Welcome Welcome to our spring edition of Homescape which is brimming with great stories about people, their homes, their lifestyles and achievements.

a number of events and activities to showcase the diverse range of attractions which each year bring thousands of visitors to our region.

With the days getting longer, the birds twittering earlier and the prettiest blossom everywhere, it seems that Spring is not far away. I don’t know about you, but for me it’s that time of the year when “spring cleaning” seems so appropriate. It is the time to get outside and clean up the garden and the remnants of winter, and time inside to reorganize, recycle and redistribute elsewhere. If only I listened to myself!

This year Homescape is pleased to be the major sponsor for the Tourism business lunch on Monday the 19th October at Shepparton’s GV Hotel.

In this bumper edition you will read about many wonderful tourist attractions in our 52 Great Discoveries, which has been delivered with your Homescape Magazine.

Cheryl Hammer has captured the Dookie spirit in the My Town, My Place feature and Rhonda Sutton’s interview with Claire Duke dismisses the myth that lawn bowling is only for “older” people.

Tourism week will be celebrated in the week commencing the 19th October and the Greater City of Shepparton’s Tourism committee have organized

Lots more to enjoy in this edition... Happy reading!

You will also read some inspirational and interesting stories about people living, working and contributing to our region - as well as having a snapshot of several very clever house renovations.

Ed McKeon former Shepparton Resident Ed Mckeon, Co-owner of Tawriffic and winner of 1989 Melbourne Cup The McKeon name is synonymous with women’s fashion in Shepparton from the 1950’s to the late 1980’s. Son Ed, was and still is, an avid supporter of the horse racing industry and in 1989 his persistence paid off when a horse he had part ownership in called Tawriffic won the Melbourne Cup. Homescape caught up with Ed to reflect on the magic of the first Tuesday in November 1989.

Ed, Tell us about this photo This photo was taken 200m before the finish line and we had just drawn to the lead, and won going away.

Did you have much success with other horses before that magical day back in 1989? sizes 000 - 8

That day in Nov 1989 is still very real in our memories. We’d had some success in earlier years with Harcourt Terrace, Redcliffe Gardens, Natural Trump, True Score, Lord Shiner and Times Square.

Tell us about that day in November. We had come down from Shepparton the previous year with 20 friends, hopefully to celebrate, unfortunately he ran 10th! The next year we were down to 6 friends, and he won, but after the race we had 2000 new friends! Holding the Cup with my family in the mounting yard is a moment I will never forget.

You brought the actual Cup back to Shepparton the day after the race, where did you take it? Directly to the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club, where everyone was waiting for us. The drive into Shepparton was amazing as there were balloons in our colours hanging from the trees at Arcadia and then in our street. I then took the Cup to all the Pubs and many schools, it was as though the whole area had won the Cup. A great feeling

Did Tawriffic go on and win more major races? He won two more races, and died at the Stud in Ireland six years ago. I did have some success with one of his sons, “Tooborack”.

Are you are still involved in racing and breeding horses? Yes absolutely, it will never leave my blood! Horses that I have a share in include Exceed All Limits and Just Sioux Me, it will be exciting in the future.

We’re bringing back seven day, all-day dining. The kitchen is open from 7am until 9.30pm and the bar closes at 10.30pm. I think it’s valuable for people to know we are always open.

When Dean and Penny Anderson moved into their heritage listed home close to Shepparton’s CBD their first and biggest challenge was how to fit what they wanted into their backyard – a paltry 10 metre by eight metre space flanked by a driveway and their neighbour’s fence. A swimming pool, outdoor living area, barbecue and garden needed to find a place in this small space so some ingenious ideas and clever manipulation of these lifestyle features was needed. Today the family of four enjoys a 7 metre by 7 metre pool, gorgeous resort-like living space on Mirboo decking, tropical plantings with raised timber boxes and a patch of lawn, which is synthetic so there is no mowing. The transformation from an ugly, bare patch of lawn with pavers leading to a clothes line is nothing short of breathtaking.

was custom designed to fit the yard and offers deep water swimming as well as a shallow “beach area with spa-like jets for bubbles - the perfect spot for a beverage on a balmy night. The pool is the highlight both day and night, becoming a magnificent water feature with alternating flashes of colour from strobe LED lights turning the pool blood red, deep green, purple and even a brighter hue of blue. This lighting option is now available for all new pools. A concrete and tiled pool was chosen for flexibility of design and considerations such as working around sewer lines and the tight aspect of the working space. The pool coping is a porcelain tile with pebble inlay and is in a similar shade as the surrounding rendered walls which provides a neutral canvass for the palms, agaves and other succulents, some thriving in the dark timber lined beds and tall pots, all made by homeowner, Dean.

The Aquazone pool , in deep brilliant blue mosaic tiles,

Coupled with the patch of synthetic grass, which is cleaned by blower vac, this garden is deliberately low maintenance. The back garden wall showcases boxed stacked stone and Buddha keeps a watchful eye on all activity. Builtin wall lighting softens all these textures to create a feature more like art work than a mere barrier to the clothes line and back shed. Brush fencing divides the yard from the drive way and carport and softens the dominant stone walls. Once the tall gate is closed this gorgeous oasis can be enjoyed in complete privacy. A full wall of sliding glass doors opens up the entire back of the house from the open plan living and kitchen and links immediately onto Mirboo decking where a generous low table with comfortable oversized chairs beckon you to sit a while. This is where Penny’s favoured resort style furnishings and comforts come into their own. Crisp, fresh fabrics, cushions and table decorations ooze luxury and relaxed living. Large candles, glass urns and silk accessories are perfect for day or night entertaining.

Transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Aquazone Pools the ultimate in concrete pool design technology and architectural elegance.

The decking also sports a taller bar table with stools for more informal gatherings, made easy with nearby beverage fridge and stainless steel barbecue – a favourite method of cooking in the warmer months. Soft down lights and a ceiling fan complete the atmosphere in this stunning transformation. Homescape looks forward to revisiting these home renovators in the future to witness what other magic they have weaved over their two storey residence. [hs]

a hidden jewel in the “food and wine crown” of the Goulburn and Murray Valley regions. But the secret is about to be spoilt, by a group of local and usually opposing master chefs who have joined forces to place their twin towns firmly on regional Australia’s food and wine map. A recent gastronomy event, held at Echuca Oscar W’s Restaurant, saw master chefs from four local restaurants come together to prepare a seven course tasting experience. Tourism Victoria’s Tom Smith headed a prestigious list of guests, along with local shire representatives, tourism, food and wine industry members and regional food producers, for a first class food and wine experience. This was a first for Echuca-Moama, with chefs and waiting staff from Morrisons Riverview Winery and Restaurant, Oscar W’s Wharfside Redgum Grill and Deck Bar, Ceres Restaurant and Coriander B&B and Function Centre, coming together to share a kitchen and more importantly, checking their egos at the door.

Listing your Property deciding to sell your home is one of the biggest decisions you can make and it is important that you are well prepared for the selling process. Gerald Sabri Residential Sales Consultant kevin Hicks Real estate has the expertise to assist you in this process by discussing your property needs, researching and analyzing the market value of your home, and understanding what method of selling is best suited to your property and situation. At kevin Hicks Real estate we will only ever appraise your property at a price we believe we can achieve. If you are in a situation where the appraisal prices you receive have a large variation, it is advisable to obtain an independent valuation.

There are many agents trying

to buy your listing with inflated price assessments. Accurate estimates are the most essential key to ensuring sale success. Be realistic in your price positioning. The asking price cannot be what you need, rather it has to be what the property is worth. you cannot price a property on your emotional attachment. If the selling price is set too high this can often lead to properties becoming stale in the market place, eventually selling below its worth. Selling a property requires a skillful negotiation and quite a lot of effort. Those agents charging a cut price fee just can’t deliver the service. The biggest concern is that cheaper commission agents could under price houses to sell them quickly, leaving sellers getting less than they deserve. ensure your agent has a proven sales track record.

Nicole Male Residential Sales Consultant At kevin Hicks we will work with you every step of the way to ensure that your property is marketed successfully. By paying for your advertising you are in control of your advertising schedule - you can ensure it is promoted productively, reflecting the value of your property.

An engaging marketing strategy with

professional photography is the most effective way to showcase your home, giving your property the edge to attract potential buyers. How your home looks and feels is just as important as finding the right buyer for your property.

First

impressions count so make sure your home makes the right impression. most buyers prefer to view a property that is open for inspection. Buyers can see the interest in a property for themselves, it can create a sense of urgency, to act quickly. The best offers come from open homes.

Safeguard your Home & Possesions O’Sullivan Insurance Brokers are a locally owned and operated general insurance broker, specializing in all types of domestic and commercial insurance products. O’Sullivan Insurance Brokers understand that different domestic or commercial situations can attract different insurance exposures and O’Sullivans identify such exposure and discuss with the client, how best to structure insurance covers. When building or renovating a home, many facets should be considered relating to insurance: Are you engaging a licensed Builders? Are you registering yourself as an Owner Builder? If you are carrying out a renovation, what impact does the renovation have on your existing Home Insurance? These questions are just a few area’s that have raised concern and in some cases confusion with consumers when either building or renovating. It is very important that both you and the builder have a full understanding as to who is responsible for building materials onsite in case of theft or damage, whilst in the course of construction. Also who is responsible for Public liability exposures on site e.g. someone is seriously injured? In most cases these questions can be answered if you enter into a contract with a licensed Builder. When carrying out a renovation most insurers reduce covers in respect to existing structures, it is important you understand these limitations. Once your home is completed you should insure your home for a figure that represents the cost to re-build your home, you should not take land value into account when insuring your home. If your sum insured reflects replacement value and your home is structurally sound, you should make sure that your building is insured for re-instatement and replacement conditions. Any other conditions on your home could create problems in the event of a claim.

O’Sullivan Insurance Brokers can offer Insurance products relating to Commercial Insurance, including all trades and professions relating to the Building Industry, as well as property owners, hospitality, motor vehicles of all sizes, farming, retail and manufacturing. dISClAImeR: THe ABOVe InfORmATIOn IS GeneRAl AdVICe Only And We HAVe nOT COnSIdeRed Any IndIVIduAl’S PeRSOnAl needS.

Within the Insurance Industry there has been continued debate in regards to flood insurance. Only a few Insurers will offer flood cover to home owners. If you are at all concerned about possible future flood issues, we strongly suggest you check your current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) or contact our office for further advice.

A professionally prepared tax depreciation schedule can save you thousands of dollars in tax savings. • Do you own an investment property? • Is it providing you the best possible after tax return? • Are you claiming your eligible depreciation allowances? To maximise your returns, ask us to complete a comprehensive depreciation schedule presenting a detailed ten year analysis of the depreciable items and capital cost of your property. even if you have owned the property and not claimed deductions, speak to your accountant about adjusting past returns to take maximum advantage of this benefit.

Bring your Windows to life

It was more than seven decades ago the bones of this beautiful garden were laid and nurtured by Golden Fleece dynasty principal, Hamilton Sleigh and his wife. They commissioned the famed garden writer of the time Jennifer Stackhouse to design their private retreat. The fertile land on the banks of the Gouburn River, and its reliable source of irrigation, allowed this stately country garden to thrive. Its past owner’s penchant

- all providing swathes of dappled

shade for the more tender plantings and carpet-like lawn below. Today, owners Adam and Sophie Sangster, consider it a privilege to live in and enjoy this garden which has continued to be nurtured by two full time gardeners. It is also the playground for three year old Tom and Chloe, one. “We just love this garden and the way it changes each season, but its structure and good bones means it looks good all year,” Sophie says. bushes and ground cover beneath. The garden, now 2.4 hectares, is cleverly terraced to allow a gentle stroll from the back of the main house into the many rooms in the garden and typical of its time in Australian gardening history there are pockets of more free flowing plantings and growth to soften the striking formality of its design. The perfumed flowers of a magnolia are anxiously anticipated by Sophie, a magnolia lover, and the blossoms of fruit and other trees are a sight to be seen on the gloomier days of late winter. There is also bulb

filled beds teasing with spring colour, and cheerful daffodils are allowed to put on their display in lawned areas if they wish. White trumpet lilies enjoy a damp spot at the bottom of the garden and the hot colors of canna lilies come soon after . Seaside daisy creeps along stone edging and the yellow flower of Doricidum or Leopard’s Bane is used to border one terrace from another. The present owners’ have certainly stamped their own influence on the garden since their arrival in 2006. The river side of the main house has been painted a bright ‘Rastas’ pink with turquoise borders and draped in wisteria. Adam’s father, the late Robert Sangster, had a home in Barbados for more than 30 years where his son spent a great deal of his younger years. The Rastas colours are still a favourite of Adam’s, Sophie explains.

In early Spring the formal clipped hedging, ornate gates and stone work are a picture.

Amazing what a blind can do... Today’s styles are ideal for enclosing your verandah, pergola or outdoor entertaining area and can enhance the appearance as well as give you the protection you require. There are a wide range of window treatments for everyday practical needs including light control, temperature, and privacy… and with high-tech breathable fabrics that cut out up to 90% of harmful UV rays… you will still make a statement on any home or window.

We fully guarantee the quality of our products and installations, and our excellent service emphasises reliability, integrity and a commitment to customer value.

The Bali hut structures beside the outdoor pool and at the bottom of the garden have also been added since the Sangster’s moved in. The grass topped hut beside the pool provides a shaded oasis against the summer sun and is protected by the 4.5 metre cypress hedge. A second hut is a feng shui addition closer to the river, to stop positive chi from leaving the property. And the tee pee? Local school children will be treated to a production of “Peter Pan” later this year. From the main gate of this breathtakingly neat and manicured horse stud, through to the private family garden, it is obvious this former sheep and cattle property will be looked after in the spirit of its original landlords for generations to come. After lunch on board we visited the temples Luxor and Karnak where we could have wandered around both sites for two or three days. Five members of the group left us that night for a taxi ride to Hurgardah on the Red Sea coast. Apparently because some of the roads are so narrow and dangerous an armed police escorted convoy of up to 100 or more vehicles travels overnight to Hurgardah having sole use of the road. During the daylight the trip is reversed. Didn’t sound like fun to me. Next morning we flew from Luxor to Sham el Sheik on the Red Sea for two nights R and R. What a wonderful place to spend your 60th birthday. Whilst there some of us took an optional trip of a 2.00 am walk up Mt Sinai where Mosses received the 10 commandments. 78

“Tim and I had to sample many wines (it’s a tough job)”

Some say a lamb should replace the kangaroo on our Coat of Arms (I think Sam Kekovich was one). Roast it, grill it, braise it, stew it… it doesn’t matter. Now is the best time to select a good looking lamb from your favourite butcher and dish it up to friends and family. And the wine? Monichino 2007 Sangiovese. Tim and I had to sample many wines (it’s a tough job!) to find a match for this dish but the Monichino Sangiovese was top notch. The bit of spice was great with the lamb and the whiff of acid mellowed with the honeysuckle dressing.

Monichino 2007 Sangiovese

serves 4 4 lamb rumps 1tsp Szechuan pepper 2 baby cos (use inner leaves) 2 bunches asparagus 100gm cooked chickpeas (or 1 tin) 500gm green beans 2 red chilli’s 1 box cantonese rock sugar 1 large pinch dried honeysuckle flowers 2 cups rice vinegar 1 lemon Sea salt & olive oil Dressing: place rock sugar, chilli, honeysuckle flowers, rice vinegar and lemon juice in a saucepan and reduce by 1/3 over medium heat. remove from heat but do not chill. Lamb: marinade in crushed Szechuan pepper, sea salt and olive oil over night. Seal over high heat until browned all over, place on baking tray in oven and cook for 15-20 mins on 200 degrees. Allow to rest. To assemble: Briefly blanch your cos, asparagus, beans and chickpeas. drain, drizzle with dressing and place in a nice stack on your plates. Meanwhile, slice your lamb into 3 on a very sharp angle and drizzle more dressing around the plate. All done! enjoy! Recipe supplie d courtesy of Friar’s Cafe,Sh
