l pasado mes de junio, el máximo encuentro anual de coleccionistas de arte contemporáneo en el mundo reunió a mas de 100.000 visitantes en Basilea. Cada año la ciudad se transforma en la meca de las ventas privadas de un mercado globalizado que no parece conocer la crisis. Esta edición 2017 concede espacio a las obras políticamente comprometidas. Si esta feria de arte contemporáneo tiene, sobre todo, la vocación de relacionar las galerías de arte más prestigiosas con sus clientes, la cita también atrae a un vasto público para admirar las grandes firmas de la escena artística. Esta edición se coloca bajo el signo de obras políticamente comprometidas. De este modo, el público descubrió la producción de la estadounidense Barbara Krugel o de la sudafricana Sue Williamson, artistas que denuncian la esclavitud y la xenofobia. Cerca de 100 000 visitantes se desplazan a Basilea, a orillas del Rin y en la frontera con Alemania y Francia, para ver las obras de unos 4 000 artistas que presentan las cerca de 300 galerías que allí participan. Artistas, galeristas, coleccionistas, curadores y otros agentes van a Basilea para ver y ser vistos. También hay unos cuantos curiosos pero, a diferencia del Salón del Automóvil de Ginebra, el público de Art Basel tiene un perfil muy definido. ast June, the largest annual gathering of contemporary art collectors in the world brought together more than 100,000 visitors in Basel. Every year the city becomes the epitome of private sales of a globalized market that does not seem to know the crisis. This 2017 edition gives space to politically committed works. If this contemporary art fair has, above all, the vocation of linking the most prestigious art galleries with their clients, the event also attracts a wide audience to admire the great signatures of the artistic scene. This edition is placed under the sign of politically committed works. In this way, the public discovered the production of the American Barbara Krugel or the South African Sue Williamson, artists that denounce the slavery and the xenophobia. About 100,000 visitors flock to Basel, aside the Rhine and on the border with Germany and France, to see the works of about 4,000 artists presenting the nearly 300 galleries participating there. Artists, gallerists, collectors, curators and other agents go to Basel to see and be seen. There are also a few curious but, unlike the Geneva Motor Show, the public of Art Basel has a very defined profile. In fact, this 48th edition proposes a second day of preview only with invitation, which means one day less for the public. On the day closing day, a brief statement proclaimed the satisfaction of “the 400 most influential and innovative galleries on the planet” and dropped record sales figures. The CONTINUES PAGE 6

El verdadero volumen de negocio, sin embargo, seguirá siendo (casi) un secreto de Estado. Y es que esta feria ofrece una especie de legitimidad suprema, según Paul-André Jaccard, director del Instituto Suizo para el Estudio del Arte de la Universidad de Lausana. “Participar en Art Basel, es llegar al escalón supremo de un mercado muy segmentado. Las galerías clasificadas en esta cumbre mundial ganan en términos de visibilidad y notoriedad, lo que incluye a los artistas a los que representan”.
Selección severa
“Art Basel es la mejor feria del mundo porque la selección es muy severa en todas las categorías, incluidas las galerías más jóvenes. Cada año debo presentar un dossier, como todos los demás, y jamás estoy segura de ser seleccionada”, declara a su vez Alice Pauli. Esta galerista de Lausana participa en Art Basel desde 1971, o sea desde la segunda edición. Hasta hoy ha conservado un estand de 80 m2, pero la competición se hace cada vez más ruda, en particular para las galerías europeas. “Art Basel ha evolucionado mucho a escala internacional, sobre todo con la llegada de los países emergentes, ya sean galeristas o coleccionistas”.
Presentarse en esta feria cuesta más de 100.000 francos suizos. Dos tercios para pagar el estand y el resto se va en seguros, transporte y alojamiento del personal. Pero lo bueno es que, en general, se logran cuadrar los números y se vuelve a casa con ganancias. Los 100.000 visitantes no participan de los eventos reservados a la élite de grandes coleccionistas, pero de todas maneras encuentran su hueco en este templo del consumo y la consagración. Basilea puede jactarse de ofrecer una densidad única de taste makers (hacedores de gustos): personalidades que marcan las tendencias, designan a los artistas y orientan el gusto de los grandes coleccionistas. Estos son a su vez imitados luego por los pequeños coleccionistas, que a menudo carecen de referencias sólidas. Pero este año, los coleccionistas fueron elegidos a dedo. Severe selection “Art Basel is the best art fair in the world
because the selection is very severe in all categories, including the younger galleries. Every year I have to submit a dossier, just like everyone else, and I’m never sure I’ll be selected, “says Alice Pauli. This gallery owner from Lausanne has participated in Art Basel since 1971, that is since the second edition. Until today it has conserved a stand of 80 m2, but the competition becomes more and more rude, in particular for the European galleries. “Art Basel has evolved a lot internationally, especially with the arrival of emerging countries, whether gallery owners or collectors.” Attending this fair costs more than 100,000 Swiss francs. Two-thirds to pay for the stand and the rest goes on insurance, transportation and staff accommodation. But the good thing is that, in general, they manage to square the numbers and return home with profits. The 100,000 visitors do not participate in the events reserved for the elite of great collectors, but nevertheless find their place in this temple of consumption and consecration. Basel can boast for offering a unique density of taste makers: personalities that mark trends, designate artists and guide the taste of great collectors. These are in turn then imitated by small collectors, who often lack solid references. But this year, collectors were handpicked. Al poder le gusta mirarse en un espejo, y busca de forma natural posicionarse y controlar el arte contemporáneo”. ¿El artista es un simple producto? “El arte es una historia de egos, en la cual cada uno quiere ser el mejor”, responde Ben Vautier. “El artista guarda su independencia porque siempre intentará transgredir las normas. Se dice a sí mismo: “Muy bien, obedezco al poder y hago publicidad para Coca-Cola, pero la desvío y le doy otros tonos”. ¿Acaso Andy Warhol no tenía muchos dólares?”. El arte contemporáneo internacional no conoce la crisis, y Art Basel se mantiene como referencia, hasta el extremo de exportar su modelo a Miami y Hong Kong. Esta red de filiales es a imagen y semejanza de la aldea global. El mercado se inserta dentro del mismo funcionamiento de interdependencia económica entre países dada la abolición de fronteras. Los artistas se globalizan, así como las
ferias, lugares donde se cruzan las grandes fortunas. Y a ellas se suma ahora la emergencia de los nuevos mercados (Asia, América Latina). Las ferias deben, por tanto, ir al encuentro de nuevos artistas y de unos coleccionistas que se internacionalizan.
Art Basel
Fundada en 1970 por un grupo de galeristas capitaneados por Ernst Beyeler, la feria ofrece un lugar a todas las formas artísticas: pintura, dibujo, edición, escultura, instalación, foto, performance y videoarte. Desde 1900 hasta nuestros días. La 48ª edición tuvo lugar del 15 al 18 de junio de 2017. Se presentan unas 230 galerías, de 36 países, sobre un total de 1.000 candidatas.

He says to himself, “Very well, I obey the power and advertise for Coca-Cola, but I detour it and give it other tones.” Did not Andy Warhol have many dollars? “ Contemporary international art does not know the crisis, and Art Basel remains as a reference, to the extreme of exporting its model to Miami and Hong Kong. This network of affiliates is in the image and likeness of the global village. The market is embedded within the same functioning of economic interdependence between countries given the abolition of borders. Artists are globalized as well as fairs, places where great fortunes cross. And to them is added the emergence of new markets (Asia, Latin America). The fairs must, therefore, go to the meeting of new artists and collectors who are internationalized.

Los propietarios se inspiraron en el el diseño de su antigua villa en Cinque Terra y la costa de Amalfi de Italia. Mikel: Me gusta cómo construyeron las columnas y las fuentes de cantera. Carl: Muy impactante, y contrataron a un artesano de Guadalajara que hizo todo el trabajo cantera personalizado que ves.
Mikel: Look at the size of the entrance and courtyard. It feels very Greek or Italian inspired. Carl: Yes, that’s right. The owners were inspired to have the villa design based on their time spent in Cinque Terra and the Amalfi coast of Italy. Mikel: I like how they constructed the columns and fountains out of cantera. Carl: Very impactful, and they hired an artisan from Guadalajara who did all of the custom cantera work you see. CONTINUA PÁGINA 42
Mikel: Los arcos de ladrillo y vigas de techo expuestos son muy dramáticos y bien ejecutados. Carl: Los propietarios deliberadamente intentaron mezclar diferentes materiales de diseño para que la casa se sintiera única. Mikel: También estoy notando un montón de muebles de madera personalizados alrededor de la casa. Carl: Sí, gran parte del mobiliario fue hecho en el estado mexicano de Michocan, en un pueblo llamado Tzintzuntzan - que es famoso por su carpintería. Mikel: The exposed brick archways and ceiling beams are very dramatic and nicely executed. Carl: The owners deliberately intended to mix different design materials so that the home would feel unique. Mikel: I’m also noticing a lot of custom wood furniture sprinkled around the home. Carl: Yes, much of the furniture was made in the Mexican state of Michocan, in a town called Tzintzuntzan – which is renown for it’s woodwork. CONTINUES PAGE 42

There are plenty of dramatic entrances and common areas through out the home. Mikel: This is one of my favorite areas so far. It would be the perfect environment for a wine cellar.
