When is a Hat not a Hat...
but a Fascinator
by Carmel Johnson
When the Strathbogie wattle bursts into glorious golden flower the thoughts of the Euroa residents turn to Spring and the promise of optimism. For Euroa woman Tessa Speller Spring means something quite different... with her thoughts squarely on the current female popular high fashion item - the FASCINATOR. Having spent twenty four years in Melbourne and twelve years in London the energetic Canadian milliner decided that Euroa presented the tree change she had been looking for. “The Strathbogies ranges are truly beautiful part of Victoria and an area that I find very inspirational for creating my fascinators” said Tessa.
“There are hundreds of different styles of fascinators and each one is made to my clients specific needs.
Tessa has been making fascinators for more than five

someone wearing a fascinator the same as hers” she added with a wry smile.
Besides completing her Spring orders ,Tessa who incidentally is also a trained nurse, is working with the “Women of Euroa “group who are organizing a unique fundraising event for the Amaroo and Euroaville Aged Care Facility. The Euroa Butter Factory will host the October 8th event which will showcase the “fabulous fascinators” created by Tessa from the donations of recycled hats, materials, lace and ribbons. Dinner, entertainment and a silent auction will all be part of the event and “It will be loads of fun and hopefully we can help financially support the aged” the bubbly nurse added. Following the event the “Women of Euroa” will feature in a fundraising 2009 calendar with the women all sporting their individual fascinators… something that the multitalented milliner Tessa Speller will ensure does happen.

You live a semi rural lifestyle now on the Mornington Peninsula. Are you a city or country boy at heart? I grew up in Frankston when it was described, believe it or not, as a sleepy seaside resort, and there was plenty of room on the outskirts. My Dad was from Warrnambool, so he instilled in me a love for Victoria, not just Melbourne.

I thought I’d never work on a bigger story than the death of Princess Diana in 1997, but then along came September 11th 2001, the Bali Bombings just over a year later and the Beaconsfield mine collapse in Tasmania in 2006. It just proves that in my line of work, always expect the unexpected.
Did you always want to be a television news presenter? No. I started out with a desire to become a respected sports reporter or commentator, but Channel Seven believed I had a future in news presenting, made contact with me and I agreed to give it a go. It was the best decision I ever made.

Jill and her husband Bernard have recently purchased the leases for the cafe and adjacent retail outlet at the SPC Ardmona Kids Town complex. Popular with tourists and families, the complex is located midway between Shepparton and Mooroopna on the Peter Ross –Edwards Causeway.
Jill and Bernard have many years of culinary and event experience in preparing and presenting good food and wine in the Goulburn Valley. They have conducted several successful restaurants including the iconic Mitchelton restaurant at Nagambie. They are currently at the Eastbank Centre located in the Greater City of Shepparton municipality building in Welsford Street. Jill and Bernard are well known at the Eastbank café a popular lunch and coffee meeting place adjacent to The Shepparton Art Gallery.

CONCRETE - Nothing beats the look of a beautifully built and individually designed concrete pool. Priced from $35,000, tiled pools are at the higher end of pool choices but the benefits are endless. There are no limits to size, shape or design as all concrete pools are custom built. Mediterranean Pools have built over 1500 pools locally and no two are the same. If you have an odd shaped backyard and there’s no way you can have a swimming pool then think again. Your colour choices aren’t restricted either. Obviously there is a large range of tile colours to choose from but you are really only limited by your imagination.
But most importantly, when it comes to quality, Rob Guseli from Mediterranean Pools explains that “no other type of construction will outlast a well built concrete pool”. Whether it’s a lap pool, vanishing edge pool or simply a See Mediterranean Swimming Pools, Melbourne Road Shepparton.

What would Annie’s mother have thought of the home after it was completed in 1886? It featured a central watchtower and castellated walls which made it the envy of the district. The maid’s quarters were at the rear of the home, alongside the kitchen. Neighbours were in awe. The toilet was under the roof of the main homestead and not out the back. From a cosy room in the watchtower Annie’s view extended for miles over featureless plains. Samuel would visit her and check on his sheep and his workers. Annie kept detailed records of the many birds which visited the property. A talented artist, she decorated the glass panels of the interior doors with paintings of local wildlife and Welsh village scenes. The beautiful artwork remains in the home today.
Whilst appearing quite grand from the exterior the inside of the home is extremely livable.
Samuel was a fine-looking man with excellent prospects when he proposed to Welsh born Mrs Ann Dobson. She replied that his home wasn’t grand enough and then sketched the illustrious residence she had imagined. He offered to build it for her, but she turned him down, saying she couldn’t live in such a barren landscape anyway. Samuel was overjoyed when Annie, Mrs Dobson’s daughter, offered to marry him instead. At their wedding in 1875 Samuel’s age was listed as 39 - presumably to make the age difference between them appear less. He was actually 42. Annie was eighteen. Soon the couple started planning their dream home. Each night Annie sat by the candlelight and in beautiful copperplate script, transcribed her husband’s detailed instructions to the builders. Samuel’s first job was to construct a kiln on the property to make the one million bricks needed for the magnificent home, which would be larger than any around.
20
www.homescapemag.com.au
Photos of the Rake’s elegant residence featured in glossy English magazines and were used to promote the area to potential immigrants. For years old Mr Spencer, from a neighbouring property, reputedly grumbled, ‘I was hoodwinked by those bloody pictures.’ Many settlers were attracted to the district by these fairytale images, only to be surprised and sometimes disappointed when they arrived. Australia was still a harsh and difficult land. Even in the grandest home in the district, life was no fairytale existence. Annie and Samuel had six children. In 1878 Annie gave birth to her first son, who drowned at two years of age. Her eldest daughter died at fifteen. Then Samuel passed away in 1897. Their youngest son was only nine years of age. Annie was forty years old when she placed this tribute to her husband in the Riverine Herald:

Carmel and Rick treat the stewardship of this grand home’s history and the memory of its previous owners seriously. Carmel has tirelessly collected stories from those once connected to the house. Over the years people have provided photos and curios associated with the Rake family. Two of the home’s retired maids were valuable contributors. One returned to the house at age ninety four. Carmel gave her a tour of the home and the sprightly woman managed to climb the steep steps to the watchtower. She was quite excited because as a servant she hadn’t been allowed in the front of the residence. After Samuel died Annie’s son, Ambrose, took over the running of the farm. He and his wife lived there for a number of years. Rita Rake was more modern in her attitudes, even allowing a maid to move into a section of the house when her young child became ill.
The Drawing Room has duck egg blue wall paper and elegant furnishings.

The smell of leather pervades a reading room lined with antique books.
Annie died in 1934, aged seventy eight. Only two of Annie’s children out-lived her. None of Annie’s children had children of their own but amazingly the home stayed in the Rake family until 1970. Fortunately all the property’s owners have kept its original features intact. Interior renovation has been done with great sensitivity. The remains of the kiln which was used to make the bricks for the home are still evident. From information passed on by the maids and others associated with the home we’ve woven together the tale of Samuel, Annie and the grand home he built for her. If old Mr. Spencer was alive he’d grumble about darned magazines and fairytales. But fairytales happen in castles – don’t they? [hs]

Euroa Butter Factory by Carmel Johnson
Lucky for Euroa, Rebecca Gannon fell in love with the town’s famous butter factory and had a clear vision of how it should be used today.
In its colorful past as a prosperous butter factory, the business was said to have put Euroa on the map, and its most recent owner now believes the beautiful historic building can once again be a drawcard to Victoria’s picturesque Strathbogie region.
The grand old factory has been lovingly transformed to provide boutique accommodation, and function spaces for occasions from a more intimate gathering to large corporate events.
Rebecca and husband Russell Griffin missed the chance to buy the factory early in 2004 when the auction was scheduled for the day after their wedding, but to Rebecca’s delight that deal fell through and they secured the property on Christmas eve.
“I saw it as a lifestyle property for us but also a chance to build something in the largely untapped tourism/accommodation market in this beautiful region,” Rebecca said.
24

Fortunately during the 1990’s successive owners began restoring the buildings to save it from demolition and today the transformation under the tasteful and sympathetic eye of Rebecca and Russell is breathtaking.
The original loading/receival door, hoists and many other original features have been maintianed and guests can enjoy breakfast in the old milk delivery room where some original factory parts and the old flagstone floor live on.
The old and the new, the modern and the not so modern furnsishings, mix beautifully throughout for a tasteful eclectic atmosphere. Lounge and dining areas provide relaxing spaces for guests and a long dining table to seat up to 16 is a feature of
“I wanted to build a high quality, unique style of accommodation that will attract people to the area and provide us eventually with a fulltime lifestyle.”
The current Euroa Butter Factory was built in 1901 after the original building was destroyed by fire. The majestic chimney stands as a proud reminder of the building’s steam-driven past, while the original slate foundations and brick walls are a tribute to the era.

In The Outdoor Room, Jamie Durie sets out to show Australians that our backyards can be so much more than a patch of grass framing a Hills Hoist. In each episode, Jamie travels to a new country and returns with a collection of bright ideas that he and his team, featuring horticulturalist Jody Rigby, use to transform a lucky garden into an ‘outdoor room’ that alters the way its owners live. The Outdoor Room crew captures stunning images from Jamie’s travels as he seeks inspiration from elaborate and resourceful gardens, markets and unique landscapes of each exotic nation he visits. Some of Australia’s most celebrated chefs, including Luke Mangan, Tobie Puttock and Neil Perry, also join The Outdoor Room team each week to capture the flavour of Jamie’s destinations as they recreate authentic national dishes.

”It started out small, and we just kept adding to it, before too long we had all this... It’s our culinary joy. ”
“Right next to the vegetable garden I have my rose garden where I love to pick roses for inside the house and for friends throughout the season.” The couple’s idea for this successful culinary garden, as with most good things, came about by chance. A friend and local fruit grower had given them some tomato seedlings as a gift. ”They were wrapped up just sitting so cutely in a piece of newspaper. We felt compelled to create a totally organic vegetable garden. ”It started out small, and we just kept adding to it. Before too long we had all this. It’s our culinary joy. ” Both owners say that the flavor and size of fresh produce found in supermarkets and other fruit and vegetable shops does not compare to that from an organic home garden.
36
www.homescapemag.com.au
“The flavor is truly divine. And why wouldn’t you have a garden like this? It’s beneficial for you and for the environment.”
“We don’t ever have to worry about watering really and there’s never any water wasted.”
Careful planning and design has gone a long way to increasing the efficiency and productivity of the garden. A separate box-hedge that runs across the west-face of the garden, helps protect from wind exposure, while is distant enough to allow for plenty of sun exposure. Untreated red gum sleepers contain organic soil, covered by a thick layer of mulch to help sustain soil moisture. Beneath the soil is a layer of old straw to attract worms and other ‘good bugs’, while compost generated from kitchen scraps, leaves and lawn clippings is regularly added on top of the soil to nourish plants. A clever companion planting method has also been

know there’s never any water wasted.” Feathered friends Ruby and Mrs Hall (named after football player Barry Hall), are tireless workers in the garden helping to break down kitchen scraps and producing two eggs daily. “It’s a complete system, we don’t waste anything. Nutrients from kitchen scraps all end up back in the garden. “We would recommend everyone have their own organic vegetable garden. You get so much enjoyment out of it. It’s a must for every home.” [hs]

Country People From Yarrawonga, Shepparton, Echuca world’s newest nations. Homescape’s Rhonda Sutton describes how during a recent trip to East Timor with three friends she formed friendships that will last a life-time.
We jolted down the precipitous side of a mountain, completely lost, heading to a village which sees few outsiders and where most people travel by foot. Pauline tried the phone but there was no reception. We hadn’t any water but luckily Judie is a resourceful country woman and pulled some gin and tonic out of a bag. ‘It’ll be good malaria protection!’ joked Dianne. Pauline, Judie, Dianne and I were travelling to our local shire’s friendship district of Lequidoe. Pauline teaches at Echuca West Primary, which has a friendship relationship with a school there. For many years Judie taught senior students about East Timor’s struggle for independence. Whilst it was Judie and Pauline’s first visit Diane had been there before. On her last trip she helped Rotary re-build a school. I first came to Timor in 2003, after a girlfriend cajoled me into it.

Overwhelmed by the poverty they observed, George and Mary started SETAG, one of fifty Friendship associations across Australia helping the struggling nation. The Shepparton East Timor Assistance Group has raised funds towards a community rehabilitation centre in Baucau which will soon provide therapy and education for disabled kids. Our Echuca based group has supported several ventures in our friendship region and this year we organized a trip there to see first hand what we’ve achieved and what more needs to be done.

The warm welcomes we received the next day whilst touring the impoverished area made our shocking night’s sleep and all our work back home feel well worth the effort. Now we realize it’s a privilege to help this isolated region, as even small things can make a huge difference there. We inspected the solar panels and wind turbine our group installed for lighting at the health centre and administration building. There is no electricity supply in Lequidoe. The school will treasure the resources Pauline brought with her – a manual typewriter, exercise books, pencils and teaching aides. The principal explained their biggest problem is that senior students can’t study at night time.
When our group was allocated a friendship district we were initially shocked that it was so difficult to reach. We certainly discovered that when we became lost on our way there. But we eventually found reception and made contact with Chris Adams, who guided us to Lequidoe. Chris is an Australian Volunteer, who lives in the community and assists the locals with project management.
Above L-R: Judith O’Farrell, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, Pauline Cleary and Dianne Holland in Dili at a gathering of representatives of Australia’s 50 East Timor friendship groups.
Chris had arranged accommodation in a ramshackle hut, perched on the top of a long mountain ridge. It was the family home of a student we support to study law in Dili. That night we cooked as villagers do, on a smoky open fire. Choking and with watery eyes, we became even more determined to garner support for a project to build fuel efficient stoves in these homes! Fuel efficient stoves have a flue, so help prevent illness from respiratory disease. They also reduce deforestation because they use a third less wood. We went to bed, trying to make ourselves comfortable on lumpy mattresses and attempting to ignore the soft scratching noises above. Above: A man dressed for a traditional ceremony in Dili. In the distance a massive statue of Christ is perched on the mountain top, looking over the city’s spectacular coastline.

Should I Borrow Money to Invest?
By Jeffrey Lucy, ASIC Chairman
Borrowing money to invest, or ‘gearing’, can be a high-risk venture and great care needs to be exercised, especially if you’re investing for the first time or you are borrowing large amounts of money. Negative gearing is where your borrowing costs (interest and fees) exceed the income you receive on your investment, and positive gearing is where your borrowing costs are fully covered by the investment income.
I think there are two possible advantages of gearing.
You can increase potential profits If you borrow money to invest in shares or real estate, and they increase in value, then you get the benefit of that gain on your original investment (capital gain) when you sell the asset (less the borrowing costs). Equally, you get the benefit of any dividends, bonus share issues or rents that may be made while you own the asset.
You can obtain a tax benefit Negative gearing is when your income from the investment is less than the cost of the investment (that is, interest that you are paying to your lending institution on the loan). The difference between the two amounts can generally be used as a deduction on your taxable income. Needless to say, the benefit of any tax deduction is dependant on tax rates payable by the investor. A decision to borrow to purchase an asset requires serious consideration. Specifically, gearing is a strategy best suited to you if: • you have enough income from other sources, like a secure salary, or have a reserve of funds to meet

appreciation of the volatility of your investments and the risks involved. But deciding whether to borrow money to invest depends on your own personal needs and circumstances. If you are not sure, get advice from a licensed adviser, who is obliged under the law to look at your personal situation. It could be the difference between potentially making a profit or risking your investment with the possibility of further losses if the sale of the asset does not cover the original debt.

Many people and businesses borrow to invest every day. Generally, as long as the investment itself is sound, borrowing can be sound too. If you are an experienced investor, are in a high income tax bracket and have income from other sources, then gearing can work for you.

Travel Adventure
Think Malaysia The vibrant culture, charming hospitality, great shopping and a wide variety of cuisines is what attracted our small group to Malaysia for a recent holiday. We were looking for an affordable overseas trip and like most people we considered Thailand and Vietnam as well known destinations for a low cost holiday but we decided on Malaysia and we are so glad we did. Malaysia has realised it can be a competitive holiday destination and in 2007 launched a “Malaysia truly Asia” campaign to coincide with its 50 years of independence. Malaysia is now a budding tourism place and it offered us a fabulous seven day dose of retail therapy during the cold Australian winter. I travelled with a girlfriend and our mothers to Malaysia in July this year with only one thing on our minds, well maybe two. One was, of course, shopping, and the other, pure indulgence.
We were lucky enough to view a feeding of Sabah’s well known orang-utan species. These weird and wonderful creatures share 97% of our human makeup and for a small price of AUS$30 we were able to sponsor the rehabilitation of cheeky 2 year old Yoda. There was so much to see, do, eat and simply gasp over. Malaysia offered us a quick escape to a civilised, hassle free, and captivating location in South East Asia. I must say the $6 manicures will have me travelling back sooner rather than later. So next time you are looking for that low-cost getaway, think Malaysia.
Contributed by Shepparton resident, Stephanie Inglis. Stephanie is in her 20s and works at the Greater Shepparton City Council.
Four days in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, involved day long bargain hunting, spa therapy, food, cocktails and more shopping! Kuala Lumpur is home to a number of large shopping malls that offer a huge selection of stores with great prices. Good shoes are extremely affordable and I managed to add six pairs to my collection back home. Mostly our days would consist of department stores by day to keep out of the heat, followed by some pampering, a delicious meal, then off to the markets at night. After those productive few days, we escaped the hustle and bustle of the city to rest our feet in Kota Kinabalu, found on the tropical island of Sabah. We spent our final three days based in the luxurious resort ‘Nexus’. Daily temperatures were on average 35°C so the crystal clear beaches and exotic cocktails were a great cure for those hot humid days. If you’re into climbing, Mount Kinabalu is a challenging task. We only managed to walk a few kilometres around its gorgeous National Park, to find ourselves crossing a 158 metre long and 41 metre high canopy - that’s equivalent to a 13 storey building!

Also known as “doctor fish”, they litera lly feed off dead skin cells found on your feet leaving your skin clean and smooth and is extremely ticklish. METHOD:
• Place cream butter & sugar in electric mixer until fluffy & light in colour • Sift flour and baking powder together — set aside • Add eggs to mixer one at a time, gradually fold the flour mixture and the milk alternatively to this mixture using a metal spoon to cut through and retain aeration in the mix. At the last milk addition add the juice and zest of the lemon & lime • Spray cups or moulds with cooking spray or lightly grease and divide mixture evenly amongst 6 - 8 moulds. • Cover each mould with foil and place in a baking dish half filled with water — cover the tray with foil and bake for 35mins at 200ºc • Reduce some orange juice with castor sugar to make the sauce & serve this over top with cream or ice cream & strawberries.
