fter the damage caused by the earthquake of September 19 to the Ministry of Communications and Transportation, the 15 murals that decorate the complex of buildings are in perfect condition and the works of José Chávez Morado, Juan O’Gorman, Arturo Estrada and Rosendo Soto are waiting to be relocated. Más de 60 años y dos destructivos terremotos después, los murales gigantes que recubren la fachada de la sede de la Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transporte en Ciudad de México permanecen intactos. El edificio, una mole de 6.000 metros cuadrados, ha quedado sin embargo severamente dañado con el último sismo. El Gobierno se plantea incluso su demolición, abriendo otro interrogante: ¿cómo desmontar los murales de O’Gorman? Así, las obras hechas en una técnica conocida como mosaico mexicano, que consiste en recubrir superficies con piedras naturales creando mosaicos, y de la cual podemos encontrar notables ejemplos hechos por Diego Rivera en el Teatro de los Insurgentes o la residencia de Dolores Olmedo, cubren las diferentes tapas etapas historias del país. La primera vez que O’Gorman experimentó con esta técnica fue precisamente en colaboración con Diego Rivera, el fac-

tótum del muralismo posrevolucionario. The first time O’Gorman experimented with this technique was precisely in collaboration with Diego Rivera, the factotum of postrevolutionary muralism. O’Gorman, who was considered to be the precursor of functionalist architecture in Latin America, had designed the iconic studio houses of Rivera and Frida, the Red House and the Blue House in the 1930s. Terminada en 1952 es una de las joyas de la arquitectura moderna del país y gran recipiente de muralismo, declarada Patrimonio cultural de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 2007. La idea del concepto arquitectónico de la Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes fue concebida por Carlos Lazo, un referente indiscutible de la arquitectura y el urbanismo de la Ciudad de México, quien dio solución a la problemática de descentralizar la ubicación de la dependencia que antes se localizaba en la calle de Tacuba, en el Centro Histórico, en el inmueble que es hoy el Museo Nacional de Arte. Los murales y las esculturas deberán ser trasladados a una nueva ubicación que no afecte su composición original. Para mala fortuna su restauración, que se encontraba próxima, fue suspendida y ahora buscan un nuevo hogar. El Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) y la Secretaría de Cultura ya están al tanto para la operación de salvamento de los murales. “Desmontarlos no será tarea fácil, pero es viable”, apunta Alejandro Her-

nández, arquitecto y editor de la revista Arquine. Para preservar la obra del agua, el sol y la lluvia, los materiales de O’Gorman –arquitecto de formación y gran exponente de la segunda ola de muralismo mexicano– eran rocas, minerales de colores que iba recolectando por toda la República. Primero trasladaba el diseño del dibujo al suelo. Sobre cuadrados de malla metálica aplicaba una mezcla de cemento donde incrustaba las piedras. Armado el panel, se montaba con anclajes metálicos sobre la fachada. Desmontar los centenares de metros cuadrados que cubren la fachada requerirá de un cuidadoso trabajo.

Guests will not need a ticket to visit LEGO Square, play on the terraces, explore the LEGO Store and treat themselves to extraordinary culinary experiences at one of the three restaurantts.
