EDITOR’S
It hasn’t been an easy 2018. Lots of political changes, tax increases, exaggerated weather and then the devastating news of Sudan - the last surviving male of the Northern White rhinos who died at the end of March. As we go into Autumn, let us take this change in season to change focus, stress less, look after ourselves and make the most of each day. In this issue, we pay tribute to Sudan and the heroes who watched over him, we also mention SA’s shining star - Trevor Noah, the do’s and dont’s of networking and banishing those winter blues which have already started to set in. Take Care.

Practice your ponder HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED STILLNESS? A PLACE WHERE YOUR HEART AND MIND ARE SYNCHRONISED AS ONE AND YOU ESCAPE TO A WORLD WHERE TRUE INNER PEACE IS FOUND. Meditation means “to ponder”. Meditation can be an outdoor or indoor hobby but it really depends on which kind of meditation you choose to do. It was founded by a Japanese Monk named Dosho. He brought meditation to Japan after discovering Zen (a Japanese school that taught people to spiritually connect through meditation and intuition instead of reading scriptures and performing rituals) while he was on his way to China in 653. SOME OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MEDITATE ARE HIGHLIGHTED BELOW:
Focused meditation
This is a mindful exercise where you out all your focus into one specific thing. It can be anything from just focusing on your breathing to just focusing on one word like “pen” or even just focusing on an object laying around you like a book. The whole idea around this exercise is to focus on that one specific thing and continually bring your attention back to the focal point when our minds start to wonder.

MEDITATING DOESN’T EVEN TAKE UP A LOT OF TIME AND ITS ONE OF THOSE HOBBIES THAT DON’T EVEN COST A CENT YET IT BENEFITS YOUR BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT. IF YOU HAVEN’T MEDITATED BEFORE THEN YOU SHOULD PROBABLY BROWSE THROUGH SOME YOUTUBE VIDEOS AND GET STARTED OR YOU CAN EVEN GO TO FITTING PLACES TO PRACTICE.
It is a type of meditation where you pay attention to everything happening around you however, you don’t respond or react to it. How meditation can change your life: Improves your physical wellbeing. Relieves stress through calming your mind and thoughts. Creates awareness. Self-awareness is instilled through meditation as you dive deep into your inner self and recognise your emotions. Healthier lifestyle. You enable yourself to feel greater compassion. Reduces anxiety and depression.
REMEMBER THAT MEDITATION INVOLVES DISCIPLINE AND IT’S SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO PRACTISE ALL THE TIME.

LET’S FACE IT, WE ALL LIVE VERY STRESSFUL LIVES. WHETHER WE ARE STUDENTS, BUSINESS MEN OR STAY AT HOME PARENTS, WE ALL HAVE PRESSURE AND HURDLES THAT WE NEED TO OVERCOME EACH DAY. IN A SOCIETY THAT IS FAST PACED AND SUCCESS-DRIVEN IT IS CONSIDERED A BADGE OF HONOUR TO BE ‘HECTICALLY BUSY’ ALL THE TIME AND WE OFTEN FORGET OR DON’T MAKE THE TIME TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS GOOD FOR OUR OWN WELLBEING. The concept of exercise being beneficial to one’s mental health may be a tricky one to grasp. Anyone can witness the physical changes exercise can make to the body, but how does it affect the mind and spirit? Let me explain this a little further: when you don’t feel completely right in your mind, in other words, you feel stressed, frustrated or depressed, your body is also put under strain. If you have ever experienced an upset stomach due to the fact that you are worried about an upcoming interview, important exam or performance assessment; or a tension headache while stuck in heavy traffic, then you will understand the power that the mind has over the body. But if this is the case then obviously the opposite is also true: by doing something that is good for your body, and therefore putting your body in a better place, you can affect your mind in a positive way. Exercise releases endorphins, which are neurotransmitters produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. They work as natural pain killers, for both emotional and physical pain. Along with reducing the negative feelings associated with stress, they increase a sense of joy and accomplishment.
I’m not talking about shopping sprees or over indulgent meals (things that are often used as coping mechanisms for stress) - I’m talking about running, dancing, boxing, riding, stepping, lifting and sweating your stress away. What you are about to read is everything you need to know about the relationship between stress and exercise, as well as a hands-on guide that will help you change the way you feel, and the way you see yourself. It has been scientifically proven that aerobic exercise (running, walking, dancing etc.) decreases tension, elevates your mood, gives you energy for life, and improves your self-esteem. Eating a hot curry, falling in love or bungee jumping may in fact cause the exact same chemical reaction in the brain but the side effects of exercise are so much better: Weight loss A lower risk of heart disease A lower risk of diabetes and osteoarthritis It is clinically proven to decrease anxiety It lowers the risk of depression and dementia.

It is common knowledge that not all of us have acres of time to dedicate to exercise, but there is good news! Getting off the couch for the time it takes to watch your favourite sit-com three times a week will get you on the right path to success. You also don’t need to be in a gym for it to count as exercise. You can simply walk around the block, ride a bike, or take up something socially stimulating such as joining a dance class or taking kick-boxing lessons. The possibilities are endless and so are the benefits. Not only will your waistline shrink, but your strength and stamina will improve, your energy levels will increase, your moods will stabilize, your sense of worth will improve and you will begin to believe that you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

MORE EXERCISE LESS STRESS
THE TREND OF EXERCISING TO RELIEVE STRESS IS CATCHING ON, AS 8 OUT OF 10 OF MY CLIENTS AT THE GYM COME TO ME WITH A TOP PRIORITY OF “USING EXERCISE TO RELIEVE THE STRESS OF THE DAY.”
Very few of my clients came to me with their main concern being weight-loss. Going down a jeans-size is seen as an added benefit to devoting time to a physical activity. There are lots of exercise plans available online or in magazines or books that are suitable to do by yourself at home but, as I mentioned earlier on, even walking, jogging or riding a bike will lead to amazing results, both inside and out. Establishing a dedicated time, even writing it into your diary or setting a reminder on your phone will soon make it a routine that will be the highlight of your day. Start with doing some basic aerobic exercises 3 times a week for only 20 minutes, and watch how everything else will just fall into place. It may just be that exercise is the prevention as well as the cure to many of life’s problems. PROFUSION MAGAZINE

WHITE RHINO DIES Ceratotherium simum THE NORTHERN WHITE RHINO IS A SUBSPECIES OF WHITE RHINO, WHICH USED TO RANGE OVER PARTS OF UGANDA, CHAD, SUDAN, THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, AND THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO. YEARS OF WIDESPREAD POACHING AND CIVIL WAR IN THEIR HOME RANGE HAVE DEVASTATED NORTHERN WHITE RHINO POPULATIONS, AND THEY ARE NOW CONSIDERED TO BE EXTINCT IN THE WILD. ONLY TWO REMAIN, BOTH ON OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY.
The Story of the Northern Whites:
On December 20th, 2009, four of the world’s last remaining seven northern white rhinos arrived at Ol Pejeta. Najin, Fatu, Sudan and Suni had been living in Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic. All previous breeding attempts in the Zoo had been futile, and the hope was that the climate and rich grasslands of Ol Pejeta, a native habitat for the animals, would provide them with more favourable breeding conditions.

Safeguarding 24/7
To keep the northern white rhinos safe and in good health, Ol Pejeta dedicated 24hr armed security, a 700-acre enclosure, and a nutritious diet supplemented with fresh vegetables. Expectations were raised when Suni was seen mating with Najin in 2012, but as the gestation period of 16 months wore on, it was clear that Najin was not pregnant. With so few northern whites remaining, it was decided that a southern white male would be introduced to Fatu and Najin in the hope of producing offspring that would at least preserve some of the northern white genes. Again, this proved unsuccessful. In October 2014, we were devastated with the loss of Suni, who died of natural causes in his enclosure. His death left Sudan as the only northern white male in the world capable of breeding. In early 2015, checks by vets confirmed that neither of the females is capable of natural reproduction, and Sudan’s sperm count was disappointingly low (but not surprising given his age). In July 2015, Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic lost Nabire, and in November 2015, San Diego Zoo lost Nola - leaving just three northern white rhino left on the planet.

On the 19th of March, 2018, Sudan died. He had been suffering from age-related health issues and from a series of infections. Once his condition worsened significantly and he was unable to stand up and evidently, suffered a great deal, the decision to euthanise him was made by his veterinary team. The vet checks did conclude one last ray of hope – that artificially assisted reproduction was a possibility. The future of this subspecies now lies in the development of in vitro fertilisation techniques and stem cell technology, costly and complicated procedures that have never before been attempted in rhinos. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is together with Dvr Králové Zoo trying to raise USD 9 million towards this with a GoFundMe campaign called ‘Make a Rhino’.

The TEARS Foundation focuses of assisting and helping those who have been sexually assaulted. However, they also reach out to everyone when it comes to creating awareness and provide the necessary information for victims. The founder of the organisation is Mara Glennie who was a victim of abuse herself. Mara tells a tory of how she was a victim of violence and when she tried to report the matter to the local police station, she was told to come back three days later between 8am and 4pm. This left thought left Mara feeling helpless and desperate and till today that feeling has never left her. Rape falls under the broad spectrum of sexual assault in South Africa which involves sexual abuse whereby one person enforces sexual intercourse/sexual behaviour on the other person without getting any approval from as well as abusing someone under the age of 16.

It was not until after David Livingston explored Malawi, taking his vivid account of the slave-trade situation in the country back home, that Britain intervened and ended the slave trade in its protectorates and colonies in 1859. The end of slave trade, brought an end to Yawo’s lucrative trading enterprise. Today, southern Malawi, northern Mozambique and southern Tanzania are home to 3 million Yawo. The end of slave trade in Malawi, now a largely agricultural country, has left very little sympathy in its wake for the Yawo people. They are now faced with many challenges due to the impact of decades of underdevelopment, corruption and a severe HIV-Aids problem. Geographically, the Yawo live in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. The Yawo scattered over these three countries, are mostly unified in language and culture, with only the name that divides them. They speak Ciyawo, a derivative of the Bantu language and Cichewa, Malawi’s nationalized trade language. Malawi’s Yawo live mainly south and southeast of Lake Malawi (Lake Nyassa), in the villages of; Mangochi, Zomba, Chiradzulu, Blantyre, as well as the Mulanje districts. Here the people heavily depend on a good crop yield, and fishing to sustain their families. Due to the frequent occurrence of severe drought during the dry seasons, Yawo have become accustomed to hardship.
During the 1800’s many Yawo migrated to Tanzania and Malawi due to either large famines or internal tribal divisions. As a result of this geographical relocation, the Yao people adapted the trading culture of their Swahili-Arab neighbours from Africa’s east coast and began trading ivory, slaves, guns and cloths alongside them. As this relationship grew, Islam was introduced to the Yawo people and was quickly accepted, merged together with their own animistic and traditional religious practices, as their official religion.
The Yawo are a matrilineal and largely matrilocal society- meaning family leadership roles are passed down through the mother’s family and upon marriage, a husband moves to his wife’s village where they will live in a communal setup. Polygamy is common- it is a famous Yawo custom for one man to have up to seven wives.
In the 1800’s slave trade proved to be lucrative for the Yawo which led them to obtain great wealth and prominence, they soon became one of the richest and most powerful tribes in south eastern Africa.

CONTINUED FROM In terms of education, it is not accessible to everyone. The students in some villages have to walk 32-40km a day to reach school, some live on the other side of a river, finding it impossible to cross over and others do not attend at all due to the lack of resources, like a school uniform. Many have resorted to attending school underneath a tree, depending on elderly people to teach them basic life lessons through stories. This type of education is extremely poor when compared to modern teaching methods- resulting in the average overall literacy rate of 10-35%. The Yawo find themselves in a worst predicament when it comes to the healthcare system with very few accessible health care centres nearby the villages, and almost no medication available in the facilities that do operate. For the poor, healthcare is completely inaccessible due to the long travelling distances required to access them. Providing assistance to underdeveloped countries, can prove to be a difficult process as beyond their most immediate needs, there are other more pressing needs which take time and effort to provide. One of these needs are educational resources and leadership training. Many do not have the time to travel to rural African villages to provide the necessary training to equip these people.

South Africa possesses a pool of highly educated professionals with a bank of knowledge and resources that could fuel several economies, yet so often we place all our efforts on sustaining ourselves and our immediate relatives. So much more is possible, and all that it would require, is the collaboration of thoughts, ideas and knowledge to initiate projects that would empower and equip people like the Yawo. Given the fact that the country is very underdeveloped with a poor economy, they do not have access to the technologies of more advanced societies, such as television, smartphones, and other devicesalthough one source they do have is radio.

THE YAWO - SOUTHERN EASTERN AFRICA
The Yawo people are avid radio listeners and most receive all their information through this device. Almost every family owns one, or travels far distances to visit a friend or family member that owns one just so that they can listen to daily programs. This is surely a promising way in which the Yawo people of Malawi can be equipped. Currently, there is a radio station in Malawi that does exactly that. ‘Way of Life’ Radio owned by FEBA Radio South Africa and headed by Director Rev. Amos Siyabu Phiri, produces programs that provides instructions and practical guidance for daily living.

AN ESSENTIAL JOBSEEKERS SKILL by Natalie Singer, Talent3Sixty
ACCORDING TO LOU ADLER, AUTHOR OF “THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO HIRING AND GETTING FIRED”, ALL INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE ACTIVELY SEEKING ALTERNATIVE EMPLOYMENT SHOULD BE INVESTING TIME IN NETWORKING. He believes that only 20% of your time should be used in actively applying for jobs and at least 60% should be on building your connections and proactively networking. In his experience, leveraging connections in your network will result in a 5 – 10 times greater chance of being invited for an interview and ultimately securing a new job.

EVERY ISSUE
NETWORKING SHOULD NOT BE ABOUT TRYING TO BUILD A LARGE NETWORK OF PEOPLE THROUGH APPROACHING PEOPLE YOU DON’T KNOW. RATHER IT SHOULD BE ABOUT LEVERAGING THE PEOPLE YOU ALREADY KNOW, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO CAN VOUCH FOR YOU AND WHO KNOW YOU AND YOUR POTENTIAL. Referrals through a network not only help to bypass the gatekeeper and other usual application obstacles, but also provide you with a pre-introduction that should give a potential employer the confidence to take the time to meet with your personally.
Do’s and Don ’ts of Eff ective Networking for Employ ment
Let your network know that you’re in the market. Explain what you do and what you’d ideally like to do
Beg or plead. Be confident in your abilities and the value you could add. Simply send them your CV. Establish a relationship and, only if requested, provide them with your CV or other work-related information
Keep your network informed, but don’t be a pest. Consider opportunities to keep yourself top of mind without irritating them – pay attention to what they’re up to and touch base, even if it’s to congratulate them on a milestone in their career/life
Forget to ask for recommendations, especially if you have a LinkedIn profile and your network connections would be willing to endorse you
Ensure that you have an up-to-date CV available and would be ready to act upon an introduction (i.e. attend an interview) with as little delay as possible. They’re doing you a favour so don’t make things difficult by not cooperating.
Turn down an opportunity, even if it isn’t exactly what you want. Many people secure their first full-time job on the basis of doing a temp/part-time job in an unrelated field. After all, it’s all about who you meet. Go on! Take the first step to talk to people you know and start your journey to effective networking and a better job!

words matter
by Natalie Singer, Talent3Sixty

PROFUSION MAGAZINE
THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE FOR EVERY KIND OF LANGUAGE BUT THE GENERAL RULE OF THUMB WOULD BE THAT THE WAY YOU CHAT WITH YOUR FRIENDS, PARTICULARLY OVER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS, IS NOT THE WAY YOU SHOULD COMMUNICATE AT WORK OR DURING A JOB INTERVIEW PROCESS.
How long have you been with past employers? Do not job-hop! Even though many employers have become more forgiving in this regard, changing employers every 12 to 24 months is still frowned upon. Before accepting a new position, make sure that you are willing to commit to that employer for the foreseeable future.
Why Words Matter
The age old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover” might be good advice but in reality we all make snap judgements about the people we meet. A first impression is created within 30 seconds and it takes up to seven more interactions before this impression can be altered. In business, it is no different. The language (words) we use says a lot about us. Whether it’s written or spoken, the way that we communicate gives others a clear message about who we are, what we value and often, where we’re heading. Think about the classic story of My Fair Lady, where a good Samaritan takes a young country bumpkin, Eliza Doolittle, and teaches her how to speak with a posh accent, dress smarter and handle herself according to upper class etiquette, turning her into a debutante that everyone wishes to have at their ball.
PROFUSION MAGAZINE
Spelling counts
We’re not all great at a spelling but with today’s technology, it’s easy enough to do a quick Spell Check before pushing send. Ensure that you carefully check that the words you’ve used are spelt correctly. And remember that it should be UK English not US English! Not only does it improve the first impression someone has of you – especially if you’re submitting a CV or corresponding via email, but it also indicates that you pay attention to detail.
Don’t “Text Speak”
Chatting with your friends over WhatsApp might make “u”, “r” and “da” acceptable in lieu of “you, “are” and ”the”, although this is debatable. However, in a business environment this is NEVER acceptable. All correspondence, whether formal business letters or even informal emails/notes between colleagues, should always use proper English with correct words and spelling.

Sentence structure and grammar are also important. Proper use of English will always give readers the impression that you are well read, knowledgeable and pay attention to how you convey a message. The advantage of written communication is that you can take a little time to construct your message and to read it back, ensuring that it clearly conveys what you wanted to say, and comes across as professional.
Address people professionally
We live in a modern time where we’ve moved away from calling people Sir and Madam but in business, it is always a good idea to err on the side of caution. Unless you’re formally introduced to someone (or if they’re self-introduced) by their first name only, rather address them as Mr or Mrs and their surname. CONTINUES TO

They will often ask you to rather address them by their first name, but at least this way you’ve been given the green light and won’t be offending someone by assuming this at the outset. This is particularly important when you’re a junior in a company and addressing someone more senior, either by age, experience or rank. Avoid using terms like “you”, “he” or “she” when speaking about someone else, whether they’re in the room or not. Rather say, “Joan offered to assist” or “Mr. Roberts said that he’d like to proof read before approving the document”.
Use the common language
For the most part, the business language in South Africa is English and it’s always best to use this at work. It may be tempting to have a “sidebar” conversation with a colleague in another language but this often appears rude or may make others wonder whether you’re speaking about them. Choose to communicate in the language that the majority of people involved in the conversation, especially if it’s a meeting, so that you can be sure you get your message across and get buy-in from those involved.
Improve your vocabulary
The best way to improve your vocabulary and increase your word options is to read. This is especially important if you’re working in an environment where you’re not using your mother tongue. Ensure that you’re reading something each day, whether it’s the newspaper, something non-fiction or even a novel. Stretch yourself – try to read at least one book each year that challenges your current thinking and language ability. Words or “semantics” as they’re officially referred, do matter. Take care with how you communicate to ensure that you’re always putting yourself at an advantage in the business environment.

HAVE YOU EVER STAYED UP UNTIL EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING TOSSING AND TURNING AND ASKING YOURSELF “WHY ON EARTH AM I STILL AWAKE?” OR COULD YOU BE DRAGGING YOURSELF TO WORK ON A MONDAY AND YOU CANNOT MAKE ANY SENSE OF WHY YOU’RE TIRED ALL THE TIME? Sleep is one of the most essential things for the human body. Every person should receive at least 8 hours of sleep a day. According to scientists 16.6% of the world’s population can’t sleep. However, it is normal to have difficulties sleeping from time to time but its not normal when you are lacking sleep on a regular basis. When your sleeping problems start affecting your daily life then you could be suffering from a sleeping disorder which is terrible for your health.

Why is sleep so important for your health? Improves memory and learning abilities Maintains mental and emotional health Strengthens your immune system because most people get sick when their body is derived from sleep Boosts your productivity Helps you to stay awake and stay safe. How do you know that that the amount of sleep you’re getting is not efficient enough?
Recommended practices to help with calming yourself and preparing your mind to sleep: Keep a journal near your bed, if you’ve got a to do list, idea or reminder that is keeping you up, jot it down and get back to bed. This way you you’ve put your mind and can attend to it in the morning. Avoid mobile devices, tv, computer and laptops at least an hour before bed, these ommit a blue light that keeps your mind active for longer. Treat yourself to a full body massage. This is a great way for your mind and body to time out and relax, sessions vary from place to place but there is one common theme, spa time is your ‘me’ time. Use it for some well-deserved relaxation and time out Gym in the evening. There are many things you can do to improve your chances of sleeping. You can try and sit and breathe for roughly two minutes and just breathe with no electronic devices in front of you or even just say a short prayer and read positive things that inspire you. Sometimes, even exercising helps. Its also a possibility that your pillows don’t accommodate for your comfort so getting that right would be the first step.

WE ALL KNOW IT IS AROUND THE CORNER AND JUST THE THOUGHT OF THE COLD MAKES US WANT TO GO INTO HIBERNATION. HERE ARE SOME QUICK AND EASY WAYS TO HELP YOU BANISH THOSE MOOD-DAMPENING WINTER BLUES. A lot of people tend to suffer from winter blues, and it’s easy to see why; icy winds, overcast skies, less daylight hours, ugly thermal underwear… but it’s not all bad. In fact, winter can be wonderful. Here are a few simple tips to make the most of this chilly season.
Stay healthy Winter is flu season, so get a flu shot and look after your health. When it’s cold, it’s a superhuman task to ignore steaming pies, tasty pizzas and croissants smothered with chocolate spread. There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself occasionally, but try not to overindulge. Eat lots of fruit, veggies and nutritious winter meals that warm you up, like soup and stew. It’s also important to exercise. Going to gym or playing outdoor sports is less appealing in winter, but the results are well worth it. Exercise increases serotonin, the ‘feel good’ chemicals, so it will boost your mood while preventing winter weight gain. Wouldn’t it be great if you ended up in better shape than you were before winter? CONTINUES TO

Indulge yourself occasionally, but don’t hibernate It’s tempting to huddle under a blanket in front of the TV for days on end, but don’t isolate yourself. Spend time with friends and family and look for indoor activities. It’s lovely to sit in a warm restaurant or coffee shop when it’s chilly, feeling snug while watching people outside turn blue. Cold days are also perfect for going to the movies and munching on popcorn. If it’s really cold, take a blanket with you . That said, moderate self-indulgence is one of the joys of winter. Don’t make a habit of wearing pyjamas all weekend and avoiding all human contact, but do take some ‘you’ days. Snuggle on the couch, watch movies, read a book, play with your pets, take a long nap… whatever you want! You could also make this a ‘cheat’ day and eat those tasty pies or pizzas, just go back to healthy eating the next day.
Make friends with winter Don’t overlook the positives of winter. No sweaty heat, the crisp air, chic winter fashion, the simple joy of hugging a hot water bottle, drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows, reading a good book in front of a roaring fire, less bugs around… Girls, you can take a break from shaving your legs and painting your toenails. There are lots of fun winter festivals from June until September like the Knysna Oyster Festival, the Dullstroom Winter Festival, the South African Book Fair or the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

If these reasons don’t make you feel good about winter, remember that South Africa’s winter is mild. There are millions of people who live in really cold countries. We don’t have to deal with heavy snowfalls, temperatures below freezing, sleet or icecovered walkways.
Brighten up! Wearing bright colours will make you feel more chipper, and you don’t have to break your budget. Some colourful scarves and gloves will do the trick. Make your home feel cosier with bright scatter cushions and fluffy blankets. You might want to paint a wall a nice, bright colour, or hang some new pictures. Listen to upbeat music and watch funny movies. Open all your curtains or blinds to let as much light into your house as possible. We get vitamin D from the sun, which also lifts one’s mood, so you’ll feel better letting the sunshine in or spending some time outside when it’s sunny.
Shop ahead Think about summer goods that don’t get sold as much in winter. For example, there are often winter specials on aircon during the slow winter months. There are also lots of beginning of season and end of season clothes sales at the mall you can take advantage of, just stick to classic items so you can wear them next season.

The Carlton centre started being built in 1967 and architects only managed to complete the full process in 1974. However, the centre was officially opened for the public in 1973. The Carlton Centre is situated right next to the 5-star Carlton hotel which was known to accommodate the rich and famous. The centre was bought by Lancet which is a state-owned freight company during the 1990’s. The upper floor consists of the houses whilst the lower floor is the popular shopping centre and also has the elevator that takes you to the “Top of Africa viewing deck”. However, the Carlton hotel that is situated next to the centre remains empty after the inner city Urban Decay took its toll on the hotel.

PROFUSION MAGAZINE
What happens when you grind your teeth?
You clench your jaw and exert tremendous pressure on your teeth, up to 20 times more than when chewing. Apparently it’s enough pressure to make you a human nutcracker. Severe bruxism wears down enamel, makes it easier for teeth to chip or crack, causes increased tooth sensitivity, makes gums swell or recede, breaks fillings and loosens teeth. The damage isn’t limited to your teeth. It can also cause terrible headaches, disturbed sleep, painful jaw and facial muscles, jaw joint problems, earache, abscesses and a clicking sound when you open and close your mouth. It can even change the shape of your face, making your jaw more square.
What are your options?
Unfortunately there is no cure and doctors aren’t sure what causes it. It could be the result of stress, a complication from another disease, a side-effect of medication, misaligned teeth, sleep apnea or a combination of these factors. While it’s not yet possible to make the problem disappear, there are ways to manage bruxism and lessen the damage. To rule out possible physical causes, start by getting your dentist to check if your teeth are misaligned and ask your doctor if any medication you’re on could be triggering it. If not, common treatments include addressing stress, mouth guards or Botox.
Managing stress negative emotions
and
other
Stress, anxiety and anger are just a few of the mental states that can trigger bruxism. It’s not possible to eliminate all sources of stress from our lives, but you can reduce it. Try taking a hot bath before you get into bed, listening to relaxing music, meditation, yoga, going for regular massages, reading before sleeping, exercising more and getting counselling or hypnosis. Reducing stress and negative will benefit your whole body and mind, so there’s no way to lose here.
PROFUSION MAGAZINE
Bite plates
These devices can be called bite guards, dental guards, mouth guards or night guards. There are different designs but typically they’re plastic devices that fit over either your upper or lower teeth, preventing your teeth from touching. You can get cheap generic ones from chemists, but they’re probably going to be really uncomfortable. It’s better to get one custom-made at the dentist as it’ll fit properly around your teeth. Unfortunately they’re not cheap and they take some getting used to. Like home exercise equipment, many bite guards are purchased with good intentions before being guiltily stashed away and ignored. Stick with it, it’ll feel odd for the first few nights but it gets better. If it’s really uncomfortable, don’t be shy to tell your dentist. If, for example, it feels too high or rough it can be ground down and smoothed. You paid for it, it must be usable.
Botox
If the bite plate doesn’t work for you, consider getting Botox in your jaw to partially paralyse the powerful masseter muscles. It’s a relatively new bruxism treatment and researchers are divided as to how well this actually works. It’s also difficult to tell if it’s stopping the bruxism if you’re a night-time grinder, but it should reduce it if not eliminate it. If the headaches and jaw pain disappear, you’ll know it’s helping. On the downside Botox is expensive and only lasts for a few months, and there are the nasty potential side effects of a droopy face and difficulty swallowing or chewing. Luckily it’s not permanent, but it will be unpleasant while it lasts. If you decide to try Botox, minimise your risks by making sure the person doing the injections is trained. Ask what their qualifications are, and go to a doctor or dentist rather than a beauty salon. CONTINUES TO

You should also try… Don’t encourage clenching by chewing gum or eating hard candy like peppermints If you’re a daytime clencher, try putting the tip of your tongue between your teeth. You’ll certainly notice if you’re clenching. Make a conscious effort to keep relaxing your jaw. If you’re a night-time clencher, massage your jaw muscles for a few minutes before going to sleep. Breathe deeply and relax your muscles one by one. Visualise your jaw muscles relaxing. Avoid or reduce your intake of coffee, chocolate, nicotine and alcohol Take calcium, magnesium vitamin B supplements

TRAVELLING ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET BACK IN
TIME
FEATURE
on a shoe-string budget by Eva Pretorius
IMMERSING YOURSELF IN A WORLD AWAY FROM HOME HAS ALWAYS BEEN A TOP FAVOURITE, BUT NOWADAYS, BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COSTS INVOLVED IN TRAVEL, IT HAS BECOME MORE OF A LONG DISTANT DREAM THAN A LONG DISTANCE TRIP. THERE ARE MANY MORE THINGS INCLUDED IN THE PRICING BESIDES THE FLIGHT TICKET WHICH ALREADY PLACES MUCH STRAIN ON AN AVERAGE INCOME. There is accommodation to consider, meals, trips which all together can be so overwhelming that it causes you to stop dreaming. Despite the countless objections there are alternatives that open doors to a whole new world of opportunities. Travelling on a tight budget might seem like more of a disadvantage but may just as well be a chance to explore the world from a vantage point that very few can experience from the balconies of their 5- star suits. The first thing you need to determine before travelling on a tight budget is your destination, this will give you more or less an idea of what the costs will be like. Europe is always one of your more expensive destinations, with cities like Paris, London and Amsterdam that will send you running for your money. Eastern Europe is a hidden gem, which few have ventured to explore with places like Bulgaria, Romania or Montenegro which offer an array of wonders which are sure to astonish. Do extensive research before choosing your destination, this will allow you to be flexible and make a choice which best suits you.
APR | MAY 2018

Accommodation usually forms the bulk of the trip financially, hotels are increasingly expensive all over the world, not to mention that not many offer included meals to alleviate the cost. Consider staying in hostels which tend to include meals, and occasional trips. Another option which is also worth the while is finding host homes. There are people who rent out their holiday homes for vacationers over a period of time. This may very well be the best option considering that you have all the utilities at your disposal allowing you to cook meals which will extensively lower the cost of eating. This is a great prospect for young couples or friends looking for adventure, to find more information about this you can visit craiglist.org or workandtravel.com.
Food is one of the biggest money eaters yet. The consumption of meals and various other snacks and delicacies can become a means of wasting money, and restaurateurs across the globe are making millions off of peoples’ curious appetites for unexplored foreign cuisine. If you want to try something different there will be enough opportunity to snack on a Spanish churo for breakfast or a light evening Shuawarma ( middle eastern meat wrap), it is Important that you experience the different tastes that the country has to offer but don’t make it a 3 time daily affair. Make a habit of visiting your local food market or supermarket that usually sells the freshest ingredients for you to cook delicious homemade meals at a reduced price. There are several ways to alleviate the cost of travel, but it does come at the expense of sacrificing the absolute luxury hotel holiday perception that most have become accustomed to and requires one to think ‘outside-the-box’ and to creatively and wisely make decisions that cuts down on the price but still ensures a getaway to remember. In the extreme case you could buy yourself a backpack, pack lightly, buy yourself a cheap ticket to a random destination you’ve never visited before and venture the land on foot sleeping in hostels along the way, experiencing the world as it truly is and not from the balcony of a 5-star hotel, where the only view is the pool and possibly a few palm trees. It comes at the cost of comfort, and security that comes from knowing exactly where you are headed, but it’s the thrill of adventure that makes the experience all the more memorable, and all the more precious. The lessons learnt will be that of independence and a deeply rooted appreciation for the world we live in and the people that share it with us.
Another important aspect to consider is transportation. Most European, Asian and American countries have forms of public transportation which are very affordable, safe and clean. Eastern European countries make use of a taxi service, tram way lines and buses which make frequent stops at popular or even less familiar destinations. European infrastructure makes it easy to access museums, shops and city centres within walking distance and sometimes it is better to use your feet and well stored up energy to just walk to where you want to be instead of wasting money on taxi fair to nearby places.

FINANCES ARE A VERY PERSONAL AND A DEEPLY PRIVATE PART OF EACH PERSON’S LIFE, IT IS ALSO OFTEN AN UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATION TO HAVE WITH A STRANGER, BUT THE BEAUTY OF WORKING WITH A PROFESSIONAL IS THAT THEY WORK WITH NUMBERS EVERY SINGLE DAY! An Advisor sees many different clients daily and understands that each situation is unique. Your advisor should be the one person that you feel comfortable enough with to disclose as much as possible to. The value a good Financial Advisor will be adding to you, rests in your hands. For you to receive quality advice that is precisely tailored to your individual needs, objectives, wishes and pocket - you need to understand that disclosure is ultimately everything. Advice can only be offered on the information that you have provided - to understand what your shortfalls are you will need to work through a detailed Financial Needs Analysis. From there you will have a better understanding of which of your goals are realistic and which areas of your finances require more attention. When it comes to making sensitive business or personal finance decisions it might be a stressful confrontation-when facing these situations, you could experience a general feeling of confusion or be inundated with questions. A good Financial Advisor should help navigate you through your queries and options by providing you with enough information for you to essentially make an informed decisionwithout being biased as there is no emotional involvement or attachment to the outcome.

PROFUSION MAGAZINE
So how do you make this process easier for yourself- by knowing what the characteristics of a good Financial Advisor are and by knowing what the difference between financial advice and financial advice is? Having a Financial Advisor by your side during market fluctuations and trying times could be the difference between weathering the storm or ultimately bellyingup. They are Finance Gurus, specialists, with your best interests at heart- armed with in-depth knowledge, experience and a passion for their profession. They protect your wealth, potentially generate more wealth for you and ensure that your legacy, your family and you are taken care of. They are regulated by the Financial Services Board and are accountable for any advice that they give you. They are also governed by The Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Ombudsman. A measure of a good Financial Advisor is whether or not their clients invite them to Birthdays, weddings or to the family braai. This may seem to be a very strange concept but in actual fact, Financial advisors are more than just employees- they are a friend, counsellor and a life-line in difficult times. When chaos strikes they should be your haven, they should also be the first person you call.
As you progress through life you undergo changes; a new hairstyle, a new job or a new home- much like you, your finances should also be shifting and changing according to your developing needs. Your Financial Advisor should be on call when your circumstances change to always ensure that your previous plans and goals still align or can be amended to achieve your dreams or protect you against the unforeseen.
Advice should only be given if there is a comprehensive understanding of every aspect of the circumstances, needs and shortfalls and a relationship built on integrity and trust. A good financial advisor should help you strategize to achieve your dreams in becoming financially secure and effectively preparing for your financial future. In a world where everyone has an opinion on finances and everyone seems to be a specialist when it comes to your money, why not trust the advice of an industry specialist- someone with integrity, morals and someone that always acts in their clients’ best interest?
Are you partnered with the best suited industry specialist who will always ensure that you receive quality advice, honest service and sensitivity towards your privacy? To narrow down from thousands of possible candidates, waiting for you to hand them the metaphorical rose- it can be a daunting and time-consuming task to filter through them to select “the one. PROFUSION MAGAZINE
Instead of having a good Financial advisor why not have an extraordinary Financial Advisor? Get the right advice instead of any advice - that is the difference between advice and financial advice.
