Fairley Leadership Yearbook 2013

2013YEARBOOK

VISION Our vision is to develop leaders to be catalysts for positive change in the Goulburn Murray community.

OBJECTIVES The Fairley Leadership Program encourages the development of a vigorous network of community leaders by: • offering emerging leaders an intensive annual program that explores the major issues and opportunities for the Goulburn Murray region;

Community Leadership is the courage, creativity and capacity to inspire participation, development and sustainability for strong communities. Sir Gustav Nossal, a great Australian community leader, scientist, thinker and former Australian of the Year.

• providing an environment where emerging leaders from the business, government, cultural, community and agricultural sectors can develop links and understanding; • enabling emerging leaders to meet and learn from existing leaders; and • combining emerging and existing leaders as a continuing resource of skills and influence to further enrich the community.

Goulburn Murray Community Leadership would like to acknowledge the financial and in-kind contributions of our sponsors for the Fairley Leadership Program in 2013. MAJOR SPONSOR

PATRON’S REPORT Emma Dalton (FF’08) Deputy Chair

When we first gathered with a group of enthusiasts to create a community leadership program in the Goulburn Valley, some 16 years ago, I remember a number of “wise old heads” saying the program would survive for a few years and then we would “run out of good candidates.” I often reflect on those comments - with considerable delight! Year after year, each and every cohort has added demonstrable value to our community; those of us who were “in at the beginning” are so very proud of the program participants since 1997. Their influence, their activity, their fingerprints are everywhere around us – in local and state government, in our water authorities, on our community boards and sporting clubs, service clubs and fundraising groups.

Last year, for instance, I made the heartfelt observation that the need for community leadership had never been greater: the partisan character of our political debate, the feelings of angst and uncertainty among Australians (despite our relative prosperity and security compared to the rest of the world) seemed to imply a community which was crying out for reassurance, direction, purpose and principled leadership. And what has occurred in the year since? Two remarkable initiatives: the launch of the Lighthouse Project, a 20-year program to support early intervention and furnish primary schools with the tools and support services to address some of the “wicked problems” in our community that have defied conventional solutions – energised by a board replete with Fairley fellows and driven by the Fairley Foundation. Then, the launch of the Committee For Greater Shepparton, a gathering of regional leaders from the business, agribusiness and institutional sectors of local government, water, health, educational and community agencies – a formidable alliance sharing the goal of improving the prosperity and amenity of the regional community. Again, it is heavily populated with Fairley Fellows. I congratulate the new Fairley Fellows of 2013 – you have become part of a worthwhile endeavour and I look forward to your contribution to the betterment of our community.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Whilst the 2013 Cohort has been fulfilling their commitment to undertake this year’s program, the Board has been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure not only that we continue to deliver a quality course but to secure the long term viability of the program. To this end Fairley Leadership has entered into partnerships with the La Trobe University Regional MBA Program in Shepparton and GOTAFE to give our alumni the opportunity to undertake business management courses. Both these organisations will offer the Fairley Leadership Fellows course credits for leadership modules, simply because they have completed the program. This is a testament to the value our community places on the Fairley Leadership Program. In addition, I and other Board members have participated in various forums such as the Victorian Regional Community Leadership Programs (VRCLP) Professional Development Days. This has given us broader exposure to governance training, networking and the potential for sharing resources. To complement this we also have completed risk management and strategic planning, all fundamentals of Board responsibilities. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Victorian Government through the Regional Growth Fund and our regional partners, the City of Greater Shepparton, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Goulburn-Murray Water and Goulburn Valley Water for their commitment to the Fairley Leadership Program in 2013. In 2014 the Board will strive to secure future funding, strengthen existing as well as forge new partnerships and greater community exposure which will consolidate our position in the community for years to come. I sincerely thank my fellow Board members who generously give up their free time for Board meetings and various committees. As a team I feel we have made significant progress into addressing the challenges that we foresee over the next 2 years. I would like to personally acknowledge and thank our Executive Director Amanda McClaren and Executive Assistant Tracey Creighton, both of whom show a level of professionalism, commitment and enthusiasm that give the Board a lot of encouragement. To the cohort, it was pointed out at this year’s launch that this is “not a free ride”. You have embarked on a journey by undertaking the Fairley Program and it now time for you to repay the faith placed upon you by your family, friends, employers and community. Now is the time to step up to be true leaders and you will do so knowing you have the support of the entire Fairley Leadership community.

Glenn Bewicke Chair

executive director’s REPORT The Fairley Leadership Program, the flagship community leadership program in the Goulburn Murray region aspires to develop leaders as ‘catalysts for positive change’ in the region. In this my first year as the Executive Director for the Fairley Leadership Program, there have been challenges and opportunities, but the reward of seeing the journey, growth and change of our cohort over the past eleven months has been a privilege beyond compare. I would like to thank the cohort for their commitment and trust in the Fairley Leadership journey this year. Of course our Fairley participants could not achieve all that they need to during the year without the support of their employers, family and friends and we gratefully acknowledge their support this year. The Fairley Leadership Program would not function without the generous support of our sponsors, supporters and guest speakers this year, many of whom donate their time, energy and expertise to help develop our community leaders. To our hosts, who generously offer their facilities and provide catering for the Fairley Leadership Program Seminar Days, I would like to express our gratitude to you for your ongoing support. Without your support the Fairley Leadership Program would not have had the longevity of the last seventeen years. I would like to acknowledge the Victorian Government for their support through the Regional Growth Fund and for the support of the Victorian Regional Community Leadership Secretariat, Ms Katrina Baddeley and the nine other Victorian Regional Community Leadership Programs and Leadership Victoria. A special thank you to Chris Kotur and Kim Scanlon, whose guidance and support has been invaluable in my first year as the Executive Director – thank you. I feel privileged to have worked so closely with this year’s cohort. I am extremely proud of the professional manner in which they conducted themselves, the compassion they showed to both our guest speakers and each other and their willingness to take on a community environmental arts project and make it their own. All these attributes lead me to have the confidence that these remarkable people will have a positive influence on the region in the years to come. I wish all the 2013 Fairley Leadership Graduates all the very best for the future, and remind you that your community leadership journey does not stop here, you are now a part of the over 450 Fairley Leadership Alumni, known affectionately as Fairley Fellows. As Fairley Fellows I look forward to seeing the impact of your community leadership. In reflecting on the words you heard at the very start of the year, I encourage all of the 2013 graduates to ‘open your hearts, your minds and your arms’ to the vast opportunities community leadership roles offer you in the future.

A recent discussion on pathways to directorship has encouraged me to consider future board participation. Inspiration, Change and Motivation Personal stories from inspirational leaders, their intelligence and positive engagement with our group have been a highlight for me. I have also learnt much more about the community I live in; Sikh Temple, new irrigation methods, historic house at Rumbalara, kitchen operation at Goulburn Valley Health. The Canberra visit also provided opportunities that couldn’t be had outside this program; meeting Anna Bourke MP, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives and Assistant Treasurer, Senator The Hon Arthur Sinodinos AO and

KYM bailey attending functions at United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) and the National Press Club. My Passion Easing the transition to university study of mature age students who take the opportunity to pursue regional higher education. Most Inspirational Speaker Cathy McGowan AO, now standing as an independent for the seat of Indi. Her topic of “bloom where you are planted” was an inspiring talk about contributing to your community just as we began this program and has resonated ever since while listening to other local leaders. Key Take-Away Message Learning from other’s leadership journeys can also lead to action in our own aspirations. My goal following Fairley My goal for next year is to either join an active community group or to stand for a board position. Leadership Quote “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead.

Place of residence Kirwan’s Bridge Job title/role Marketing & Communications Manager Organisation The Work Group (Consisting of Worktrainers, GAME Traffic & Contracting and Recruitment Select) Sponsor The Work Group Current Community Involvement Active member of the Murchison Primary School Parent’s Club. Future Goals and Plans Continuing as an active participant within my children’s school community as they move through their education. However, as my family commitments decrease I hope to find a voluntary role within an organisation that I am passionate about and reflects my own values and vision for the area and who will benefit from my experience and skills. Inspiration, Change and Motivation The Fairley program has consolidated and broadened my knowledge of the Goulburn Valley. My understanding of the complex challenges and issues facing the region has been greatly enhanced. It has been inspirational to meet the local leaders who are working to overcome these challenges and securing a positive future for all in this area.

Additionally working for an organisation whose values reflect my own and has a positive impact on the local community. Most Inspirational Speaker Peter Bicknell, Partner, MB + M Business Solutions. I really appreciated Peter’s honesty and straight forward advice. He is a local leader who has made a positive contribution to the community by following his heart and passions. Key Take-Away Message Stay above the Line; Family should always come first; Get involved in causes you are passionate about and get out when you lose the passion; You have to first dream it before you can do it; It is OK to say no. My goal following Fairley Having recently stepped into a management position, I would like to concentrate on consolidating this role over the next 12 months and I imagine I will draw on much of what I have learnt over the past 12 months to assist me achieve this to great success. Leadership Quote “You make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give.” – Winston Churchill.

My Passion My family is my number one passion. Their best interests are at the core of all my decisions and community involvement.

Inspiration, Change and Motivation The dynamic that occurs when 24 people who have had little contact with each other are thrown together in an environment such as Fairley Leadership is a very exciting experience. You can see yourself change and see yourself through the eyes of others in a way that you don’t in day-to-day life. This and the guest speakers input cause you to re-evaluate what is possible, and where you can focus your energies for the benefit of the wider community. My Passion Big ideas. Most Inspirational Speaker Assistant Treasurer, Senator The Hon Arthur Sinodinos AO. He gave real leadership lessons – on honesty and authenticity. He is an inspiring politician who is a great thinker, and considerer of issues (as opposed to those who are totally party political). Key Take-Away Message It is essential to consider issues from all angles, and you will be much more influential if there is personal honesty and integrity to your argument. My goal following Fairley To move on with life, but push to apply the big ideas to the future of the Shepparton community. I intend to pick a few channels and focus on these for a pre-set period of time. Leadership Quote “Leaders who are in touch generally are not leading. Stay in contact with my cohort and continue to learn from them, share experiences and knowledge.
