Cadena and Esrawe belong to a new breed of Mexican designers creating everyday objectives based on popular culture, breaking boundaries between design, science, sculpture, utilitarian art, architecture and installation. The folk culture of Mexico is the main motivation behind the works of these designers/artists because, as Esrawe mentioned in his website, at each installation they want to portray “the traditions and skills of the craftsmen of Mexico, as a legacy of our culture”. In 2014 they presented at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia an installation called “Mi Casa, Your Casa” that recreates the colors and textures of Mexican markets with the purpose of being interactive, that is, the assistants to the museum laid back and relaxed in 40 hammocks framed within houseshaped tubes; a provocative invitation to slack after the exhaustive tour of museums. “Mi Casa, Your Casa” drew inspiration from the vivacity of the street markets of Mexico, where every day there are social interactions. The color red on the other hand, has to do with the colorful stalls of each merchant in such spaces of interaction, besides the contrast it makes with the white purity of the museum, say Esrawe and Cadena in the press statement of the museum. In 2013 they took to the same museum the “Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting” installation, based on the daily life of the Mexican painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. “Los Trompos” is the new itinerant exhibition of sculptures and an interactive installation, based on the popular Mexican toy that this year was presented by Esrawe and Cadena. Achieving a balance between the one’s desires and the other’s interests is what allows one to reach the desired objective There should be no closer, more delicate and intimate relationship than that of an architect with his/her client, except maybe for that between a therapist and his/her patient, that is. This is especially true because that client “knows nothing” about design or structure, but without whom that ancient activity that includes both art and business could not be carried out. No School of Architecture seriously addresses the labyrinths involved in such a commercial venture even though the urban environs depend on it. If the building or home arises from common sense and empathy between the parties, then the result is positive. However, the result will be negative when you have a capricious client wanting the usually impossible project of their dreams, clashing with a professional who is also dreaming, but of a masterpiece of his own. “No architect who has a high concept of his own worth, and wants to express his spirit and utilize his resources to the max can honestly build a certain style based solely on his client’s wishes”, Amancio Williams wrote in a letter to his brother who had asked that he build him a house to his own desire. Although the physiognomy of some metropolis suggests that romantic posturing was never common in this world, the market and the need to build and work maintain this intricate dilemma: who succumbs to whom? How to materialize both parties’ interests? CONTINUES PAGE 26

“Sometimes one ends up acting like a psychologist” Gabriela Barrionuevo admitted. Twenty-two years ago, she founded a studio that designs family housing in Mexico City with Adriana Gomez. “There are basically two profiles, the one that is open to the proposal and accepts your knowledge, and the other type who want to do things their own way. This is more common with young couples building

their first home. You can see the differences between the two when their tastes don’t match. Generally speaking, if you submit to all of their whims, the project turns out to be a disaster.” She tells of a woman who they’ve been suffering with for the past five months, who continuously rips up the future house’s floor plans, changes the measurements of the garage and the dining room, finally messing up all the other measurements. The construction job never begins and patience wears thin. “A few years ago we had a bad experience”, said Adriana Gomez. “We rarely make a stairway that doesn’t belong in the house and in that case they made us hide it away and they changed the kitchen entirely. The finished product made us very unhappy since it doesn’t really have our seal. During the work, some of the ideas change and when the job is finished, then they can see you were right. You can see how the relationship with a client will be from the first visit.”

ing him. Frank Lloyd Wright, infamous for his bad temper, exploded in a fury when the owner of Fallingwater had his design reviewed by a team of engineers. On the other hand, there was Alvar Aalto, who was a balanced man, even humble, who could find solutions to bridge his differences with his clients. Far from that ideal was Mies van der Rohe, whose worst idea was to have an affair with the owner of the Farnsworth House. The relationship ended in a shambles and the woman ended up heading a crusade against modern architecture. So, does the architect propose and the client accept? What the market needs is a balance. “I never impose my ideas 100 percent. In general, I give the client a lot of participation. I listen and try to translate what he/she wants”, Jorge Dominguez explained. His firm specializes in interior design and design for commercial locations for big labels. “I try to create a project according to my criteria and aesthetics, but no matter how much I dislike it, if a client asks for something specific, I give it to him, period. If they want minimalism, it’ll be minimalism; if they want style, I give them style. Many will come in with a magazine saying: “I want his or do that”. In that case, it’ll depend on the space available and the budget. Everything is lovely until you crunch some numbers! I had an unbearable client once that just made us the executors of his ideas. We had to do everything he wanted or nothing. He was so obsessive that he’d even use mirrors to look under the doors to ensure that they had been painted underneath. We felt terrible. A little while ago we did a project we’re embarrassed by, but we interpreted the owner’s desires and she’s totally happy with it, so that compensates for it. I think our job depends a lot on give and take; adapting without becoming submissive.”

Skyscraper Fame In the 21st century we have a lot of contemporary architects becoming the new divas of the media firmament. They travel around the world on their private jet, they won’t draw even a stick figure for less than $2000 dollars and they participate in international contests just to give more luster to their and their studio’s name (even though these fabulous monuments will never be built). However, aside from the elite, there is a generation of professionals whose feet are firmly grounded and who maintain the idea of service above and beyond any personal speculation. Most of them try to give their clients a fair share of participation in the project, convinced that they aren’t ignorant, but have some common sense, are aware of their needs and are able to understand the abc’s of spatial psychology. — By Marina Gonzalez

TO FRACTION OR NOT TO FRACTION? To fraction or not to fraction? That is the question!

Want a million dollar property but have a $100,000 dollar budget? Not quite ready to take on the responsibility and expenses of managing a home for 365 days a year? Don’t yet know if Puerto Vallarta is the place you want to retire, but like the idea of enjoying a month or two in paradise? Waiting for the kids to leave the nest so you can finally enjoy some YOU time? If you answered YES to the above, you might just be the perfect candidate for fractional ownership!

Say Bye Bye to Beach Rental Blues

With 2016 just around the corner, now’s the moment to start thinking outside the box regarding how you like to spend your free time, and in particular, your retirement. Fractional property ownership in Puerto Vallarta is starting to make a lot of sense to a lot of people, especially those who are not yet ready to make the leap into full time PV living. Trade time consuming beach rental hunting for a place you can call your own with none of the hassles and expenses of full ownership.

Fractional Real Estate in Puerto Vallarta – What’s the Deal?

While you can’t deny the advantages and luxury of full ownership of a second home in Puerto Vallarta, not everyone is in the position to commit full time to a life in paradise, yet they still want to make Banderas Bay their home away from home for a significant amount of time each year. Fractional real estate is the ideal compromise, and at Garza Blanca Signature Residences, you could own your fraction at one of the most luxurious resorts in Puerto Vallarta. Fractional assets at Garza Blanca start at just $200,000

How do you like paradise? One Fraction or Two? Punta Vista Signature Residence (Punta Mita) Ocean Front Elegance starting at $595,000

Another reason that deeded fractional real estate is becoming so popular in Puerto Vallarta at luxury gated communities such as Garza Blanca Signature Residences is that you don’t have to stop at just one fraction. In fact, fractional property ownership is a great way to ease your way into full ownership, which is ideal for those who are not so close to retirement and want to build up fraction by fraction. At Garza Blanca Signature Residences, you can trade your deeded fraction for full ownership in the future, using equity from your initial purchase.

Still Not Convinced? Arena Blanca (La Cruz) $850K 4 bed/ 4.5 bath, Exceptional Quality, Private 31 Unit Complex

There is a reason that deeded fractional real estate is most commonly associated with the luxury markets, whether that be fractional ownership of yachts, airplanes or property. That is, many people opt for fractional purchases over full ownership in order to be able to invest in something more luxurious than could otherwise be afforded. The logic being: Why buy an average property in full that you can only use for part of the year when you could purchase something way more luxurious as a fraction? Likewise, with fractional purchases, your maintenance fees are only charged for your allotted fraction time – no extra expenses while you are not enjoying your property.

This movement focused on the aesthetic principles stemming from the rationalist movement; functional designs applied to the furniture industry. They focused on simple forms, pure colors and lines that fulfilled a specific need. They rejected everything that was superfluous. This manner in which creativity was understood made an imprint on every artist that lived under the influence of those times. Holland went through its own functionalist revolution. After World War I, two initiatives came around that strove to change the world through architecture but from different perspectives. On the one hand was the School of Amsterdam, markedly expressionist, that reacted against Berlage’s rationalism. They introduced exuberant elements to the theme of “form in repose”. On the other hand, the De Stijl movement held to a more minimalist aesthetic and applied Mondrian geometric abstraction to design. Rietveld’s Red and Blue Chair opened the way to other functionalists.

who took advantage of mechanical systems applied to standard furniture production, thereby abandoning the tradition of handcrafted pieces. His relationship with Bauhaus and his friendship with some of the most prestigious architects of the times is concrete evidence of this specific philosophy of “objects without adornments” for modern homes. Gispen’s furniture caused a furor in Holland. He pioneered chairs with no back legs and the omnipresent steel tube. Resistance and quality were the values he best appreciated as well as priority given to honesty in design. This researcher stated that “although expensive, it’s better to have an end product that’s solid and long-lasting”. This designer loved simplicity and was able to introduce his pieces into classical contemporary homes that would never go out of fashion. Ergonomics and comfort can be seen in all of his pieces; each of which has a specific function. The use of soldered frameworks instead of those screwed together offered greater stability, whereas the use of chrome and upholstery in sofas, chairs and benches gave his pieces a unique personality. Some of his identifying details are the long, stylized arm rests, the long seams down the back, the use of suspension springs and the use of extraordinary quality materials like bakelite or linoleum for the armrests and Manchester corduroy for the upholstery.

Salvaging the Genius

Gispen’s essence is still current thanks to Dutch Originals, a company that promotes Gispen’s legacy and that of other Dutch designers that were falling into oblivion. This company’s collections, produced under the appropriate licenses, have recuperated the taste for well-made furniture where beauty and function harmonize thanks to perfect geometry.

Dutch Originals’ standard piece is the Gispen 412 chair. It’s a timeless piece of immeasurable quality that symbolizes each and every premise defended by its creator. The Dutch company sells its pieces differentiating them by genre. On the one hand you have the Gispen 414, a floating, lady’s armchair without back legs, which was originally a present for Princess Juliana. It’s a fantastic piece for a girls’ bedroom. On the other, you have the Gispen 405 and 407 that are two sober gentlemen’s chairs that are best suited for office spaces. Gispen 401 is the authentic smoker’s armchair. Its design was totally revolutionary within the artistic context in which it was designed; it’s dated during the first years of the 1930’s. Its relatively low seat and reclining back were conceived for the enjoyment of tobacco, both a vice and a delight. Nowadays it has become more a chair for anecdotal reflection thanks to the current antismoking laws. If you’re looking for a good sofa, the Gispen AD will flood your living room with a cubist air. It was designed initially for the Algemeen Dagblad daily. The Gispen 404 deck chair was also born in the thirties to be used for ships traveling between Holland and the U.S. Its stainless steel framework and elastic braided rattan resist weathering and make it ideal for the outdoors. They can be chosen in natural, white or light grey colors and if you need more of a cushion, you can choose the model that has a head rest. Gispen not only designed chairs and sofas, but also mirrors, tables, coat racks and much more. One of this designer’s better known qualities is his studies related to useful illumination surrounding a domestic product. He constantly searched for improvements and stated that each space required a specific type of lamp. The GISO brand encompasses some of the most extraordinary luminous creations, like Sonneveld, Saturn or Seta.

It is a time of change in which the excess is left behind, the baroque, the gold and glitz to make the step to sleek and clean lines. Currently, we have a mix of styles and trends in which matters not the material but the sentimental.

The retro rocks It is a review of past styles mixed with current trends. A combination of classic elements with avant-garde elements: based on geometric shapes, pastel colors, shapes maintained with a touch of romanticism that complement the sober furniture of the years 40-50. It is an alternative tendency that works. The use of colors like beige and white provide light and airy spaces. The pastel shades like pink makeup, vanilla and yellow, give finesse, beauty, elegance and soften the decor. Use different textures to create reliefs, gradient colors, hexagonal shapes or combination of different types of paper with different frames.

The charm of nature The taste for natural will never be oldfashioned, this trend has a lot to do with tradition and nature, the aim is to achieve a comfortable and cozy home. ·Follow the furniture decoration and wood paneling; the difference is that we will move from a clear timber to another with more grain and dark. ·Cool colors like blue, green or gray are the latest, they bring calm and tranquility while giving breadth, but must be combined with warm colors to subtract the excess of coldness. ·The flowers are a very important decorative element. Place geraniums that give color and freshness, pretty glass jars of different sizes, fill the walls with frames; small details are fashionable, they are trend and these is what makes the difference.
