Paragliding is a mostly a recreational activity that is indulged by the brave outdoors type and if you have a fear of heights, this one may not be for you. Calories are a unit of measurement that calculates the energy your body needs to maintain itself and run correctly. There is a misconception that calories are bad for you but this isn’t correct. Eating too many calories in a day and not burning them off on the other hand can lead to unwanted weight gain. Unfortunately, we are not always creatures of habit and monitoring the daily allowance of food you eat and calories you consume can be tedious and even if you had the time, would you really need to check every packet and calculate your portion size and what would you do if your package didn’t have a breakdown? To help you with portion control, it is often helpful to train yourself to serve on a smaller plate size. The plate size will look fuller than your larger dinner plate.
TAKE YOUR MEAL TIMES SERIOUSLY Though this sounds ridiculous, consider for a moment what you do during your meal times. As multi-taskers in a fast paced world, we often do not do one thing at a time and lunch and dinner times are often consumed with other tasks whilst we are giving our bodies the fuel they need to run. Take your meal times seriously and develop a sit down ritual that doesn’t involve electronics. The lack of electronics will let you focus on your meal and the people you are sharing it with. Similarly, focusing on your food and your immediate surroundings will make you more conscience of the food you are eating.
CHEW YOUR FOOD According to research done by IIFGD or International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder with worldwide prevalence rates ranging generally in the area of 10–15% - Approximately 60% to 65% of individuals who report IBS in the community are female. Dated 10 May 2016. Health Organisations say that you should chew your food slower with soft foods 5 – 10 times and meats and vegetables up to 30 times before swallowing. Chewing your food slower helps with overall breakdown and digestion and helps burn calories and makes you feel fuller faster.

THE GREY CROWNED CRANE IS A BIRD FOUND IN THE EASTERN AND SOUTHERN REGIONS OF AFRICA AND IS THE NATIONAL BIRD OF UGANDA. THIS BIRD WAS LISTED AS AN ENDANGERED SPECIAL ON IUCN’S RED LIST IN 2012 FROM A VULNERABLE STATUS IN 2009. The species has been threatened and is rapidly declining due to habitat loss as well as the illegal removal of the birds and egss from the wild. The grey crowned crane stands about 1 metre tall, weighing around 3.5 kilograms and boasting an average wingspan of 2 metres. Though the plumage on the body of the bird is mainly grey and the wings are mostly white, the Grey crowned crane has a range of other colours in its wings. The head is also crowned with stiff gold feathers and a inflatable red throat pouch.

BEHAVIOURS: These birds are not migratory but may move from a location depending on the abudance and distribution of food, nest sites and rainfall. The general behaviour of this bird whilst breeding is dancing, bowing and jumping. This combined with a booming call, which involves the inflation of its red throat sac, is quite different from the trumpeting of other crane species. The courtship also takes at any time of the year. A flock of 30 - 150 mature individuals is common.
MAJOR THREATS: Besides the loss of natural habitat due to drought and the human consumption of land issues, these birds are also threatened by other factors including the use of harmful pesticides that impact their natural food sources. Research has also found that many of these birds are killed by farm owners annual to avoid crop damage.
Monitoring occurs in at least parts of its range by the International Waterbird Census; in Botswana by BirdLife Botswana; in South Africa, Grey Crowned Cranes are monitored through the Avifaunal Road Counts coordinated by the Animal Demographic Unit at the University of Cape Town and through annual aerial surveys conducted by the EWT and Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife over the range of the species in KwaZulu-Natal, and in Zambia regular surveys for cranes are conducted in Lochinvar, Blue Lagoon, Kafue, South Luangwa, Chikuni, Nsumbu and Liuwa National Parks (K. Morrison in litt. 2016). In Zimbabwe Local Community Conservation Groups/Site Support Groups in Driefontein Grasslands are actively involved in raising the awareness of this species (T. Fakarayi in litt. 2016), and in Rwanda conservation efforts of the International Crane Foundation have started around Rugezi Marsh (Beilfuss and Morrison 2012). This species is listed as Endangered in South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland, and Uganda, and Critically Endangered in Namibia (Morrison and Smith 2015, Simmons 2015, WCS 2016).
There have however been efforts to rehabilitate the species and because of this, the bird is protected by law in some African countries, including South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Kenya.

INSTRUCTIONS
Heat a little oil in a pot, add onions and sautĂŠ until browned. Add chicken and stir well, and then add the spices, garlic and ginger paste, a pinch of salt and the chopped tomato. Pour in 250 ml of water. Cook, then stir for five minutes, and then cover the pot with a lid. Add the potatoes, another 250 ml of water, then cover and simmer on a low heat until the potatoes are soft. Just before serving add the curry leaves and coriander and stir gently. Serve with rice or homemade rotis.

Whenever you’re invited into an appraisal meeting there is always some nerves: Did I achieve my goals? Do they know what I’ve been doing? Can they see my effort? And whilst we’d all hope to receive 100% positive feedback, part of growing in our careers means that we’re likely to hear some difficult truths on where we haven’t met the employer’s expectations or where they believe we can improve. The most important part of these conversations is remaining calm, collected and in control. Here are some key steps to follow:

This is most important. It’s instinctive that when we’re confronted by criticism that we immediately want to refute the statement or argue our point. Don’t. Remember to take a deep breath, pause and stop to think before you speak.

Carefully. Listen to what is being said and the context in which it is being shared. Avoid jumping to conclusions because you stopped listening of the first few words. Let the other person complete their train of thought before interrupting.

None of us is perfect. Acknowledge areas that are of concern, particularly if they relate to your not achieving clear/specific goals, and appreciate that whether real or perceived, the other individual’s perception is their reality.
UNDERSTAND
Ask questions or provide context to ensure that you both clearly understand any areas of concern and why these are important for your role and career development. It’s critically important that you’re “on the same page” in order to find solutions.
RESPOND
Once you’ve understood what the other person has said you should feel confident to respond. Take time to consolidate your thoughts and to clearly express yourself. Keep calm, speak quietly and confidently and try not to let your emotions take control. If you feel that you’ve been unfairly treated, provide examples of why their perception is not correct and take the opportunity to correct any errors of fact.
CLARIFY
For appraisals to be beneficial, areas for development should be identified and with clear remedial actions in place. Seek to understand how you could improve and what resources the company will provide, i.e. training, to assist you in this process. Establish clear timeframes and processes.
COMMIT
Whether you agree 100% or not, the agreements made in regards to areas for development must be honoured. Commit to the process to ensure that you improve in line with the employer’s expectations to make next year’s appraisal a success.

A stroke is an attack on the brain, caused when blood supply is cut off. Without frequent blood supply, the brain cells can be damaged or die. Identifying signs early is the first step to prevention and can help save the individual from permanent brain damage or death. There are two main types of strokes. The most common type, accounting for more than 80% of all strokes is the Ischemic stroke. Like a heart attack, the Ischemic stroke is caused by clotting of the blood vessels of the brain, which prevent blood flow. It is also caused by fatty cells caused by cholesterol affecting blood flow. The second type of stroke occurs when a blood vessel ruptures or breaks. This causes blood to seep out and damage the brain tissue. This type of stroke is known as the hermohagic stroke and is most commonly caused by high blood pressure and brain aneurysms or weaknesses in the blood vessel walls.

With the rise in cancer diagnoses over the past couple of years, there are very few that have been left unscathed in the battle against this disease. Whether it is losing a loved one or supporting a family member through this horrible ordeal, we have all been touched by it in some way. October is breast cancer awareness month and there are various campaigns active to educate the masses about preventative measures, as well as the importance of early detection. On the list of countries with the highest cancer prevalence, South Africa is ranked at number 50. This is the most common cancer diagnosed in females and according to statistics it will affect 1 in 29 South African women in their lifetime. In metropolitan areas this is as high as 1 in 8. Breast cancer is caused by the growth of abnormal cells, yet only 5 – 10% of cases are inherited genetically from your parents. The other 90% are a result of abnormalities that happen as we age.

If breast cancer is detected early enough, nearly 90% of women with the disease will survive. Unfortunately, many are diagnosed too late. By the time they get treatment, the cancer has spread and become too difficult to treat. Specialists insist that it is of utmost importance for women over the age of 35 to have a mammogram at least every three years. Ladies over the age of 50 are advised to have annual mammograms. This enables doctors to detect the primary symptoms of breast cancer, or in some cases, other signs that allow them to prevent or minimize the impact of it on the system. If a mammogram detects a tumour before it is 2cm in diameter, the chances of survival increase to 90%. The sooner breast cancer is detected the more effective the treatment will be. BREAST CANCER AWARENESS Leading a healthy lifestyle will reduce your risk of contracting this disease: Avoid drinking alcohol in excess. Consumption of alcohol is known to increase the risk of breast cancer, so limit your intake to one drink a day. Follow a healthy diet and avoid foods that are high in fat. Exercise regularly to strengthen your immune system. Cancer development can be prevented by taking Vitamin D and antioxidant supplements. Research has found that Omega-3 fats are associated with deterring cancerous tumours in the breast. Smoking is a known risk factor, as is a lack of exercise. Millions of women are affected by this each year. While the disease has a high survival rate, detecting and treating it early is the key to surviving it. Breast cancer awareness has become very prominent in the media with various campaigns running to instill knowledge. As a result, more and more women are realizing the importance of being regularly tested at a younger age. Breast cancer is life threatening if not dealt with responsibly as soon as possible. The importance of awareness and education cannot be emphasized enough. It is necessary for women of all ages to be wise to the factors of breast cancer, diagnostic information, risk factor management, as well as tips on how to survive it. In the information age, there are no excuses for being ignorant about any disease, especially one of such prominence. If we educate younger generations, they will be able to take that information with them throughout their lifetimes, share it readily with others and one day, it may even save their lives.

High Functioning depression is often an invisible illness. It is also referred to as low-grade depression. While it doesn’t completely debilitate a person as severe depression would, it can significantly lower the quality of one’s life. The appearance of high functioning depression can also be a form of camouflage, keeping the struggle hidden and preventing you from getting the correct help that you need. Outwardly, a person with High Functioning depression will still be able to hold down a demanding job, be in relationships, and make all the ooh’s and aah’s at all the right places. Inwardly it’s a whole different punch, they will often go to great lengths to keep up appearances and meet obligations.

Inside is thunderstorm and usually it has gone on for so long that it appears to be part and parcel of their personality, which makes it even more difficult for them to admit that there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. In reality High Functioning Depression (HFD) does not go away on its own and help should be seeked. HFD can lead to more debilitating symptoms if left untreated, which includes mental breakdowns. Rationalization becomes reactive and usually explosive. It can also lead to a host of different issues which include anxiety, panic attack and unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcohol abuse.

If you know someone who has HFD, the best way to support them is to firstly understand that it is not a switch that can just be turned off nor does it discriminate age, gender or even religion. It can affect anyone at any time and tends to linger for years if left untreated. When someone tells you that they think they are depressed or that something is not right, believe them and try assist them in getting the help they need. Unfortunately depression is still such a taboo when spoken about and when someone close to you confides in you, take it seriously. It takes a lot for that person to be open about it. Do not nullify it and try play it down, this is their first cry for help, act on it. Acknowledge that their feelings are real and let them know that you love and support them no matter what. Assist them in finding the correct coping mechanisms and help them celebrate their small victories.
HFD IS BEST TREATED WITH A VARIETY OF TREATMENTS WHICH INCLUDE: Mild Antidepressants: such as Nuzak which helps the brain better manage serotonin (Mood and social behavior neurotransmitter) CBT: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy- it is a long term therapy method that allows you to identify negative thought processes through various mental exercises which breaks the old patterns of negative thought with more positive thoughts and coping mechanisms.
Depression is not contagious but affects everyone that is involved in some way or the other.
Yoga and Mindfulness: This reduces anxiety and teaches a person to live in the now moment. Yoga has scientifically been proven to reduce the symptoms by up to 50% in some patients.

Landing in Hanoi one of the first things that hits you might well be a motorcycle. There is nothing that says “welcome to southeast Asia” quite as much as a near-death road crossing experience. Though it might sound terrifying at first, it’s something you definitely miss when the trip comes to an end. In the country where road rules don’t matter and traffic lights don’t count, looking both ways is an essential survival skill. Making your way through the streets of Hanoi is a challenge, but there are few places as historically beautiful both night and day. Most people choose Hanoi as a base to explore the surrounding attractions, but the city boasts a few hidden gems of its own. The best way to get around Hanoi is on foot, or if you are a little braver, renting a bicycle is a great option. Since Hanoi is a very compact city, it is quite easy to get around and visit all the main attractions without exhausting yourself.

If you are after an historical experience there are multiple museums to visit. One of the most popular being Hỏa Lò Prison, or as it is more affectionately known, The Hanoi Hilton. This site is famous for hosting well known prisoners of war, including John McCain. Next stop on the notso-hidden-gem tour is definitely the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. The construction was funded by donations from across the country to honour their former president (and national hero) for bringing independence to their country once again.

Close to the local favourite Hoan Kiem Lake you can visit Vietnam’s first national university. The temple of literature is the perfect location to relax. The temple was built to honour Confucius and to this day is a place where Confucianism is taught. Another great (and entertaining) way to learn more about the culture is by watching some Vietnamese legends come alive during one of the Water Puppet Performances, they are easy to come by and tickets can be found practically around every corner. Hanoi is strewn with the historical remnants of its conquerors. Lakes and parks hold multiple secrets best explored on foot. Observing the people who call this place home offers a unique insight into a strange and beautiful world. The quirky mix of metropolitan and traditional is striking. Streets lined with the tiniest chairs, people chatting and consuming a combination of fruit and coffee that perfectly combats the stifling heat of the city. When the sun sets and the day cools down (just a bit) a new world is born. The streets fill up, stages are erected and the masses come out to play. The narrow streets of the old quarter are packed with what looks like children’s plastic chairs and tables (occupied by locals and travellers alike), feasts of fruit, coffee and other Vietnamese specialities spread out like a personal buffet. This is the real Hanoi. The Hanoi of locals. Street food vendors outshine any fancy restaurant, cheap beers are sold out of cooler boxes and random conversation with a local looking to sharpen their English skills is a traveller’s right of passage.

The night comes alive. The lights are mesmerising, the music is the backtrack for a world where people from all over come to celebrate this unique place. As quick as it starts though, it dies down. The city that always sleeps. Very little happens after 2am as this is a country of early risers, a good thing as a Hanoi sunrise over one of the many lakes is a beautiful sight. Whether you are looking to admire the French-colonial architecture, the parks or lakes, or simply gorge yourself on the most delicious food that exists, Hanoi has something for everyone. The weekend night market is not to be missed, especially if shopping is your thing, make sure to practice your haggling before buying though. Take a stroll through the old quarter and appreciate the architecture and definitely sample one of the many great restaurants. Say what you will about the cultural and historical significance of this deeply interesting country, the fusion foods that were born from the rich history deserves an entire novel devoted to it. Working your way through all the menus is probably the best way to go, but some must-haves include Bun Cha (grilled pork, a mixture of herbs and noodles), Pho Bo (beef noodle soup, preferably from a small roadside restaurant) and Number one on the list is Cha Ca (turmeric fish with dill) a Hanoi delicacy. There is no summary to this wonderful City, it is an eclectic mixture of people, music and cultures that mixed and birthed an utterly unique place. Everything from the food to the culture leaves a delicious taste in your mouth. A city that it is hard imagining ever getting enough of, with so many nooks and crannies to explore, Hanoi is the perfect place for the insatiable traveller.
