Walk for Life West Coast overflows waterfront An estimated 30,000-plus pro-life advocates filled the boulevard along San Francisco’s waterfront for nearly a mile Jan. 24 for the 5th Annual Walk for Life West Coast. The crowd heard calls for support for women considering or having had abortions, for opposition to government support of abortion, and for renewed commitment to the pro-life movement. The Jan. 22 March for Life 2009 in Washington, D.C. drew tens of thousands to the nation’s capital. Both events marked the 36th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion. See additional coverage on Page 9.

Pontiff congratulates Obama on inauguration VATICAN CITY (CNS) – Pope Benedict XVI, congratulating Barack Obama on his inauguration as U.S. president, prayed that he would remain steadfast in promoting understanding, cooperation and peace in the world. The pope, in a Jan. 20 telegram, told Obama he prayed God would “grant you unfailing wisdom and strength in the exercise of your high responsibilities.” Popes traditionally send a telegram of congratulations to new presidents of the United States on their inauguration day. Pope Benedict said he prayed, under the new president’s leadership, “may the American people continue to find in their impressive religious and political heritage the spiritual values and ethical principles needed to cooperate in the building of a truly just and free society.”

Vatican launches video channel on YouTube By Carol Glatz VATICAN CITY (CNS) – The Vatican launched a video channel on YouTube that will feature news coverage of Pope Benedict XVI and major Vatican events. It marked the start of the Vatican’s strategic vision of working “to be present wherever people are,” said Archbishop Claudio Celli, head of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. The Vatican officially unveiled the new channel Jan. 23 during a press conference that presented Pope Benedict’s message for World Communications Day, which was dedicated to new media technology. The Vatican channel is the result of a new partnership the Vatican Television Center and Vatican Radio forged with the Internet giant Google and its video-sharing website, YouTube. The Vatican’s television and radio operations had been collaborating for the past year and a half to produce short VATICAN YOUTUBE, page 16
