Welcome As another year draws to a close I am sure you are asking yourself the same question as I am asking, “Where on earth has this year gone?” It’s just as hard to believe that by the end of next year, it will be the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century... and that certainly takes some contemplating! In this, our last edition of 2009, we hope you will enjoy reading about and be inspired by the creativity, accomplishments and initiatives of the many people who feature in our stories. We have enjoyed sharing other people’s lives with you and are continually overwhelmed by the challenges they take on and their subsequent successes. We are pleased to showcase the popular and picturesque river town of Cobram-Barooga in this edition. Many of our region’s towns benefit from an influx of tourists (particularly during

summer), but in the past twelve months the global financial crisis has impacted on the tourist dollar, and has resulted in a reduction in the number of tourists visiting our part of Victoria. However, the recent and successful Shepparton Tourism Week programme certainly highlighted the diverse range of attractions and businesses in our Goulburn and Murray valleys. Homescape was pleased to support the inaugural Tourism Luncheon and wishes the regional Tourism Board every success in its endeavours to encourage more visitors to our area. Finally, our Homescape family joins me in wishing our readers a happy and safe summer and thank you for your generous and encouraging support of our magazine. Happy reading!

She grew up around country sport, watching her Dad, well known country football identity, Tony Jones and she always understood the significance of AFL legends, looking up to grandfather and Essendon Football Club legend, Jack Jones.

Tell us how you landed your “on-screen” position with Fox Footy and now with Fox Sports?

I was lucky enough to land a job with FOX Footy as a 19 year old uni student. I started as a production assistant and gradually worked my way through to becoming a reporter and then presenter. When the channel closed in 2006, I scored a job with FOX Sports which has been terrific. I absolutely love having a range of sports to cover; which being in Melbourne is mostly

What or who were your influences as an aspiring sports journalist? I’ve worked with some fantastic journalists, producers and directors who’ve always been incredibly helpful. My family has also been very supportive of my goals.

Covering an Olympic Games has been a dream, are you on track to achieve this goal? Hopefully! I worked on Channel 7’s Sydney Olympics as an 18 year old but to actually cover a games now that I’m a presenter would be fabulous.

How do you familiarising yourself with so many “unfamiliar” sports in your job? It’s obviously not all AFL and other main stream sports? Even keeping up with everything happening in the world of AFL is a challenge at times when you think of all the articles, radio time and TV shows dedicated to the game….and that’s before you even sit down to watch a match. I have folders of research leading up to big events that I cover….and try to keep as up to date with current news as I can. The internet is an amazing research tool….I don’t know how reporters survived without it. Most sporting clubs have very good websites that are great for news, profiles and details. And I never take my radio off live sports coverage or sports news.

When Paul and Anne Stack started designing their home on the shores of Lake Mulwala, they paid more attention

They bought the former red gum sawmill site 12 years ago and Paul spent the next six years working on unique design features which now grace the opulent residence. “We decided we would design rooms like our Japanese room, Egyptian room, the open plan modern kitchen/dining room and billiard room and the house would soon become a home. We have included all the elements we enjoy and it was as easy as that,” Paul said. Inspiration for the curved kitchen and adjoining spiral staircase came to Paul on “a lost weekend in Lorne walking on the beach.” “I picked up a shell that had broken open to expose its interior which was a perfect spiral shape. I thought I could do that with the kitchen and spent time designing the curves and the stair case to depict that shape. The tradesman really enjoyed working on something this different, “ Paul said.

A neutral wall colour and porcelain tile used throughout the double storey home provides a clean canvass for the eye catching artefacts brought home from overseas travel and bursts of colour in soft furnishings. Two large leopard sculptures adorn the front foyer, Egyptian statues and urns dress one of the bedrooms and the Japanese room, one of Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourites, is tastefully dressed in dark timber and frosted glass to transport you to the far off land. There is great attention to detail in all the themed rooms. The contemporary 2 pac open plan kitchen and dining is one of the most used rooms in the home as the couple entertain regularly and it is not uncommon to accommodate up to 20 family at Christmas time. Granite bench tops and a marble table top once again injects a luxurious feel with the most modern of features from refrigerators, to the oven to the coffee machine all included.

The downstairs lounge, with gas fuelled fire and black marble hearth, is a cosy place for reading – a favourite pastime of the couple. In this room it is

In contrast, the nearby sunken billiard room, is dressed with heavy timbers and dark leather furniture against the neutral floor and wall coverings. The antique roll over billiard/dining table is a family heirloom and the large bookcase was made by Paul and moved to this home. A solid red gum bar is to signify the property’s origins. Of course most rooms boast uninterrupted views over the lake and the wide verandahs are the perfect place to soak up the mild year round climate. Floor heating and refrigerated cooling are used sparingly due to the moderate climate and double glazed windows and two levels of insulation ensure year round comfort. Paul, owner of Australasian Plant Design, also works much of the year from his Mulwala home and agrees it is a pretty good place to be. On his days off he doesn’t mind cleaning the odd window or tending to the low maintenance garden as it means he can continue to enjoy his “magic” view. [hs]

The once derelict Commercial Hotel building in High Street Echuca has had

Curiously the story of the hotel’s first owner and its current occupants is also one of change and new beginnings. Niko Glentzes owns the celebrated Nik’s Tavern, which is located in the historic property. He has worked hard to become the successful restaurateur he is today. Niko left Greece at the age of nineteen to seek opportunities in Australia. ‘I put in long hours,’ Niko explains, ‘I had a hamburger shop and then a service station restaurant. Living here with her teenage daughter, owner Jo has created a little piece of paradise that is “home” for her carefully chosen pieces of furniture and much loved treasures that she has collected over many years, it is also home to her best four legged friend Charlie. Many of Jo’s stylish furniture pieces have a fascinating story as to their origin and history. There are however several favorite pieces including the unique French parisanne built out of French maple and the stunning Danish wishbone dining table chairs. “I stumbled across the house and the moment I stepped in the door I knew that this was the home I was looking for, and I purchased it within two days. I have been here now for five years, but initially I wanted us to live in the house for twelve months before I made any structural changes and I was pleased that I did.” said Jo. 28

I wanted us to feel as though we are always outside and the floor to ceiling windows certainly help to connect them. Every room has a garden aspect including the laundry, which showcases the amazing vegetable garden. Jo, who is a creative and passionate food lover says, “There is nothing more rewarding than stepping outside into the vegetable patch and picking something to contribute to your food preparation, and knowing that you grew it yourself!” There are an amazing array of fruit trees that Jo has chosen and carefully planted including quinces, olives, apples, lemons, limes and peaches and all contributing to the daily produce. “I enjoy having my family and friends here. I want them to feel comfortable and at home, and this house makes it very easy to do that”

Curiously, it is on the banks of Kialla Lakes that Homescape discovers an award winning water wise garden we can all learn from.

It was an extremely hot afternoon in November when Eileen Ross welcomed us into her yard to share some of her secrets on building a water saving garden. Exposed to the searing heat, it was immediately obvious that this frugally watered planting stood up to her gardening ethos. A view of Lake Amaroo brimming full at the bottom of the cottage style garden is in stark contrast with the way Eileen looks after her rambling patch of trees, native shrubs and pretty perennials. Her water wise ways have won her a recent award in the Goulburn Valley Water Waterwise Awards for Best Established Large Garden.

A self confessed passionate gardener, Eileen has replaced all lawn with drought tolerant and summer hardy plants and waters in sections every 10 days. “I started the garden about three and a half years ago after we moved here from Phillip Island and the first thing I did was take out all the lawn which covered most of the front and back yards. “I have done this in my other gardens over the years and built much more practical spaces for our climate and most importantly to save water. “Lawns just take up too much water and time to look after,” Eileen says convincingly. Once the lawn had disappeared, bags of gypsum were used to break down heavy clay soils and at least 20 trees were planted for overhead shade – a must in most areas in Victoria according to Eileen. A manchurian pear, a self seeding Chinese silk tree, silver birch, conifers and a tall hedge of pottostrum all provide cover for native shrubs, such as grevilleas, and the traditional cottage plants of lavender, roses, geraniums, pelargoniums and pin cushion. Mixed with echiums, pots of succulents , gazanias and ground covers like pink pig face and seaside daisy, the lush feel of the garden has not been compromised by meagre water usage. Traditionally, the silver birch is known to need lots of water, but Eileen says once established the trees have done well in her garden. Hoses were used to mark out the sweeping curved gravel paths and more than 200 blue and white agapanthus have been planted to line the walk ways. Clumps of dietes, flax and cordyline are placed cleverly for bulk at ground level and contrast with the more dainty foliage and flowers of poppies and candy tuft. 54

While Eileen admits to spending much of her time in her loved garden as her “therapy”, it is low maintenance and preferred watering time is early in the morning before the heat. “Late night watering is not really suitable as it encourages mould and fungus on many plants,” Eileen advises. “And who wants to be up all night watering the garden anyway. This way I get to enjoy what I have created, knowing I am doing my bit to save water along the way.” [hs]

People wiser than me say that everyone should meet and be inspired by at least one person in their lives, and those of us who have been fortunate to meet Isobel Harvie from Ky Valley will certainly support this assertion. Isobel and her husband Keith have been married for forty five years and have lived almost all of their married life in Ky Valley. Keith was a successful businessman in nearby Echuca and Isobel devoted her life to raising her four sons, supporting Keith and contributing to the Community. In 2005 their lives were turned upside down when Isobel was diagnosed with breast cancer and Isobel found herself being the “cared for” person rather than “caring” for someone else. Isobel was quietly determined to record the myriad of emotions that she experienced as she struggled to fight her toughest battle. And whilst she had always been an extremely competent seamstress she had not dabbled in any arts or crafts but Isobel was searching for a way to express her feelings and emotions.

Isobel found herself initially drawing then painting in a very graphic way detailing her daily emotions. These amazing works have now become a personal and symbolic record of Isobel’s journey of living with cancer and beautifully showcase Isobel’s natural creative and expressive talents. In 2006 Isobel was persuaded to hold an exhibition in Shepparton and Prominent Press published a book depicting her journey. The book titled Emotions of Cancer has been distributed to people living with cancer right across Australia and in 2008 was republished to meet the continuing requests for her publication.

Isobel realized that her exhibition and her book helped so many people and that she personally wanted to do more and share her experiences. With the support of Keith she undertook training to become a Community Liaison Advocate for BCNA (Breast Care Network Australia) a position she currently holds. “For me cancer has been the most amazing life journey, and has given me some challenging and interesting opportunities that perhaps I would not have had,” said Isobel. “I really do enjoy sharing my experiences with people and I never would have thought that I would be able to speak publicly to large groups of people.” she shyly added. Earlier this year Isobel decided that she would like to

Would you advise first home buyers to consider house and land packages when on a budget? Yes, we actually found that building worked better with our budget. Previously we had looked at preestablished houses in the same price bracket that were 20-30 years old and building meant that we got a new house for the same price. Building also meant that we saved money on stamp duty.

Prepare salad first: Shave the daikon radish. i used a specialized Japanese vegetable shredder but a standard veggie peeler gives a similar effect. Place in bowl of iced water for a good 30 mins. in a non reactive saucepan, place half the block of palm sugar, the vinegar, some sweet chilli (to taste), the fish sauce and the ginger (just smashed with your knife as you’re taking it out later). Bring to the boil, remove from heat and allow to infuse. Shred the chilli (seeds or no seeds as they are hot!) and roughly chop the coriander.

Now the fish! Coat in rice flour, a drizzle of the oil and a good pinch of the salt and pepper. heat some more of the oil in a non stick pan, brown one side of the flathead quickly and turn over, transfer to the oven and bake for about 8 mins at 190 degrees. remove from oven and allow to settle for 2 mins. all done - plate & enjoy! PS Don’t dress the salad as it will be too strong in taste. instead drizzle around the outside of the plate.
