VATICAN CITY – Saying he no longer has the strength to exercise ministry over the universal church, Pope Benedict XVI announced Feb. 11 that he would be resigning at the end of the month after an eight-year pontificate. “After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” the pope told cardinals gathered for an ordinary public consistory to approve the canonization of new saints. Pope Benedict, who was elected in April 2005, will be the first pope to resign in more than 600 years. He told the cardinals, “In today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of St. Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.”

Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, told journalists at a briefing that the pope’s decision was not prompted by any medical illness, but was due to a natural “decline of strength” associated with old age. Even though the announcement had caught almost everybody by surprise, it was not a snap decision, but rather one that “had matured over the past few months,” Father Lombardi said. The pope made his announcement in Latin from a

VATICAN CITY – While the surprise resignation of Pope Benedict XVI is a first for the church in centuries, it also leads to a complicated period of transition that ends in the election of a new pope. Regulated by ancient traditions and recent rules, the period between popes – known by the Latin term “interregnum” – will begin exactly at 8 p.m. Rome time Feb. 28, a date and time Pope Benedict stipulated in a declaration he made Feb. 11 for when the See of Rome and the See of St. Peter will be vacant. Normally the interregnum begins with a pope’s death and is followed by a period of mourning. This time the pope will resign from his ministry and spend a short period of prayer and reflection at the papal summer villa in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, before moving to a monastery at the Vatican. The rules governing the interregnum are matters of church law, not dogma.

Cardinals govern before new election

The apostolic constitution “Universi Dominici Gregis” confirms that as long as the Holy See is vacant, the universal church is governed by the College of Cardinals, which cannot, however, make decisions normally reserved to the pope. Such matters must be postponed until the new pope is elected. Until there is a pope, the Roman Curia – the Vati-

can’s network of administrative offices – loses most of its cardinal supervisors and cannot handle any new business. The College of Cardinals is to deal solely with “ordinary business and matters which cannot be postponed.” At present, there are 209 cardinals, and all of them are asked to meet in Rome to help administer the transition period. The College of Cardinals does this through two structures: a general congregation, in which all the cardinals are to meet daily; and Cardinal Sodano a particular four-member congregation, consisting of the chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and a rotating team of three cardinal assistants.

When he delivered his announcement, the pope seemed very “composed, concentrated” and read “in a solemn manner” in keeping with the importance of what he was saying, Father Lombardi said. Fulfilling the canonical requirement, Pope Benedict solemnly declared to the cardinals, “Well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of St. Peter, entrusted to me by the cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of St. Peter, will be vacant and a conclave to elect the new supreme pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.” It is up to the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, to make preparations for a conclave to elect a new pope. Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said in a statement that the pope’s announcement “is but another sign of his great care for the church.” “The Holy Father brought the tender heart of a pastor, the incisive mind of a scholar and the confidence of a soul united with his God in all he did,” the cardinal said, adding: “We are sad that he will be resigning but grateful for his eight years of selfless leadership as successor of St. Peter. “The occasion of his resignation stands as an important moment in our lives as citizens of the world. Our experience impels us to thank God for the gift of Pope Benedict,” he continued. “Our hope impels us to pray that the College of Cardinals under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit choose a worthy successor to meet the challenges present in today’s world.”

Marin retreats offer spiritual renewal through silence CATHOLIC SAN FRANCISCO

Dominican Father Bruno Gibson has an invitation for Catholics looking to deepen their faith: Experience silence as a way to inspire spiritual enthusiasm. Assigned to St. Dominic Parish in San Francisco, Father Gibson is spending a sabbatical year in Marin County leading daylong retreats and meditations in a program he calls “A View from the Ridge.” “It’s called ‘A View from the Ridge’ because it’s on a beautiful spot, perhaps the most extraordinary panorama that one could imagine,” he said. “You see from Mount Tamalpais on one side, all over the Marin headlands, Belvedere Island, the Golden Gate, the bay in between, stretching all the way over to Angel Island.” The beauty of the setting brings something important to the retreat, Father Gibson said: “The gift I’ve felt that this gives is the gift of silence.” The retreats themselves have a theme. “I try to follow the seasons,” he said, “but I also try to follow whatever is topical.” The project started as a Lenten meditation, “With Christ in the Desert,” 12 years ago,” said Father Gibson, a native San Franciscan who was ordained in 1960 and has served at Dominican parishes and centers in California, Oregon and Washington. St. Hilary parishioner Marilyn Knight hosts “A View from the Ridge” retreats in her home in Tiburon. Beginning with continental breakfast at 9 a.m., the program usually includes a talk by a fellow Dominican, silent periods, conferences with retreat leaders, Mass and a post-retreat social hour. Knight offers her library for meditation and contemplation. Knight tries to keep the number of participants to fewer than 25. Most are between 40 and 60 years old and many are regulars. “They really like the sense of silence and the opportunity to hear different preachers,” she said. Father Gibson said leading retreats fulfills the Dominican spirit of “contemplata aliis tradere” – a phrase from St. Thomas Aquinas meaning to contemplate and communicate to others the fruits of one’s contemplation. He said the retreats attract “people who are more interested in deepening their experience of Mass, people who are curious about their

‘No one is perfect’: More Lenten inspiration A silent retreat is one way to deepen your faith during Lent. Acting your faith by sharing with others is one more. Courtesy of the Stanford (University) Catholic Community, here are more ideas for Lenten reflection and action. NO ONE IS PERFECT. We all need God’s forgiveness for habits of the heart that make us less than wonderful to those around us. If you are Catholic, receive the sacrament of reconciliation. If you do not have a big “sin” or issue to talk about, choose an ongoing habit of behavior that you are not happy about. Understanding that God has already forgiven you the minute you are sorry (and maybe even before that), how does it make you feel to have that knowledge reinforced by the words of absolution? If you are not Catholic, seek a clergyman of your choice and discuss some things in your life that you regret and would like to change. Does it help to talk about this with someone who understands God’s forgiveness? THERE ARE PEOPLE LIVING SILENTLY IN OUR MIDST who are dealing with disabilities, with difficulties or with situations that are making them feel alienated from the community at large. Sometimes, the feeling of loneliness and isolation is as painful as the situation itself. Jesus, as we know, came to heal and to reconcile. Can you think of someone who could use a kind word, some attention, a helping hand or moral support right now? Just do it.

The couples who renewed their vows Feb. 2 at St. Mary’s Cathedral ranged from the Cucalons, who married 60 years ago in Panama, to Don and Irene Broderick, married less than two years ago at St. Elizabeth Church, San Francisco. “You feel the presence of the Holy Spirit from all the other couples,” said Don Broderick of All Souls Parish, South San Francisco, who said Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone told them, “you’re the ones who’ve been married one year, nine months” when they met him at the reception after the ceremony. Sixty-two couples renewed their vows, representing more than 2,200 years of married life and more than 30 parishes. “A lot of wisdom there, a lot of powerful examples,” said the archbishop, who celebrated the Mass with auxiliary Bishops Robert W. McElroy and William J. Justice, and several other priests, including Most Holy Redeemer pastor Father Brian Costello. All sacramentally married couples were welcome to participate. Irene Broderick said the opportunity to renew vows, standing in the pew with her husband, surrounded by other couples doing the same thing, was very powerful, because there were no distractions and no worry about the wedding details as they looked directly into each other’s eyes. “I feel very strongly he is my gift,”

When they learned of the Mass, they brought their family celebration, planned for St. Dunstan Parish, to the cathedral, with all three children, spouses and five grandchildren. “To me its patience and understanding, you have to give and take,”

said Adelaida Zuraek. And faith: “To me, you really have to give love.” Mario and Norma Panoringan were married 43 years ago at St. Edward the Confessor Church, which was in the Richmond District of San Francisco. The secret to a happy marriage, Mario Panoringan said, is “being together, sharing the things that are dear to both of us.” “Christ is the bridegroom who gives his life for his bride the

church,” the archbishop said in his homily. The example of sacramentally married couples reflects God’s covenant with the church, and is a witness of that love, he said. Antonio Cucalon, married Feb. 7, 1953, says his wife Rosario is the reason for their 60 years of happiness. The two met in Panama where he practiced general dentistry. “It was a short romance, we just went ahead, got married and took off for USC,” he said, marveling that his wife, one of 13 children, was willing to leave everything for him and go to Los Angeles where he studied orthodontics. “She is always willing to give, always very loving,” Cucalon said. Rosario Cucalon says she is very lucky, with her husband, with their four children. “My husband has a beautiful temperament. He’s very easy to get along with,” she said. Marriage is “foundational for the common good,” and important for children to have a mother and a father, Archbishop Cordileone said. But beyond that, he said, “in your covenant of marriage, you signify the love of God.” That might sound like “highfaluting” theology, the archbishop said, but it is acted out daily by young couples who take turns getting up in the middle of the night for a crying baby and in the times when, despite everything, a husband or wife foregoes the silent treatment and offers forgiveness. Marriage is “the sacrament of mutual gift of self, of self-surrender so two might become one,” he said.

Surprise, sadness and understanding greeted Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement that he will resign the papacy Feb. 28. “I’m sad. I really like him as a pope. I respect him,” said Brooke Burns, after noon Mass Feb. 11 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. “I think he is super courageous but I also believe he is doing what he believes is the will of God and I respect that and I trust that whoever is picked next will follow in his footsteps. I’m supportive ultimately, but it definitely came as a shock.” Carlo Santos saw the pope last year during a visit to the Vatican and said there “was just this aura of holiness about him.” He called the pope “courageous” and said he was “was very deeply saddened’’ by the announcement. “He stood up for many of the Catholic rights and very conservative policy,” Santos said. “I’ve always respected him as a pope and a leader of the church. There are so many issues to deal with nowadays.” “I’m shocked, as we all are,” said Robert Hance, sitting in a pew at the cathedral after Mass. Hance visited Rome on business last year. Going to the Vatican, and seeing the pope, “really was a wonderful experience,” Hance said. “I feel a connection to the pope in a way I didn’t know you could.” Claire Diepenbrock, speaking before Mass at the cathedral, said, “I think he’s probably doing the right thing if his health is not permitting to let him carry on. We’re sorry to lose him, very sorry to lose him.” In a statement, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone expressed “deep gratitude” to Pope Benedict XVI for a lifetime of service. “Those of us who know him and who have watched his whole life unfold in service to God, can see that that this decision to step down was motivated by his own discernment of what best serves the good of the church,” Archbishop Cordileone said.

“I will pray for him with great filial affection, and ask that we all hold him in prayer at this time,” the archbishop said. “May God bless him and may God guide the College of Cardinals as they choose his successor.” Jesuit Father Joseph Fessio is founder and editor of San Francisco-based Ignatius Press, the primary publisher of Pope Benedict XVI’s books in English. “I think it’s good for the church if this is what he believes God wants,” said Father Fessio, a longtime friend and former student of Pope Benedict XVI. When obtaining a doctorate in theology at the University of Regensburg in Germany, 1972-75, Joseph Ratzinger now Pope Benedict, was Father Fessio’s doctoral director and mentor. “I love the man and I think he is a wonderful person and a great pope,” said Father Fessio. “I’d like him to stay as long as I am alive. He is going to do what he believes is right and what he believes is God’s will and that will be the best.”

San Francisco’s 26th annual Memorial Service for the Victims of Abortion will have a new date and sharpened focus in 2013. The March 7 gathering will continue to offer prayer, Scripture, homilies and a placing of roses, but will also begin the practice of highlighting a different Bay Area pro-life ministry or organization each year. Formerly, this service took place on the eve of January’s Walk for Life West Coast. “Moving the event to the time of Lent has several advantages. Lent is a time for renewal and repentance. Separating the Walk for Life and the memorial service provides the Bay Area with another distinct opportunity to gather ecumenically in support of life. Additionally, by drawing attention to a specific pro-life group each year, we hope to encourage financial and volunteer support for that group,” said IFCL chairman Greek Orthodox Father Aris P. Metrakos. The 2013 memorial service will spotlight San Francisco’s Alpha Pregnancy Center, whose prenatal counseling and postpartum support provide women facing crisis pregnancies with an alternative to abortion. HOUSTON – The prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith urged Anglicans entering the Catholic Church to “be courageous in maintaining the vibrancy and orthodoxy” of their faith in their new spiritual home. “It takes a great deal of courage to be Catholic and so I say to you: Be courageous,” Archbishop Gerhard L. Muller told a Feb. 2 symposium marking the first anniversary of the Catholic Church’s U.S. Archbishop ordinariate for former Anglicans. Muller “Your loyalty to the Holy Father and your commitment to seeking the truth has brought you this far and will sustain you, and will also serve as a powerful encouragement to those ‘born’ into the Catholic Church to rediscover her beauty and the consistency of her teaching. Your ‘youthful enthusiasm’ is a great gift,” he said. Archbishop Muller called for a “culture of communion” and the continued path toward Christian reunification. The Houston-based Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, created by the Vatican for former Anglican groups and clergy seeking to become Catholic, includes 30 priests – all former Anglicans who have completed an approved formation program – and about 1,600 people in 36 communities across the U.S. and Canada, most of whom became Catholic within the past year. MELBOURNE, Fla. – Franciscan Father Richard Rohr told a Florida audience that he is about to end 43 years of giving retreats all over the world “and I haven’t found a single perfect person.” “We all come to God by falling, by doing it wrong,” he said. “The ego doesn’t like that.” The San Pedro Spiritual Development Center in Winter Park partnered with St. Stephen Parish in nearby Winter Springs to welcome the priest Jan. 24-27 on the last leg of his final tour. For two evenings and a retreat weekend for 150 men that sold out before it was ever marketed, Father Rohr inspired more than 1,000 participants – many of whom attended both evenings, sold more than 1,000 of his books and CDs and signed every book presented for autograph. A prolific author, speaker and founder of the Center for Contemplation and Action in Albuquerque, N.M., he is celebrating his 70th birthday in March with the launch of the Rohr Institute’s Living School for Action and Contemplation.

From purpose to transformation

“Psychologist Carl Jung said that the two major tasks in life are building your ego structure in the first half and getting beyond the building to the purpose of life in the second,” Father Rohr said. “It is transformation that gets you from the first to the second half – the transformation of failure. The normal paths of transformation are great love and great suffering – there is something more than you love yourself.” He cited families with a handicapped child, couples after divorce, a homosexual coming out, rejection, the marginalized, and the excluded as examples of suffering. “Great suffering lets us see reality is not the way it seems,” Father Rohr continued. “Struggling moves you to a higher level of spirituality and whatever happens to you is pure grace.” Laughter erupted throughout the evening presentations as participants followed Father Rohr’s example and advice to “laugh at yourself.”

It gives a false satisfaction.” As if to add weight to his own authority, he told the crowd: “I checked this out personally with Dr. (Mehmet) Oz,” a physician with a popular nationally syndicated talk show. “He said the mind is a binary system,” the priest said. “It functions with comparison – short/ tall, win/lose, if it’s not this, it’s that. It’s not true, but it’s helpful in a world of constant binary choices. Rushing to judge

It was this that most touched Donna Walters from Annunciation Parish in Altamonte Springs, a senior in the Orlando diocese’s Commissioned Lay Ecclesial Ministry Program at San Pedro Center. “We all do it,” Walters said. “We’re so full of our ego, we rush to judge. We have to be aware of it and then we can reflect and change. Are we open enough, empty enough to hear the still small voice? God transforms us through love.” Jerry McDaniel, a St. Stephen parishioner, said the highlight was the healing service. Each man was sent off with a strip of red tape to place pieces on different parts of their bodies where there has been pain or humiliation. They returned to put the pieces of tape from their bodies onto a crucifix. “It looked like blood,” McDaniel said. “Father said, ‘You’ve given it all to Jesus. You don’t have the right to take it back. Move on from here.’ He has profoundly changed the way I think about things.”

WASHINGTON – The new proposed rules issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services concerning the contraceptive mandate in the Affordable Care Act show movement but fall short of addressing the U.S. bishops’ concerns, New York Cardinal and bishops’ president Timothy M. Dolan said Feb. 7. The bishops “look forward” to engaging the government on serious issues that remain, he said. The bishops stand by a March committee statement affirmed by the entire body of bishops last June, he said. In that statement, he said, the bishops expressed concern over the mandate’s “exceedingly narrow” four-part definition of “religious employer,” one that exempted houses of worship, but left “our great ministries of service to our neighbors, namely, the poor, the homeless, the sick, the students in our schools and universities, and others in need” subject to the mandate.

LOS ANGELES – Cardinal Roger M. Mahony will “no longer have any administrative or public duties” as retired archbishop of Los Angeles because of past failures to protect children from clergy sex abuse, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez announced Jan. 31. The archbishop’s statement came the same day the archdiocese released 12,000 pages of personnel files of clergy who were the subject of a 2007 global abuse settlement. The material has been posted on the website http://clergyfiles.la-archdiocese.org, along with supporting information that includes the names of members of the hierarchy involved in the handling of abuse allegations. Archbishop Gomez also accepted Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J. Curry’s request to be relieved of his responsibility as the regional bishop of Santa Barbara. Cardinal Mahony, 76, headed the archdiocese from 1985 until his March 2011 retirement. Bishop Curry, 70, was the archdiocese’s vicar for clergy and chief adviser on sexual abuse cases in the mid-1980s. “These files document abuses that happened decades ago,” Archbishop Gomez said Jan. 31. “But that does not make them less serious. I find these files to be brutal and painful reading. The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil. “There is no excuse, no explaining away what happened to these children. The priests involved had the duty to be their spiritual fathers and they failed. We need to acknowledge that terrible failure today,” he said.

Some of the files show in the 1980s that some archdiocesan officials worked to conceal child molestation by priests from law enforcement authorities. Memos exchanged in 1986 and 1987 by the cardinal and the bishop detail proposals to keep police from Cardinal investigating three Mahony priests who had admitted to church officials that they molested young boys. Archbishop Gomez in his statement noted that Cardinal Mahony “has expressed his sorrow for his failure to fully protect young people entrusted to his care” and Bishop Curry “has also publicly apologized for his decisions while serving as vicar for clergy.” “Effective immediately,” he continued, “I have informed Cardinal Mahony that he will no longer have any administrative or public duties” and accepted Bishop Curry’s request “to be relieved of his responsibility as the regional bishop of Santa Barbara.” Jesuit Father Tom Reese, director of the Religion and Public Policy program at Georgetown University’s Woodstock Theological Center, said Archbishop Gomez’s steps were extraordinary. “This is the first time that an archbishop has publicly recognized the failings of his predecessor in handling the abuse crisis and punished him by limiting his ministry,” he said. MANCHESTER, England – Members of Britain’s House of Commons voted, 400-175, to allow same-sex marriage, pushing a controversial piece of legislation closer to becoming law. The vote followed six hours of debate and represented the first time lawmakers were able to vote on the redefinition of marriage to include same-sex couples. The bill will now be scrutinized in committee before having a third reading in the House of Commons and must also pass through the House of Lords before it would become law later this year. The Catholic Church has campaigned against the bill, which is also strongly opposed by the Church of England, the mainstream Protestant denominations and by Jewish, Muslim and Sikh leaders.

Bishops warn lawmakers

The Catholic bishops have directly warned lawmakers that the proposals will destabilize marriage, harm the well-being of children, jeopardize religious liberty and undermine the ability of the church to function effectively in civil society. But introducing the second reading debate Feb. 5, Culture Secretary Maria Miller promised Parliament that the bill would not pose a threat to religious

Prime minister opposes bill

Prime Minister David Cameron depended on the support of the opposition Labor Party as a majority of his Conservative Party members – 139 – voted against the bill, while 132 voted in favor. Yvette Cooper, Labor Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, praised the bill and told the House of Commons that no religious group “owns marriage.� “Religious organizations shouldn’t be required to hold same-sex marriage but

He said the closure or secularization of Catholic adoption agencies that could not assess same-sex couples under equality laws introduced in 2007 “was a good example� of how Parliament was not able to control the interpretation of laws it introduced.

percent of births in the U.S. today are to single mothers, de Solenni said. “There is something missing there, in terms of a father for the child, the security of knowing that your mother and father love each other,� she said. Lacking complete or stable families, many raised since the 1970s have failed to develop the capacity for strong and intimate relationships, de Solenni said. They have also failed to receive religious education in the home, which the church teaches should be the primary site of such instruction. Yet the ethos of promiscuity is losing its luster for the young, de Solenni said, pointing to evidence from popular culture. In the last decade the television series “Sex and the City� portrayed a libertine lifestyle as a glamorous option for women, she said, but the cur-

rent hit “Girls� highlights the anomie and alienation that such behavior produces. “It’s a very gritty, almost depressing portrayal,� de Solenni said. “I honestly don’t think that’s what women want, or what most young women want. I think people do that because they think that’s what you’re supposed to do.� Young Americans are hungering for the sorts of relationships, love and intimacy that they can best find in the church, she said, as well as for the personal dignity that Catholic moral teaching ensures. The church’s social teaching is also eminently suited to addressing the nation’s current economic woes, she said, which are largely the consequence of the previous generation squandering young Americans’ future.

WASHINGTON – Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to resign Feb. 28 “was taken with much grace, courage, wisdom and humility,” said the most recent U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, Miguel Diaz. Diaz, now the University of Dayton’s professor of faith and culture, told Catholic News Service in a Feb. 11 phone interview that he hopes that in this period before a new pope is elected, the entire church will pray about and discuss the possibilities presented by a change in the top leadership of the Catholic Church. Diaz recalled fondly his meetings with Pope Benedict while he served as ambassador from August 2009 until last November. A replacement for the post has not yet been named. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry both issued statements of appreciation for the pope’s leadership and recalled their meetings with him.

SPOKESMAN: ‘CARDINALS WILL BE AUTONOMOUS’

VATICAN CITY – Even though Pope Benedict XVI will spend his retirement near Rome and then inside Vatican City, he will not play any role in the upcoming election for a new pope, and he will not interfere with the responsibilities and decision-making activities of the new pontiff, the Vatican spokesman said. Rather, the new pope will have the prayerful support and empathy of someone who understands “more than anyone in the world” the burden and responsibilities of being a pope, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi said Feb. 12. In response to questions about how a conclave and a new papacy will be played out while a former pope is still alive and living in the vicinity, Father Lombardi said, “there will be

Diaz said that with the return to his role as a theologian, he’s especially excited by the possibilities this moment holds for the church. “What we need in this moment of grace is to have a national and inter-

national conversation about who the next leader should be,” he said. In a time when “every faithful Catholic has had those moments when we contemplate leaving the church, or fear that ‘my kids are going to leave,’” this is a moment when Catholicism’s leaders should discuss how to meet such challenges, he said. With the pope’s resignation coming in Lent, a time of fasting, prayer and reflection, Diaz said he hopes to encourage and participate in dialogue that leads to transformation, just as Lent in the liturgical tradition “leads to resurrection, transformation and change.” Diaz noted that of course “we don’t have a vote” in who is elected pope, but that people at all levels of the church can pray and offer guidance to those who do vote, encouraging them to consider who can best tackle the complex issues that lie ahead for the church. “We don’t know if the cardinals are going to have this conversation, but they should,” he said.

VATICAN CITY – The president of the Pontifical Council for the Family said his defense of the dignity of homosexual persons and their individual rights was misinterpreted, perhaps intentionally. “It is one thing to verify whether in existing laws one can find norms that would safeguard individual rights. It’s another thing to approve certain expectations,” Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, council president, told Vatican Radio Feb. 6. At a Vatican news conference Feb. 4, Archbishop Paglia had insisted that only a lifelong union of a man and a woman could be termed a marriage. The archbishop also said the church’s affirmation of the full dignity of all human beings led him to oppose laws that outlaw homosexuality. In addition, he said that “to promote justice and to protect the weak,” greater efforts were needed to ensure legal protection and inheritance rights for people

MANCHESTER, England – In one of the most fascinating archaeological finds in recent times, a skeleton found under a parking lot in the central English city of Leicester has been confirmed by DNA tests as that of King Richard III, the monarch depicted by William Shakespeare as a devious hunchback uttering the memorable line: “Now is the winter of our discontent ….” Richard was slain during the Battle of Bosworth Field Aug. 22, 1485, and his body was given a prompt burial under a Franciscan friary, which was later suppressed and demolished. Bosworth had the effect of bringing the War of the Roses to a close, ending a long conflict between the Houses of Lancaster and York and ushering in a new era because it also brought the victor to the English throne as Henry VII, the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Plans are afoot to bury the remains of Richard in Leicester’s Anglican cathedral, and these have been met with indignation by some Catholics who believe that, because Richard was a Catholic (all of England was in the 15th century), he should be buried in a Catholic church using Catholic rites. An e-petition has now been lodged on the British government website, a facility to allow the public to raise matters of concern. The petition points out that Richard was never a member of the Church of England and claims that the Anglican Church was an invention of the son of the “man responsible for his death and ignominious burial.” This claim, however, is historically inaccurate. King Henry VIII did not create the Church of England but took the Catholic Church in England into schism: He would happily persecute both Catholics who asserted papal primacy and Protestants who denied the Real Presence. VATICAN CITY – During his almost eight-year pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI impressed the world as a teacher, guiding Catholics to the sources of the faith and urging modern society not to turn its back on God. Citing his age and diminishing energy, the 85-year-old pope announced Feb. 11 that he would be resigning effective Feb. 28 and would devote the rest of his life to prayer. As pastor of the universal church, he used virtually every medium at his disposal – books and Twitter, sermons and encyclicals – to catechize the faithful on the foundational beliefs and practices of Christianity, ranging from the sermons of St. Augustine to the sign of the cross. Having served in his 30s as an influential adviser during the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council, he made it a priority as pope to correct what he saw as overly expansive interpretations of Vatican II in favor of readings that stressed the council’s continuity with the church’s millennial traditions.

Highlighting church’s moral boundaries

Under his oversight, the Vatican continued to highlight the church’s moral boundaries on issues such as end-of-life medical care, marriage and homosexuality. But the pope’s message to society at large focused less on single issues and more on the risk of losing the basic relationship between the human being and the Creator. He consistently warned the West that unless its secularized society rediscovered religious values, it could not hope to engage in real dialogue with Islamic and other religious cultures. In his encyclicals and in his books on “Jesus of Nazareth,” the pope honed that message, asking readers to discover the essential connections between sacrificial love, works of charity, a dedication to the truth and the Gospel of Christ. The German-born pontiff did not try to match the popularity of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, but the millions of people who came to see him in Rome and abroad came to appreciate his smile, his frequent ad libs and his ability to speak from the heart. Although he did not expect to travel much, he ended up making 24 trips to six continents and three times presided over World Youth Day mega-gatherings, in Germany in 2005, in Australia in 2008, and in Spain in 2011. Talking about aging last March when he met the 85-yearold Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Havana, Pope Benedict told him, “Yes, I’m old, but I can still carry out my duties.”

He set forth a moral challenge on issues ranging from economic justice to abortion. He also took church recognition of the priestly sex abuse scandal to a new level, expressing his personal shame at what happened and praying with the victims. The pope met three times with former U.S. President George W. Bush, including a formal visit to the White House, and the two leaders found wide areas of agreement on pro-life and family issues. Pope Benedict was 78 and in apparent good health when elected April 19, 2005, but was said to have told his fellow cardinals that his would not be a long papacy like that of his predecessor. In an interview with the German author Peter Seewald in 2010, Pope Benedict said: “If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right and, under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign.” As inevitable as his election seemed after Blessed John Paul died in 2005, his path to the papacy was long and indirect. Joseph Ratzinger was born April 16, 1927, in the Bavarian town of Marktl am Inn, the third and youngest child of a police officer, Joseph Sr., and his wife, Maria. Young Joseph joined his brother, Georg, at a minor seminary in 1939. Like other young students, he was automatically enrolled in the Hitler Youth program, but soon stopped going to meetings. During World War II, he was conscripted into the army, and in the spring of 1945 he deserted his unit and returned home, spending a few months in an Allied prisoner-of-war camp. He returned to the seminary late in 1945 and was ordained six years later, along with his brother.

Witnessed Nazi brutality

In a meeting with young people in 2006, the pope said witnessing the brutality of the Nazi regime helped convince him to become a priest. But he also had to overcome some doubts, he said. For one thing, he asked himself whether he “could faithfully live celibacy” his entire life. He also recognized that his real leanings were toward theology and wondered whether he had the qualities of a good pastor and the ability

But he began to have misgivings about an emerging anti-Roman bias, the idea of a “church from below” run on a parliamentary model, and the direction of theological research in the church – criticism that would become even sharper in later years. In a 2005 speech that served as a kind of manifesto for his young papacy, Pope Benedict rejected what he called a “her-

dissent from church teachings and pressure for women’s ordination. Serving in this role for nearly a quarter century, thenCardinal Ratzinger earned a reputation in some quarters as a sort of grand inquisitor, seeking to stamp out independent thinking, an image belied by his passion for debate with thinkers inside and outside the church.

Writings numbered more than 1,000

The new pope spent most of his energy writing and preaching, in encyclicals, letters, messages, homilies and talks that eventually numbered more than a thousand. Surprising those who had expected a by-the-book pontificate from a man who had spent more than 23 years as the Vati-

can’s chief doctrinal official, Pope Benedict emphasized that Christianity was a religion of love and not a religion of rules. During the 2010-11 Year for Priests, Pope Benedict held up the 19th-century French St. John Vianney as a model of clerical holiness who struggled against the indifference and hostility of a militantly secular society. He convened a Synod of Bishops on Scripture in 2008, in an effort to move the Bible back to the center of individual spirituality and pastoral planning. He opened a Year of Faith in October presided over a synod focusing on the new evangelization and a revival of Christian faith in the secular West, one of the priorities of his pontificate. Some of Pope Benedict’s most memorable statements came when he applied simple Gospel values to social issues such as the protection of human life, the environment and economics. When the global financial crisis worsened in 2008, for example, the pope insisted that financial institutions must put people before profits. He also reminded people that modern ideals of money and material success are passing realities, saying: “Whoever builds his life on these things – on material things, on success, on appearances – is building on sand.”

Touches of liturgical antiquity

Pope Benedict’s outreach to traditionalist Catholics brought him some opposition and criticism. In 2007, he widened the possible use of the Tridentine Mass and began introducing touches of antiquity in his own liturgies, including the requirement of kneeling when receiving Communion from the pope. Then in 2009, in an effort to reconcile with the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X, he lifted the excommunications of four of the society’s bishops who were ordained illicitly in 1988. A storm of criticism erupted

because one of the four, Bishop Richard Williamson, had made a number of statements – widely available on the Internet, but unknown to the pope – denying the extent of the Holocaust. The Vatican scrambled to distance Pope Benedict from the bishop’s views and reaffirm the pontiff ’s commitment to Catholic-Jewish dialogue. The pope himself wrote an unusually personal letter to the world’s bishops, defending his efforts to restore church unity by reaching out to traditionalists and expressing sadness that even some Catholics seemed ready to attack him “with open hostility.” At the same time, he clearly acknowledged mistakes in Vatican communications and said the Holy See would have to do a better job using the Internet in the future. Instead, the mishaps continued, and for most of the year preceding Pope Benedict’s resignation, press coverage of the Vatican was dominated by the so-called “VatiLeaks” affair, a scandal over confidential and sometimes embarrassing confidential documents that had been provided to the press, allegedly by the pope’s own butler, Paolo Gabriele. A Vatican court found Gabriele guilty in October and sentenced him to 18 months in jail. Pope Benedict, meeting his former aide outside his cell in the Vatican police barracks, pardoned him just before Christmas.

Rekindling ‘dying flame’

The pope’s 2009 letter to bishops also summarized what he saw as his main mission as the successor of Peter: “In our days, when in vast areas of the world the faith is in danger of dying out like a flame which no longer has fuel, the overriding priority is to make God present in this world and to show men and women the way to God.” The idea that God is disappearing from the human hori-

zon and that humanity is losing its bearings with “evident destructive effects” was a theme Pope Benedict saw as common ground for dialogue between Christians and Muslims. He voiced the church’s opposition to a potential “clash of civilizations” in which religion was seen as a defining difference. But sometimes his words drew as much criticism as praise, particularly among Muslims who felt the pope was unfairly questioning the foundations of their religion. In a lecture at Germany’s University of Regensburg in 2006, the pope quoted a Christian medieval emperor who said the prophet Mohammed had brought “things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.” Following protests in the Islamic world, which included the burning of churches in the Palestinian territories and the murder of a nun in Somalia, the pope said he was sorry his words had offended Muslims and distanced himself from the text he had quoted. Later that year, visiting a mosque in Turkey, he turned toward Mecca and prayed silently alongside his host. This interfaith gesture generated considerable good will, and over the succeeding years, Pope Benedict continued to meet with Muslim leaders. Yet some Muslims continued to view the pope with suspicion or hostility, such as the prominent cleric who reiterated complaints about the Regensburg speech in the run-up to the pope’s trip to Lebanon in September.

of Constantinople to visit the patriarch at his headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2006. Two years later, the pope invited the patriarch to give a major address at the Synod of Bishops. The Vatican also arranged the resumption of theological talks with the Orthodox in mid2006 and began new forms of cultural collaboration with the Russian Orthodox Church. The fate of Christian minorities around the world was one of the pope’s major concerns, especially in places like Iraq and other predominantly Muslim countries. The pope strongly defended the right to religious freedom in his speech to the United Nations in 2008. In early 2007, the pope turned his attention to China, convening a meeting of church experts to discuss ways to bring unity to the church and gain concessions from the communist government. A papal letter to Chinese Catholics a few months later encouraged bold new steps to bridge the gap between Catholics registered with the government-controlled Catholic Patriotic Association and the so-called underground communities, whose leaders were frequently harassed or imprisoned by the authorities. The pope’s letter also issued a broad invitation to government authorities for dialogue on the appointment of bishops and other topics. A number of bishops were subsequently ordained with both papal and government approval, before the government returned to the practice of choosing bishops without the Vatican’s approval.

VATICAN CITY – Journalists tracking meetings that preceded the 2005 conclave to elect a successor to Pope John Paul II noted Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s rising status among the electors but doubted his chances to gain the 77 votes needed to win. He was seen as divisive by some in the church, and many thought the cardinals would choose someone with more pastoral experience. In the end, the cardinals turned to a man who offered doctrinal firmness, a sharp intellect and a clear vision of the threats facing the church and the faith. In the days before and after the pope’s death, he emphasized his concerns about the urgent challenges facing the church. In meditations written for the Way of the Cross at the Rome Colosseum on Good Friday, March 25, 2005, he said too many Catholics continue to scorn and scourge Jesus in his church. “Christ suffers in his own church,” he said. He described “the falling of many Christians away from Christ and into a godless secularism,” but also the fall of those Catholics who abuse the sacraments or their positions in the church. He said the church often seems like “a boat about to sink, a boat taking in water on every side.” Less than a month later, April 19, Cardinal Ratzinger, dean of the College of Cardinals, was elected the 264th successor of Peter. Several months ago, the Vatican said Pope Benedict had completed work on another encyclical, this one on the virtue of faith, and its publication was expected in the first half of this year. The Vatican has not said whether or not the letter would come out before the pope’s resignation takes effect Feb. 28. His three-volume work, “Jesus of Nazareth,” published between 2007 and 2012 in several languages, emphasized that Christ must be understood as the son of God on a divine mission, not as a mere moralist or social reformer. Sparks of inspiration at inauguration

recently had the opportunity to be present at the presidential inauguration, thanks to an esteemed senator. No doubt, impressions of notable events differ widely but allow me to give you mine. I surveyed the crowd at the National Mall. From the U.S. Capitol, you could see FATHER EUGENE throngs of peoHEMRICK ple all the way to the Lincoln Memorial, two miles away. Awesome best describes being in the midst of a historical event. Experiencing the moment is absolutely spellbinding. President Barack Obama’s address was inspiring, but not filled with the applause he usually receives. Perhaps it was because much of what he said was touched on before: the need for equality, women receiving equal pay for equal work, allowing immigrants to seek a better life in the United States and affordable health care for all. Ecological stewardship, improving infrastructures, education, research and science also received priority. The need for mature congressional dialogue was implied in the statement that name-calling is not legitimate debate. What particularly made the speeches at the inauguration inspiring is that they echoed the prophets of the Old Testament and the beatitudes, speaking to the divine urge in us to live God’s blessed life on earth. Richard Blanco’s poem turned life inside out. Instead of advocating middle-class values in political terms, he employed poetic imagery, picturing his father cutting sugar cane so he could obtain an education. Blanco’s poem and the inaugural luncheon were the inspirational gems of the moment. Why? It is because poetry reveals the very soul of life, enabling us to uncover life’s often overlooked beauty as well as its dark side. Those who spoke at the inaugural luncheon were refreshingly candid, humorous and momentarily nonpolitical. Hearing them speaking from the heart was heart-lifting. Without doubt we need wise and prudent visionary leaders. Equally true is the need for good human beings who exude feeling and open their hearts, causing us to open our hearts. Interestingly, the luncheon talks took place around the dinner table, making us wonder how much better our country would be if we sat around it more often and opened our hearts in a spirit of mutual humor and respect for each other. My guess is problems would melt more quickly and solutions would be found swiftly. Inaugurations come and go, and with each there is a flicker of inspiration. March for life all year long

hat a wonderful sight to behold: From Capitol Hill as far as I could see, there was a sea of people on the march for life. But the 40th March for Life was bittersweet. It was inspiring to see so many people, from so many states, marching on behalf of our unborn TONY MAGLIANO brothers’ and sisters’ right to be born. But it was sad to think that we have been marching for 40 years – with no end in sight. While progress has been made in many states to restrict abortion on demand, we are still a very long way from the day when every single unborn child will be allowed to see the light of day. Since the U.S. Supreme Court’s infamous 1973 decision of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, it has been

The March for Life in Washington, D.C., the Walk for Life West Coast, the Midwest March for Life and prolife demonstrations in various state capitals are shots in the prolife arm, but these one-day annual events are simply not enough. We need to march all year long, educating and lobbying for the full protection of every single unborn person’s life and dignity. And we need to regularly be present in large numbers at the abortion mills, peacefully and prayerfully denouncing the murders taking place within their walls. Another

way to keep marching is to sign up to receive legislative alerts from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It’s also important to contact your state Catholic conference and get on their legislative alert list. In her Nobel Peace Prize speech, Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, “I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a direct war, a direct killing – direct murder by the mother herself. ... Because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for me to kill you and you to kill me – there is nothing in between.” Indeed, abortion is war waged against the smallest and weakest members of humanity. War always inflicts the most suffering on the most vulnerable. Let’s continuously respond to the Lord’s call to be consistent peacemakers on behalf of all of our brothers and sisters – born and unborn. Let’s march for life all year long. Re “Drop the confrontational, negative attitude,” Letters, Jan. 25: Our Lord, Jesus Christ, who is God, is present body, blood, soul and divinity in the Blessed Sacrament (holy Eucharist). I spend time in the presence of God each week in the Blessed Sacrament to adore, love, praise, worship, give thanks and make reparation for my own sins and the sins of the world. There are two reasons why I do this: first, to keep company, which he wants, and second, to receive the grace from him that I need to go out into the world to see the holy face of Christ in every person I meet, be they rich, poor, black, brown, white or whatever. He inherited nothing but the disastrous wars of the past decade (with the subsequent trillions in costs, human and material), one of which continues unabated (no thanks to him), the poor decisions coming from Washington, D.C., as a whole; the unbridled influence of billions in lobbyists’ funds; the indifference of a body politic that prefers reality TV to reality; an uneducated ill-informed populace; the financial mismanagement of our economy; and the power of money over everything. Pelosi photo confusing The Jan. 11 article (“Catholics still largest Congress denomination”) regarding the religious makeup of our U.S. Congress is interesting. However, I did not understand why the photo showed Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Considering she opposes the stand of her church on such important issues as abortion, it does not seem appropriate. Can’t serve 2 masters Re “Rep. Pelosi is Catholic by the sacrament of baptism,” Letters, Jan. 25 (a response to “Why is Nancy Pelosi listed among Catholic (Congress) members?” Letters, Jan. 18: In my opinion, the church has delicately tightroped on this volatile issue. Can Catholic legislators get a “free pass” on their religious teachings if they claim that their support of issues that are in direct contradiction to the church’s teachings are merely reflective of the majority of their constituents? We have gone way too long in not having the church speak to the latter proposition. We need a frank and open dialogue about this issue.

What is worse is that – especially in Ms. Pelosi’s case – the majority of her constituents are Catholic! In this case, we open Pandora’s box completely because her Catholic constituents don’t seem to care if she supports such issues as samesex marriage, abortion rights, etc. This begs the further question: What is the church’s position when it constantly views elections in heavily Catholic districts where the electorate votes in direct opposition to the church’s teachings? When we see Catholic politician after Catholic politician line up to defend abortion and same-sex marriage, the faithful wonder: “When will the church draw the line in the sand”? The church should be on the front lines and speaking out. Instead, I view it as fearful because of our own recent scandals. This results in timid, unmoving responses. You cannot serve two masters. If Catholics are to be candidates for civil office, they should have the backbone to say to their prospective constituents, “I share the moral teachings of my church. I want to serve you in public office and I will cast my votes accordingly.” This issue is far from being resolved. I commend our archbishop for being a beacon of truth and leadership. We need our church’s teachings on these volatile social issues resonating in our Catholic high schools and colleges. If young people are not instilled with their church’s teachings, we are wasting our money on Catholic education. I only wish many of the faithful would wake up. Peter J. Fatooh San Francisco

Putting teeth back into faith, hope, and love

S

t. Paul famously tells the Corinthians that there are “three things that last: faith, hope, and love.” At this Pauline prompt, the Christian tradition has identified these three as the “theological” virtues, meaning those features that come as a unique gift from God and that serve as the structuring elements of a properly spiritual life. They are also today massively misunderstood, and this misunderstanding has contributed mightily to the dismissing of religion in many circles of our increasingly secularFATHER ROBERT ist society. The theological virtue BARRON that causes the most trouble is faith. This is because, in our culture besotted with the physical sciences, faith is construed as simple-mindedness, credulity and superstition – a poor pre-scientific substitute for real knowledge. As I have often argued before, authentic faith does not lie on the near side of reason; it doesn’t fall short of reason’s demands or lurk in a sub-rational or irrational darkness. Rather, real faith is a surrendering on the far side of reason, a leap into darkness to be sure, but a darkness beyond, not prior to, the illumination of the sciences and philosophy. This implies, of course, that the person of real faith reverences reason in all of its forms and refuses to accept the myth of a “war” between religion and science. Moreover, scientists who are religious believers as well – think of Georges Lem Maitre or George Coyne, or Stanley Jaki, or John Polkinghorne – readily accept the fact that reason is surrounded on all sides by something akin to faith. No scientist could get her work off the ground unless she accepted on faith the proposition that the world in its entirety is intelligible; and she

couldn’t move forward with her projects unless she accepted, without personal verification, the findings, research and experiments of thousands of others; and she couldn’t bring her studies to fulfillment unless she conceived of an intellectual goal that was not entirely available to her rational gaze. Therefore, the theological virtue of faith involves absolutely no sacrifice of the intellect.

Not the hope of conventional optimism

In the wake of an event such as the Newtown tragedy or the Christmas tsunami of 2004, many will wonder how Christians can possibly exercise the virtue of hope. The deaths of innocents at the hand of a madman or of hundreds of thousands through natural disaster would seem to preclude the possibility of hoping in a loving God who actively cares for the world that he has made. But hope, as G.K. Chesterton pointed out, has little to do with conventional optimism. The person of authentic hope is not compelled to hold that suffering, tragedy, conflict, and the deaths of innocent people will simply disappear through the intervention of God. Take a good hard look at the Bible. Every page of the Scriptures was written by someone who believed passionately in God, yet the Bible is filled with accounts of tragedies and disasters of all stripes: rape, murder, genocide, military collapse, political distress, etc. Jeremiah hoped in the Lord, and he watched the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians; David hoped in Yahweh, even as he was relentlessly pursued by Saul; Paul hoped in God, and he himself was mocked, tortured, and finally put to death. An optimist might think that God’s existence is irreconcilable with evil, but a person of hope never assents to such a naive proposition. To hope, in the theological sense, is to know that God finally is the sovereign master of the universe and hence that the drama of both nature and history is, at the end of the day and despite all darkness, a divine comedy. When the great English mystic Juliana of Norwich

said, “All will be well, all manner of things will be well,” she was not chirping optimistically about the disappearance of evil; she was exhibiting hope that God’s triumph is assured.

Not the love of ‘being a nice guy’

The third theological virtue is love, and like its counterparts, it too is often flattened out and trivialized. For many, to love is equivalent to being a nice guy, or in Flannery O’Connor’s formulation, “having a heart of gold.” In his great autobiography “The Seven Storey Mountain,” Thomas Merton remembered a professor of his in England who said that love was, essentially, “being a gentleman.” Now there is nothing in the world wrong with being a nice guy or having a heart of gold or being a gentlemen, but you can easily achieve all three of those states and not have love. For love is not really about fitting in and being friendly and getting along; it is willing the good of the other as other. It is truly wanting what is best for another person and then concretely doing something about it. And this means that real love can be as tough as nails or as disagreeable as a slap in the face – indeed, in Dostoevsky’s phrase, something “harsh and dreadful.” Compelling an addict to get help, or questioning a dysfunctional style of life, or calling someone to real conversion all involve the willing of the good of the other – and none will cause people to characterize you as a nice guy. This is why, by the way, the God who is love is not a kindly Santa Claus who magically makes troubles disappear. There are indeed three things that last: faith, hope, and love. A robust Christianity revolves around them. But we must be careful lest those terms lose their bite. Relativism remains abortion’s safeguard

I

had the privilege of speaking at the Arlington, Va., diocese March for Life youth rally the evening following the march. Some 6,000 zealous, young pro-lifers were there. The larger venue that day was the Verizon Center before the march began; 20,000 young people were there, with 13,000 more sent to an overflow event. Planned Parenthood doesn’t have an event for young people anywhere near this magnitude. Perhaps that’s because pro-choice America doesn’t offer anything for young people to CHRISTOPHER celebrate. STEFANICK Forty years after Roe v. Wade America is, no doubt, taking a turn toward life. According to a recent Knights of Columbus’ Marist poll, six in 10 Americans find abortion morally objectionable and 83 percent want to see significant abortion restrictions. And according to a Gallup poll, more than half of Americans think abortion is “morally wrong” versus just 39 percent who think it is “morally acceptable.” A recent Time magazine article reported that “at the state level, abortion-rights activists are unequivocally losing.” North Dakota, South Dakota, Mississippi and Arkansas are each down to only one operating abortion clinic. The 2,908 U.S. abortion mills in 1982 shrank to 1,793 in 2008 (the latest year data is available). Twenty-four states passed 92 abortion-regulating provisions in 2011.

Relativism a growing trend

But here’s the rub: While America is more clearly seeing the evil of abortion for what it is, America is still strongly relativist, and that trend is only growing. According to a Barna group study, 93 percent of teens do not believe in absolute truth. As long as they remain relativ-

ists, their support of abortion restrictions will only go so far. The same Knights of Columbus’ Marist poll that found a majority thought abortion was wrong also found that only about 10 percent of Americans believe abortion should always be illegal. It seems they don’t want to impose their morality on others through legislation – as if we had the power to each create our own personal, moral universes, or as if every piece of law isn’t the legislation of morality. Abortion became legal because of relativism, and relativism remains abortion’s safeguard. But when we look straight at a moral evil, the underbelly of relativism is revealed. Relativism simply doesn’t work in real life. After the events of 9/11, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani stood before world delegates at the United Nations and said: “We’re right and they’re wrong (to have attacked innocent people). It’s as simple as that. … The era of moral relativism … must come to an end. … There’s no moral way to sympathize with grossly immoral actions.” It’s impossible to look at burning bodies jumping from the Twin Towers and say “I can’t impose my view of right and wrong in this situation.” Giuliani returned a $10 million gift from a member of the Saudi royal family, given to help recovery from the tragedy. He had published a statement along with the gift that if U.S. foreign policies were different the tragedy might not have occurred. Giuliani wanted to send a message that there would be zero compromise with what happened. Circumstances can’t justify an evil like 9/11. Not even a little. Likewise, when we cut past the endless polemic and hyper focus on every possible circumstance that might surround an abortion and simply look at the act, we see something like 9/11 happening under our noses every day. Abortionist Dr. Crist shared in a testimony that it’s not uncommon to deliver children intact, feet first, hearts still beating. He went on to describe how he sometimes dismembers the child or crushes the head to stop the heart and get the fetus out (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, May 25, 2000).

If this act isn’t wrong, what is? If this shouldn’t be illegal, on what grounds should anything be illegal?

Failing to ask the hard questions

But relativists fail to ask those straight, hard questions. We consider ourselves more sophisticated if we can dwell in 100 shades of gray instead of seeing things in black and white like the pro-life fundamentalist. Relativism has turned us into a culture of death – a society of barbarians, though we’re high-class barbarians. As long as the horror occurs in a sterile hospital room and no one has to hear the baby scream or deal with the emotional wreckage of the mother (just feed her some pills) we’re perfectly comfortable with it. Worldwide since 1980 there have been well over 1.2 billion abortions. There have been more than 55 million lives snuffed out by abortion in the U.S. alone. In 2010 a full 40 percent of pregnancies in New York City ended in abortion, with 48 percent being aborted in the Bronx, and 60 percent of all pregnancies to black women. The national average is 22 percent of all pregnancies. To borrow words from President Obama delivered at Newton, Conn.: “We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change. We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. But that can’t be an excuse for inaction. Surely, we can do better than this. If there is even one step we can take to save another child … surely we have an obligation to try.” (The irony of the statement when seen in light of his abortion policy is so glaring it hardly needs mention.) I’m encouraged that this generation seems to be facing the fact that abortion is morally repugnant. They think abortion is wrong “for them.” I won’t break out the champagne until they take a break from relativism and can say that because it’s wrong, it’s wrong for everyone. The human temptations of our divine Lord

powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men.” Jesus is human, having taken on our human form and entered fully into the human experience. This includes the experience of temptation. We see this especially played out during his 40-day sojourn in the desert, when Satan played upon Jesus’ very humanity to draw him away from his mission as the son of God; when Jesus encountered temptations that go with having too much time on his hands in a remote location with little more to do than think, pray and grow hungry. Being alone would invariably intensify the temptations. After all, who would know? First, Jesus experienced hunger. While the temptation was to use his divine power to produce food, it was also a temptation to fulfill a basic human need. Such a temptation would naturally coincide with other human drives such as thirst, survival and our reproductive drives and instincts. To this, Jesus declares that we do not live solely on the attributes of our humanity, be they “bread,” drink or our procreative appetites, urges and orientations. Second, Jesus experiences temptation that plays upon basic pride. Being the divine son of God would naturally invite temptation to demonstrate his divine status; in this case by throwing himself off of the Temple. After all, being faithful to the person that he is, would it be wrong to simply do what he is capable of doing? Such a temptation would coincide with the human desire to “show

off ” as a matter of pride; or to behave in a way contrary to God’s purpose because “that’s the way I was made” or “I have to be faithful to who I am.” To this, Jesus gives an example of what it means to die to ourselves and live for the will of God in stalwart faith that needs no proofs. Third, Jesus experiences the temptation of expediency, aimed ultimately at disobedience. Jesus, the divine son, became human to save humanity by suffering and dying. Naturally that would come with the temptation to achieve the same goal in a more convenient, less painful way; in this case worshipping Satan, even for only a brief moment. After all, the same result, just a different means; alone in the desert, no one would see, and the goal would be achieved. To this, Jesus gives a reply that speaks strongly to the popular temptation that “the ends justify the means.” As we all have free will to act as we choose, we must nonetheless exercise our freedom within the parameters of obedience to God and his laws. With these three temptations Jesus identifies with our humanity in its totality. By descending from on high to be incarnate as a man, Jesus reasserted our humanity to the dignity of a race created in the image and likeness of God. As such, we are not only human. Rather, like Jesus, as God created us, we are human!

e’re only human!” So states a common phrase used by many people to downplay, or outright excuse, the otherwise scandalous behavior of either another or themselves. Whenever we see an admired celebrity fall from grace, overcome by scandal or caught in less than admirable behavior, there are always those who choose to soften the public blow by downplaying our very humanity – “they’re only human.” My response to such a comment is simply, “so is Jesus.” Of course, we cannot deny the divinity of Christ. But have we ever truly pondered those biblical passages that reflect upon the nature FATHER WILLIAM of the Incarnation? “He NICHOLAS emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness” (Philippians 2:7). “We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Prayer as sanity and balance

O

ur generative years are a marathon, not a sprint, and so it’s difficult to sustain graciousness, generosity and patience through the tiredness trials, and temptations that beset us through the years of our adult lives. All on our own, relying on willpower alone, we too often fatigue, get worn down,and compromise both our maturity and our discipleship. We need help from beyond, from somewhere even beyond the human supports that help bolster us. We need God’s help, strength from something beyond what’s human. FATHER RON We need prayer. ROLHEISER But too often we think of this in pious rather than realistic terms. Rarely do we grasp how much prayer is really a question of life and death for us. We need to pray not because God needs us to pray but because if we don’t pray we will never find any steadiness in our lives. Simply put, without prayer we will always be either too full of ourselves or too empty of energy, inflated or depressed. Why? What’s the anatomy of this? Prayer, as it is understood in all its best traditions, Christian and other, is meant to do two things for us, both at the same time: Prayer is meant to connect us to divine energy, even as it makes us aware that this energy is not our own, that it comes from elsewhere, and that we may never identify with it. Genuine prayer, in effect, fills us with divine energy and tells us at the same time that this energy isn’t our own; that it works through us, but that it’s not

us. To be healthy, we need both: If we lose connection to divine energy we drain of energy, depress, and feel empty. Conversely if we let divine energy flow into us but identify with it, somehow thinking that it is our own, we become grandiose, inflate with self-importance and arrogance, and become selfish and destructive.

who is full of creative energy, but is also full of grandiosity and ego; or, on the other hand, it makes for a man or woman who feels empty and flat and cannot radiate any positive energy. Without prayer we will forever be bouncing back and forth between grandiosity and depression.

Like in-flight refueling

Thus, unless I have real prayer in my life, if I’m sensitive, I will more than likely live inside a certain habitual depression, afraid that really accessing my energies and acting on them would lead others to think I’m full of myself. Since my sensitivity won’t allow that, I entomb many of my best energies on the unconscious premise that it’s better to be depressed than be accused of being an egoistic. But Jesus, himself, in his parable of the talents, warns us strongly about the price that’s to be paid for burying one’s talents, namely, emptiness, anger and lack of delight in our lives. Often times, if we check beneath our angers and jealousies, we will find there a buried talent that’s bitter because it has been suppressed. Virtue at the cost of suppressing our energies leads to bitterness. Conversely, if I don’t care if people think me an egotist and I don’t have real prayer in my life, I will let the divine energies flow freely through me, but I will identify with them as if they were my own, my talents, my gifts, and I will end up full of ego and grandiosity, with those around me wishing I was depressed! Without prayer we will always be either too empty of energy or too full of ourselves.

Robert Moore offers a very helpful image to illustrate this, that of a small fighter plane having to fuel-up in-flight. We have all seen video footage of a small fighter-jet fueling-up while still in the air. Hovering above it is a mother-plane with a huge reserve of fuel. The little plane has to fly close enough to the mother-plane so that a nozzle from the motherplane can connect with it so as to refill its fuel tank. If it doesn’t make this type of contact it runs out of fuel and soon crashes. Conversely, if it flies into the mother plane, identifies with it, it goes up in flames. Few images capture as astutely the importance of prayer in our lives. Without prayer, we will forever find ourselves vacillating between being too empty of energy or too full of ourselves. If we do not connect with divine energy we will run out of gas. If we do connect with divine energy but identify with it, we will destroy ourselves. Deep prayer is what energizes us and grounds us, both at the same time. We see this, for example, in a person like Mother Teresa, who was bursting with creative energy but was always very clear that this energy did not come from her, but from God, and she was merely a humble human instrument. Lack of real prayer makes for two kinds of antithesis to Mother Teresa: On the one hand, it makes for a wonderfully talented and energetic man or woman

Does weekday Mass count? The meaning of Easter duty

I am an old lady, and I have been privileged to attend daily Mass for most of my life. The various weekend liturgies in our area churches are most disconcerting to me, and I am considering a long leave of absence. My question is this: Can a weekday Mass be designated to fulfill the weekend obligation? (Clinton Township, Mich.) The Sunday Mass obligation is clear. The Catechism of the Catholic Church in No. 2181 states: “The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a FATHER serious reason (for example, KENNETH DOYLE illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.” From apostolic times, followers of Jesus have gathered on Sundays because that is the day of Christ’s resurrection, which is the core of our faith. The communal dimension of the celebration has the added value of strengthening the faith of participants. (St. John Chrysostom said, “You cannot pray at home as at church, where there is a great multitude, where exclamations are cried out to God as from one great heart, and where there is something more: the union of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity.”) Notice that the catechism envisions exceptional situations, where a pastor can lift the requirement for a sufficient reason. If, for example, someone who did not drive and lived a distance from a church could find a ride only on weekdays or if a person were afflicted by agoraphobia (fear of crowds or open spaces) and was comfortable only when there was a handful of people in attendance – in such circumstances a pastor might well lift the

Sunday obligation and encourage the person to go to Mass on a weekday instead. But your own situation seems to be different. You just don’t like the way the liturgy is celebrated in parishes in your area on Sundays. In my mind, that would not be enough of a reason to dispense you. I would suggest that you look for a Sunday Mass more suited to your taste. While the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, No. 40, says that “every care should be taken that singing by the ministers and the people not be absent in celebrations that occur on Sundays,” that same provision does allow for “due consideration for the cultures of the people.” So, you will probably find some Sunday Masses that are quieter than others. What ever happened to the Easter duty? Is it still mandatory for Catholics to receive the sacraments of reconciliation and the Eucharist at least once a year, during the Easter season, to remain in good standing? (city and state withheld) The church’s Code of Canon Law in No. 920 requires Catholics to receive holy Communion at least once a year, during the Easter season. (In the U.S., the Easter season is defined as running from the first Sunday of Lent through Trinity Sunday, which is the Sunday after Pentecost.) That same code in No. 989 says that “each member of the faithful is obliged to confess faithfully his or her grave sins at least once a year.” Note that this requirement applies only to “grave sins” and that no specific time frame is mentioned, other than annually. So, a person who is not conscious of any mortal sins is, technically, not required to go to confession at all. However, the code is quick to point out in No. 988.2 that it is recommended “to the Christian faithful that they also confess venial sins.” The catechism describes venial sins as “everyday faults.” In the sacrament of penance, one encounters directly the merciful, forgiving Christ. Received with reasonable frequency, the grace of this sacrament helps the penitent to make steady progress on the path to holiness.

Gun controls, support for mentally ill, protect the gift of life SISTERS OF SOCIAL SERVICE

The tragedy at Newton, Conn., was a wakeup call on gun violence occurring daily in our country – and the need for new laws and policies that finally end this source of pain and suffering. There is an equally pressing need to support robust care for those with mental illness and mental health programs for individuals and families of the perpetrators as well as the victims. We must demand action to address the growing use of violence as a means of entertainment. These actions are about protecting the most precious resource we have – the gift of life. Vice President Biden is supporting stronger, enforceable proposals on universal background checks as well as bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazine ammunition that the president could institute by executive action. State and local government leaders are proposing specific actions on school safety, mental health services and gun violence protection. We are called to join with concerned individuals, religious communities and congregations, educational institutions and political, economic and social organizations in a collaborative effort to have effective control of the AR-15 assault rifle. This is the same gun that was used in Newtown, the movie theater in Aurora, Colo., and the Christmas Eve shootings of four firefighters in upstate New York. As Sisters of Social service and associates we stand together as we speak out for the sacredness of life and declare our support for these legislative actions on a national, state and local level that will challenge the pervasive culture of violence in our country. Living our Catholic faith in the postmodern world First of two parts

T

he final document voted on at the Second Vatican Council was the pastoral constitution on “The Church in the Modern World.” That was in 1965. Then came 1968, a year of violent social unrest in many parts of the world. And so, in the 1970s, people began to speak of the “postmodern” world. And here we had just gotten used to the modern one! I would like to share some thoughts with you on living our Catholic faith in the postmodern world. To gain an understanding of postmodernism, we must begin with the modernism of which it is “post.” I would describe “the modern world” as an approach to understanding, emerging from the SALVATORE J. Enlightenment, which reCORDLEONE jects the ideas of revelation and divine authority, and maintains that only reason and science can provide reliable, objective information about the world. Religion is seen by some proponents of modernism as the inveterate foe of science, a personal, subjective attachment that might provide solace for those who profess faith, but which possesses no objective reality. Thoughtful Catholic authors, past and present, have ably demonstrated that the purported contradictions between faith and reason, or between religion and science, can be maintained only at the cost of incredible ignorance; but that is a price some are willing to pay to banish religious discourse to the margins of society.

Birth of postmodernism

Just as the advocates of modernism rejected a religious interpretation of reality, so, beginning in the 1970s, some began to question the absolute truth claims of the “modern world,” and postmodernism was born. What the modern world called progress or objective truth, postmodern thinkers began to describe as an explanation crafted by

They called this the “metanarrative” and urged that it be swept aside so that smaller, local narratives could have their day in the sun. The postmodern critique was especially attractive to those who had been marginalized, or were striving to be a voice for the marginalized, in society. It was a reaction to the hegemony of the “modern,” “scientific” claims to express absolute truth that led to the postmodernist assertion that all truth is relative and that each person’s perception of what is true, based on his or her experience, has validity. The situation is further complicated by the fact that these different worldviews exist side by side, and people move between them. Let me give two contemporary examples to illustrate my point. First, let us consider an axiom from the modern worldview: Science is the source of objective knowledge, and religion is hostile to science. Actually, the church herself invented the method of scientific inquiry, and did so in the Middle Ages, and it is precisely from here that the Western European culture developed and continues its influence today in the culture in which we live. But, for the sake of argument, let us grant the hypothesis that religion is hostile to science, and apply the hypothesis to the question of the unborn child. The most basic principles of biology maintain that an organism is the same entity at every stage of its development. If I observe a striped caterpillar, the scientist informs me that it is Danaus plexippus. At a later stage it will develop wings and I will recognize it as a monarch butterfly; but to say that it “becomes” something else would be very unscientific language. Yet when the church, defending the sanctity of human life, points out that a human being is a human being at every stage of his or her development, whether in the womb or outside it, the proponents of abortion abandon the scientific perspective and launch into pseudo-philosophical speculations about when human life “really”

begins and when “personhood” begins. So who is hostile to science?

Postmodernism and same-sex marriage

Now let us consider an example of the postmodern worldview: same-sex marriage. The argument here would be that the “dominant narrative” maintaining that marriage is a relationship which by its very nature can be entered into only by a man and woman does not take into account the experience of those with a same-sex attraction: Their experience says that they can form a deep, committed relationship with another person and that this, too, can rightly be called a marriage. My point here is not to argue the question of samesex marriage, but to note how in society today the process moves quickly through three stages: 1) challenging the traditional understanding of marriage on the basis of personal experience; 2) assuming that it is simply a fact that same-sex marriage is the same as traditional marriage; 3) oppressing anyone who dares to disagree. Advocates of same-sex marriage claim the equality of different points of view until they get control of power, and then enforce their view on everyone else, all the while continuing to claim that there is no such thing as objective truth. And so, even though the Catholic Church runs extremely effective adoption programs, she must be forbidden to do so because she challenges the now-dominant narrative of same-sex marriage. Thus, those who pride themselves on being objective and scientific can readily switch channels when science becomes inconvenient, and yesterday’s marginal group asking for toleration can become incredibly intolerant once it gains the upper hand. And we, who espouse a religious worldview, have to be careful, because we, too, can shift gears quite easily and unconsciously. The human condition is disintegrated (we would say fallen), and the categories of “religious,” “modern,” and “postmodern” are not hermetically sealed compartments. How are we to integrate these various currents in our own lives, and interact with others who identify as modern or postmodern? Archbishop Cordileone gave this talk at the Brompton Oratory, London, England, Jan. 17. The second part will appear in the Feb. 22 issue.

In praise of Marian hymns that move

hile the church has in various councils and declarations strived to define the nature and significance of Mary in the divine plan, for the vast majority of Catholics it was not papal statements but the traditions of art, story, poetry and, most especially music, that “told us” who Mary was. Of the many Marian hymn texts found in current hymnals, one of the most popular is Roland Palmer’s “Sing of Mary,” in which we hear Mary described as “pure and lowly, virgin mother undefiled.” Though such language ROB GRANT does recount the church’s teachings about Mary’s virginity and immaculate conception, do they tell us anything about who she really was? Do the traditional songs we sing about Mary show us the exceptionally aware and extraordinarily empowered teenage girl who discerns in herself a calling from God to accomplish an enormously challenging task? Do the lyrics reveal a young woman who, discovering she is unmarried and pregnant, while eschewing the insulting categorizations of being “defiled” or “undefiled,” simply sees in this pregnancy the will of God? Is she celebrated as the first teacher of the boy Jesus, his constant comrade as he walks his dangerous road to Jerusalem, and the last companion by his side at Calvary? Is she the brilliant example of a life lived brazenly and offered to us as a challenge to imitate that courage and conviction?

Knowing her faith, her courage, her fortitude and her compassion, what are we going to do about it? How will our lives bring to the world the enfleshment of Christ and the building of the kingdom in the brazen way that hers did?” Any “religious” experience is only as good as the action that follows from it. Maybe, if we were to sing less of Mary’s purity and more of her brazen boldness in the face of life’s dirty, messy challenges, whether we’re the teenage girl or the retired plumber, we’d actually have a more practical model of sanctity to emulate. The pope will then live in the cloister, called the Mater Ecclesia monastery, and dedicate his time to prayer and reflection, the Vatican spokesman said. It was likely the pope would keep writing, he added, since the pope has mentioned many times that he has wanted to spend more time dedicated to study and prayer. When asked if there would be any confusion over leadership or a schism were a possibility, Father Lombardi said he believes the pope “had no fear of this” happening because he clearly demonstrated his desire to step down and no longer be pope or retain any papal authority. “I think in no way is there any risk of confusion or division” in this respect, he said. The pope, who is past the age allowed a cardinal to vote for a new pope, will obviously not be part of the conclave that will convene to elect his successor, he added. He is not likely to play any role in the “interregnum” or time between popes because “there is no role for a predecessor pope” during this period, the priest said. The Jesuit priest said a “sede vacante” usually lasts less than a month, and that it was more than likely a new pope would be elected in time to lead the full schedule of Holy Week and Easter liturgies. Cardinal Sodano, who was one of the many cardinals present during the pope’s announcement, addressed the pope, telling him the news left them with “a sense of loss, almost completely incredulous.” However, it was obvious that his decision was based on a “great affection” for the well-being of the church, the cardinal said. Father Lombardi said being a pope today is “much more fast-moving, more demanding” than it was in the past with an almost nonstop full schedule of public and private events and liturgical celebrations.

When asked whether the pope had any medical illnesses or bouts of depression that may have prompted his resignation, Father Lombardi said the pope was “absolutely not” depressed and possessed

His resignation under pressure helped end the Great Western Schism. a remarkable “spiritual serenity” and composure despite the many difficult moments he has had to face as pope. The Vatican spokesman also said he was not aware of any medical illness that would have caused the pope to step down, rather it was due to a “normal” deterioration of physical and mental strength that comes with old age. Pope Benedict often has seemed tired, with large, dark circles under his eyes during especially busy periods of public liturgies and audiences. In October 2011, he began riding a mobile platform in liturgical processions. At the time, Father Lombardi said it was “solely to lighten the burden” of processions, although he acknowledged the pope had been experiencing the kind of joint pain normal for a man his age. Just a few months later, the pope began using a cane to walk, although it often looks like he is carrying it, not relying on it, for support. However, just in the past few months when celebrating Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, the pope no longer walks all the way around the altar when using incense at the beginning of Mass; instead he raises the thurible only from the back of the altar. And at

the end of a Mass Feb. 2, the pope lost his grip on his crosier; as it fell, Msgr. Guido Marini, the papal master of liturgical ceremonies, caught it. The option of a pope to resign is explicitly written into the Code of Canon Law. It says a pope may step down, but stipulates that the decision must be made freely and “duly manifested.” No one needs to formally accept a pope’s resignation for it to be valid. The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII in 1415. Pope Benedict had long said it would be appropriate for a pope to resign for the good of the church if the pontiff felt he were unable to physically bear the burden of the papacy. In his book-length interview, “The Light of the World,” with German journalist Peter Seewald, the pope said, “If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right and, under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign.”

Determined to persevere

The pope told the author that it was important, however, that the pope “must not run away” and “must stand fast and endure” any difficult situations that are facing the church. For that reason, he was not thinking of resigning in 2010 – the year the interviews were conducted. “One can resign at a peaceful moment or when one simply cannot go on,” the pope had said. Before ending his remarks during the consistory, Pope Benedict told the cardinals: “I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the holy church to the care of our supreme pastor, our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the cardinal fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new supreme pontiff.” The pope said, “I wish to also devotedly serve the holy church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.” Father Lombardi said he felt “great admiration” for the pope’s “great courage” and “freedom of spirit” in making this decision. The spokesman said it shows the pope is not only fully aware of the great responsibilities involved in leading the universal church, but his hopes that “the ministry of the church be carried out the best way” possible.

Meanwhile, the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, is charged with making preparations for a conclave to elect a new pope, and the cardinals must set the time for the conclave to start. The word conclave comes from Latin, meaning literally “with key,” and reflects the previous tradition of locking the cardinals in an area where they would spend day and night until the new pope’s election. On the day set for entry into the conclave, the cardinal-electors assemble in St. Peter’s Basilica to attend morning Mass. In the afternoon, they walk in procession to the Sistine Chapel, located just to the north of St. Peter’s. The voting may begin that afternoon with one ballot; on following days, normally two ballots are held in the morning and two in the afternoon. A pope is elected when he obtains a two-thirds majority, reflecting a change Pope Benedict established in 2007 that effectively undid a more flexible procedure introduced by Blessed John Paul. According to the new rule, the twothirds-majority rule cannot be set aside even when cardinal-electors are at an impasse. All voting is secret, in writing, on

paper ballots, which are deposited in a receptacle by each elector, then counted. Ballots are taken to any cardinals residing at the Domus Sanctae Marthae but who are too sick to come to the Sistine Chapel. After each morning and afternoon round of voting, the ballots are burned. By tradition but not by rule, they are burned with special chemicals to produce the black smoke signifying an inconclusive vote, or white smoke if a new pope was elected. Due to confusion in the past as people in St. Peter’s Square tried to determine what color smoke was coming out of the Sistine Chapel smokestack, the basilica’s bell is also rung to confirm a successful election. Once a new pope has been elected, he is asked if he accepts the office – he is encouraged but not bound to do so by the current rules – and is asked to choose a name. Traditionally, the senior member of the cardinal deacons – currently Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, 69 – announces the successful election results from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. After the new pope has donned papal robes, he proceeds to the balcony, where he greets the public and offers his first blessing. At a time designated by the pope, usually a few days later, he officially opens his ministry with an investiture Mass at St. Peter’s.

Cardinal Dolan ‘startled’

Cardinal Dolan was interviewed on the NBC’s “Today” show early Feb. 11 where he said he was as “startled as the rest of you” about the news. Washington Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl was similarly talking about the pope’s decision on local news radio WTOP before 8 a.m. The cardinal said he was “very much surprised” by the announcement, noting that he had seen the pope less than a month ago and there was no indication of a possible resignation. What does not surprise the cardinal, though, is that the pope was able to make such a decision. “I don’t think we should be surprised,” he said, that when the pope realized he didn’t “have the strength to continue” his role he had “the humility and courage” to act on it. Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond of New Orleans also expressed his “great deal of admiration” for the pope, said he appreciated the pontiff ’s “recognition of the health issues he is facing” and admired “his humility in asking the cardinals to come together in prayer to select his successor.” In Chicago, Cardinal Francis E. George echoed his fellow U.S. prelates in saying the pontiff always has

put “the will of God for the good of the church before every other consideration” and “that same resoluteness of purpose” is evident in his decision to resign. Pope Benedict “has taught with clarity and charity what God has revealed to the world in Christ; he has handed on the apostolic faith; he has loved all of God’s people with all his heart,” the cardinal said in a statement. “He has now shown great courage in deciding, after prayer and soul-searching, to resign his office.” Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Ky., said he was surprised “along with the rest of the world” about the resignation and was “touched by his humble admission of the strength necessary to carry on this ministry of Christ.” “This is a decision that reflects Pope Benedict’s stewardship of his office and is a sign of his deep humility,” he said. Cardinal Wuerl said that the resignation of a pope for health reasons is a new situation, “but the work of the church” will remain the same. The cardinal said he would not speculate on the identity of the next pope, but he expected Pope Benedict’s successor to “be a person of great continuity” who would carry forth the church’s doctrines and spiritual traditions, which he said are the bedrock of the Catholic faith.

STANFORD TO OFFER VATICAN II SYMPOSIUM

The “Quest for Six” would not have been a possibility without the vision of San Francisco 49ers founder, Anthony J. “Tony” Morabito. The former St. Ignatius halfback and Santa Clara University graduate with some of his lumber business partners and his brother Vic, gave San Francisco its first professional major league team. In 1946, the 49ers became charter members of the short-lived All America Football Conference and later merged into the NFL in 1950. Tony was passionately involved with his beloved 49ers, putting together teams that featured great names such as quarterback Y. A. Tittle, running back Hugh McElhenny and tackle Bob St. Clair. On Oct. 27, 1957, Tony was watching his 49ers trail the Chicago Bears 17–7 at Kezar Stadium when his heart gave out. The 49ers

The Morabito crypt won the game 21-17. Tony and his brother, Victor, who died in 1964, are laid to rest in Holy Cross Mausoleum. Cemetery Corner is an occasional feature highlighting the ministry of the archdiocese’s Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma.

A one-day symposium, “The Legacy of Vatican II: Personal Reflections,” and a spring quarter course, “Vatican II: Catholicism Meets Modernity,” are the main ways Stanford University is observing the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). The March 9 symposium on the third floor of the Old Union on the Stanford campus will feature three keynote speakers. Deacon Bill Ditewig will discuss the historical context of the council; San Francisco Archbishop Emeritus John R. Quinn will discuss church structure and governance; and Tom Fox, the publisher of National Catholic Reporter, will discuss the role of the laity post-council. This symposium is open to the public free of charge. Stanford’s Religious Studies Department is offering the course during the spring quarter, April 1-June 3, Mondays 7-9 p.m. at Piggott Hall. The

course aims for a critical understanding and appraisal of Vatican II, situating it within its historical context and analyzing its significance, unfinished agenda and points of controversy. Scholars include Father Stephen Schloesser, SJ, of Loyola University, Chicago; interreligious expert Catherine Cornille of Boston College; Paul Lakeland of Fairfield University; Bryan Massingale of Marquette University; and local scholars, including Santa Clara’s University’s Catherine Murphy, Kristin Heyer, Jerome Baggett and David DeCosse, many of whom will interact with Stanford faculty including David Kennedy, Steven Weitzman Al Gelpi and others. The public is welcome at all lectures with the permission of the instructor, Father Paul Crowley, SJ. Most lectures from the course and the symposium will be videotaped and available on the Stanford Catholic Community website, stanford. catholic.edu.

Archbishop Riordan High School (ARHS) is a Catholic all male San Francisco Archdiocesan High School, founded in 1949. ARHS is sponsored by the Society of Mary (Marianist). Qualifications and Requirements:

The Congregational office of the Sisters of the Presentation seeks a Director of Development and Alumnae Relations to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate the fundraising activities and communication outreach to the Congregation’s publics; and maintain and cultivate relationships with the former students of Presentation schools. Successful candidates will have a bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university; two years’ experience in fundraising and strategic planning, preferably in a nonprofit setting; excellent verbal and writing skills; demonstrated experience in management; and familiarity and readiness in technology, including use of social networking tools. Experience in social networking media and working in a faith-based environment is preferred.
