NEWSLETTER
WELCOME TO OUR NEWSLETTER! Prom Racing has been involved in the Formula Student competition since 2008 studying, designing and manufacturing a Formula racing car. Our team has received significant distinctions in the past and based on results is one of the most successful teams in Greece and the world. In addition, we are the first Greek team to take the 1st place in an official Formula Student competition, the Formula Student Czech Republic 2021. After the successful summer in Formula Student competitions, we have started designing our second electric racing car. In our newsletter you can read about our goals and each subteam’s progress.

Mechanical Design & Manufacturing
TITLE GOES HERE
The Design and Manufacturing subteam has started the manufacturing process, after having completed the first “Design Freeze” and finalizing the vehicle core design. Specifically, we have completed the manufacturing of all key components of the suspension system, and have started with the manufacturing of the monocoque, a labor intensive process which lasts for more than two months. Moreover, the design and optimization of the carbon fiber monocoque layup is complete. Furthermore, work is being put into finishing the design of parts for the second “Design Freeze”, which includes high voltage electronics and their enclosures, the cable harness, ergonomic features (steering wheel, driver seat) and the aerodynamic package.

Vehicle Dynamics During the December-January period the Vehicle Dynamics subteam was involved not only with finalizing the suspension kinematics and other general conceptual vehicle studies, but also with other critical performance areas. Using steady state simulations the top level kinematics goals were set and finalized to allow for the detailed design of its components. Additionally, the team proceeded with the development of the full vehicle simulation model using ChassisSim, while also creating tools for integrated optimization. Furthermore, updated multibody dynamic models were created to assist in evaluating the fulfillment of the main suspension goals. Finally, as an addition to the powertrain capabilities of the new vehicle the development of a traction control system continued using a self developed longitudinal vehicle model to test and tune the proposed algorithm.
Aerodynamics & Cooling
The main point of interest for the Aerodynamics department during this period of time was the design and development of the aerodynamic package of the team's new vehicle. A multitude of new designs were tested in all individual parts of the package, resulting in an increase in negative lift coefficient of 0.6 at the nominal design point, thus exceeding the gain in downforce between our 2 previous cars (transition from P19 to P20). This marked the achievement of the department's largest design goal set at the beginning of the conceptual design! At the same time, our team dedicated themselves to modifying the design of the elements of the package in dynamic conditions, especially in braking and cornering situations, achieving a reduction in sensitivity down to just 2% in the former and an increase in by 0.4 in cornering cases compared to last year's car! Regarding the cooling system, the design of the engine – accumulator container and control electronics cooling system was completed. The concept followed includes, among other things, the use of ducts mounted inside the side wings to guide the airflow into the accumulator in the most aerodynamically efficient manner, as well as the use of a low – power fan to dissipate heat from the engine, located at the rear of the diffuser.

Electronics The season of December and January is a critical one for the Electronics subteam, as it is for the whole team. Τhe reason for this is that the results of our designing decisions are becoming more obvious. In addition, we are in the middle of our one year plan and under the pressure of the competitions’ Registration Quiz. Thus, the importance of specific projects’ deadlines is evident. More specifically, the implementation of the shutdown systems’s PCBs, the ECU and the cooling control PCB is almost completed. Now, our goal is their optimization, taking into consideration that those PCBs fulfill the rules. Simultaneously, the Battery Management System Research is continued, for both the LV and the HV battery. Here, we should also mention the manufacturing of another PCB for the charge/discharge experiment of our sample battery cells. The conduction of this experiment will generate meaningful data about the thermal losses and the maximum input and output current of our accumulator. It will also help us build a better accumulator model that will simulate its discharge curves and its dynamic characteristics. Moreover, we are occupied with the electrical wiring design via Solidworks software. Finally, some members of our subteam are establishing the foundations for the Driverless vehicle, which is a potential plan for the next season.

Marketing The Marketing subteam proceeded between December 2021 and January
2022 to the promotion of the Christmas and New Year`s social media campaign, highlighting the best moments that Prom Racing experienced in the racing year 2021. Also in December, the official photoshooting of the new year’s team took place and the “Team Lunch” campaign was designed, in which the public will be able to meet the members of all subteams. In addition, during this period, the “Corporate Business Presentations” were published in our official website for all our sponsors, which belong to the following tiers: Platinum, Gold and Silver Sponsors. This new privilege was created in order to illustrate the common actions we have with each partner who supports our effort.
In terms of the Business Plan Presentation, the subteam is in the process of brainstorming for this year’s business idea. Mid-February is the deadline that has been set, when the final idea will be decided.
