GOULBURN RIVER VALLEY IS HOME TO SOME OF AUSTRALIA’S OLDEST VINES INCLUDING CENTURIESOLD SHIRAZ AND MARSANNE VARIETIES BROUGHT FROM FRANCE’S RHONE VALLEY AND PLANTED IN 1860. THE AREA’S COOL CLIMATE PRODUCES SOME SENSATIONAL WINES – SOME COMPLETELY ORGANIC – AND BOASTS MANY TALENTED WINEMAKERS PASSIONATE ABOUT THEIR CRAFT.

Spend a day, a week or even longer to explore the beautiful countryside and discover the many relaxed and friendly cellar doors and cafes dotted across the Goulburn River Valley. The welcome is always warm and winemakers are happy to share their secrets over a tasting glass or two! The Goulburn River Valley Wine region is diverse, producing rich and complex wines with distinctive regional character from the ancient, deep red soils of the weathered ranges and the alluvial loams of the fertile river flats. The differing soil profiles paired with the cool climate brought about by vast areas of inland waterways result in delicate flavours and aromatics. The region’s signature grape varieties include Marsanne, Roussanne, Shiraz, Vigonier and Grenache, lovingly crafted into award-winning wines by master winemakers.

Many wineries pair fabulous local fare with their fine wines at a variety of cellar door cafes and restaurants. Visitors can savour a full gourmet lunch or a simple, delicious platter or selection of handmade cheeses to match wine tastings. Either way, the combination of great wine, lovely settings and excellent food can prove irresistible!

If you prefer a nice crisp, cold beer while enjoying the views, an artisan brewery might be more your style. Brewing beer is also a time honoured craft and well worth the stop. Cheers!

IN LARGE PART BY THE EARLY TIMBER-GETTERS AND PIONEERING FARMERS WHOSE LEGACY IS STILL EVIDENT TODAY. THIS IS THE AREA THAT SHAPED NED KELLY AND HIS GANG. IT WAS A PLACE AUSTRALIAN LIGHTHORSEMEN TRAINED BEFORE HEADING TO ANZAC COVE AND LATER, TO THE JUNGLES OF VIETNAM.

Visitors can take a fascinating journey through time, encountering rustic cottages and homesteads, classic shearing sheds, historic streetscapes, trains and rail lines from the 19th century that tell the story of the region since European settlement. Explore fascinating museums with remarkable collections of lovingly restored locomotives, early rail and farm machinery and equipment as well as documents and photographs that bring to life the history of the Goulburn River Valley. Echoes of Ned Kelly can be heard across the rugged ranges he roamed with his gang and in the townships where his reputation as Australia’s most notorious bushranger was cemented. Key sites in the Kelly saga can be explored along the Ned Kelly Touring Route including the National Bank at Euroa which the gang famously robbed and took hostages. Links with Australia’s wartime history dating back to the Boer War can also be explored here. Established during World War II, this area has Victoria’s largest military training centre and one of the largest armour museums in the Southern Hemisphere.

In the well-preserved buildings, in the extraordinary collections of the museums and even in the vineyards of some of Australia’s oldest wineries, visitors can glimpse the hardships and triumphs, the ingenuity and the prosperity and the heroes and villains who so shaped this region’s rich and colourful past.

The Vietnam Veteran’s Commemorative walk in Seymour honours all those who played a part in Australia’s tumultuous history. Find out more on page 42 STEP BACK IN TIME – Be sure to walk Euroa’s Heritage Trail and visit significant places that showcase the towns history.

MANY HISTORIC BUILDINGS BUIL DOTTED DOTTE AROUND THE REGION ARE DATED CIRCA LATE 1800’S. KILMORE, SETTLED IN 1837, IS SETTLE VICTORIA’S OL OLDEST INLAND TOWN.

Just some of the natural places to enjoy include: Lake Eildon and the Goulburn River were recently voted Victoria’s most popular freshwater lake and river fishing spots. The land just beyond the Great Divide has been culturally significant to Aboriginal people for thousands of years and many continue to have strong connections to country today. The region’s post-European history is also evident with many places still reflecting their early heritage of gold mining and timber harvesting. Cambarville Historic Township and surrounding area in Yarra Ranges National Park is a great place to discover how the early pioneers of the area lived and worked and learn about their remarkable feats of engineering and timber milling that shaped the region. Visit the Rubicon State Forest and see evidence of Victoria’s first hydro-electric scheme and the timber tramways from the timber harvesting days. There are many more historic locations to explore.

MANY OF THE REGION’S SECRETS CAN BE DISCOVERED ON FOOT, BY BOAT OR BIKE AND EVEN ON HORSEBACK. THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO PLAN AN ACTION-PACKED ADVENTURE GETAWAY.

For starters, how about a day or even a weekend on the green? The region boasts a number of excellent and picturesque golf courses to suit everyone from rank amateurs to seasoned pros. The fairways are long and scenic and the putting greens approachable. The bunkers are best avoided altogether! For a change of pace, the Rail Trails and guided bike and walking paths crisscrossing the valley offer fantastic opportunities for walking, cycling or horseriding. Over hundreds of kilometres the trails cross rivers and wind past billabongs and lakes, historic rail lines, parks and waterfalls. And along the way a close encounter with native wildlife is entirely possible so don’t forget the camera! This is an excellent way to explore the many delights of this lovely part of the world. In winter, Australia’s premier cross-country skiing resort at Lake Mountain offers 30 km of fantastic trails to explore, just 90 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD.

Don’t forget the beautiful Goulburn River! Take a canoe safari, go for a swim or drop in a line to catch the elusive big one. This magical river is the lifeline of the region, offering endless possibilities for adventurous souls of all ages.

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is not just a skiing mecca, but a year round adventure playground! In winter go tobogganing and in summer hike or mountain bike to the summit

IN THE HEART OF THE GOULBURN RIVER VALLEY YOU CAN DISCOVER THREE OF VICTORIA’S MOST CHARMING WINERIES…TAHBILK, FOWLES WINE AND MITCHELTON WINES. ALL ARE WITHIN A 15 MINUTE DRIVE OF EACH OTHER, SPREADING ACROSS THE NAGAMBIE LAKES AND STRATHBOGIE WINE REGIONS. EACH WINERY OFFERS ITS OWN UNIQUE EXPERIENCE WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAMPLE THE FINEST OF WINE AND DELIGHT EVERY TASTEBUD WITH DELICIOUS FOOD. A RELAXING WINERY DAY TRIP IS ONLY A SHORT 90 MINUTE DRIVE FROM MELBOURNE CBD, A TRULY UNTOUCHED SECRET AND MORE THAN YOU’D EXPECT!

Established in 1860 Tahbilk is one of Australia’s most beautiful and historic wineries; best known for its Rhone varietals including its rare Marsanne vines (planted 1927) and treasured Shiraz (planted 1860), which are amongst the oldest in the world.

Fowles Wine is a contemporary winery located in the ruggedly beautiful Strathbogie Ranges, Central Victoria. Overlooking neighbouring wine regions, the elevated slopes and granite rich soils in which our vines grow yield some of Australia’s finest cool climate wines.

There’s no better place to taste the diverse range of premium Tahbilk wines than in the original and historic Cellar Door that dates back to its founding. After your tasting, take in some of the historical significance of the Winery as you wander through and around the original underground cellars (classified by the National Trust) and cellar yard buildings, dating back to the mid and late 1800’s. Cellar Door is open Weekdays 9am – 5pm, Weekends and Public Holidays 10am – 5pm.

Fowles Wine is the world’s first winery to craft wines to match wild meat and encourage more thought around food provenance and our ‘Real Food, Real Wine’ ethos also underpins our approach to hospitality.

The architecturally striking Tahbilk Café is the perfect place to meet friends for lunch or to revitalise after your wine tasting. Overlooking the Estate’s dedicated Wetlands Reserve, you can select from a diverse range of gourmet Cafe offerings matched to your preferred Tahbilk red or white, or just enjoy a coffee and a slice of cake and, if time permits, take a leisurely stroll along the Tahbilk Wetlands Eco Trails or a more relaxed Eco Cruise (please check for running times). Open Thursday to Monday 11am – 4pm. Bookings essential.

Mitchelton Wines is well renowned for its unique architectural design and iconic tower, along with amazing views both from a height and from the banks of the Goulburn River. The river surrounds the vineyard on three sides, shaping the environment for Mitchelton’s wines. The result is, four starkly different soil profiles, each creating individual vineyards within a vineyard. The Mitchelton team recognise that each individual block bears fruit exhibiting distinctive flavour characters. This understanding creates an intimate and focused approach to winemaking that has been applied for over 40 years, wines of distinct personality, finesse and longevity. Emerging winemaker, Travis Clydesdale is dedicated to ensuring Mitchelton’s proud winemaking legacy continues.

The newly renovated Cellar Door offers the perfect environment to enjoy Mitchelton’s specialty, Rhône varietals, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache, as well as the renowned Riesling. Enjoy the views of the picturesque Yea River as you cross the cable suspension bridge and stroll along tracks and raised walkways along the 1.5 km interpretive Franklin Track. Be sure to walk quietly though and keep an eye out for the elusive platypus, koala and native birds such as the sacred kingfisher that make these wetlands home. The interpretive signs provide you with key information about the wetland ecology and our indigenous community to the Taungurong clan. During November to February be sure to look for the Ancient Greenling damselfly (H. mirabilis). This small metallic coloured damselfly with distinctive white tail is one of the oldest species on earth. It has only been observed at five other sites in Australia. You may be lucky to see it in the reeds around the edge of the wetlands. Be sure to walk along the time path near Hood Street and learn about our planet’s oldest land based flora fossil,

Baragwanathia longifolia or improve your knowledge of the importance of wetland ecology, our water resources and the region’s indigenous history and culture. Picnic facilities and free electric BBQ available. Keep an eye out for progress on the new $2M Y Water Centre at Yea Wetlands. This striking Centre, connecting the town to nature is due to open in early 2014. The Y Water Centre will house the new regional Visitor Information Centre and engaging interpretive displays that help answer the question - Why Water? Water is our most precious natural resource, one that is essential to all forms of life. The Y Water Centre will become a must see attraction.
