I started dancing when I was seven and I just couldn’t wait until I could dance in competitions. It has always been a passion, I never really thought I would end up dancing all over the world like this. I am going to Italy next to dance and I’ve always wanted to go to Italy. These are dreams come true.
You are away from home a lot, how do you relax when you come back to Shepparton? Because I am so active when dancing I like to relax at home or go to the cinema. I’m never home longer than about two months at a time so I am such a home body when I’m here. Going out to bars and clubs doesn’t interest me. I just love doing not much at all and catch up with family and friends.

Your dance outfits are so glamorous, what do you like to wear when you are not dancing? My boyfriend is always going crook at how I dress. I’m not very good at fashion and putting things together. He is. I like to be casual in jeans and t shirts after having to dress up all the time. I’m not too fussed at all on what I wear when I’m not dancing.
What would be your best tip for people who are thinking of taking up dancing?

Don’t be afraid to let yourself go and have fun. Mostly people don’t even try because they are worried about looking foolish. Have fun with it. That is what I told the guys I danced with on the show. Echuca’s history. The massive five storey building was much larger than other provincial flour mills because of its location near a major wheat belt and in a bustling river port. Inside the mill, large wood-fired furnaces fuelled milling machinery which was state of the art for its day. Two and a half tons of flour was produced per hour – a remarkable achievement. Fine quality Echuca “Pearl” Baker’s flour was much sought after and was sent by rail to Melbourne for export to countries all over the world. When the mill closed down in the early 1970s the building was used to produce stock feeds. In the late 1980s it was transformed into a night club and bar. Scott and Kerrie Pitts have now turned the bottom two

Scott has four chef’s hats and Kerrie has many years of experience at front of house. However they are certainly multi-skilled as they did much of the renovation work themselves. “It was a great experience doing everything from scratch,â€? Kerrie explains. “Whilst some alterations had already been made, we still had a lot of work to do. Scott designed a new kitchen to suit his needs. Having worked in a number of restaurants he loves having everything just the way he wants it. We named our restaurant Ceres after the Roman Goddess of agriculture, cereals and wheat in recognition of the mill’s 90 years of operation.â€? Scott and Kerrie have cleverly preserved the integrity of the heritagelisted building. Heavy timber posts and beams and internal brickwork give it a cosy warmth. The interior dĂŠcor manages to combine a comfortable atmosphere with a sense of elegance and class. Scott and Kerrie sourced the eclectic mix of furnishings from various auction houses. In line with the trend away from cold, minimalist interiors there are rich Persian rugs and antique sideboards. Plump leather lounge suites near the downstairs bar are great for enjoying pre-dinner drinks or sharing some Tapas with friends. About once a fortnight there’s live music on a Friday evening.

Large chandeliers set the scene in an adjacent area, which is more formal. A mezzanine floor above has gilt rococo mirrors and crisp, white linen table cloths. A recent patron comments, “Ceres is relaxed but luxurious. There’s lots of room between tables so we could have a conversation without others listening in. We were at Ceres on a busy Saturday night but we didn’t have to raise our voices to talk. At many other restaurants, particularly in Melbourne, it can be very noisy. Sometimes we’ve been so close to the people on the next table we almost felt we should ask them to join us.” For total privacy there is a separate bar and function area, which is ideal for business seminars or meetings. Alternatively the whole restaurant area is available for weddings, conventions or parties. Because of the mezzanine the area can become one large space. The restaurant is open from 10am every day except Sunday. The menu is modern and contemporary but based on traditional cooking styles. Sauces and stocks are all cooked on the premises and many ingredients are obtained locally. Scott’s absolute passion for food is evident in the range of highly imaginative dishes he creates. Be adventurous and try the Pan seared Atlantic salmon on rice noodles and choy sum with a coconut curry sauce and finished with a seaweed salad. If your taste is for the more traditional you may prefer the delicious pan roasted lamb rack on garlic potatoes and sautéed spinach with black cherry and red wine jus. A dessert with a difference is caramelized banana risotto with pure maple syrup.

The home, near Shepparton, has been rendered and painted in olive tones to blend with its surrounds. Large cedar windows and French doors have opened up all rooms to fill the home with light and provide uninterrupted views of the garden and natural billabong at the back of the property. “As it turned out we really didn’t have to make too many structural changes to the old home to make it our own, the bones were already there,” Lisa says. An extension to the living area with some smart exterior angles and a third bedroom was all that was needed to cater for the couples needs. Wide timber verandahs make the connection between indoor and outdoor living. Natural and neutral tones are echoed inside with light olive and white-on-white used to give a feeling of spaciousness in the dining/living area. New polished timber floors are a perfect choice. Lisa injects color, like red and earthy browns, on furniture, cushions and artwork to create a cosy warmth. Eclectic pieces of furniture like the distressed antique chest of drawers in the master bedroom also add color and texture. Many of the eye catching accessories have been purchased from a favorite haunt of Lisa’s, Plain Design in Echuca. HOMESCAPE Magazine

A contemporary kitchen features reconstituted quartz on a large island bench and other work areas, including the walk-in-pantry which is so much more than just storage. The room with ample bench space doubles as a work station for Lisa when she is preparing food for guests. “The house is always full of family and friends and I love to cook for them so this preparation area and pantry was a must for me.” The large timber dining table in the living area is testament to the couple’s entertaining nature and a wood fire in the same room provides ample ambience in these cooler months. Window box seating on the east side of the home makes the most of sun drenched mornings this time of year. The ensuite is a touch of very modern living. “I’ve never had an ensuite before so I wanted it to be special and I did have very firm ideas on what I wanted,” Lisa says. The shower block is behind a tiled wall as an alternative to glass doors and panels and two narrow sets of louvre windows from ceiling to floor allow a view to the garden while in the shower. In the main bathroom, an unexpected splash of color with tiny lime green tiles around the deep bath and chocolate and stone colored tiles on the walls. Melbourne. The laundry has a clever timber drying rack (with small electric heater) built in as a preference to a clothes dryer. “My aunty has one and I love the idea so my Dad, Peter, turned his hand to the task. We use it all year no matter what the weather.”
Clever use of swinging clothes racks make for efficient storage. Lisa admits the renovation was a fairly straightforward project with only one disaster to speak of. “Only one but it is a beauty” Lisa smiles. “The weekend we decide to go to Melbourne because the house has no roof it rained and we returned to a house full of water. “There was a terrible mess,” Lisa says. Dave’s friends still joke about asking him to take off the roof again to make it rain in these times of drought. So now the house is complete, Lisa and Dave find more time to enjoy their large garden, inspired by Lou Costa of Design By Nature. The garden lovers have used circular red brick work and intricate colored glass patterns
to
marry areas in the garden. Natives - Grevillias are a favorite - and drought tolerant plants in the back yard lead to the natural billabong. The front yard features more European style plantings including roses on the front fence, Silver Birches and conifers but nothing is off limits to Max and Charlie, the couple’s two very spoilt Labradors. And while “Bindarra” is still a work in progress it has truly become the place of peace and passion Lisa and David were searching for. [hs]

Kerry greets visitors at a brightly tiled entry, leading to a living room that reveals her passion for art. On each wall are vibrant contemporary artworks. Enormous picture windows frame Kerry’s own creations outside. The Campaspe River and its red gums are a backdrop to surprising glimpses of mosaic spheres and strange statuettes. Out in the garden is a curious collation of tiles and teapots, inkpots and iron lace. “These were cheap to buy as nobody else wanted them,” Kerry points to a headless statue, resurrected and replete with a mantle of pretty porcelain. A colourbond fence, covered with cement sheet, is disguised with disused dinner plates and the petite, dismembered heads of porcelain dolls.

Kerry’s latest work is a series of retaining walls, along which runs a garden of drought resistant plants and a small vegetable patch. She spent months designing the walls, enlisting Brad Smith from B&B Landscaping to help with the labour. Set amongst the stone and bricks are an amazing array of odds and ends that Kerry has collected over several years: a cast iron sign from a High Street Bakery, bluestone from an old church near Yea and antique bottles from an old tip. Kerry enjoys showing off curios like the antique mechanical toilet, which is now a rusty home to succulents. This new area of Kerry’s garden replaces an overgrown permaculture vegetable bed, which she no longer wanted to spend time or water maintaining. Kerry has selected drought tolerant plants that also give the garden a cottage feel, matching the era of the eclectic jumble of items on display. She points out that whilst

The garden also features a number of euphorbia. These very drought- hardy plants have a variety of colours and leaf shapes and incredible flowers, mainly during the summer months. Another favourite of Kerry’s is Echium, with its magnificent blue spires. The indestructible agapanthus and a sprinkling of curry plants have also been selected by Kerry as they too are great survivors in our harsh northern climate. From

This is roughly the same as taking one million cars off the road or planting four million new trees a year! The environmental issue of climate change and greenhouse gases has been firmly placed on the home owner’s agenda with the phasing out of conventional light bulbs in the next three years. Australia wide, home owners, builders and renovators will be required to replace all incandescent light bulbs with new energy saving lighting in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 800 000 tonnes a year. This is a world first energy saving move by Australia. Lighting represents approximately 12 per cent of greenhouse gases from households and the switch to more efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs will slash energy use and costs. Running costs in an average home can be reduced by up to 75 per cent with the new lighting. For example ten 60 watt incandescent globes (GLS) costs up to $190 a year to run and the ten replacement 12 watt compact fluorescent globes (CFL) will cost about $38

Specialty lighting stores, such as Echuca Lighting and Lights Plus Shepparton, are already gearing up with product to cater for the government enforced changes, known as eco friendly lighting. Mark Librio of Lights Plus says the changeover will be simple for home owners with the new products made to fit existing standard light fittings. “All customers need to know is the type of fitting they have. We need to know if they have Edison screw fittings or a bayonet cap and we can supply them with an appropriate lamp.� “While they may be more expensive to buy up front, they will pay for themselves in lower power bills in the first year,� Mark says. When Tim and Prue Dale bought a Federation home in Echuca 7 years ago they discovered that it had a special link to Prue’s past. Tim and Prue Dale bought their home in Echuca after falling in love with its gracious charm. The garden was overgrown and the house needed some work but they could see its potential. They were stunned when, the day after the auction, Prue’s father told them that their new home had been built by W.W. Moore, Prue’s great-great-grandfather. Moore’s first home in Echuca was a tent on the Bridge Hotel site. From these rather humble beginnings Moore went on to became a Mayor of Echuca and a magistrate. He also built much of the district’s best architecture, including the Royal Hotel (now the Harvest Hotel), Moama Court House and the Palace Hotel. Tim and Prue’s knowledge of their home’s history made them especially determined that any alterations maintain the integrity of the original dwelling. Like many old houses the kitchen and laundry out the back were dingy and unworkable, so pulling them down was the first job on the list. However they insisted that the existing chimney be retained, after Tim discovered the name W.W. Moore etched into the mortar. It is now the centrepiece of a stunning renovation.
The first stage involved revamping the existing bathroom and installing a laundry inside it. Cleverly concealed in a cupboard, this is certainly a way to save space.
Tim then removed the original combustion
stove from the central chimney, finding some very old Argus newspapers from the 1920s wrapped around the pipe work. That job completed, it was time to gut the old kitchen and laundry. Tim and Prue concentrated on cleaning up the overgrown garden, whilst the builders took about 5 months to complete the work. The builder had to first support the original ceiling while a gable roof was extended over the new addition. The roof was kept a slightly lower pitch so the beautifully detailed work around the original chimney could still be seen from the outside.

Often rooms that are added appear rather carelessly tacked on to a home. This is not the case here. From the exterior the new section looks like it has always been there. Inside, the ceiling heights of the original house continue through into the new section. As well as being sympathetic to the period of the home, the high ceilings ensure that the whole kitchen/living area has a wonderful sense of space. The old chimney is now a big central column around which sits the kitchen and living area. On one side is a modern, stainless steel stove and on the other is a gas log fire. The kitchen is a classic style that never seems to date. Cupboard doors are painted in Antique White and blackwood bench tops harmonize with the recycled Australian hardwood floors. The contemporary glass splashback fits in well, perhaps because it is painted in a similar colour to the Plantation White walls. The timber doors, windows and trims are all painted Antique White. Against this restrained palette, Wattyl Leek has been used as a subtle highlight in the cove of the deep cornice.

After completing the extension Tim and Prue turned their attention to the original part of the home. All storybook prettiness, this section of the home is delightful. A welcoming entry is awash with light from flower filled leadlight panes. Extending from this is a cosy dining room, formal lounge area and three bedrooms. The bay window in the master bedroom provides tranquil views to the front lawn. There are more dainty leadlights in another bedroom and the dining room. No major work was required in the old part of the home but a quaint window seat was installed in the dining area, along with a marble fire place. All the rooms were freshly painted in colours to suit their individual décor. The dining room is particularly stunning, with Wattyl Russet Pear complementing the glorious garden views.

At the completion of the project in 2003 the home was entered in the Master Builders Association of Victoria regional building awards and was selected as the Best Renovation/Extension. Tim and Prue enjoy sitting under their pergola, cradling a good red and enjoying an excellent result after all that planning and effort. Have you ever had a feeling of anticipation as you approached someone’s garden, trying to catch a first glimpse of what may lay on the far side of the fence? It may be a drive-by to get ideas for your own garden or an invitation from the owner to enjoy their creation but that sensation of not knowing what to expect adds to the experience. It was that exact feeling when Homescape approached the pretty river-lined property of Dawn and Graham Hill, known as Summerhill. In a quiet location on the edge of town, the garden is nestled between neighbors enjoying the same tranquility, but beyond the tall brush box fence is a special and welcoming garden.
The Hill’s have lived at Summerhill for 12 years during which time Dawn has lovingly tended to the grounds to create a sophisticated, but friendly, space. The Shepparton property encompasses 18 hectares of natural bush and the Goulburn River winds its way around most of its perimeter. Dawn’s love of gardening is evident in the many individual sections of the garden, each providing a unique view from the home’s large windows. To the west, ivy-covered pillars frame the natural bush vista at the bottom of a large lawned area. A paved extension off the verandah provides a perfect spot for outdoor seating to watch the sunset. North facing garden beds are full of roses, lavender, agapanthus, primulas, Sasanqua camellias, azaleas, salvias and alyssum. Old fashioned violets and ajugar australis are among the ground covers that thrive in this part of the garden.

“This is my favorite part,” admits Dawn. “I love the romantic cottage-style and here I have something flowering nearly all year.” Dawn has used more than 200 roses throughout the grounds including white and red Meideland, pink and white Iceberg, Pierre de Rothsade, apricot-colored Just Joey and a climber, New Dawn, which frames the north view from an indoor living area. A hedge of ‘Seduction’ roses line one side of the tennis court and mass plantings of gardenias closer to the house provide perfume during most times of the year. Autumn color comes to life on a 10-year-old Tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) which turns from lime green to a brilliant yellow. Liquid Ambers, Japanese Maples and a Manchurian Pear are also spectacular. In spring, two Port Wine Magnolia trees are a stunning feature near the swimming pool and at the front of the property.

“I don’t have any formal training in gardening so I rely a lot on advice from nurseries and friends who have lovely gardens. “I choose plants to suit the style of garden I enjoy most. I love scented flowers and subtle colors close to the house. The stronger shades of orange and red, like that in the rose called Tequila Sunrise, I prefer in the beds further away from the windows,” Dawn said. The garden was low maintenance with established shrubs and trees, and had “great bones” when it was purchased from former politician Peter Ross-Edwards and wife, Joy, who built the home at the location in 1965. Dawn laughs “now it is high maintenance with lots to do all year”, but her passion for being outdoors and the sense of achievement of creating something beautiful keeps her motivated.

Bare all in your garden Now is a fantastic time to plant bare rooted trees in the home garden. Not only is it the perfect time to get them in the ground to make sure they are established before the hot weather, it also means all your favourite trees can be purchased at great prices. One of the biggest advantages of choosing bare rooted plants is that they can cost up to 50 per cent less than the potted specimens available the rest of the year. Nearly all deciduous plants can be bought bare rooted – from ornamentals, fruit trees and roses. What is a bare rooted tree? It is just that, a plant with bare roots. Usually the plants are two to three-yearold field grown stock which are dug up in winter when they are dormant and ready for planting in the home garden. Bare rooted trees should be planted by end of August. After that it’s too late because they start to shoot and transplanting becomes a problem. Bare rooted trees have usually been heeled in (covered lightly with soil or sawdust) at the nursery to protect the roots from drying out. At home, trees can stay like this for up to two weeks if they cannot be immediately planted.

When buying a tree look for the graft union, making sure that it is clean and that no shoots appear below the union. The main branch above the union should be straight and sturdy with a good, well developed system of shoots. For planting, dig a generous hole twice the size of the root diameter. Trim any damaged roots. Moisten roots in a bucket of water, spread the roots out in a natural position. Sometimes it helps to mound a pile of soil at the base to help support the root system. Then backfill, wiggle the tree as you go, and add water to remove any air pockets. Don’t fertilise until the tree starts growing in spring. If the tree does not feel sturdy, loosely stake it until the tree is established. Pruning at this stage is vitally important. The top of the tree should be pruned to match the root size to encourage a balanced tree, and also remove shoots in the middle of the plant to retain openness. Cut branches to about 30 centimetres from the main trunk, and to a bud. Then to encourage a nice branching habit remove the leader.

As a token of our heritage we looked at the surnames of our eight grandparents – Fyffe, Ashmead, Searle, Pender, Lawn, Harper, Diamond and Bradfield – and chose Fyffe Field to represent our family ‘s venture into the wine industry.” Fyffe Field’s most popular wines are the Verdelho with 2006 vintage on sale now and the 2003 Petit Verdot. The winery will also be the new home of the infamous Cobram Crème which was sold by Cobram’s Heritage Farm Wines until recently. “We are excited about continuing the Cobram Crème tradition here and look forward to its loyal followers visiting our winery,” Glenn said.

225 gram dark chocolate
350 gram whole almonds
1 tsp vanilla
65 ml Brandy
200 gram brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
25 gram butter

A simple thing like running around a sports oval with her son is one of the most recent highlights of Sonya Rowe’s successful weight loss program.

I am at a level of fitness I never considered possible. I work hard at the gym and am really proud of that.”
Sonya encourages all ages and sizes to make the effort to become healthier and fitter. “I know it sounds like such a little thing but to just run around a sports oval with my son is a really satisfying achievement after being overweight. Being an active and fitter mum is great for the boys too.”
