ARTISTAR JEWELS 2018 New scenarios for contemporary jewelry

The volume Artistar Jewels 2018, which collects all the creations selected during the fifth edition of the annual Artistar Jewels event, contains the stories of 170 international designers and their 450 creations. as every edition the jewels chosen by the Artistar team propose an encyclopedic cross-section of contemporary international research jewelry. Between the 50’s and the 60’s of the last century, a strand of jeweller detached from tradition and moved towards experimentation, sometimes incurring criticism but getting increasingly closer to the world of contemporary art. Jewels that are not necessarily made of precious materials and are sometimes “crazy”, hardly wearable, often particular, always powerful. Creations of the highest quality as far as techniques and workmanship are concerned; in some cases they are characterized by a great stylistic research, while in other instances they feature manufacturing excellence and reinterpretation of traditional materials. They are not just objects to be observed, admired and worn: they are first of all objects to tell, to bring to life and to love. For this reason, they must never be considered as creations that perform their function only as decorative items. They can be made by a traditional or research goldsmith, but also by a designer or an artist. Contemporary jewels are mainly characterized

by ideas, experimentation and originality. The stories of these creations open a communication channel and remain in our memory. As a matter of fact Artistar Jewels strongly believes in the communicative power of contemporary jewelry that cannot be fully expressed without the description of projects and professional photos. For this reason all the creations presented in this book became the protagonists of a dedicated shooting organized by the Artistar Jewels team and curated by the Italian photographer Andrea Salpetre. The still life allow a uniform reading of the book and can be used by the selected artists to promote their work. The pages dedicated to each designer contain their biography or the brand philosophy along with the company contacts and the photos of the jewels; a description is also provided which includes the creation title, the jewel type, the materials used and a note explaining to the reader the inspiration and the concept of the collection or of a particular jewel.

The book proposes several special contents. A special section is dedicated to the international artists Yoko Ono, Pol Bury and Faust Cardinali, whose creations are hosted for the first time at Artistar Jewels 2018. Other special contents are dedicated to the winners of the 2017 edition: Emanuele Leonardi, Anna Maria Pitt, Eve

“This is about bringing art closer to the public and the public closer to art. And art, in Italy, means discovering an exemplary past and preparing a radiant future”.

Balashova and Alena Willroth. A special content focuses on the international galleries that will host a selection of works from the 2018 contest and the last one is dedicated to Gabriela Secarea, who in 2017 won the Artistar Jewels @Camera Lucida Award. This book is the fifth of the series dedicated to the Artistar Jewels project and is published by Logo Fausto Lupetti. It will be available nationally and internationally in all bookshops in Italy and in the main European capitals. It will also be sent to 5,000 professionals, including buyers, journalists, bloggers and jewelry galleries. It should be highlighted that the majority of pieces are new, i.e. never published before, and made specifically for Artistar Jewels. The creations are presented seamlessly in alphabetical order by author and are not encased in strict thematic sections; in our historical period, where the materials, the formation of the artists and the design ideas are more and more fluid, it would have been very difficult and reductive to proceed in another way.

In Artistar Jewels 2018 very different creations are represented. Many are the techniques appliedwidely used the traditional ones, such as lost-wax casting, combined with a wide range of handicrafts, from hammering, fretwork, resinate watercolor up to quilling, that is rolled paper strips, modeled and glued together to create decorative designs. But there are also the most modern technologies, such as laser cutting, and the innovative ones, such as the use of ultraviolet materials and 3D Printing, a form of additive production where layers of overlapping materials give life to threedimensional and complex wearable technologies with details that are difficult to obtain at low costs with traditional techniques. As regards the main themes, one is the representation of nature, seen as beautiful - even in its imperfections - powerful and colorful in some cases, as a delicate and precious mystery in others, analyzed and brought back in its infinite facets. Another dominant theme is that of the strong woman for whom jewels of great visual impact are conceived, with messages and meanings standing out from the stereotypes linked to the sugary and romantic feminine figure. The designers are increasingly eco-ethically attentive to the materials used, a new awareness makes its way and becomes an added value within the proposed projects. Some

chose the gold called Fairmined, from the name of an international organization that supports small mines around the world with the aim of improving the working conditions of miners and having a greater control over the environmental impact of mining. The Fairmined quality seal guarantees that gold mining occurs in socially and environmentally sustainable conditions; gold is extracted from small artisanal mines and is subject to strict rules and controls that ensure traceability from the customer to the mine. Others chose Eco Silver, which has the same properties as the common silver, but is made of 100% recycled silver.

The fifth edition of the Artistar Jewels 2018 event is particularly important because it has introduced some significant innovations with an international profile and so has much to tell. From 22 to 25 February 2018 Palazzo dei Giureconsulti, located in the heart of Milan, will be once again the ideal setting for the event. It is here that Artistar Jewels will meet the experts from the sector and all lovers of contemporary jewelry. The exhibition will be open, with free entrance, during the Fashion Week and has the patronage of the Municipality of Milan. All the creations on exhibition and pictured in this book can also be purchased through the e-commerce platform www.artistarjewels.com.

Thanks to one of the major innovations of the new edition, directors of international concept stores, as partners of the event, will choose some brands among those on display to enrich their showcases. The concept stores involved are 16metriqudri of Udine, a meeting place for art and crafts; Creativity Oggetti, a Turin gallery specialized in contemporary jewelry and applied arts since 2001; Materie, a design shop-gallery in Rome. Mio Store in Florence selects objects with an elegant and contemporary design; Nuovum, a concept store in Barcelona where you can find jewels, decorative objects and art; Ottobarradieci of Bergamo, an original space dedicated to design and a reference point for those looking for unusual objects; Oukan, a Berlin concept store with a unique and exclusive style proposal. To close the list, Tiberius concept store in Vienna is characterized by an unconventional, irreverent

6

and provocative style. All the artists selected and included in the exhibition will also participate in a contest at the end of which the most deserving ones will be awarded important prizes that will enrich their professional career. The jury of experts, who will assign the numerous awards, will be composed as follows: Elisabetta Barracchia - Editor of Condé Nast Mag Accessory, Maristella Campi - Fashion and costume journalist, Gianni De LiguoroFounding partner and designer of the high-class costume jewelry De Liguoro brand, Guido Solari - Founder and owner of Scuola Orafa Ambrosiana of Milan, via Savona 20. These last year’s jury members will be joined for the first time by three new international judges: Astrid BerensDirector of SIERAAD ART FAIR of Amsterdam, Dan Piersinaru – Editor and founder of AUTOR, a magazine dedicated to contemporary jewelry, and Irina Slesareva – Editor of Jewelry Review Magazine and Creative Director of the Russian Line Jewelry Contest.

The three winners will participate free of charge in Artistar Jewels 2019 and will be mentioned as special contents in the 2019 edition of the volume. Furthermore the Scuola Orafa Ambrosiana in Milan will offer a course of Professional Goldsmith to a young designer: a unique opportunity to learn the most important laboratory techniques and make various goldsmiths’ wares. Two selected designers will have a free exhibition space at international trade fairs in 2018: Sieraad Art Fair in Amsterdam in November and AUTOR International Contemporary Jewelry Fair in Bucharest in May. An article will be dedicated to the winners in the Condé Nast Mag Accessory magazine of September 2018. Finally, thirty creations selected by the jury will be exhibited in a traveling exhibition in European galleries and international concept stores, such as the ICKX Contemporary Jewelry Gallery in Bruxelles and the Eleni Marneri Galerie in Athens.

Quite a challenge, the preparation of Artistar Jewels 2018 required a great teamwork and the development of important partnerships. Since last edition the event has grown considerably and for the first time has hosted internationally renowned artists. Agreements with concept

stores and international galleries have been closed and important media partners have been involved to support the selected designers; the press review has been quadrupled including publications also in India and New Zealand. The number of members has shown a significant increase, with requests exceeding the availability of places. Artistar Jewels triggered the interest of the public and of the professionals during one of the most important and eventful periods for the city of Milan: the Fashion Week. This would not have been possible without a great common effort, without the passion of the whole group for this sector and above all without the wonderful contents to be told: all protagonists of the selection by Artistar Jewels. These results, that seemed unthinkable only a few months ago, now bode well not only for Artistar Jewels, but also for the future of the whole industry in Italy. Confirmations and growth that encourage everyone to work enthusiastically to offer every year a high level event.

Artistar Jewels is a machine that does not stop; research and scouting at international level are constant. This year as never before, selection requires a reflection on what it means today to choose and wear a jewel. In this hyper-connected and ever smaller world, where everything seems just a click away, information, culture, detailed knowledge, authentic human relationships with the artists, uniqueness and personalization, awareness of what you buy and you wear will become increasingly important. Those who choose and wear these body ornaments love them deeply: they are fascinated by the extraordinary story that lies behind a jewel, recognizing the values that the artist wants to spread. They convey ideas, denunciations or precise aesthetic concepts and by wearing them, they become a tableau vivant of a story. Artistar Jewels 2018 officially welcome you into their world. Just lose yourself among the pages of this book made of colors, material, stories and passions, in a selection attentive to novelty, without fearing the new. You will follow an exciting path inside of you enjoying a high creative rate. This is what we call love for art. Jewels, in the field of the arts, represent the Zeitgeist, the spirit of the time, and are never accessory elements.

AMARIN Jewelry

She received a financial education but was always interested in art and design. “M1”  is her first serious collection and the result of the first year of studying at the Jewelry design course in the “British Higher school of Art and Design” in Moscow, Russia.  She found inspiration in screws, nuts and gears.

The design of this ring is based on a screw mechanism. The stone, located in the center, is fixed with two little nuts and tightly twisted screws. Since no soldering

is used in the manufacture of the ring, the stone can be replaced by another one by the customer himself or with the help of a jeweler.

Pol Bury Belgium

Belgian kinetic artist, painter and filmmaker, Bury was working as a painter at the time and began to participate in Surrealist group exhibitions. He abandoned painting in 1952, after encountering the work of sculptor Alexander Calder. Bury emphasizes movement as an essential element of sculpture, stressing that his works are not complete until they are set into motion. His first kinetic pieces were weathervane-like sculptures that were activated by the viewer. In the later ‘60s, Bury began working in stainless and

Corten steel, producing monumental balls that spun or rolled, columns that rotated and planes that tilted, all operated by concealed electrical mechanisms. The unexpected and irregular motion of the elements can have an unsettling effect on the beholder. This element of surprise and chance is a legacy of the Surrealist movement, which has never fully ceased to inform the artist’s work. Bury has lived and worked in France and the United States and has received a number of large-scale public commissions  for locations throughout the world.
