ON THE RISE ONCE CONSIDERED TO BE AN ANTI SOCIAL AND RECKLESS PAST TIME, SKATEBORDING AND LONG BOARDING HAVE INCREASED IN POPULARITY, DUE TO MORE OPTIONS AND VENUES AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. Skateboarding is an action sport or activity that requires practice and perseverance. Though the primary purpose of the sport is to perform and master tricks, some people like to ride it recreationally. The activity can also be considered as an art form, job or method of transportation. Skateboarding since its inception was closely tied to the surfing culture in the United States but has since evolved into its own image with its own unique following and Much like surfing, skateboarding has become a multi-billion dollar sport merchandising industry. The key ingredient of athletic performance in powerlifting is strength. A powerlifting athlete competes in three specific trials, each designed to measure different human strengths. At the end of the competition the athlete with the best lift in each trial is the winner.
The Springbok colors has stopped being awarded, apart from rugby, to all sportsmen and women in 1993. The SAPF is one of 87 member nations of the International Powerlifting Federation, which, in turn, is aligned to the World Games Association, the GAISF which is a member of the International Olympic Committee. The SAPF is fully subscribed with the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport and the IOC’s drug testing policies. Lifters are tested in and out of competitions for substance abuse.
ABOUT THE SOUTH AFRICAN POWERLIFTING FEDERATION The only powerlifting federation recognized and registered with Sport and Recreation South Africa and SASCOC is the South African Powerlifting Federation.
THERE ARE THREE TRIALS IN POWERLIFTING NAMELY:
As they are the only Powerlifting Federation with permission to give out South African colors (the protea) to power lifters representing the country internationally.
SQUAT BENCH PRESSING DEADLIFT
The lift starts with the lifter standing erect and the bar loaded with weights resting on the lifters shoulders. At the referee's command the lift begins. The lifter bends his knees and lowers himself into a squatting position with the hips slightly below parallel position. The lifter returns to an erect position. At the referees command the bar is returned to the rack and the lift is completed CONTINUES TO

With his or her back resting on the bench, the lifter takes the loaded bar at arm’s length. At the referee’s command the power lifter lowers the bar to the chest. On the chest there must be a visible pause. The power lifter pushes the weight up until the arms are straight and the elbows locked. Then the referee will call ‘rack’ and the lift is completed as the weight is retuned to the rack.
The deadlift is often described as the king of the powerlifting disciplines. In the deadlift the athlete grasps the loaded bar which is resting on the platform floor. The power lifter pulls the weights off the floor and assumes a standing erect position. The knees must be locked and shoulders back with the weight held in the lifters’s grip. At the referees command the bar will be returned to the floor under the control of the lifter. POWERLIFTING IN SOUTH AFRICA The first powerlifting competitions were organized in the early 1960s. Powerlifting has a steady growth and at present there are over 500'000 athletes. The International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) governs all competitions in 92 member nations. The IPF has a banned substance abuse policy that mirrors the IOC's policy. AFRICAN PENGUIN Spheniscus Demersus THE AFRICAN PENGUIN HAS BEEN CLASSIFIED AS ENDANGERED SINCE 2010 LARGELY DUE TO COMMERCIAL FISHERIES AND SHIFTS IN PREY POPULATION. THE SPECIES IS ENDEMIC TO SOUTHERN AFRICA AND CAN BE FOUND IN ANGOLA, MOZAMBIQUE, NAMIBIA AND SOUTH AFRICA. The bird, also known as the Black-footed penguin or the Jackass penguin is part of the family Spehiscidae, is approximately 60 cm tall and black in white in colour. In 2015 the overall number of pairs was about 25,000 pairs, or 50,000 mature individuals. The population in Namibia declined from 12,162 pairs in 1978 to an estimated 5,800 pairs in 2015. The South African population declined from 70,000 pairs in 1978/79 to 19,300 pairs in 2015. Decreases in both countries amount to more than 50% in three generations. JUN | JUL 2017

This species is marine, and usually found within 40 km of the coast, coming ashore on islands or at noncontiguous areas of the mainland coast to breed, moult and rest. They usually feed within 20 km of the colony when breeding, although at some colonies the distance is greater. THREATS Population declines have been attributed to food shortages, resulting from shifts in the distributions of prey species, competition with commercial purse-seine fisheries and environmental fluctuations (e.g. Crawford et al. 2011). Other threats include human disturbance, eggcollecting and oil spills.
CONSERVATION EFFORTS The Namibian Islands’ Marine Protected Area (NIMPA), proclaimed in 2009, protects almost 10,000 km2 of ocean in southern Namibia, including all penguin breeding localities and key foraging habitats. Oiled birds are rehabilitated with success. More than 80% of birds admitted for rehabilitation are returned successfully to the wild. Lost nesting habitat has been augmented using artificial nests at a number of colonies. Some designs have proved successful, increasing breeding success. In South Africa, the African penguin Biodiversity Management plan, gazetted in 2013, is guiding the conservation actions to be implemented.

Bring water and salt to a boil in a large heavy saucepan. Add the mielie meal and mix together well with a wooden spoon. (The consistency you get the pap will not change with cooking. So make sure it is the texture you want it at this stage.)
Heat the grill on high heat. Cook the borewors for 5 minutes. Flip and cook for another 5 minutes. (Do not prick the sausage while cooking. You don’t want to lose all the juice). Remove from the grill and let it rest for 5 minutes.
Heat the oil in a sauté pan on medium heat. Cook the onions with the chilli flakes and coriander until golden brown (8 minutes). Add the tomatoes, ketchup, woestershire sauce, sugar and water.

YOUR FIRST As a new employee to any organisation, you often have the expectation that you will start by “hitting the ground running”, however this is not the case. In your first month you will most likely be bombarded with introductions, loads of information, reading material, orientation meetings and even training sessions. Though all of these things will ultimately aid you in your primary task of settling in and doing the job you were hired to do very well, there are still some other things to do in your first month at your new job.

A business must evolve with the times to remain current and relevant to its audience and target market. Employees are no different. If new possibilities arise that you prove capable of handling, you show your employer that you are reliable and trustworthy and might be rewarded for your actions.
It is very difficult to change a first impression. Always dress and present yourself for the job you want, not the job you have. Similarly, always be prepared to introduce yourself and what you do in a manner that is intriguing or interesting to the person you are engaging with. PROFUSION MAGAZINE

HINTS WHAT PERSONALITY TYPE ARE YOU?
THE NURTURING
Are you looking for a great way to boost your immune system, reduce your stress, improve your sleeping pattern and even cure depression? Then you need to consider hugging. Hugging rejuvenates and invigorates and has absolutely no side effects, because there is no medicine involved. No medicines means nothing to worry about, no pesticides or preservatives, no artificial ingredients and no worries at all.
JUN | JUL 2017
A famous psychotherapist named Virginia Satir once said that 4 hugs a day would help you survive, 8 hugs a day would maintain you and 12 hugs a day would help you grow. While this may not be scientifically proven there is actually a lot of evidence that shows the importance of receiving regular hugs. The nurturing touch of a hug builds trust and a sense of safety. Hugs can instantly boost oxytocin levels, which heal feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anger. Holding a hug for an extended time lifts one’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness. Hugging therapy is definitely a powerful way of healing. Hugging is extremely effective at healing sickness, disease, loneliness, depression, anxiety and stress.

EVERY ISSUE
Hugging boosts self-esteem. From the time we’re born our family’s touch shows us that we’re loved and special. The cuddles we received from our Mom and Dad while growing up remain imprinted at a cellular level, and hugs remind us at a somatic level of that. Hugs, therefore, connect us to our ability to self love. Hugging relaxes muscles and release tension in the body. Hugs can take away pain; they soothe aches by increasing circulation into the soft tissues. It balances out the nervous system and the galvanic skin response of someone receiving and giving a hug shows a change in skin conductance. The effect in moisture and electricity in the skin suggests a more balanced state in the nervous system parasympathetic. Hugs teach us how to give and receive. There is equal value in receiving and being receptive to warmth, as to giving and sharing. It educate us how love flows both ways. Hugs are so much like meditation and laughter. They teach us to let go and be present in the moment. They encourage us to flow with the energy of life. Hugs get you out of your circular thinking patterns and connect you with your heart and your feelings and your breath. The energy exchange between the people hugging is an investment in the relationship. It encourages empathy and understanding. PROFUSION MAGAZINE
Have you ever had the kind of busy day that perhaps leaves you feeling a bit physically disconnected and you rarely notice this until someone comes up and places a hand on your back to get your attention, and your brain says, “Wow…that felt really good.” The simplest human touch when one isn’t expecting it, or even when one is expecting it, can deliver such joy and contentment. A hug is a step up, and so many of us don’t meet our daily hug quota. Hugging does not only boosts your immune system and reduce stress, but can also be a fantastic way of communicating without words with another person. Hugging one person can cause that person to feel the urge to hug other people too, thus improving everyone’s day. It boost your self esteem, this is especially true for children as the sense of touch is extremely important for infants as it is how they recognize their parents. Hugging your child shows that you love them and that they are special. This improves their feelings of self worth throughout their youth.

There are many board games in existence with a variety of styles and rules needed to play and some are more popular than others. Some games like Scrabble, Monopoly and Twister have even managed to make it to the Hall of Fame. Here are some little known facts worth mentioning for some of these popular games. JUN | JUL 2017
The name Scrabble comes from the words Scrabbling, Scrabbled and Scrabbles – all of which means to claw or scrape at something frantically. These words all derive from the Dutch word ‘Schrabbelan’, which most likely integrated into American diction from Dutch settlers to North America. PROFUSION MAGAZINE

With 64 squares on a chess board, it’s impossible to imagine more than a couple of thousand outcomes of a game. However, after each player has had four moves, there are more than 318 billion possible positions. As chess players know, pawns can move either one space or two spaces on their first move. This is a rule which was brought about by the Spaniards in 1280. Chess originated from India in the 6th century. Alongside Sudoku and other puzzles and games, chess has been named as one of the best ways to improve the mind and the memory. Patients with Alzheimer’s are often encouraged to play chess in their spare time, and it has been introduced in many schools for young students. In some cases, it has been seen to enhance the test results of school children, and scientists have been known to argue that chess can actually increase intelligence levels.
The Rubiks Cube is over 40 years old and was first sold in Budapest Toy shop in 1975. Previously called the Magic Cube, the Rubiks cube in 1980. Rubik wanted a working model to help explain three dimensional geometry. It took him over a month to solve his own puzzle.

Accountants compile and analyse financial information by applying principles of accounting. They prepare such financial information to complete entries into accounts such as the general ledger accounts that document business transactions. Accountants detail assets, liabilities and capital in order to prepare a balance sheet, profit and loss statement and other reports for the individual or company employing them. The accountant prepares the various reports in order to summarize the current and projected financial position of the company or individual concerned.

JULY, 1943
The 12th July 1943 is an important date in history, marking the Battle between German and Russian forces in Kursk, Russia.
After the catastrophe at Stalingrad, the German army had been forced to regroup and stabalise their forces and so they retreated to Eastern Ukraine.
Considered to be the largest tank battle in history, where around 900 Russian tanks attacked an equal number of German forces at close range.
With their failure to take Stalingrad, the city named after Russia’s leader - Stalin, Hitler became desperate, calling on men who were formerly exempt from the war, to fill out the ranks he had lost in the failed attacks on Moscow, Stalingrad and Caucarus.

It is reported that over 2 million German soldiers were lost during Germany’s failed attempt to take the noteable cities. By Spring 1943, Hitler had managed to rebuild his forces to over half a million soldiers, stationed near Kursk. Similar to their previous attempts, Germany had underestimated the capacity and quality of Russia’s forces. On Sunday, 11th July, the German Punzers were meant to probe the village for a weak spot behind Russia’s defences and it was purely by accident that they met head on with Russia’s reserve formation of 850 tanks. This resulted in the largest single tank battle ever fought as the two sides blasted away at each other at close range repeatedly for 8 hours, nonstop.
For Hitler, the situation at Kursk was looking bleaker by the day, not to mention the bad news stemming from the arrival of British and American forces on the isle of Sicily, bringing a whole new front to the war. Thus far the Kursk gamble had cost German forces around 70 000 men, 3000 tanks and 1400 planes, that would be irreplaceable. For the Russian’s the Battle of Kursk was a major turning point in the war and a great turning point in the nation’s history. Seizing the momentum, the Russians began a general advance along a thousand mile front, pushing back the Germans at every turn, thus reclaiming captured Russian cities along the way. WHAT TO DO IN A

GOING TO AN AREA WHERE YOU COULD CONTRACT MALARIA? NO NEED TO PANIC. YOU CAN ENJOY YOUR TRIP WITHOUT BECOMING INFECTED
A
lmost everyone enjoys travelling but it is not without risk. In some areas, malaria is one of the biggest hazards that tourists face. This guide will tell you what you should be doing when visiting an area where you might contract the disease. WHAT IS MALARIA? Some mosquitoes are host to a dangerous parasite called Plasmodium and they are common in parts of Africa, Asia and South America. Malaria is contracted by a small mosquito bite and there are four types to be aware of: Plasmodium Falciparum, Plasmodium Vivax and Plasmodium Ovale are relatively harmless. It is the fourth and final type, Plasmodium Malariae that is most likely to result in severe illness and death.

WHAT YOU CAN DO It is not all doom and gloom when heading to a high risk area. There is much that you can do to ensure you are protected while you are there. PREVENTING MALARIA IS EASILY ACHIEVED IN FOUR STEPS:
PROFUSION MAGAZINE
Being aware of the fact that you are going to an area known for malaria is the first step. Research the area before you leave. Always ask your travel agent if the destination is high risk and if so, by how much. The International Association for Medical Assistance to Travellers (IAMAT) has an informative website available, with a useful PDF guide on malaria areas. If you are pressed for time, consult with your doctor and travel agent to find out the details.
There are various anti-malarial medications available. Be sure to inform your doctor about any allergies you may have, so that you are prescribed something that works for you. While some believe that bite prevention alone will prevent the contraction of malaria, this is not entirely true. The choice is yours whether you wish to take preventative medication, but know that you have a much higher risk of getting sick without it.
Now that you know you are visiting an area with a high risk of malaria, you must be proactive about preventing bites. Repellents are available in aerosol, cream or stick form and are applied directly to the skin. Wear long sleeves, pants or skirts to prevent mosquitoes gaining access to your skin and reduce the need for repellents. This may sound unbearable in the tropical heat, but cotton is excellent for keeping you cool. Close all windows and doors at night and avoid burning lights that will attract them. Use a mosquito net when sleeping. If used alone, none of these solutions guarantee leaving uninfected. Instead they work together to keep you free from bites.
Even with the best intentions and responsible prevention techniques, you may still succumb to malaria. Should this occur, get yourself to the doctor immediately. It is imperative that you are knowledgeable about the symptoms because early treatment is vital. It is also extremely helpful if you know what the problem is, which will make it easier for doctors to diagnose you correctly. Depending on the severity of the illness, your doctor will decide what treatment strategy to take. If you experience any of the following symptoms, get treated as soon as possible: • Fever • Chills • Headaches • Fatigue • Sweating • Nausea • Vomiting
While nobody wants to be taking medication on holiday, it is vital that you visit your doctor and take what is prescribed to you. PROFUSION MAGAZINE

HEALTH CARE NEEDS How to determine which medical aid scheme is best suited for you now and in future
BY CARLA LETCHMAN CFPÂŽ COMPETENCY SPECIALIST OF CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL PLANNING INSTITUTE
C
hoosing the appropriate medical aid scheme, or supplementary medical insurance product, is a much more complex task than one would think. This should be discussed with a certified financial planner. The medical scheme that you choose now might not be sufficient in a year or two. As you go through different life stages, your needs might change; this must be taken into account towards the later part of every year, seeing as this is when most medical schemes allow you to change your medical aid option. Changes made at the end of the year would be effective in the following year. It is important to know the difference between a medical scheme and a medical insurance product. A medical scheme cannot legally turn you away;
JUN | JUL 2017
they are obliged to allow you to become a member, as long as you pay their required premium or contribution. They can employ penalties like late joiner premium’s and waiting periods. The medical scheme will not pay you, but rather your medical provider. A medical scheme is governed by the Medical Schemes Act (131 of 1998). Further, the medical scheme industry is overseen by a regulator, known as the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS). A medical insurance product is not governed by the Medical Schemes Act; rather it is governed by the Short-Term Insurance Act (58 of 1998). The insurance company can turn you away based on your risk profile, or alternatively, your premium may be adjusted accordingly.

Therefore, unlike a medical scheme, a medical insurance product will be priced differently for different people, based on their risk assessment. The insurance company will also provide the insured with the stipulated amount, as per the contract, and will not pay the medical practitioner or hospital directly. There is a clear demarcation that exists between a medical scheme and a medical insurance product. A medical scheme has a social role to play and is therefore registered as a not-for-profit business, whereas a medical insurance product will guard against a specific risk. Both have their place. It should be noted that the demarcation of a medical scheme and a medical insurance product is in the process of being legislated. National Treasury released the second draft of Demarcation Regulations between health insurance policies and medical schemes for comment earlier this year. There were still many contentious issues in the second draft. The private healthcare system is currently under review by the Competition Commission. An individual’s medical scheme requirements may differ according to their life stage. A young, healthy adult may only need hospital cover for emergencies and unforeseen events. A young individual, who wants to start a family, must make sure that they have sufficient maternity and day-to-day benefits. If you are older than 40, or if your health has taken a turn for the worse, you need to have sufficient chronic medication cover. PROFUSION MAGAZINE
Your family’s health history is also an indication of the cover you might need, and when. In addition to your needs, you must also be able to afford the costs. Some of the reasons for increased costs would be the age of the principal member, the spouse and children, and whether or not they have previously been on a medical scheme. Late joiner penalties could be applied, as well as waiting periods. During the waiting period, there might be costs that you need to cover from your own pocket. If the individual currently has medical aid exclusions, this could also impact the cost. All of these potential costs must be assessed by your financial planner. For example, your late joiner penalty could have been calculated incorrectly. Your financial planner will also be able to help you ascertain whether you can afford any self-payment gaps or co-payments. This is where a health insurance product can be of assistance. Finally, as part of your financial plan, you need to consider contributing to a savings vehicle to subsidise your medical scheme contributions after retirement. Your medical needs analysis should not be done in isolation, which is why it is important to consult with a certified financial planner. They will be able to assist you with a holistic financial plan.
