Where have all the workers gone? I was interviewing a shop owner and he mentioned that the service he was getting from his suppliers has gone downhill, though he says that he was aware of the struggles nearly every company is having in retaining staff.

We all see this. I was picking up a prescription at the drug store recently. On the drive up window, there was a sign posted stating, “Due to staffing issues, drive up service is not available”. When I went inside to pick up the prescription (I had already received a text that it was ready), the pharmacist said he had nobody available to fill prescriptions, and he didn’t know when my prescription would be ready. As I waited in line, many disgruntled customers were talking about switching to a new pharmacy.

Another example is the IRS letter I received telling me they hadn’t received some paperwork and that I had a penalty fine. When I attempted to call the IRS to reconcile the issue, I was told that the lines were busy and to call at another time. (Thankfully, my CPA got it fixed). Well, IRS, good luck finding those 87,000 new hires!

This isn’t an isolated event, as we all know. The pandemic caused a major disruption in America’s labor force—something many have termed The Great Resignation. In 2021, more than 47 million workers quit their jobs, many of whom were in search of an improved work-life balance and flexibility, increased compensation, and a strong company culture. Others took time off due to generous stimulus funds, and many haven’t yet returned.

But a closer look at what has happened to the labor force can be better described as ‘The Great Reshuffle’ because hiring rates have outpaced quit rates since November of 2020. So, many workers are quitting their jobs—but many are getting re-hired elsewhere.

The manufacturing industry lost roughly 1.4 million jobs at the onset of the pandemic. Since then, the industry has struggled to hire entry level and skilled workers alike.

We can’t modify what is happening with the overall labor pool, but as business owners and managers in manufacturing, we can proactively do everything we can to retain our current workers and entice new hires. Successful businesses are embracing remote or hybrid work models and flexible scheduling.

Businesses can increase their hiring pools by removing barriers to entering the workforce by expanding childcare access and “second-chance” hiring, and provide opportunities for new and existing staff to be upskilled and reskilled on the job. I am a believer in part-time work opportunities, where older skilled workers may wish to remain in the workforce, just with less hours. I am also a believer in removing the college degree required, as there are many superior employees with skills acquired over the years who lack a formal degree. I have met with employers who are hiring formerly incarcerated workers, and are having success.

Of course, you must offer competitive benefits and make your work environment one where, as one of my customers said, “Employees don’t dread Sunday night thinking about going to work the next day.” Your workforce is without doubt, one of your most important competitive advantages. I encourage you to do all that you can to retain your employees and have them recommend to others what a great place to work your company is. Melbourne, Florida-based L3Harris Technologies Inc. will pay $4.7 billion to buy Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc. off of public markets, reports Isabel Sami of L.A. Business First.

By acquiring the El Segundo, California-based company, L3Harris would secure a stronger foothold in the aerospace and defense sector. But L3Harris wouldn’t be the first company to try; Lockheed Martin tried to buy Aerojet for $4.4 billion in a deal meant to close earlier this year, but the Federal Trade Commission sued to block the deal in January. The Lockheed deal would have given the company the ability to deny competitors components needed to build competing rockets,

Industrial Production Returns to Growth After February’s Storms Subside

The Phoenix-based zero-emissions vehicle maker said it submitted an application in May for a loan guarantee under the Innovative Clean Energy projects program with the U.S. Department of Energy Loan Program Office, and now the application has moved to the second part of the process. The money would be used to build Nikola’s hydrogen production hub on nearly 1,000 acres of land in Buckeye that the company quietly acquired for $16.5 million in September. Nikola (Nasdaq: NKLA) soon after that confirmed that it planned to build a hydrogen production facility there.

The Federal Reserve reported that industrial production in March rose 1.4%, returning to growth after an unseasonably stormy February knocked it down 2.6%. The report shows total industrial production rose 2.5% at an annualized rate during the first quarter of 2021 despite the losses endured in February by manufacturing, mining, and utilities companies.

The site is located just south of the Arizona Department of Corrections Lewis Prison and west of State Route 85 at 28702 W. Patterson Road in south Buckeye.

Energy, Carey Mendes said in a statement. “What’s more, it is expected to support clean hydrogen use in additional applications such as industrial, residential, and commercial heating, as well as for decarbonizing natural gas and power generation.”

Motor vehicles and parts production, which fell 10% in February, rose 2.8% in March but remained depressed by a persistent shortage of semiconductors. Most durable goods indexes rose between 2% to 3%.

Assuming the loan funding is approved, the company said construction of the facility’s first phase is expected to be completed in 2024.

That hydrogen hub is part of Nikola’s plan to develop an infrastructure system that will include fueling stations for its heavy duty fuel cell electric vehicles in California and elsewhere in the Southwest.

The industrial production gauge includes productivity in three sectors: manufacturing, mining, and utilities. Manufacturing production (which excludes mining and utilities output) rose 2.7% in March after falling 3.7% the month before. Mining production improved 2.7%, while utility output fell 11.4% thanks to unseasonably warm March temperatures. Manufacturing output rose 1.9% at an annualized rate.

Nikola said its access to the federal funds is wholly dependent on the results of a Department of Energy review and evaluation of the company’s Part II application and its determination of whether to proceed. The funds will be used to build the facility, which could produce at first 30 metric tons per day before ramping up to 150 metric tons and potentially expand beyond that.

In nondurable manufacturing, the index for the chemicals industry rose 4.1%, and petroleum and coal products rose 5.7%, although neither sector has fully recovered from severe weather damage—the Federal Reserve noted that some chemicals factories remain offline thanks to damage sustained from February’s winter storms. Most nondurable goods indexes rose between 0.9% and 3.0%.

Businesses are using contractors more now than any point in recent memory, and a tight labor market means that’s likely to continue — despite increased scrutiny from regulators.

Almost all market groups saw improvements in March, despite lingering challenges. The Federal Reserve’s index for other manufacturing, which includes publishing and logging, remained the same, but durable goods and nondurable goods indexes rose 3.0% and 2.6%, respectively.

over the last two years, and the ratio of contractors to full-time employees has grown 63% since 2019 — from about one in 10 to nearly one in five.

U.S.-based contractors are most likely to be doing consulting work or non-technical creative work, while just 8% are doing technical work. International contractors are most likely to be doing administrative or routine work.

Meanwhile U.S.-based contractors are on the hunt for flexibility, with 50% of them saying they wanted location and hour flexibility, while 32% said they wanted to choose what they worked on. Just 16% said they were contracting because they couldn’t find a full-time job.

About 27% already have a full-time job in addition to their contracting work, and many work just 10 hours a week or less contracting for another company, according to Gusto.

“Workers really are demanding a lot more autonomy or control over when and where and how and in what ways they work,” Wilkie said.

She said the contracting survey shows the pandemic pushed people to re-arrange their lives, whether it was for flexibility, or to learn new skills or because they opted out of full-time employment in favor of caretaking or childcare.

Most of these contractors could not be lured back to traditional employment either, with 67% saying they would rather stay as contractors than traditional employees.

“What I do think is true is that as remote work expands and as our ability to break up

work and send it to other places internationally. I think we will see tasks, not necessarily jobs, being sent to places being done at their highest value for lowest cost,” Wilkie said. “I do think we can expect to see companies looking for ways to do some of these tasks across time zones or countries. Businesses are very cost-conscious.”

Federal regulators are planning to step up enforcement of independent contractor guidelines for employers, with a proposed rule from the Department of Labor in the works.

More Than 500,000 Jobs Added Under Governor Ducey

It’s official. Arizona has added more than half a million private sector jobs under Governor Doug Ducey, according to the latest employment report released by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

Since January 2015, 500,200 private sector jobs have been added, placing Arizona in the top tier of states for job growth over the past eight years. Arizona ranks sixth for the total number of jobs added and fourth among all states for employment rate of growth.

“When I took office, our economy was broken, and fixing it was a top priority,” said Governor Ducey. “The engine of our economic growth has always been our people. Today, Arizonans have access to abundant jobs as well as the opportunity to work in good-paying industries with the potential for advancement. With this kind of momentum and our incredible talent, Arizona is unstoppable.”

The milestone coincides with a surge in Arizona’s manufacturing industry, with high-tech industries such as semiconductors, batteries, and electric vehicles seeing substantial growth. Over the last year, Arizona has added more than 15,000 manufacturing jobs, representing the fastest growth rate in the country.

“The Governor’s tenure has been transformational for our state,” said Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority. “With his leadership, the right business environment, and a thriving innovation ecosystem, Arizona has become an international hub of advanced manufacturing, bringing new opportunities for small businesses and rural communities across our state.”

More jobs has meant more opportunity in Arizona. Since 2015, the number of people in poverty in Arizona has decreased by over 220,000 individuals – the fastest decline in the nation.

Arizona has seen a cascade of major jobs announcements recently. Recently, TSMC announced an expansion of its Arizona operations to two chip factories, representing $40 billion in total investment and 4,500 jobs.

In Tucson last month, American Battery Factory announced a $1.2 billion lithium ion battery factory, with the potential to create 1,000 jobs. The next day, Sion Power, a leading technology developer of next-generation batteries for electric vehicles, announced an expansion of its Tucson operations, creating 150 jobs.

Over the last year, more than a dozen semiconductor technology companies have announced expansions in Arizona, including manufacturers and suppliers.

Small businesses are thriving, too. Since 2015, Arizona has added more than 20,000 business enterprises. Similarly, a study released last week ranks Arizona as the fifth-best state to hire workers. The report from Career Cloud notes that Arizona, “offers employers a large, well-educated workforce and pro-business regulatory environment.”

First Light F-35 Helmet Test A Success

The first test of a new, lightweight F-35 helmet was successful, according to the prog ram office, a promising sign that the Pentagon can qualify and implement all three fixes to the jet’s escape system by the end of the year.

Once the full gamut of testing is completed, hopefully by the end of the summer, the JPO can beg in implementing the two modifications to the ejection seat and issuing the new Generation III “light” helmet to the fleet, he said

Although the test was the fir st test of the new helmet, the JPO, Loc kheed Mar tin and seat-maker Mar tin Baker have conducted at least seven other tests with the latest version of the seat, which is equipped with two modifications designed to reduce r isk to pilots.The fixes to the ejection seat itself include a switch for lightweight pilots that will delay deployment of the main parachute, and a “head support panel,” a fabric panel sewn between the parachute r isers that will protect the pilot’s head from moving backward dur ing the parachute opening.

After a search across about a dozen states over the course of a year, Utah-based startup American Battery Factory picked Arizona for its first U.S. facility and headquarters this year.

Nammo Defense Systems Inc., Mesa, Arizona, was awarded a $498,092,926 firm-fixed-price contract for the full rate production of M72 Light Assault Weapon variants and components for shoulderlaunched munitions training systems. Bids were solicited via the internet with one received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of Dec. 19, 2026. U.S. Army Contracting Command, Newark, New Jersey, is the contracting activity.

ABF, which was incubated from Lion Energy in 2021, is planning to build a $1.2 billion lithium-iron phosphate battery manufacturing plant that will total 2 million square feet in the Tucson metro.

Raytheon Co., Tucson, Arizona, is awarded a $55,121,826 costplus-fixed-fee modification to a previously awarded contract (N0002421C5434) for engineering and technical services in support of the Evolved Seasparrow Missile and NATO Seasparrow Missile Sys-tems programs. This contract combines purchases for the U.S. govern-ment (99%); and the governments of Japan and United Arab Emirates (1%) under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The new factory, expected to have a $3 billion economic impact to the state, will create an initial 300 jobs for three shifts and scale up to 1,000 employees at full build-out with average annual wages of $65,000.

The initial phase of the company’s facility will produce 3 gigawatt hours annually and eventually scale up to 16 gigawatt-hours annually. It will be located at the county’s Aerospace and Research Campus close to Tucson International Airport and developed in three phases.

Lithium-iron phosphate battery cells have a higher life cycle and more thermal stability than lithiumion batteries, which contain materials such as nickel and cobalt that are not always ethically sourced, said ABF. The phosphate battery cells can be used for energy storage; specific types of electric vehicles including buses, trucks and mining equipment; and military and government applications.

The Boeing Co., Mesa, Arizona, was awarded a $239,590,243 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for the Apache Improved Turbine Engine Inte-gration Phase II. Paul Charles, president and CEO of ABF, said that the initial search for their new facility started about a year ago. While they wanted to stay in Utah, where Lion Energy is located, Charles said it was difficult to source enough power for their proposed factory.“We

were actually encouraged to come down [to Arizona] by certain officials in Utah, and we’re very happy to be here,” he told the Phoenix Business Journal.

The company said its initial search involved about 12 states with several sites considered in each state. ABF also looked at the greater Phoenix area, but said it chose Tucson due to the local community, education opportunities and affordable housing and high quality of life, among other reasons.

Charles added that Pima Community College will also help support and train a workforce for the company through its new 100,000-square-foot education facility, a center of excellence for advanced manufacturing.

“It’s exactly what we want to have because our workforce will be trained in incredibly automated robotic machinery that is quite unique here in the U.S.,” he said. “For a school to teach equipment that will revolutionize the manufacturing process of batteries here in the U.S., is a unique opportunity for them, but mainly or us.”

The Pima County Board of Supervisors approved a lease and purchase agreement with the company, while Gov. Doug Ducey also gave his support for the company’s plans.

“This transformational investment proves once again that Arizona is the premier destination for emerging technologies. The state-of-the-art factory will produce battery cells critical to our energy future right here in Tucson,” Ducey said in a statement.

The Arizona Commerce Authority said ABF is eligible for $22 million in incentives

through the agency’s qualified facilities tax credit and competes fund. These financial programs are based on jobs and wages met, as well as an application that would have to be filed.

In addition, new jobs at the facility will include operations, production, scientific and technology jobs such as research and development, automation and robotics, executive and headquarter roles. ABF’s capital partners is New York-based Guggenheim Partners.

Through the Pima County agreement, ABF will initially lease 70 acres for $455,000 in the first year and increase to $502,250 by the fifth year. ABF can also purchase the overall 267 acres from the county at the end of two years of leasing for $20.9 million. By Audrey Jensen - Reporter

Tempe-based First Solar building a $1.1B manufacturing plant in Alabama

Alabama will soon welcome an Arizona green manufacturer that will invest more than $1.1 billion bringing a facility to the state.

Tempe-headquartered First Solar Inc. plans to establish a photovoltaic (PV) solar module manufacturing facility in Lawrence County, creating more than 700 new jobs in North Alabama. According to a release, the factory is part of the company’s previously announced investment in scaling its American manufacturing footprint to more than 10 gigawatts by 2025.

First Solar CEO Mark Widmar first announced in August that the company would spend $1 billion to build a new factory, its fourth, somewhere in the Southeast, but the company would not say at the time which states it was considering. Widmar said at that time that recently passed federal legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, encouraged the company to make such a big investment. The Inflation Reduction Act is a wide-ranging new set of laws that includes $369 billion for climate and energy provisions and incentives for companies to build in the U.S.

The fully vertically integrated facility in Lawrence County, Alabama’s Mallard Fox West Industrial Complex has a planned annual capacity of 3.5 gigawatts.

The Alabama facility is expected to advance a strategic push by the company to scale its U.S. manufacturing base in support of the effort to decarbonize the American economy and achieve self-sufficiency in reliable and competitive renewable energy technologies.

“This facility, along with its sister factories in Ohio, will form part of the industrial foundation that helps ensure this transition is powered by American innovation and ingenuity,” Widmar said. “Our commitment to responsible solar includes operating facilities that are among the cleanest, safest and most diverse in the country, and we’re pleased to bring our model of responsible solar manufacturing to Alabama. We are proud of the role that this facility will play in creating stable, good-paying manufacturing jobs in the state, demonstrating the economic and social value that clean energy can deliver.”

New Mexicans to Know: Tony Kocurek has his eye on making indoor air quality better

In the midst of a pandemic, when nearly every facet of life slowed considerably, Tony Kocurek and Energy Balance & Integration LLC remained busy.The Albuquerque-based

co mpany specializes in commercial testing and balancing of HVAC systems — especially at medical facilities. But the Covid-19 pandemic took the subject of indoor air quality from a discussion among specialized companies to the front of mind for the general public.

“Indoor air quality has always been a big issue and it’s always been something that somebody talked about,” said Kocurek, the owner of Energy Balance & Integration. “But really, that’s all they did was talk about it.”Now, Kocurek said his company and many others are leading efforts to innovate and create standards around air quality.

And in September, Kocurek found himself on a larger platform from which to work.The New Mexico native was chosen to serve as the next president of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association.

The international trade association represents more than 3,500 contributing contractor fi rms and promotes quality and excellence within the sheet metal and air conditioning industry.“You know, a couple of years from now, I’d like to be able to look back at this presidency and see that I did something,” Kocurek said.

Relocates

Headquarters From Canada To Mesa

It was once planned to be just the future manufacturer of its single-seat, threewheel Solo model, but ElectraMeccanica announced it would make the new 235,000-squarefoot Mesa assembly and technical facility its new corporate headquarters.

ElectraMeccanica Chief Revenue Officer Kim Brink said the decision to relocate the company’s headquarters from British Columbia, Canada to Mesa was made earlier this month. “I think this was a very natural place for us to come. This is the center of gravity of the electric vehicle market,” Brink said.

ElectraMeccanica announced the new headquarters as it held a commissioning of its plant. The commissioning allows for the plant to ramp up to full production, which

will allow all of the manufacturing to take place in Mesa. Currently, ElectraMeccanica imports the electric Solo models from China and the team at the Mesa plant fi xes any issues with the vehicles and prepares them for sale to customers in California and Arizona. ElectraMeccanica expects the full manufacturing of the Solo models to get going in Mesa by the end of 2023.

The company sells the three-wheel Solo and Solo Cargo for $18,500 and $24,500, respectively. Both have a range of 100 miles at full charge.

ElectraMeccanica currently has just over 70 employees but expects to bring on up to 500 employees. The facility will have the capacity to manufacture 20,000 vehicles per year and could serve as a contract manufacturer for other electric vehicle makers.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, Mesa Mayor John Giles and Docherty each spoke at ElectraMeccanica’s plant commissioning.

“Arizona is a driving force of innovation, and today’s ribbon cutting for ElectraMeccanica is further proof of that,” Ducey said. “We are proud of these one-ofa-kind vehicles that will be made in Mesa, bolstering Arizona’s robust manufacturing industry. BlueHalo Opens First Dedicated Manufacturing Facility In Albuquerque

Flanked by scores of employees and several VIPs, BlueHalo’s leadership on celebrated the official opening of the company’s first facility focused on manufacturing.Located within the Sandia Science and Technology Park, BlueHalo will manufacture phased array antennas out of the 73,000-squarefoot facility. The new facility also provides additional space for research and development and offices, a sensitive compartmented information facility and 37,000 square feet of high-bay manufacturing space.

The company currently employs 300 people across its campus in Sandia Science and Technology Park. The new facility will allow BlueHalo to hire 70 more people. Those new positions will pay an average salary of $90,000.

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) spoke prior to the ribbon cutting. He recounted working on early iterations of directed energy technology at what is now known as the Air Force Research Laboratory, just to the west of the Sandia Science and Technology Park.

BlueHalo, an Arlington, Virginia-based engineering and defense company, now occupies about 200,000 square feet across three properties in Albuquerque’s Sandia Science and Technology Park. BlueHalo’s expansion comes after the company received approval for a $16 million industrial revenue bond and $2.5 million in Local Economic Development Act incentives from the City of Albuquerque and State of New Mexico. The money helped renovate BlueHalo’s new manufacturing facility.

Originally, BlueHalo had intended to build a 200,000-square-foot facility at the planned Max Q development. It later withdrew those plans and turned its attention to the Gibson Boulevard location, which is part of the Sandia Science and Technology Park.

The plant will be able to produce up to six spaceships per year, which will be transported by Virgin Galactic motherships to Spaceport America, NM, for flight test and commercial operation.“Our spaceship final assembly factory is key to accelerating the production of our Delta fleet, enabling a rapid increase in flight capacity that will drive our revenue growth,” says Michael Colglazier, CEO of Virgin Galactic.

In September, Northrop Grumman opened its Maryland Space Assembly and Test 2 facility at its Baltimore campus. “The new digitally integrated MSAT2 grows our advanced manufacturing, assembly and test capabilities as we continue to deliver end-toend space solutions with speed and agility,” says Scott Lee, vice president and general manager for payload and ground systems

at Northrop Grumman.

Pinnacle Aerospace LLC, a manufacturer of defense and aerospace products, is investing $14.7 million in a new facility in Wellington, KS, that will create 155 new jobs. The new operation will assemble complex hard-metal components for commercial, military and space applications.

Aerospace companies aren’t the only manufacturers investing in U.S. production. Other industries are boosting domestic capacity, as well, spurred by growing demand for green energy and transportation.

Heliogen, a concentrated solar power energy provider, will develop, assemble and test heliostats and other components at a new assembly plant in Long Beach, CA. Heliogen’s ICARUS system of AI-backed robots will autonomously deliver the heliostats from the plant to the field and install them with accuracy of ±2 centimeters.

Automakers are accelerating investment in electric vehicle and battery cell manufacturing as the industry looks to expand the domestic supply chain. Investments planned for lithium-ion battery factories now exceed

$40 billion, creating a “gigafactory boom,” according to Michael D. Plante, senior research economist and advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

In 2022, automakers announced investments of $13 billion in U.S. EV manufacturing (three times what the industry spent in 2020) and $24 billion in batteries (28 times more than the industry invested in 2020). The Alliance for Automotive Innovation reports that domestic battery manufacturing capacity could increase by 333 percent from 2020 to 2025.

General Motors’ Factory Zero, formerly known as DetroitHamtramck, reopened in 2021 following a $2.2 billion investment to shift to EV production. Factory Zero is GM’s first fully dedicated EV assembly plant and in 2022 it also began to assemble Ultium battery cells. The facility employs 710 workers.

Ford Motor Co. announced it will invest $3.7 billion in assembly plants in Michigan, Ohio and Missouri and create 6,200 jobs.

Honda and battery maker LG Energy Solution will spend $4.4 billion to build a battery assembly plant in the U.S. “Aligned with our long-standing commitment to build products close to the customer, Honda is committed to the local procurement of EV batteries, which is a critical component of EVs,” says Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe.

Sunlight Batteries USA is investing $40 million in a new plant in

Greensboro, NC. They will use robot-assisted systems to assemble lithium-ion batteries.

Automation is a common thread in all these projects. Automation increases quality and productivity, enabling manufacturers to produce more with less. Many complex assemblies that could previously only be done by hand can now be achieved with intelligent automation, such as robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

However, successful automation projects don’t happen by accident. Engineers must “think more strategically— take a more balanced approach—to designing not just products. but also the overall manufacturing ecosystem—factories, equipment and people—that needs to support it,” says Caroline Pan, marketing officer at Bright Machines, an automation technology supplier.Companies that are considering automation to reduce costs for reshoring should consider reskilling and up-skilling their workforce.

Why Does Big O Metals Exist?

In Simon Sinek’s book, “Start with Why”, he states that all organizations know what they do, some know how they do it, but few know why they do it. He goes on to explain that most companies focus on the what and the how because these objectives are typically clear and easily defi nable but determining the why takes more effort and therefore often goes unaddressed.

2023 Economic Outlook Forecasts 4.2% Expansion in Equipment and Software Investment and 0.9% GDP Growth Next Year Amid Mild U.S. Recession

In what is likely to be a more challenging year for both the economy and the equipment finance industry, the 2023 forecast for equipment and software investment growth is 4.2%, according to the 2023 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook. The report released by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation also forecasts sluggish U.S. GDP growth of 0.9% (annualized) due to a mild recession that is expected

to begin midway through the year. The Foundation’s report is focused on the $1.16 trillion equipment leasing and finance industry and highlights key trends in equipment investment, placing them in the context of the broader U.S. economic climate.

Nancy Pistorio, President of Madison Capital LLC, said, “Equipment investment, the lifeblood of the equipment finance industry, has maintained steady growth since the onset of the pandemic. Despite higher interest rates, inflation and expectations of a downturn in 2023, the report indicates that a ‘soft landing’ in which the economy avoids recession is still possible. In addition, there are several factors that may make the looming downturn less severe for our industry than previous recessions, including pro-industrial legislation, equipment order backlogs, and reshoring trends.”Highlights from the 2023 Outlook include:

Equipment and software investment growth boomed in the second half of 2022 with nearly 12% annualized growth in Q3, providing a solid jumping-off point for 2023. However, rising interest rates are expected to weigh on investment growth next year.

The manufacturing sector continues to outperform

expectations given rising interest rates and the global economic slowdown. Although activity appears likely to slow in 2023 given expectations for a recession, recent proindustrial legislation and a push for supply chain re-shoring should give the sector a boost.

Monetary policy is among the biggest questions facing the equipment finance industry in 2023. The Fed has hinted at the slowing down of interest rate hikes, while stressing it is committed to reining in inflation. Interest rate levels are expected to rise above 5% next year.

KLK Precision Machining Expands With New 50,000 Sq. Ft. Facility And Retains Their Existing Facility For New Product Introduction (NPI) and Fabrication

Lee DuVall’s grandfather Bob Wilkinson launched the family business more than ½ century ago, in 1967, and today, he is the 3rd generation family member running the business. And if square footage is an indicator of growth (It is), KLK epitomizes this. From its move from a 20,000 sq. ft. facility in 2010 to 33,000 sq. ft., and then just this past July it retained its owned 33,000 sq. ft. facility and built a state of the art 50,000 sq. ft. facility. Lee adds, “Our machine tool growth has been aggressive, also, from 2016 with 6 machines to 40 today.”

KLK Precision’s customers are largely in the semiconductor industry, and in their new facility, the company has a class 10,000 clean room. It is in this room where KLK builds robotic transfer arms for wafer handling. Lee says the company has been supporting the semiconductor industry for decades, and their biggest customer in the industry has been with them since the 1970s. “To help our long term customers, we maintain inventory or ‘safety stock’ so that we can meet short lead times our customers sometimes require”, Lee says. Though KLK’s primary semiconductor customers are located in Arizona, Lee says that the majority of KLK’s parts ship overseas, to Singapore and Malaysia.

KLK’s customer support for its long term customers is so outstanding that it opened a satellite shop in 2000 strategically located within miles of 2 Intel locations, so that Intel employees could get repairs done on their fab equipment immediately.

As an AS9100 certified company since 2016, the company can and does support customers outside of the semiconductor industry. They also manufacture parts for customers in the aerospace, defense and commercial industries, and they can provide anything from prototypes to large production runs.

Lee, a Marine Corp veteran, says, “When we made the decision to build out a 50,000 new facility in Chandler, we considered selling our existing plant in Phoenix. Eventually, we decided that retaining the facility and providing a dedicated space for new product introduction would be extremely beneficial for our customers who need quick turns for prototype and R&D products.” He added, “When we retain materials for known projects, our customers allow us to eliminate special processing for these R&D

parts, and we can minimize cleaning processes, using our in-house citric passivation, so that we can typically meet a 2 week turnaround.” In addition to NPI, the Phoenix facility houses the company’s sheet metal/fabrication department, and it is run by Lee’s cousin James Wilkinson.

Today, the AS9100 certified company offers its customers precision machining (3, 4 & 5 axis), sheet metal fabrication, orbital, TIG and MIG welding, and electromechanical subassembly. Their parts can be as small as a Hastelloy pin 1/16” in diameter and 3/8” long and they can be as large as a 48” wide by 72” long and 2” thick bulkhead panel. Lee says, “The bulkhead panel was done on our Haas GR 510 gantry router, and we took the aluminum piece down from its initial 650 lbs. to 52 lbs. completed.”

KLK is clearly a family oriented business. Not only was it founded by Lee’s grandfather, Bob Wilkinson, then owned and operated by his father Larry, and now run by Lee, but Lee says there are 9 DuVall/Wilkinson family members working at the company today, including Lee’s 2 adult daughters. Also, many of their employees, including their longest tenured employee, Pedro, with 40 years employed

by KLK, have over the years brought many family members into the business. They wouldn’t do so if KLK wasn’t a great shop to work, one which values its employees.

Lee says, “We are almost exclusively a Haas shop, and have been for many years. The Ellison team that carries the Haas line in Arizona has been very good to us. We have 2 Business Managers from Ellison since we have operations in Phoenix and in Chandler. For Phoenix, it’s Chris Hansen and for Chandler, its Alex Anderson. Both Chris and Alex are extremely knowledgeable about their machines, and they have a really good understanding of our industry, as degreed engineers.” He adds, “Not only are they both extremely knowledgeable, but they are both very professional and a pleasure to work with.”

He added, “We like the Haas machines and continue to purchase them from Ellison Machinery for a number of reasons:

• They are a very good value for the money and they do a good job with our parts; we even machine a number of titanium parts on them.

• We like that our machines have a common control so that it is easy for our guys to go from one machine to another.

• They last. We have 3 or 4 Haas machines that are at least a decade old and still run great.

• Ellison Machinery treats us very well and over the years their sales and service support has been outstanding.”

KLK is adding to their Haas portfolio of machines with another 5 axis UMC-750 planned for the Chandler campus and a Haas VF-2SSYT planned for their Phoenix NPI operations. They are also beginning their foray into automation with their purchase of a 2 station pallet changer, which they will retrofit on one of their Haas VF-4SS (Super Speed) vertical mills. Lee says, “To give you an idea of Alex’s integrity, I was toying with the idea of buying a horizontal mill, and Alex suggested that for our specific needs, the pallet changer would be a better economic alternative.”

Apple To Buy Chips From Arizona Semiconductor Plant

Apple Inc. plans to buy chips from an Arizona semiconductor plant that expects to begin operations in 2024, Bloomberg News reported.

Tim Cook, CEO of the tech giant, seemed to refer to the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. fab that’s under construction in north Phoenix when he made the remarks during internal meetings in Germany, Bloomberg reported.

“We’ve already made a decision to be buying out of a plant in Arizona, and this plant in Arizona starts up in ’24, so we’ve got about two years ahead of us on that one, maybe a little less,” Cook said to employees. “And in Europe, I’m sure that we will also source from Europe as those plans become more apparent.”

TSMC, which is scheduled to start mass production in Phoenix in 2024, is Apple’s exclusive chip-manufacturing partner from its plants in Taiwan, Bloomberg reported. Though, Apple has contracted with Intel Corp. — which is expanding its Chandler fabs — in the past, the report stated that a new deal is unlikely.

From its plants in Taiwan, TSMC is already the world’s largest contract chipmaker.

The Phoenix fab is set to produce 5-nanometer chips. It is also gearing up to produce more advanced 4-nanometer chips, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Bloomberg reported that it’s unclear if the Phoenix fabs would meet Apple’s future need of more advanced, 3-nanometer chips.

The Business Journal reported last year that TSMC's first phase, which was announced in late 2020, will be worth $12 billion, and that the final investment in the facility, now under construction, will be even larger, potentially worth about $35 billion. The first phase of that fab is the largest foreign direct investment in the state’s history.

TSMC confirmed that it is now constructing a building to serve as a second fab at its Arizona site, leveraging resources from construction of its first fab for greater cost effectiveness. By Phoenix Business Journal staff

Let’s View Our Employees Like We Do Our Customers

Successful companies possess intricate customer profiles which enable them to deliver exactly what customers want. Great care, time and research go into developing these profiles.

What if employers put that same time and energy into understanding what their employees want?

“The rules of the game have changed in part due to the pandemic,” explains Tim Glowa, principal, Human Capital Services at Grant Thornton LLP. “We were used to seeing a one-sided approach in employee relations. Companies offered a value proposition to employees, and they were expected to take it. But now that power is shifting toward employees in the current labor market as employees have more choices. And we need to look at employees through the same marketing perspective that we do our customers.”

This shift manifests in a variety of ways. “People are switching to higher paid jobs as pressure results in higher wages,” notes Glowa. “Another important development is if an employee feels that the promises made about the nature of the work don’t materialize, they will go elsewhere.”

These expectations, which can be viewed as the employee value proposition, should be structured and respected, just as the company would hold up its customer value proposition.

The foundation of a successful employee value proposition is to foremost understand the specific requirements, or desires, of the workforce. And at the top of every survey ever taken employees list pay as the first determinant when either taking a job or the reason why they leave their current job for another. In manufacturing the competition is fierce for workers as other industries are now offering higher wages than they have in the past. “If Amazon, or a fast-food restaurant, or a new manufacturing company comes to town, even employees who are loyal to the company will leave for higher pay,” says Glowa.

Loyalty needs to be redefined says Glowa. “Loyalty has to go two ways. We need to pay people fairly for the work they do. And the working conditions have to be taken into account as well. For example, even though a factory is safe it could be sweaty, foul-smelling and loud. If offered the chance to work in an airconditioned restaurant with a better environment for equal or more pay many employees that were considered loyal will leave.”

Glowa says that companies need to understand the breadth of employees’ requirements, which in manufacturing includes issues such as flexibility and scheduling. “Our studies have shown that 80% of workers want more flexibility in where and when they work. While that might be harder to accommodate in manufacturing, there are still some ways to increase flexibility, if that is a top requirement of the workforce. For example, younger workers

with families could be given the day shift more often than the night shift.”

Once the predominant concerns are understood and converted into policies, the next step is to ensure that managers are capable of acting upon them. While that might not sound difficult, the workplace is very different these days. This new environment creates an uncomfortable position for managers, says Glowa, who now need to respond and react to conditions that they haven’t seen before.

This complicated workplace environment might explain why almost 30% of those polled by Grant Thornton, say that dealing with their manager represents the most stressful part of their day. This doesn’t surprise Glowa, but he feels this number is higher than is necessary. And one reason is that managers remain stuck in their ways especially when it comes to measuring productivity. “Many senior leaders still judge employees based on them occupying seats in the office. It’s how they were measured and so moved up to become managers in the first place. But doing things the way they have always been done is outdated thinking. The old ‘my way or the highway isn’t going to work anymore.”

But in fairness to managers, often they receive no training. “There is a disconnect between what senior leadership thinks they are providing in terms of training and how prepared managers feel. In a survey, we did of 550 HR leaders, 80% said they believed they were providing adequate training. But only 20% of the managers felt that way,” said Glowa.

The consequence of poorly trained managers shows up very clearly in a metric that most companies are viewing very closely – employee engagement. Grant Thornton’s survey, “Entice Talent Through Reimaging the Workforce Model”, which surveyed >5,000 US employees found that 49% are disengaged:

They do not recommend their employer to friends and family as a great place to work.

They do not see working at their current employer in six months’ time.

Their company does not inspire them to perform at their best.

The survey notes that the 15% with the lowest engagement score are actively disengaged and can be safely called “quiet quitters,” and of that group:

61% are female

42% are actively looking for another job

36% are Millennials, 34% are part of Gen X, 21% are Boomers, 7% are part of Gen Z 50% are frontline workers (customer-facing)

“So half of all employers are disengaged -- that’s a large number -- especially when employee engagement has a known link to profitability,” says Glowa. “Over the years that I have worked with companies, and have seen that a facility that has higher levels of engagement will perform better than those with lower levels of engagement.”

Workforce Skills Gap Threatens Reshoring Of Supply Chains Critical To U.S. Economic And National Security

Global disruption and geopolitical risk created by black swan events like the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in unstable global supply chains and shortages of essential goods. These unpredictable disturbances spotlighted the need to invest in reshoring essential product ecosystems. Overcoming the manufacturing workforce skills-gap is critical to this effort.

Unfilled industry jobs are estimated to escalate to 2.1 million skilled jobs by 2030. Fortyfive percent of manufacturing executives surveyed have already turned down business opportunities due to lack of workers. We must resolve the skills gap in order to reshore supply chains that are crucial to U.S. national and economic security.

It is fundamentally important that U.S. manufacturers engage a wider, more diverse labor pool by increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); add flexibility models to attract and retain talent; overcome misperceptions of manufacturing careers; re-skill and up-skill existing workers; and adopt public-private partnerships to provide training that aligns with the needs of business and industry.

Simply put, we must train a larger and more diverse skilled workforce. And, to keep up with the pace of technological change, companies should consider ongoing training initiatives—in other words, lifelong learning.

Women in manufacturing are a prime DEI example. Although women make up 47% of

the total workforce, they make up only about 30% of the the people employed in manufacturing industries. Manufacturers would be wise to tap into this highly educated labor pool who earn more than half of the associate, undergraduate and graduate degrees awarded in the U.S.

Introducing flexibility in manufacturing work models can expand and diversify the talent pipeline. Implementing flexible work models such as parttime or reduced hours, flextime, compressed workweeks, hybrid work, or job sharing will result in higher employee engagement and increased productivity.

I believe overcoming two common manufacturing misperceptions is key to recruitment. First, training versus degrees: Multiple government websites show income as a function of the number of

degrees, while failing to mention that an apprentice graduate has an income similar to a four-year university graduate. I convinced the Labor Department to change one page but there are many more online. This data is the basis for the unrelenting societal pressure to go to college.

Second, we need to change the misperception that manufacturing careers are dark, dirty, dangerous, dead-end, and declining (the “5Ds”). Conditions have dramatically improved. To overcome these misperceptions and attract more young workers, the industry needs to demonstrate that modern manufacturing is a high-skilled, high-tech, high-paying, stable career choice. By promoting the success of reshoring, we overcome the “declining” issue.

Many manufacturing jobs now require higher-tech skills to support advanced manufacturing, automation, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT), all of which increase productivity, drive innovation and boost U.S. competitiveness. New methods of training are emerging. For example, Industry 4.0 is improving training and safety conditions through remote experts, 3D work

instructions, augmented reality, real-time monitoring, and more. Various public/private partnerships align workforce training with industry needs. Following are a few partnerships, companies, and training initiatives that are collaborating to close the manufacturing skills gap.

The Manufacturing USA network is comprised of 16 institutes with ongoing workforce development initiatives that work with educational institutions and industry to define new careers for automation, robotics, AI, and data analytics.

The U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the AFLCIO recently announced the launch of a national workforce development strategy for lithium-battery manufacturing. The $5-million investment will support workforce training programs in energy and automotive communities in an effort to bolster the domestic battery supply chain.

The National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) is recognized by the Department of Labor as an Apprenticeship Ambassador, focusing on filling the skills gap through access to training and educational resources that are industry-backed, industry-tested, and industry-proven. Offerings provide tools from pre-hire testing to training. The pre-apprenticeship program is designed to develop entry-level skills. NTMA-U is a fully online educational program that provides both the related instruction for a

apprenticeship and specific incumbent worker training.

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), a nonprofit association of professionals, educators, and students, creates opportunities to help advance today’s workforce and develop the next generation of manufacturing professionals.

CMC Adds Capacity with Hwacheon VESTA-2000

“Continental Machining Company (CMC) founder Butch Yaple probably trained half the machinists in Albuquerque”, owner Kelly Denison says. “Not only was he a legend and an extremely gifted machinist, but he was also highly committed to helping to train the next generation of machinists”, Kelly adds.

And what better training ground than a machine shop that manufactures parts for the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Energy (DOE). CMC’s complex parts range from single parts to complete assemblies, and they specialize in machining (Turning and Milling on Horizontal, Vertical and Five Axis Machines), welding (AWS and ASME certified) and fabricating very large parts. You should not be surprised to learn that CMC is consistently an ‘A+’ shop for its Quality rating. It has to be, as you just can’t get a more stringent customer than our US government. CMC’s parts have gone to Mars with CMC’s contribution on the cameras, they have parts that are used for our nuclear weapon program, and they make parts for a weapon system that defends Israel. Kelly says that as a Christian, he is very proud to be a small part of programs that defend the USA and Israel. And while the majority of CMC’s parts are for DOD and DOE, they also make parts for the pharmaceutical, space, and directed energy industries.

A little about how the company started and has come to be. Kelly’s father, Dave Denison, was one of the lucky individuals trained by Butch. Though he had recently graduated from Central New Mexico Community College — CNM — (formerly Technical Vocational Institute), his real hands on training began when he came to work under Butch’s tutelage. Work at CMC was so rewarding that Dave spent his entire career at the company.

The business, after 35 years of ownership by Yaple, changed hands in 2000 when Dave purchased the business, allowing Yaple to enjoy retirement.

Dave’s son Kelly worked at the business from the time he was 14 years old, and officially joined full time working nights while attending classes at CNM in the day. Many years later, in 2020, he purchased the business from Dave. “Not only did I have the opportunity to learn hands on machining from the best, but I also was mentored by business minded team specialists with the other disciplines of running a business, from finance to logistics to marketing to real estate.” Kelly feels that in his

early years, he was blessed to be trained in all of the facets of being an entrepreneur and running a company.

One can imagine how incredibly challenging it would be to have the US government as your primary customer. “We have to consistently excel at quality; you just can’t fail the government.” He adds, “We have always had a keen focus on quality, and Jason Romero, our Quality Manager, is just outstanding.” The company has been certified to ISO standards for more than 15 years now, and, Kelly says, “We don’t certify to be able to check it off for customers; rather we live and breathe it. We intuitively know that it is a tool that helps us to be a better company and enables the quality ratings we consistently achieve with our parts.”

Today, CMC has more than 30 machines, including 5 axis machining centers in their 26,500 square foot facility. “We specialize in very large parts, and we are skilled in machining, welding and fabricating. We are equally capable of manufacturing prototypes to production parts.” Kelly says, adding “We have a number of Haas machines, all purchased from MMT Productivity, the local dealer. We highly value the Haas machines, not just for their price points, but also for the service we get from MMT Productivity.” He continued, “Another huge benefit with the Haas machines is that since we hire many of our new employees from CNM, where they are trained on the Haas machines, when they come to work for us, they are immediately productive since they know the machines.”

Supplier loyalty is integral to the way CMC conducts its business. “I can’t say enough about the service and support we get from MMT Productivity. This includes company president Mark Smith, our local salesperson Danny White, and Dave Smith of Productivity’s tooling division. We value the company as a whole and respect

In 2019 Kelly attended MMT Productivity’s bi-annual Oktoberfest event, the largest dealer held machine tool show in the US with an average attendance between 3,000 to 4,000 visitors. It was during this event that he was introduced to the Hwacheon machine tool line. Kelly then contacted some Productivity customers who own Hwacheon machines and heard very positive feedback from all. “We recently received our first Hwacheon. We chose the VESTA-2000. We liked this machine for its value, capabilities, and quality. The finish and components are on par with other high-end machining centers. We added probing and a Nikken 4th axis rotary table to increase its capabilities”. He elaborated, “The 78” x 33” work envelope lends itself well for large part machining. Kelly says, “I believe in paying it forward, and frankly we have to be involved if we want our trade to survive.” Kelly also selects a machinist to accompany him to machine tool shows, saying that he wants to help CMC machinists learn about new products, and enable them to get out of the business’ 4 walls.

Tucson-based startup Phantom Space wins satellite mission orders from NASA

Tucson-based commercial rocket builder Phantom Space Corp. will be sending four NASA satellites into space as part of a program meant to help develop new launch vehicles.

Phantom Space will send up NASA’s CubeSat satellites on the company’s two-stage Daytona rocket, with the initial space flights planned for 2024. Two of the CubeSats will be launched on the second Phantom flight and two more will be on the fourth, with both flights starting from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Southern California.

The Arizona startup, which was founded in 2020, heralded the deal as a significant step for itself and its sector.

The task orders are part of a NASA program that directs what are called Venture-class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare, or VADR, missions. The VADR program has multiple objectives, including fostering the development of new launch vehicles as well as reducing costs by using less NASA oversight with payloads that can accept a higher risk tolerance.

“The new contracts will help us launch a Golden Age of commercial space, and it’s an honor to have NASA onboard — their leadership is invaluable to the space industry, and we are proud to help their programs expand humanity’s knowledge of our planet, solar system, and beyond,” said Mark Lester, Phantom Space chief operating officer and VADR program manager for the company, in a statement.

Lester said the deal with NASA will help his company increase the market for private space companies.“The more spacecraft we put up into space, the further we can reduce costs and expand access to space for businesses and nations that couldn’t afford it before,” he said in the statement. “There’s a whole new space race going on here, and we’re inspired to be part of it.”

NASA selected Phantom Space along with 12 other companies earlier this year to launch VADR missions, and the four CubeSat task orders are Phantom’s first winning bids.

The amount of the four orders with Phantom Space was not disclosed, but VADR selection announcement earlier this year said fixed-price indefinite-delivery/indefinitequantity contracts have a five-year ordering period with a maximum total value of $300 million across all contracts.

Denver Precision Products Announces New Machinery Purchases

Military spending overall in the state fell from $20.2 billion in fiscal 2020 to $14.6 billion in fiscal 2021. That was a sharper drop than the 5.6% decline in spending nationwide during the same period, when combined spending on contracts and military personnel fell from $593.9 billion to $559 billion.But analysts said that while Arizona may have slipped in its standing among states, the drop is not cause for concern. The defense industry remains a pillar of the state’s economy. they said, and will likely continue to be so for the foreseeable future.

“In terms of a good environment and a welcoming environment, Arizona is positioned very well to continue that growth in this industry,” said Todd Sanders, president and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Area Chamber of Commerce.

Pima County, home to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, saw spending on military salaries and benefits grow from $746 million in fiscal 2020 to $764.6 million a year later. Michael Guymon, president and CEO of the Tucson Chamber of Commerce, said that personnel spending “demonstrates that the Department of Defense is still very committed to Davis-Monthan and the missions that come out of Davis-Monthan.”

Military contracts have long been a staple of the Arizona economy, which includes multinational defense manufacturers such as Boeing, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, among others. But contract spending took a hit in fiscal 2021 both nationally and in Arizona, with contracts in the

state falling from $15.7 billion to $12.3 billion, according to the Pentagon report for 2021.

Boeing saw its contracts in Arizona fall from $2.2 billion to $1.2 billion over the year. But Kathleen Jolivette, vice president of Boeing Mesa’s attack helicopter program, said that she looks forward to the future, noting the “solid and stable defense demand” in the U.S.Jolivette said Boeing in Arizona has been focused on delivering a continued supply of Apache helicopters, working to deliver “the best capability to the warfighter today while innovating for the future.”

Despite the Army lowering its orders for Apache helicopters from 49 in fiscal 2021 to 30 in fiscal 2022, Jolivette said that “strong international sales make up the gaps.”

The fiscal 2021 numbers nationwide do not reflect billions in spending this year on military assistance to Ukraine in its war with Russia. The state rankings were also skewed by “large contracts to Pfizer, Inc. and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in New York” and to “Moderna, Inc. in Massachusetts” to acquire COVID-19 vaccines, the Pentagon report said.

The Pentagon also said that while eight of the 10 companies

on its list of the top 10 contractors had been there before, Pfizer and Moderna “were both new to the list and are anomalies for traditional defense spending.”

Over the past decade, Arizona has been as low as 13th among states for defense spending – in fiscal years 2016, 2017 and now 2021 – and as high as seventh place in fiscal 2020.

“Clearly, this spending is important for Arizona,” Sanders said. “We looked at the stats for 2021 and as you look at the rest of the economy, you saw a similar drop in revenues or spending with the rest of the economy as a result of Covid.”

Sanders said the slowdown in defense spending was a “delayed effect of the economic slowdown from Covid.”But he expects the slowdown is just temporary and reiterated the importance of defense to Arizona, where the Arizona Commerce Authority says 56,500 workers are employed in aerospace or defense jobs. Mesa-Based Startup Aiming To Revolutionize Manufacturing Secures $750k In Pre-Seed Funding

Christian LaRosa wasn’t necessarily looking to be an entrepreneur. But as the former Arizona State University engineering student worked to address a need that he saw in rocket manufacturing, it became clear that what he was working on was going to be a product — and one that would be in demand beyond his own industry.

“I’m an engineer by training, by practice,” LaRosa said. “I’m a founder by necessity.”

The necessity was finding a way to overcome the limitations of 3D printing, whose usual methods and machines are not capable of making the kinds of largedimension components needed by aerospace builders. The company he founded, Rosotics, changes all that, he said.

After about three years in stealth mode, Rosotics is ready to roll after receiving $750,000 in pre-seed funding. The investment is led by Draper Associates — an early-stage venture capital fi rm based in San Mateo, California — along with participation from Correlation Ventures, Vibe Capital and Sequoia Capital.

LaRosa, who is 23, also was an AZ Inno Under 25 honoree earlier this year.

During the past three years, LaRosa and his Rosotics team have been fine-tuning an expandable and portable 3D printing machine called the Mantis, modeled after the insect in the way it folds — like origami, LaRosa said — into a compact space a little taller than a person.

The machine uses what’s known as rapid induction printing, which replaces the traditional 3D printing process by which metal wire is fed through a nozzle and liquifi ed using a laser focused on a small area. Rapid induction instead heats metals by using a coil in the nozzle that induces a magnetic fi eld and takes advantage of the metal’s capacity for conducting electricity so that heat is generated within the metal itself.

Rosotics looks for inroads in aerospace sector

The advantages, LaRosa said, include increased energy effi ciency and speed along with the ability to print tough grades of metal. And with the Mantis machine’s expanding design, the process can be used to make larger prints than have ever been possible before — at dimensions measured in dozens of feet or meters, LaRosa said.

It could make 3D printing feasible for the aerospace manufacturing, which LaRosa said is long overdue for a way to replace the welding, steamrolling and other inefficient methods that are inadequate for the needs of the rapidly advancing fi eld.

“It’s beyond the scope of just a nice to have, a novelty; it’s something you need to be doing,” LaRosa said. “Aerospace needs this. … The time that this technology needed to be here — it’s not today or tomorrow. It needed to be here yesterday.”

And while Rosotics is starting out in aerospace — with a pilot program planned with “a very major player in the rocket business” in the fi rst quarter of 2023 that he declined to name — LaRosa said the company’s technology will be expanded into a variety of industries that use heavy structure manufacturing.

That’s a big part of what attracted Draper Associates’ attention.

“Rosotics makes the largest metal 3D printers in the world and they will fundamentally change aerospace manufacturing forever,” Draper Associates Founding Partner Tim Draper said in a statement. “Their proprietary process, Rapid Induction Printing, allows customers of the company to easily iterate and produce novel vehicles for space and transportation. We at Draper Associates are thrilled to be part of their journey.”

ready to start moving very quickly to spread its reach, with the money devoted to hardware deliveries.

LaRosa describes Rosotics’ business model as “hardware as a service,” with the idea that as the hardware continues to improve, customers will be able to take advantage of the latest developments.

Arizona City Gives Green Light To Procter & Gamble Manufacturing Plant

The city of Coolidge gave its fi rst approval to Procter & Gamble’s proposed 2 millionsquare-foot manufacturing plant at Inland Port Arizona, a 2,700-acre industrial park along State Route 87 and Union Pacifi c rail line.

The company released detailslate in December about its new $500 million facility planned for 430 acres adjacent to Nikola Corp.’s automotive campus in Coolidge, a city located southeast of Phoenix in Pinal County.

The facility will serve as P&G’s fabric care manufacturing plant and support its line of products including Tide PODS, Downy Unstopables and Bounce Dryer Sheets.

Coolidge City Council unanimously approved a development

agreement with P&G on Monday for Coolidge to build up to $18.6 million in public infrastructure for the plant and giving its support for a foreign trade zone designation, which can reduce property taxes by more than 70%.

“Choosing this location, we do a lot of analysis on where we should locate our manufacturing, where we should ship our products. After analyzing over 500 properties, this was by far the best choice,” he said during the meeting on Monday night. “It has a lot of facets to how we choose this location, but ... this partnership that we’ve started to discuss over the past a little over a year was the key deciding factor. We want to be in a place where we can make an impact to the community, where we can be part of the community and we feel like this is a place we can do that.”

At full build-out, the facility is expected to create 745 total jobs, more than $41.3 million in wages and nearly $464.5 million in annual economic activity, according to an economic impact analysis conducted by Elliott D. Pollack & Co. in November for the

plant, which was searching for a location through codename “Project FYEO.”

News of P&G’s new plant comes as more manufacturers look to expand or move operations to Arizona amid a push for the U.S. to domesticate manufacturing to reduce reliance on other countries and alleviate supply chain disruptions. The state recently said that about 58% of the projects committed to Arizona were for manufacturing in 2022 compared to 35% of projects in 2020.

P&G is eligible for about $10 million in state incentives through the Arizona Commerce Authority’s Qualifi ed Facility Program, which is performance based and dependent on jobs created, wages and investment.

The consumer goods giant has committed to creating at least 500 jobs with annual average wages of $55,000 and an investment of $500 million, according to the ACA and city of Coolidge documents.

The plant is expected to be operational by 2025 and will use the company’s “most advanced” and innovative manufacturing and sustainable technologies. It will be the company’s third greenfield manufacturing plant built since 1971.

“A detailed and thorough site selection process was conducted evaluating sites against several criteria. The search expanded across several states and included hundreds of locations. The Coolidge site best enables P&G’s Fabric Care business to deliver on our supply chain strategy to best meet the needs of our consumers and customers,” a company spokesperson said in an email to the Business Journal.

Pinal Central reported that about 70 to 80% of the 1,000 construction positions and 500 permanent plant positions over five years will be local employees.

P&G currently operates a plant in Phoenix for its personal health care business at 2050 S. 35th Ave. It has been operational for nearly 50 years and will not be impacted by the new plant, the company said.

In addition to Nikola’s automotive campus, developers and semiconductor-related companies have also made plans for the Inland Port, including NRS Logistics, a petrochemical and pharmaceutical products distributor for semiconductor and electric vehicle industries, and Crest Park Ventures, which has proposed a 1.5 million-square-foot speculative industrial facility with four buildings over 128 acres, Pinal Central reported this summer. This Is How Two New Mexico Labs Contributed To A Major Fusion Breakthrough

For more than two decades, researchers have worked to try and achieve fusion ignition. Scientists in California recently did exactly that — with the help of a few New Mexico labs. Reently, representatives from several organizations, announced that scientists at California’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) generated more energy from a fusion reaction than was put into it. The condition is called “fusion ignition,” and it’s a result researchers around the country have worked toward for decades.

“I actually never thought the day would come — and it’s just incredible that it’s here,” said Michael Cuneo, a senior manager for pulsed power science and technology at Sandia National Laboratories. “[To understand] the technical accomplishment, you really have to have been in the fi eld for 30 years to know. We’ve all been waiting for this day.”

Sandia helped develop different parts and diagnostics that the team at LLNL used to achieve fusion ignition at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), Cuneo said. It did this using its own fusion reaction facility, called the Z Pulsed Power Facility.

The facility uses what it calls the “Z machine.” The machine creates fusion reactions differently than NIF.

While NIF uses lasers to compress a target and create high pressure that leads to a fusion reaction, Sandia’s Z machine creates large magnetic currents that “squeeze metal cylinders and create really high pressures,” Cuneo said.It’s what Cuneo called a “complementary process.” Although the Sandia facility, which is run by a staff of around 200 people, doesn’t use the same physics, its test results can still complement the research being done at the NIF in California.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) was also among LLNL’s collaborating institutions. The northern New Mexico lab provided several diagnostics that offered data on the quality of the implosion reaction used at NIF, a spokesperson from the lab said in a Dec. 16 email to Albuquerque Business First. GateWay’s Center for Industrial Technology Expands Opportunity, Receives Grant to Help Students

When GateWay Community College announced the launch of its new Center for Industrial Technology (CIT) on its Washington Campus, the college knew that there was a demand for its manufacturing and skilled-trade programs. With the manufacturing industry booming in the state, the college has been moving quickly to ensure its students continue to be some of the most well-soughtafter graduates upon completion by expanding its equipment and training opportunities.

And just last month, GateWay and its CIT programs were awarded a $15,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation. The Gene Haas Foundation has supported local communities, charities, and students for over 20 years. The grant will focus on specialty training for two specific classes: Beginning 5-Axis CNC programming and 5-Axis CNC Setup, Operation, and Probing. The funds will provide financial assistance to students to help them with their education expenses.

"This will provide opportunities for so many students. All of the programs we offer through the Center for Industrial Technology have great career prospects," said Dr. Craig Urbanski, division chair for the Center of Industrial Technology. "We've been a workforce development leader for over 50 years, and our industry partners know they can count on our students to be among the best."

To keep up with its expansion, the college also recently welcomed the arrival of brand-new equipment. Students will now train on new technology, which includes the HAAS UMC500SS machines with dynamic work offset, touch screen, full probing, and 15,000 RPM spindle for high-speed machining. And with classes starting in January, the new machines ensure that students train on the most cutting-edge technology.

"The Gene Haas Foundation grant will help ease the financial burden of qualified students interested in industrial design technology," said Dave Zamora, lead faculty for the program. "Combined with this new equipment, we're confident our program will help students find better careers while also playing a critical role in the Arizona economy."

With new state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, GateWay continues to find new opportunities to expand its core manufacturing and skilled trades programs. The recently launched CIT includes five of the college's existing programs: Industrial Design Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Water Resources and Environmental Science Technology, and Water and Wastewater Treatment.

Los Lunas Plant To Undergo $2.5M Modernization Effort

The materials engineering company Wall Colmonoy announced plans to give its Alloy Products plant in Los Lunas a $2.5 million upgrade.

The modernization effort includes enhancements to the plant infrastructure, alloy furnace equipment and the research and development laboratory.

“This investment is a reflection of our commitment to our customers to provide the very best quality products and to our team members to provide them with safe and advanced working environments,” Alloy Products plant manager Kurt Boehm said in a prepared statement.

Wall Colmonoy’s 52,000-square-foot Los Lunas plant has operated for the past 26 years and employs nearly 100 people. The facility manufactures products that serve a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, oil and gas and food and agriculture, among others.

3 Phoenix Businesses Make ‘Forbes’ Best Small Companies List

The upgrade includes equipment to support these products, including a modern digital microscope that can capture high-resolution images.

The business publication listed Grand Canyon Education Inc., as the seventh best small company, while Cavco Industries Inc. came in at No. 13 and Inventure Foods Inc. was 33rd.

Established in 1938, Wall Colmonoy serves consumers across the world and is based in Madison Heights, Michigan. It has additional facilities in Oklahoma City, Okla., Cincinnati, Ohio, and Franklin, Penn. The company also operates from Ontario, Canada and abroad in the United Kingdom.

Forbes ranked the 100 best small companies that had been publicly traded for at least a year, generated annual revenue between $5 million and $1 billion, and had a stock price no lower than $5 a share. The rankings were based on earnings growth, sales growth and return on equity in the past year and over five years. Stock performance over the last year also was factored into the ranking.

Phoenix Among Top Cities For Tech Job Growth, Report Shows

From Oct. 1, 2013, to Oct. 1, 2014, Grand Canyon’s sales were $641 million. The for-profit Christian university posted sales growth of 28 percent and earnings per share growth of 54 percent over the past five years.

Demand for tech workers remained elevated in the Phoenix metro area, despite hiring freezes and layoffs occurring in the sector nationwide this year.

Cavco brought in $539 million for the year ended Oct. 1. The factorybuilt home manufacturer reported earnings per share growth of 88 percent over the past five years, but only a 4 percent increase in return on equity for that period.

The Phoenix metro area saw a 31.7% increase in job posting growth through October, compared to the same time period last year, according to the latest 2022 Dice Tech Jobs report released Dec. 13.

The Valley ranked sixth out of cities nationwide for job posting growth and 14th for overall tech job posting volume, the report shows.

At the end of October, 15 cities nationwide reported year-over-year double-digit job posting growth, led by Houston (45.6%), Orlando, Florida (42.7%), Detroit (41.6%) Miami (33.2%) and Irvine, California (33.2%).

The Valley’s monthly tech job postings peaked at 6,244 in June before dipping to 3,782 in October, according to the report.

Only four cities on the list – Atlanta; Plano, Texas; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Columbus, Ohio – experienced a year-over-year drop in tech job postings.

Although some 85,000 workers were reportedly laid off in the tech sector nationwide, more than 375,000 positions remain unfilled, signaling demand for workers continues to grow, especially in the health care, aerospace and finance industries.

Tech job postings nationwide were up 25% year-overyear and demand is looking stronger than it did in 2019, the report said.Job growth and volume statistics show increases in postings for engineering, development and data-related roles as companies look to focus on digital transformation initiatives and grow their core tech teams, according to the report.

Trends forecast a drop in job postings during the holidays, followed by a jump in January. But, those trends could be impacted by a potential economic recession, according to the report.“Employers in the healthcare, aerospace, finance and consulting industries have hired massive numbers of tech professionals to support innovation efforts in 2022 and that has continued into Q4,” the report’s author said. “With recent layoffs, a potential recession and 52% of tech professionals likely to change employers in the next year, these employers may be able to fill their open roles more quickly in 2023.”

Nikola Signs Deal With Hydrogen Supplier Plug Power To Provide Vital Equipment For Valley Hub

Zero-emissions vehicle maker Nikola Corp. is taking another step toward establishing a hydrogen hub in Arizona by signing an agreement with Plug Power, another public company dedicated to expanding hydrogen energy.

Under the deal, Phoenix-based Nikola will sell up to 75 of its Tre hydrogen fuelcell electric vehicles over the next three years to Plug Power. In turn, Nikola will purchase a liquefaction system from Plug Power that will initially be capable of processing 30 metric-tons of hydrogen fuel per day.

Additionally, the companies entered a 125-metric-ton-per-day hydrogen supply-and-offtake deal which is expected to provide Nikola with at least 100 daily metric tons of hydrogen from various locations across the country. That amount can be increased over time.

“Nikola and Plug share a common vision for sustainable, efficient, energy solutions which supports our commitment to decarbonize the transportation industry,” said Nikola President, Energy, Carey Mendes, in a statement. “This strategic relationship will help underpin Nikola’s ambitious growth plans to expand the hydrogen energy business and to support the adoption of Nikola’s zero-emission Class 8 trucks.”

Plug Power, which is headquartered near Albany, New York, will use Nikola’s trucks to carry its liquid hydrogen tankers for delivery to customers across North America.

Nikola hydrogen hub shapes up in Buckeye Nikola’s hydrogen hub will be in Buckeye and is intended to support the deployment of Nikola’s Tre FCEV trucks and the hydrogen infrastructure that the company plans to build out to support a trucking network in California and the Southwest. The company quietly acquired the nearly 1,000-acre site for $16.5 million in September, and soon after that it confirmed that it planned to build a hydrogen production facility there.

Nikola has also applied for potentially $1.3 billion in federal loan money for the hub through the Innovative Clean Energy projects program with the U.S. Department of Energy Loan Program Office.

Nikola’s FCEV trucks will be built at the company’s manufacturing facility in Coolidge, in Pinal County south of Phoenix. That’s where the company is already building its battery-electric vehicles. By Jeff Gifford –Phoenix Business Journal
