with an annual payroll of more than £3 million will have to pay the levy. Additionally, the government has just announced that it will fund 90% of the costs for Apprentice training for companies that don’t pay the levy, as well as the full cost for those who have fewer than 50 employees and are taking on 16-18 year olds. Hopefully these financial benefits will encourage employers of all sizes to invest in Apprenticeships. How can Apprenticeships help change the Industry over the next five years? Put simply, we have a huge skills gap in our industry. Finding talented young people is already a challenge and this shortage is likely to increase over the coming years if nothing is done. We have to change in order to attract talent to our sector and investing in Apprenticeships is an essential part of this. The technologies, knowledge and skills requirements of this Apprenticeship are significantly higher and at a more complex level than its predecessor. Our belief is that this will attract some of the highest calibre young people to our industry. This will then provide robust future proofing, with more skilled engineers working with advanced technologies, moving forward in IT, IP and smart mobile applications. Over the next 5 years, the Trailblazer programme will provide the opportunity for us to meet the needs of the industry as it becomes more technically complex in order to meet the ever-evolving customer and security requirements.

Honeywell’s Galaxy Range oneywell’s Galaxy range offers a versatile and scalable solution that is suitable for a variety of environments, from large industrial and small commercial to residential homes. As a trusted solution, the Galaxy range has already proven itself within the tough environment of the security industry, but new improvements and upgrades are making it even better. The cornerstones of the Galaxy range are the Galaxy Dimension and Galaxy Flex systems. The Galaxy Flex integrated intruder alarm and door control system took the features of the Galaxy Dimension system even further, offering a costeffective security solution for small to mid-sized businesses and large residential sites. Galaxy Flex was honoured at the PSI Premier Awards 2016, winning the Security Industry Product of the Year with support from installers, end users, and consultants from across the industry. In 2015, Honeywell launched the GX Remote Control mobile web application, a solution that allows users to remotely access and control their Galaxy Flex and Galaxy Dimension systems. The app is ideal for small businesses or for the home, allowing a busy business or home owner to check in on their premises wherever they are in the world. With on-demand status updates and the ability to set and unset alarms remotely, GX Remote reduces the need for resource-hungry site visits and ensures users feel confident their site is safe and secure. Earlier this year, Honeywell introduced the Galaxy Flex+, an integrated intruder and access control solution designed for high-risk, small to medium sized businesses. An evolution of Galaxy Flex and Galaxy Dimension, Galaxy Flex+ enhances the strengths of the Galaxy range while also taking customer feedback into account. When designing Galaxy Flex+, the first priority was creating a robust solution capable

Security technology has come a long way in recent years. Historically, it has been difficult to offer the same functionality in a home or small business as in a large enterprise. But with the advent of integrated security systems, installers can now offer all their customers one complete solution that can be adapted for a variety of use cases.

10

of both Security Grade 2 and 3, and featuring multi-path communications. With GSM/GPRS and heartbeat monitoring, Galaxy Flex+ ensures a reliable connection with an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). The system is therefore ideal for small businesses to medium sized enterprises that handle high-value assets, such as banks, jewellers, pharmacies, and petrol stations. In addition to creating a robust solution, Galaxy Flex+ also enables continuous round-theclock monitoring that these high-risk locations require. It uses available communication infrastructures to enable monitoring from a single, central location, easing the burden on business managers and owners. Ease-of-use is also central to the design of Galaxy Flex+. The system’s modular design and automated programming profile ensures installers can install the system in any building with minimal disruption, saving valuable time for the installer and customer. Honeywell will shortly announce the release of the new TouchCenter Plus, a graphical touchscreen keypad for the Galaxy range. TouchCenter Plus simplifies daily operation of Galaxy security systems by providing users with a complete overview of their sites, clearly explained on just one screen. Users can also access live video footage from four IP cameras linked to the system on demand, for complete peace of mind. In the future, integrated security systems will continue to evolve to meet customer demand. As demand for this and for smart homes grows, customers in the residential and enterprise sectors will both look for a welldesigned system that can multi-task, be accessed remotely, and integrates with other aspects of their site technology. With the support of the industry, Honeywell’s Galaxy range is up to the challenge.

he Milesight website states that Milesight is a “new player in the market” and that they supply “high quality standard products” by “only specialising in the manufacture and R & D of HD Network cameras, VMS and NVRs”. The particular model reviewed here is a 3MP indoor / outdoor fixed PoE dome camera with a motorised 3mm to 10.5mm lens and capable of H.265 compression. The dome is ingress protection rated to IP66 and has an impact resistance of IK10. ONVIF profile S is supported.

Features The first impression is of a well-built dome of solid construction and that much thought has gone into the practicalities of installation. The main dome body attaches to a ceiling / wall fixing plate that is first fixed in place and then the dome clips onto this with a small anti-clockwise rotation. A grub screw in the dome base prevents unwanted removal. The clear dome cover is held in place with three captive Torx screws. With the dome cover removed a single captive thumbwheel screw releases the hinged interior of the dome to give access to the connections. There is sufficient tension on the hinge mechanism to prevent the camera module swinging while released from the base. This hinged construction leads to the “clamshell” description that is given to the design. A

Milesight MS-C3772-FPB/3-10.5 Dome Camera short removable lanyard links the bowl to the main body. On this model the only connections are an RJ45 socket for the PoE enabled network link and a two-pole pluggable screw-terminal connector for the optional 12v DC power. These connectors are on a small sub board that has a 2 pole connector for the microphone which is mounted in the camera casing and a 10 pole connector providing all connections into the globe-shaped dome electronics module. The lens has a spring-loaded felt surround to ensure a good light-seal with the outer bowl to prevent any IR light spill over. Three high intensity IR LEDs are sited below the lens with a light sensing unit to the lens left hand side. In the back of the globe section is a Micro SD card slot that can accommodate up to 64GB cards and a reset switch. A single hex screw clamps the globe in place and when loosened the globe section can be rotated and tilted in the correct position for the scene to be viewed before re-securing. As is often the case some of the specification information such as sensitivity needs careful consideration as it is quoted at 0.002 Lux colour and 0.001 Lux B/W; these are not representative of real-world acceptable image quality but a potential level of detection within a scene.

The software also allows batch updates for multiple cameras on the network along with configuration setup and firmware updating for single or multiple cameras. From there all camera settings can be managed with an internet browser. While a range of compatible browsers are listed there appeared to be no video support for Microsoft Edge on a Windows 10 PC but alternative browsers performed well. In all other cases it was just a simple matter of entering the username and password then following the prompted download of an ActiveX component the live and configuration screen video appeared. The supplied memory stick includes additional software for remote connections to phones and tablet devices.

Menu Options

9.0 out of 10 14

The main browser menu options are simply and clearly laid out. The Live Video screen is provided with lens controls and image adjustments for Brightness, Contrast, Colour and Sharpness. The varifocal lens control uses a slider with flyover text showing a range of zero to 100 for the full range from 3mm to 10.5mm. Once set to the desired view there is a slight delay while the autofocus pulls the image to optimum focus. It was found that at extremely low light levels with slow shutter speed enabled the lens could tend to hunt on some scenes. Manual Focus override buttons are included. All main settings can be implemented through the Basic options with the Advanced menu options for the introduction of Motion Detection, Regions of Interest, Day / Night modes, Alarm handling and scheduling. It was noted that while the primary stream had settings up to 3MP, the secondary was limited to a maximum of 705 x 576 and the third stream to 1280 x 720. Even with the primary stream set to a standard HD output of 1920 x 1080 there was no increase in the other stream maximums. In realworld use this should be perfectly acceptable for the majority of installations however there is a tendency for some system requirement documents to be written around particular specifications such as those requesting dual HD streams. Separate on and off light levels are available for IR lamp control, designated as Day to Night and Night to Day with an indication of the current level being shown. This gives a much better degree of control than a level switch. Audio and alarm features include SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) functionality for signalling and comms.

Operation The camera performed extremely well with very detailed image quality and colour rendition in exterior daytime and internal office lighting levels. During low-light testing the camera performed to the level expected of a device utilising the Sony Exmoor™ CMOS sensor. Overlooking urban park-land the IR illuminators worked in excess of the stated 30 metres range. With IR illumination turned off and still in monochrome mode the camera was able to provide noisy but useable images from town lighting scattered by an overcast sky when operating at the camera’s default 1/25th second shutter. With the shutter dropped to its lowest 1/5th second the image became much clearer though of course prone to image blur for any movement within the scene. The areas of observation were well beyond the capability of the human eye to discern any scene features. Image noise is well managed with the H.264 bandwidth reducing from an average 4Mb/s down to around 1Mb/s when in its higher sensitivity modes. The manufacturer only gives a simple sensitivity figure of 0.005 Lux @ F1.2 but this is quite meaningless as no reference is given to how this is measured, what reflective surfaces are in the scene or what integration or IRE equivalent level is being used however the performance matches expectations of the chipset used. A series of latency tests were undertaken using both the Mozilla Firefox browser and the Milesight VMS Lite front end. These tests resulted in a very good average figure of around 250ms for H.264 operation with a slightly higher figure around 350ms when using H.265, however it is likely that much of this increase is due to decoding software delays rather than the camera’s compression process. The WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) operated well when observing window scenes with high contrast between the interior and exterior view; the detail in both areas appeared natural. It is stated as Super WDR but no dynamic range figure has been provided in the available documentation.

Conclusion This camera is designed to be easy to install and has very good support documentation supplied and online. Its image quality is very good with excellent low light performance. With careful setup and reference to the manuals, some impressive features can be implemented.

his device from the Vista qulu range is intended to simplify the installation process for small IP based video camera systems or as part of a larger distributed system. It is an unmanaged network switch that has a single front panel slide-switch to select between normal network use and an enhanced CCTV mode. Its small size and simplicity of installation help reduce the complexity of IP systems. It is available as a four port QSW4 or an eight port QSW8 PoE device.

Features

This network switch is straightforward to understand and should require no specialist skills to install

9.0 out of 10 16

The QSW4 switch has four PoE enabled ports; these are Endspan (Mode A) configured and autonegotiate with PoE enabled cameras or compatible devices when connected. Two “Uplink” ports are also provided. These allow for a recording server and a viewing station PC or links to other network devices to be connected. In CCTV mode the switch PoE ports can only communicate with the Uplink ports. A small green indicator on the front panel identifies this CCTV mode is set, this mode increases the connection distance to a stated 250 metres. Alternatively, the Network setting allows the device to operate as a six port switch with full communication allowed between all ports but the PoE ports are distance limited to the normal 100metre maximum. The QSW4 has a 1Gb/s data handling capacity and the QSW8 extends this to 7Gb/s. While the QSW4’s uplinks operate at 10/100 Mb/s the QSW8 unit’s uplink ports also support 1Gb/s connections.

Operation With the power supply connected, the recorder and viewing PC or other network devices can be

attached to the Uplink network connectors. LEDs on the Uplink ports indicate connection status and data activity while the PoE port LEDs indicate PoE active connection and data activity. An earth point is provided on the back of the case with a strong recommendation that this is suitably grounded for additional protection from lightning. This is particularly important for longer or external cable runs. Being an unmanaged switch there is no configuration necessary but this does mean that there are no configurable security features available. In operation the PoE ports provided 54.4 volts between pins 1 & 2 and 3 & 6 data pairs to a connected test camera confirming Endspan connectivity. There is a stated 60W maximum power available across the four PoE ports that can be shared among the four channels to a maximum of 30W for up to two channels, 15W for each of the four channels or one at 30W and two at 15W, allowing flexibility in your choice of cameras and loading. When in CCTV mode the stated range is extended from 100 to 250 metres but the transmission rate is then held to 10Mb/s but this should not impact on single PoE camera connections. Its Store & Forward packet handling should provide a level of error checking at extended distances when in this CCTV mode.

Conclusion This network switch is straightforward to understand and should require no specialist skills to install. Its extended range PoE ports may be helpful where small installations require IP cameras beyond the conventional 100 metre Ethernet limitation.

What’s in the box? Padlock Instructions Battery

ith every aspect of our daily lives now being driven by, or via, smart devices the market is seeing the introduction of many new security products that utilise the wireless capabilities of mobile phones. For example, as most people always have their phone on them, why not do away with the need for a wallet and a bunch of keys and simply use the phone as the tool for making transactions and also opening locks? This is where we are today. The Master Lock Bluetooth Smart 4400D indoor padlock is one such security device, giving users the control to protect property using a smartphone and app. Available in the UK from Securikey (priced at time of publishing at £84.30) the unit has a zinc body with boron carbide shackle and features double locking for added protection and is compatible with iOS 8 onwards and Android 4.3 onwards. The unit comes with Quick Start instructions conveniently written in 19 languages and essentially only needs the installation of the free Master Lock Vault eLocks app to begin use. For the purpose of the review we used a Samsung S6 phone, downloading the app from the Google Play store.

Set up and use

The padlock is backed up by a simple app which allows you to manage and monitor the unit, so does it spell the end of the key or combination lock?

8 out of 10 18

Once the app is installed and while still connected to the internet you begin the set-up of the lock by providing an email address to which Master Lock will send a form for registering an account. Once this has been completed the app directs you through the process starting with entering the 12digit activation code written on the instruction leaflet. This pairs the lock with the phone and allows the lock to be opened by pressing one of the keys on the centre of the unit. The light on the padlock is green during the five second period you have to unlock it. When locking the unit the light flashes blue. The lock is managed entirely through the app which allows ‘guest’ users to be in control of the lock, particularly suitable for couples or for granting access to house sitters etc. The app also provides a history of the lock giving you an audit trail showing when then lock was opened and by whom. While all this is perfectly fine, cynics will wonder “what happens when you don’t have your phone or if you lose it?” and that issue has been catered for with this lock as it has a primary ‘locker’ code built in. The central wheel on the padlock has four directional buttons (any of which

Master Lock 4400D Bluetooth indoor padlock can be used to open the lock in conjunction with the app) and there is a seven code combination of these that can be manually entered to take control of the lock. The padlock itself uses a CR2450 battery, which is included in the box, giving an estimated two year life. When the time comes for a replacement to be fitted the lock central light shows yellow indicating low power. The battery cannot be removed when the unit is locked so the padlock must be opened before the battery compartment will slide fully out. Should the battery die while the unit is locked there is a simple procedure to follow in order to remove the old battery which needs either the Bluetooth connection or primary code.

Conclusion This is the first Bluetooth padlock we have tried and it certainly seems to have all the bases covered in terms of what could go wrong with such a system when users lose their phone, experience battery failure or forget the primary code. There is also an outdoor padlock (4401LHD) available from Securikey when weather resistance is required. In tests we found that the app doesn’t need to be running for the lock to be opened, but Bluetooth must be switched on and the phone must be in the vicinity of the padlock to connect to it. This means you don’t need to start up the app each time you want to unlock the unit, just turn on the Bluetooth and you’ll be able to talk to it. A big bonus. The padlock is backed up by a simple app which allows you to manage and monitor the unit, so does it spell the end of the key or combination lock? Obviously it is the more expensive option but it puts an end to the possibility of someone using lock picks to bypass the unit as there is no key slot. The only weak spot in the lock is the plastic front which if burned/broken away could give access to the internal structure. However this is going to be much trickier than picking a standard lock. As padlocks go, this is a solid product for the pricier end of the market.

Eaton Enables 100% Wireless Security for Homes Eaton has added three new radio products to its Scantronic and Menvier security ranges, enabling a 100 per cent radio solution and wire-free installation. The power management company’s SDR-RINT internal sounder, SDR-xEXT external sounders and KEY-RKPZ two-way radio keypad are completely wire-free, enabling fast and easy installation, minimal disruption to the building and greater flexibility in mounting. “Scantronic was one of the first with a radio solution for security and our range is still regarded as one of the most reliable in the market,” said Tony Walsh, security business leader at Eaton. “Until now, it’s still been necessary for some components to be wired. While we have had other workable solutions, these latest devices are wireless out of the box.” Ideal for hard-to-reach areas that are out of earshot of wired keypads or panels, the SDR-RINT internal sounder is designed to blend in easily in entrance halls and other aesthetically sensitive areas. The internal sounder is connected via either a radio expander or a control unit with built-in radio capability. It also produces all system sounds, including entry/exit, fault and alarm tones. Additionally, multiple internal radio sounders can be installed on the same system. The SDR-xEXT range of external sounders, designed for use with the i-on range and new Menvier 868MHz systems, is available in blue, amber and red with options for radio, wired and decoy, with free screen printing available in the UK. Easy to install, the external sounder features a selfsupporting lid, built-in spirit-level and revolving fixing holes, which make for straightforward mounting, including fitting on uneven surfaces. High-power comfort LEDs and LED strobes offer reassurance, the external sounder’s long radio range and battery life give the installer a broad choice of installation options.

KEY-RKPZ two-way radio keypad

SDR-RINT internal radio sounder

Developed to meet growing demand for wire-free domestic installations, the KEY-RKPZ two-way keypad is a significant addition to Eaton’s radio range. The stylish, class-leading keypad offers the installer full access to configure, and the user to set or unset the system. In addition, the customer has greater flexibility when it comes to choosing the location of the keypads. The keypad is linked wirelessly to its own base station, which communicates with the control unit via a standard RS485 wired connection. Two-wire zone (FSL) terminals further expand the options for installation. “The radio solutions can fit pretty much anywhere in the premises with very little effort so the new products significantly decrease the amount of time you have to spend on installation,” explained Glenn Foot, technical manager for Eaton’s security business. “Other manufacturers do have radio keypads that generally work on one or two panels at a time. Our approach is that the keypad works on every control unit that we sell within the i-on and New Menvier range.” “The advantage with the radio solutions is that they also work in a retrofit arrangement without damage to décor or anything else in the home,” added Walsh. With increasing adoption of radio-based security systems in the residential sector, Eaton’s 100 per cent radio solutions are fully compliant with the latest European standards.

INTERVIEW

Access all areas “We believe that cards will always have a place in the market. However, it is clear that smart phones enabled with BLE will have a big impact on the market

This month we speak to Stephen Greenaway of Nortech about the access control market and future business plans tephen Greenaway is the Business Development Director at Nortech. He joined the company In April 2016 with 30 years of industry experience behind him working for the likes of MR Access, Indala and Storm. PSI caught up with him to discuss the future of access control and the lifespan of ID cards:

S

How has the last year been for you? We have had a good twelve months from both a sales and business structure point of view. Revenue is up on the previous twelve months and we have made two significant appointments to the Management Team giving us much greater strength and depth. The Nedap ANPR Access HD automatically reads the number plates of approaching vehicles at distances of up to 10 metres

Have you seen any access control trends emerge over recent years? There have been several new trends with a few starting to take hold and gain momentum. It looks like biometrics, after many false starts, is finally making an impact in the market. Bluetooth, specifically BLE card readers and credentials are really gaining momentum and this is certainly going to change the way we perceive readers and credentials. And have there been any growth areas in terms of sectors (ie schools, airports etc)? We have seen good growth across all sectors. The only sector within our portfolio that is growing at a faster rate than the others is parking management. This is being driven by hotels who occupy prime locations within cities needing to

24

manage their limited city centre parking and control who has access. Are there any common installation questions that arise on training days? Our products are designed to be intuitive in terms of set up so there are very few common questions. We focus our training days on specific products within our range. Norpass3 Access Control will be a full day whereas ANPR and AVI products might just take up a half-day of training. In addition to open training days, we tailor training days for customers who want specific or detailed assistance. How long do you think it will be before electronic ID cards are replaced by smartphones or is it unnecessary? We believe that cards will always have a place in the market. However, it is clear that smart phones enabled with BLE will have a big impact on the market. How do you go about choosing the installers that you recommend? Our approved installers have undergone training at Nortech which is a prerequisite before referral of sales leads. Our approved installers have to provide first class support for our products and represent the brand in professional and courteous manner. We frequently accompany approved installers to site and work closely with them to ensure that we are delivering the best solution for the end customer. Do you have any future goals for the company? Our goal is to maintain our strong market growth and to maintain our professional

“One thing is for sure, the security industry is changing and the survivors will be the most nimble and customer-focused companies approach to an ever changing market. We see our strength in being able to move quickly and provide not only standard systems and products but to be able to provide a bespoke solution within a very short timeframe. Our greatest strength is that we are able to provide an integrated security and access control solution starting at the main gate and working right through the parking area, through the building and then finally control the exit back at the car park area. What are your predictions for the next few years in the security industry? We believe that cloud based control systems and the use of mobile devices to control access will increase significantly. In our ever changing world vehicle access control will also

show a significant growth. Whether it is simply granting vehicles permission for access to high profile sites such as government or critical infrastructure buildings or revenue generation in public places, traffic management is here to stay. One thing is for sure, the security industry is changing and the survivors will be the most nimble and customer-focused companies.

ASK THE EXPERT

Fire logbooks and your responsibilites

Do you know the importance of the fire alarm logbook and are you aware of what you should be doing with one?

“There have been cases in the past where installation companies have had legal actions taken against them because there was insufficient information provided”

W

riting in his latest blog, Graham Simons of the Fire Industry Association (FIA) says that the fire log book is quite simply a record of everything related to fire safety in the building. It should contain the date, time, and the reason for the alarm sounding. Was it a false alarm? Was it a weekly test or fire drill? Was it a real fire and did somebody get hurt? What device caused the alarm? All of these aspects should be recorded. A log book is not the sort of document that can just be written the back of notebook, as there are certain requirements in the types of information that should be recorded. To find out more and to discuss what role installers have with fire log books, PSI caught up with Robert Thilthorpe and Will Lloyd, Technical Managers for the FIA. Between them they have decades of experience and a wealth of knowledge just waiting to be explored. Why are log books so important? Will: They provide valuable evidence of the history of the fire detection and alarm system not only in terms of servicing and testing, but of false alarms and the causes and solutions to those false alarms. Robert: And a logbook provides everyone with important information about the fire alarm system

www.psimagazine.co.uk

installed in the premises. It’s a vital document that assists maintenance companies with the maintenance of the system. What is the main rule/regulation regarding log books that installers should be following? Robert: Recording in the system log book is a key factor for BS 5389-1 (Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings –Part 1: Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises), which is the British Standard for fire alarm systems. Are there any other considerations, things that installers need to be aware of, such as legal implications? Will: The logbook might provide evidence of compliance with certain fire safety legislation (such as the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005, the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010). If something goes wrong, what do you do? If the Fire and Rescue Services ask to see your fire

alarm logbook, they will want to see all the information recorded. There have been cases in the past where installation companies have had legal actions taken against them because there was insufficient information provided. If you can prove that you did everything by the book – and you have a record of that in the logbook – then you should be reasonably safe. But if you don’t write anything or you make false records then expect the law to catch up with you eventually. You have to consider the Localism Act too – the Fire and Rescue Service can now charge for false alarms. So if you can prove that you haven’t had any false alarms, and the system has been maintained, then there shouldn’t be any cause for concern. But on top of that, the logbook tells the story of the fire alarms. It helps to arrange the service and make sure it’s done regularly. You can see exactly who did what, and when – so you can see who usually services the alarm. And if the service engineer that is due to do it is unavailable, you can schedule someone else, and their name will go next to exactly all they did. A good service engineer can read a logbook and see the story of the alarm – a mine of information if you know how to use it. You can phone up people to see when things happened and get more information if you need to, especially if there has been an ongoing problem with it and you’re new on the case.

s So with that in mind, what should installers be looking out for and recording in the log book? Will: Everything! All events that happen to the fire detection and alarm system should be recorded in the logbook. Robert: BS 5839-1 gives guidance on what should be recorded in the log book, so if you’re not sure, check there first. But the main thing is to include

Members of the FIA can download a free logbook that complies with all standards, as well as a number of guidance documents. any major non-compliances and variations, signal levels for wireless fire alarm systems, and any false alarms. False alarms should be recorded both by the user and the maintenance company. What should an installer/maintainer do if they discover information in the log book about a high amount of false alarms? Robert: They should discuss with the owners of the premises the reasons behind the false alarms and then put in measures to address and reduce the level of false alarms. Getting this right is really important. If you need guidance on this, it is available in the ‘Reducing the Cost of False Alarms’ section of the FIA website. What should an installer/maintainer do if they discover information in the log book that is missing or inaccurate? Robert: Simple: they should correct or add the appropriate information. Will: Remind users of the need to fill out the log book, because it is for their safety as well. And sometimes the insurance company wants to know about fire alarm log book. They’ll always ask “Did you get the fire alarm serviced correctly?” It’s protection, piece of mind. So just remind users of that to encourage them to fill it out regularly with all the correct information. It’s good customer service, after all. When should an installer or maintainer use a log book and do they need to explain to the end user what the log book is for? Robert: The British Standard (BS 5839-1) states: “A logbook in which all events, including fire alarm signals, faults signals, system tests and maintenance visits, can be recorded.” It basically means that if the maintenance company follows BS 5839-1, the British Standard for fire alarm systems, then there will always be a log book. So if there is one, and there ought to be, then it should be getting used every time. Will: It’s important to remember that the log book is for the end user as well as the maintenance company. They should be recording when they do their weekly/monthly checks and recording the results in the log book. Is there any other advice you might give to an installer about the log book? Will: Keep it up-to-date, and don’t throw it away when its full! You might need to refer back to it in the future, you never know.

PANEL

Worries and woes What issues do the fire/security industry need to tackle asap? Is there something that could be a potential problem in the future if nothing is done about it today? The PSI Panel ponders problems... his month we have given the PSI Panel free reign to tell us what concerns they have regarding any issue with today’s industry that they feel could develop into something troublesome in the future. So here are the problems that are giving the experts sleepless nights:

T

Jamie Barnfield IDIS Europe One issue that faces many manufacturers and installers is the outbidding of projects by contractors outside of the security industry such as local electricians and even local handy men. A few years ago a greater level of expertise was required when fitting various security equipment and end users demanded to see certifications from manufacturers that proved engineers had completed adequate product training and the company having NSI and BSIA accreditations. However, it seems end users, particularly for small implementations, are demanding neither. These under skilled folks are also purchasing kit from the same places as reputable installers. With the proliferation of plug-and-play, many one man bands and their customers obviously assume that it really is as simple as plugging a device into a laptop and therefore opt for the lowest installation cost. The result is that once unskilled firms start installing a particular product and the system doesn’t work, the finger is well and truly pointed at the manufacturer, implying a faulty or poor quality product. This takes a lot of technical support time to prove to the end user than their preferred installer should have stuck to light fixtures. We cannot blame the resellers for selling commercial based security products to anyone who walks through their door as they simply need to sell stock in order to operate. Nor can we blame advances in technology making

www.psimagazine.co.uk

security equipment easier to install, since any reputable manufacturer runs certification programs for all their installation partners. At IDIS, for instance, our core product offering is plug-and-play, yet we insist all our partners complete a training program giving engineers a basic understand of networks, how the technology is enabling zero configuration, while demonstrating our range of cameras explaining which are best suited to any given environment. I believe the UK security industry should be looking towards legislation utilised in other countries, such as Abu Dhabi, UAE. To install any security solution within this Emirate, you need a licence issued by the Ministry on Interior, making sure no unqualified person or company can undertake a security installation and therefore customers are not beleaguered with poor or inadequate systems with the manufacturer shouldering the burden.

“With the proliferation of plug-and-play, many one man bands and their customers obviously assume that it really is as simple as plugging a device into a laptop and therefore opt for the lowest installation cost”

Stephen Adams BAFE Whilst the issues of new technology and web based automation are important and relevant to the fire protection industry, they all currently have to address the issue of false activation reduction. The security industry and Police recognised this many years ago and the startling reductions in false alarms since that time are evidence that an industry and the enforcement body working together can bring about significant benefit for all stakeholders. The disciplines for fire alarm systems are different – not least because unlike security (continued over)

“The pressures on resources across the whole of the public sector has meant that many Fire and Rescue Services have reduced the response service that they give to automatic fire alarms”

alarms, they are never switched off and there is undoubtedly an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ mentality. Newer systems have much more sophisticated monitoring and addressable features, but it still requires active intervention to locate and address a problem. It is also a key fact that all fire precautions – passive and active, alarms sprinklers or extinguishers - are there to protect lives, as well as property, and therefore the response from the Fire and Rescue Services always has to prioritise this fact. However the pressures on resources across the whole of the public sector has meant that many Fire and Rescue Services have reduced the response service that they give to automatic fire alarms, in part because of the level of false calls they have received. Previous policies from the Chief Fire Officers Association, whilst helpful and well thought out have not received universal support because of the financial pressures. A recent, well publicised study by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with BRE and other stakeholders (including BAFE and FIA) into the causes of false alarms identified many very basic design and servicing problems. If these are solved, especially in existing systems then real improvements will be seen. There is hope now, especially since the Home Office has taken responsibility for the Fire Services that there will be initiatives to change the patchy response to alarms. Through the recognition and validation of well designed, installed and (crucially) maintained systems to reduce the number of false activations and coupled with accurate and rapid passing of alarm signals through ARCs to the Fire Service there is a genuine opportunity to tackle this problem.

Stephen D Green Security Institute One significant issue facing the international security industry today remains, depressingly, the same as it always has been; the issue of communications. I refer not to the so-called “digital revolution”, the peculiarities of TCP/IP transmission or the subsequent snowstorm of cyber security, but rather to good old-fashioned conversation. We, as a profession, simply do not talk or listen well enough. The listening part, you would have thought, should be simple. Just sit, don’t interrupt and let the client tell you all about his most pressing security risks. However, time and time again, the listener couldn’t care less what the client’s gripes actually are. He or she is instead on a 32

mission to shift specific solutions, to the point where almost any problem raised will be addressed from a range of generic, standardised responses. This one-size-fits-all, off-the-peg approach to selling security, both services and technology, leads to frequent mismatches of solution to problem, unrealistically set and subsequently unfilled expectations, more bad press for the industry and, ultimately, loss for the client. Unfortunately, we appear no better at broadcasting information than receiving it. The fundamental purpose of security technology is to aid in the delivery of effective security. If it doesn’t do that, no matter what other smart tricks it can do, it is has failed. Yet somehow, with Groundhog Day-like regularity, products are launched onto a market that has no immediate need of them and/or doesn’t know how to use them. The advent of IP, for example, found many security companies lacking the requisite skills to advise clients effectively, with wildly inaccurate information being disseminated under the guise of “expertise”. Today, drones are the latest flavour of the month to hit an ill-prepared security industry. While frenzied manufacturers discover ever more imaginative uses for their wares, clients remain none the wiser on the practicality and legality of deploying such devices as their security advisors are themselves unclear. My clarion call to the industry, therefore, is to improve our collective communications skills such that we are able to match client need to solution, and vice versa, in a professional and competent manner.

David Davies - DVS The issue I would like to talk about is integration. With more and more system integrators wanting value added systems that achieve more from their security systems, the battle of integration support is at full pace. Take CCTV systems for example, with so much choice on the market and so much access, customers don’t just want a video feed, they want it to work for them. This could be using the on-board analytics or special feature sets, which is great, but then what about when it comes to systems spread over multiple platforms, e.g. access control, intruder, fire, intercoms etc. etc. in reality these are still done over multiple platforms, and can be expensive and difficult to commission. Whilst most of the major software houses support and constantly develop

www.psimagazine.co.uk

EDIT panel sep16_PSI_mar15 30/08/2016 16:24 Page 4

integration into their equipment, this still can be expensive and sometimes with limited functionality. With ONVIF now being one of the main focus points for open platform operation, it would be nice to see further development of this to include access , intruder , intercom based products where a simple interface would allow IP equipment to be added to a DVR/NVR type platform and make it easy to add and use, whilst remaining on one common platform. I’ve been involved in a lot of integration over the past few years and I think the market will be driven towards improved and simplified integration within the CCTV platform. As technology costs continue to fall and hardware resource increases, I think we are far closer to a new era of product integration and support, which will make this industry an even more exciting arena to play in.

Brett Ennals - Cento In the current economic climate, the key factor affecting all businesses within the fire and security industry is undoubtedly the skills shortage. The market is currently faced with a significant skills shortage that sees a lack of trained applicants in comparison to the demand and expectations of employers. In turn, the increased demand for skilled workers has lead to companies offering increased salaries, especially to engineers. If employers continue to offer higher salaries to engineers this could be detrimental to engineers’ salary expectations, increasing the national average and thus making it increasingly challenging for smaller companies to employ qualified individuals. Industry individuals need to become aware of this problem quickly to prevent permanent damage to the fire and security sectors. It is important to consider that a skills shortage creates people movement within the market and therefore it is vital for employers to value employees and ensure the salaries provided are in line with market rates in order to minimise movement and maximise retention. Furthermore, the industry needs to carefully manage the salaries that are being offered in order to avoid salary expectations increasing dramatically. From the information gained through our salary guide database, it is apparent that although a competitive salary is appealing to candidates, the entire salary package itself is overall more important. It is imperative that for employers to attain

www.psimagazine.co.uk

and retain staff in the current economic climate, a complete salary package should be offered, this could include training opportunities, career progression opportunities, flexible working hours for example, and should aim to benefit the employer as well as the employee.

Ken Kay - Fidelity Integrated Systems A very big issue facing the security industry today and going forward I believe is safety of gates and shutters. Unlike the fire industry where ‘science’ can be applied when designing a system so that you can clearly demonstrate how you arrived at your design with no comebacks. Gate safety comes under the rather grey area of European Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), especially the Directive’s Essential Health and Safety Requirements, be CE marked and be accompanied by a Declaration of Conformity. To aid manufacturers, installers and service companies to comply with the Machinery Directive’s requirements, a “harmonised” European product standard for gates was published in 2003: EN 13241-1. In July 2015 the European Commission published a warning to the effect that the harmonised standard did not entirely satisfy the Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSRs) of the Machinery Directive and consequently compliance with the standard no longer conferred automatic presumption of conformity with the EHSRs. (DHF Powered Door Group). You are required to carry out a risk assessment, which includes, 1) Determination of the limits of the machinery, 2) Hazard Identification, 3) Risk Estimation. From these you can then produce a risk evaluation.

This is where the problem arises, you could send three different ‘experts’ to a particular gate and receive three different reports all technically correct but each one interprets the Machine Directive differently whilst carrying out the risk assessment. All three reports would be correct to certain degrees but too much human error can come into play. The answer: The government needs to set a standards authority for gate safety, it needs to be standalone and be relative only to gate safety, it can include parts from the Machine Directive but people with first-hand knowledge of all the complexities of the different types and styles of gates need to be involved. This will involve manufactures, installers as well as and especially those who service gates. Will the government do anything, how can they not when its people’s lives that are at risk, will they? Watch this space!

Joel Babb - Farsight Security Services New technology is arriving on the security market at a rate of knots. Security systems are advancing and customer demands are growing. As fantastic as it is see the growth of technology within our sector, the customer support provided needs to keep up with the pace. Manufacturers must ensure the products they are d releasing on to the market are delivering the promises they make. Secondly, they need to provide the right level of after-sales support for integrators. In the UK, our security marketplace is unique. We are one of the biggest users of remotely monitored systems and ultimately that presents a different set of pressures. Manufacturers need to keep these in mind when they are selling to the UK market. For example, at Farsight we often see

“Manufacturers need to be open and honest about what their systems are truly capable of achieving from the outset. In not doing so, installers are put under pressure” 34

integrators struggle to achieve the high definition footage promised from new technology when the images are streamed. During the training and pre-sales process these potential limitations should be made very clear and appropriate after-sales support provided to help installers get the best possible quality from new systems. Manufacturers need to be open and honest about what their systems are truly capable of achieving from the outset. In not doing so, installers are put under pressure to make systems deliver without the correct infrastructure in place and customers are left despondent with the results – potentially putting their site at risk. There are three things manufacturers must do. If something isn’t done to address the issues, the industry could end up in a dangerous cycle of overselling and underdelivering. Manufacturers need to be honest about their products capabilities and potential limitations from the outset. Similarly, they need to develop a robust after-sales UK support network – not overseas centres that are costly to contact or slow to respond. Finally, manufacturers need to listen to integrators – they first and foremost need to acknowledge features that aren’t working and provide fixes, before bringing new, shiny technology and features on to the market. They need to get their current provisions right first.

Guy Dodd - Pyronix Technology has always been a key driver for our market. However, more recently this pressure has increased with Cloud, Apps and IoT. As we delve into cloud and appbased solutions, we are entering new waters and opening the door for convergence; as we develop automation, automation will develop security. The main issue that this poses is that our security is tried and tested to stringent standards to which we must adhere. We ensure that we offer robust, reliable and fit-for-purpose security, while any company outside of our industry can develop peripherals and systems that do not have such rigorous testing or standards in place. As a result, companies could seemingly offer a comparative security solution at a competitive rate, without the same level of security. Subsequently, we would be losing our foothold in the market, while the end user suffers with substandard security. (continued over)

“We need to ensure that we do not lose sight of our primary objective; providing the best possible security solutions”

Further issues this raises are mainstream security companies neglecting the reliance and performance of their security solutions to compete with the influx of non-security companies. A focus shift towards the functionality of apps and automation could see a reduction in the level of security, wherein a security solution with automation options becomes the reverse, removing the primary purpose of our offerings – to protect against intrusion. This is exacerbated further by the types of company that enter into our industry. There is a risk that companies that already provide popular services directly to end users could add security to their offerings. The issue here is that, should end users adopt this security, traditional installation companies and manufacturers are directly bypassed as the nonsecurity companies sell to their long established and trusted route to customers. To combat these issues, we need to ensure that we do not lose sight of our primary objective; providing the best possible security solutions. New companies entering the market is inevitable, but if we can maintain focus while adopting new technology, we maintain our competitive advantage. New companies can only offer new services, therefore we must maintain our superior, trusted and longestablished security while adding competitive lifestyle functionality.

John Allen - Axis Traditional access control is fast being changed by demands from buyers, users and their consultant designers. Whereas traditional buyers of access control

36

systems were typically security managers, IT is now more involved and on numerous occasions they are the point of reference and decision for access control preference and purchase. To keep abreast of rapidly changing times, the traditional access control manufactures need to adopt innovative business models, focused on value creation through open systems and software as a means to differentiation. Why? The why is obvious… traditional access control is increasingly expected to form part of a wider range of building control, connected via company infrastructures, i.e. networks. It is also expected to contribute in a connected way, to the fabric of building management, and to be simpler to understand, operate and interface. Further, the growth in alternate forms of credential is developing, spurred on not by security and who goes where and when, but by the IoT and by the ubiquitous smartphone. Conclusions; access control users want and expect the richer, superior experience they see every day in their personal devices and they don’t see why that should not include physical security: so ‘security’, which used to be developed as a series of concentric layers out to inward is moving inexorably to being deployed in the other direction – user richness with flexibility at the edge. This does not mean security is any less important, quite the reverse in fact. Users and ‘deciders’ expect and want increased levels of security and assuredness for their premises and their people, driven by the same standards and expectations they have in their IT networks, systems and software. Many of our successful providers have grown with access control over the years, but have kept the same business model: focus on hardware design as the core revenue generator. Most created administration software and subsidised the sell, mistakenly believing hardware sales defined the value of their business. This seems under threat as software rapidly defines value and is the differentiator. Hardware has less chance to shine. ONVIF develops durable requirements for the management of security solutions and stimulates openness, encouraging wider devices integration and interoperability. The conclusions are that the access control industry needs to embrace change and adapt to new surroundings, based on controller/admin software openness and a decision of where our values are best able to accrue profits. We have embraced change many times in the past and if we do so again without fear, we can look

forward to very new opportunities. I fear if we do not, some of our great companies will suffer.

Simon Banks - CSL These are exciting times for the Security Sector. New technology brings with it new challenges, notably the demand for new skills to understand and implement. Each day the price of skills is increasing. The rarer it is, the more expensive it becomes. I have been concerned about the skills gap in all of our service sectors for some time. The provision of a plumber or an electrician is a challenge for the right price and availability. The security sector is no different. We need to flood our sector with skills. It’s essential that the industry supports the Government's Trailblazer Apprenticeship initiative and the promotion of hybrid skillsets – Fire and Security – for both new and existing engineers. The future Trailblazer curriculum is designed with advanced tech in mind to attract

the very best Apprentices into our industry, quickly and professionally. For the economic cycle of life, alarm companies need to pay fair salaries, fund more skills and open their minds and businesses to help balance this delicate ecosystem. We must act fast to maintain a pipeline of talent to keep pace with consumer demand and competition from close verticals. Like many businesses, we are committed to our team. All are shareholders and we create new career opportunities as we grow. We recognise that some graduates took a wrong turn at the age of 18 only to find themselves at 21 with £60k of debt and few prospects – 25% of graduates are unemployed. It’s vital that we recognise this latent talent and provide a credible career path in our world-class industry. Companies must embrace new talent in the same way they crave the latest gadget. One cannot thrive without the other.

Meet the installer Do you use a distributor or buy direct from manufacturers? A combination. We ideally prefer working through channel distribution. Since we deliver IT infrastructure as well as security services, we prefer distributors to offer both, such as Anixter and Mayflex. However, specific security manufacturers don’t always utilise distribution, so we have close relationships with surveillance and access control vendors that run incredibly rewarding partner programs. Sony is one such example, where we recently became a Gold Certified Partner, which gives us the benefit of joint marketing initiatives, as well as being able to offer our customers incredibly attractive pricing. Is third party accreditation beneficial to your company? Absolutely critical. Until 2012, NG Bailey subcontracted security installations, while at the same time delivering prestigious, highly complex IT infrastructure projects. With the proliferation of IP security solutions and based on the quality of our IT services, we and our customers saw the benefit of NG Bailey as a single supplier for both IT and security. Achieving NSI NACOSS Gold gave us the credibility to do just that, plus it gives peace of mind and purchasing confidence to existing customers as well as potential new ones. What would be a typical project for you? When we started offering security services, we focused on the enterprise sector, particularly via the construction industry and concentrated on over 500 of our existing private and public sector customers. Our typical security project covers network implementation, surveillance (including analytics and VMS), access control, intruder, server storage, PA, and intercom tightly integrated into security management platforms, plus we also deliver civil works encompassing physical barriers, gates and fencing. Our services comprise system design, installation, commissioning, nationwide maintenance and monitoring of IT and security from our dedicated Network Operating Centre (NOC), which has the proficiencies of an alarm receiving centre (ARC) as well as specialist IT capabilities. We are passionate about truly open platform systems that futureproof customers’ security investments. We believe customers should be

able to choose best of breed technologies. Closed protocol solutions either lead to rip-and-replace or expensively lock-in customers when they need to scale or adapt. It’s the flexible open platform systems that we’re delivering for organisations where security is mission critical—for major enterprises, property management, high end residential, healthcare, leisure and major retail chains. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Customers requesting high quality and performance surveillance at a very low price point. The ‘stack them high and sell them low’ approach is impacting the entire security industry. A recent analyst report downgraded projected global growth since the flood of Chinese security products is commoditising the market and eroding integrator’s technical expertise. To combat this, we are educating the market so that there’s no need to trade quality and performance for price. High quality, IP-based open architecture security systems from reputable manufacturers are designed and developed to the highest standards, delivering higher performance, resilience and flexibility. A low initial price point usually results in high failure rates, increased maintenance costs and an inability to scale and adapt, resulting in increased risk coupled with a high total cost of ownership.

architecture and compliant standards, resulting in fully compatible solutions. In the data world, IEEE 802.3 underpins every Ethernet protocol in existence, allowing a myriad of devices to connect to a network. The security industry lags behind with no equivalent standard. Developing and maintaining SDKs are expensive, inefficient and lack seamless and rich connectivity. Further, bandwidth and storage concerns regarding surveillance are a myth considering advances in compression technologies. We are also seeing architects designing and retrofitting buildings to be smarter and more energy efficient with a plan to run everything on one network.

What would make your job easier? Is home automation something you are looking at? One of our strategic markets is high-end residential. Potential residents moving into these luxury properties are not price sensitive; hence we are able to install sophisticated automation systems whereby security, HVAC and audio visual are controlled from a smart pad as well as from remote devices. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Any trouble recruiting? Absolutely. NG Bailey is addressing this with its own apprentice scheme. In 2015 we were honored to join the 5% Club; a select group of companies committed to increasing the number of apprentices and graduates in the workforce. The last semi-final England World Cup team in 1990 was prior to the FA taking Premier League control, and it’s no coincidence that our last World Cup success was when my team, Millwall, were top of what is now the Premier League. I’m also convinced that the England Rugby team will raise the Rugby World Cup again if not in 2019 then perhaps in 2023. If you won £25,000 what would you do with it? I’d buy Millwall, become the chairman, install a high-quality 4K open architecture surveillance system and still have more than enough money left to buy my girlfriend an imported engagement ring.

Gotta catch ‘em all? hen security operators at Farsight Security Services received an alarm in the early hours of Saturday 23 July standard procedures were followed to identify and address the cause. Upon reviewing CCTV footage from the alarm, operators spotted three individuals acting suspiciously, using their mobile phones to navigate the site. With CCTV footage being viewed live, the police were notified and despatched to the site. On arrival, the police confronted the individuals and escorted them from the site, issuing each with a warning. At first, nothing about this incident stands out as particularly remarkable. However, in this particular incident the intruders had a new explanation for their presence. Upon being questioned, the individuals revealed they had been playing the augmented reality game PokémonGO. So far the game has reportedly had over 75 million downloads and although PokémonGO blurs the lines between reality and unreality, some of the security problems it is causing are very real indeed. The immediate safety issues posed by the game are clear. Headlines have told the story of players robbed of their phones as they look for their next Pokémon. One story even claimed teenagers had been caught in choppy waters trying to catch the virtual creatures off the coast of Hastings. However, security concerns stretch from beyond the individual to businesses and private residences too – as the incident encountered by Farsight goes to show. Even the police have been affected. Recently PokémonGO triggered a terrorism security alert after dozens of players descended on Leicestershire Police’s headquarters, clutching their phones and taking photos. Police chiefs had to issue a warning to PokémonGO gamers to be mindful of their actions given the security threat levels around

W

civic buildings such as police stations. Malcolm O’Shea-Barnes, senior operations manager at Farsight Security Services, explained: “The virtual creatures found in PokémonGO can be found anywhere and ingame features can be accessed at locations called ‘PokéStops’. These can be located on private property and players locate them using their mobile phones. “It’s quite clear what security risks businesses could face from individuals attempting to access a site to catch Pokémon or reach PokéStops. Not only could this lead to individuals breaking and entering, leaving a site vulnerable, it could also be a safety risk to those trespassing on the site. “Many sites we monitor pose serious safety issues to those without the correct PPE. Trespassers could put themselves in harm’s way attempting to access private property – in many circumstances security isn’t simply in place to keep valuable goods safe, it’s often in the best interests of the public too. “Although likely done naïve of the potential consequences, those illegally entering private premises – whether to play PokémonGO or for any other reason – undermine the security of a site and their own personal safety.” Incidents like the one encountered by Farsight are likely to be picked up by CCTV systems. The least that could happen is a waste of police or business keyholders’ time if they are called out following an intrusion by a PokémonGO player. So what can be done to proactively reduce the security risks posed by PokémonGO, and other similar games? Malcolm O’Shea-Barnes advises business owners to check whether there is a PokéStop or Gym nearby or on their premises, adding: “Unfortunately there is little that can be done to immediately rectify this but business owners can send a removal request directly to Niantic, PokémonGO’s developer.” If end-users express concern regarding PokémonGO, the best advice security professionals can offer is to visit the support website, submit a request and report an issue with a Gym or PokéStop.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA OAP caught keying car in Kent

An elderly man has been caught by CCTV brazenly keying the side of a luxury car during a random attack in Ashford, Kent. Footage shows the man creeping onto a woman's driveway before dragging his key down the side of her Audi. The pensioner then walked away as if nothing had happened. Police identified the suspect and ordered him to pay for damages to the vehicle. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0ExeLAH9Wo

M23 driver does a u-turn

Sussex Police released the footage capturing the moment a confused pensioner drove the wrong way down the M23 for six miles forcing other vehicles to swerve. The pensioner, who had just returned to the UK on a flight to Gatwick, drove the wrong way down the busy motorway for six miles before being stopped. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwEO3QdU-1A

Gotta catch ‘em aaaaaal!

The security risks of the latest craze, Pokemon Go, are discussed elsewhere in this edition, however there are also dangers to players as this camera footage shows. This is the moment a police officer saves a man who was so absorbed in his Pokemon GO game that he walked straight into a pond in the Peruvian capital, Lima. He strolls right across the path and onto some rocks near the pond, where he loses his balance and then ends up crashing into the cold water. Geocaching is so much safer…

As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Daydreaming passenger saved at station

We’ve had similar items to this one before and thankfully they show that no one was hurt, but it’s a close thing this time. A woman is seen on CCTV footage walking towards the tracks at Melbourne's busy Parliament train station. Her head is looking off to the side, and she seems completely unaware of her surroundings until she falls from the platform on to the tracks. Fast-acting commuters rush to help her and another signals to the train driver. www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9ewLu9SoOc

The Whirlwind has still got it! How often have you done something amazing only for there to be no one there to see you do it? This CCTV footage is the proof that, playing on his own in a pub in Coulsdon, the former snooker star Jimmy White can still do great things with a cue as he pots a 147-break with no audience there to see it. The star took just under ten minutes to complete the game and ended it with a fist pump. www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1wfV1svGVk

FOCUS: FIRE SAFETY

Extinguishing control panel has configuration options Fike Safety Technology’s Twinflex SRP panel can be used as a standalone solution, or can be interfaced to external fire safety systems through its set of monitored inputs and outputs. The panel offers three configuration options for the programmable zonal inputs. Each of the four input zones can be configured as Conventional Detection, Releasing or with Fike's Twinflex Detection. When configured as Twinflex, the system uses intelligent fire detection devices, which allow multi-function detectors, manual releases, sounders and beacons to be connected on the same 2-wire circuit. This also provides more detailed device and fault type information and can reduce the installation costs compared to conventional detection circuits. Five programmable monitored inputs are provided for connection to devices such as manual extinguishant release call points and switches. A series of monitored outputs are available for conventional sounder circuits and relay and auxiliary control. www.fike.co.uk

Panel for addressable detection over one or two loops Kentec has launched its Syncro XT+ Multi Area Addressable Extinguishing Panel. The Syncro XT+ panel provides addressable detection over one or two loops with 16 Zone LED Indicators and is available with up to four extinguishant release control units built in and is approved to EN12094-1, EN54-2 and EN54-4. Each extinguishant area has a set of inputs and outputs to monitor and control the extinguishing system whether it be gas, aerosol or another and is configurable via a programming interface. All extinguishant areas may have up to seven, serially connected Sigma Si status indication and control units or ancillary relay boards connected via a simple 4-core cable. Being configurable via a programming interface means that the panel can be programmed to meet the clients’ specific requirements. www.kentec.co.uk

Connections Hello again, I am sure you will recall the recent telecom outages by BT at the end of July and the impact it had on your businesses. We certainly do, at the time we hit the social media sites with updates on how it was affecting the Security Industry and ARC/RVRC’s. The telecom outages at the end of July affected network connectivity of radio based stations as such ARC’s were buried in communication failures both on the radio path and on some secondary paths as well. When Radio/PSTN signalling systems experience a mass Radio outage the PSTN receiving infrastructure is put under considerable stress. It is close to impossible to scale the PSTN receiving equipment at network level to cater for 100% connectivity for every device as they attempt to fast poll when the Radio network has failed. However, operating 2 totally independent radio providers, with or without additional optional IP delivery (for 3 way signalling), is infinitely more scalable and reliable for every connection, irrespective of the grade of signalling. Such a solution provides managed connectivity for both independent radio paths, the SIMs and infrastructure are managed end to end in a Dual Radio solution. Whereas with Radio/PSTN solutions, only the Radio element is managed end to end by the ATS provider. Issues with the customer’s PSTN line (locally or at network level) must be managed by the end user. The cost of PSTN line rentals are increasing (whilst it seems the service levels are decreasing) and many customers are turning to VoIP services from providers such as Sky and TalkTalk. Switching to VoIP can mean that some Digi’s or other services work intermittently or not at all. In any case Digi’s are vulnerable to round trip delays due to network related timing issues. A Dual Radio solution can provide installers with all the functionality they need over either path. You don’t have to worry about the many things that can effect a PSTN line such as shared lines, call barring, in bound calls, busy times, line voltages, PABX’s and many more. Both paths are preconfigured and automatically commission to the network. Furthermore the network service provider can deliver confirmed communication failures to the ARC, so no more customers being called in the early hours to be told of single path failures which they, the ARC, or the Installer can do nothing about! So I hear you say, tell me more, who is this supplier that eradicates single path failures? The answer is known to us……….. Contact me on Stevek@southernmonitoring.co.uk Bye for now

FOCUS: FIRE SAFETY

Home safety system with fire, smoke and heat alarms

Water mist system for offices

Honeywell has launched a new connected home safety system, the X-Series, which includes smoke and heat alarms and a wireless module. The X-Series combines a discreet design with a 10-year lifetime and warranty and easy installation to create a residential fire safety solution. The range includes three models: an optical smoke detector; a multi-criteria (optical thermal) detector; and a heat detector. The multi-criteria alarm, XS100T, provides protection by combining two sensors to detect fires, whilst the XH100 heat alarm works best in dusty and steamy environments including kitchens and garages. The XS100 optical alarm provides protection in the main living rooms. X-Series smoke and heat alarms connect wirelessly with other X-Series alarms, including carbon monoxide alarms, to provide an interconnected home safety system with alarms that talk to each other. The alarms have a low-profile shape, concealed LEDs, a large test/reset button and audible alarm. www.homesafety.honeywell.com

Tyco Fire Protection Products has developed a new AquaMist Ultra Low Flow (ULF) fire suppression solution designed to protect offices. AquaMist ULF for offices provides rapid fire suppression for working environments with limited and concealed spaces, including aboveceiling and belowfloor void areas, containing electrical and data cables. The AM-27 and AM-29 closed automatic nozzles and VdS Approved AM-28 and AM-30 nozzles give protection for high coverage areas. The system’s low-pressure discharge and low water consumption help to minimise damage to property and reduce clean-up costs and operational downtime. www.tycoaquamist.com

Interface for helping to keep sites safe Ramtech Electronics has developed an interface that links the WES+ fire alarm with existing safety and security technologies used on site. The WES+ Interface is suited to a range of new build and refurbishment projects and is capable of integrating with most commonly used technologies in existing buildings, construction projects and site cabins. WES+ Interface is suited to extension or refurbishment work in buildings that need to maintain strict access controls and integration with existing building management systems. The interface can be connected to other safety technologies on site so that when the alarm is raised it triggers the other systems. For example, the connection could be set up so that when the alarm is sounded across the WES+ system, the site access is switched to a safe evacuation state. The Interface can also be connected so that the WES+ system alarm can be triggered by an action from a third party system. www.wesfire.co.uk

Two-wire system for simplified fire alarm installation in smaller premises Eaton is aiming to simplify the installation of fire alarm systems in smaller premises with its new two-wire system. The company’s latest fire alarm system, BiWire Ultra enables all detectors, call points and notification devices to share the same zone wiring, reducing cabling requirements reportedly by up to 50 per cent. BiWire Ultra comprises a fire alarm control panel alongside a range of devices including call points, a five-inone fire detector plus a range of EN 5423 approved beacons and sounder beacons. Available in two-, four- or eight-zone variants, the system can support up to 52 devices per zone. Wiring faults are easily found by initiating a flashing LED indicator on the detector nearest the fault. Additional functionality of the system includes a class change facility for schools, which automates the class change bell via the fire alarm, expansion card support for fire alarm routing equipment (FRE) and fire protection equipment (FPE), and an interlink relay for connecting two panels together. www.cooperfire.com

Beware the rush to market This month sees yet more concerns being raised over the security of IoT devices in the home following the discovery of an apparent vulnerability in the current technology t seems that every month we are reporting on new concerns about the use of networked devices in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector. Recent news that security researchers discovered several vulnerabilities in the Osram Lightify range of internet-connected light bulbs should also serves as a warning to those manufacturers and suppliers that offer IoT devices according to two industry experts recently as, if exploited, the vulnerabilities could give attackers access to a home wi-fi network and potentially operate the lights without permission. Commenting on the news Cesare Garlati, chief security strategist, prpl Foundation said: “The security of the Internet of Things is fundamentally broken. Developers and manufacturers understandably are eager to get their new hi-tech devices to market and unfortunately often overlook security, operating under the misapprehension that security-byobscurity in their proprietary systems will do. Though it may not seem like a big deal if a single light bulb is breached in the home – what if a hacker could control every single one of those light bulbs in a specific geographic region and create a power surge which could cause a rolling black out?” Also commenting on the story Reiner Kappenberger, Global Product Manager, HPE Security – Data Security said: “The IoT space has become a hot market where companies need to enter quickly with functionality to be considered leading the space. However with that approach where functionality is the leading indicator comes the risk that security measurements are pushed to the back of the development cycle and frequently then dropped in order to release a product. While some of these are easy to fix the problem can lead to new entrants into the market running out of

business due to security not taking an equal position to features during development. “The current lack of guidance and regulations for IoT device security is one of the bigger problems in this area and why we see breaches in the IoT space rising,” continued Reiner. “Companies rush product to market that have been developed by teams that are solely focusing on functionality. They use protocols and tools that have not been thoroughly vetted from a security standpoint as the small amount of storage in those devices poses limitations to the software elements they can use. Companies entering this space need to think about longer term impact of their devices. Typically computers have a lifespan of a few years. However IoT devices may be around for 10+ years before being replaced – especially in home networks. Companies working in this market need to consider this fact as over the years we have seen a constant flood of vulnerabilities in the tools being used and those systems need to be updated to patch those security flaws. This is a problem not only for the light bulbs here but a broader problem that manifests itself on many IoT devices.” He continues, “Consumers that venture into the IoT space should identify the security measurements that have been taken to secure the device and ask about the long term support for the product. A breach in the IoT device can easily move to other systems – i.e. the home computer – and attackers would then be able to steal valuable personal information such as Back account information and credentials as they are now behind any firewall that the user might have and the whole home network usually is unprotected in home environments. People still take home network security to lightly and should take broader measures to secure themselves. “For those manufacturing devices they should consider approaches like a data centric security approach that helps prevent data leakage and taking over control – such as replaying communications as was the situation with the light bulbs – in order to protect their customers properly,” he concludes.

EDIT Feature VMS sep16_000_PSI_mar15 30/08/2016 17:01 Page 2

VIDEO MANAGEMENT

The value of VMS Video Management Software (VMS) can be the difference between the surveillance system working as the end user expects it to, or not. Here we take a look at the technology and how choosing a VMS can affect the success of an installation

T

alking to some manufacturers you could be led to believe that a good surveillance system is made up primarily of the highest possible resolution camera, with some form of recording/management device/server along the line, however this is not really an accurate description of a complete CCTV install that works for the customer beyond the basics. The VMS is the engine of a surveillance system, it is the visible element that the controller interacts with and also provides the functionality of the hardware – it is much more than just a video playback function. Most of the camera manufacturers provide their own version of VMS even though their cameras will also be compatible with the offerings of specialist VMS providers such as Milestone, Genetec, Mirasys and Avigilon etc. The camera manufacturer software is often supplied free along with the camera allowing the installer to get the system up and running using the dedicated program and enabling the operator to see footage from the cameras from the go. There are benefits (mainly cost) and pitfalls (lack of flexibility and integration of third party systems) of using the freeware that comes with hardware. Free VMS software is however often just an application for delivering recorded video. If you are in a market in which you only need to record from a small number of cameras and you have very limited budget and requirements, then the free options are useable. However when you come to do serious video analytics, deliver real business intelligence or expand the scope of the system in a business critical environment: rolling it out across a retail chain for example or integrating video with access control or intruder systems, installers will see the limitations of the freeware very fast. Indeed if the installation is a relatively small job with only a handful of cameras and no requirement for analytics, and on a low budget, then the free VMS is a viable option, especially as some of the freeware coming out these days is increasingly more feature-rich. Motion detection, for example is a common ‘freebie’ with cameras so if there are acceptable limits to the requirements of your customers then freeware could be a winner all ‘round. After all, specifying bespoke or specialised VMS to a contract will put the price up – but you do get what you pay for.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Yet even though the camera manufacturer does not, on the face of it, make any money from giving away software there is a lot of R&D time and money put into developing operating systems that offer high levels of functionality. This functionality is aimed at taking surveillance cameras into new areas beyond just security. Cynics would point out that often these free VMS systems are only developed to tie customers into using cameras and other hardware from single sources/manufacturers. Which is why specialised VMS systems such as those offered by the likes of Milestone et al can take a security installation on to a whole other level with the ‘open’ nature of the software, allowing the integration of technology from a host of manufacturers, not just the camera company. In fact openness has been a major factor in the growth of integrated security systems over the years, and while there has been a bit of confusion about the open standards (ONVIF, PSIA), the willingness of the specialised VMS developers to offer software development kits etc to other companies has led to a much more flexible operating systems that the original graphical user interfaces (GUIs) of the past and the proprietary offerings from camera companies. An open platform system is ideal because it will not present barriers to developing and upgrading your systems as a business expands or changes direction whichis why VMS companies recognise the benefits of working with third parties. One software package that talks to a range of devices is of more value than having disparate

systems working independently of each other resulting in an installation that cannot develop or give the performance and results that the customer wants. And it’s not just about going forwards either – there is a hefty amount of legacy built into VMS packages so that existing equipment could well be compatible with software that is bang up to date – not something you would normally think of when it comes to software. Don’t think that this is some new development either, back in 2011 Genetec put together a White Paper on the need for an open VMS solution and it still resonates true, stating: “Even today, with all the technologies available, the industry is struggling to fully succeed at building security solutions that fulfil the users’ true needs—a cohesive video and access control system that is efficient, nonproprietary, and cost effective. With the recent advancements in software technologies, and the ongoing discussions between manufacturers, integration has become a popular substitute for traditional interfacing. However, even integration

has its limits. The answer can be found in a single software that manages access control, intrusion and video through non-proprietary security appliances. This next-generation security platform provides unity between video, access and intrusion systems with built-in reporting and alarm management functionalities. It goes above and beyond the basic functionalities of interfacing, integration and even PSIMs, offering end-users an efficient, flexible and cost-effective option to system unification.” As with many installations the key to selecting the correct VMS for the job will be subject to the “what do you want the system to do today, and in the future, and how much do you want to pay for it?” equation as with many contracts. With the continual development of new technologies such as body worn cameras, remote monitoring and increasingly complex video data analytics, VMS selection is just as important as camera selection in getting the desired end result for your customer which, in turn is the desired end result for you.
