WINTER SKIN… SOS!

It’s back! That time of year when the weather turns cold and nature’s moisturizer “humidity” is almost non-existent. So what does this mean for your skin?

As cold air moves in and humidity moves out, the hydration levels of your skin drop dramatically, and can cause damage to the skins’ barrier. When the barrier wall is dehydrated it creates damage and accelerates the aging process. Now ladies, I know this is exactly what we are trying to prevent, am I right?

So, what happens to our skin when hydration levels drop?

DAMAGE TO THE BARRIER WALL = DULL SKIN

The absence of moisture in the air is the primary cause of dull skin in the winter months. Moisture is required for the skin barrier to function properly and to create lipids. Dry skin = NO GLOW!

FINE LINES + DEEP WRINKLES

When the barrier wall is dehydrated it is forced to collapse affecting the elasticity in the skin, resulting in fine lines + wrinkles, superficial + deep.

BREAKOUTS

When you lose hydration in the skin, your body naturally produces more sebum to compensate, causing your skin to breakout even more.

INFLAMMATION

People who suffer from Rosacea know that cold weather and dry air is one of the most common triggers of Rosacea’s flare-ups. So the question is… How can we have HEALTHY + GLOWING skin during the winter months? It is easier than you think, just pick up the phone.

CAMILLE’S RECOMMENDATIONS

DermaGlowFacial Never been dermaplaned before? Winter is the best time to start! Your dehydrated skin will absolutely GLOW after this treatment. This customized facial includes: a cleanse, dermaplaning, red light therapy, glycolic or lactic peel, a customized mask, vitaminrich serums and hydration. NO TWO FACIALS ARE EVER THE SAME!

20% or 30% Glycolic Peel Peels have come a long way since Samantha Jones and her beehive hat! Glycolic peels work by weakening the bonds that hold dead, damaged cells on the surface of the skin, in turn improving cell renewal rate, and the appearance of skin tone + texture. Glycolic Acid has also been proven to support the skin’s production of structural proteins needed for skin health. These peels work at the molecular level with no flaking or downtime.

Red Light Therapy Treatment RLT

Treatments aren’t only good for the antiaging process, it’s good for the soul as well! LightStim is a medical grade red light that strengthens the barrier wall, produces collagen, improves fine lines + wrinkles, and tightens the skin. It also gives you 30 minutes all to yourself, to relax, feel the warmth, and enjoy that light we so crave during the winter months.

LET’S TALK ‘AT HOME’ REGIMENS

Your best defense is taking care of your skin at home by using high quality, low # of ingredients, medical grade products. It’s true what they say… you get what you pay for.

CAMILLE’S FAVORITES!

Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 #1 seller at Downtown Beauty Bar and my absolute favorite product OF ALL TIME! This anti-aging moisturizer is full of Cholesterol, Ceramides and Fatty Acids to replenish essential skin lipids and support healthy skin barrier function. For all skin types. I also use it for my eye cream, 2 in 1.

HA Intensifier This miracle worker amplifies the skins hyaluronic levels by 30% and strengthens the barrier wall. I layer it under my Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 in the winter months for additional hydration. For all skin types.

Retinol Simply put, retinol is your secret weapon in complementing skin’s natural renewal process, allowing radiant-looking new skin while sloughing off dead skin. This derivative from Vitamin A works by boosting the skin’s surface renewal process and helps to strengthen skin’s foundation to minimize the appearance of age spots, improve skin texture, fine lines + wrinkles.

Gentle Cleanser This cleanser is calming to our winter skin, yet affectively removes surface debris and long lasting make-up. It has a 3% concentration of allantoin, glycerin, and orange oil, to keep our skin barrier intact and retain moisture. For all skin types.

I absolutely loved writing this “Winter Skin” column for you. I have such a deep passion for helping my clients look and feel beautiful and to help you achieve your skin goals. Remember… glowing skin doesn’t happen by chance, it happens by appointment!

Happy New Year to you and your families and to a GLOWING 2023!

Redfield made sure to set a good example for her kids with her dedication and work ethic. “I still do with my grandchildren,” she noted.

“I think that they have a lot of respect for my sense of business and how hard I work,” Redfield explained. “Real Estate was always a topic of conversation in our household.”

Today, Redfield’s daughters are both managers at the business. They both worked in the office as teenagers and during college. They have worked their way up

Not only does Redfield trust her daughters with the daily office operations, but she also knows they can field any questions from our agents. “They have gained so much respect in the business from our agents as well as the other offices and our clients. They are educated in our industry and technology, and on top of their other duties, they give classroom and one-on-one training to our agents,” said Redfield.

Redfield’s husband of neary 53 years, Craig, is retired from Verizon, but he also has his real estate license and helps at the office. Redfield has three grandchildren, Bailey, Kayley and Charlie, and a great-grandson, Noah. •

Molnar Funeral Homes

■ If a business is only as good as the team that runs it, then Molnar Funeral Homes is top tier.

As the leading funeral service Downriver and in the surrounding area, Molnar is dedicated to providing exceptional service to every family that entrusts them with their loved ones. Since its founding in 1923 by Hungarian immigrant, John Molnar Sr., Molnar Funeral Homes has been owned and operated by the same family.

Following the untimely death of both John Molnar Sr. and his son, John F. Molnar in the late 50’s, the business has experienced tremendous growth and flourished to acquire their third and fourth locations in 2016.

Today, Molnar is led by licensed funeral directors, Angela M. Molnar-Ferguson, of the 4th generation, and her husband, Larry A. Ferguson. Although in semi-retirement,

John S. Molnar, of the 3rd generation, remains a steadfast presence in the daily operations.

In its near century since opening, Molnar has not only grown from a home-based funeral home to four unique and beautifully appointed chapels, but they have also expanded their services and cultivated a team of compassionate professionals who are proud to serve families during a difficult time. Molnar offers burial services, on-site cremation, preplanning services, and a one of a kind graphic design center. They have the ability to make custom keepsakes for families, ensuring memorable celebrations of life. All of this has been made possible with the help of the talented Molnar team.

The Molnar team consists of 15 licensed funeral directors including John, Angela, and Larry; two pre-need specialists; and many team members including graphic designers, administrative assistants, support staff, and maintenance that help the business thrive. While not all from the Downriver area, Angela says “We are an integral part of the communities that we are located in, and fortunate to have several employees involved in both civic and community organizations.”

Several team members have even been with Molnar Funeral Homes for over 25 years, and because of their varied talents and experiences, the team is well equipped to assist families with whatever they may need. In many ways the team is an extension of the Molnar family. They’ve always fostered an environment where team members can come to work and make a difference. At the end of the day, they truly care about one another in the same way any family would by being there for each other through life’s biggest milestones. Even as the business has grown exponentially over the years, a strong foundation ensures their promise to each and every family remains the same –they are with you every step of the way.

“‘We are with you every step of the way’ means being with a family from the moment they call us to handle services for their loved one, during the time they are with us, and even after services are completed,” explains Angela. “Our commitment to the families we serve never ends and we are always here.”

Faith and Blue 2022

“Faith and Blue has shown that officers are just regular people who just happen to have a badge on their chest. It’s built these relationships between the officers and everyone within the community and we are proud of that !”

LT. ANDREW STARZEC has been proudly serving the Brownstown Police Department for almost nineteen years and was promoted to Lieutenant in 2020 where he has continued to stay active within his community through his work with the Woodhaven-Brownstown Rotary.

Today, he also runs the Brownstown Police Department chaplain group and Honor Guard and is a key figure in running the now annual Faith and Blue event for Brownstown.

munity Oriented Policing. They’re the ones who through the Department of Justice really try to get agencies to work better with the community and have better relationships with everyone,” Lt. Starzec explained.

He went on to share, “They came up with the program and the plan was to simply have the police agencies interacting in some form or fashion with a faith-based organization within their jurisdiction to touch base with as many people as possible. It wasn’t about the religious aspect, but just having that base that they believed was a good way to get the conversation going.”

The Brownstown Police Department learned of the event in early 2021 and held their first event then. They invited every single religious organization within Brownstown to come out to essentially a potluck with everyone bringing a dish they loved or one that represented their culture.

The event was such a huge success that the National Faith and Blue Group selected the event as their spotlight of the year. Lt.Starzec also went on to speak about the event at the Taking Action For Peace Conference.

The Brownstown 2022 Faith and Blue event was even larger, and the department has already secured the community center for next year’s event and is looking into starting another event that would include the fire department and local politicians as well.

Says Lt. Starzec, “Faith and Blue has shown that officers are just regular people who just happen to have a badge on their chest. It’s built these relationships between the officers and everyone within the community and we are proud of that!” •

Faith & Blue was started by MovementForward, Inc., working with the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services at the U.S.Department of Justice.

For those looking to get in shape while also learning defensive martial arts, there’s likely no better place to go than one of 9Round Kickbox ing Fitness’s nine locations in the Detroit area. 9Round’s location in Woodhaven is owned by Ketura Brandes, a health and fitness extraordinaire and mother of five who also owns Enviro-Master of Metro Detroit North with her husband Corey.

“I didn’t find 9Round, 9Round found me,” said Brandes. She was drawn to the 9Round family by how easy it was to fit 9Round training into her busy schedule compared to other fitness locations, with new workout rounds starting every three minutes.

Brandes and her staff train in kickboxology, jiu-jitsu, and more every month so that they always have something new to teach members, be they long-time kickboxers or beginners. T Avery

SILVIA COUNTS

Wellness Rising Health Coaching

Wellness Rising Health Coaching is a health and wellness program dedicated to setting clients down a personalized, health-focused path in ways most physicians and doctors simply can’t.

“It really is a passion to help people become the happiest, healthiest, highest versions of themselves,” shared Silvia Counts, creator of Wellness Rising and Master Certified Transformational Health Coach.

Having worked in pharmaceutical sales for 20 years, Counts already has a history in

the health industry, though perhaps on the opposite end of the scale. After realizing her path, purpose, and calling was to lead other people to wellness, Counts returned to school for her health and life coach certification and continues to educate herself in wellness today.

Wellness Rising’s 12-week program is designed to be more hands-on than similar wellness programs. Counts personally spends an hour with clients every week over the phone or over Zoom in order to narrow down on their goals, blockages, and self-limiting beliefs. Rather than simply giving clients “how-to” and “to-do'' lists, her program focuses on three levels of self (behavior, belief, and identity) to help clients form healthy and permanent habits.

“It’s a habit-change methodology that helps them change,” said Counts. “It’s not like a quick ‘lose weight in 60 days’ challenge, it’s a lifestyle change for them.” Sundra Hilsinger

Fitness should be fun !

f you’re a fan of Pilates and live Downriver, you’ve probably already visited (or at least heard of) Body Energy Fitness in Woodhaven. This dynamic fitness and Pilates studio was first opened in 2013 by fitness extraordinaire Tracy Pighin, who has spent years creating a welcoming and safe atmosphere for people to work out, socialize, and better themselves.

“We try to have as much fun here as possible. Fitness should be fun,” said Pighin. “Sometimes Pilates in general has an ‘oh, I can’t do that’ kind of attitude, but when you come here, you learn very quickly that is not the case. Pilates is fitness for everyone.”

Pighin has dedicated herself to being the best trainer she can since 2006 and continues to further educate herself on fitness, Pilates, and health techniques today. At Body Energy Fitness, she does group and personal training and enjoys teaching both equally. “I love the one-on-one where you can break things down, but I also love when you get a group of people and everybody’s there to have a good time,” Pighin shared. “Our studio is really about ‘come as you are’ …We’d like for you to work hard and smart.”

Body Energy Fitness Pilates Studio is located at 22321 King Rd., Woodhaven. Please call 734-288-3236 for more information.

SHERBROOK

No Sugar Momma

Looking for a way to cut down on her carbs and gluten but unable to find any health-focused bakeries for hundreds of miles, Jennifer Sherbrook decided to start baking her own sugar-free recipes while working at Wayne State University. In 2021, she opened No Sugar Momma, a bakery dedicated to providing sugar-free and other healthy treats that still taste delicious.

“It’s a lot of trial and error with glutenfree and low carb recipes without sugar,” shared Sherbrook. “My daughter had the idea of posting them on Facebook Marketplace… We had an unbelievable amount of orders. Like, one thousand dollars worth of orders on the second weekend.”

Following her online success, Sherbrook picked up sugar-free baking as a part-time weekend gig. She eventually branched out to farmer’s markets until finally finding a storefront in Trenton that her baked goods could call home.

No Sugar Momma’s most popular treat was originally Sherbrooks’ chocolate chip cookies, though her cupcakes are now the number one seller. Other unique treats include sugar-free peanut butter bars that taste almost like Reese’s, seasonal items like pumpkin bars, and their styled cakes that can be special-ordered for almost any diet.

No Sugar Momma is located at 2029 West Rd. in Trenton, and can be reached at 734-307-3022.

ABOUT

The StoryWalk Project

The idea of Wegienka Elementary's StoryWalk began when Sarah Noto, Wegienka’s speech pathologist, was walking in downtown Wyandotte and noticed the framed reading stations displayed around the area.

Noto realized that an actual storybook was contained in the frames, and thought it would be a great enhancement to Wegienka’s walking path. She shared the idea with colleague Stephanie Guimond and once both did some research, they discovered that the frames were actually part of The StoryWalk Project.

Noto and Guimond presented the addition of the StoryWalk displays to the walking path to Principal Michelle Briegel. Their thought was this would be a great way to bring families together for some exercise and at the same time help build literacy in our community.

Briegel agreed with Noto and Guimond’s idea and applied for a grant from a local philanthropic foundation. Their efforts paid off, and Briegel received word in August 2022 that Wegienka Elementary would be being awarded a grant to add the StoryWalk to Wegienka’s walking path.

What is StoryWalk?

StoryWalk combines physical activity with literacy; it’s an innovative way to get people of all ages out walking while reading children's picture books – pages of a book are transfered to signs that are placed on a trail inviting people to follow the path of the pages. The goal of StoryWalk is to help build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity.

WBSD’s Support Services Department spent time in late September, 2022 installing the StoryWalk frames along Wegienka’s walking path. Wegienka Elementary hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrate the display install. Briegel told those in attendance, “I’m excited that this is a permanent installation to encourage the love of reading.”

The entire school participated in the ceremony and Briegel acted as Master of Ceremonies. Student Council members read a poem and both Noto and Guimond spoke about the journey. Students enjoyed walking the path, and reading the story before heading back to their classes.

Look for a new story each month on Wegienka's walking path. You won't want to miss it! l
