EDITORIAL
Selling for success
The economic climate of the Spring-Summer of 2020 has not helped businesses grow but now that the UK is looking like returning to a masked normality it’s time to get the tender paperwork in he business to be in during the period March-August 2020 was either online distribution, food delivery, hand sanitiser supply or swimming pool manufacturing as the UK population ‘enjoyed’ an enforced domestic staycation. Such was the demand, our pool finally arrived mid-August after being on order for months. Recent news (as reported last month) is that as the UK returns to normality, be that one that involves face coverings and hand hygiene, projects that had been put on hold are now being tabled again and funding is becoming available for the most prioritised jobs. This is good news for the economy and for the security installer who may have been looking at a year of remote maintenance and emergency jobs only, however it does now mean that bidding wars may be more common and cutthroat than before for new business. When price is the key issue in a contract the more successful companies are the ones that know how to sell themselves and their services. In an increasingly Cloud-based and remote service industry the security market has ways to keep costs down if the message can be delivered to the client - so any focus on the initial outlay must be offset by the total package on offer. It sounds simple but so often we hear from people that installers don’t always make great salespeople; yes, you know the tech but have you got the patter? Selling on price alone is not going to bring in the contracts, there needs to be more bells and whistles included to set the deal apart from the competition. For example spreading the cost of the outlay is an attractive offer - take that from someone who bought his first sofa on interest-free credit so the garden furniture could actually go in the garden. If I’d had to pay the full price in one go, we’d have been on white plastic seating in the front room for some time. Along the same lines is leasing technology, or as I heard it called recently Hardware as a Service (HaaS) which allows customers to have the system (plus any maintenance deal from the installer on top) straight away and also guarantees income for you. Might be worth putting that option in your next tender as an attractive alternative to a big initial outlay. Selling yourself is not easy and the competition is tough (ask anyone who is going for an interview these days) so be ready to explain the benefits of the system rather than just throwing out numbers and when it comes to numbers, give options. It sounds simple, but if you’ve ever struggled to afford a sofa, you’ll know how alternative payment schemes appeal.

BSIA releases new code of practice for installers
The British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) cybersecurity group has released a new code of practice for installers responsible for safety and security systems. Installation of safety and security systems – cybersecurity code of practice, developed by the BSIA’s Cybersecurity Product Assurance Group (CySPAG), will assist in providing confidence throughout the supply chain promoting secure connection of products and services and delivering client assurance regarding connected solutions. The code of practice will assist the supply chain in its duty of care to other network users, particularly with respect to protecting the integrity of existing cybersecurity countermeasures already in place, or the implementation of such countermeasures in new solutions. Steve Lampett, Technical Manager, BSIA, said: “We have long been concerned with the ever-increasing use of internet connected devices and systems in electronic security and how the growing links to home and business networks can leave individuals and companies vulnerable to cyber- attacks. “It is also significantly important to acknowledge that there is a combined stakeholder effort in providing a cyber secure solution, i.e. manufacturers, designers and installers working in collaboration to provide a credible cyber secure solution. “Our new code of practice for installers takes a practical approach to address cybersecurity risks, takes the sector forward in terms of managing that risk and has the potential to become a real game changer for the industry. This will not be the end goal but

should steer industry practitioners into thinking differently about how we utilise new technology in security and equip the professional security industry for the future.” Glenn Foot, Chairman, CySPAG, said: “Unlike many cybersecurity schemes where the product is the main focus, CySPAG has taken a much broader view of and recognised that not only manufacturers of products, but the installer and client are key links to a cyber secure system. This code of practice ensures professionals with the security industry are taking all reasonable precautions when installing security equipment that has a cyber exposure. “The overall aim is to ensure products are produced and installed securely.” The recommendations of this code of practice apply in addition to other standards and codes of practice relating to systems and equipment to be installed. Any documentation or checklists mentioned in this code of practice may be combined with those required by the other standards or codes of practice, applying to safety and security systems and their components but can be applied to other devices and systems.
at WSS said: “We are delighted to have achieved an enhanced level that is most appropriate to the expectations of current and future clients. The award is testament to the dedication and commitment the whole team shows to providing the highest quality of expertise and professional service in the business.”

QED has announced a partnership to distribute Aiphone’s range of intercom and entry systems. The partnership comes as the distributor recognises that the needs of the security industry are changing and although traditional security products continue to be necessary, the priority has recently shifted. Aiphone’s focus is on reviewing existing products and systems to help keep people and properties safe in the current climate and for the foreseeable future.

In addition to building upon Access-IS’s existing vertical markets, HID will leverage the company’s technology to fuel further expansion, and EMV contactless payment readers from Access-IS will broaden HID’s offering in the financial sector and other markets. Access-IS was founded in 1985 and is based in Reading, UK. With 120 employees serving customers in over 200 countries, Access-IS is now a Business Unit within HID’s Extended Access Technologies’ Business Area, which is led by Steve Currie, Vice President and Managing Director. Robertson has joined Orbis as MD of the Optosafe division and will continue to focus on delivering customer solutions and driving new product development opportunities.
The market has already seen upgrades, new products being introduced or reintroduced and this is why Quality Essential Distribution is exploring new supplier partnerships and widening its product range and is preparing to face how to meet the market demand and for the foreseeable future. Matt Philp, QED’s Product Development Director said of the new Aiphone deal: “This partnership has been driven by the need to add more flexibility with our product range to support our partners working on keeping the general public safe as we must face how different this new world has become. It is a pleasure to work with Aiphone, whose range of products fills a gap in the marketplace”. Harvey Williams, Aiphone’s General Sales Manager said: “We are delighted to have entered into a partnership with Quality Essential Distribution whose values and culture of delivering the highest quality products to customers on time and to the right specification to make their life as easy as possible matches our own.”

THE BOTTOM LINE The interview that gets the facts from the top
I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L
Report calls for retailers to increasingly adopt analytics for benefits A new report is calling for retailers to leverage video analytics more strategically, to control costs, improve operations and increase profitability. Commissioned by the ECR Retail Loss Group and supported by an independent research grant from Genetec, the report offers practical advice for retailers on extracting maximum value from their video surveillance systems. The report, ‘Reviewing the use of video technologies in retail’ is drawn from in-depth interviews and site visits with representatives from 22 retailers based in the US and Europe. The report summarises the ways in which video systems in general, and video analytics in particular, are being deployed across retail businesses, including their use by legal teams for health and safety compliance, and monitoring slip, trip, and fall incidents. It also covers business intelligence applications – such as improving customer service through better staff response times and product availability; generating heat maps and customer dwell times; people counting and queue monitoring; delivery alerts; and improving pick accuracy. Given the need to extract value from across the organisation, a key recommendation of the research is the appointment of a video ‘Tsar’ with overall responsibility for the strategic oversight of video systems deployed across the business. Adrian Beck, Emeritus Professor at the University of Leicester and author of the report commented: “While video technologies have been used in some form or other in retailing for over 40 years, the research found few examples of retailers where its role, purpose, and capability to contribute to business success was clearly articulated. Video analytics is a technology with a broad-ranging and rapidly evolving capability, but what seems clear from this research is the need for explicit leadership, greater application across retail functions, improved integration of video technologies with existing systems, and better alignment of video system design with organisational objectives.”

This month Simon Banks talks to David Scott, Managing Director of Skills for Security, the sector skills body for the private security industry. David joined Skills for Security in August 2019 having previously been part of the senior management team at New College Lanarkshire.
What have been the main focuses in your first year in the role? My main aim has been to raise the quality of our electronic security programme and specifically our delivery of the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) Apprenticeship Trailblazer. In order to deliver high quality training, we recruited 5 full-time tutors. All were fully qualified engineers from the sector. It is important that our apprentices are learning from people who have recent, relevant and extensive experience of the Fire & Security market. Additionally, it’s great to see people giving back to the industry they love! We have a brand new, purpose-built training centre in Warrington with numerous practical working stations and 3 classrooms for theory and hands-on technical classes. We have also added 3 satellite centres to our organisation based in Southport (EFT Systems), Birmingham Met College and one in Oxford coming very soon. We now have over 200 Apprentices on the programme with 16 who qualified over the course of this year.
With the current pandemic focusing on key workers, what are you doing to support training for Security Officers? We have been working with the security sector to create a Professional Security Officer Apprenticeship. For Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland, this should be available this year and we are looking at satellite training centres to deliver this. For England, we are part of the Trailblazer Group, where 40 leading companies have been involved to help develop both Level 2 and degree level apprenticeships, which aims to promote the security sector as a career of choice for those looking for a career in a diverse and robust sector. There are 4 different pathways within this: events, licenses to practice, CCTV operators and door supervisors. The key worker status now held by these roles mean they need the best training possible. We are also helping to upskill existing physical security personnel with CPD qualifications throughout this year.
How has recent lockdown impacted apprenticeships? So far, the impact has been minimal. We expected to see a drop in recruitment during the lockdown, but we have enrolled 50 new apprentices between April and August. Hopefully this is a sign that things will continue as normal. We have 1.4 million young people (1619) leaving school in the UK this year, many who would normally go to College or University but 20% are deferring their place as a result of Covid-19. There is an opportunity here for the fire and security sector to bring these talented young people into an ever growing and diverse environment. With government incentives, a huge talent pool out there and the potential for high-level qualifications, there has never been a better time to be or recruit an apprentice in the Fire & Security industry. Studies show that 20% of economic recovery for a business is based on investments in training and development. That is why the government are backing this so heavily!

he XNV-8081RE is from the Wisenet X range and incorporates a PoE extender capability to simplify cabling infrastructure when installing a second camera within 80 metres of an existing position. The dome is based on a 1/2.8” 5MP CMOS sensor with a stated 0.07 Lux colour sensitivity and IR LED monochrome illumination. The housing has an IP67 environmental rating with IK10 impact resistance for outdoor use.
T
Getting started The camera can be powered from a PoE port and has a typical power requirement of 10.2W however, a major benefit of this camera is that it includes an RJ45 PoE output connector that is used to feed an additional camera. This PoE output port can supply up to 12.95W to the extension camera with a cable length of up to 80 metres. For this, the main camera must be supplied from a PoE+ port (IEEE802.3at, Class 4) with a 25.5W capability. A weather cap is provided for additional protection if required, when wall mounted, this helps protect the dome from rain and provides some sun shielding. The dome camera is supplied disassembled with the electronic module boxed separately from the housing. This allows the module to be easily workshop configured prior to visiting site.
Hanwha Techwin Wisenet XNV-8081RE
Installation is a straightforward matter with a mounting plate being secured to the ceiling or wall first, and then the camera casing is attached to this. A side aperture is available for conduit feed if required. The cables are fed through the grommets in the casing base with a cap installer to fit over the RJ45 connector to help ease it through. Additional single and dual entry grommets are provided. Once the housing is in place and the relevant cables fed through, the dome module is fitted and held in place by a strong magnet in the camera module’s base that attaches to a steel plate in the aluminium housing. Three domed lugs ensure firm positioning. A “Pull” loop is in place to ease removal, this makes it very easy to remove the module for removal or insertion of storage devices. The dome cover is then held in place by four captive Torx screws. A seven-way connector is used for the alarm in/out and Audio in / out feeds and a 2-pole connector is provided for connecting the analogue video output into a test monitor. If a second camera is connected, it is just fed from the PoE output port and no additional configuration of the main camera is required as the port is enabled by default. Standard RJ45 LED indication is provided on the output port so you can confirm connection and status and that data is flowing.

Operation
A very installer friendly ONVIF compliant external dome camera with ease of set-up and an ability to simplify network cabling when retrofitting for additional cameras 14
Once powered up, the camera is initially DHCP enabled so will be given an IP address by your local router or will have a fixed address of 192.168.1.100. Hanwha’s IP Installer program can be used to find cameras on the local subnet and change IP addresses. Once the IP address is known, this can be used to call up the camera via a browser. At first connection a “strong” password must be entered before continuing. The initial live screen has options at the top to switch between Live view, Playback (of SD card or NAS) and Setup. Lower icons provide PTZ, Capture, Record, Pixel Count, File Type (AVI or ZIP), Alarm Output, Speaker, Microphone, Audio Play & Stop, Profile Information, Aspect Ratio, Video setup and Full Screen display. A straightforward Setup menu system allows configuration changes to be made, as usual it is important to remember to “Apply” the changes for many of the settings as it is sometimes necessary to scroll down to see the apply and cancel buttons. An operating temperature range of -50°C to +60°C is given as long as the start-up temperature is above -35°C. In addition to the bi-directional audio channels, the camera can store and replay up to five messages, stored as WAV files with a total size of 3MB. These can be activated from the Browser or video management system, event triggered or scheduled to suit. Dual micro SD card slots are provided for local edge storage. These can be up to 512GB each for a total of 1TB edge storage.
Performance At maximum resolution the image is in 4:3 aspect ratio due to the 2616 (H) x 1976 (V) 5MP sensor format but a 2560 x 1440 option is available from a
very wide range of options down to 320 x 240. The Digital PTZ function if enabled, limits the camera to its maximum resolution in either 50 or 60Hz. The camera has a good dynamic range of 120dB. Up to 32 Privacy zones can be placed on the image with solid or mosaic effect (global) and up to 6 colour options per zone. The 2.4x lens has a zoom range of 3.9 to 9.4mm and is a motorised varifocal. Horizontal viewing angle is from 92.1° (Wide) to 38.7° (Tele) with vertical angle from 67.2° to 29.0°. A mini joystick switch on the camera module chassis allows zoom and focus to be adjusted at the camera location if monitoring the video output. Browser lens control can be used with precise coarse and fine or a “Simple focus” selection capability once the lens has been initialised. The Simple focus adjustment can be seen to stop down the lens for minimal depth of field during the adjustment phase. Zoom has similar coarse and fine step adjustments. The 5MP sensor provides excellent image detail and low light sensitivity is very good, supported for zero light levels in monochrome by 4 LED infrared illuminators mounted just below the lens. These have a range of up to 50 metres. A light sensor and configurable delay timing are used to ensure there is no “hunting” as level thresholds are reached. A good range of detection capabilities are included including Shock, Motion, Tampering, Defocus, Fog and Audio that all have a clear graph display for sensitivity and level setting. Audio can also be classified for detection of a Scream, Gunshot, Explosion and Crashing Glass. IVA settings include Virtual line and Virtual area with suitable direction, subject size, and timing configuration. Face detection is included and can be set for a specific area of the scene and subject size. All detection modes are straightforward to set up and all browser accessed features are supported by good context sensitive Help files.
Conclusion A very installer friendly ONVIF compliant external dome camera with ease of set-up and an ability to simplify network cabling when retrofitting for additional cameras, installing two cameras to a single location or when needing to install an adjacent PoE device such as lighting or PIR detection.

Enhanced remote access control for smart locks Codelocks WiFi Gateway allows a user to control up to four compatible Codelocks Smart Locks from any WiFi connected mobile device. WiFi Gateway by Codelocks works in conjunction with the K3 Connect App. Remote smart access control features include locking and unlocking, programming, client management, NetCode generation and more. Until the arrival of the WiFi Gateway, users would need to control Codelocks Smart Locks individually using the K3 App on a Bluetooth enabled device. The device would therefore need to be within range of each individual lock while performing app functions. WiFi Gateway by Codelocks offers a more convenient way to manage small numbers of smart locks by connecting to them over a WiFi network. codelocks.co.uk/wifi-gateway

INTERVIEW
Want more intruder business? “It's all about how you present the proposed system and taking the time to highlight the crime figures, letting people know what risks they are taking and providing them with peace of mind and comfort at home
Do you want to increase your presence in the domestic alarm market? You need to highlight the positives of intruder security says Nick Quigley of HKC he intruder detection alarm system is one of the staple products of the security industry, yet it is not adopted as widely in the domestic market as you might think. We caught up with Nick Quigley, Commercial Director of HKC, to discuss the current state of play in the UK and to find out what installers can do to tap into the domestic market.
T
How has 2020 been for you so far? We were doing really well up until April when the World fell apart! We were working hard at the time on some new products that we wanted to bring to the market and thankfully the R&D team has continued to work, albeit remotely, and we are now seeing those products

beginning to launch. For example, we announced our miniature contact last month and we're looking forward to launching our new proximity touch keypad in August in the UK. Looking at the numbers for July, we appear to be back to normal and the figures for August look good too. Plenty of people are asking how long this situation is going to last and if we are seeing a pull through from April or May or actually seeing a real recovery that's going to stick with us. I'm hoping it's the latter because it's been a tough couple of months in Ireland and the UK.
Nick Quigley of HKC talking to PSI in August 2020
There are some well-established names in the UK intruder market so how is HKC going to fit in? You're right, there is some tough competition for us and recently we have seen some disruptors coming into the market, which I think is going to affect the overall intrusion market, not just in the UK. Our focus has been very much playing in the professional installer market and presenting > 19

them with a solution that is the full toolkit covering all of the elements from fitting the system, training and tech support backup. In addition, our Cloud service gives installers the ability to do full upload/download and allows them to build recurring revenues. So, I’d say we fit into the busy market by targeting only the professional trade and not having product availability online. It’s going solely through traditional distribution routes with a product that boasts ease of connectivity and set-up, either at the customer site or back at the office using the Cloud. Does the use of security systems differ in the UK compared to Ireland? There are some differences but not many. The panels that we started off making in Ireland, the SW-10270 and the Quantum 70, are marketed and sold in the UK and have been well accepted. What we do see that is a little bit different, although it is starting to change in the UK, is that in Ireland there is more of an emphasis on external perimeter inertia sensors for residential security. That focus is not really evident anywhere else but it is beginning to gain a foothold in the UK where we would see a typical "European/US" approach with internal motion sensors and front and back door contacts being the norm; whereas in Ireland, we would have a system that will be much more perimeter inertia based. We do try to get across to our installers in both Ireland and the UK that customers are better off keeping the burglars out rather than knowing when they're in!
“If you look at the penetration of systems in the UK and Ireland we probably have the highest penetration of alarm systems anywhere in the world”
20
In light of this we will probably look into more external perimeter based systems in the next product roadmap (we're currently approaching the end of the current campaign) either with point to point or motion sensors. It's been estimated that nearly 75 percent of UK houses don't have an intruder system. Why do you think that so few people have an alarm? I would flip that statistic on its head because if you look at the penetration of systems in the UK and Ireland we probably have the highest penetration of alarm systems anywhere in the world. If you consider the US or Mainland Europe, the penetration is significantly less with some of the research figures I've seen for the US are around the twenty percent penetration mark. We're looking at 30-35% in Ireland and the UK so I think we're on the plus side of the equation rather than highlighting those that don't have a system. I think when you look more closely at the percentage there are lots of people, for example those living in an apartment six or seven storeys up, that will tend not to worry about security as much as someone who has a ground floor front and back door with a driveway up to the house. How do you think the installers can tap into that market to raise the numbers? It's all about how you present the proposed system and taking the time to highlight the crime figures, letting people know what risks they are taking and providing them with peace of mind and comfort at home. Along the lines of what I mentioned earlier, talk about the proactive benefits of knowing someone is outside and trying to get in more than having a reactive system that springs to life once they are

inside. What is most valuable to your customer is their family so it is important for installers to get that message across and make sure that when they come to putting out marketing material for domestic installs to focus on the crime rates and protecting what’s most important, the family. CCTV has developed rapidly in the last 20 years, but what has been the big intruder innovation in that time? I've been in the industry a long time and for most of that it didn't really change but I would say the single biggest thing for me has been the migration to IP communications and with it, the innovation of apps and Cloud. I've seen phenomenal change in how our industry grows and it gives installers a good tool to sell a system to a potential owner in showing them features and functionality via an app whereas in the past the choice was either a key switch or a keypad. So, it was very hard to have a product that was appealing to the end user. I even find when people see me out using the HKC app that they say they didn't know that kind of thing was possible. I think the migration from analogue to IP has been the single biggest change in my lifetime and it makes the intruder product a little bit sexier and an easier sell as smartphones lend themselves really well to intruder technology. Some technologies have an app yet you wonder why you would need an app for that particular product, but with an intruder system it really does add benefits. We've got over 100,000 subscribers on our app now, which is quite phenomenal. In a previous life, I was running Ireland's biggest intruder monitoring and installation company and it took me from 1990 to 2009 to get to
www.psimagazine.co.uk
90,000 professionally monitored accounts. At HKC, our app numbers have gone from zero to 100,000 in less than five years. This bodes well because the next generation of homeowners are going to be very tech savvy and favour the use of smartphones and apps plus it allows them to self-monitor which will appeal to that age group; the older you get the more you want a professionally monitored service with police response. It's no doubt that technology has made life a lot easier for the alarm installer trying to sell the product and in addition, on the back-end of the app, we've bolted on the ability for installers to manage and grow recurring revenue without needing a separate system. What is going to be the next trend in the security industry? It's going to be really interesting to see what happens following the recent news that ADT is partnering with Google and how much more similar convergence we will see in the market particularly with big players like Google and Amazon looking at our industry. I think this shows that we are working in a viable, vibrant industry. I expect to see more deals like this in the future and we'll see more connectivity around the home particularly as technologies become more intelligent. And in that space we're also going to see further convergence between CCTV and intruder with new features such as GPS coming into play as the technology continues to evolve.

BUSINESS
How to generate more leads In the latest in the series of articles on growing your service business, Jim Rathbone looks at how to generate more leads and increase new business service sales
Set targets for service sales for all outdoor salespeople, ensure the commission scheme rewards sufficiently the sale of service contracts and measure service sales by salesperson
Let us consider three key ways of generating leads and increasing service sales: Ensure the foundations are in place for generating more new service business a. It is vital to develop a service business mindset when the installation activity can be so time consuming, otherwise the focus and persistence is likely to diminish in trying new approaches. b. Test and measure new lead generation methods, so you have the data to decide which to continue, what to stop and what to refine. c. Review your service offerings to see if they need to be refined to meet the market needs, especially in this COVID 19 environment. d. Clearly communicate the benefits of investing in a service contract. e. Clearly articulate why customers should buy from your company and what makes you different from the competition. Give evidence for your service claims using service KPIs, testimonials and case studies. f. Communicate your service offering and capabilities in your sales proposal, website and brochures. Test online marketing for generating more service leads It is a small minority of installers who have developed proven methods in generating significant leads and sales from online marketing. There are rewards for those who do this well. Test Google AdWords as businesses and organisations are searching online for support on
24
the technology vendor products you have expertise in. They are looking for maintenance, upgrade advice and assistance on their existing systems. They may be disappointed with the support they are getting from their current provider. If you can attract them to your website by effective use of keywords and a relevant dedicated landing page to their search term , you open up the opportunity to resolve their current problems, take over their maintenance contract and sell a contract if one is not in place. This can then lead to new sales opportunities such as system extension, system upgrade, new sites, and referrals etc. Use email marketing to share developments in new technology, provide informative content on safeguarding people, property and assets and showcase your expertise through case studies. Develop your capabilities in using social media such as LinkedIn as a lead generation tool. You may wish to trial Navigator to reach your target leads and prospects. Increase service sales focus Investing in an indoor service salesperson to sell maintenance contracts and service/ small works has proven a very effective way of increasing sales and margins for many of our clients. This dedicated role should ensure that leads receive a quote within 24 hours and there is timely followup by email or phone. New service lead generation methods can be more easily tested and measured. The role should also provide feedback to the engineers on the outcome of the leads that they have provided and regular tips on ways to improve system performance. Set targets for service sales for all outdoor salespeople, ensure the commission scheme rewards sufficiently the sale of service contracts and measure service sales by salesperson. Develop key account customers for cross selling other disciplines, taking over new sites and introducing new service offerings. Developing new methods for generating leads and new business is vital in growing the service business. This involves ensuring the foundations are in place for accelerating service growth, testing online marketing for generating more service leads and increasing service sales focus in the sales team. Selling security after C19
SECURITY
Coming out of lockdown people are still concerned about cash flow so could leasing help you get more projects signed off?
t is an impossible job to predict what is going to happen over the next few months as the lockdown continues to ease (at time of press) and the final stages of Brexit approach, so you can understand why some customers are unsure about signing off on new projects. We spoke to Kevin Spinks, Managing Director at Bft Automation, to discuss the current state of play and to find out more about how leasing technology offers installers a different route to gaining business.
I
What will be the impact of lockdown? If you listen to the news, all we hear about is more and more layoffs: I think the last figures I heard were almost three quarters of a million since March. The unemployment rate might well top two million, that's 6% of the workforce before the end of the year and obviously it could go further. I hold the view that as unemployment goes up, so does crime with young people getting increasingly frustrated and others turning to crime to help pay the bills. So we are in a really difficult situation and as a result I expect the number of security projects to increase as unemployment levels rise both in the domestic space as well as across the commercial landscape. From our perspective we had a record sales month in July and I recognise that a lot of that was pent-up demand from during lockdown, I still think that there are many security projects coming about because people are expecting and planning to protect themselves against an increase in crime. People do have a fear of going back to the office environment and this will see companies investing in touchless technology such as facial recognition and temperature control and sensing systems to make workers feel safer, thus bringing new opportunities to the security industry.
businesses saw a dramatic reduction in their revenue stream with many moving from a profit into a loss-making situation. So, although at the start of the year many businesses had planned and made provision for a range of capital investments for a variety of projects, including security, many of these may now be cancelled as the companies try to reduce expenses to recover their profitability. This is where leasing with the ability to spread costs over the lifetime of a project really comes into its own. It is much easier in today's climate to find for example £340 a month rather than to write out a cheque for £15,000. The project will invariably last for several years, so why pay for it all up front when you can spread the cost and help the P&L this year? To illustrate how this benefits all parties, we were partnering last year with an installer working at a school which had some land that was being used for parking by people attending nearby shops. The school had been thinking about getting a car parking system installed to control the area and raise some money, but believed they could never manage to close their budget with the project funded. Last year was again going to be another year when they didn't have the parking system installed, however the installer suggested leasing and
Kevin Spinks of Bft Automation

Why is leasing or "hardware as a service" a viable option at the moment? There are some companies that did very well in lockdown particularly the big internet resellers and the delivery companies, but the majority of

within a few meetings the school signed up and the project went ahead. So there you have a project that was never really going to happen being enabled because the installer showed the customer a way to spread the cost of the project over several years. Which sectors and technologies lend themselves particularly well to leasing? To be honest I think all security projects are viable. I think there is a common misconception that says you can only really lease something that's a hundred percent a recoverable asset, so that in the event of a default in payment the finance company is able to secure the asset and get some value back from the deal, but that really isn't the case. If you consider car leasing, which is something we are familiar with, some cars are sold under a lease with maintenance so you are not just funding the car itself, you are also funding the maintenance of the car. That's a big portion of the cost of what's being funded. So I think any project can be funded with leasing. What is perhaps most interesting from our perspective is where customers are looking to fund things like parking systems because with a parking system, you're selling a revenue generating device. We have actually worked with installers who have managed to put forward a proposal for a parking system under a lease where the customer clears a profit from Month One because of the income generated by the parking system. Has the lockdown affected product supply? No, I think that following the Brexit debacle all manufacturers of technology like security products increased their stock holding. We certainly ramped up on our product supply and still have an excess due to those plans and preparations. The problem is, however, nobody can predict the future now. I don't think anybody has got any idea what's going to happen in relation to the trade war between China and the US and even on a much smaller scale, it only takes one component or sub-assembly supplier to go under to impact the production of a
“What is perhaps most interesting from our perspective is where customers are looking to fund things like parking systems because you're selling a revenue generating device 28
particular system. Unfortunately I don't think anybody can say we will never have a problem, but I think we can all mitigate against the potential problems that might exist and I think the next challenge is going to happen at the turn of the year when we finally exit from Europe, but planning for worst case scenarios will prevent disaster. Do you have any advice for installers returning to work? That's a tough question, but I think that going forward there's going to be sufficient work around to enable installers to pick and choose what I refer to as the right kind of customer - the ones who they can work well with, rather than those when you regret taking the business. The second thing I'd say is the focus on payment. I don't think letting people run accounts for 90 or 120 days is acceptable and in this scenario leasing may well be an advantage. The leasing company that some of our installers work with get paid in three days of completing the job so they actually get paid before they have to pay their suppliers, something that is almost unheard of! As there is going to be a lot more competition in the future with more people chasing the same kinds of business I would advise that installers upgrade their selling skills rather than just quote for a job and try to really understand what the driving force is behind the job and show the customer as much value as possible. Again, one of those elements of value-add is showing customers an alternative way to fund the projects just to make the offer different from those simply quoting a price. How do you think we're going to look back on this period? Hopefully we'll look back at this time having been vaccinated and having lost the masks that we wear today! The problem is that nobody can predict with any surety what the environment is going to be like in 2021 as there are so many factors that can create either a really positive or negative environment. If I were a betting man though, having entered a recession and recognising that unemployment is likely to go up in the next twelve months I expect crime will increase and I think the number of security projects in the marketplace will also increase and on that basis, I'm looking forward quite positively at the next twelve months, as are many of my customers.

INSIDE STORY - SMART R
Easily extending PoE transmission video surveillance division of Smart R Distribution, to explain more about the benefits of the company’s PoE Ethernet extenders and what they are able to do:
As the amount of data being captured by cameras is on the rise with higher resolution technology coming to the market, the requirement to transmit the information over longer distances without causing bandwidth problems needs addressing. Here we look at a simple solution In brief • The PoE Ethernet extenders support the transmission of video data over up to 1,000 metres. • Up to 200Mbps physical bandwidth • Support for PoE up to 500m • Support for Power over Cabling (PoC) technology • Equipped with communication channel dynamic adjustment and error correction coding technology
arlier this year, we revealed how the scope of the video surveillance system at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton had, as a consequence of COVID-19, needed to be expanded to cover some new buildings which had quickly been erected to increase the capacity of sensitive areas. The challenge for Derby-based JKE Security, the systems integrator who were tasked to install a new 4K camera, was how to do so in a location over 300 metres from the hospital’s control room, without the cost and disruption of laying the network cabling needed to transmit the images captured by higher resolution IP cameras. We were able to report technology had come to the rescue in the form of Smart R 602POE-2P PoE Ethernet extender, the use of which meant that the 4K images could be transmitted to a control room over the hospital’s existing coaxial cabling. Often, case studies of video surveillance installations tend to focus on the technology packed into the cameras. On this occasion, the success of the project was down to a behind the scenes piece of kit which negated the need to dig up a road to run a new cable from camera’s location and the control room. PSI decided to take a closer look at the device which saved the day and we asked Simon Shawley, Business Development Manager for the

Installers who search the Internet will find there is no shortage of manufacturers offering PoE Ethernet extenders, but to avoid any hassle it makes sense to utilise a device which has been designed to cope with the specific demands of a video surveillance system 30
What is different about the PoE extenders? Installers who search the Internet will find there is no shortage of manufacturers offering PoE Ethernet extenders, but to avoid any hassle it makes sense to utilise a device which has been designed to cope with the specific demands of a video surveillance system. In this respect, the single port 602POE-2P deployed at the hospital and our four port 601POE PoE, which facilitates the transmission of video data captured by up to four cameras, have been developed in direct response from customers who wanted a true plug and play solution which could cope with high speed transmission of images captured by bandwidth hungry IP cameras. By offering PoE support, these devices offer the added bonus of the connected cameras being powered via the two-wire cabling, negating the need to install power points at each camera location. What cabling is required for the technology to work? The 602POE-2P and 601POE will support the transmission of data over virtually any two-wire cabling, including Cat5, coax, telephone lines and power lines. Each has master and slave units which are connected to either end of the cabling. Why would a project need extenders? Adding little to the total cost of a video surveillance system, PoE Ethernet extenders are primarily intended to help bridge the gap when your customers are looking to expand an existing system or migrate from an existing analogue CCTV system and take advantage of the benefits offered by IP cameras. In many situations, they can simply be a problem solver. A requirement to upgrade cameras in lifts as a good example of this, with existing two-wire cabling connected to the PoE Ethernet extenders being sufficient to support new higher definition IP cameras installed in place of older generation analogue CCTV cameras. To be honest, these simple, easy to install and commission devices are perhaps unsung heroes within our industry and yet their ability to contribute to the effectiveness of a video surveillance system and other applications, should not be underestimated.

Wearing a mask is part of the protection against the spread of COVID-19 and has been adopted as a precautionary measure in many workplaces. Individuals not following company policy can be detected using video analytics onboard the Wisenet X Series cameras.
DLVA provides a far more accurate approach to filtering out false alarms than motion detection and traditional video analytics. Instead of simply looking for changes in pixel values, DLVA utilises multi-layer, neural network algorithms to effectively learn the object's profile. It then uses a combination of pixel values, edges, vector shapes and a host of other visual elements to recognise the object as a person, vehicle or animal.

REVIEWS
CCTV – TRIED & TESTED An overview of some of the products we have featured in PSI independent test reports. This month we highlight recent CCTV reviews; products are listed in no particular order. As always, manufacturers and distributors have no input in the test reports or results Bosch – Flexidome NDE-3503-AL
Part of the Bosch Flexidome IP 3000i IR range, this fixed dome camera is impact resistant to IK10 with IP66 protection rating and has a 1/2.9” 5MP CMOS sensor, 3.2 to 10mm motorised lens and a range of “Essential” video analytic functions. It has a diameter of 137mm and height of 122.5mm. It has an operating temperature of 30°C to +50°C. Review: A very capable dome camera with a wide range of configuration options.
IDIS – DC-Y3C14WRX This is a 360° dome IP camera with built-in infrared illumination. It supports two-way audio, alarm input and outputs and a range of viewing modes. Review: This is a well-built 360° camera with some very flexible display modes. For maximum benefit it would ideally be used with an IDIS NVR or front end but works well with the supplied software or Web viewer.
Concept Pro – CP-HSD20-AHD This Concept Pro IP66 IK10 rated speed-dome is based on the Starvis 1/2.8” CMOS sensor, giving a 2MP (1920 x 1080p) image with a 20x zoom lens and in-built infrared illuminators with a stated range of up to 150 metres. A 30x zoom version is also available. The camera provides outputs for all the main analogue HD formats such as AHD, CVI, TVI along with the digital over coax SDI standard. Review: An interesting highly sensitive HD speed dome that gives a potentially easy route to changing from analogue HD to IP based viewing and control, compatible with all key analogue HD systems. Some of the camera’s core configuration options are not currently accessible via the browser but possibly may be included in a future firmware version.
Optio - OPA4ED28V12IRG
The OPA4ED28V12IRG camera is an IP67 rated, 4 Megapixel (2560H x 1440V) Eyeball style analogue camera with a varifocal 2.7mm to 12mm lens. It consists of an aluminium body and mount available in a dark grey or white finish. Optio products form a subset of the Vista range. Review: Working with all of the key analogue HD formats and providing up to 4MP resolution this camera is relatively simple to install and set up. When combined with a compatible recorder, this camera allows simple and cost-effective upgrades for legacy analogue systems using coaxial cabling. 44

SMOKE DETECTION
Hikvision – DS-2CD4A26FWD This camera is a high-end outdoor bullet camera identified as part of Hikvision’s DarkFighter range. The camera offers very high sensitivity and 1920 x 1080p HD performance with pre-installed firmware to provide video analytic functions. These can be selected from options including Audio Exception, Defocus, Scene Change, Face, Line Crossing, Intrusion, Region Entrance, Region Exiting, Unattended Baggage and Object Removal Detection. Review: The wide range of detection methods mean that this camera can fulfil the majority of current security video tasks. Its builtin Infrared illuminator range and high sensitivity provide very good image quality even in challenging conditions.
Tyco – Illustra Flex IFS02P6INWIT This Indoor HD PTZ dome is from the Illustra Flex range and has a 30 times optical and 12 times digital zoom range with IR illumination up to 25 metres. An external variant has IR support to 150 metres. Review: A very well constructed PTZ camera unit with straightforward connection and configuration. Some minor issues encountered with setup functions and lens performance but overall, good image quality and extended zoom range.
Hanwha Techwin – Wisenet PNM-9320VQP The Wisenet PNM-9320VQP is a relatively large assembly that can house up to 4 fixed camera modules for wide area coverage and with a PTZ camera beneath fitted with a 32x zoom lens of 4.44mm to 142.6mm. The wide range of fixed camera modules means that the camera can cover a full 360° field of view or 4 specific narrower views to suit the surveillance requirement. Review: An interesting device to provide wide area surveillance with PTZ support for close-up or automated tracking of subjects. The single network connection means that an existing network camera can be upgraded to a multiview capability without the need for additional network hardware.
Dahua - DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 The DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 is promoted as a 2MP Starlight IR Dual PTZ external network camera. It is from the Dahua WizMind range and is based on 2 x 1/2.8” CMOS sensors, one with a wide angle view and one with a 25x optical zoom lens. “Deep Learning algorithms” are used to support detection functions such as smart tracking of vehicles or humans with automatic filtering of false alarms. . Review: An interesting ONVIF compliant dome with high sensitivity and capable of tracking subjects while still maintaining an overview of the scene of interest. Good differentiation of targets to track humans and/or vehicles while preventing false alarms.
Uniview - IPC2325EBR5-DUPZ Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°. Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this.

together raising standards
Meet the installer What would be a typical project for you? As a sub-contractor on a new build site we would normally be responsible for installing the access control, door entry, fire and CCTV systems. In this respect, we have extensive experience of working closely with construction companies, consulting engineers and M&E contractors and we have established a reputation for a ‘no problem’ approach to the logistical and time demands of working in new build environments. Do you have any 'go to' technology? Most of our projects involve a tender process and the systems to be installed have been prespecified. When we do have the opportunity to work directly with an end-user, we always take into account the client’s operational requirements before offering objective advice on the best combination of products to meet their specific needs. As you would expect from an independent system, we are ‘device agnostic’ when it comes to recommending products. We are nevertheless pleased to be approved installers for BPT door entry, BFT and FAAC gate solutions, Honeywell Gent fire systems and for the Genetec Security Centre software platform which we put to good use when we are involved in large scale integrated security projects. What is the best thing about working in security? Working with like-minded people who share my passion for creating safe space. In addition to all the highly professional people within the supply chain who I interact with, I am extremely proud of the 50 plus strong team we have built at WLS. Every member of the team appreciates the key to

Security life with Jeremy Ewen of WLS in South East London
Name: Jeremy Ewen Job title: Managing Director Time in security/fire: 40+ years Company: WLS Location: South East London Areas of expertise: Fire, CCTV, access control, gates, barriers and bollards Accreditations: NSI Gold approved, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, BAFE, Safe Contractor
success is to offer our clients the highest possible levels of pre and post-sales support and I get great satisfaction from customers regularly telling me that it’s our people which sets us apart from our competitors. Is third party accreditation beneficial? Yes. We are NSI Gold approved for Fire & Security, which opens doors, excuse the pun! We are also accredited by various organisations relating to the construction industry. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Recruiting top-flight gate automation engineers has proved to be difficult. Otherwise, I feel currently we have the best team we have ever had. I have a policy of only recruiting engineers and technicians of the highest calibre and I also put maximum effort into creating a motivating and rewarding environment for them to work within. This result has been that I have rarely had to replace anyone.

together raising standards (continued from previous page)
“I am confident that as a team we can cope with virtually anything the world can throw at us”
Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Over the last 37 years, I think I have had to deal with every potential problem which could delay or hinder the successful completion of a project and I am confident therefore that as a team we can cope with virtually anything the world can throw at us. COVID-19 is a very good example of this. However, it still remains a challenge for us when a number of projects are close to being completed at the same time and different customers expect our engineers to be on site on the same day. What is the industry’s biggest myth? That home automation is an easy extension to a security company’s portfolio. It isn’t. What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? Very little. It is very much a case of ‘horses for courses’ and we leave home automation to the home automation experts. What would make your job easier? Having an all-embracing piece of software to run every function of the business.
What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? A 50,000 volt, live, electric fence linked to a facial recognition system. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? Go and learn the industry at someone else’s expense! Apart from that tongue in cheek advice, I would recommend they should definitely look to progress a career within the electronic security industry. Like those involved with births and deaths, we will always be necessary as there is no sign that the criminal fraternity is planning to retire within the near future. It is also a very exciting time for our industry with advances in technology allowing us to help customers achieve much more from their security systems. Will England ever win the football World Cup again? Yes, definitely. If only I knew when! If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? Buy a classic motorbike.

Open Door IDIS Center VMS boasts new features and functions
IDIS has further enhanced its IDIS Center VMS, adding new features and functions targeted at small to mid-sized enterprises, and multi-site customers.
Organisations can build powerful centralised monitoring solutions, quickly and easily, when implementing IDIS Center together with the wide selection of IDIS DirectIP® cameras and powerful NVRs. These deliver customer lifecycle savings of 50% or more compared with server-based solutions, thanks to reduced installation time, no upfront or ongoing license fees, easier maintenance and the industry-beating IDIS Ultimate Warranty. Important new features now included with the cost-free, license-free IDIS Center VMS include MapVue, an easy-to-use search function that speeds up operator navigation across building layouts and floor plans. Its intuitive interface helps users to play back video streams across multi-camera systems, while maintaining an overview perspective of their facilities’ layouts and camera positions. MapVue also provides easy bookmarking, allowing operators to search the recorded data for persons and activity of interest. Bookmarked footage can then be saved in an Excel file, creating a library of video clips. IDIS Center users can also now benefit from IDIS Instant Meta Filtering (IMF) capabilities without any licensing or maintenance fees when using the new range of IDIS 6000 Series Edge VA (EVA) cameras. IMF speeds up incident investigations from days or hours to mere minutes. It allows operators to easily collate footage and scan hours of recorded video, from multiple streams, to pinpoint the movements and last-known locations of persons or vehicles of interest. Licence simplification for Integriti system
Inner Range has announced a major simplification of the licensing model for its intelligent access control and intruder detection system Integriti. Partners and customers will be able to choose from four clearly defined software options that include sets of features, rather than needing licences for each feature individually. The new structure will have a dramatic effect on the way Integriti systems are designed and quoted, cutting down on the complexities and time needed as well as being cost neutral. The four software options are: Express – For basic administration of sites with a single controller. Professional – Extends management abilities to multiple controllers and multiple sites. It’s the first software edition that allows expansion and integrations to be added. Business – For businesses who use Integriti in their daily routines including using extensive reporting capabilities. This is the first edition that includes CCTV integration. Corporate – Fully featured enterprise-grade software that unlocks Integriti’s full potential. It accommodates large scale sites and includes features for on-site guards and monitoring. Tim Northwood, general manager of Inner Range, said: “Integriti’s strength is that it can provide highly sophisticated and holistic security management systems. But sometimes these have been complicated to achieve. Our new licensing model offers four clear and transparent options for partners and customers that are much easier to understand and explain, as well as being cost neutral. We hope our simplified structure will make Integriti’s power and sophistication much easier to access.” Visit: www.innerrange.co.uk 50

Making data visible and usable with Intelligent Insights
Using data to improve security, safety, and business decisions has become increasingly important to the market and continues to grow. Now, Bosch has introduced an affordable software solution called ‘Intelligent Insights’ that enables customers to use data in new ways. It completes the data journey from scene to screen and helps users quickly understand the context of various situations, enabling them to make informed decisions. When, for example, the maximum number of people allowed to be in the area is reached, Intelligent Insights can immediately inform users. This is very helpful when considering public health issues like the rapid spread of viruses such as COVID-19. Intelligent Insights can be used standalone or seamlessly integrated with other systems to enhance situational awareness further. Visit: www.boschsecurity.com/gb/en/

Cameras reduce fire risk
ADJ Fire and Security has utilised Hikvision thermometric cameras to reduce fire risk at the Recycling Lives waste management facility ecycling Lives is a recycling and waste management operation that supports and sustains charity programmes for offender rehabilitation, residential support and food redistribution. Charity and social enterprise teams provide residential accommodation for the homeless, help to reduce reoffending and redistribute food, directly supported by recycling, recruitment, compliance and waste management businesses. At the Recycling Lives site in Preston, ADJ Fire and Security was asked to help devise a solution which could help staff prevent and detect fires onsite during and out of office hours. “These fires can happen within waste piles on site, and can end up burning inside without any notification,” says Andy Moore, managing director of ADJ. “They can seriously flare up when the pile is disturbed. There are batteries stored on site from depolluted cars and these can also be a serious fire hazard if ignited.”

Hikvision Gold VASP partner ADJ, Hikvision and Recycling Lives collaborated on the development of the system for Recycling Lives’ requirements. ADJ recommended the use of Hikvision’s Thermometric thermal bullet cameras, specifically the DS-2TD2136T-15 model. These cameras are designed to detect changes in temperature using thermal imaging technology. The camera uses image processing technology, including Adaptive Automatic Gain Control, Digital Detail Enhancement, 3D Dynamic Noise Reduction, and a Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference of less than 40mk. “Recycling Lives recently had a visit from the Environmental Agency as part of a routine inspection. The EA were impressed with the standard of risk management and controls on the site, including the recent investment in fire detection technology” enables automatic smart detection including Line Crossing, Intrusion, and Region Entrance and Exit, and it also provides a temperature exception alarm function and fire detection algorithm. Temperature measurement range is 20°C to 550°C with a reported ±2°C accuracy. The thermal imaging module provides 384 x 288 resolution and supports contrast adjustment and shutter adjustment in various modes. There are 15 palettes of adjustable colour available, and because this is a thermal imaging camera rather than a conventional CCTV device, there’s no need for additional lighting. Nineteen thermometric cameras were installed initially at the Preston site, with more set to be added in future. “Cameras are located in the high-risk areas where fires could break out such as the plant rooms and stockpiles, shredder, and depollution areas,” says Andy Moore. “When the cameras detect an increase in temperature that signifies a potential fire risk, they automatically raise an alarm and alert the client to the issue. That 54
allows them to take action much more quickly than relying on traditional video or other forms of fire detection – they can react immediately even to the risk of fire breaking out.” Recycling Lives compliance manager Dave Gallagher says: “The prevention of fire, and early detection of any fire that may break out, is of critical importance to protecting our people, infrastructure and the local environment. Whilst our risk controls have proved effective year after year, the opportunity to invest in new technology that enhances our ability to react fast in the event of an emerging fire hazard was one that was not to be missed.”
Tangible results
According to Andy Moore, the results have been tangible and have impressed some influential people. “Recycling Lives recently had a visit from the Environmental Agency as part of a routine inspection,” he says. “The EA were impressed with the standard of risk management and controls on the site, including the recent investment in fire detection technology. As a result, the EA Director of Regulated Industry was invited to site to view the systems in place.” The success of the Preston solution has prompted Recycling Lives to engage ADJ to implement similar systems, over time, at all their other sites across the country.

8MP PTZ captures dramatic scenes at volcano IDIS video technology is being usedin one of the toughest and most dramatic applications: 24/7 monitoring of volcanic activity at Guatemala’s Volcan de Fuego. This volcano, one of the world’s most active and dangerous, is now watched day and night in order to give early warning of impending eruptions. Continual live footage can be viewed online by emergency agencies, scientists and residents, all captured by the 8MP 31x IR PTZ camera. Even from over nine miles away, the 8megapixel model is providing full day and night surveillance of the active caldera, showing sudden gas and ash eruptions as often as every 15 to 20 minutes. Video monitoring alongside data from sensors including seismology and gas detectors aims to protect vulnerable communities living around the volcano by giving early warning. The H.265 IR DC-S3883HRX camera, which features an 8MP, auto focus, and 31x optical zoom lens, IR performance up to 200m, and auto-return positioning sensor, was installed by IDIS, its partner EPCOM and Guatemalan telecommunications specialist Crelosa. Like all IDIS cameras, the model benefits from one-click plug-and-play set up, making it ideal for hassle-free installation at height, in challenging environments, and in locations where engineers are exposed to increased risk.
EU’s tallest building has new visitor management system The tallest building in the European Union, Varso Place in Warsaw, Poland, is now live with Forge Bluepoint visitor management and Inner Range intelligent access control. Forge Bluepoint, Forge’s cloud-based visitor management solution was chosen by Varso Place’s developer HB Reavis after the firm researched the market. Jakub Kacer, Security Manager at HB Reavis said: “When all tenants use Forge Bluepoint, our receptionists will have less administration work, we will have real-time visitor statistics and it’s a modern attractive visitor system.” Forge Bluepoint will allow the main reception teams at each building to focus on the experience at Varso Place. Visitors will be invited by tenants via email which will provide them with a unique QR code. Visitors will use this QR code to check-in at the Forge Bluepoint kiosk or with the reception team. The integration with Inner Range’s Integriti access control system allows visitors to also use the QR code to call the lifts, supplied by Schindler, to access the floor of the tenant company and nowhere else. Paul Speariett, Co-founder and Director at Forge, said: “Working with the onsite security and building management team at Varso Place, in Warsaw, we were able to implement Forge

The IDIS PTZ also features true wide dynamic range (WDR), allowing it to cope in changing lighting conditions; electronic image stabilisation (EIS) ensures steady coverage of scenes at distance, so images from the volcano remain crisp and sharp; and H.265 and intelligent codec requires minimum bandwidth even for 4K live monitoring. The camera also remains stable despite the region’s variable weather conditions, including under strong sun, and when temperatures that fall sharply at night.
Bluepoint during the COVID-19 crisis from the UK. It wasn’t ideal, but we overcame the challenges and are proud to see Forge Bluepoint working to give visitors a great experience.” Tim Northwood, General Manager at Inner Range, said: “Integriti provides robust security and controls around access to these new buildings. But it also allows trouble-free access for users, including the ability to invite and manage visitors easily via Forge Bluepoint.”

Creating safe spaces with hands free access To help mitigate the risk of infection at its Dublin premises, RSPL (Reliable Security Products Ltd) set out to use a mix of automated access control technologies to create a safer, hands-free environment.
London borough upgrades traffic violation cameras The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) has upgraded its network of CCTV cameras after switching to a new hosted Videalert platform to enforce a range of moving traffic contraventions including weight limits, bus lanes, banned turns and box junctions. The five-year contract will see the replacement of the legacy Siemens attended and unattended CCTV enforcement camera solution. According to Tina Brooks, Interim Head of Parking at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham: “Videalert is providing us with high definition cameras that deliver cost savings and productivity whilst offering 99% uptime, a

To achieve this, RSPL approached Abloy UK to supply automatic door operators. The specification links with the building’s access control and door entry system. The automated doors work in conjunction with face recognition technology, temperature screening cameras, a visitor density control system, and ‘no-touch’ door releases. The new system includes the Abloy DA460 electrotechnical swing door operator, complete with DA147 push arm and DA103 mounting plate. To achieve automation these are supplemented by the EL520 motor lock, DA460 lock controller, EA280 door loop, CY326-VL single cylinder and 60-0119-SSS lever handles. Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, said: “Automated access control has existed for a long time, but it’s understandably never been more important or in demand. I believe hands free solutions like this will undoubtedly become more commonplace as we all seek to find a new normal. “Door automation is a simple measure that businesses can introduce to help protect their customers and employees, and anything that helps a company continue its operations while reducing the risk of infection is welcome.” considerable improvement over our previous system. Based on open standards, the Videalert platform provides us with the flexibility to meet all present and future needs, enabling us to seamlessly upgrade to new cameras as they become available in the marketplace. The new system will help us meet our commitment to making our streets safer for road users and pedestrians alike.” Videalert will be installing forty six ONVIFcompliant digital HD CCTV cameras that operate in unattended mode and capture images to minimise discard-rates, increase productivity and help reduce the number of appeals. The hosted platform allows LBBD to maintain a whitelist of exempt vehicles including buses, taxis and emergency vehicles to further improve efficiency. Importantly, Videalert will provide a phased transition in parallel with the introduction of a new Back Office Notice Processing system to ensure minimal downtime during the changeover process. Videalert’s solution also provides a digital attended enforcement facility that utilises LBBD’s existing community safety cameras. The platform includes integration with existing mobile enforcement vehicles from third party suppliers, enabling the council to take a phased approach to migrating from existing assets that are nearing end of life. Captured evidence packs will be stored on Videalert’s hosted digital video platform where they can be accessed and reviewed securely over the internet. Validated evidence packs will be sent to the council’s back office system to issue penalty charge notices (PCN). The hosted platform does not require the installation of any IT at the council’s offices.
