The way you think determines the way you feel. In this issue we cover some of young local athletes as they ready themselves to compete overseas. We also share a recent interview with Nascar driver Amber Balcaen. As athletes need specific nutrition and exercise to perform at their best, we also must also look after ourselves and ensure that we do what is best for us and unlock the potential inside of us. We often confuse our identity with our habits and let our habits rob us of the potential that we have inside of us and the important roles we can play not only in our lives but in others as well. By changing our habits and reinforcing positive habits, we not only allow ourselves to change, but we also start realising just how much those initial habits hinder us from leading our best lives and what we have missed out on by not confronting them sooner. It is here that we often that we start seeing who we are. I often think of a lamp covered in dust and how it just sits there not being used. But when we start dusting off and polishing the lamp we start to realise that not only does it look good but that it is indeed in perfect working order. Better still the lamp is capable of shining light and light brings hope and clarity as we can see in front of us and shine a light for others to see, helping them to navigate through their darkness. Each day brings with it an opportunity to change and to reinforce those good habits that help define you and take you closer to the person you want to be. This edition is packed with positive reinforcement. I challenge each of you to do what you do best and get into the habit of working towards your goals.

KZN IS BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH THE CYCLING CHALLENGE WHAT IS THIS EVENT ABOUT? You probably think that the biggest cycle race in the world is the Tour de France however if you fall between the ages of five and eighteen it’s not. It’s actually the European Junior Cycling tour in Assen and according to the chairman of the Westville cycling club and organizer of the tour, it’s as serious as kids cycling could ever get.

RIDING FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS Every year kids from around the world get together on the Dutch town to race and get that crown after 6 days of cycling. This year there were over 500 cyclists who were entered in the first four minutes after entries opened and there are approximately 700 riders registered from 19 different countries. His goals are to get a podium place at SA Road Champs and get into top 20 in the coming Youth Tour in Amsterdam this July moreover, his ambition is to become a professional cyclist and to go race overseas.

It will be his 1st year in Junior age cat and set his goal for top 10, next year. Travis aspires to compete on the international racing scene in the Tour De France and the Duro d Italia one day.

Cloe Bateson aged 15: Her goals are to cycle in the SA ROAD and TT CHAMP 2019 and traveling and racing overseas. Her future ambitions include representing her country at Worlds, Olympics and common wealth games COURTNEY MUNRO AGED 17: Her goal is to represent SA in cycling, not only in road but in mtb as well. Her ambitions for the future are to open up her own bike park. To accommodate mtb as well as road cyclists. CHANTE OLIVIER: She loves to rider her bike and to compete. She would love to represent her country internationally and maybe win an Olympic medal. Her big dream is to become a professional cyclist and just to enjoy this Wonderfull sport.

He wants to continue enjoying road and mountain biking before getting serious but would really like to compete this year in the European Junior Championships in Assen and finish in the top 20, that would be amazing. He is also eyeing the top step in SA cycling in road and MTB disciplines. JOHANDRE MARX AGED 17: I would like to cycle the Amashova in a sub 3hr. I would like to receive my KZN Road colours. To be number 1. My aim in life is to make a difference whether it is in cycling or in my career one day. I want to always be proud of what I have done. APHIWE MSIMANG: In 2015 he started racing which proved he still had to work a little bit harder. He came third in race that was held at the Hibcuss Coast. He also went to Badplaas Youth Festival where they were the champions. In 2016 he went Ireland to compete on a Errigal Youth Tour. This year he is busy prepraring to race in Amsterdam. THE TEAM LEAVE ON THE 27TH JULY FOR THE TOUR WHICH STARTS ON 30TH OF JULY. IT CONSISTS OF 6 DAYS OF RACING, COVERING ALL ASPECTS OF ROAD CYCLING. THREATS AND OPPORTUNITIES FROM TRADE IN WILD PLANTS

The value of medicinal and aromatic plant trade has increased three-fold in the past 20 years, but traditional harvesting practices are being replaced by less sustainable alternatives. A new report by IUCN partner organization, TRAFFIC, highlights the importance of the wild plant ingredients used in the everyday products that humans depend on for survival. Wild at Home: An overview of the harvest and trade in wild plant ingredients, demonstrates how sustainable wild plant harvesting can contribute to wider wildlife conservation goals and why the global industry must adapt. The launch of the report coincides with FairWild Week 2018 - an annual online initiative supported by IUCN, celebrating the power of wild plants in our daily lives. The use of wild plants is common in many household products, including herbal remedies, food, and drink, cosmetics, health supplements, and even furniture. A recent analysis by the IUCN Medicinal Plant Specialist Group found that only 7% of medicinal and aromatic plant species with well-documented uses have been assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™— one in five was found to be threatened with extinction. Overharvest and resource mismanagement are two major contributors to species declines.

If managed well, sustainable wild-harvesting and trade in plant ingredients could provide holistic management for other species and ecosystems, as well as multiple benefits to wildharvesters and supply chains overall.

“Millions of people rely on wild plant collection both for their healthcare and for their livelihoods—from rural rosehip harvesters in Serbia to baobab fruit collectors in Zimbabwe, and the wide benefits of this harvesting are reaped by consumers across the world,” said Anastasiya Timoshyna, Co-Chair of the IUCN Medicinal Plant Specialist Group and coauthor of the report. “But the industry utilising wild plant ingredients and consumers are paying far too little attention to ensuring plants are being traded responsibly.” Of the roughly 30,000 plant species with documented medicinal or aromatic uses, approximately 3,000 are found in international trade. An estimated 60–90% of them are harvested from the wild. International trade in medicinal and aromatic plants has tripled in value between 1999-2015 and is now worth over US$3 billion. Growing and changing demand for wild plant ingredients often means that traditional sustainable harvesting practices are being replaced by more intensive and destructive alternatives. Examples of this include the use of heavy machinery in the harvesting of wild licorice root Glycyrrhiza spp., or the destructive collection of American Ginseng Panax quinquefolius.

Outcomes of the report are being discussed throughout FairWild Week. The action can be followed via the FairWild Website or on Twitter via @FairWild, #FairWildWeek. FairWild Foundation is working with partners worldwide to improve the conservation, management and sustainable use of wild plants in trade, as well as the livelihoods of rural harvesters involved in wild collection. TRAFFIC has supported the development of the FairWild Standard, and now hosts the organisation’s Secretariat. The FairWild Standard is being adopted across industry supply chains. Suppliers following the FairWild Standard adhere to strict rules regarding the sustainability of harvesting operations and ensuring the harvesters work in safe conditions and receive a fair and equitable payment for their produce. Products meeting the requirements are FairWild certified, and products containing them can bear the FairWild logo.

IT IS SAID THAT IN LIFE YOU HAVE TWO HANDS, ONE TO HELP YOURSELF, THE SECOND TO HELP OTHERS. RHEMA IS A CHURCH IN RANDBURG THAT HAS MADE HUGE DIFFERENCES IN PEOPLES LIVES THROUGH THEIR SOCIAL COMMUNITY WORK. THE NAME OF THIS PLATFORM IS CALLED HOC (HANDS OF COMPASSION). HOC IS A REGISTERED NON-PROFIT AND PUBLIC BENEFIT ORGANIZATION LEAD BY TWO PASTORS, ALAN AND XANA MCCAULEY. THE CAMPAIGN STARTED IN 1987 WITH THEIR MAIN VISION BEING RECOVERY, RESTORATION AND RECONCILIATION AND THEIR MOTIVATION TO CARRY OUT GODS WORD. The organization is built on a 19 hectre of land near Lanseria airport in Johannesburg and there are about 120 people from various backgrounds that live and work towards achieving their vision. These people share daily meals and work together to carry out their mission.

EVERY ISSUE Pastor Alan and Pastor Xana once said “What makes Hands of Compassion today was birthed years ago from a desire we had to do something about the poverty, injustice and need we saw around us. We may not be able to change the whole world, but we can make a difference in OUR world – in the community in which we live. We hope to inspire and challenge you to do God’s will.”

The organization is funded through donations from the members of Rhema. HOC carries out many programmes that help with social economic issues. The projects are: Woman and Children – helps children in need of care and they currently have 36 children. Health care clinic – there is a clinic at least 25km away from the nearest government hospital and offers Counselling, health care for TB, HIV, STI’s and man more illnesses and diseases. Empowerment and Training – HOC offers a programme for pupils that have a minimal education level at grade 10 to be part of their chef and catering course. The neighbourhood – this is a multipurpose centre offering classrooms, soccer fields, gym, offices and youth training. Soak the apricots in a cup of water and leave it overnight.

Wash the beef and pat it dry. Get a bowel and make a paste from the salt, pepper, garlic, chillies and cumin powder.

Make deep cuts in the beef and cover it with the paste.

Fry the beef in the oil over medium heat and gently turn and lift it to brown evenly.

Puree the apricots and add it to the beef.

Add the lemon rind over the beef and close the pot tightly. Simmer for about two hours until the meant is done.

Remove the beef from the pot and keep it on a warm platter.

Put the onions and potatoes in the pot and let it cook until done.

Arrange around the beef, spreading the gravy over the vegetables and meat.

Liezl was exposed to ministry while growing up in a Christian home by devoted parents, but it was not until she joined a Christian Youth Ministry in high school, that her own passion was ignited. She hopes to uplift, educate, inspire, equip and encourage people to embrace their skills, abilities and talents in order to become who they were created to be. Having gone through a transformational process herself and experiencing much fulfilment as a leader and ambassador in her field, she hopes to help others achieve the same fulfilment in their own lives. Her journey, however, was not always easy and presented its share of obstacles and uncertainty. When being faced with having to choose a career path, she initially wanted to become a nurse. On the day of her registration at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, she had an instant change of heart, and decided to register for her second option which was, a degree in Media Studies and Journalism. Since she was already uncertain about her choice, it only added to her doubt when she encountered difficulty when searching for employment after graduation. It was not until she was offered a position as Media and Content Developer for FEBA Radio in 2015, that she understood the purpose of her career choice. Motivated by her passion for Christian missions, she seeks to ceaselessly learn new skills, acquire knowledge and pursue selfimprovement, not only to be an asset within her workplace, but also to be a better person, a better friend and a better wife.

Subsequent to her parents’ divorce, her mother remarried, causing them to relocate to a farm, just outside of Postmasburg. Growing up on the farm she recalls fond memories of her time there and embraces the lessons learnt along the way. Attributing much of her current success to the shaping of her character that took place on the farm and at the agricultural boarding school she attended. “I’ve learnt the importance of being loyal to yourself, and to those you love. Growing up on a farm, the Platteland will always be a part of who I am. The people helped form my character. I am a real ‘Plaaskind’”.

As a teacher for, ‘Fascinating Womanhood’, (originally a book, written by Helen Andelin in 1963, credited for starting a grassroots movement among woman, and now its content is being used to equip, inspire and teach woman how to embrace their womanhood and reach their full potential within their marriage), after having applied the principles and experiencing transformation in her marriage, she hopes to help and inspire other women to do the same. Her vision is to teach and equip women on how to improve themselves and their marriages in order to reduce the overall divorce rate in society. In her position as Operations Manager for FEBA Radio South Africa, a nonprofit Christian Missionary Organisation, which utilises media to spread the gospel and produce programs for community upliftment. She believes that FEBA/FEBC very effectively invests in community upliftment and educational programs that focuses on agriculture, water sanitation, pollution prevention and health care.

This is especially effective in rural, impoverished and underdeveloped communities. FEBC also trains ministers and provides pastoral and vocational training to impoverished people through radio in countries like, Thailand and the Philippines. In the Philippines, they broadcast programs which provide vital information, equipping people with skills to start small local businesses. She states that; “With our radio distribution project in Africa and abroad, we not only give people the means to hear the gospel, but also a tool through which they can receive vital information like news and education.” Driven by her love for Christ and desire to enrich the lives of those around her, she dedicates her life to serving others.

BCEA works both ways Individuals are usually aware of their rights when it comes to the labour legislation but few consider that the obligations imposed by the Basic Conditions of Employment (BCEA) works both ways. Minimum notice periods are provided for in the law, in the case of termination – whether instituted by the employer or the employee – and should be honoured. The BCEA states that for any employment period shorter than six (6) months, a minimum notice period of one (1) week is required to be given. For periods between six months and one (1) year, notice of two (2) weeks is required. Anything in excess of one (1) year requires four (4) weeks’ notice. Unbeknownst to many, longer periods of notice can be insisted on by employers as part of their employment contract and will be held up in court. This is because the law sees a longer period of notice as being advantageous to the employee, in the instance that the employer decides to terminate the employment agreement.

The BCEA does make provision for the notice to be given up in lieu of payment for the period. Sometimes, for example, an employer may allow an employee to leave immediately upon termination by the employer, paying them for the full notice period even though they do not physically attend work. The same applies to the employee, i.e. if the employee wishes to leave without serving their notice, they are entitled to pay the employer the value of the notice period.

Be true to your word It may be tempting to simply pack up your things and leave but remember that your reputation will be with you forever. Besides, the employer that you leave in the lurch will be a future employment reference and you’d hate to ruin what was probably a good experience with leaving them hanging. I would also argue that any new employer who expects you to ditch your existing employer without honouring your agreement is one to be wary of – does that imply that they would have no qualms about not meeting your contractual agreement?

RECENTLY MUCH WAS CREATED IN THE NEWS ABOUT VIRGIN’S (RICHARD BRANSON’S COMPANY) DECISION TO ABOLISH ALL POLICIES RELATED TO LEAVE AND TO ALLOW THEIR STAFF TO TAKE AS MUCH VACATION TIME AS THEY CHOOSE. FROM THE OUTSIDE THIS SEEMS A CRAZY DECISION – SURELY THE COMPANY WOULD STRUGGLE TO GET THEIR EMPLOYEES TO WORK AND LEAVE INDIVIDUALS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIMPLY TAKE MORE TIME OFF THAN THEY SPENT AT WORK? It certainly is pushing the boundaries of traditional HR practice as it seemingly provides employees with room to take advantage of the system. Virgin isn’t the first company to do this and in fact made the decision to change their policies after seeing the benefits achieved by companies such as Google and Netflix who all started allowing their employees freedom to make their own decisions about when and how they work. In each of these cases the companies that ditched the complex red tape associated with lots of policies and procedures saw an increase in productivity, creativity and commitment from their employees.

So what’s changed?

Underlying these new theories of work is the principle that employees are adults who take control of their own lives everywhere, except at work where under the old master-servant system they are treated like children. The “Master” (employer) sets lots of rules and regulations, often created to deal with the possibility of “someone” taking advantage, and then spends loads of time policing this – managing all employees harshly because of one or two rogue individuals.

Today’s forward thinking companies believe that adults should be treated as adults at work – given clear guidelines of what is expected in terms of job performance, a framework of acceptable/unacceptable behaviour and then allowed to simply get on with it. And, in instances where someone fails to meet expectations they deal with that individual only.

Results Only Environments

Work

Results Only Work Environments (ROWE) effectively means that instead of managing employees on time, i.e. the typical 8 – 5 work day, employees are evaluated on the basis of the results they have achieved rather than how many hours they have logged. The focus is on achieving mutually contracted, clear work goals such that employees take ownership of their work and responsibility for its outcome. Of course, this type of flexibility may not be practical in all circumstances (retail employees, for example, must be present in the store in order to do their job or a receptionist who is required to be at their desk from 8 to 5), those for whom it is possible may find that ROWE is perhaps the ultimate form of workplace flexibility.

CONTINUED FROM Individuals are provided the freedom to determine how best to integrate their work and personal obligations ensuring that they can “customise” their day as they need it. A parent may wish to leave earlier to pick up kids and supervise homework, a student may wish to work in study time or an individual may simply decide to have the freedom to surf when the tide is right.

ROWE requires that clear goals are set on the required output so that the employee understands what is expected, by when, and the employer can monitor accordingly. There are benefits for each party. For individuals (employees), ROWE allows for flexibility along multiple dimensions by permitting workers to choose when, where, and for how long they work, as long as they are sufficiently productive. For the organisation (employer) there are two primary benefits – increased productivity and reduced staff turnover. According to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a US non-profit organisation that researches the world of work, studies have shown that organisations that implement ROWE, there was a “35% increase in productivity over a six-nine-month period. And, in three divisions studied by CultureRx [the authors of ROWE], voluntary turnover had dropped between 52% and 90%. Of course, implementation of ROWE is not without its challenges. ROWE is a major cultural change and requires the individuals – both employers and employees – to change their core beliefs and behaviours associated with work. Everyone needs to think (and accept) that work isn’t about being at the desk for defined period of time. Trust is the most critical factor. Employers need to trust that their employees will respect the freedom, accept the responsibility and manage their time and productivity effectively. For employees, especially in the initial stages, clear guidelines and frameworks on what is, and isn’t, acceptable should be provided. This allows employees to better understand what is expected.

Most importantly, all employees should be provided with a clear performance contract that clearly stipulates what output is required – what work, by when, delivered to whom, in what format. Without this, ROWE cannot work. Each individual needs to understand what they have to do in order to contribute to the company’s overall goals and managers must be clear on when to step in and take action against anyone they believe is not meeting these expectations.

Peer monitoring makes it work

For the most part, peers (co-workers and colleagues) tend to drive performance and monitor those individuals within their team, in a ROWE situation. If someone is not pulling their weight or taking the mickey out of the system, they will usually put pressure on them to conform or to leave, ensuring that they do not lose out in future if the organisation chooses to ditch ROWE. Companies that provide the freedom to their workers, and who employ individuals who are responsible and manage their time professionally, ensuring achievement of the agreed results, generally get the opportunity to be more picky about who they employ. Who wouldn’t want to work somewhere where you’re given clear targets/goals and then given the autonomy to work the way that you want to work? Recruitment processes are adopted by these organisations to assess individuals they’re considering hiring to see that they have the personality, self-leadership, self-discipline, and responsibility necessary to excel in ROWE situation. And into the future, ROWE organisations only employ those who produce the goods in a truly free work environment.

ROWE in South Africa

There are not too many companies in South Africa that operate a true ROWE. Many are adopting flexibility, allowing individuals the freedom to choose their own hours – mostly to counteract the crazy traffic – but this doesn’t always work. Many individuals simply end up working longer hours as they come earlier and leave later to avoid the peak-hour rush. A shift still needs to happen in South Africa as companies (and employees) accept that work isn’t about where you’re sitting and for how long, but rather for the work (results) you produce. It requires a maturing of the management styles adopted in organisations, meaning that managers choose to measure performance and treat individuals as individuals, providing true flexibility and accountability.

PROFUSION TALKS TO THE AMAZING CANADIAN PROFESSIONAL NASCAR DRIVER AMBER BALCAEN WHEN DID YOU START YOUR CAREER AS RACE CAR DRIVER AND WHAT SET YOU ON THE PATH TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL RACER? I started racing at 10 years old in gokarts on oval dirt tracks. My dad, uncle, cousins, grandfather, pretty much everyone in my family raced! It just started out as a hobby, wanting to be like all the guys in my family but quickly turned into a passion. Now I am the first of my family to make racing a full blown career. And the first in my family to go from dirt racing to pavement in NASCAR. FROM THE TIME YOU STARTED YOUR PURSUIT IN BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL RACE CAR DRIVER WHEN DID YOU OFFICIALLY BECOME PRO AND WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT FROM THE MOMENT (DETAIL OF THE RACE ITSELF / DATE AND A PHOTO IF YOU HAVE ONE) I would say that my first year of 410 sprint cars is when I really started to make racing my career. I would say I turned pro once I switched to pavement on the NASCAR Whelen all American series, and started receiving pay checks. The 1st pavement race I won was in my first year on pavement, and with that win I became the 1st Canadian female to win a NASCAR sanctioned race in the USA.

CONTINUED FROM WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER THUS FAR ? Being the 1st Canadian female to win a NASCAR sanctioned race in the USA. But my next goal is to be the first female to win in a NACAR K&N series race, NASCAR Truck series, Xfinity series, and Cup series. AS A NASCAR DRIVER HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO OTHER FORMS OF RACING YOU HAVE DONE/ ENCOUNTERED GETTING TO YOUR CAREER AND WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL IN NASCAR? I grew up Dirt track racing my entire life, it was a much larger transition to pavement than I expected it to be. People don’t realize how different they really are but I feel that I was able to take a lot of my dirt track racing experience to good use when it came to hitting the pavement. I am glad that I was able to experience dirt track racing first. My ultimate goal in nascar is to make it to the NASCAR Cup series and break as many records as I can along the way. I want to win in every series I am in, and be a positive role model for young girls to look up to. WHAT HAVE THE CHALLENGES BEEN IN DRIVING NASCAR AND WHAT OBSTACLES WOULD A YOUNG DRIVER FACE?

The BIGGEST challenge of my career has ALWAYS been finances. Since I was in go karts I always had to raise my own money to be able to race.

Now it is harder than every because instead of asking for hundreds or thousands of dollars to be in a racecar, now I am needing millions. I don’t have any financial backing from my parents or anyone else. This means less practice time, less track time, less races, etc etc. So I have to make the most of EVERY opportunity I get on the track. I have so much less experience than my competitors solely due to lack of finances. The more money you have, the more time you get to be on the racetrack. Whether its racing or practicing, both costs a lot of money. Its unfortunate that this sport is so financially dependent. I wish it could be more of a talent-based sport. But this is my dream and I am willing to work hard for it. WHAT IS THE ACTUAL TANGIBLE COST OF PURSUING A CAREER IN THIS SPORT AND WHERE DOES MOST OF THE MONEY COME FROM? Money can either come from a driver’s parents, family, friends, or sponsors. Most of the time it’s a drivers parents who help at least at the beginning of their racing career. This was not the case with myself, therefore I have always have had to work extra hard when it comes to building a brand and making people be aware of my talent and potential. To compete any of the top 3 series of NASCAR (Truck, Xfinity, Cup) it costs millions of dollars. Even the NASCAR K&N series can cost upwards of $800,000 a season. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNGSTERS THAT WANT TO GET INTO NASCAR AND WHAT TYPE OF RACING SHOULD THEY GET INVOLVED WITH FROM A YOUNG AGE TO GET THEM PREPARED.

I personally think dirt track racing is a great place to start! Not only is it tons of fun, but it’s a little less expensive than pavement racing and gives you a lot of the fundamental skills a drivers needs. IN TERMS OF FITNESS WHAT WOULD BE A TYPICAL TRAINING BE LIKE, HOW MANY HOURS WOULD ONE NEED TO TRAIN AND WHAT SORT OF DIET SHOULD ONE FOLLOW. Some drivers take their training more seriously than others. Being in these cars at 90+ degrees farenheight for hours on end using mostly every muscle on your body does require a lot more athletic ability than people realize. I don’t know what exactly every drivers fitness plan looks like because everyone is different. But I personally work out 6 days a week for 2 hours a day. Everything from cardio, to weights, to hand-eye coordination, to reaction time. I do whatever I possibly can to have every advantage I can when it comes to being in a racecar. The more fit you are, the better athlete you can become. I also eat very healthy. High protein, low carb and lots of vegetables! IN NASCAR THE CONCENTRATION LEVELS WOULD HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY HIGH AS THE RACE GOES IS SO LONG IN LENGTH AND MILES THAT YOU DRIVE PER

RACE, HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOURSELF MENTALLY FOR A RACE AND TO GET INTO THAT ZONE ? For me one of the biggest adjustments from dirt to pavement was the length of the races. Being physically fit makes focusing on driving (hitting your marks consistently, quick thinking, etc) a lot easier because when your body is fatigue, it makes your brain fatigue as well. So a big aspect is making sure your physical strength and endurance is on point so that you can truly focus on everything else that’s going on around you. When you are fatigue it makes concentration SO much more difficult. Adrenaline has a huge part in helping you throned the race as well. Along with a great spotter who keeps you calm and focused. I also read quite a lot of books that pertain to athletes, mindset and concentration. Being “in the zone” I think just comes naturally.

WERE YOU INSPIRED BY PEOPLE SUCH JANET GUTHRIE AND WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO IN THE SPORT NOW AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACHIEVE IN THIS SPORT ? When I was younger it was always extremely inspiring to see other females in the sport. To this day, any female in motorsports that is killing it inspires me. But because of the adversity that I have had to overcome with lack of finances… I am also really inspired by the underdogs. The ones who haven’t came from money and have been able to have success. The ones that don’t get many opportunities but rise to the occasion when they do get that shot. I am always extremely inspired by the underdogs. I want to go down as the best female racer driver ever. I want to break records not only for being a female, but for being a Canadian as well. I race to win. I want to win as much as possible. THERE IS THIS BIT OF TRIVIA THAT RACE CAR DRIVERS WOULD NOT ALWAYS BE ABLE TO HOLD IT IN AND PEE WHILE THEY ARE RACING AND THROW WATER OVER THEMSELVES AFTER THE RACE TO HIDE IT. GIVEN THIS TRIVIA WHAT HAS BEEN THE STRANGEST AND FUNNIEST THING HAS HAPPENED TO AND THAT YOU HAD TO DO IN NASCAR?

HELPING OTHERS IS A MAJOR ASPECT OF WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE WHEN YOU ARE NOT RACING, HOW HAVE YOU A BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE THIS THUS FAR AND HOW HAS BEING A NASCAR RACER HELPED YOU ACHIEVE THIS GOAL?

hahaha. I’ve never had to pee in my race suit… I think us drivers get so dehydrated from sweating during the race that peeing your suit isn’t as common as people may thing. In saying that, I also haven’t had to race a 600 mile race before so who knows!!

Yes the main reason why I want to succeed in NASCAR so much is because it is such a huge platform that I can use to help people. I do a lot of charity work with children’s hospitals and speaking engagements, especially to kids and tell them my story with the intent to inspire and empower others to go after their dreams.

Sponsors fully control my entire career. Without sponsors, I don’t get to be on the race track. They are EVERYTHING. Though they just look like towers from afar they are actually geared for great family fun and activities. Not for the brave, some of their activities on offer are not for the faint of heart. From their hair raising 100m bungee jump to some colourful paintball fun and an amazing virtual tour.

Originally known for being the site of a coal fired power station, construction of the Orlando Power Station started in 1935 and was only completed in 1955, due to interruptions caused by World War 2. After 56 years of service in 1998, the power station was shut down and then took new life in 2008, where it was transformed into the well-known entertainment and business centre it is today. The site was opened by a local company called Skyriders who turned it into a vertical adventure facility and today it is one of the most distinctive tourist attractions in South Africa. The towers are thirty-three storeys high and are painted in extraordinary paintings.

Communication is the foundation of all human relationships. Communicating helps people to express their ideas and feelings, and it, at the same time, helps us to understand emotion and thoughts of the others. We want to help bridge the communication gap with our course. More and more hearing South Africans are learning sign language to improve their relationships with the approximately 1.5 million South Africans who are Deaf or hard of hearing. SASL is the only language in South Africa that is understood by all communities, regardless of whether the signers are from English, Afrikaans, Zulu or Tswana-speaking backgrounds. Some of the signs may be different, but the language structure is the same – and it is a lovely, expressive language. The Quality Council for General and Further Education and Training, Umalusi, released a report on the 2nd of March 2018, on its study on the inclusion of South African Sign Language (SASL) in the curriculum as one of the examinable subjects for the National Senior Certificate. “Deaf learners in South Africa no longer need to feel like foreigners in their own land, and at last they can exercise their rights to be taught and assessed in their own language. This may be a bigger step than many people realise, for in recognising SASL as a home language in our education system, the system is by implication recognising Deaf culture as a fundamental part of South African culture,” said the council in a statement. Chairperson of Umalusi Council, Prof John Volmink said: “Today we can say to deaf learners that the system has fully embraced them, that their language is valued and respected, and that they now have the opportunity to learn and study and be tested through the medium of their home language Those who suffer from being deaf and have impaired hearing should not be sheltered from communicating with the rest of their peers. ust because a portion of the population cannot hear or speak, does not mean that their form of communication should not advance along with the rest of the world.

Sign languages, however, are not universal - SASL (and other signed languages such as American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language) are not related to the spoken languages used in the community. In fact, American and French Sign Languages are closely related, whereas British Sign Language is pretty different from ASL. Learning SASL will expose you to a new cultural and linguistic community whilst at the same time helping you realise the significance of being able to communicate with and understand Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. The importance of sign language is gaining momentum, finally, and it is evident more people are seeing the need for it in today’s society. No one should be left in the dark, no matter what disabilities they may have. Also, it is an everlasting skill that can without a doubt make people better-rounded. Enrolling in our course will break down the stigmas. One of the ways the Deaf distinguish themselves as a culture is by capitalizing the word Deaf and working to change people’s attitude. The Deaf culture doesn’t believe in using the word “disabled” because that word makes implies “less than” – as though they are lacking something.

By removing the label, they are also removing any stigma that might be attached to be hearing impaired and or Deaf. It’s about perspective, when you are able to use sign language it gives you the opportunity to see the world in a different way. You communicate differently. The idea is that sign language will allow people to have more meaningful and intentional conversations as you use your hands and facial expressions to have a conversation. Imagine the customers experience an increase in customer satisfaction if your staff are able to communicate with all citizens of South Africa. It is Secudac undertaking that whatever courses we provide that is as inclusive as possible for all the people of our country, and bridging the gap and divide through learning.

LIKE MOST ROYALS, QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND CELEBRATES HER BIRTHDAY TWICE EVERY YEAR. THE TRADITION OF TWO BIRTHDAYS WAS FOUNDED BY GEORGE THE SECOND IN 1748. BORN IN NOVEMBER, IT WAS TOO COLD TO CELEBRATE, SO HE COMBINED HIS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION WITH AN ANNUAL SPRING MILITARY PARADE. Christened at Buckingham Palace in a private chapel as Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, Elizabeth the second was born on the 21st April 1925. She was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York who at a later stage became George VI and Queen Elizabeth. During her early life as a young princess she spent most of her time with her family. When the queens father died in 1952, she acceded to the throne at the age of 25. The Queen doesn’t always celebrate her birthday on the 9th of June. Its celebrated on the first Monday of June every year.

The Queen inspects the troops whilst riding past them in a carriage and when the bands finish their musical troop performance, the regimental colour or flag is carried down the ranks of the troop. This is so that soldiers are familiar with each other’s colours. Most official birthdays used to be celebrated on a Thursday but it has now changed to a Saturday so that the public can join in and enjoy it too.
