Phoenix’s population grew from 1.4 million people in 2010 to 1.6 million in 2020, a rate of 11.2 percent, according to the Census Bureau. The increase has been fueled not just by immigration and sun-seeking retirees but also by the arrival of tech companies and middle-class families from California and other more expensive parts of the country seeking more affordable housing. The Phoenix metro area continued to sprawl outward into the desert, with outlying suburbs such as Buckeye growing by nearly 80 percent over the past 10 years. But Phoenix is also growing up, booming with new condo towers and rowhouses filling in the downtown. All this growth has raised anxieties about how the region will supply enough water for all the new residents and their yards when brutal droughts and hotter summers are draining rivers and reservoirs. The population boom across Phoenix and surrounding Maricopa County has also translated into a political shift. President Biden narrowly won Arizona’s 11 electoral votes last November, eking out a win in what had once been a reliably Republican presidential state. Even before the pandemic, they were leaving major cities like New York, Los Angeles,

www.flexproaz.com and Miami and moving to less populated cities across the US. One of these cities was Phoenix, Arizona. In 2019, 5,958 millennials migrated to Phoenix, according to SmartAsset, which used the most recently available US Census Bureau data. The migration meant that 23% of Phoenix’s population was millennials. In April, CNBC reported that the trend of moving to Phoenix continued during the pandemic, citing data shared by LinkedIn and U-Haul. “Young, wealthy people are increasingly opting to put down roots in Arizona, a sign of the changing demographics that challenge the state’s longstanding reputation as a haven for retirees,” Insider’s Natasha Solo-Lyons wrote in July. “In particular, the capital of Phoenix ... has attracted relocators from coastal and Midwestern cities seeking a cheaper, more laid-back life.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

Lee Dundas, named after his father, affectionately known as JR, successfully transitioned into full retirement at the end of 2021. Lee along with brother Kelly Dundas have worked in the plastic industry from the time they learned to walk and founded 3D Plastics in 1999. When asking how Lee was settling into his newly acquired life of leisure, “Well, you caught me rewiring my garage,” he stated matter-of-factly, with a chuckle.

So, what will he be doing with the rest of his life? The enthusiasm of Lee’s response was one of pure positive expectation! “Oh, my! I have two new beautiful grandchildren that will be my full-time job to spoil rotten. I have rekindled my involvement in Slot Car Racing – boy, a bit rusty there. Not quite sure where my hand-eye coordination went. Anna and I had planned to travel a bit but COVID has put the skids on that for a while. As soon as the weather warms up though, we plan on taking some day trips in our sports car. Oh, I have a ton of yard work that needs attending to. Sleeping in has become appealing, but need to be careful with that one. Lazy can sneak up on you.” Lee’s days will be filled with his family – two sons, a daughter,

their spouses and four grandchildren. Wow! Full and bright days ahead. Lee Dundas, we all, family and friends, wish you the best possible for your welldeserved and blessed retirement. Seize every new day and make them all special! Kelly Dundas succeeded Lee as 3D’s president in mid-2021.

3D metal processing is essential to the production of pressure vessels, boilers, and similar equipment. United Precision Services National Sales Manager, John Prevish explained that the challenge facing fabricators is to make the process fast and easy to setup while providing accurate results that won’t require further, often manual, processing. “It is not uncommon for the actual shape of a dome to differ from the ideal shape by several centimeters,” said Prevish. “By allowing the actual dimension of a dome to lay within allowed tolerances, MicroStep’s 3D scanning technology greatly increases accuracy. Conventional methods of positioning corrections via control of plasma arc voltage are not applicable with 3D cutting. Employing a scanner, however, allows users to create a model of the actual surface and use the model to analyze the dome’s shape, locate its center, and define the exact toolpath above the surface.”

www.ellisontechnologies.com |

Thanks to the modular structure of MicroStep machines in terms of dimensions, types, cutting zone locations, and tool station configurations, United Precision Services can provide a machine according to the exact requirements of a customer´s product. This allows a single gantry with a bevel tool station, 3D scanner and marker to be used for processing domes as well as flat sheets. In 2021, MicroStep further advanced the 3D cutting process with the introduction of CAMLive. This novel approach to cutting 3D objects makes it possible to scan the true shape of 3D objects such as dome segments, cast or formed parts, and adjust mCAM-generated cutting paths accordingly to the object’s true shape. As a result, the scanning process is no longer limited to domes and beams. Together with the optimization of the scanning process, CAMLive makes advanced dome processing more user friendly. Portland-Based Daimler Trucks, Partners Plan $650M Charging Network By Pete Danko – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal Electric trucks are on the way, and Portland-based Daimler Trucks North America and a couple of heavyweight partners are planning a major initiative to help solve the where-to-charge challenge. The tr uck maker, NextEra Energy Resources and BlackRock Renewable Power said Monday they expect to launch a charging-network joint venture this year with a $650 million initial investment split equally among the trio. NextEra is the biggest renewable energy developer in the U.S. The BlackRock group is an arm of the world’s largest money manager. The partners said they expect to begin construction next year and build charging sites for medium- and heavy-duty trucks “on critical freight routes along the east and west coasts and in Texas” by 2026. Daimler last year began taking orders for the battery electric Freightliner eCascadia and eM2, which have collectively traveled more than 1 million miles in fleet tests. The company expects to begin production before the end of the year.

The Daimler-NextEra-BlackRock venture plans to build hydrogen fueling stations also, but not right off the bat. Daimler thinks they are the likely best option for long-haul trucking, but sees them coming further out this decade. The Portland company’s corporate parent, Daimler Truck, is in a joint venture with Volvo called cellcentric to work on the technology. Last April, Daimler joined with Portland General Electric to develop a truck charging site near the truck maker’s Swan Island headquarters. They said that site would inform their future work on electric trucks and charging infrastructure.

Tualatin Grid-Scale Battery Maker Bringing Assembly Closer To Home By Pete Danko – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal Powin’s new battery system will be assembled in Mexico as the Portland-area company shifts and consolidates production closer to home — and customer projects — from Asia. Company executives last year hinted at a nearshoring move in response to supply chain issues. Powin saidTuesday that Celestica, a Canadian manufacturing company, will make the modular battery platform called Centipede in Monterrey, about 140 miles from Texas border cities. Production there is expected to begin in the second quarter this year. “Our partnership with Celestica marks a significant step in Powin’s plans to

COVID 19 SNEEZE GUARDS, QUICK, SAFE, HIGH QUALITY CALL TODAY TO PLACE YOUR ORDER: 503-477-7566 simplify and secure our supply chain for our North American customers,” Powin CEO Geoff Brown said in a statement.

Powin last year suffered from delays and increased shipping costs, like virtually all companies with trans-Pacific supply chains. But China was also a frustrating assembly location due to strict Covid protocols that limited factory access and brought a frequent threat of shutdowns, Powin executives told the Business Journal.

Powin in the past five years has leveraged its historic Asia supply chain expertise and sophisticated battery management technology to become a major supplier of battery systems for utility-scale energy storage. The Southwest U.S. has been a prime location for its systems.

Powin said it expected the move to Monterrey “to reduce logistics-related risks such as vessel availability and tariff-related cost volatility.” Asia remains Powin’s source for battery cells, the building blocks of a battery system. About three-quarters of global cell production capacity was in China as of 2020. Brown said last year that he could foresee one day sourcing cells closer to home but said “that would probably be the furthest out on the timeline” of localizing the company’s supply chain.

Demand has grown as utilities and other grid players turn to energy storage to help bring online intermittent renewables like solar and wind power.

Other than Tesla, the Monterrey facility will make Powin the only utilityscale battery maker with integrated module, rack and enclosure production in North America, the company believes. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Virgin Orbit, Rocket Lab Win $300M Nasa Contract For Satellite Launch Program By I-Chun Chen The VADR contract has a five-year ordering period with a maximum

total budget of $300 million and will be managed by the NASA Launch Services Program at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Virgin Orbit (Nasdaq: VORB), which designs and manufactures its LauncherOne rockets in Long Beach, California, said it will use commercial satellite launch practices together with the flexibility provided by its LauncherOne system to enable more efficient launch timelines, mission-tailored orbits and competitive costs. “This contract award is a great step forward for commercial space,” Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart said in a statement. “The VADR contract vehicle now provides a platform for NASA to more easily contract for flights on our LauncherOne service. That means it will be easier than ever for us to work with NASA to provide targeted and economic access to space, maximizing the science gains from their small satellite missions and enabling ever greater technological innovation.” Rocket Lab (Nasdaq: RKLB) founder and CEO Peter Beck said the program provides new opportunities for science and technology payloads and fostering a growing U.S. commercial launch market. “We are absolutely thrilled to be selected by NASA to support VADR missions, continuing our heritage of delivering a reliable ride to space for the agency’s small satellites as both dedicated and rideshare missions,” Beck said. “NASA’s Launch Services Program plays a crucial role in growing the U.S launch industry by ensuring resilient space access and we could not be prouder to play a role in that.” Virgin Orbit said it has already launched 13 satellites to space for NASA through programs like the Venture Class Launch Services program and the CubeSat Launch Initiative. The company said its selection by NASA as aVADR launch provider comes fresh off its third successful launch in under 12 months, bringing its total deployed satellites to 26. Virgin Orbit said it is now scaling up the flight rate of its LauncherOne system to accommodate high demand from commercial customers, the national security community, the international community and, through programs like VADR, the U.S. civil space community. Long Beach, California-based Rocket Lab said it launched the first Venture Class Launch Services mission in December 2018, successfully deploying 13 educational satellites to orbit from the Electron launch vehicle. The VADR contract joins a list of upcoming Rocket Lab missions for NASA, which include: providing a Photon spacecraft bus for CAPSTONE (the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment), providing two Photon spacecraft for a scientific mission to Mars and a plan to launch NASA’s Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) on the Electron launch vehicle.

Renton-Based Aerospace Company Raises $27.5M To Develop Reusable Space Plane By Marissa Nall – Reporter, Puget Sound Business Journal Radian Aerospace has netted $27.5 million in seed funding to develop a space plane, a singlestage vehicle designed to reach orbit from a horizontal takeoff. The Renton-based company’s design aims to use existing runway infrastructure to send its planes into orbit for up to five days before returning, with a goal of being ready for flight again in 48 hours. However, the company is not aiming to be part of the burgeoning space tourism industry. Rather, it will be “dedicated to missions that make life better on our own planet,” Humphrey said, including research, in-space manufacturing and Earth-monitoring missions, among others. Radian joins Stoke Space, which raised $65 million in December for its reusable second-stage rocket, among Seattle startups aiming to unlock “high cadence” flights to space. from heavyweights like Kent-based Blue Origin and Hawthornebased SpaceX that have drastically reduced cost and increased access to space travel. Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit, which went public through a merger with a blank-check company in December, also uses jets in the first part of its launch operations, sending rockets to orbit from under the wing of a modified Boeing 747 in flight. “To date, a low-cost space transport solution has been lacking that can get humans and cargo to and from space at a highly responsive rate,” said Brett Rome, venture partner at Fine Structure Ventures. “Radian is well positioned to fill that gap with disruptive technology that helps enable the emerging space economy.” The use of wings enables “capabilities and mission types that are simply not possible” with traditional rockets, said co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Livingston Holder.

electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing, or eVOTL, aircraft. The test was a milestone in what could be a growth sector for the aerospace industry. The saucer-shaped Zeva Zero craft undertook four flights, including short climbing maneuvers to around 40-50 feet, with 360-degree turns. “It’s going to be a progression of different flight tests from here on out exploring the functionality of the vehicle in different configurations,” said Zeva CEO StephenTibbits. “In meantime, we’re also running simulations. It performed very much to our expectations.”

John Coykendall.

Urban air mobility — as the emerging industry for small aircraft designed for quick, versatile, pointto-point travel is known — could be a major driver of new aerospace employment in the coming years, said Deloitte analyst

With millions poured into research and development, companies are getting closer to achieving viable designs, with more test flights and bids for certification expected around 2025. But the industry’s progress hinges less on technical success and more on integrating the small craft into the existing regulatory framework, Coykendall said, and there remain many unknowns to how the aircraft will interact with the national airspace. “In the absence of that, these companies could develop the best vehicle

in the world, meet all the technical needs, but there’s not a way to fly it,” he said. Coykendall estimated the emerging air mobility market could grow to $115 billion by 2035, with “huge workforce opportunities” in the Puget Sound region. Within that timeframe, the sector could see as many as 280,000 jobs nationally, representing as much as 10% of the overall aerospace workforce, he said. Having newly expanded into a 14,000-square-foot Tacoma facility, Zeva has six full-time employees and around 20 part-time or contract staff, with a goal to double in size in the coming months. The company has participated in the Boeing GoFly competition and the NASA Urban Air Mobility Grand Challenge and received a grant in November from Washington’s Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation to collaborate with Washington State University on aspects of its design like thrust and controls. The roughly 8-foot-wide, single-person aircraft can carry around 220 pounds and is designed for vertical takeoff, before shifting into horizontal flight. The company has estimated its first production units will sell for around $250,000. While the sector has been dubbed “urban” air mobility, evoking an aerial office commute straight out of science fiction, early entrants are more likely to see success in rural or remote areas, or with emergency services, medicine or cargo delivery, Coykendall said. WWW.NORTHSOUTHMACHINERY.COM | (800) 460-9014 | CA • OR • WA • AZ • NV Semiconductor Supplier Applied Materials Considering Hutto For $2B Project, Sources Say By Kathryn Hardison and Justin Sayers Applied Materials Inc., a global supplier to the semiconductor industry, is considering a $2 billion project in a suburb northeast of Austin as the region becomes a hotbed for chipmakers and the businesses that provide

Route 79 that is primed for development. Hutto officials did not name the company during the meeting, and have declined to provide additional details, cautioning that talks regarding incentives are ongoing and terms of any deal might change. Representatives for Applied Materials did not return requests for comment by publication time.

them with machinery and materials.

The initial capital investment for Project Acropolis would start at $340 million and ramp up to $2 billion over a decade, including the costs of land, machinery and more, according to public officials. It could create more than 800 jobs in fields such as operations, robotics, engineering, computer science and administration, with an average salary exceeding $100,000 plus benefits.

The Silicon Valley-based company, which has played a key role in Austin’s semiconductor sector since the 1990s, may put a manufacturing and research and development facility in Hutto, multiple sources said, where it could create more than 800 jobs over the coming decade.

This potential project comes as some of Applied Materials’ largest clients zero in on the Austin metro amid a federal push to bolster U.S. chipmaking capabilities. Applied Materials sells to the likes of Samsung, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Intel Corp.

A final decision has not been made and Applied Materials (Nasdaq: AMAT) is said to be considering other locales for this project.

It also fits into a trend of large tech companies taking an interest in Austin’s suburbs, where land is relatively cheaper and local governments have been willing to offer incentives. But such projects have also raised fears around mounting affordability and housing concerns, not to mention worries about clogged roads and other quality of life issues.

Hutto leaders recently divulged details of an economic development prospect called “Project Acropolis.” The project was said to represent a manufacturer in the semiconductor industry looking to build on 450 acres at the Hutto “megasite,” a roughly 1,400-acre greenfield site along U.S. A Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST 2

Applied Materials’ long-term growth strategy includes developing

new products and technologies that allow it to expand into new markets, executives stated in its 2021 annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The Santa Clara, California-based company creates equipment and software that the world’s largest chipmakers use to produce semiconductors, and manufacturing experts have suggested that every chip in the world comes into contact with an Applied Materials product at some point in manufacturing. The company said in the SEC filing it owns about 269 acres of buildable land in Montana,Texas, California, Israel and Italy for possible future expansions. Central Texas’ rising reputation as a global chipmaking hub has many expecting the semiconductor supply chain to grow in the region. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is building a $17 billion chipmaking campus in Taylor — directly east of the megasite — and Boise, Idaho-based Micron Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MU) is considering the region for a massive project. Ed Latson, executive director of the Austin Regional Manufacturers Association, could not confirm if Applied Materials is actively considering an expansion in Williamson County. However, he noted such a project would be a massive economic development win. “Applied Materials is a major employer and has one of the largest supply chains in the region. The complex, sophisticated tools they build are filled with parts and subcomponents that are made locally. So any potential expansion or investment would be an economic boon for a wide array of companies,” Latson said in a statement. “This is yet another sign of how global demand for semiconductors and semiconductor equipment is driving growth in Central Texas.” Applied Materials already has more manufacturing space in the Austin area than all but seven companies, according to Austin Business Journal research. At last count it had roughly 2,800 local employees. The company, founded in 1967, established its presence in Austin

in 1992. Its campus is at 9700 E. U.S. Hwy. 290. Construction began last year on a 729,000-square-foot new warehouse at the campus. In 2021,Austin City Council nominated the company for state incentives under theTexas Enterprise Fund program for the roughly $150 million expansion. Tech corridor takes shape Should Applied Materials choose Hutto — which saw its population grow from 14,698 in 2010 to 27,577 in 2020, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures — it would add to the sense that the Austin area is becoming the “new center of gravity” for critical tech in the country. In addition to Samsung’s forthcoming plant inTaylor,Tesla Inc. recently began manufacturing at its $1.1 billion plant in eastern Travis County. Business and government leaders have indicated many more electric vehicle and semiconductor companies are eyeing space on the outskirts of Austin. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

Powder Metal Manufacturing, Controlled Atmosphere Sintering For over 50 years Western Sintering has been an industry leader for powder Metallurgy. Precision and Control

Controlled Atmosphere Sintering is the process of forming a solid mass of material by heat and/or pressure without melting it to the point of liquefaction. The study of sintering in metallurgy powder-related processes is known as powder metallurgy. An example of sintering can be observed when ice cubes in a glass of water adhere to each other. Sintering happens naturally in mineral deposits or as a manufacturing process used with metals, ceramics, plastics, and other materials. The atoms in the materials diffuse across the boundaries of the particles, A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

fusing the particles together and creating one solid piece. The sintering temperature does not have to reach the melting point of the material being sintered and thus the pressed component maintains its shape during sintering. . In this process the parts are placed on ceramic trays and ran through a sintering furnace where the parts are heated in a controlled atmosphere up to a sinter ing temperature suited to the material and just below the metals melting point. The sintering temperature allows the powder metal particles to bond together and form a solid metal finished part.Yes, their expert engineers create a process that allows for high volume, consistent repeatable perfect parts every time.Their CNC machine shop can do what we call a ‘Kiss’ in the industry, to add any extra feature requirements they are not able to mold such as threads and undercuts. The powder is made from recycled metal and the press and sinter to net shape process, without the need for machining from a large piece of raw metal, is why Powder Metal is a “Recognized Green Technology”. WSC uses the same feed stock powder as Additive 3D Manufacturing process, but with hard tooling, high speed presses and robotic automation parts are pressed quickly, uniformly, consistently, and faster than most forms of manufacturing.

production that will allow no human error, and aid in the production of finished parts that meet their customers production schedules of higher volume parts, on time. Why sintering is important in powder metallurgy?

AtWestern Sintering we use controlled atmosphere sintering in our sintering furnaces. Our furnaces are electric heat with Hydrogen and Nitrogen used as a protective atmosphere in the sintering of our compacted powder metal parts. The Nitrogen acts as a cover gas and the Hydrogen acts as an oxide reducer for the parts being sintered. One analogy for these two sintering atmosphere gases is to think of the Nitrogen as Water and the Hydrogen as Soap in helping to keep the pressed powder metal parts clean of oxides/oxidation while going through the sintering process. With our ability to fine tune the amount of each of these gases in our furnaces along with precise temperature control we can tailor our sintering to the needs of the different parts that we sinter. Reduce Manufacturing Costs Powder metallurgy is the process of blending fine powdered materials, pressing them into a desired shape or form (compacting), and then heating the compressed material in a controlled atmosphere to bond the material (sintering). The four basic steps of the powder metallurgy process are Powder Manufacture, Powder Blending, Compacting, and then sintering. Compacting is generally performed at room temperature, and the elevatedtemperature process of sintering is usually conducted at atmospheric pressure. Optional secondary processing often follows to obtain special properties or enhanced precision. The use of powder metal technology bypasses the need to produce the resulting products by metal removal processes, thereby reducing manufacturing costs. As an ISO9001 company,Western Sintering maintains an expertise in many varieties of metals from alloy steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, nickel silver (white brass), bronze, aluminum, and many others. WSC aligns approved outside processing partners to apply finish plating or powder coating to the powder metal parts. The end result is quality parts, that meet their customers’ expectations. Carefully packaged and shipped to arrive just in time to their customers’ production line. Western Sintering has maintained their quality service by continuing to add state of the art processing, from 200-ton compacting press machines, 17 zone sintering controlled atmosphere furnaces, to now robotics that aid in handling the pressed parts off the presses. This all adds to the goal of WSC to move the production of their customers parts into a perfect state of

The sinter ing process can determine the optimal structure and properties of the desired finished product. These include the material’s strength, electric and thermal conductivity, ductility, and toughness. Controlling the sintering process is, therefore, key to the entire powder metallurgy process. Advantages of the Powder Metallurgy Process • Minimizes machining by producing parts at, or close to, final dimensions • Minimizes scrap losses by typically using more than 97% of the starting raw material in the finished part • Permits a wide variety of alloy systems • Produces good surface finish • Provides mater ials which may be heat treated for increased strength or increased wear resistance • Provides controlled porosity for self-lubrication or filtration • Facilitates manufacture of complex or unique shapes which would be impractical or impossible with other metalworking processes • Is suited to moderate- to high-volume component production requirements • Offers long-term performance reliability in critical applications • Is cost effective If you are looking for an excellent choice for powder metal parts production where precision is required, look nowhere else but, Western Sintering Company.

2022 Manufacturing Industry Outlook Eyeing Growth Despite Turbulence The manufacturing industry is building back fast, undeterred by significant labor and supply chain challenges. To maintain this momentum, manufacturers should navigate elevated risks while advancing sustainability priorities. Our 2022 outlook explores five manufacturing industry trends that can help organizations turn risks into advantages and capture growth. Competing in the new market demands business agility It’s unusual to see positive economic indicators paired with historic labor and supply chain challenges. But this is the trajectory for the US manufacturing industry in 2022 emerging from the pandemic. The recovery gained momentum in 2021 on the heels of vaccine rollout and rising demand. As industrial production and capacity utilization surpassed pre-pandemic levels midyear, strong increases in new orders for all major subsectors signal growth continuing in 2022. However, optimism around revenue growth is held in check by caution from ongoing risks. Workforce shortages and supply chain instability are reducing operational efficiency and margins. Business agility can be A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Five manufacturing industry trends to watch Workforce shortage Record numbers of unfilled jobs are likely to limit higher productivity and growth in 2022, and last year we estimated a shortfall of 2.1 million skilled jobs by 2030. To attract and retain talent, manufacturers should pair strategies such as reskilling with a recasting of their employment brand. Shrinking the industry’s public perception gap by making manufacturing jobs a more desirable entry point could be critical to meeting hiring needs in 2022. Engagement with a wider talent ecosystem of partners to reach diverse, skilled talent pools can help offset the recent wave of retirements and voluntary exits. Manufacturing executives may also need to balance goals for retention, culture, and innovation. As flexible work is taking root in offices, manufacturers should explore ways to add flexibility across their organization in order to attract and retain workers. Organizations that can manage through workforce shortages and a rapid pace of change today can come out ahead. Two. Manufacturers are remaking supply chains for advantage beyond the next disruption Supply chain challenges are acute and still unfolding. There’s no mistaking that manufacturers face near-continuous disruptions globally that add costs and test abilities to adapt. Purchasing manager reports continue to reveal systemwide complications from high demand, rising costs of raw materials and freight, and slow deliveries in the United States.Transportation challenges are likely to continue in 2022, including driver shortages in trucking and congestion at US container ports. As demand outpaces supply, higher costs are more likely to be passed on to customers. Root causes for extended US supply chain instability may include overreliance on low inventories, rationalization of suppliers, and hollowing out of domestic capability. Supply chain strategies in 2022 are expected to be multipronged. Digital supply networks and data analytics can be powerful enablers for more flexible, multitiered responses to disruptions. Supply chain instability Three. Acceleration in digital technology adoption could bring operational efficiencies to scale

Four. Rising threats are leading the industry to new levels of preparedness High-profile cyberattacks across industries and governments in the past year have elevated cybersecurity as a risk management essential for most executives and boards. Surging threats during the pandemic added to business risk for manufacturers in the crosshairs for ransomware. An expanding attack surface from the connection of operational technology (OT), information technology (IT), and external networks requires more controls. Legacy systems and technology weren’t purpose-fit for today’s sophisticated network challenges. Now, remote work vulnerabilities leave manufacturers even more susceptible to breaches.

Manufacturers should look not only at their cyber defenses, but also at the resiliency of their business in the event of a cyberattack. Cybercriminals can cause harm beyond intellectual property theft and financial losses, using malware that now ties in AI and cryptocurrencies. They can also shut down operations and disrupt entire supplier networks, compromising safety as well as productivity. A patchwork of regulations for different industries could be consolidated under the current administration’s “whole-of-nation” approach to protect critical infrastructure. The potential for additional oversight is likely to prompt more industrials to rethink preparedness for crisis response. Cybersecurity Five. Smart factory initiatives Manufacturer s looking to capture growth and protect longterm profitability should embrace digital capabilities from corporate functions to the factory floor. Smart factories, including greenfield and brownfield investments for many manufacturers, are viewed as one of the keys to driving competitiveness. More organizations are making progress and seeing results from more connected, reliable, efficient, and predictive processes at the plant. Emerging and evolving use cases can continue to scale up from isolated in-house technology projects to full production lines or factories, given the right mix of vision and execution. US manufacturers have room to run with advanced manufacturing compared to many competitors globally. Advanced global “lighthouse” factories showcase the art of the possible in bringing smart manufacturing to scale. Investment in robots, cobots, and artificial intelligence can continue to transform operations. Foundational technologies such as cloud computing enable computational power, visibility, scale, and speed. Industrial 5G deployment may also expand in 2022 along with advances in technology and use cases.

Manufacturers are likely to bring more resources and rigor to advancing sustainability ESG investment The fast rise of environ Mental, social, and governance (ESG) factors is redefining and elevating sustainability in manufacturing as never before. Cost of capital can be tied to ratings on ESG, making it a priority for organizational financial health and competitiveness. Expectations for reporting on diversity, equity, and inclusion metrics in manufacturing will likely continue to rise. Board diversity, while progressing slowly, is also showing some momentum. To attract talent and appeal to workforce expectations, most manufacturers are making ESG efforts more visible. Depending on a manufacturer’s end markets, environmental accountability is increasingly a focus. To develop and deliver against net-zero or carbon-neutral goals, more organizations are dedicating or redesigning sustainability roles and initiatives and quantifying efforts and results around energy consumption. And the fast-evolving ESG landscape may require close monitoring in 2022 for manufacturers. Many organizations are complying voluntarily within a complex network of reporting regulations, ratings, and disclosure frameworks. But regulators globally are also moving toward requiring disclosure for more nonfinancial metrics. Proactive approaches may help manufacturers stay ahead of the change and create competitive advantage. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Great Attitudes Inspire – Take 2 By Stephen Hannemann A little over two years ago I changed the focus of this page to championing continuous personal improvement. The goal was to pen a page that contained positive and inspirational content to improve peoples’ personal lives as well as their work relationships. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time was the angst that would be visited upon the world in the following months. However, the gratification of sharing stories of companies and the people who lead them through unprecedented challenges, and to not just survive but thrive, during the turbulent past two years has been truly inspiring. A positive attitude is king in the workplace. Employees with an upbeat attitude are always easier to be with and are often sought out when help is needed. They not only motivate but inspire. One paramount theme is how inspiration travels in two directions. Good leaders inspire rather than motivate. Good leaders also derive inspiration from the people they hire, especially when those leaders respect, affirm, and empower them. 3D Plastics in Newberg, OR has an annual event – the Most Inspirational Employee of the Year Award! This is an honor that is bestowed upon someone who is generally unaware of any recognition headed their way. The recipients are chosen by their peers and are only being who they are – affable, helpful, upbeat. This is a person who is willing to make an extra effort to make a colleague’s life at work a little easier or more enjoyable. It’s more than attitude, it is the essence of a person who is grateful and comfortable with who they are in any environment! Kelly Dundas President 3D Plastics

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Well, here he is for the second year in a row. Meet Henry Pepinos, again! Henry is 3D’s Setup Technician, the person who removes an injection mold from the molding machines after a run completion and sets a new mold in place for the next production run. He also maintains the molds in between setups when not in use. Henry is also a man with a BIG grateful heart, who is willing on a minute’s notice to help anywhere when needed. He is a husband and father of two sons ages 3 and 7. Henry’s smile says it all! Cassie Baker, 3D’s Quality Manager, said of Henry, “I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to get to work closely with Henry since he started in October, 2020. Henry pushes us all professionally with his positive attitude and spreading happiness all while getting his job done and offering help where he can. He makes it such a pleasure to be at work each and every day. I honestly couldn’t ask for a better team member. My daughter and I have developed a great friendship with Henry and we value him as a friend.” Congratulations again, Henry. All at 3D thank you for your contribution of upbeat positivity. Would you like to work with Henry Pepinos? If you reside in the west Portland, Tigard, Sherwood, McMinnville, or Newberg areas of Oregon, give them a look – 3D is hiring.
