Experience living history in a place forgotten by time, where stories from our past are whispered across the valleys and mountains, and captured in immaculately preserved streetscapes.

ou can hear the echoes of history when you visit our collection of historic buildings, all of which played a key role in commerce, trade, government, administration and law. Visit the Beechworth Historic Courthouse, Telegraph Station, Sub Treasury, Forestry Museum and the Robert O’Hara Burke Museum. These buildings were all constructed in

the1850’s from local honey coloured granite. Together they provide a fine reflection of a prosperous era. They also harbour the secrets of the Ned Kelly story – at every turn of the streets, there is a link to the Kelly family, the gang and the events that led to Ned Kelly’s trial – right here in Beechworth. At the back of the town hall you can stand in the cell that housed Ned’s mentor Harry Power.

Chapter 1: THE HISTORY

Rich Cultural Heritage The Beechworth story begins long before the discovery of gold. It begins with the Ya-itma-thang people, the dominant Aboriginal clan who occupied the Beechworth area, and who tended and nurtured the soil throughout the changing seasons. It’s our rich and porous soil that is the secret behind our fresh regional produce, our natural beauty and magnificent bird and wildlife. Today, Beechworth stands as testimony to a vibrant town, enriched by the contributions of people from many different cultures. The lure of gold penetrated far and wide attracting diggers across the world. Amongst these were the Chinese miners, who came to the Ovens Goldfields in the 1850’s. At its peak, over 5,000 Chinese hopefuls lived in the area. The Chinese quickly formed their own community and ‘Chinatown’ was established. It had its own market garden, shops, joss-house and temple. Built in 1883-1884, the Chinese Burning Towers still stand at the historic Beechworth Cemetery. These were

used for ceremonial purposes such as burning paper prayers. Meals for the dead were often left on the altar, near the burning towers. If you’d like to learn more about our Chinese heritage visit the Burke Museum and where you can see the Chinese Community Collection, including banners and ceremonial weapons. Our diverse heritage is also celebrated at the annual Beechworth Celtic Festival.

Gold Fever!

“The tents glance out of the woods on all sides...there is a long stretch up the centre of the valley, where all the ground has been turned up...”

In time, tents gradually gave way to more permanent structures. Order was once again restored. In 1853, the government responded to a request made by local store keepers to lay out the township. This task was carried out by George D. Smythe, the Government Surveyor who named the town Beechworth.

In February 1852 local shepherd, Howell, with California ‘49ers Baker and Strickland, first discovered gold in what later became Beechworth at Cadman’s Point 100 metres upstream from the Newtown Falls. Within a year 8000 miners had swarmed to the area.

Beechworth soon became the central town of the Ovens Goldfields, and the administrative centre for North East Victoria. This was a period of rapid development for Beechworth and the population swelled to an impressive 30,000 on the Ovens Goldfields.

By January 1854, well over 100,000 ounces of gold had been taken out of the diggings around the Ovens District and Spring Creek.

During this time numerous public buildings were erected to support its eminent status. Now known as the Historic and Cultural Precinct, these superb buildings are now registered by Heritage Victoria, The National Estate and the National Trust.

The following paragraph was written at that time and today it serves to provide an atmospheric account of the early discovery of gold.

Indigo Gold Trail The gold fever that gripped Victoria from the 1850s until the early decades of the 20th century left an indelible mark on Beechworth and its sister towns of Chiltern, Rutherglen and Yackandandah, and the villages and countryside in between. Everywhere, the legacy of the Gold Rush is clear – from the perfectly preserved streetscapes to mine shafts and mullock heaps to astonishing water races carved through solid rock; from Chinese Burning Towers and pioneer graves to historic government buildings, schools and museums. The Indigo Gold Trail has been developed to tie together the gold history of our area and offer visitors an easy and entertaining

way to take a self-guided journey of gold discovery while exploring our picturesque towns and countryside. Ask about the Indigo Gold Trail when you call in to our Visitor Information Centres across Indigo Shire.

Guided Town Walks

Many walks are also self-guided. Allow about 90 minutes to complete the ‘Follow the Pioneers Walk’ and then experience the Historic and Cultural Precinct and Town Hall audio visual. Drop into the Visitor Information Centre for more details and to book your tickets. Group bookings are welcome and there are many educational activities created to support school adventures.

Natural Attractions

May Day Hills gardens

Beechworth is surrounded by spectacular natural beauty: Beechworth Historic Park, Stanley State Forest and Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park. The tranquillity of eucalyptus and native cypress forests, winding creeks, steep gullies and rugged granite outcrops provide an exciting opportunity to explore natural and historical attractions close to the town.

These fine gardens are just what the doctor ordered! The gardens were started in the mid 19th century and many of the trees are now heritage listed. The gardens surround the buildings of Mayday Hills Mental Hospital (formerly the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum) one of Victoria’s major country asylums. The gardens were developed over the past century and today there are over 11 hectares of magnificent indigenous and exotic flora with spectacular vistas for you to stroll through.

Enjoy some exciting drives, gentle bike and walking tracks, all of which criss-cross the Gorge area on the northern side of the town. The walks connect fascinating historic sites that tell the story of the search for gold: the Powder Magazine, the Spring Creek Cascades, The Precipice, Reids Creek Goldfields, Woolshed Falls, Ingrams Rock and Fiddes Granite Quarry.

Stanley township A short and picturesque 10 minute drive into the hills from Beechworth is Stanley, once a bustling goldmining town during the 1850’s. The town had a number of hotels, a bakery, general store, boot maker, carpenter, butcher, saw mill, brewery and inn.

GORGE SCENIC DRIVE (MAP 1: I3) This five km drive encompassing part of the Historic Beechworth Park Drive is also a popular walking and cycling track. Points of interest are listed on a map available from the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre. Start your drive on Sydney Road at the Golden Horseshoes Monument or at the Powder Magazine. Historic Cemetery Tour (MAP 1: L2) The tour follows a marked route around the cemetery. Pick up a brochure at the front gates and follow the arrows which will lead you to each historic grave.

Today, Stanley has a general store and the original pub which stands on the original site of the old Star Hotel. In season, there is a delicious array of local produce: apples, nuts and berries for purchase. Close to Stanley township is Mt Stanley, with spectacular views of the Victorian Alps and surrounding forest.

Gorge Scenic Drive Expect to enjoy some breathtaking scenes as you drive around the northern and western outskirts of Beechworth through rocky mountain terrain. This drive takes in several lookouts along the way with spectacular views of granite valleys, waterfalls and the remains of mining activity. There is a magnificent sweeping view west to the hills that contain the lookout used by Ned Kelly and his Gang.

North East Victoria is rich in natural resources. There are several impressive displays of granite along this drive: the Granite Tors, where the granite has been weathered into strange and unusual shapes and Fiddes Quarry where you can easily imagine the quarry-men still at work. Newtown Bridge, built in 1875, provides a fine example of granite structure and Scottish stonemasonry. Just 100 metres upstream is the site of the first gold discovery in Beechworth. Other interesting walks and places to visit nearby are Woolshed Falls, the Eldorado Reserve, Mt Pilot Lookout, the Yeddonba Aboriginal rock art site at Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park and Warby Range State Park.

Our carefully preserved gardens, peaceful historic cemetery, lakeside walks, historic rail trail and mountain bike tracks provide an ideal outdoor experience. Pack a picnic, enjoy a BBQ or sit back and unwind as you experience the diversity of North East Victoria.

Lake Sambell A legacy of the Gold Rush, Lake Sambell is now a parkland, leafy retreat, bird haven and fantastic family playground just five minutes from the centre of Beechworth. It offers extensive walking trails, shady picnic areas and a canoelaunching place. It’s also an angler’s paradise, stocked annually with golden perch and twice yearly with rainbow trout. Redfin can also be caught here. The Lake Sambell reserve area is also home to the Chinese Gardens, developed in recognition of Beechworth’s Chinese heritage. Designed along Feng Shui

principles, the Chinese Gardens feature a series of ponds, extensive plantings and peaceful places for contemplation.

Lake Sambell to Lake Kerferd This 5km walk starts from the bridge over Spring Creek on Peach Drive, near Lake Sambell. It meanders past old mining sites following Spring Creek and Hurdle Creek to Lake Kerferd. Built to establish a water supply for mining, the lake is another great fishing spot, stocked with trout, redfin and golden perch. Make sure you keep to walking tracks as many of the mine shafts are deep and potentially dangerous.

Beechworth Gaol Unlocked Step inside the imposing stone walls of the historic Beechworth Gaol and experience an entertaining and informative 60 minute guided tour. Built between 1857-1864, the Gaol was used as a place of incarceration for almost150 years with Ned Kelly and his mother Ellen among the famous and notorious inmates during its long history. The Ghost Tours delve into the real-life stories as well as the tall tales of the people who lived and worked at one of Victoria’s major country asylums. Chapter Three: THings to do

Cycle the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail Beechworth is a paradise for cyclists and offers a host of tracks to suit all ages and levels of fitness. One of the most popular cycling tracks is the 15 km Everton to Beechworth leg of the famous Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail. The ride is a challenging 90 minute climb to Beechworth or an exhilirating downhill run, but definitely worth the effort either way. From Everton Station riders should set off in an easterly direction towards Boundary Road. You will

come to a fork in the road. The path to the left will take you to Beechworth while the path to the right will take you to the Everton township and then on to Myrtleford and Bright. Once you cross Boundary Road you will then ride for approximately 2.5kms before you reach Diffey Road. Diffey Road to the south heads back to the Everton township while off to the east heads towards Beechworth. Diffey Road crosses over the Rail Trail in three different locations as it makes its way to Beechworth.

From this point the trail continues travelling in an uphill direction. This section of the ride gives cyclists a wonderful opportunity to take in the mix of native bush land, farms and wineries. The steep embankments and cuttings are a constant reminder of the hard work and engineering know-how that went into establishing the original railway line through this rugged country all those years ago. Five kilometres shy of Beechworth youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll reach the site of the former Baarmutha Station. From here the trail plateaus for a while, giving

• Please ensure you have enough water for the entire journey. • Take extreme care when crossing the Great Alpine Rd. • If possible carry other road maps of the region to use in case of an emergency.

cyclists a welcome opportunity to rest their tired legs after the steep uphill climb. You will then cross over Stilley’s Road, Fighting Gully Road and Bartsh’s Road in quick succession. Then it is an uphill ride to Pennyweight Winery where you will enjoy a well-deserved view of Beechworth. At this point the hard work comes to an end as you can literally roll into town without any effort. When you reach Beechworth Station you will be very close to the scenic Lake Sambell and only a few streets away from the centre of town.

Mountain Biking Beechworth is an outstanding destination for mountain bikers with tracks to suit all levels and abilities. Suitable for beginners yet with some challenges for the more experienced, the 6km Flame Trees Trail is a new, purpose built single track following the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. It complements the already impressive offerings at the Beechworth Mountain Bike Park located at the corner of Alma and Greenwattle Roads, not far from the centre of town. To get to

the trailhead, take High Street until you reach a fork in the road. Take Havelock Road and the Alma Road turnoff is about 100 metres along. The Park has something for all levels and includes a cross country single track, a jumps course, short course downhill and an easy cross country circuit for novices of all ages. you can stand in the dock where Ned Kelly stood for his Committal Hearing in August 1880. Even the historic public houses hold their own mystery. After a day spent on the inhospitable digging fields these establishments would provide warmth and comfort, a hearty meal and a refreshing ale to our miners. At one time there were over 61 such establishments on the local gold-fields. Today, there remains an impressive collection of fully licensed hotels, all with their original façades intact. However, Beechworth’s history is also firmly planted with the pursuit of culture and learning. Many of its townspeople were noteworthy politicians and businessmen, all of whom contributed to make Beechworth this fascinating blend of culture and history. GEORGE BRISCOE KERFERD was sent out to Australia as a young man by his father to set up a branch of the family business. He arrived on the ship Albatross, April 1853. As he stood on the wharf as a young man of 22 years, and gazed out at the bustling scene of Melbourne, little did he know that he would one day be the first Mayor of the Borough of Beechworth 1863-1864 where he settled. He was a local brewer, became a Member of the Legislative Assembly and Judge of the Supreme Court and as Premier of Victoria would achieve his aim to bring the railway to Beechworth. JAMES INGRAM arrived in Beechworth in 1855 from Scotland. He initially set up home in a tent on Ford Street. He went on to establish the local newsagency, which is still used today and where his name can still be seen above the shop. James Ingram is best remembered for his impressive community involvement and his contribution to education and health services in Beechworth.

ROBERT O’HARA BURKE, of Burke and Wills, the first European explorers to cross Australia from south to north, lived in Beechworth and served as superintendent of police between 1854 and 1858. Burke was presented with a set of pistols in appreciation of his local service. One of the pistols was found next to his body after the ill-fated Burke and Wills trek to the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1861. It was inscribed ‘Presented to Captain Burke by the residents of Beechworth, Victoria’. The Burke Museum in Beechworth is one of his legacies. ‘The But But Tree’ on Tanswell Street is over 400 years old. It’s been part of the Beechworth community for over a century. Originally, it was the site of the first miners’ church service, later used by blacksmiths as a canopy to shield the sun, and even became the unofficial post office where messages for missing persons were nailed onto its branches.

In 1863 the Museum was added to the Beechworth Athenaeum and Public Library building in honour of Robert O’Hara Burke the explorer. Burke had served as superintendent of Police at Beechworth from 1854 to 1858. Discover the early collections of the Museum, including Aboriginal artefacts from southeastern Australia purchased in 1868 and an unusual natural history collection of the 1860’s.

Fine Wine Beechworth’s climate and ancient, weathered soils also offer perfect conditions for wine growers with some internationally renowned artisan vintages produced at vineyards in the area. Grapes have been grown here since the gold rush when the first vines

were planted. Small-scale vineyards flourished throughout the region and by 1865 nearly 90 acres of gardens and small farms in the Beechworth district were under cultivation. Today some two dozen vineyards are dotted around the ridge tops and hillsides around the town, producing concentrated, intensely flavoured and highly individual wines. Visitors can sample the superb wines of the Beechworth region at a small number of Cellar Doors close to town where you can meet the makers and soak up the beautiful views.
