It’s hard to put a finger on an exact event, but the lessons I learnt while doing athletics training with Debbie Flintoff-King and Russell Parsons were invaluable. Being named in the state team in 1993 lead to my selection into the 17 & Under Australian Talent Identification Squad and an invitation to take up a full-time netball scholarship with the Victorian Institute of Sport.
What do you consider are the highlights of your career so far? There have been a lot, but stand-outs would be winning the 1999 World Championships by one goal and achieving a gold medal at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games in double extra time.

In 2005 you put your honeymoon on hold to train for upcoming tests against South Africa and England. How do you balance your professional and private life? We still haven’t been on our honeymoon! It’s challenging balancing the time and commitment I put into my sport and professional life and my family/social life. I’ve learnt how to say ‘no’ when necessary…..and I keep a very up to date diary!! Luckily, as marketing assistant to Netball Victoria, I can take time off work for netball commitments. Australian Netball Champion & Vixens Captain Netball is the most popular women’s sport in Australia, with an estimated one million players nation-wide. It’s a fast, physical and exciting game. Described as “one of the world’s best netballers”, Sharelle McMahon was acting Captain of the Australian Netball team in the Commonwealth Games and is currently captain of Melbourne Vixens.
You started playing netball in Bamawm, near Echuca, when you were seven and later selected in the Victorian and Australian Under 21 teams. How difficult was it to develop your sporting skills whilst living in a small country town? I had a great childhood and sport was a huge part of our lives. I was always active – playing in the backyard, riding bikes or swimming in the channel! This was a really positive environment to grow up in and a great way to develop a range of sporting and life skills.
There are many talented country netballers for whom the costs to reach the elite level are prohibitive. What support is available for aspiring young netballers from the country? Netball Victoria has an extensive Talent Identification Program. Through its “Zone Academy” program talented young netballers access high quality coaching and training sessions with the best netballers in their age group in the area, without having to travel to Melbourne. For me, I remember lots of trips around the countryside and to Melbourne with family and school to participate in sport. This was often tough because of the financial and time pressures but without this support I wouldn’t have achieved what I have in netball.
What advice would you give to young athletes? Work hard towards your dreams and have fun!

What was your first break into becoming an elite netballer?
What impact do you think that the new Trans Tasman netball competition will have on the local and international netball scene? The ANZ Championships are fantastic for netball. Hopefully the competition will improve the professionalism of the sport and help it attract and sustain healthy relationships with sponsors and partners. It will provide great development opportunities for players both within Australia and New Zealand and internationally. We’ve already seen players from Jamaica, England, Fiji and other countries come in and benefit from the high quality standard of play.
How do you cope with the frequent travel across Australia and New Zealand? I’ve loved the opportunity for travel that my netball career has provided. During the season travel can sometimes be tough in terms of recovery and performance but we have strategies to overcome this.
Do you get home to Bamawm very often? Not as much as I would like but I love heading home to catch up with family and friends.
Many people are disappointed that netball competitions can now only be viewed on pay TV. How can netballers, as Liz Ellis came close to achieving, gain the media profile of footballers and cricketers? We are trying increase the profile of our players and get the message out that netball is a fast, physical, and exciting game. Liz Ellis is a great ambassador for the sport. The deal with Fox Sports was one factor in the sport of netball securing one of the biggest sponsorship deals seen in women’s sport in Australia, with ANZ. This partnership sees financial support being given at an elite and grass roots level.
What are your plans for the future? I am still really enjoying the challenges and fun times that netball gives me, so will hopefully stay involved as a player for a while yet – as long as my body holds up. I look forward to having a family but just need to find a time to fit it in!

Today he manages the family’s adjoining motel, Wyndhamere, and leaves the restaurant in the very capable hands of wife Connie, brother Cam, (who joined the business in 1986) and sister-in-law, Angela, who works with two chefs to continue the strong traditional family influences in the restaurant and function room.
A major face lift two years ago, including an al fresco area at the front of the venue, has given the restaurant a modern contemporary feel but the one constant is the a la carte dining experience.

Rocky, a self taught gardener, has built this enchanting space with his own bare hands. To make it truly his own it is filled with many sentimental ornaments, quirky and quaint gifts from treasured friends and hand crafted features that “just come to me when I am working in the garden”. A recent project , a low dry stone wall on the south side of the property, consumed more than 20 tonnes of rock, half of which Rocky cartered from the Longwood quarry a tonne at a time. It is capped with Castlemaine stone which was given to him by “a dear friend and kept for just the right purpose” he added. A set of ornate iron panels have been turned sideways and secured as gates which take you to the bottom of the garden - and a round, medieval looking structure doubles as a garden shed. Stone pots from the Cotswolds and a pair of iron cranes, transported all the way back from Byron Bay in the back seat of the family car, are discovered as you wander through the property. There is no rush here.

Each section of the garden, which is becoming increasingly drought tolerant, is dominated by circles – Rocky’s favoured shape. Affectionately known as “Lord of the Rings”, Rocky confesses to calling his patch “the round garden”. Whether it be a perfectly formed circle of the ground cover Creeping Boobialla (myoporum) around a centre piece, or a manicured piece of lawn fringing a large shade tree, Rocky’s penchant for the round creates a restful place. “The hard lines of geometric gardens all matching and everything in its place is not an inviting garden to me. I like things tidy but I allow them to ramble and change as they please. “I love soft edges, lots of plants for interest and I need space.” Chinese Elms are prevalent due to their hardiness and gorgeous autumn color along with the spectacular Manchurian Pear, Chinese Pistachio and Claret Ash. Thirsty trees such as Silver Birch will be replaced with tougher alternatives.
Natives that blend with the preferred European plantings have started to creep in, with an informal hedge of red Grevillea, Wystringia (native Rosemary) and Emu bush (Eremophila) which doesn’t require any water. Expanses of lawn have given way to garden beds full of bulbs, bushes of Oleander, Indian Hawthorn, May bush, Prunus and Salvia. Abelia makes an easy care hedge as an alternative to box hedge. The conifer, Leighton Green, has been clipped to create a walled space capturing the warmth of the sun – a special place to relax this time of year. The rose, Red Coat, is a favorite and a 10 year old espaliered Crab Apple is a feature from the bathroom window.

In the first stage of a massive re-development of Moama Bowling Club Sydney’s top designers were asked to create an up-market dining and entertainment venue that reflects the natural environment of the river. The result is arguably the most jaw-dropping piece of commercial architecture in northern Victoria.
Set against stone walls and lustrous timber paneling are sumptuous rugs and furnishings which have been individually designed to suit the space. Chandeliers sculpted from intertwining branches hover over the massive bar.
At one end of the building huge glass doors open to a handsome patio, with stone fireplaces set into walls that jag out from the exterior of the building. With its relaxed seating this elegant outdoor area is a pleasant place to enjoy the sunshine or take a breather from the dance floor.

It was very frustrating. “In the end, when you know there are no big surprises at the end of the job, that the price given is what it will cost and that is real peace of mind,” Hayden added. With the addition of Hayden and Lara’s seven month old baby boy the space is perfect for a growing family. The last project for Hayden now is to finish the landscaping in the backyard, but already he and Lara are planning their next project. “We are not afraid to build again. “That’s how I created the term ‘sanctuary colours’.” When working with clients, Michaela strives to create the perfect balance for the family or group by introducing a harmonious blend of their sanctuary colours. “These colours are chosen because of the effect they have on the client – to relax, to energise, to inspire – but most of all because that is what they are comfortable in.” Michaela shares her observations of how people react differently to colour.

Four Gnocchi Foodies with an appetite for natural and fresh ingredients, gourmet style meals, desserts and a range of quality condiments will be in heaven at Madisons Foodstore. The modern contemporary food store / café is the latest venture of Shepparton duo Phillip and Pauline Gadsby. It is a one stop gastronomic shop for families wanting to take home a freshly cooked meal, hungry workers at lunchtime and those organising a business function. Full catering for business and private events and a take home service of gourmet meals are two main features of the new food store which buzzes daily with customers who have discovered Pauline’s hand made desserts. The café is also stocked full of condiments like relish, olives, pesto, conserves, mustards and chocolates, coffee beans and cheeses.
• 600 grams fresh Ricotta • 2 x Eggs - small • ½ Cup Grated Parmesan • ½ Cup Plain Flour • Salt & Pepper to taste • Extra Parmesan (if required)
Directions
• Combine fresh ricotta, eggs, flour, parmesan, salt & pepper in a large bowl. • If needed add a little more flour to bind the dough together. • Then roll into small round dumplings, once finished cover and refrigerate (30 Mins). • Bring a large pot of salted water (1 tsp salt) to the boil, and then gently place each gnocchi in • Once they rise to the surface of the water, remove with a slotted spoon. • Plate gnocchi and top with freshly grated parmesan cheese and hot Napoli sauce.
Tomato & Basil Napoli Sauce
• 3 x 400gram tins of SPC crushed tomatoes • 3 x large onions • ½ handful of fresh basil • 4 x cloves of garlic (finely chopped) • ½ glass red wine (optional) • Olive oil - for frying • Salt & pepper to taste.
Directions
• In a heavy based pot, fry off onions and garlic in olive oil. (Note: do not brown the garlic as it will have a bitter taste) • Add the red wine (if desired) along with the tomato’s and basil. Cook for approximately 1 hour or until the sauce has reduced to a thick consistency.

• If you do not like the taste of basil, you can substitute it with fresh parsley. • When tomatos are in season (during the summer months) you may like to substitute your tinned tomato’s for fresh.
