Elevators, Radical Change In Architecture
D
urante la Exposición de la Industria de Todas las Naciones, celebrada en Nueva York en 1853, Elisha Graves Otis demostró las cualidades de su freno de seguridad para ascensores . Fue este freno lo que revolucionó la arquitectura De pie sobre una plataforma elevada, este inventor y showman ordenó que la cuerda que lo sostenía fuera cortada con un hacha. Antes de que la expectante multitud alcanzara a respirar, el ascensor se paró repentinamente. Luego de ser repetida en varias ocasiones, esta demostración teatral convenció al mundo de que los ascensores eran seguros. Habían existido por lo menos desde hacía 2.000 años (Vitruvio, arquitecto romano del primer siglo, mostró un diseño realizado por Arquímedes que data de alrededor 235 a.C.), pero Otis demostró que eran seguros para su uso cotidiano.
uring the All Nations Industry Expo, held in New York in 1853, Elisha Graves Otis demonstrated the qualities of her safety brake for lifts. It was this brake that revolutionized architecture. Standing on a raised platform, this inventor and showman ordered the rope that held him to be cut with an ax. Before the expectant crowd could breathe, the elevator suddenly stopped. After being repeated on several occasions, this theatrical demonstration convinced the world that the elevators were safe. They had existed for at least 2,000 years (Vitruvius, a Roman architect of the first century, showed a design by Archimedes dating to around 235 BC), but Otis proved to be safe for everyday use.
Upwards In 1857, the first passenger lift was installed at the new Haughwout EV Building on Broadway in New York. The department store sold porcelain, crystal, silver, and candelabra, and wore its façade inspired by the one of San Marcos Library in Venice.

En cuanto al ascensor, era un lujo: el Edificio Haughwout, felizmente restaurado al día de hoy, solo tenía cinco pisos, la altura máxima típica de los edificios comerciales y residenciales antes del advenimiento del ascensor fiable del señor Otis. Eder Haughwout sabía que los clientes entrarían a su tienda solo para viajar en el ascensor. Desde entonces, el ascensor se elevó con el auge de los altos edificios que pronto hizo factibles.
As for the lift, it was a luxury: the Haughwout Building, happily restored to this day, was only five floors high, typical height of commercial and residential buildings before the advent of Mr. Otis’s reliable elevator. Eder Haughwout knew that customers would enter his shop just to travel in the elevator. Since then, the elevator has risen with the heyday of the tall buildings it soon made feasible.

Over the past 150 years, elevators have proliferated under a surprising number of forms. Although most elevators became little more than functional boxes that rise and fall on dark axes, others became spectacles in and of themselves. The elevators Otis built for the Eiffel Tower are absolutely wonderful. The elevators that climb the first two levels of the tower have two floors, outlining the great curves of the iron structure as it rises above the Mars Camp. The lifts offer amazing views not only of Paris but of the fascinating way in which Eiffel built this unprecedented tower. Otis also manufactured the 73 elevators that go up and down the Empire State Building. To get to the top of this magnificent Art Deco skyscraper you must make a change of ‘cars’. Dibujo de Da Vinci encontrado por sorpresa Da Vinci Drawing Found by Surprise
l pasado marzo un médico jubilado acudió a la casa de subastas parisina Tajan con 14 dibujos de la colección de su padre. El director del departamento de obras maestras de la casa, Thaddée Prate, destacó del conjunto la imagen de San Sebastián atado a un árbol. “Tuve la sensación de que era un interesante dibujo del siglo XVI que requería más trabajo”, confesó Prate a ‘The New York Times’sin sospechar en aquel entonces que se trataba de una obra de Leonardo da Vinci. Prate consultó con un distribuidor independiente y asesor artístico Patrick de Bayser, quien al analizar el dibujo sugirió que los trazos salieron de la mano de un zurdo y encontró dos pequeños dibujos científicos en el reverso de la hoja acompañados por inscripciones en italiano del Renacimiento. Fue entonces cuando los hombres se dieron cuenta de que la autoría podía pertenecerle a Leonardo.
La tercera opinión y la definitiva la presentó Carmen C. Bambach, conservadora de pintura italiana y española del Museo Metropolitano de Arte de Nueva York y experta en las obras de Leonardo con la que se puso en contacto Tajan. Bambach reconoció la mano del famoso pintor italiano de inmediato y estimó que el dibujo se remontaba al período entre los años 1482 y 1485, primera fase de Da Vinci en Milán, cuando pintó su primera versión de ‘La virgen de las rocas’. Tajan estima la obra en unos 15 millones de dólares y ya ha anunciado el descubrimiento en su página web. La casa de subastas confía en la opinión de Bambach y sostiene que el dibujo pertenece al grupo de los ocho San Sebastián mencionados en la colección de dibujos y escrituras de Da Vinci Códice Atlántico. Los dibujos científicos están relacionados con el estudio de la óptica.

ast March a former doctor went to the Parisian auction house “Tajan” with 14 drawings from his father’s collection. The director of the department of masterpieces of the house, Thaddée Prate, highlighted the image of San Sebastian tied to a tree. “I had the feeling that it was an interesting 16th-century drawing that required more work,” Prate told the The New York Times, not suspecting at the time that it was a work by Leonardo da Vinci. Prate consulted with an independent distributor and an art consultant Patrick de Bayser who, when analyzing the drawing, suggested that the strokes came out of the hand of a lefty and found two small scientific drawings on the back of the sheet accompanied by inscriptions in Italian Renaissance. It was then that the men realized that the authorship could belong to Leonardo.
The third and final opinion was presented by Carmen C. Bambach, curator of Italian and Spanish painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and an expert in the works of Leonardo with whom Tajan was contacted. Bambach recognized the hand of the famous Italian painter immediately and estimated that the drawing dates back to the period between 1482 and 1485, the first phase of Da Vinci in Milan, when he painted his first version of ‘The Virgin of the Rocks’. Tajan estimates the worth of the work in about 15 million dollars and has already announced the discovery on its website. The auction house relies on the opinion of Bambach and argues that the drawing belongs to the group of eight San Sebastians mentioned in the collection of drawings and writings of Da Vinci Codex Atlantic. Scientific drawings are related to the study of optics. There is no doubt that luck can be in any corner of our house, if not ask the doctor in question.
