Victorian Bushrangers cricketer

homescape: home & lifestyle magazine

Aiden Blizzard

12

After a long, hot summer of cricket, Homescape caught up with Shepparton’s Aiden Blizzard who is continuing to make a name for himself as an agressive left-handed batsman. The Australian cricketer and member of the Victorian Bushrangers developed his habit of wanting to hit the ball hard when his father bought a bowling machine. The only one in Shepparton, they set it up in the backyard for batting sessions, rocketing tennis balls at the young sportsman at 160 km/h. His trick was to get on the front foot and try to smash everything straight back at his poor dad, Craig. “I just used to love whacking the ball. He never discouraged me from doing it so it was a natural thing to do,” the 25-year-old says. He is known as Bamm-Bamm amongst his cricket peers. Do you mind the nickname, Bamm–Bamm, your team-mate Shane Harwood gave you? I was always a hyperactive child growing up so the nickname was pretty accurate for me, both on and off the field, very amusing. Was it always cricket for you or were you good at many sports and had to choose? No, I fell into cricket after having a shoulder reconstruction and wrist reconstruction within 20 months of each other. Aussie Rules (football) was my love growing up. I always wanted to be a footy player as a child; I’m a typical country kid, footy in the winter, cricket in the summer. I was lucky enough to get a contract with cricket and my body is thankful there is a no-football clause in it!

Did growing up in a provincial city like Shepparton help or hinder your chance to enter the national level of cricket? If you look at the Victorian team a few years ago, about 70 per cent of the squad was from country Victoria. I think it has definitely helped my career being able to access so many different sports growing up and having the support of the country community. Playing against grown men as a teenager really helped fast-track my career and also gives the opportunity to grow as a person. What do you consider your standout achievement in your career? Man of the Match twice in the Twenty 20 final for the Vics and being a part of three championship winning teams. What is your passion outside cricket? I love to spend time with my family. They’re a huge part of my life. I am enjoying getting involved in the family business (Blizzards Fine Jewellers) and I really love getting to the beach and trying to surf without hurting myself or any other beach goers. What makes you laugh? Seeing myself in the mirror first thing in the morning!

aboriginal artist: kevin williams homescape: home & lifestyle magazine

Kevin Williams

By Christy O’Brien

a contemporary kind of guy Kevin Williams is arguably one of Echuca’s most successful Koori artists, having etched out a 20-year career with his striking contemporary style. Kevin descends from the Southern Riverina’s Waradjuri people and is a selfprofessed non-traditional contemporary Koori artist. As a child Kevin admired the traditional art of his people, but did not discover his painting talent until his mid-twenties and has never formally trained in art. His contemporary style and unusual freehand ability to capture form and feature bring forward a point of difference when compared with the much recognised and traditional aboriginal fine art (dot style).

Many now-famous, traditional aboriginal artists emerged during the 1970s, painting depictions of the Dreamtime. Names like Rover Thomas, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Minnie Pewerle and Dorothy Napanagardi come to mind.

Top & Bottom: Kevin Williams’ Koori heritage is reflected in his remarkable non-traditional aboriginal art.

Echuca’s Murray River Gallery, owned by Geoff and Jenny Waters, demonstrates this point of difference, displaying traditional aboriginal fine art from Arnhem Land, central Australia and the West Australian Kimberley Region, in contrast to Kevin’s contemporary works. Both forms of art are exactly that – art.

Traditional aboriginal fine art is considered a business venture for many buyers and Geoff talks of the different categories of aboriginal artists; traditional fine art artists, tourist market artists, and those who paint for pleasure. aboriginal art gallery homescape: home & lifestyle magazine

Artists’ professional development coordinator, Clive Atkinson, and art liaison officer, Les Saunders, hope Gallery Kaiela inspires local aboriginal artists.

Gallery Kaiela

By Kaylee Anderson

a platform for aboriginal artists

Above: Clive Atkinson with some of the vibrant aboriginal art on display at Gallery Kaiela.

Prior to the opening of Gallery Kaiela in 2006, there were limited opportunities for aboriginal artists to exhibit and sell their works in the Shepparton area. Gallery Kaiela is hosted by the Kaiela Planning Council which was formally the Strategic Planning and Policy Unit. Clive Atkinson, the artists’ professional development coordinator from the gallery, has been encouraging local aboriginal artists to adopt imagery and the symbolism of the south-eastern Australian aboriginal style of painting. Gallery Kaiela aims to make a major contribution to the emergence of the southeastern Australian aboriginal artist’s style, which is now internationally recognised.

The style is true to the culture of this region and involves line art in contrast to the dot style from central Australia. The style was developed thousands of years ago and is recognised as the oldest living art form known to mankind. Evidence of linear paintings or x-ray art is present on rock paintings, bark paintings and artefacts on sacred aboriginal sites. Paintings and art forms displayed in the gallery prove no two artists use the same style of painting. Each artist interprets eastern Australian aboriginal styles differently. www.homescape.com.au

15

aboriginal art gallery homescape: home & lifestyle magazine

The use of “traditional” colours by the artists has now been adapted to meet the changing demands of the audience. Certain paintings exhibit unearthly shades of purple, yellows and blues. By incorporating these colours the artists illustrate that aboriginal culture is evolving and adapting to today’s times. Gallery Kaiela offers a large range of unique paintings and also specialises in didgeridoos, contemporary artefacts, ceramics and jewellery.

As the gallery is becoming more recognised around the world, local artists will be contributing to the local economy by attracting people to Shepparton through promotion of the gallery. So far, there are about 45-50 artists who have exhibited and sold their work internationally in countries including France, Spain, Sweden, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

The gallery promotes local aboriginal culture, identity and heritage which is better understood, respected and celebrated by the mainstream community. In the long term this will allow the aboriginal community to have a stronger sense of social connectedness internally and with the wider community.

This article was written by Kaylee Anderson who recently graduated from Wollongong University. She is now a project officer at The University of Melbourne’s School of Rural Health in Shepparton. The School of Rural Health regularly exhibits works from the gallery and works closely with Clive Atkinson and Les Saunders.

The gallery is located at 170 Corio St, Shepparton. open five days a week from 10am - 4pm. Phone 5821 1433

Classic Beauty By Debbie Mori

restored

Eye-catching renovations to an elegant heritage-listed house in north-central Shepparton have stayed true to the era in which the home was built while incorporating many modern features.

Top: The heritage-listed home sits prettily in the attractive garden. Above: The four-month renovation has been well worth it with the home returned to its former glory.

Owners Jock and Maureen O’Connor engaged Shepparton’s Bruce Mactier Building Designers to draw up plans to renovate and extend their three-bedroom rendered home, which was built in 1937. The O’Connors have added 13 squares incorporating a stylish kitchen, spacious living and dining area, Mediterraneanstyle alfresco terrace and new garage. They have also changed the layout of some rooms with practicality and efficient use of space in mind. The result is a stunning transformation which has brought the 35 square home into the modern era, yet allows the owners and visitors to experience the atmosphere of its glory days. New polished timber floorboards, original decorative window pelmets and intricate plaster features, quaint French doors

and high ceilings combine to create a charming allure throughout the home, while the O’Connors’ subtle use of colour is nothing short of exquisite. The original rendered interior walls are painted in an attractive neutral shade called Stone Lion with white trim on the ceilings, picture rails, window pelmets, door jambs and tall skirting boards. White lace curtains complete the picture in the bedrooms and front lounge, with antiquestyle furnishings the perfect complement to the character of this classic home. The interior of the rear extension is painted Antique White to match the new kitchen which was built by Tatura’s G & L Lifestyle Kitchens. National Tiles in Shepparton supplied the tiles for the splashback and updated wet areas of the home. The open-plan design of the extension

incorporates the kitchen, dining and living areas, which overlook the inviting alfresco terrace and manicured backyard. Large glass doors open onto the spacious tiled terrace, where a leadlight window made by Jock draws the eye to the rendered feature wall.

The extension at the rear of the house incorporates the kitchen, dining and living areas.

Regency White has been used on the exterior of the home, while the imposing steel columns in the alfresco area are painted in Ironstone to match the new charcoal-coloured tiles on the roof. corrugated iron sheets have been removed and replaced with horizontally attached Colorbond panels. You’d never guess it was Jock’s shed until you stepped inside! The exposed-aggregate concrete driveway and paths blend flawlessly with the exterior wall colour, while the freshly-painted original timber windows are a delightful reminder of the home’s heritage.

The classy front fence is a larger-scale version of the original design and, with the newly-planted garden as a backdrop, completes the picture-perfect street view. It took four months for Shepparton’s Simpson and Rickard Builders and other tradesmen to complete the extensive renovation, which involved changing the layout of existing rooms, demolishing the back part of the house, and adding new rooms and storage areas to create a seamless transformation.

Above: Modern and fresh, the new kitchen has polished floorboards. Right: The O’Connors have added their personal touch to the home.

The O’Connors, now retired, moved in 15 months ago after living in Orr St for 21 years. Every time they open their classic front door with leadlight features they’re reminded of their former home because they brought the door with them! [hs]

Marshan Finishing

…What a Blast!

“Home renovator’s dream” is wHat comes to mind wHen talking to mark Hilet and sHannon arcHer from marsHan finisHing & Blasting. These guys can save you big bucks on a kitchen or bathroom make-over and can give you a “finish” that appears more expensive than it actually costs. There are no limits to what this spraypainting duo can finish; from fridges, outdoor barbecue areas, entire bathrooms and kitchens, to old timber furniture, antique baths and the coolest custom-made splashbacks around. Marshan (as in Mark and Shannon) Finishing and Blasting was born during a lunch break at Byford Equipment, Moama, when the boys came up with a concept to maximise the potential of custom polyurethane (2Pac) spray painting as opposed to the traditional brush method. With 35 years’ experience in automotive and marine spray painting, Marshan Finishing and Blasting offers a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the best finish for the job, using the strength of 2Pac paint in no less than 40,000 colours. The team prefers to use soda blasting and glass bead blasting as opposed to the structural limitations of traditional heat and sand blasting. Soda blasting allows for that original look, where old furniture can be made to look antique once more.

Ross, Shannon, Mark and Alwyn from Marshan Finishing & Blasting can give your home a make-over that’s out of this world.

Kitchen appliances can also be finished to match any desired colour code and splashbacks can be custom designed to include personalised graphics. AFTER

“Up until now splashbacks have been a one-dimensional colour …we can combine colours, and use any writing, any design,” Mark says. Ross, the main man when it comes to blasting and first-year industrial finishing trainee, Alwyn, make up the rest of the team at Marshan. Marshan’s finished product is very visual and deserves a closer look at its Moama Industrial Estate headquarters. The team’s work is also on display at Solz Shoes, Hare St, Echuca, and online at www.marshanfinishing.com.au.

“We’re mostly farm girls and we all get away from day-to-day worries to talk, learn and express our creativity.”

Metal Marvels

By Rhonda Sutton

Joining a TAFE course has taken some rural women on a journey no one could have predicted. The classes have served as a lifeline for those involved and transformed Julie Guinan’s life. Top: There’s a delightful surprise at every turn in Julie Guinan’s amazing garden. Bottom: Kai Shiels, 3, thinks his grandma Julie is very clever.

“Once I got over the bangs and sparks in learning to weld, I never looked back,” Julie Guinan says. “Initially some of the women were a little daunted. Like me, once they became confident there was no stopping them.” The women had enrolled in a Welding for Women class at Deniliquin TAFE – designed as a short course. Six years later the classes continue, with unexpected results. “It’s been our salvation,” Julie explains. “We’re mostly farm girls and we all get away from day-to-day worries to talk,

learn and express our creativity.” Some of the women have found an extra income stream during the drought. Julie began by making sculptures for her Mathoura property. “I’ve always loved my garden. I created it from bare earth and enjoy finding bits and pieces to put in it. But there are only so many stone statues you can use!” she says. “The oxy and gases made us nervous and at first the guys laughed at us a bit. Welding can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. We get a lot of burns.”

garden feature homescape: home & lifestyle magazine

Julie Guinan’s creative talents are obvious in her welded metal sculptures.

Most of the women have welding equipment on their farms and have saved costs by repairing farm equipment and constructing sheds, silos and loading ramps. One built a bridge over a channel to her chook yard. Many, like Julie, have been doing the classes since their inception. Some have started more recently. The women have continued to surprise their teachers and others with their skills. They complete the same competencies as an apprentice. Julie’s husband, Peter, has always been supportive, assisting with ground works and proudly showing people around the garden. The couple opens the garden, called The Springs, to community groups to raise money for Deniliquin hospital. Julie is inspired by nature and enjoys making a variety of sculptures. “With the drought we lost a lot of plants. It’s been frustrating. Luckily the sculptures add another dimension to the garden.”

pacdon pork homescape: home & lifestyle magazine

A hankering for traditional British pork products has evolved into a thriving business in Bunnaloo. RIght: The popular pork pies are produced on the pig farm. At 18 James Arrowsmith was robbed whilst backpacking in Taiwan during a gap year. He arrived in Australia flat broke so went to stay with his godfather, Anthony Hawarth, at his pig farm in Bunnaloo, north of Echuca. James intended to stay for a fortnight but remained there six months. “I fell in love with farming,” he explains. “I think it was in my blood. My father was a dairy farmer before I was born.” James returned to England to complete a business studies degree but came back to Bunnaloo each British summer to work the Australian winter at Anthony’s farm. “I had no tan for years,” James quips.

Life’s a

When James completed his degree he asked his best mate, Pete Tonge, to travel with him to Australia. Pete is a trained chef who had always wanted to visit here. After travelling for a while the two started hankering for traditional British foods, in particular pork products. “Pork pies can be found in every shop in Britain but good quality ones are difficult to find in Australia. Stats showed there are a lot of British immigrants and their families here,” James says. “My godfather wasn’t selling enough pigs. Peter was a chef. We decided to produce pork products at Bunnaloo.”

PiEce of Pie By Rhonda Sutton

Serendipity led Englishman James Arrowsmith from Liverpool to the small TOWN of Bunnaloo. Homescape’s Rhonda Sutton tells his story.

“It was a marriage made in heaven,” Pete explains. “We wrote a business plan and sent it to family and friends. Various people funded us.” The pair refurbished a derelict dairy at the Bunnaloo farm. Another lucky coincidence was that Pete had experience converting English barns into homes, so he had gained useful engineering and construction skills. He also put these skills to use by making the pork pie machine – another cost saving. “We worked for six

“We source all our ingredients locally. The pork comes from the farm. We don’t buy lard but render it down here. The herbs and honey are also from Bunnaloo. Everything is sold within a week of being made,” James explains. “We love the community spirit here. It’s probably like rural England was like 20 years ago. Echuca Moama has been very supportive of us, especially the Murray Shire.” Since being featured in Epicure in The Age, business has grown considerably. “Half of our output is sold locally and the rest to Victoria and, increasingly, the rest of Australia. We supply our products to Circa the Prince, voted in the top 40 restaurants in Australia. Head chef Matt Wilkinson says the black pudding is the best he’s tasted in this country. Richard Cornish, director of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival is

a huge fan of our sausages. We provided haggis for the Meeting of the Clans dinner at the Celtic Festival in Moama. We also provide suckling pigs for spit roasts,” James says. “Orders can be made on our website and we do a lot of driving, delivering products and travelling to farmers’ markets.” It’s surreal to visit the shed in a paddock in Bunnaloo and find it buzzing with people and activity. Backpackers provide much of the labour. “They know the product and are excellent workers,” James says. James and Pete are passionate about their business. “It’s great to be working for yourself,” Pete says. “It was never planned. It just came together. I guess we were in the right place at the right time.” [hs]

PURDEYS INTRODUCES

Now Purdeys is taking its service and expertise to a new level with the introduction of a LaserStar workstation – one of very few in Australia. This world-class American machine uses a variable microscopic laser beam to fuse precious metals, like platinum and gold, quickly and precisely. Purdeys director and owner/manager Michael Kearney is excited about the introduction of this new-age technology. “For hundreds of years the jewellery trade, the world over, relied mainly upon a gas flame to fuse precious metals. Today, with this new technology, we can adjust the laser beam from one tenth of a millimetre out to two millimetres and create joins that are unbelievably strong,” Michael says. “Laser is very exact and very clean and is excellent for restoration work on delicate antique jewellery and jewellery set with heat-sensitive stones.” Purdeys is a family business boasting three generations of professional jewellery skills and experience. This has generated a clientele base of customers from near and far who appreciate fine-quality jewellery and professional expertise. Purdeys has also established a strong customer base in Melbourne over many years – a very competitive market, starved of the level of personal service Purdeys provides.

The Three Generations of Purdeys from Left to Right: Michael & Jo Kearney, Mary Purdey, Pam & Stewart Lynas. “Because our industry is a world market it is necessary to present quality items at competitive values. For these reasons we have, for many years, sourced diamonds directly from the world’s cutting centres and maintained a partnership with associates who own and operate a diamond mine in South Africa,” Michael says. Purdeys also takes great pride in being one of few jewellers in Australia appointed as a stockist of certified Australian white Argyle and coloured diamonds. Purdeys is an active partner in the Diamonds of Australia program. Purdeys knows the importance of continuing to invest in leading-edge jewellery manufacturing technology in order to deliver precision and perfection.

With five million households in Australia, that equates to up to $500 million a year of wasted electricity and five million tonnes of one of the greenhouse gases – carbon dioxide. consumption really is as simple as turning things off at the power point. “With special devices, the average home can expect to save around $100 a year. Secondly, if the building is struck by a storm, then your electrical items with power connected will not be vulnerable to damage,” Will says. Here is a simple way of testing how much energy your appliances use along with a simple power-saving device Will recommends.

Power-Mate Lite – Power Meter This handy gadget can tell you exactly how much power your appliances use when turned on and when in stand-by mode. It’s perfect for helping you choose which models to purchase. For example, when buying a television, it’s not only the purchase price to consider; in the long term the stand-by power can effectively double the actual cost. Shepparton’s Daniel Rossignoli admits cycling more than 2000 gruelling kilometres has been the biggest challenge of his life, but it was pain with a purpose. Daniel was on a mission to raise awareness and cash for cancer research inspired by the passing of his grandfather, Dante Rossignoli, to the disease some years ago.

The 20-year-old cycling enthusiast embarked on the Ride for Cancer with a team of 12 which left Federation Square in Melbourne late last year on the punishing 13-day, 2317 km course culminating in a very emotional finish at Uluru in central Australia. He helped raise $60,000 for the cause. Daniel, who admits to loving a challenge, was one of the youngest in the group and was one of the 10 cyclists to finish the adventure.

“If you are going to put yourself through a test like that it needs to have a purpose behind it and I felt the Ride for Cancer would both challenge me but also be doing some good for a worthy cause,” Daniel says.

Daniel’s physical and mental stamina were put to the test over the demanding course. He cycled up to 600 km a week to prepare for the ride but sore knees threatened to end his participation on day five. A visit to a physiotherapist in Adelaide had him back on the bike and dreaming of the finish line, only eight days away, averaging 180 km a day. “It was such a big thing to get across the line. The feeling of personal achievement was overwhelming; it was a very emotional finish. Much more than I expected but I would do it again in a flash,” Daniel insists. Amazingly, the university student is already talking about his next ride from the northern most point of Australia at Cape York to the southern most point at Wilson’s Promontory – a body-numbing 4500 km. Good luck Daniel.

The name Mooroopna was used by the original Kaieltheban tribe living in the area and means “deep water hole”, referring to a very deep part of the Goulburn River behind the old Mooroopna Hall. Today, Mooroopna is better known as the home of its famous son, motorcycle racer Jack Findlay, the much loved “Mighty Cats” Australian Rules football team and the profitable community fundraiser, Fruit Salad Day.

www.homescape.com.au

A bronze statue of Jack, a three times 500cc GP winner and FIM Formula 750 champion, stands proudly in the main street, the same street used as the venue for the annual Fruit Salad Day, which sees local fruit and vegetable growers donate large bins full of fresh produce to sell for charity. Like most country towns, Mooroopna is mad on its football, with residents turning out on weekends to support their beloved Cats, competing in the Goulburn

Valley Football League. The club’s playing history is not without incident and while many will argue the Cats could have won many more premierships, the club boasts 11 in the GVFL, a tally bettered only by arch rival, Shepparton. The last flag was in 1986 – part of backto-back premiership wins in 1985-86 under the inspirational coaching of former Fitzroy player Chris Smith.

Maybe the footy team, under coach brad Campbell, will take some inspiration from the town’s new image and logo, “Make it Mooroopna”. The community-adopted slogan signifies a renewed energy and proactive attitude towards building a prosperous future.

while looking to Mooroopna’s future is important, there are many in the community who believe its past is just as important. The Historical Society of Mooroopna was formed in 1983 and its small band of dedicated volunteers has worked tirelessly to collect, preserve and display memorabilia significant to the district’s history. Today the former Grutzner House in Park St has been transformed into a museum providing an amazing trip back in time. The museum is devoted to local history displayed in themed rooms depicting football, horse racing, the fire brigade, industry such as the flour mill, hobbies and clothing.

Historical Society committee member and passionate history collector, Val Hill, explains, “This TV was the first to be brought to Mooroopna and the family used to take it out into the street for the neighbourhood to look at.”

My older brother had completed the same traineeship at St Brendan’s two years prior, so I had a rough idea of what was expected of me.

Looking back over 2009, I can say with confidence that I had a fantastic year. Although completing year 12 at Notre Dame College in Shepparton had its tough times, there were far more positives to take from it. Swimming sports, the athletics carnival, school fundraisers, growing relationships with teachers and colleagues, home group and numerous lunchtimes spent with friends were just a few contributing factors to an enjoyable year. But after 10 months full of SACs, tests and studying for exams I decided that I didn’t want to go to university the following year, I wanted a break from having my head in the books – a gap year. In December 2009, I began my job search by firstly putting together a résumé. After dropping it off at various organisations,

www.homescape.com.au

I received a phone call from St Brendan’s Primary School, Shepparton, advising me that I had an interview for a gap year traineeship. Nervous, anxious, excited and hopeful were just a few ways to describe how I was feeling on the day of my interview. Later that same day, the deputy principal rang to inform me that I had interviewed well and was being offered the job. Without hesitating I accepted the position as a 2010 AFL trainee, deferring my offer to study journalism at La Trobe University in Bundoora.

To make things even easier, I discovered that a good school and family friend of mine would be completing the same traineeship at St Brendan’s, which is a convenient two-minute walk from my house (especially since I didn’t have my licence!) Off I went on the first day, looking forward to starting my new job. It was surprising to see so many familiar staff members from when I attended school at the very same place six years earlier. I must say it was very different to be now working alongside them! I quickly got back into the routine of waking up early and learnt the swing of things at St Brendan’s. Working with several senior students, organising camps, attending zone sports and auditing sports equipment are just some of the tasks that myself and the other trainee handle, along with several assessments from the AFL Sportsready Institution. So far – so good!

CINEMATIC HOME

ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE DISCERNING Enjoy the ultimate cinematic viewing experience from the comfort of your home with the world’s first cinema-proportioned LCD display, the Philips Cinema 21:9. The flagship product displays films in the 21:9 aspect ratio – exactly as the director intended – on its 56” Full-HD screen. Cinema 21:9 is the world’s first LCD display to re-create a true-to-life cinema picture experience in the home. Traditional LCD displays compromise the way you watch a film at home, by changing the aspect ratio to fill the screen – losing the full scope of the original shot – or by inserting distracting black bars (letterboxing) at the top and bottom of the screen. Cinema 21:9 overcomes these issues and perfectly displays 2.39:1 movie material, to give you an immersive experience from the comfort of your lounge. Cinema 21:9 is the first ever LCD display shaped in the 21:9 cinema aspect ratio. It combines superb picture quality, courtesy of Philips’ powerful Perfect Pixel HD processing engine, with immersive three-sided Ambilight Spectra technology. Ambilight projects ambient LED lighting from the top and sides of the panel, absorbing you into the picture and expanding the content beyond the

confines of the screen. The colour and intensity accurately change to match the on-screen action and lock your vision on the screen, immersing you further into the movie. Completing the picture package, the breakthrough product is equipped with a Full HD 2560x1080p screen with 8.3 million pixels, which guarantees crystal-clear and razor-sharp images

screen action is realistically life-like and smoothly rendered, thanks to 200Hz Clear LCD. In addition, Perfect Contrast helps boost contrast levels to deliver an 80,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Picture quality is further enhanced by Perfect Natural Motion that ensures moving objects glide naturally on screen, eliminating the judder associated with other LCD screens. Consumers with multiple HDMI devices will appreciate the versatile connectivity options of Cinema 21:9, which sports five HDMI 1.3a ports, DLNA and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Cruisin’ Alaskan style By Jock O’Connor

In this fourth instalment of Jock and Maureen O’Connor’s travel diary, the Shepparton couple takes in the rugged beauty of Alaska during a seven-night cruise aboard the Veendam. After 12 big days on the road in Canada it was very relaxing to finally get on our Alaskan cruise. It was amazing to think, although we were still in the Canadian city of Vancouver, once we crossed the customs line at the wharf we were actually on United States soil (similar to overseas embassies) – a piece of the USA in Canada!

At our first port of call, Ketchikan, we took an optional trip to see the bears feeding in the river at Neets Bay. The short lightplane ride was a great experience but unfortunately it must have been the bears’ RDO. We only saw one bear half a mile away on the bay mudflats. That’s the luck of the draw. Unfortunately bears don’t operate on a tourist’s timetable!

We sailed on the Veendam. One of the officers said that Canadian cruising was for the “newly wed, nearly dead and the over fed”! The cruise itself was absolutely fantastic. We were spoiled with kindness – the cabin, entertainment, not to mention the spectacular scenery along the way, plus the food which we could eat as much or as little of as we wanted. Just imagine, you unpack once, relax for a week and enjoy being treated like kings and queens.

We also went ashore at Skagway where we took a steam-train ride through the rugged mountainside over cantilever bridges and through tunnels to the summit at White Pass, some 868 metres above sea level. Through these parts of Alaska they only see the sun 20 per cent of the year and receive an average of 412 cm of rain (I think they got 10 per cent on the three days we were ashore!). As wet as it was, it was well worth the visit.

www.homescape.com.au

The highlight of the cruise was definitely the scenery, especially in Glacier Bay and the College Fjord. At the glaciers the ship came to a halt. With engines cut there was hardly a sound and you felt you could actually reach out and touch the ice. The ship slowly did a 360 degree turn so everyone got a good look and the opportunity to take some fantastic photos. If you are lucky you might see a carving which is when the ice breaks away in large chunks and crashes into the water. It’s amazing to look up above the glaciers and be told that on top of the mountains 36 metres of snow forms each winter to help build them. After seeing the glaciers we were caught in the College Fjord National Park sheltering from the tail end of an Asian hurricane, but once this was over the cruise continued on its way. On board we visited the first-class floor shows and, as usual, lost money at the casino before leaving the cruise at Seward – the completion of a fantastic week. *In the next edition of Homescape read about our travels on the bubble train through the Denali National Park and our visit to Santa’s house! Scott Pitts, master chef at Ceres Restaurant in Echuca, has been cooking up a Storm for 18 years.

Ceres Restaurant

the man

By Christy O’Brien

behind the chef Scott Pitts began his career at William Angliss College in Melbourne and has worked at many top-class restaurants, including four years at Echuca’s Oscar W’s. His favourite cooking style is Italian and the signature dish at Ceres is the twice cooked duck. This dish is so popular that Ceres’ clientele will not allow it to be taken off the menu!

What ingredients do you find most challenging to cook with? I don’t find any one thing too big a challenge – challenging ingredients are part of the joy of cooking!

Homescape caught up with Scott to find out a bit more about the man behind the chef!

What ingredients can you not live without? Garlic, olive oil, tomatoes and seasoning, salt and pepper, soy sauce, fish sauce and fresh lime juice.

What do you like to eat for breakfast? I only eat breakfast on a Sunday and for this I love a traditional big breakfast: black pudding, bacon, eggs, spinach and mushrooms with sourdough toast. What food(s) do you most like to cook? All Italian and Mediterranean in origin. I especially like slow cooking using secondary cuts. I love to work with the freshest of ingredients and treat them simply.

Who do you most like to cook for? who do you most dislike cooking for and why? I enjoy cooking for family and friends the most. I most dislike cooking for people with closed minds to trying something before deciding they don’t like it!

Top left: Ceres signature dish, the twice cooked duck. Above: Scott Pitts spoke with Homescape about his passion with food.

If you could invite 10 people to dinner, who would they be & why? My closest friends and family, because they will clean up for me! [hs]
