Around this underlying pulse, textures accumulate along with an air of mystery and anticipation. Exquisitely doubled melodic lines beautifully cut through the work’s rhythmic bed, while subtle vibraphone, piano and drum kit grooves gently propel the work along. Cloud Folk also provides platforms for exciting solo material to shine through for both pitched and unpitched percussion. Suitable for performers of approximately Grade VIII to Diploma-level ability, Waiting for the Aeroplane (1988/90) for solo piano is Psathas’ response to the emotional experience of contemporary air travel: long periods spent passing the time in a kind of awkward limbo, concluded by abrupt partings with loved ones.
