TO PEAR-FECTION BY CHERYL HAMMER
A formally clipped bay hedge and conifers reflect the garden owner’s penchant for Mediterranean plants.
A garden is a very personal space and none more than at “Findon House” where the grounds have evolved to cater for at least three family generations, a life long passion for dance and an ever growing love of gardening. Daphne
Turnbull
has
never
considered
being
surrounded by a deciduous pear orchard as a hindrance to her garden, but has instead embraced the backdrop and created magnificent European style grounds full of spectacular rooms and features. The outdoor spaces at the Turnbull’s property at Ardmona in the Goulburn Valley, have developed over the past 37 years to cater for a family of four children and now grandchildren, Daphne’s ballet students and a number of open days for charities and public functions. Orchardist, Ross Turnbull and his then young English born wife, moved onto the orchard in 1971 so Ross could be closer to his work. By Daphne’s own admission, the garden has not always been a passion or first priority but as her interest in the garden grew so too did the breathtaking spaces that now embrace the family home. Early on the decision was made to maintain a large lawn area with shady trees at the back of the home, which soon became the children’s main playground, where many a cricket and football match has been played.

“The front garden was quite small at that stage and easy to manage but gradually I developed an interest in roses and began introducing them into the garden with perennials, Daphne says. Today, the rambling garden over more than three hectares boasts thousands of roses in many different shades of red, orange, pink and white. “Ross says he doesn’t want to know how many there are as he is usually the one to prune them, Daphne laughs. The dainty soft mauve tones of ‘Blue Moon’- chosen because it is her father’s favorite - is matched with lavender and other softly colored perennials in the back garden, where low box hedging has been introduced to give some structure to the otherwise free flowing style of planting. A timber alcove seat built at the back of a large bird aviary is the perfect spot to enjoy a view to the bottom of the lawn where a channel provides a natural water feature and helps blend the garden with the surrounding pear trees.

“This is where my love of dance and my creativity in the garden come together,” Daphne says. Symmetrically placed cypress trees tower over this part of the property. A formally clipped bay hedge and conifers reflect the garden owner’s penchant for Mediterranean plants. “I introduced the cypress after a trip to the south of France and Italy. I recognised that the Mediterranean style plants could fit into my garden. “My interest in plants tend to come in waves but I like the European style. I think it best suits the fact we live in a deciduous pear orchard”. With that said Australian natives have not been ignored and a stand of gum trees line the front perimeter of the property and native shrubs such as wystringia and grevillia are thriving around a pond. A striking 10 year old Ginko tree, a Tulip tree and silver birches also feature. Outside the large east facing kitchen windows a sand pit has been dismantled to make way for a paved herb and vegetable garden providing peppers, artichokes, eggplant and silverbeet as well as sage, basil and parsley. Oak trees are a favorite and in the front garden a majestic specimen grown from an acorn takes pride of place. From here you are drawn through a set of large wrought iron gates to a space created specifically for ballet and dance performances. A path leading to a raised paved patio acts as an entrance to the oval ampitheatre. A pebble filled ‘river’ flows through the lawn and is another example of the amazing attention to detail. Daphne is a world renowned ballet teacher and has hosted a number of performances by her students here, as well as the annual Opera in the Orchard as part of the SheppARTon Festival.

The Turnbull’s gardener of 26 years, Rocky Costa, is always involved in the choice and structure of plants and working closely with Daphne, Rocky has recently built a stone thyme seat and laid patchwork paving at the entrance of a striking tiled water feature, summer house and ornate iron arbor, all built for a family wedding two years ago. It is hard to believe this lavish part of the property was under orchard 12 months prior. And according to the garden lovers it won’t end there. Daphne, Rocky and Rocky’s daughter Louise Costa, of Design by Nature, will all work on the next major addition to the garden. A swimming pool was put in 25 years ago and has been fenced in by climbing roses and drought tolerant plants, but plans are afoot to expand the yard from the pool to the north to add another large area of garden. “We are still working on finer details of the design but it will be different to the rest of the garden. “I just love being creative,” Daphne sighs. Dairymaid to Developer

Whilst researching the history of the quaint home, Homescape’s Rhonda Sutton uncovered the remarkable story of Anne Callaghan and her journey from dairymaid to property developer.

A home in central Echuca is the legacy of a pioneering woman who narrowly escaped death from a spear and, perhaps more dangerously, took on the famous Henry Hopwood and won. Old newspaper articles about the house, which was built in 1902, indicated it was owned by Miss Alice Callaghan, on a huge parcel of land in her name. This seemed unusual for the time. Further research has revealed the intriguing story of the Callaghan family and, in particular, Alice’s mother Anne. Anne migrated to Australia from Ireland in 1840, at the age of 18, with her older sister Jane. Anne married

The couples worked hard to make a life in the new colony. The two sisters and their husbands were droving cattle when Anne was attacked by aborigines. In the 1850s Anne, Jane and their husbands arrived in Echuca, in its first decade of European settlement. The men bought extensive property in central Echuca at its initial land sales.
18
www.homescapemag.com.au
Despite owning a pub, Hugh enjoyed drinking at other bars, including the Bridge Hotel, owned by Echuca’s founder and entrepreneur, Henry Hopwood. In 1858 Anne went to court to complain about her husband’s continual state of intoxication. She successfully convinced the court to prevent Henry Hopwood or anyone else from providing liquor to Hugh Callaghan for one year. The feisty Irishwoman obviously irritated exconvict Henry Hopwood, who was charged with using indecent and insulting language to Anne Callaghan in a public place. The last of Anne’s eight children, Alice, was born 3 months after Hugh’s death in 1862. His estate was worth 300 pounds. Anne continued running the Royal Hotel and overseeing Hugh’s carrying business. She had a team of horses and won first prize for a draught gelding at the 1863 show.
The next year, free to
purchase property in her own right, she began buying more land. Anne owned a large area of land opposite St Mary’s Church which she leased as livery stables and saleyard. Anne Callaghan became one of Echuca’s first land developers, building numerous rental properties,

The owners have enjoyed uncovering the original features of ‘Callaghan House’.

In 1881 the Riverine Herald described Anne as one of Echuca’s most important oldest settlers, but she wasn’t the only woman in the town’s early history to prove herself equal to the men. Mrs Hatfield and Mrs Simonds took over their late husbands’ hairdressing and chemist businesses.
Eliza Sutton actively
engaged in public debate about issues concerning the town. After George Sutton died in 1878 his wife Eliza continued to run their business very successfully, with Sutton’s bakery remaining in the family for many years and still operating in Echuca today.
Shhhhhhhh...
When Anne Callaghan passed away in 1899 her estate
PEOPLE
was valued at over 2600 pounds. She had multiplied the family’s assets considerably through hard work and a rather frugal existence, living with her children in a modest residence in High Street, near the site of the current CWA hall. Mrs Callaghan would have been a ‘notable pioneer’ had the term not been reserved for men only. Anne left most of her property to her two unmarried daughters, Alice and Rose. In 1902 Alice Callaghan continued in her mother’s footsteps, organizing the construction of a substantial home in Queen Anne style on some of the land her mother owned. It featured a turret and flagpole, cost 1400 pounds to build and remains a lasting legacy to the Callaghan women. A Riverine Herald article of the time described the home as an ‘ornament to the borough’, with the kitchen, pantry and cellar ‘replete with every convenience in the shape of shelves, hot water arrangements etc.’
SNOOZING
Alice rented this house to Dr Kelly for use as a residence and consulting rooms. It was the first property in Echuca to have a telephone, with a line running from the Post Office nearby. By the time Alice passed away in 1924 she had increased the value of the Callaghan estate to over 23,000 pounds.
In accordance with her mother’s
instructions, a considerable sum was given to charity, including St Vincent’s hospital, a Bendigo orphanage, St Mary’s and the Brigidine Convent in Echuca. The story of the Callaghan women and their connection to the home began to gradually disappear. For many years Dr Ahern used the house for a family residence and consulting rooms. Over the decades the ornate features of the house were slowly hidden by dropped ceilings, partitions and cupboards. The current owners, Gerardine and Paul Jarman, bought the building in 2004. The original, richly hued Minton hall tiles were clues of treasures to be discovered.
Bathroom before renovation
‘I believe this home was destined to be ours. My grandparents owned an old house and never moved. I loved the idea of that,’ explains Gerardine.
22

The couple’s first job was to uncover the original features of the once elegant residence. In the first days of renovation they were thrilled to uncover intricate plaster ceilings in the front rooms: intricate eucalyptus

leaf patterning indicated a new found appreciation of Australian flora following federation. Through research, early photos and detective work, Gerardine and Paul have faithfully returned the home to its former glory. ‘We’ve never built or renovated before so found the process very exciting. We’ve employed others to do much of the skilled work.’ A Bendigo tradesmen in his 70s spent over three months restoring the tuck pointed brick work and repairing the plaster work. The original rear verandah had been removed and was rebuilt.
At Snooze we have a comprehensive rage of bedroom furniture and expert staff that can help you find exactly what you need for a good night sleep. Isn’t it time to sleep well...
A striking feature of the home is its turret which once boasted a flagpole.
This may be reinstated in the
future. Entry to the home is via a large entrance hall, once used as access to the consulting rooms on the right, which are now blocked off for rented office space. To the left of the front door are the study and a magnificent octagonal bay window looking onto the cottage garden.
32 Benalla Road. Shepparton VIC 3630 Phone: 03 5821 7292
Paul and Gerardine are justifiably proud of the job they’ve done. ‘We love living in the middle of town. It’s fun talking to people passing by and we’ve plenty of space to grow with our children,’ says Gerardine. The backyard is huge and includes the original stables. It has a beautiful view of the adjacent church. Appropriately, the Jarmans have now chosen to name their home Callaghan House. Their sensitive renovation of this magnificent residence has brought to light the remarkable story of Anne Callaghan and her daughter– pioneers who helped shape the town of Echuca we love today. [hs]

The hall ceilings are lined with kauri pine. To the right of the hall are the children’s and master bedrooms. To the left is the living area and kitchen, with access to the laundry. With Paul’s background in hospitality, this home is set up for entertaining. The kitchen has easy access to the outdoor entertaining area outside and the adjacent living room. The pantry/utility area is conveniently located beside the kitchen, out of view. The renovation has been cleverly designed. There have been no major structural changes and the integrity of the building has been retained. The residence has a feeling of spaciousness due to ceilings which are over fourteen foot high. Often it’s difficult to include an ensuite in older homes but the amalgamation of hallway space and an adjacent room enabled the creation of a good sized master bedroom, with walkin-robe, shower and toilet.

DESIGN: IN OUT The eclectic style is most commonly used today, as it is the most personal of styles. A combination of furniture and accessories from many different periods or cultures creates a space that is truly yours. “People who travel collect accessories, cushions and furniture and this certainly gives their home a unique look,” Di adds. The Oriental or Japanese theme consisting simple lines and strong colours like black and red is also popular. Wall hangings, black vases with ornamentals like lilies, screened walls, rectangular plates and red lacquer ware are all relatively easy additions to create this interior. Sculptural plants, Asian inspired coffee tables and elaborate cushions are also used to help establish the atmosphere. “The oriental style is sometimes adopted by people
Interior Motives! Decorating your home can be an exciting time, but it can also be daunting if you are not clear on what you expect from the transformation. It is easy to be influenced by the latest trends and there are thousands of publications expounding the do’s and don’ts of interior design but the biggest consideration is that the “look” should reflect your own tastes and preferences. Your choices should create a space you and your family will be comfortable in. Homescape Magazine spoke with interior designer Di Roberts who is also the colour consultant for G.J. Gardner Homes. Di advises people often about choosing a style that bests suits their personality. “There are people who are definite on the style they will follow but many of my clients create an individual look made up of everything they like,” Di says. “There is no right or wrong but if you follow a few simple rules your interiors can look very appealing. Choose a theme and stick to it”

who have travelled extensively in Asia. Its clean line furniture mixes well with contemporary interiors popular in new homes.”
The Australian climate has influenced the shape of our houses with the wide verandah and decking becoming an integral part of a home. Whether in the bush or by the sea these outdoor areas are a must have extension of a home’s living spaces. “Open plan living creates the illusion of a larger home and the use of timber and polished concrete as flooring embraces the Australian lifestyle of indoor/outdoor living”, Di says. She suggests plantation shutters, louvre windows, french or bifold doors to open onto a deck or verandah to continue this theme. “The evolving Australian style draws its inspiration from many places. Its components are as diverse and as varied as the nationalities that make up our country and it is easy to make it your own.” So whatever theme you choose for your home, make sure it is a style you can live with. It should be easily adaptable to your changing needs and not become dated in the short term. And if you are not confident in making all these choices yourself seek advice from a professional. [hs]

“I believed that building this accommodation was more than putting a roof over some ones head within budget. It was investing in the future of doctors in the bush.” And Rural Health school manager, Georgia von Guttner, could not agree more. “We have gone from conscription to a waiting list here at the unipods as many medical students come to realise the advantages of living and training in a rural area. “Their home is literally across the road from the hospital where they are training so no issues with transport or parking and their costs are kept down further because they can eat at home as well. “The relaxed, efficient lifestyle for students is also translating to their academic results with rural students now outperforming their city counterparts,” Georgia says. Homescape spoke to one student from Melbourne who Each of the smart, contemporary style pods has 11

“When I was asked to come up with a design I put myself in the shoes of a 23 year old student from Melbourne who had to come to Shepparton for their medical training. “For a start many of these students would not want to be out of Melbourne and they would be away from family and their home so their living space had to make a positive first impression. I then had to offer them a lifestyle they did not expect in the country. “I think we have done that with these buildings. The use of color and texture through an eclectic combination of materials has given the exterior a wow factor. Inside, the spacious shared living areas encourage social interaction and a family atmosphere, while the bedrooms provide a personal space for privacy which is important,” Peter says.

F res h Veg gie & Bac on Pizz a with Hom ema de Cr ust Crust • 4 cups plain flour, plus 1⁄2 cup set aside • 1 pkt instant yeast • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt • 1 1⁄4 cups tepid water • 1 tablespoon olive oil • Corn flour for dusting the pizza tray
Toppings • 2 cups mozzarella or other reduced-fat cheese • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced • 250g bacon, diced • 2 cups sliced or chopped fresh vegetables, such as mushrooms, zucchini, broccoli, asparagus, or onions, or a combination • 4 teaspoons thinly sliced or finely chopped fresh herbs, such as basil or oregano, or a combination
Serves 8 (2 slices per serving)
Directions Mixing by hand, in a large bowl stir together the 4 cups of flour, yeast, sugar and salt using a large wooden spoon. With your hands, blend the dough into a ball. If the dough is sticky, add some of the remaining 1⁄2 cup flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, working it in for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and does not stick to the side of the bowl. Set the dough aside to rest for 15 minutes. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Push the dough away from you with the heels of your hands. Fold the dough back over onto itself. Continue to knead the dough for about 30 seconds, or until the dough is smooth and elastic, then work the dough into a ball. Lightly coat a large, clean bowl with 1 teaspoon of the olive oil. Put the dough in the bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and set aside in a warm place (about 30ºC) until the dough doubles in size, about 1 hour. Fold down the dough, patting it into a disk, and place it back in the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. The next day, remove the dough and cut into two equal portions. Shape each into a ball.
the dough another day, wrap it well in plastic wrap or put in an airtight plastic bag, and refrigerate for up to 1 week. For longer storage, freeze the dough, and then when you’re ready to use it, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator. To prepare the dough, put it on a large, lightly floured surface, such as a kitchen bench, and press each piece of the dough into a flat disk. Work one disk in your hands, rotating it around and around while pulling it out gently until it is 30cm in diameter. Repeat with the second disk. Preheat the oven to 240ºC. Dust the pizza trays with corn flour and place the dough on top. Brush each pizza with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Sprinkle with the cheese. Top, in order, with the tomato slices, bacon, vegetables, and herbs. Slide the pizzas into the oven. Bake the pizzas for 8 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and the crusts are golden brown. Let the pizzas rest for 3 minutes before cutting each into 8 slices. Serve 2 slices to each person.
If you plan to use the dough that day, leave it on the bench, covered with a clean kitchen towel, for 1 hour to let it relax so shaping is easier. If you plan to use HOMESCAPE Magazine
