When I left the TV station I opened a restaurant in Shepparton. Dad said I should know how to cook in case the chef walked out! I later helped manage a restaurant in Port Douglas.
In past years many people stayed at the same job all their life. Why haven’t you? I learn things pretty quickly. I guess once I’ve mastered something I look for the next challenge.
What are you passionate about now? I’ve come full circle back to architecture and I’m excited about designing eco friendly homes. I now run a design business in Mulwala. I’m very proud of a fully solar powered home that I designed which is nearing completion in Echuca‌. and I love spending time with special friends.

The Carr ingt on Rest aura nt, Sheppart on by Carmel Johnson
Looking out across the tree tops of Shepparton’s Lake Victoria precinct from the upstairs rooms of The Carrington, it is easy to understand why Mary Zurcas is so passionate about her business and Shepparton.
Born and raised in Shepparton, Mary has been an integral part of the present accommodation complex for almost thirty years. During these years Mary has seen the transformation of what was initially a ten room motel that she and her late husband Tassie bought in 1979, to the magnificently appointed Carrington Motel. The complex is adjacent to one of Shepparton’s iconic landmarks, The Carrington Manor.

Business Profile During the last decade The Carrington has been significantly transformed.
Mary’s youngest daughter was two years old when the ten unit motel, known as the Lake View, was purchased. An additional nine rooms were added and Mary and her young family continued to live on site until the girls became teenagers. The motel was then leased for the next eight years before Mary and Tassie returned to their operational role. In 1996 following Tassie’s sudden death, Mary undertook a major building extension and refurbishment and the new enhanced complex opened in 1999 as The Carrington Motel. Mary has taken great pride in achieving the recognition that her award winning accommodation is so renowned for.

back next time... and that makes me happy.” Mary is enthusiastically committed to ensuring that her business meets the needs of her guests and works six days a week overseeing the operations of the motel and the manor. And whilst the success of her business is important, it is her daughters and grand-daughters that give her the greatest joy and happiness. “I am so proud of my girls, she says smiling. “To see my two daughters grow into fine young women and the good mothers that they are, is what matters most to me. In fact I am more proud of my girls than the motel.” During the last decade The Carrington development and its lakeside location have been significantly transformed.

The Carrington Manor, is regarded as a premium function venue The Carrington Manor, which opened in 2001, is regarded as a premium function venue with several opulently decorated stately rooms. The RACV six star rated accommodation is located in the six upstairs suites with their commanding views of the lake and its tranquil surrounds. Earlier this year all of the original 19 motel units were refurbished and the upstairs suites freshened up. The restaurant has been extended and also refurbished and again confirms Mary’s commitment for continuous improvement. Mary’s vision is to provide good quality accommodation and believes that she and her staff are continually striving to do so. The Carrington has an outstanding location, and despite the present lack of water, it is the lake that her guests so enthusiastically comment on. “And of course if we are good enough they will continue to come back… and that’s what makes me really happy,” she says beaming her trademark smile. When it arrived back in Echuca the hull of the Hero needed extensive repairs before being refloated in 2000. A team of committed helpers began restoring the superstructure of the boat, using building techniques and materials used a century ago. The pipes on the boat are copper and the glass in the leadlight windows is hand blown.

across Australia for the elegant antique fittings and furnishings. Ornate fold down basins once graced old railway carriages. The original Royal Doulton toilet bowls are hand painted and came from England. The cosy cabins have pressed metal ceilings and shiny brass beds. If it weren’t for the soft thrashing of the paddles and gentle hissing of steam, passengers may think they are inside a stately home. In what can be best described as a labour of love Gary and Irene have lavished time and money into every Gary Byford is just one of these people. Twenty years ago he and his wife Irene bought the remains of a paddlesteamer, which is quite aptly named the Hero. They lifted it out of the river at Mildura and moved it back home to Echuca, where it had been built in 1874. For over seventy years the Hero operated from Echuca, delivering supplies up the Murrumbidgee and the Darling and bringing back barges laden with wool and other cargo.
Passengers were housed in its three
cabins. In the 1940s the Hero carried firewood from the Barmah forest – on one trip filling over thirty railway trucks with red gum blocks. In 1950 the Hero was moved to Mildura. She was used to rescue cattle caught in the massive 1956 floods. Not long after she caught fire and sank. The Hero was stripped and left to decay.

‘We were a lot younger when we started and didn’t fully appreciate the amount needing to be done,‘ recollects Gary.
‘There were moments when we wished we
hadn’t done it. It was challenging financially and at times seemed just too hard.’ Many of Australia’s historical treasures have been lost or are in disrepair for want of attention and money. Thanks to Gary and Irene’s passionate obsession the Hero is now arguably the finest and most luxurious of the large fleet of paddlesteamers now plying the Murray River. ‘Since a young child, our daughter Belinda wanted to one day be married on it,’ says Gary. ‘After years of hard work we feel very lucky to see it finished.’ The restoration of the Hero was completed just in time for Belinda’s wedding. The original Methodist church is now an appealing guest house and is a clever fusing of history and modern day contemporary comforts. Original features blend beautifully with the simple but stylish additions to the building popular with couples on a romantic weekend retreat, brides and grooms or families and groups on a short break or holiday. “We were keen to find out the history of the two churches to share their past with our guests and customers. “With the help of an elderly neighbour whose family donated the land originally for the purpose of building a church, we have pieced some of its background together”, Cheryl said. The site was purchased from the Crown in 1913 by three local men - a school teacher, storekeeper and builder- for eight pounds and ten shillings. It remained the property of the three local men until 1980 when the Uniting Church of Australia Property Trust took possession.

In the backyard there is a swimming pool edged in Castlemaine rock. A paved area provides a tranquil spot to sit for coffee and contemplation, a favorite place for Peter and Norma. It is here they reveal that it will soon be an end of a Nethersole era as the property has recently been sold. “I am OK with it at the moment but I can’t bear to think about when it comes time to actually leave,” Norma says. Peter is a little less emotional but admits to it being a big decision. The couple sold their large orchard business about two years ago and have made the decision to downsize at home as well. After sharing some time, even if only for a short while, in this garden and learning about its evolution, I can understand the heartbreak that will come with leaving. But at least the passion, the family and the memories will live on with them wherever they settle. [hs]

Franc and Marija Vodusek and their son Daimien planted 30 000 olive trees on 121 hectares 10 years ago and today the business, Rich Glen, is poised to boom. The impressive planting of the Mediterranean fruit stretches from the Murray Valley Highway just outside Yarrawonga to the picturesque banks of the Murray River. It is here the Vodusek’s have built a processing plant among the never ending straight rows of the grey green trees and have developed a quality olive oil under the Rich Glen label. The grove is now producing almost 100 000 litres of first cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. “We feel really passionate about the quality of our oil, the fact that we harvest and process the fruit within hours, means that our oil has a unique freshness as well as many health benefits in which the world is becoming so much more aware of,” Daimien says.

Visitors to the olive farm can now taste and purchase products such as table olives, salad dressings and dukkahs in the small product shop set up recently by the couple. “The farm gate shop has been a really fun business to start up. It enabled us to see what sells and to be able to get peoples opinions on our packaging, labeling and most of all flavour. “We have been overwhelmed by the comments people make on the aroma and freshness in flavour compared to supermarket oils”. Daimien has recently returned from a trip to China where he met with a number of potential export clients and Ros has secured contracts to supply olive oil to a number of top class restaurants in Melbourne. Daimien juggles work at his Yarrawonga butchery, Vodusek Meats, with his brother Rod and managing the olive farm with his Dad. Ros has recently decided to wind down her catering business, Cobram Florist Café Catering to concentrate on the marketing and product development at Rich Glen, and their newest venture, the on-farm product shop. bound (and have been for nearly nine years), these achievements are nothing short of amazing.
1. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and shaving. 2. Take a shorter shower. A shower only needs to be long enough to soap up, wash and rinse off. 3. When filling your bath check the temperature and only fill to the required depth. 4. Place a bucket in the shower to capture the water while waiting for the hot water to arrive and reuse this on your garden.
Toilet Tips 1. Use the half flush button when flushing the toilet. 2. Replace a single flush toilet with a dual flush toilet. 3. If you don’t have a half flush button install a flush control device that only flushes the toilet as long as you press the button. Or place a container filled with water in the cistern, 4. Check your toilet for leaks. Place a couple of drops of food colouring in the cistern – leave it for 15 minutes and if colour appears in the toilet bowl when you haven’t flushed you have a leak.

By his own admission, Grant “went off the tracks and hung around with the wrong crowd” when he was in his mid teens. Two weeks after his 18th birthday he was lying in the back of a ute being driven at high speed along a rough road when the driver suddenly lost control and ploughed into a tree. “Unfortunately for me I was not knocked out and I remember everything. The pain was excruciating and because the ute caught fire I was pulled out and moved three times,” he recalls.

There is no denying the shores of Lake Mulwala is the location of some beautiful houses but not all can claim to be award winning homes. But this contemporary double storey home is both beautiful and has made it to the top four Victorian finalists in the recent HIA Custom Built Home over $1 million category. Mulwala builder Marcus Walshe of Walshe’s Alternative Living is the proud creator of the construction which first won the judges hearts as the HIA North-East Regional Home of the Year, the Regional Custom Built Home over $500,000 and the Regional Overall Custom Built Home of the Year at the HIA North East
Regional Housing Awards. “To win one of these awards is great, but to win three was fantastic. As the Overall Custom Built Home of the Year, we were eligible for the main award and it was a huge thing to be recognised as one of the best four homes in the state in that category,” Marcus says. The awards recognize excellence in the construction, design, innovation and technology of housing. Marcus, a builder for 20 years, and his wife Anne, started their own company eight years ago and have built a reputation for individual and distinctive design with absolute attention to detail. “This house is packed with amazing features and this

Shane was recommended to us and we’re thrilled. He personally designed a system and we love what it can do. It’s so neat and tidy, all tucked away in the one location and we can now put a CD on and play it anywhere in the house!” – Michele & Rodney Perry, Moama Your sound… your vision… where want it… when you want it!

“We build for lifestyle but all the environmental boxes are ticked and we use a lot of natural materials such as stone and timber.” The four bedroom home is north facing with the main living and kitchen/meals area overlooking Lake Mulwala and a lap pool with 10 jet water feature. In the Redgum ‘fiddleback’ timber kitchen there is stainless steel kicker draws hidden at floor level, a large walk in pantry to house kitchen accessories and a touch screen which operates the homes lighting, heating, cooling, music, audio visual and multi media features.
Technology is at its finest here, with the owner needing state-of-the-art facilities to run a multi million dollar business from his office in his Yarrawonga home. The family room has a sandstone fireplace and full north facing wall of glass doors which open onto a large paved patio area with undercover barbecue and double pizza oven. The downstairs guest bedroom with own ensuite also opens onto the pool/spa. Upstairs

The heavy internal doors are crafted from Merbau and cost $1500 each. Again the choice and style of timber and raw materials inspires a relaxed but very luxurious feel in the home. Double glazing has been used throughout, pelmets to all blinds and curtains to maximize heating and cooling, extra insulation in walls and ceilings and there is a 3200 litre underground rainwater harvesting tank. All these features will reduce running costs in the long term. Custom built umbrellas on a pivoting swing arm, a sandpit under retractable decking and stylish portable table systems stored in the ski shed all add to the wow factor in the feature packed home. Gosford Mt White Brown Range sandstone has been used on the exterior walls and the same colored tiles used on paved areas. The ‘altache clad’ (cedar with aluminium strip) feature walls continue the contemporary theme. “We tend to build for the lifestyle market not resale and position is everything for these projects. “It is a real buzz having clients who trust you completely with their home and we are able to follow it through from start to fit out.” Marcus says. Former Hospital...
Transformed by Carmel Johnson
Eleven years ago a local businessman Nejat Mackali purchased the Mooroopna Hospital which had been the site of the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital when first
established in 1876. The initial “hospital” was a small bark hut built on the banks of the Goulburn River. Early
records indicate that the first “hospital” had two beds and the only doctor at the time travelled on horseback from Rushworth.
As the population of Mooroopna increased with a resultant demand for medical and Hospital services,
more substantial buildings were constructed with the
Hospital playing a significant role in the Mooroopna and surrounding districts communities development.
However it became apparent in the 1950’s that the

in Graham Street was completed, and the acute
services from Mooroopna could move across. The
Rehabilitation Ward and Grutnzer House remained at
the Mooroopna site until the early 1990’s when their new facilities became available in Shepparton. Following the purchase of the buildings by Mr Mackali, the site lay idle for several years before a planning permit from the City of Greater Shepparton was granted for student and back-packer accommodation. In 2003 Mr Mackali successfully applied for a building
permit from Council to build a 260 bed aged care facility, and which has included the renovation and refurbishment of the former Nurses Home to sixty
seven universal independent apartments. These have now been completed.

In 2006 Mr Mackali introduced the Mercy Health Aged Care service to the Mooroopna site and for the last twelve months the Mercy have been working to establish their new headquarters at the Mooroopna site. Mercy Aged Care Mooroopna will form an essential part of the development of an ageing precinct that will enable local residents to remain within their community even if their care changes over time. The site will be known as the Mooroopna Hospital Retirement Village (MHRV). In the coming weeks the Nurses Quarters Universal will be open for inspection, and with everything on track it is expected the first residents will move in May 2009. In late 2009 Mr Mackali and his consortium will commence the Stage 2 development which is the refit and refurbishment of the site’s main building for a conversion to a 90 bed Aged Care Facility. Stage 3 will also commence in late 2009 and will be the construction 90 studio apartments to be known as The Base. With everything on schedule the final stages 4 & 5 which will be 128 universal apartments and to be known as the Athenaeum (80) and Golf View Development (48) should be finished and occupied by the beginning of 2012. Contemporary and spacious, The Hartley is best known for its capacity to provide growing families with the best of both worlds. After looking around at various options, Paul and Jess decided upon The Hartley, one of Dennis Family Homes’ most spacious houses.
The home’s balance between formal and informal living culminates in the cleverly designed kitchen and meals area. This bright, open space is ideal for entertaining all year round, and enables busy parents to keep an eye on the kids. Paul says that he and Jess certainly appreciate the extra storage space that comes with The Hartley design: “The walk in robe is extra large, and there’s loads of cupboard space throughout the house. In fact, I think there are a few cupboards and drawers in the kitchen that we haven’t even used yet”. Paul and Jess found Dennis Family Homes to be “better than their competitors” in terms of service, and reliability. After exploring their options with several other domestic building companies, Paul says the choice was easy:

“Dennis Family Homes were very accommodating, and took the time to listen to what we wanted for our new home. They were happy to help us make a number of small changes to the original design, and we’ve ended up with a unique and well constructed property”. Attention to detail was clearly a contributing factor to Jess and Paul’s overall satisfaction with Dennis Family Homes: “Construction finished ahead of schedule, and the whole project took less than six months. They poured the slab in the last week of May, and we were ready to move in by November. ...They even helped us construct an outdoor shed to match the front of our house” says Paul. Like all Dennis Family Homes, The Hartley comes with a range of six optional facades. From Urban chic, to old world Heritage style, there’s a Hartley facade to suit even

Wealth Finance The MB+M Report
Branding requires your energy, passion and commitment and to give your business the best chance of achieving brilliant branding here are some tips for achievement: • Lead with passion • Develop a clear strategy • Make your brand an integral part of every decision you make • Be different • Ensure clarity and purpose • Don’t deviate from your branding • Deliver consistently • Build trust • Manage your brand • Stay relevant • Always deliver • Build emotion • Live and breathe the brand • Evolve • Be prepared for long haul
How Your Branding Can Put You In Front The last few months have seen a completer upheaval of the world’s financial sector and infrastructure resulting in confusion and uncertainty in the market place. Most companies are appraising their business and assessing their position in the market place and including their branding. The branding of your business is vitally important and contrary to popular opinion it is not only your logo, business signage or your advertising campaign. These are components of how your customer identifies your business, but your particular brand goes way beyond this. A brand is a distinctive and long term opinion or view held in the minds of your customers/clients –as well as your management team, your staff and your competitors. It is the core component of your business and conjures up an impression which will ultimately result in customer/client purchase…..or they go elsewhere! During the last few months MB+M Business Solutions have been conducting free seminars addressing issues relating to the range of available investment products. These have been well attended and will be again available in 2009.
The forum will be facilitated by Andrew Geddes, Director FMRC Smiththink PtyLtd. For details about registering for this event contact MB+M on 58 219177. MB+M partner Rebecca Woolstencroft recently hosted a lunch to gauge the interest for the establishment of a Young Professional Womens Network.
In February 2009 MB+M Business Solutions will host a Young Entrepreneurs and Business Owners Management Forum .
