Ecumenical group fears HHS mandate will create ‘immense injustice’ to needy

PITTSBURGH (CNS) – The Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania, one of the largest regional ecumenical agencies in the United States, urged the Obama administration to broaden the religious exemption in the federal government’s mandate requiring that most health plans cover the cost of contraception, sterilization and some drugs that can induce abortion. As it stands now, religious employers who are morally opposed to such coverage may be forced to shut down various ministries, including outreach to the poor, which would result in an “immense injustice” to those in need, the organization said in a statement. It said the mandate violates the Constitution’s guarantee of religious freedom and also called “health care for all” a “moral imperative.” The statement, released April 13 at a news conference at the organization’s headquarters in Pittsburgh, was signed by the leaders of several church bodies, including the Catholic Church. “Our deep concern over this mandate does not arise from the varying convictions we have on the moral content of this mandate, but from our common commitment to the right of religious freedom that all people of faith expect to enjoy in this country,” the statement said. “The Constitution of the United States guarantees every religious institution and its affiliated bodies the inalienable right to define its own identity and ministries and to practice its own beliefs, not just its freedom of worship,” it added. The signatories included Bishops David A. Zubik and Lawrence E. Brand, who head, respectively, the Latinrite dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg and Father Eugene Yackanich, interim administrator of the Byzantine Archeparchy of Pittsburgh. ‘We cannot just stand by and watch’ Filipino priest who opposes mine to protect indigenous people’s land wins Goldman prize By George Raine The indigenous people of Mindoro, the seventhlargest island in the Philippines, eke out a living growing upland rice, root crops and bananas, but the crops are grown on their ancestral land and to destroy it by way of mining for metal would destroy them. Imagine the harm toxic waste would do, wending its way into Mindoro’s water resources and forests, dumping into the sea to kill the fishermen’s catch. This is the nightmare of Father Edwin Gariguez, a Catholic priest for the island’s mission who has led a dogged opposition to a Norwegian company’s ambitious plans to mine nickel. The work has led, at least temporarily, to the suspension of the developer’s permit and thwarted the project. For his determination and courage – he has earned a place on a list of “dissident terrorists” drawn up by the military in the Philippines – Father Gariguez on April 16 was one of six recipients of the prestigious

2012 Goldman Environmental Prize, awarded in San Francisco. The awards, established in 1989 by the late San Francisco civic leaders and philanthropists Richard and Rhoda Goldman, are given to, as prize administers note, “a group of fearless emerging leaders working against all odds to protect the environment and their communities.” Father Gariguez’ campaign to protect Mindoro Island’s biodiversity and its indigenous people, known as the Mangyan, began only a few years after his ordination in 1993. He had come from Quezon Province on the Island of Luzon. He asked for the Mindoro assignment, as pastor of the Mangyan Mission Church, seeing it as an opportunity and a challenge. The challenge came in spades when Intex Resources of Norway began laying plans to mine nickel, abundant in the island’s soil. He told the story during an interview in San Francisco prior to receiving the prize. He said Intex – which did not respond to an email from Catholic San Francisco GOLDMAN, page 4

Alessandro • Charity is also ringing in the hearts of Franco students at Star of the Sea School where during the last six years the school’s Pennies for Patients campaign has raised more than $15,000. “All those boxes, bags, and jars of pennies have added up to a lot of good,” said second grade teacher, Cindy Conway, who oversees the good work, and who has been raising money for leukemia cure progress for 10 years. “The money that we have raised has helped doctors research new medicines, helped patients pay for drugs, and given people hope that one day a cure will be found.” • Church of the Good Shepherd parishioners prayed a rosary for life at a San Mateo Planned Parenthood facility on Palm Sunday. Gabriel Project parish ‘angels’ watch over troubled moms, families A teen whose baby united a family that had pressed her to abort him, a young woman whose toddler returned home from foster care just in time for Christmas, an abandoned new mom whose infant opened the door to a loving friendship – all believe the Gabriel Project “angels” who took them under their wing can work miracles. For their part, volunteers in the nationwide, parishbased program named after the bearer of the good news of Christ’s birth to Mary attest that making a difference in the lives of others has changed their own. Many participants in the Gabriel Project retain close ties long after completing their official mission of bringing comfort, consolation and care to troubled mothersto-be during their pregnancy. “I cannot begin to describe how incredibly fulfilling this ministry is,” said Patsy Gonzalez of Redwood City, an “angel” at Church of the Nativity Parish in Menlo Park. Staying in touch, she was asked to be the godmother of one of the newborns she supported and was joined on a recent Walk for Life West Coast by the child’s grandmother, who made the initial contact in early 2010. At the time she first called the Gabriel Project hotline, Phyllis Palmer, a hospice nurse in San Mateo, was desperately seeking support for her 15-year-old pregnant daughter, who wanted to have and keep her baby despite adamant opposition from her father and stepparents. “Patsy was always there to talk about (my) concerns and to stand by me,” Palmer said. Her daughter, Alison Lynch, now 17, sees Gonzalez as a cornerstone in the foundation of love and faith she’s convinced will help her son James defy the discouraging odds facing most babies born to teenagers. “It was God’s grace and the Holy Spirit that brought Patsy into our lives,” said Lynch, who plans to pursue paralegal studies after graduating from Peninsula Continuation High School in San Bruno on May 31. Her son’s birth on Sept. 24, 2010, transformed her life and family dynamics. “Even my father, who wanted nothing to do with me when I refused to have an abortion, has come around and has a wonderful relationship with James, carrying his picture and acting the proud grandpa,” Lynch said. Having served as a guide on this “very rocky journey,” Gonzalez considers her involvement “a true blessing” and Palmer’s friendship “a great gift.” Her sentiments resound with other “angels” in the 13 Archdiocese of San Francisco parishes participating in the project born of a similar program started by a Houston priest in the wake of the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. “I’ve worked with a lot of ministries and social justice causes, but this one has such an amazing impact, it’s indescribable,” said Mila Ramirez, who coordinates the

10 “angels” and assistant “angels” at St. Andrew Parish in Daly City. “It’s by far the most hands-on.” In one case, Ramirez and her team took turns babysitting a baby for five months so his mom, a 29-year-old with two other children who had been set on terminating the pregnancy, could work. The young woman’s mother had asked the “angels” to pray that her daughter have a change of heart. They did, and she had. Matthias was born Aug. 19, 2011. “He’s wonderful and cute, robust, healthy and handsome and loves to be cuddled,” said Helen Reguindin of Daly City, a member of the Gabriel Project at St. Andrew who helped care for the baby for two months. “I can’t think of a better way to spread the love than to give our time and effort in such a fulfilling way.” Thanks to that time and effort, Marlyn Fuentes, 33, of Daly City got “the best Christmas present of my life” last year – her 2-year-old son Patrick, who had been taken away by social services 11 months earlier when the family became homeless. Ramirez worked tirelessly to secure them shelter and provide guidance that brought the little boy home on Dec. 19 and his sister Judith Antonielli into the world two months later. “They never imagined there would be people who would help them the way we did,” Ramirez said. “That’s restored their confidence in God and in people.” The children’s father was baptized Catholic on Easter Sunday. The couple plans to wed on July 14 in a religious

A lasting friendship also developed between Dawn Scannell of Our Lady of Loretto and St. Anthony of Padua in Novato and Eva Ugarte, a single mom deserted by her now 6-month-old daughter’s father when he learned of the pregnancy. Ugarte felt “desperate, hopeless and totally alone” when she glimpsed a “Gabriel Project” sign through her tears as she walked by St. Anthony Church. One phone call and a couple meetings later, she had rent money for the next month, piles of baby items, a maternity wardrobe and a blossoming relationship with her “angel.” By the time Gianna was born Sept. 13, 2011, Scannell had fully opened up her heart and home to Ugarte, her baby and her 7-year-old daughter Natalia from a previous marriage. She invited the trio to holiday dinners, family functions, the movies and a celebration for Ugarte’s 26th birthday. Such blessings have rekindled Ugarte’s faith in God and her future. She is returning to the Catholic Church and to school to earn a degree in phlebotomy, the drawing of blood samples. “Because of the Gabriel Project,” Ugarte said, “I have hope, confidence and, most special of all, an ‘angel’ without whom all of this would be impossible.” For more information on the program, call (415) 6145551 or email sfgabrielproject@gmail.com.

‘Oompah’ band for pope’s 85th birthday VATICAN CITY) – Pope Benedict XVI celebrated his 85th birthday with guests who treated him to Bavarian “oompah” music and folk dancing in the apostolic palace. Bavarian bishops, minister-president of Bavaria – Horst Seehofer, and a 150-person regional government delegation visited the pope April 16 in the Vatican’s Clementine Hall. They were accompanied by a small Bavarian band, three female singers and 10 children who danced the skirt-swirling, shoestomping, thigh-slapping “Schuhplattler” before the pope. In his address to the pope, Seehofer said Bavaria was still the most-Catholic region in Germany and that it was still common to find the crucifix hung in public schools and small roadside shrines maintained throughout

WASHINGTON – A Catholic Democratic House member has urged New York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan to call on Congress to prioritize the needs of poor and vulnerable Americans as the 2013 federal budget is debated. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., ranking Democrat on the labor, health and human ser-
vices and education subcommittee, suggested in an interview with Catholic News Service April 16 that the U.S. bishops, and Cardinal Dolan in particular, might do well to open a public campaign to protect programs aiding the country’s poor. DeLauro outlined her concerns in an April 13 letter to Cardinal Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The 22-year member of Congress cited the recent passage in the House of Representatives of the 2013 budget resolution that was written by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis. She said the plan would be devastating to millions of out-of-work and low-income Americans. Cardinal Dolan had no immediate response to the letter. New York archdiocesan spokesman Joseph Zwilling told CNS the afternoon of April 16 he was not certain the cardinal had seen the letter yet. DeLauro told CNS that the budget deserved as much attention from Cardinal Dolan and the nation’s bishops as that being given in a two-week campaign in support of religious freedom June 21-July 4. The bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty announced the “fortnight for freedom” April 12, saying American Catholics must resist unjust laws “as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith.” – Catholic News Service
the fisher folks who will be affected by this mining operation,” said Father Gariguez. “So we cannot just stand by and watch,” he added. “It is part of our prophetic mission, to denounce injustices, even if we might offend people in business.” Here’s his Gospel inspiration, he said, Father Edwin quoting Matthew 25: Gariguez “And I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.” First, Father Gariguez co-founded a coalition of Mindoro residents, elected officials, civil society groups, church leaders and indigenous people who oppose mining on the island, called the Alliance Against Mining. Despite its name, the group is not wholly opposed to mining per se, but believes there must be measures
to protect the environment and the rights of communities of indigenous people, and ensure a fair distribution of economic benefits. As is, that’s not in place on Mindoro, he said. Under the current mining proposal and law in the Philippines – in addition to environmental hazards – the developer would pay no royalties to the Philippines, only a 2 percent excise tax. “We are giving our minerals for free,” said Father Gariguez, who argues that “the right of the people should take precedence over corporate greed.” The struggle has become dangerous. At least one homicide, of a Protestant church leader who was a coalition member, gunned down on the steps of his church, has been linked at least in the minds of some to promining forces opposed to the coalition. An 11-day hunger strike Father Gariguez led in 2009 was successful, and forced the federal Department of Environment and
Natural Resources to promise it would investigate the mine’s alleged environmental and social violations, and the department went on to revoke the company’s license. A review is still under way. In addition, Father Gariguez took the fight to Europe, where he addressed the Norwegian parliament and Intex shareholders, and filed a complaint with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Devleopment. Intex Resources has promised a payoff for Mindoro, saying some 10,000 people would be employed as the mine is built, while another 2,000 would have permanent jobs during operations, in addition to other benefits. Some of the indigenous people have been co-opted by the mining company, said Father Gariguez, attracted to the money, but most leaders are with him, he said. “Because they know that the land is what they really have for life,” he said. “Land is life for them, and without the land they cannot live.”
Chinese bishops detained HONG KONG – Two Chinese bishops not recognized by the government were freed by authorities on Easter, church sources told the Asian church news agency UCA News. Coadjutor Bishop Peter Shao Zhumin of Wenzhou, in eastern Zhejiang province, and Bishop Peter Jin Lugang of Nanyang, in central Henan province, were detained, respectively, for four weeks and for four days. Bishop Jin was taken away in early April by officials wanting to prevent him from celebrating the chrism Mass, which symbolizes a bishop’s communion with his clergy, and other Easter liturgies. Bishop Shao was detained March 19. Church sources said his detention included “brainwashing” on the country’s religious policies.
Plea in Sudan crisis
Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Adwok Kur of Khartoum, Sudan, said in an email to Catholic News Service that tensions between Sudan and South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, could be defused if the United Nations and the African Union would mediate the differences and attempt to determine the proper border between the two countries. Bishop Adwok, who is from the South, said civilians in the disputed area around Heglig, a small town in Southern Kordofan state on the edge of rich oil fields, are being victimized by attacks from both sides. Dan Griffin, Sudan adviser for the U.S. bishops’ Catholic Relief Services, told CNS April 17 that fears are very real that a “looming disaster” exists and that the current border conflict could give rise to a new war. “We need to help the church with its voice and advocacy,” he said.

Catholics urged to resist unjust laws, join in ‘fortnight for freedom’ WASHINGTON (CNS) – American Catholics must resist unjust laws “as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith,” a committee of the U.S. bishops said in a new statement on religious liberty. Titled “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty,” the 12-page statement by the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty also calls for “a fortnight for freedom” from June 21, the vigil of the feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, to July 4, U.S. Independence Day. “This special period of prayer, study, catechesis and public action would emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty,” the committee said. “Dioceses and parishes around the country could choose a date in that period for special events that would constitute a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty.” Made public April 12, the document was approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Administrative Committee during its March meeting for publication as a committee statement. The ad hoc committee opened its statement with several “concrete examples” of recent threats to religious liberty, saying that “this is not a theological or legal dispute without real-world consequences.” Cited first was the Department of Health and Human Services’ mandate that most health plans must include contraception, sterilization and some abortion-inducing drugs free of charge, even if the employer is morally opposed to such services. “In an unprecedented way, the federal government will both force religious institutions to facilitate and fund a product contrary to their own moral teaching and purport to define which religious institutions are ‘religious enough’ to merit protection of their religious liberty,” the statement said. “These features of the ‘preventive services’ mandate amount to an unjust law.” Among other examples of “religious liberty under attack” the bishops named: – Immigration laws in Alabama and other states that “forbid what the government deems ‘harboring’ of undocumented immigrants – and what the church deems Christian charity and pastoral care to those immigrants.” – An attempt by the Connecticut Legislature in 2009 to restructure Catholic parishes. – Discrimination against Christian students on college campuses. – Government actions in Boston, San Francisco, the District of Columbia and the state of Illinois that have “driven local Catholic Charities out of the business of providing adoption or foster care services” because the agencies would not place children with same-sex or unmarried heterosexual couples. – A New York City rule that bars small church congregations from renting public schools on weekends for worship services, while allowing such rentals by nonreligious groups. – Changes in federal contracts for human trafficking grants that require Catholic agencies “to refer for contraceptive and abortion services in violation of Catholic teaching.” The statement quotes the Founding Fathers and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to bolster its arguments. Rev. King, writing from jail in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963, described an unjust law as one “that is out of harmony with the moral law,” and said he agreed with St. Augustine that “an unjust law is no law at all.” “An unjust law cannot be obeyed,” the bishops’ statement said. “In the face of an unjust law, an accommodation is not to be sought, especially by resorting to equivocal words and deceptive practices. “If we face today the prospect of unjust laws, then Catholics in America, in solidarity with our fellow citizens, must have the courage not to obey them,” it added. “No American desires this. No Catholic welcomes it. But if it should fall upon us, we must discharge it as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith.”

The bishops also distinguished between conscientious objection and an unjust law. “Conscientious objection permits some relief to those who object to a just law for reasons of conscience – conscription being the most well-known example,” the committee said. “An unjust law is ‘no law at all.’ It cannot be obeyed, and therefore one does not seek relief from it, but rather its repeal.” The statement also raised the issue of religious freedom abroad and said “the age of martyrdom has not passed.” “Assassinations, bombings of churches, torching of orphanages – these are only the most violent attacks Christians have suffered because of their faith in Jesus Christ,” the bishops said. “It is our task to strengthen religious liberty at home, ... so that we might defend it more vigorously abroad.” The statement called on “American foreign policy, as well as the vast international network of Catholic agencies” to make “the promotion of religious liberty an ongoing and urgent priority.” The bishops assigned special responsibility for advancing religious freedom to several groups: – Those who hold public office must “protect and defend those fundamental liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights,” regardless of their political party. – Leaders of Catholic hospitals, universities and social service agencies “who may be forced to choose between the good works we do by faith, and fidelity to that faith itself” were encouraged to “hold firm, to stand fast and to insist upon what belongs to you by right as Catholics and Americans.” – Priests must offer “a catechesis on religious liberty

Less than 78 hours after returning from Havana to Rome, the presumably still-jet-lagged pope was offering Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square, the first celebration in his busiest week of the liturgical year. No clear-eyed observer can deny that Pope Benedict is unusually robust for his age. He is reportedly at work on the third volume of his bestselling “Jesus of Nazareth” series and is presumed to be writing at least one encyclical: on the theological virtue of faith, to follow his works on charity (“Deus Caritas Est”) and hope (“Spe Salvi”). The pope will be traveling to Lebanon this September, and the Vatican has done nothing to discourage the widespread assumption that he will follow established papal precedent by attending World Youth Day celebrations next summer in Rio de Janeiro. As the pope told former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, also 85, at a meeting in Havana in March: “Yes, I’m old, but I can still carry out my duties.” Pope Benedict’s vitality is strikingly clear when one compares his physical and mental state with that of his predecessor. The current pontiff is already older than Blessed John Paul II was when he died in 2005, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease and other ailments. The contrast between the two men is especially significant when one considers that Blessed John Paul seriously considered resigning on at least two occasions, his 75th and

Concluding his homily at Blessed John Paul’s beatification Mass last May, Pope Benedict paid a personal tribute to his predecessor’s “witness in suffering.” “The Lord gradually stripped him of everything,” Pope Benedict recalled, “yet he remained ever a ‘rock,’ as Christ desired. ... In this way he lived out in an extraordinary way the vocation of every priest and bishop to become completely one with Jesus, whom he daily receives and offers in the church.”

Irish survey finds gap between church teaching, self-identified Catholics DUBLIN (CNS) – Three out of four Irish who identified themselves as Catholics find the church’s teaching on sexuality “irrelevant,” according to new research published by the Association of Catholic Priests. The survey – conducted by the research association Amarach – also showed that almost 90 percent of those surveyed believe that divorced or separated Catholics in a stable second relationship ought to be able to receive Communion at Mass. Under church law, divorced and remarried Catholics who have received an annulment may receive Communion. The figures were compiled from a sample of 1,000 Catholics and, according to researchers, have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. According to the results, 35 percent of those surveyed attend Mass at least once a week; 51 percent attend at least once a month. Five percent of Irish who identify themselves as Catholics never attend Mass. The Association of Catholic Priests, which represents about 20 percent of Ireland’s priests, is campaigning for changes in the church. Its members maintain that they are mainstream church and not dissidents; their founder, Redemptorist Father Tony Flannery, has been asked by the Vatican to quit writing for his order’s monthly magazine. The survey appeared to reveal a wide disparity between what the church teaches and what the self-identified Catholics believe. Eighty-seven percent disagreed with church teaching on an unmarried priesthood and said they believed that priests ought to be allowed to get married, while 77 percent said the church should admit women to the priesthood. When asked “to what extent do you agree with the Catholic Church’s teaching that any sexual expression of love between a gay couple is immoral,” 61 percent said they disagreed while 18 percent of those surveyed believed homosexual acts to be immoral. Two out of three surveyed want a greater role in choosing their bishop. The survey results were released April 12. One week earlier, during his Holy Thursday Mass, Pope Benedict XVI cautioned against dissent from church teaching, saying it was not a legitimate path to reform. In March, the report of an apostolic visitation to the Irish Catholic Church in the aftermath of clergy sex abuse scandals criticized what it described as a “fairly widespread” tendency among Irish priests, religious and laypeople to dissent from the church’s teaching. Father Sean McDonagh, a member of the leadership team of the Association of Catholic Priests, told Catholic News Service that the survey “confirms that those who are advocating for change in the church are not a tiny minority, but are, in fact, at the heart of the church.”

Bishops pray for courage to defend religious liberty ROME (CNS) – Bishops from California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah began their “ad limina” visits to the Vatican with prayers for courage in defending religious freedom and in sharing faith in the risen Lord. Celebrating Mass April 16 at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the bishops listened to an account from the Acts of the Apostles about Sts. Peter and John being taken before the Sanhedrin, a religious court, and explaining how they performed miracles in the name of the risen Jesus. In his homily, Bishop Tod D. Brown of Orange, said, “As we look at what faces us in our own civil courts, not religious courts, we may be called upon in the not-toodistant future to be bold in our speech in defense of our religious rights.” The bishop made his comment as questions continued over the religious freedom issues involved in a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ mandate that most health plans must include contraception, sterilization and some abortion-inducing drugs free of charge, even if the employer is morally opposed to such services. The Mass began with the bishops gathering around the basilica’s main altar, built over what is believed to be the tomb of St. Paul, and singing the creed in Latin. Visits to the apostle’s tomb and to the tomb of St. Peter in the basilica at the Vatican are the key moments of prayer in every visit “ad limina apostolorum” (to the threshold of the apostles). The visits also include meetings with Pope Benedict XVI to report on what is going on in their dioceses and meetings at Vatican congregations, pontifical councils
and major church tribunals for discussions about issues of concern to local bishops and the Vatican. During the Mass at St. Paul’s, the bishops offered a prayer for San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer, who, they said, remained home to undergo medical tests. During the homily, Bishop Brown suggested that he and his fellow bishops “focus on the readings from the Acts of the Apostles” that are read at Mass during the Easter season to draw encouragement from the life of the early Christian community and, like them, to “boldly proclaim the message of Jesus.”

Nearly all US dioceses’ abuse policies found to comply with charter By Nancy Frazier O’Brien

WASHINGTON (CNS) – Ten years after passing their “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People,” the heads of nearly all U.S. dioceses are in full compliance with the 17-point document, according to recently completed audits. Two dioceses – Baker, Ore., and Lincoln, Neb. – and six Eastern Catholic eparchies refused to participate in the audits, as they had in past years, and were found to be noncompliant. In dioceses where the audits took place, however, only one diocese was found in noncompliance with one article of the charter. The Diocese of Shreveport, La., was found to be noncompliant because its diocesan review board had not met in two years. The diocese had not “experienced any charter-related violations in at least four years,” and the board was immediately convened when the diocese was notified of the gap, according to the report from StoneBridge Business Partners of Rochester, N.Y. StoneBridge conducted the audits for the first time in the year ending June 30, 2011. Earlier audits had been carried out by the Gavin Group of Boston. The 2011 annual report on implementation of the charter was published April 10 by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “As we were introduced to the various dioceses/eparchies around the country this year, we were impressed by the dedication of the safe environment coordinators and other diocesan and eparchial representatives who oversee the implementation of the charter on a daily basis,” said James J. Marasco, director of StoneBridge Business Partners, in a letter submitted with the audit report. “It is our hope that with our help, the Catholic Church in the United States may continue to restore the trust of the faithful and heal the wounds caused by abuse,” he added. Marasco noted in his letter that the bishops had updated the charter for 2012 to include child pornography and abuse against vulnerable adults as violations. “It is important for everyone in the dioceses and eparchies to be made aware of these changes so that safe environment programs can be modified accordingly,” he said. “The ability to remain fluid and open to suggestion are key attributes in building and maintaining a strong system.” Two dozen dioceses or archdioceses also agreed to audits at the parish level, which uncovered some inconsistencies in where and how records are maintained on such matters as background checks and safe environment training for employees and volunteers and training for children, the report said. This is approximately the same time pattern that has been reported in previous years, with most allegations reportedly occurring or beginning between the mid-1960s and the mid-1980s.

Archdiocese passes audit The Archdiocese of San Francisco passed the 2011 child protection charter audit and is preparing for an October visit by auditors as part of the 2012 audit conducted for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said Deacon John Norris, director of the Office of Child and Youth Protection at the archdiocese. He said both Archbishop George Niederauer and former Archbishop William J. Levada have been fully supportive of the audit and the bishops’ charter, and the archdiocese goes beyond what auditors ask of dioceses. For example, it is required that Catholic school children receive training in ways to keep themselves safe, but while it is not specified this take place on a yearly basis, the archdiocese sees that that training takes place each year. “We think the kids are an important part of keeping kids safe – what they can do for themselves,” said Norris. The archdiocese, said Norris, is also thorough in doing background checks on and fingerprinting and training adults who are going to have ongoing, unsupervised contact with children. “A lot of people are afraid of audits but we welcome them,” said Norris. “You get what you inspect, not what you expect,” quoting a business expression, Norris said. “If you don’t check it, it will not come out like you want.” The charter reads that dioceses and eparchies (in the Eastern church) “are to maintain safe environment programs which the diocesan/eparchial bishop deems to be in accord with Catholic moral principles.” – George Raine

Mission Dolores Academy students bring Stations of the Cross to life The Passion of Jesus Christ came to life during Holy Week for the 217 students at Mission Dolores Academy in San Francisco when the eighth grade class presented a silent re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross. The students created a tableau for each station, reverently drawing the congregation into a prayerful reflection of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. The re-enactment, which took place in the Basilica of Mission Dolores, was narrated by students Marcelle Valdez, Natassja Hernandez and Adrile Roque. Other students, led by Michael Araula as Jesus Christ, pantomimed each station as a choir of eighth grade girls sang “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?” Jerome Lenk, director of music and liturgy for Mission Dolores Basilica, provided accompaniment at the piano. Students in kindergarten through grade seven witnessed the re-enactment. The eighth grade performance

Youth New Orleans-bound For the fifth consecutive year, St. Raphael Parish in San Rafael is organizing a service mission to New Orleans, where young people will spend a week in July rebuilding homes and other structures destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, helping people who lost everything. Thirty-eight young people will make the trip this year, July 7-14, and this spring they are raising funds at bake sales, car washes and letter-writing efforts to cover their expenses – about $1,000 per person. The trip is led by Beth and Matthew McMurphy, the parish youth minister and her husband, a third grade teacher at St. Raphael School. The group of 38 young people, 15 and older, includes St. Raphael alumni and members of the English-speaking youth group and the Spanish-speaking youth group at the parish. Several are college students, and the group includes those making the trip for the first time and others who served in previous years. “They work long days in heat and humidity, doing all manner of construction, to bring Christ’s love and message of hope to those who have gone so long without it,� said Beth McMurphy. “They return physically tired but spiritually energized, ready to share stories of their experiences with friends and family and to worship together with their parish in a New Orleans-style liturgy,� she said.

A Mass of Thanksgiving March 4 marked the blessing of the remodeled and newly seismically sustained Parish Community Center at St. Bartholomew Parish in San Mateo. Father Michael Healy, pastor, joined him on the altar. “The main purpose and focus of the celebration was the hall’s rededication and blessing because of the successful remodel and the saving of the hall itself,â€? the parish said. At a reception following the liturgy, parishioners watched a video of the history of the refurbished building. Originally known as Country Day School, from 192941, it was purchased by the U.S. Government and used as an anti-aircraft station during World War II. In 1945, Archbishop John J. Mitty oversaw its purchase and until 1955 it was the site of Junipero Serra High School. The campus became St. Bartholomew Parish in 1955. The building housed the church in the gymnasium until the current church was completed in 1967. Christian Brother Haig Martin Charshaf died at Seton Hospital in Daly City on April 1. He was 82 years old a member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers for 65 years. Born in San Francisco, he attended Guadalupe School, Epiphany School and Sacred Heart High School completing his secondary education at his congregation’s Mont La Salle in Napa. Brother Haig is a graduate of the Christian Brothers’ St. Mary’s College and held graduate degrees Brother from Fordham University and the University Haig Martin of San Francisco. Charshaf, FSC Brother Haig taught at the now-closed St. Peter High School in San Francisco as well as at schools in Southern California and Sacramento. He assisted in the Diocese of Oakland finance department and with special projects from 1984-2004. A funeral Mass for Christian Brother Raphael Willeke was celebrated March 17 at St. Apollinaris Church in Napa. Brother Raphael died March 13. He was 85 years old and had been a Christian Brother for 67 years. Interment was in the Christian Brothers Cemetery in Napa. Dominican Father Xavier Lavagetto, pastor, St. Dominic Church, San Francisco, was homilist. Brother Raphael was born in San Francisco and graduated from Mission Brother Dolores School and St. Peter High School. Raphael He later studied at his congregation’s St. Willeke, FSC Mary’s College in Moraga. Brother Raphael served as teacher and principal at schools in Central and Southern California as well as in leadership roles with the Christian Brothers including director of novices and director of student brothers. He also served as an executive with the Christian Brothers’ Mont La Salle Vineyards. The velvet dresses didn’t really work for the street people that St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco clothes with donated discards at the society’s Help Desk. And some of the more raggedy donations to the Catholic nonprofit weren’t suitable for client use either. Then came Sally Rosen’s inspiration. The Help Desk volunteer, herself a seamstress had an idea: What about a fashion show using recreated discards and enlisting the help of the plethora of designers and student designers in the San Francisco Bay Area? “A lot of designers are struggling to survive on their creativity,” said Rosen, a member of St. Kevin Parish whose husband is a deacon assigned to St. Stephen Parish. “This is a way they can give back by doing what they love.” Thus began “Discarded to Divine,” a fashion show and auction that enlists home and fashion designers, professionals and students. The complimentary show, which began in 2005, was held April 13 at the De Young Museum as part of its “Friday Nights at the DeYoung” series. Lead singer Emily Jayne from the rock group “Fashion Slave” wore a “Discarded to Divine” creation from 2009. The piece, called “Asianism,” was designed by Bo Choi, then a student at the University of Washington, and inspired by the painting of Japanese kimonos at the deYoung. The second show, the fundraiser, is April 26 at the San Francisco Design Center Galleria. Tickets are available at discardedtodivine.org for the reception and auction. The finished one-of-a-kind outfits, accessories and pieces of home decor are reclaimed from 50 percent discarded, donated clothing and materials. Last year the event netted more than $100,000 for St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco’s programs. The event also builds visibility and connections among a community that might not naturally gravitate to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Rosen said. More than 60 percent of the 110 selected participants are students at the Academy of Art University, the California College of Art, City College of San Francisco, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and Apparel Design & Merchandising students at San Francisco State University, St. Vincent de Paul Society organizers said. “I very much support students doing community engaged scholarship,” said Connie Ulasewicz, associate professor of apparel design and merchandising at SF State. “Part of it is for students to understand ways they can contribute outside of the traditional economy and make a difference.” The merchandising class staged the De Young show and the designers in the class contributed pieces, Ulasewicz said. This semester her class designed the display windows for Goodwill stores at Van Ness and Market streets and in West Portal, she said. “My belief is that these young people need to understand they are fitting in with the community,” she said. “Studies have shown they will be more engaged citizens if they understand how they fit in.”

Be grateful, optimistic in face of challenges, rep tells students By Dana Perrigan Speaking before an assembly of several hundred juniors and seniors at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, presented a dire warning to the next generation of Americans. “We are challenged, because we are losing our compass,” said Speier, who represents the 12th Congressional District. She said the country the students will soon inherit is reeling from a decade of wars in two countries, a national debt that could reach $15 trillion dollars, an ailing and expensive educational system, a global energy crisis, partisan politics, gender inequality and the threat of a new war with Iran. Despite the challenges, Speier found reason to be optimistic and grateful. “There is never a time when we shouldn’t feel how lucky you are and I am to live in this great country,” she said. Drawing on the experiences of her own eventful life, Speier – who was invited to speak by the school’s Democracy Life Club – told the students that life “won’t be a bowl of cherries for any of you.” She told the students the story of her fact-finding mission in 1978 to investigate complaints of human rights abuses by the Rev. Jim Jones and his Peoples Temple followers in Jonestown, Guyana. After being shot five times, the 28-yearold congressional aide lay wounded at the remote jungle airport for 22 hours without medical aid.
“I thought, ‘Oh, my God, this is it,”’ she said. “Like a good Mercy girl I said the act of contrition and I waited for the lights to go out.” During her long recovery, one went on. “I decided that I was not going to be a victim for the rest of my life – I was going to be a survivor.” Speier went on to survive several early election losses, the death of her first husband in a car accident, single motherhood and near bankruptcy. “Your life isn’t going to be particularly the way you wanted it,” Speier said. The values she learned at Mercy High School in Burlingame – which her daughter now attends – said the 61-year-old congresswoman, helped her through the tough times, along with friends and family. She went on to become the youngest member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, and to serve in both the California State Assembly and Senate. In 2008, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Recently appointed to the House Armed Services Committee, Speier told the students that their country spends more on defense than all the other countries in the world put together. A student planning on joining the Marine Corps upon graduation asked Speier for her analysis of Iran. She told him that she fears Israel may unilaterally attack Iran and draw the U.S. into the conflict. She believes sanctions are the best option. “We really don’t know if they’re close to having a nuclear weapon,” she said.

Speaking on education, Speier said that California was last in the nation on spending for K-8, and that higher education is becoming prohibitively expensive. “I believe higher education should be free,” she said. She would help pay for it by instituting an oil severance tax and tax on Internet commerce. Asked by a student to comment on the Obama administration’s health care mandate that would require insurers to pay for birth control pills, Speier said she believed it was unfair and even discriminatory not to have the coverage. “Birth control is not about abortion,” she said.
On April 12, the U.S. bishops issued a call to action to defend religious liberty and urged laity to work to protect the first freedom of the Bill of Rights. Among the concerns listed in the bishops’ document is the U.S. Health and Human Services mandate forcing all employers, including religious organizations, to provide and pay for coverage of employees’ contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs even when they have moral objections to them. (CNS) – “Heroic Catholicism, not casual Catholicism” is required to confront state and federal threats to religious liberty and the church’s public ministries, Peoria Bishop Daniel R. Jenky told more than 500 Catholic men who marched through the city’s downtown in a steady rain April 14 in a public defense of the faith. “We can no longer be Catholics by accident, but instead be Catholics by conviction,” said Bishop Jenky. He warned participants in the “A Call to Catholic Men of Faith” rally that Catholic schools, hospitals, and Newman Centers “could easily be shut down” rather than cooperate with the government’s mandate that most health plans cover the cost of contraception, sterilization and some drugs that can induce abortion. “Because no Catholic institution, under any circumstance, can ever cooperate with the instrinsic evil of killing innocent human life in the womb,” the bishop said. After joining the men on a silent, mile-long walk from the Peoria riverfront to St. Mary’s Cathedral, Bishop Jenky used some of the strongest language yet by a church official in protesting the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ contraceptive mandate. The bishop mentioned President Barack Obama three times in his homily at the rally Mass. “In clear violation of our First Amendment rights,” said Bishop Jenky, “Barack Obama with his radical, pro-abortion and extreme secularist agenda now seems intent on following a similar path” as other governments throughout history who “have tried to force Christians to huddle and hide only within the confines of their churches.” The Obama administration’s contraceptive mandate includes a religious exemption, but leaders of various Catholic and other faith-based organizations say it is too narrow and they will still be forced to provide coverage they oppose. The administration has defended the mandate as “preventative care,” but religious groups that oppose it say it infringes on their religious liberty. A new federal proposal issued March 21 suggested thirdparty administrators pay the costs of contraceptives for religious employers who object, but the U.S. bishops said even with that, the mandate remained flawed. To sustained applause, Bishop Jenky said no matter what happens in “this passing moment,” “Christ wins” and the church will survive current threats, just as it has endured persecutions from the Roman Empire through Nazism and communism. “In the power of the Resurrection,” Bishop Jenky said forcefully, “the church will survive the hatred of Hollywood, the malice of the media, and the mendacious wickedness of the abortion industry. “The church will survive the entrenched corruption and sheer incompetence of our Illinois state government,” he continued, “and even the calculated disdain of the president of the United States, his appointed bureaucrats in HHS, and of current majority in the federal Senate.” Bishop Jenky said “this is not a war where any believing Catholic may remain neutral.” “No Catholic ministry – and yes, Mr. President, for Catholics our schools and hospitals are ministries – can remain faithful to the lordship of the risen Christ and to his glorious Gospel of Life if they are forced to pay for abortions,” said Bishop Jenky. He said every practicing Catholic “must vote, and must vote their Catholic consciences” in the fall elections.

By late April 12, the majority of justices had announced their votes. The Brazilian bishops’ conference asked Catholics to hold prayer vigils outside of the court to encourage justices to consider the life of the unborn child prior to their vote. “We understand that the principles of the inviolable right to life, the dignity of the human person and the promotion of well-being, without any form of discrimination (stated in the Brazilian Constitution) also includes anencephalic fetuses,” said a document distributed by the bishops’ conference to parishes around the country. Archbishop Orani Joao Tempesta of Rio de Janeiro led a vigil for unborn children and the preservation of life April 10. “Even if (life is) brief, everyone has the right to life,” he said. In a statement the archdiocese said, “If the Supreme Court defines this type of abortion as constitutional, it may open up precedence to the legalization of other forms of abortion.”

‘Stand your ground’ The following editorial from the April 16 issue of America, a national Catholic weekly magazine, was redistributed by Catholic News Service in response to editors’ requests for a regular sampling of current commentary from around the Catholic press. It was written by the magazine’s editors. In Sanford, Fla., an African-American teenager in a hoodie and a self-appointed neighborhood guardian with a gun clashed on a dark night in late February. Trayvon Martin, 17, lay dead. George Zimmerman, 28, a former altar boy of white and Hispanic origin and a criminal justice major at Seminole State College, had pulled the trigger. Zimmerman had followed Martin, against the advice of a 911 operator. Over the past 14 months, he had called police 46 times to report problems and suspicions in his gated community. Zimmerman has twice been accused of violence or criminal misconduct; but he has a concealed weapons permit and remained at large for 45 days, because Florida, like 23 other states, maintains a “stand your ground” statute that allows individuals to use deadly force if they have a “reasonable fear” of harm. (On April 11, Zimmermann was jailed without bond after turning himself in; he has been charged with second-degree murder.) Martin, 6 feet 4 inches tall but weighing only 140 pounds, earned extra money washing cars. He baby-sat for his younger cousins. His offense that night was to be a black youth delivering a bag of Skittles to his soon-to-be stepbrother. The Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson described the tragedy best: Martin may have been killed because of “the bull’s eye that black men wear throughout their lives” and for failing to obey “the vital imperative to never, ever be caught on the wrong street at the wrong time.” Martin’s death has sounded a national wake-up call
regarding the still imperfect status of race relations in the United States, but it also calls for an examination of a decades-long retreat from rational gun control. A brief period of legislative progress for gun control in the 1980s following the shooting of President Ronald Reagan was met by a counteroffensive from U.S. gun lobbies, principally the National Rifle Association, that continues to this day. Legislators and citizens who should have known better wearied of the struggle to better regulate America’s “militias,” thinking perhaps that gun-rights advocates would eventually be satisfied with various incremental victories against gun controls. But instead, each extension of gun-use rights has only provoked hunger for more. What has been the effect of this unilateral cease-fire? Pro-gun rationalizations that used to be dismissed as parody have moved into the mainstream. Events at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech, the shootings in Tucson that left Gabrielle Gifford gravely wounded and other deadly incidents should have driven the nation toward more rational gun restrictions, but America has gone the other way and seems closer to a gun-happy dystopia than ever before. Thirty-six states have relaxed restrictions for concealed weapons permits under so-called “shall issue” procedures. Four states require no registration of handguns at all. Other states have severely curtailed common sense restrictions on where handguns may be carried. Now Second Amendment enthusiasts carry guns into shopping malls, bars, college campuses, restaurants, even churches. On March 21 Indiana’s Gov. Mitch Daniels signed legislation that allows citizens to use deadly force against the police if they perceive police actions to be unlawful. This has created an entirely new arena for unintended, mortal collisions between police and the public.
In 2005, Florida became the first state to expand broadly the right to use deadly force for self-defense, obliterating the “duty to retreat” from threats in public places. In this new situation, once self-defense has been invoked, the burden is on the prosecution to disprove the claim. “Stand” laws have led to the multiplication of cases in which gang leaders, drug dealers and bar-room pugilists have killed those who have provoked them and gone free. Justifiable-homicide claims in Florida have more than tripled since the law was passed. The incident in Sanford raises questions about race, ethnicity, neighborhood tensions and violence in U.S. culture. A common factor in these issues is the failure of politicians to stand up to the NRA and insist that the safety of the nation’s young people, for example, has a higher priority than a guntoter’s absolutized version of Second Amendment freedom. Trayvon Martin paid the ultimate price for the public’s declining interest in responsible limitations on gun ownership. Even if Zimmerman is prosecuted, gun worship will remain. The Martin tragedy has not discouraged the NRA’s current press for a national right-to-carry reciprocity bill that would nationalize concealed-carry permits. Only a national law that restricts who can own a gun or carry a concealed weapon and limits where guns may be kept can confront this crisis. Rational gun control might save the lives of future Trayvon Martins of every race and age entitled to walk city streets; but it will require courageous civic leaders who really value human life and will stand their ground against the NRA. Working to change Latin America’s culture of violence against women By Ezra Fieser SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (CNS) – On a Friday in mid-March, Dominican police were called to a three-story hotel that sits off a major highway in a busy neighborhood here. Inside, they found a grisly crime scene: a woman, strangled to death, and the 37-year-old man who’d killed her hanged dead with the bed sheets. Police said the murder-suicide was the result of a fight between the couple. Human rights groups called it something else: an example of the growing trend of violence against women. “Women are being killed and are subjected to abuse just because of their gender,” said Virgilio Almanzar, director of the Dominican Human Rights Committee in Santo Domingo. The murder became the country’s 53rd case of femicide in 2012. The term, commonly used in Latin America but rarely seen in the United States, originally meant the targeted killing of women, but has since expanded to include all murder of women. “It’s a serious problem, not just in the Dominican Republic,” Almanzar said. “It’s a problem we share with other countries in Latin America.” A majority of the most dangerous countries in the world for females are found in Latin America and the Caribbean, a region where historical patriarchy is increasingly clashing with a changing role for women. While some, including Catholic officials working on the issue, see signs of progress, such as new laws and public awareness campaigns, observers say changing the deep-rooted culture is a slow process. Of the 25 countries around the world with the highest homicide rates for women, 14 are in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to a recent survey by Geneva-based research organization Small Arms Survey. The three most dangerous countries were El Salvador, Jamaica and Guatemala, respectively. The countries were ranked by female homicide rates for 2011. Women are killed far less frequently than men, the study’s authors noted: “Men are up to 10 times more likely to become victims of a homicide in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.” But women in these countries are often subjected to violence simply because they are women and seen as the weaker sex. What’s more, the increase in drug-related violence has translated into more gruesome crimes against women, including decapitations and torture. The issue is a particularly touchy one for the Catholic Church. Church workers have been effectively working with women to reduce violence in hotspots throughout the region, often in trying circumstances. Meanwhile, Catholicism has received sharp criticism for not taking a stronger position on the issue. Editorial writers criticized Pope Benedict XVI for not highlighting the issue in his two-country visit to Latin America in March. “He arrived in Mexico while the country is fighting two deadly battles: drug trafficking and femicide. said something strong. ... On the second: nothing,” wrote El Telegrafo, a daily newspaper in Ecuador. “The violence (against women) must be part of the central concern for the Catholic Church. It cannot ignore femicide.” A 2011 U.N. study of worldwide violence found that, as a region, the Americas, including the U.S. and Canada, ranked second to Africa for female homicide rates. While females represent only 10 percent of murder victims in the Americas, the sheer level of violence in the region, particularly in Latin America, puts women at risk. “The smaller share of female victims among the total number of homicides in the Americas does not equate to a lower female homicide rate there in comparison to other regions,” the report concluded. From the patriarchy of Spanish conquistadors to the machismo for which many of its countries are infamous, Latin America has long cultivated a culture in which women are particularly vulnerable to violence. More recently, the region has elected several female presidents, including Dilma Rousseff, who in 2011 became the first female president in the region’s largest country, Brazil. Political successes underscore the changes for women in the workplace. “Women are not just wives and mothers. They’re also increasingly providers in the family” in Latin America, said Hilary Anderson, a specialist with the Inter-American Commission of Women, part of the Organization of American States. “Neither the state nor the church has kept pace with

the changes in Latin America, or any other part of the world.” Women’s groups have blamed the church for reinforcing stereotypes, such as blaming women for violence because of the way they dress. Last year, for example, activists demonstrated in front of the cathedral in San Jose, Costa Rica, after a bishop urged women to dress “modestly” and with “decency” and to not become “an object anymore.” The marchers chanted, “Out with the bishops!” and, “What are we going to burn? The Episcopal Conference!” according to news reports. Signs exist, however, that the tide is slowly turning. The issue of violence against women is starting to receive attention from governments and church officials alike. Several countries have passed laws specifically targeting violence against women. Governments and civil society organizations have teamed to produce awareness campaigns. And, in several cases, dioceses have established gender-based violence programs. Guatemala, the third most violent place in the world for women, passed its own law targeting violence against women in 2008, making it one of the first countries in Central America to do so. Four years later, the law has rarely been employed, underscoring a larger hurdle found throughout the region. “The legal framework is in place in Latin America. It’s a matter of implementation,” Anderson said. “Laws are on the books. But women are still finding it difficult to pursue their cases.”

A time to plant and a time to reap Prices, from gas to food, continue to rise and budgets get tighter. How might we counter this? Consider becoming an agrarian. I thought about this because recently I received a book on Tuscan cooking. As a cook, I savored every recipe. Why were the recipes so attractive? They were simple and called for herbs I grow that are inexpensive to produce. In our parish garden, we grow sweet basil, thyme, rosemary, cilantro, lettuce, eggplant, parsley, peppers and tomatoes. I often take a simple piece of chicken and pasta and convert them into a gourmet dinner, thanks to the herbs from the garden. I make big portions because, like good wine, the mixture of herbs with meat, poultry and pasta ferment with time, creating a richer, fuller taste the second time around. A side benefit of cooking at home is the joy of creativity. Too often we tend to go the fast food route and leave the creativity to others. Experimenting with food is a way
of heightening our entrepreneurial spirit. Instead of feeling paralyzed by rising prices, creative cooking puts us into action. It gives us a weapon to combat budget woes. Now is the time to plan and plant a garden. Even if you don’t have a plot of land, you can still grow herbs and tomatoes in an apartment or on a balcony. Working with the earth not only produces food for the body, but also mental food for our psychological well-being. Some years ago, I found myself fighting depression. I had taken on too many jobs. Depression tends to paralyze us, create panic attacks and the feeling that nothing has meaning. The wisdom of an old Benedictine monk helped me to reverse this. During one of his classes, he told his students, “You have enough under your skull cap, now it’s time to get out into the garden and get dirt under your fingernails.” I dropped everything, put on overalls, and worked the soil in our garden. My depression disappeared. Gardening puts us in touch with the life the earth con-
tains. When we are deeply in touch with it, we are in touch with life-giving powers. Today, many of us work in offices that are often artificially lighted. We inhale secondary air Father Eugene and seldom, if ever, touch soil. As a consequence, Hemrick we are deprived of the earth’s life-giving powers. Andrew Sullivan’s non-threatening Jesus The cover story for Newsweek magazine during Holy Week, penned by political and cultural commentator Andrew Sullivan, concerns the “crisis” that is supposedly gripping Christianity. Weighed down by its preoccupation with doctrines and supernatural claims, which are incredible to contemporary audiences, compromised by the corruption of its leadership, co-opted for base political ends, Christianity is verging, he argues, on the brink of collapse. The solution Sullivan proposes is a return to Christianty’s roots and essential teachings. And here he invokes, as a sort of patron saint, Thomas Jefferson, who as a young man literally took a straight razor to the pages of the New Testament and cut out any passages dealing with the miraculous, the supernatural, or the resurrection and divinity of Jesus. The result of this Jeffersonian surgery is Jesus the enlightened sage, the teacher of timeless moral truths concerning love, forgiveness and non-violence. Both Jefferson and Sullivan urge that this Christ, freed from churchly distortions, can still speak in a liberating way to an intelligent and non-superstitious audience. As the reference to Jefferson should make clear, there is nothing particularly new in Sullivan’s proposal. The liberation of Jesus the wisdom figure from the shackles of supernatural doctrine has been a preoccupation of much of the liberal theology of the last 200 years. Hence, Friedrich Schleiermacher turned Jesus into a religious genius with a particularly powerful sense of God. Rudolf Bultmann converted him into the prototype of the existentialist philosopher. Immanuel Kant transformed him into the supreme teacher of the moral life. And this approach is very much alive today. Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle, to give just two examples among many, present Jesus, not as the Godman risen from the dead, but rather as a New Age guru. The first problem with this type of theorizing is that it has little to do with the New Testament. As Jefferson’s bible makes clear, the excision of references to the miraculous, to the resurrection, and to the divinity of Jesus delivers to us mere fragments of the Gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were massively interested in the miracles and exorcisms
of Jesus and they were positively obsessed with his dying and rising. The Gospels have been accurately characterized as “passion narratives with long introductions.” Further, the earliest Christian texts that we have are the epistles of St. Paul, and in those letters that St. Paul wrote to the communities he founded, there are but a tiny handful of references to the teaching of Jesus. What clearly preoccupied Paul was not the moral doctrine of Jesus, but the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. And in the evangelical preaching of the first disciples – preserved in the Acts of the Apostles – we find, not articulations of Jesus’ ethical vision, but rather affirmations of the resurrection. St. Peter’s “you killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead, and to this we are witnesses” (Acts 3:15) is absolutely typical. And from this followed as a consequence the affirmation of the lordship of Jesus. One of the commonest phrases in the writings of Paul is “Iesous Kyrios” (Jesus is Lord), which carried a very provocative connotation indeed. For a watchword of Paul’s time and place was “Kaiser kyrios” (Caesar is Lord), meaning that the Roman emperor was the one to whom final allegiance was due. In saying “Iesous Kyrios,” Paul was directly challenging that political and social status quo, which goes a long way toward explaining why he spent a good deal of time in jail. And this leads to the second major problem with a proposal like Sullivan’s: It offers absolutely no challenge to the powers that be. It is precisely the bland and harmless version of Christianity with which the regnant culture is comfortable. Go back to Peter’s sermon for a moment. “You killed him,” said the chief of Jesus’ disciples. The “you” here includes the power structures of the time, both Jewish and Roman, which depended for their endurance in power on their ability to frighten their subjects through threats of lethal punishment. “But God raised him.” The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the clearest affirmation possible that God is more powerful than the corrupt and violent authorities that govern the world – which is precisely why the tyrants have always been terrified of it. Is Occupy prophetic? The documents of Vatican II invited us to examine the signs of the times and reflect and how we ought to respond. The Occupy
up the cross, the greatest expression of statesponsored terrorism – they were purposely taunting the leaders of their time: “You think that frightens us?” The opening line of the Gospel of Mark is a Father direct challenge to Rome: “The beginning of the Robert Barron good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). “Good news” (“euangelion” in Mark’s Greek) was a term used to describe an imperial victory. The first Christian evangelist is saying, not so subtly, that the real good news hasn’t a thing to do with Caesar. Rather, it has to do with someone whom Caesar killed and whom God raised from the dead. And just to rub it in, he refers to this resurrected Lord as “Son of God.” Ever since the time of Augustus, “Son of God” was a title claimed by the Roman emperor. Not so, says Mark. The authentic Son of God is the one who is more powerful than Caesar. Again and again, Sullivan says that he wants a Jesus who is “apolitical.” Quite right – and that’s just why the cultural and political leaders of the contemporary West will be perfectly at home with his proposal. A defanged, privatized, spiritual teacher poses little threat to the status quo. But the Son of God, crucified under Pontius Pilate and risen from the dead through the power of the Holy Spirit, is a permanent and very dangerous threat. That’s why I will confess that I smiled a bit at Andrew Sullivan as I read his article. Like the young Thomas Jefferson, I’m sure he thinks he’s being very edgy and provocative. Au contraire, in point of fact. His conclusion was that whoever spoke those words and did those deeds recorded in the Gospels was truly an inspired and enlightened man. However, when Gandhi looked around, especially in South Africa and India, where the rulers were Christian, he was shocked at the scandalously wide gulf between the profession and practice of faith. Some of those calling themselves Christian practiced violence, oppression, exploitation and discrimination. Hence the following quotes attributed to Gandhi: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” “I would suggest first of all that all of you Christians, missionaries and all, begin to live more like Jesus Christ.” “Oh, I don’t reject Christ. I love Christ. It’s just that so many of you Christians are so unlike Christ.” These sentiments seem to echo George Bernard Shaw’s observation: “Christianity is a good idea, if people ever tried it.” As we “easter” in the risen Christ, the important questions we need to ask are: Are we credible when we call ourselves followers of Christ? Do we listen to our master’s voice? Do we live by the values of Christ? Is there a connection between what we do in religion and how we live our life? Can we feel the sacredness of the deep-

Are we witnesses? est longings of people everywhere? Can we care for those who cannot care for themselves? Do we bring about transformation of society, culture and, civilization by being, as Gandhi would say, “the change we want to see in the world”? Another way to ask these questions is simply: Are we witnesses? The risen Jesus says to the “startled and terrified” apostles: “You are witnesses of these things.” Interpreting the scriptures, Jesus says “that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.” The indicative part of being witnesses is to accept the Risen Jesus. The imperative part of witnessing is that they had to preach “repentance for the
forgiveness of sins … to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” To understand the meaning of the resurrection is to share its riches and rewards for the wellbeing and reconciliation of the world. Peter in the Acts spells out for the crowds the indicative aspect of witnessing: “God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses.” The imperative dimension is that people should “repent … and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.” The power of the Resurrection will enable us to help reconcile us with God and one another. John in his letter too makes the connection between Jesus being the expiation for the sins

The meaning of the Resurrection is simply that Jesus is alive. He is not confined to the tomb, even though the world might conspire to keep him entombed. To live our lives in the light of the risen Christ is to be witnesses. To arrange and organize the world and all its institutions from the perspective of the Risen Christ is truly to be witnesses. To ensure that the world is not fragmented by religion and race, economic and social class, is to witness for the resurrection. To ensure that everyone is entitled to food, education, medical help, safety, security, peace, justice, and dignity is witnessing for the risen Jesus. The followers of Jesus will bring the presence of the risen Christ to their quests and endeavors. Along with him, we can overcome the overwhelming odds in order to make abundant life possible for all. When the followers of Christ are authentic and effective witnesses of the risen Christ, there can be no gulf between faith and service. There will be an inseparable connection between Christ and the followers of Christ. Gandhi’s disappointment may be addressed by our being witnesses, aligning ourselves with Jesus for the transformation of the world. Four Gospels mentioned in the Bible Question: As you are aware, the four Gospels in the Catholic Bible are based on the writings of Sts. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. But recently, as I was channel surfing, I came across a television program that spoke of the Gospels of Judas Iscariot, Peter the Apostle and Mary Magdalene. When I mentioned this to a couple of Catholic friends, they told me that there are in fact many different Gospels, in addition to the four we all know and the three referenced on television. If that is so, then why doesn’t our Bible include all of the Gospels? (Camp Hill, Pa.) Answer: From the earliest days of the church, and certainly from the midpoint of the second century, four and only four Gospels have generally been regarded by Christian authors as the official (or “canonical”) Gospels and have thus found their way into the Bible, namely, the Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It is true that there are several dozen other documents (or fragments of documents) which are sometimes referred to as “Gospels,” including the ones your question mentions. Those, however, have never been widely regarded as authentic and contemporaneous accounts of the words and actions of Christ, and are commonly called “apocryphal” Gospels. The differences between canonical and apocryphal Gospels are notable. The canonical Gospels were written, broadly speaking, during the apostolic period, while the apostles of Jesus or
their immediate disciples were still alive. Those narratives were given nearly immediate acceptance by the Christian churches of the East and the West and universally recognized as authentic. In fact, around 140 A.D., the author Tatian produced a harmonization of excerpts from the four canonically recognized Gospels. Accounts from the apocryphal Gospels, on the other hand, were used only sporadically by scattered groups and never gained wide acceptance. References to the apocryphal Gospels are found later on, around the end of the second century. In addition, the canonical Gospels are fairly straightforward and largely consistent accounts of the life and sayings of Jesus, while the apocryphal ones are rife with stories of a legendary and unique nature. In trying to meet the demands of popular piety, they often conceive of events (e.g., “miracles” performed by Jesus while he was still a child) which the canonical Gospels mention not at all. Question: I would like to know whether watching Mass on television fulfills one’s obligation. My husband never goes to church, but he does watch Mass on TV every Sunday. I attend Mass regularly, although I have missed church recently because of my health. (Louisville, Ky.) Answer: The simple answer to your question is “no.” Watching Mass on television does not fulfill one’s Sunday obligation. Assuming that your husband is a Catholic and is in reasonable health, he is required to be at Mass in per-
son. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in section 2180, specifies that the Sunday obligation is satisfied by “assistance” at Mass, and every commentator I have read views that to mean attendance at a Father eucharistic celebration. Kenneth Doyle Although taking holy Communion at Mass is not required to satisfy the Sunday obligation, it seems clear that those who participate most fully are the ones who receive back from the Lord the sacred food offered in sacrifice. That gift, of course, is not available to television viewers. But shut-ins can derive real spiritual benefit from following the prayers and readings of the Mass on television. I would suggest that shut-ins can multiply that benefit by asking to be placed on their parish’s Communion list so that an extraordinary minister of holy Communion will visit them regularly. Making an icon is pilgrimage of faith, says US Augustinian artist By Carol Glatz ROME (CNS) – The Philadelphia-born artist priest slowly inhaled, opened his mouth wide over an unfinished icon and released a long, belly-deep breath. Augustinian Father Richard Cannuli was warming the thick layers of a mixture of red clay, glue made from animal hide and a drizzle of honey that had been painted in the shape of a halo on a wooden panel. He then gently affixed a strip of 23-carat gold leaf to the dried clay. “I breathe three times so that I want to get my breath moist” and warm so the clay gets tacky enough for the thin gold leaf to stick to it, he said. It’s like re-enacting creation, he said, when God breathed life into Adam – a name that comes from the Arabic “Adeem” for “skin of the earth” or clay. “God formed humanity out of clay and breathed life into the clay,” he said. “The gold then represents the spirit of God that’s entering the icon through the gold.” Surrounded by powdered pigments, paintbrushes and gesso-covered birch plywood boards, Father Cannuli demonstrated the long, slow process of painting an icon in the ancient Russian-Byzantine tradition. He had just wrapped up a two-week icon-making workshop held in an empty side chapel at the headquarters of the Augustinians in Rome, just steps from St. Peter’s Square. The precise 22-step process of making an icon is like a spiritual journey and a reflection of the Christian faith, he told Catholic News Service April 12. The icon is painted on wood, which represents the tree of the garden of paradise, Noah’s ark of salvation and the wood of the tree Christ was crucified on, he said. The yolk and water used in the egg tempera represent life and baptism. Father Cannuli, who has taught studio art at Villanova University for 33 years, has been teaching icon-making at the Catholic university for the past 13 years. The priest is currently on a one yearsabbatical in four European cities to conduct workshops and display his latest mixed media art installation on Sicilian roadside shrines. An icon, which is a form of religious art of flat painted images, is a term that comes from the Greek “eikon” for image. Just as clicking a colorful desktop icon will “take you somewhere else,” a religious icon, too, opens up onto a new world beyond

the image, he said. “It’s a window that opens up to eternity.” Father Cannuli said he sees a resurgence of traditional iconic figures in the United States. “One thing people are going to learn is patience” when they tackle painting an icon, he said as he brushed red clay onto the tip of a metal compass to make a clean arc along the halo’s outer edge. There is a lot of waiting time between
painting with hand-mixed egg-based tempera and letting the medium thoroughly dry, he said. One nine-by-12 inch small icon may take up to 40 hours – spread over seven to 15 days – to complete. While waiting for a layer to dry, “students ask, ‘What can I do next?’ I usually say pray, read, keep yourself occupied because there is nothing they can do” to work ahead or speed up the process, he said.
In fact, it is the quiet, reflective nature of making icons that leads many students, even non-Christians, to experience some kind of spiritual growth. Working with icons was what led Father Cannuli to decide to be ordained into the priesthood in 1999. “When you’re working with an icon there’s this very tight communication between you and the prototype of the image that you’re painting,” he said. He said one Russian master iconographer told him he should pray to the person being portrayed for guidance in everything from what color to use next to whether one’s life is on the right track. Then-Brother Cannuli thought his life was going along fine “and then all of a sudden everything was turned upside down.” Over the next six years, he worked with a spiritual director and decided to become a priest. He said making an icon “has nothing to do with the individual painter,” but is more about a person’s ability to let God be in control. “It’s like all along I was creating and now all of a sudden I let go and let God create,” he said. Individual expression in iconography is muted by the fact that the paint must be pooled on the board, avoiding all brushstrokes that would leave a kind of “signature” of the painter, he said. Only the name of the saint is inked on the final piece. The process for traditional icons is always done with the same elements and techniques, in the same order, and using images that are not products of the artist’s imagination, but are exact tracings of copies of ancient iconographic figures, he said. Icons, which are venerated, not worshipped, are believed to act as channels of divine grace. In fact, every icon of Christ, the Mother of God, a saint or archangel almost always has at least one ear prominently exposed toward the viewer, he said, “so the prototype you are painting can hear your prayers and bring them to the father” in heaven. Father Cannuli collects old icons and said he gets a sense of comfort looking at the ones that have been held and handled for so many years in prayer. “You don’t worry about them once they’re finished. They get damaged or chipped, it’s meant to be, you just have to let it go. “You don’t have control over it. It has a life of its own,” he said.

A stone’s throw away from everyone Truth finds us in different ways. Sometimes we learn what something means, not in a classroom but in a hospital. Several years ago, I was visiting a man dying of cancer in a hospital room. He was dying well, though nobody dies easy. He felt a deep loneliness, even as he was surrounded by people who loved him deeply. Here’s how he described it: “I have a wonderful wife and children, and lots of family and friends. Someone is holding my hand almost every minute, but ... I’m a stone’s throw away from everyone. I’m dying and they’re not. I’m inside of something into which they can’t reach. It’s awfully lonely, dying.” He had borrowed his salient phrase from Luke’s Gospel where we are told that on the night before his death Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane with his disciples. There he invited them to pray with him as he struggled to find strength to face his death; but, as Luke cryptically adds, while he sweated blood, he was “a stone’s throw away” from them. How far is a stone’s throw? It’s distance enough to leave you in a place where no one can reach you. Just as we come out of the womb alone, we leave this earth alone. Jesus, like the man whom I just described, also faced his death knowing that he was loved by others but also knowing that in the face of death he was entering a place where he was deeply and utterly alone. And this emphasis on aloneness is in fact one of the major points within the Passion narratives. In describing Jesus’ death, perhaps more than anything else, the Gospels
want us to focus in on his aloneness, his abandonment, his being a stone’s throw away from everyone. Many of us, I am sure, have seen the famous film by Mel Gibson, “The Passion of the Christ.” While the film is, no doubt, a worthy piece of art, it is more distracting than beneficial in terms of helping us understand Jesus’ passion. Why? Because the film so strongly emphasizes the physical suffering of Jesus, which is precisely what the Gospel accounts don’t do. Rather, the Gospels deliberately understate what Jesus had to endure physically because they want us to focus on something else, namely, his moral and emotional suffering, particularly his sense of abandonment, his aloneness, the absence at the most crucial time in his life of any deep human support, intensified by the seeming absence of God. In his loneliest hour Jesus was without any human soul mate and without divine consolation. He was, in the words of Gil Bailie, unanimity-minus-one. There is no deeper sense of abandonment. And it is within that utter aloneness that Jesus has to continue to give himself over in trust, love, forgiveness, and faith. It’s easy to believe in love when we feel loved; to forgive others when they are gracious toward us; and to believe in God when we feel strongly God’s presence. The difficulty, the “test,” comes when human love and divine consolation collapse, when we find ourselves surrounded by misunderstanding, abandonment, distrust, hatred, and doubt, especially at our loneliest hour, just at that moment when life itself is eclipsing. How do we respond then? Will love, trust, forgiveness, and faith collapse in our
hearts when the emotional pillars that normally sustain us collapse? Can we forgive someone who is hurting us when that person believes that we are the problem? Can we continue to love someone who hates us? Can we Father Ron continue to believe in trust Rolheiser when everywhere around us we are experiencing betrayal? Can we let our hands and hearts be opened, stretched, and nailed to a cross even when we are fearful? Can we continue to have faith in God when every feeling inside us suggests God has abandoned us? Can we still hand over our spirit when we feel absolutely no human or divine support? Where are our hearts when we are “a stone’s throw away” from everyone? That, and not the capacity to physically endure scourging and nails, was the real test inside of Jesus’ passion. That will be our test, too, in the end. One day each of us will also have to “give over” his or her spirit. Inside of that unanimity-minus-one, will our hearts be warm or bitter? However, a frosty telegram awaited him in Queenstown: “Get off that ship.” When news of the Titanic’s disastrous fate reached Father Browne, he folded the telegram and put it into his wallet and kept it there for the rest of his life. Historian offers unsentimental look at Irish urban experience “THE IRISH WAY: BECOMING AMERICAN IN THE MULTIETHNIC CITY” by James R. Barrett. Penguin Press (New York, 2012). 369 pp., $29.95.
Reviewed by Peggy Weber (CNS) If you are looking for a sentimental book about Irish immigrants in America – “The Irish Way” is not it. James R. Barrett, a professor of history and AfricanAmerican studies at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, takes an honest, well-researched look at the Irish influence on the new, urban American identity. It is part sociology and part history. A lot of the information is neither romantic nor endearing. However, facts are facts. It is a big undertaking. Barrett looks at how the Irish influenced their world. He focuses on their role in several major American cities and their interaction and influence with other ethnic groups. He examines all of this with the background of the street, the parish, the workplace, on stage, through the machine and in the nation. It is a daunting task. However, the 73 pages of footnotes show that the author has done his homework. He writes in the introduction: “My object is not to advance a universal theory of Irish Americanization. The size and location of their communities varied. ... A legacy of real and imagined slights shaped Irish Catholic consciousness and their defensive urban culture. They told themselves and others that their success was hard-won, that they must
stick together and take care of their own. At its best, this mindset led Irish-Americans to support integration and reform for other oppressed migrant peoples; at its worst; it became an excuse for racial and ethnic intolerance such as the Irish themselves had faced.” The book explains how the Irish, some of the first immigrants, certainly suffered. Barrett notes: “In the 1830s and 1840s, Protestant gangs invaded Irish Catholic neighborhoods in Philadelphia, Boston and New York, burning homes, convents and churches.” It also chronicles how the Irish, in turn, developed turf wars with other ethnic groups in cities such as Boston, New York and Chicago. The church also shares the dual nature of this book. It shows a caring and compassionate group, but also a church that is ruled by Irish hierarchy and not necessarily open to welcoming others to predominantly Irish parishes. Nuns receive high praise, for the most part, in the book. Barrett especially notes that “the curriculum in schools taught by Irish nuns resembled that of the public schools, though it also included Catholic religious instruction. Irish
nuns were responsible not only for the upward mobility of many Irish women but also in the long run for Americanizing them.” (Here Barrett credits historian Sarah Deutsch). In terms of politics, the Irish certainly created a strong political machine. For example, Barrett writes: “From 1908 to 1933, every Lower East Side Tammany candidate for the board of alderman, the state assembly and the state senate was Irish.” Of course there are the stories of patronage and power. This book shows the darkness and light of the Irish immigrant experience and how this influenced others. Barrett acknowledges this when he writes: “An abiding tension between inclusiveness and exclusiveness, between cosmopolitanism and parochialism, lies at the heart of the Irish-American relations with other groups. This story turns on the dynamic between those impulses.” Barrett’s book shows a lot of the negative behavior of Irish immigrants. It notes that there were some positive outcomes but mostly it shows how one group can affect so many others. The book pieces together a lot of information and facts. It is a sociological study that has a nice conversational tone. And it allows the reader to make his or her own conclusions about what the Irish did or did not do to develop the urban experience. Fisher (CNS) Rabbi James Rudin has been involved in JewishChristian relations for the American Jewish Committee since the late 1960s, and his writing reflects both sound research and a wealth of personal experience. “Cushing, Spellman, O’Connor: The Surprising Story of How Three American Cardinals Transformed CatholicJewish Relations,” engagingly written for general readership, tells the story of three key American cardinals who, among others in this country and in Europe, profoundly influenced the development and implementation of the Second Vatican Council’s groundbreaking declaration, “Nostra Aetate,” which redefined and set a new direction for Catholic-Jewish relations after nearly two millennia of mistrust. Rabbi Rudin sets the context for the mid- to late 20thcentury story he tells by going back to its beginnings in the New Testament, a collection of books written by Jews for other Jews presenting a Jewish case for the significance of the life and teaching of the Jew, Jesus. for Jesus met with a great deal of success among Jews, as St. Paul noted, and Christianity spread throughout the then-known world virtually wherever there were Jewish communities to receive its “good news.” Many Jews, however, did not accept what the increasingly gentile church had to say about Jesus, and the fathers of the church shifted their argument from one for Jesus into one against Jews and Judaism. Despite the positive teachings of St. Augustine and many of the popes regarding Judaism, the treatment of Jews in Christian Europe gradually deteriorated over the centuries. Rabbi Rudin commendably does not oversimplify this long and complex history, though he accurately describes the record “overall” as “a bleak one,” laying the groundwork for the Holocaust. Rabbi Rudin sketches quite well the parallel Catholic and Jewish immigrant experiences in the United States, together excluded from “proper” neighborhoods, jobs and schools. Cardinal apologizes for comments about Jews in TV debate SYDNEY (CNS) – Cardinal George Pell of Sydney apologized for comments he made about ancient Jews and German suffering during World War II in a televised debate with author and acknowledged atheist Richard Dawkins. The cardinal said in a statement April 11 to J-Wire, a Jewish online news service, that his comments during the Australian Broadcasting Corp. program “Q & A” April 9 “did not come out as I would have preferred in the course of the discussion.” “My commitment to friendship with the Jewish community and my esteem for the Jewish faith is a matter of public record, and the last thing I would want to do is give offense to either,” Cardinal Pell said. In one exchange with the program’s host, Cardinal Pell referred to the ancient Jews as people who were “intellectually” inferior to ancient Egyptians and Persians. He also described
ancient Jews as “morally inferior” to their pagan neighbors. He said in his statement that he should have described the ancient Jews as “‘historically’ or ‘culturally’ unequal.” “My reference to ‘morally’ was interrupted,” he explained, “but ... I would never describe the Jewish people at any stage as morally inferior to their pagan neighbors. I was attempting to establish a counter poise to my earlier comment when interrupted.” He also said during the program in response to a question about suffering and the Holocaust that, referring to World War II, “probably no people in history have been punished the way the Germans were.” The cardinal said he was attempting to cite the work of Jewish writer David Berlinski, whose “thoughts point us to the mysterious ways in which great crimes are sometimes brought home to those who have committed them.”

American bishops who were, collectively, in the forefront of the great battles at the council over one of its shortest yet most revolutionary documents. The speech Cardinal Richard J. Cushing of Boston gave at the council, narrated in riveting fashion by Rabbi Rudin, and the behind-thescenes political activities of Cardinal Francis J. Spellman of New York were, indeed, instrumental in the ultimate, overwhelming passage of the document. Reading this book makes one feel very good about being an American Catholic! Rabbi Rudin’s story of New York Cardinal John J. O’Connor’s involvement in Jewish-Catholic relations in the 1980s and 1990s is a more personal one, since he knew Cardinal O’Connor well and worked with him on numerous joint projects over the years. It takes nothing away from Cardinal O’Connor’s important role, nationally and internationally, in Catholic-Jewish relations in the post-Vatican II era to note that a book featuring three other cardinals in that period would be equally appropriate. They are Cardinals John F. Dearden of Detroit, Joseph L. Bernardin of Chicago and William H. Keeler of Baltimore. The first two were the architects of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, while Cardinal Keeler was for years in charge of the dialogue nationally and a key adviser to the Holy See.
