Cloning for quality Cloning is the best way for me to guarantee the quality animal I want. - GEORGE MERCIECA, GTM BRAHMANS

BREEDING THE BEST: George Mercieca (pictured here with his granddaughter) runs GTM Brahmans, and is known for producing some of the best breed examples in Australia. The GTM team are currently working on cloning their best breeding heifers, and hope to have calves on the ground within the next two years.

told him if he achieved good school marks, and headed in the right direction, then we would buy a property and get a few Brahmans. “From that day on, Chris sent emails all over the world to breeders,” George said. One breeder from South Africa was so impressed by Chris’s pluck that he agreed to send him semen from his top bull - for free. Several years later, with Chris maintaining his interest and his school grades - the Mercieca family bought a farm. “He literally changed the course of our lives,” George said. “Before that, we had nothing to do with Brahmans. “But how do you say no when your son has worked so hard?” After purchasing a property, George and Chris packed their bags and headed out across Australia. From the outset, George knew to make a mark on the industry they would need the best.

BY the end of 2019, George Mercieca hopes to have cloned his two best breeding Brahmans. Rather than replicating the bloodline, George wants to know exactly what he will get; with cloning, all the guesswork has been taken out. “A lot of people can be a bit funny when you start talking about cloning, but this is the best way for me to guarantee the quality animal I want,” George said. “There are not a lot of really high-end animals around, and I want the best - with cloning, we know exactly what will be hitting the ground.” George runs GTM Brahmans, a stud based out of Kyneton. Although the herd size is small, keeping numbers to less than 50 has allowed GTM to focus on quality rather than quantity. It is a long way from the man who liquidated his classic car collection to get into cattle breeding - and all at the insistence of his young son. “Chris, my son, started talking about this when he was five years of age - he knew he wanted to breed cattle even then,” George said. “I did a deal with him - I

A TOTAL sale clearance of all 168 bulls offered at the recent Te Mania sale has seen the stud cap-off the bull season on a high. The exceptionally even lineup of bulls attracted a large crowd of 174 bidders registered on property and on AuctionsPlus.

The top priced bull, Lot 49, Te Mania Malin M170, was purchased by Elizabeth Roche of Arden Angus, Adelong, NSW for $32,000. This striking son of Te Mania Jerilderie J10 impressed with good frame, body length, and balance - with growth figures in the top one per cent of the

breed for 200D (+104), 600D (+139) and IMF per cent of +3.9. In total, six bulls sold for more than $18,000, and each were in the top one per cent of the Angus breed for the four Selection Indexes which target returns of profitability for commercial beef producers. “This is exactly what our

progeny testing is all about – testing and identifying future sires with balanced EBVs – to produce high growth, high meat quality, structurally sound cattle, Te Mania spokesman, Tom Gubbins, said. “An extra $1 Index value contributes an extra $1 per calf for that particular market.

Te Mania high performers sell to a high of $32,000

From page 1 “We wanted the bloodlines that were better than good, and that was a very expensive endeavour, he said. “We were going up to the top studs and telling them we wanted to buy their best one or two cows - not the 100 good quality animals they may have had - but the best. A Bathurst Cobra, a GT 500 Shelby, a Baby Thunderbird - all classic cars George had collected over his lifetime; and all cars he sold to help finance GTM Brahmans. “We had to have an open cheque book, he said. “You know what they say, in for a penny, in for a pound. “But when you are a family, a parent, you do what you can to fulfil your family’s dreams. Among the GTM Brahman pur-

chases was the only daughter of the South African cow R10 Red Queen. Described as the most important cow in Africa in the last 120 years, Red Queen won the Gold cup in South Africa - beating all breeds, bulls and cows. Chris is all grown up now, and works as a chartered accountant in Woodend. George has remained at home on the farm; Brahmans have become more than a breeding business – they have become part of the family. With almost two decades breeding under his belt, George is now as quick as any Northern Territory cattleman to reel off facts as to why Brahmans are superior. “Crossing to a Brahman results in a 20 per cent size increase in the resulting calf – and they have

a food conversion rate of one pound of food for one of weight – British breeds are two to one, George said. “At 12 months of age, an Angus calf is around 330 kilos – we have sold cross-breds at 450 at the same age, just on grass out of the paddock. GTM Brahmans have a lot planned for the next two years. Breeding expansion, an AI program using new bloodlines and cloning are all on the agenda. “We are working with one of the world’s leading scientists, talking about our best options, George said. “When you get to a certain level, you need to find genetics to go that next step forward - there’s a lot of animals out there, but they aren’t necessarily what we want. Some 16 embryos need to be

implanted to have a viably cloned calf. At a cost of around $5000 per unit just for the procedure, the costs are considerable. But the result, George said, is worth it. “When you breed a full sibling, you still don’t know what you are going to get, he said. “Cloning is a quality guarantee. The plan is to put the resulting heifers to South African bulls, further improving the breed. “This isn’t a matter of how, this is a matter of when, George said. “We are very excited to be doing this, to be at the forefront of advancing the Brahman breed. If you would like to contact GTM Brahmans, or would like to stay up to date with their progress, visit their Facebook page of the same name.

cated planning enforcement officer, whose role would be to focus solely on the Green Wedge and its proposed farm management plans. “The planning enforcement team (at the shire) is significantly under-resourced, and is having to prioritise some cases and therefore neglect the balance of cases,” VFF branch president, Eddie Matt, said. “Planning permits for accommodation, section 173 agreements and farm management plans are being determined by statutory planners without appropriate back up. “The Green Wedge zone is a rural zone, not a residential zone.” Currently, 70 per cent of the Mornington Peninsula Shire is listed as being in the Green Wedge – and the VFF intends it to remain so. However, the Mornington Peninsula Shire has hit back – saying planning compliance is always enforced. “Council has a well-resourced planning compliance team who actively ensure compliance in the Green Wedge,” Paul Lewis, Mornington Peninsula Shire manager planning compliance, said. “If a dwelling is approved in the Green Wedge, and a condition requires the land to be also used for agriculture, it is a standard requirement for a farm management plan to be prepared. “Council’s planning compliance team work closely with the landowners to bring the land into compliance with the FMP (farm management plans).” Deputy mayor at the shire,

Kate Roper, said the council did its best to ensure the Green Wedge would remain an agricultural zone. “As a resident in the Green Wedge, I am particularly interested in protecting the GW from inappropriate development,” she said. “Unfortunately, there are always those who may choose to flaunt compliance regulations and we have made improvements in this department a priority. “We do have excellent officers to attend any complaints, but the process for bringing non-compliant residents into line is sometimes slow and subject to delay due to pressure in the court system.” Ms Roper said all councillors recognised that it was an urgent matter to protect the Green Wedge, and to agricultural use of the areas. “There has been some suggestion of introducing a scheme of rate reduction to encourage land consolidation to larger lots to make farms more viable,” she said. “We intend to look at a number of options to improve things for our farmers. “We are aware of the large amount of food MP produces for Melbourne, Australia and overseas and we intend to protect our farming economy.” Interestingly, the Mornington Peninsula Shire has also created a new, and according to their own advertisement, “rare” position for an in-house lawyer to be employed with the purpose of dealing with matters relating to “in-house planning and building”.

NEVER HAPPENED: Residents on the Mornington Peninsula are concerned the local council is not enforcing planning laws, after a number of rural businesses – including a proposal for an alpaca stud – never made it further than a family residence.

Council has a wellresourced planning compliance team who actively ensure compliance in the Green Wedge.

THE Mornington Peninsula Shire has again come under fire, this time for failing to enforce their own planning requirements. The Southern Farmer recently ran a front page story when the Peninsula branch of the VFF requested two additional shire planning staff be employed to maintain and monitor development applications within the Green Wedge zone. Since then, a number of concerned residents have contacted the Farmer - all of them troubled by the apparent lack-lustre approach to planning follow up. One such local property owner said he had multiple examples where planning applications had been lodged promising a rural business - a requirement to build in the Green Wedge - but that, years after, little or nothing more than a dwelling had been built. “These planning applications are quite deliberate,” he said. “They know that to have a home approved on their 10 acre block in the Green Wedge, they need to have an agricultural purpose. “What they are doing, of course, is lodging the application, accepting permit conditions requiring a genuine agricultural activity, building the home and then forgetting about the rest - and the council just aren’t doing anything about it.” Currently, there is an application with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal dealing with just that issue; a Mornington Peninsula Shire Green Wedge development with permit conditions that have not been enforced. The applicant is not the shire, but rather the concerned local who believes that, above all, the Green Wedge needs to be maintained. “It costs me a considerable amount of money to pursue at VCAT, but if we all sit back and do nothing, then nothing will change,” he said. Other examples where planning permit conditions have allegedly not been enforced include a proposed nursery, a vineyard and winery, and an alpaca breeding and fibre farm. In all cases, the application for a residence was approved based on an agricultural purpose - a purpose that has not come to fruition. To help avoid similar incidents in the future, the Peninsula VFF has formally asked the shire to employ a dedi-

Mountain Herefords sale celebrates 78 years HEREFORD vendors pocketed an extra $50 a head for their steers above other British breeds in a stellar 78th annual Mountain Calf Sales, held last week across Victoria’s far flung mountain country. Held at Benambra, Ensay and Omeo on March 13-14, the mountain calf sales yarded a total of 8504 cattle to average $703. Autumn drop whiteface steer prices peaked at Omeo at $1390. Going into the sales, dry seasonal conditions and a softening cattle market had created nerves for vendors. The majority of calves had been weaned early and either supplemented or run on river flats. Vendors agreed last year was an historic high unlikely to be repeated, and rounded their expectations down generally by $200-$300, or similar to 2016 prices. But, a shortage of cattle combined with the low Australian dollar and widespread rain in northern Australia resulted in a moderate windfall for the Victorian high country producers at the two-day event. The majority of cattle sold to Gippsland, Victoria’s North East, King Island, South Australia, the Riverina and northern NSW/southern Queensland. Repeat steer finishers did not hold back when it came to bidding on the heavy end. Typical of those was one Victorian fattener who outlaid $1400 for Barry and Topsy Newcomen’s autumn drop steers in 2016, and sold them last June over-the-hooks to average $2508 at 776kg liveweight. He was quick to reinvest, buying the opening pens at the Ensay sale for $1360 and $1260 to grass finish over winter. Producers offered 509 more calves this year across the sales

circuit, despite some vendors electing to sell earlier at the January weaner sales. The whiteface offering hit its peak when 1143 Hereford and Hereford cross steers and heifers were sold at Ensay on March 14 for an overall average of $962. The sale averaged $1014 for steers and $763 for heifers. This outpaced the steer average at the Omeo Angus sale on March 13 by $56 and the overall sale average by a stellar $85. The final leg at Omeo yarded 2077 head to average $926 with steers at $984. In comparison, Omeo’s Angus sale yarded 3808 cattle for an overall average of $877, a $957 steer average and $766 for the heifers. Autumn drop Angus steers topped at $1160 while white-

face vendors were well in front with a 2018 top price of $1390. So, how were the whiteface calves tracking on a cents per kilogram basis? Unfortunately, just two vendors regularly display indicative green weights on their steers each year. Jim Pendergast, Penderscourt, Hinnomunjie, listed a green weight for this top pen of January-February drop steers at 459kg at the Benambra Calf Sale. They sold for $1240 to give an estimated curfewed price of 284c/kg.

His seconds (May-June drop) weighed 403kg and sold for $1100 to return a curfewed price of 287c/kg while the thirds weighed 370kg to make a curfewed 333c/kg. Barry Newcomen, Ensay, weighed a sample of the tops of the draft at the Ensay Weaner Sale to average 440kg. The pen sold for $1360 to return a curfewed price of 325c/kg. The seconds weighed 395kg and returned a curfewed 330c/kg. But, the vast majority of backgrounders had set their budgets on a dollars per head basis with the orders centring around lighter steers at $800$900 and better quality types for lot feeding at $950-$1050. As Morgan Davies, Elders Bairnsdale, said, “throw the calculator away on the lighter cattle as it will scare you”. The Mountain Calf Sales are one of the few sales where large runs of European Union accredited whiteface cattle can be sourced. And, it paid off with many lot feeders competing strongly on the EU cattle and up to 500 – or almost half the yarding – remaining in the system at Ensay alone.

Farmers take stock of bushfire losses FARMERS across the state’s south west are now faced with a devastating climb back to production. More than 10 properties were completely destroyed in bushfires that burned late last month out of Warrnambool, with some 40,000 hectares razed. With dairy cows either killed, maimed or left un-milked for more than 72 hours, farmers are now looking for support from the government as they face an uncertain future. Victorian Farmers Federation president, David Jochinke, said his organisation was looking for those who needed feed, and those who could donate. The VFF has an agreement with the State Government to facilitate the fodder relief – which includes reimbursement of freight costs for transport of donated fodder. More information about support available for affected farmers can be found at www.vff.org.au/ support, or you can call 1300 882 833.

Getting the most out of lambing numbers A TRIAL out of Willaura, south-west Victoria, is looking at ways to improve twin lamb survival rates for farmers with mixed cropping and sheep businesses. Preliminary results from the first 12 months of the Willaura Best Wool Best Lamb group’s improving twin lamb survival project show lower mob sizes lead to better survival, but the cost of temporary fencing to achieve the change could be prohibitive. The project is part of the MLA Producer Demonstration Site program, and is being undertaken on four farms in the Willaura region. Steve Cotton, from Dynamic Ag Consulting, is managing the project and said farmers around Willaura with mixed cropping and sheep businesses wanted to improve their twin lamb survival rates – with around onethird of lambs not surviving. “The farmers are getting good scanning results, but fail to get the numbers through the marking cradle,” Dr Cotton said. The trials are using temporary fences for five weeks during lambing to halve mob sizes and gauge the impact on survival - the project will continue for the next two years. Dr Cotton said preliminary analysis of the first 12 months of data shows that when the mob size is halved, there is improved survival. However, when the stocking rate becomes low relative to the size of the paddock, the

number of lambs weaned per hectare goes down. “Preliminary data suggests we’re better off to maintain a relatively modest stocking rate but halve the mob size to improve survival and then maximise the number of lambs weaned per hectare,” Dr Cotton said. The trials are being conducted on four different paddocks on each farm with variations of higher, same and lower stocking rates and temporary fences to change mob size. “We know if farmers go lower in mob sizes they get better survival but that’s not necessarily practical for large scale commercial livestock and cropping enterprises be-

cause of the size of these paddocks,” Dr Cotton said. “We’re trying to develop guidelines to optimise the survival of twin-born lambs while considering the costs of putting up temporary fencing. “In the first year we have seen a response across all farms, although there is variation and we want to verify figures during the second and third years. “It’s early days but it’s exciting and this project has the potential to improve the number of lambs at marking to improve profit.” For more information contact Steve Cotton at s.cotton@ dynamicag.com.au or on 0447 352 321.

HYDROPONICS AND GREENHOUSES

April 2018

Grow a garden all year with a Sproutwell Greenhouse

SUCCESS ALL YEAR: You can grow fresh fruit, vegetables and all your flowers and herbs 12 months a year when you use a Sproutwell Greenhouse.

GREENHOUSES are designed to provide a controlled horticultural environment where you can adjust the temperature and humidity. This allows you to grow plants, fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers and herbs with ease. The beauty of greenhouses is that whatever you grow is protected from the harsh summer sun, drenching rains, cool frosts and high winds. Within the structured environment, seedlings sprout faster and you can grow a more diverse range of plants than you might otherwise be able to in your climate zone. Sproutwell Greenhouses is a family business that has enjoyed helping gardening enthusiasts and commercial growers alike to achieve their vision of an efficient and flourishing garden. Based in Victoria, Sproutwell has two display locations – in Geelong and Officer – though interstate customers can view

its range of greenhouses in a growing number of retail stores across the country. Sproutwell has supplied thousands of greenhouses to everyday Australia, professional growers, community gardens and large insurance companies. The company offers three very exciting ranges of greenhouses, according to your requirements. Often the range that appeals to you will be determined by the size, budget, location, weather – particularly if your garden is subject to high winds – style and colour. Sproutwell is different from the average greenhouse company in that it keeps designs unique and is transparent when it comes to showing customers exactly what makes each range different. Many of Sproutwell’s designs are patented, which means you’ll be getting a greenhouse like no other. Visit the website to check

out Sproutwell’s new range of ShadeHouses, MultiZone Greenhouses (a combination of winter and summer house), stylish outdoor room ranges and the new innovative M Series that allows any number of greenhouses to be joined together side by side. Sproutwell Greenhouses’ Venlo Series offers flexibility in terms of length and width (which is unlimited) as well as options for 8mm polycarbonate glazing or toughened 4mm safety glass. There is an option to add internal partition doors which provide more control by creating isolation zones. The greenhouses in this unique range are suitable structures for test facilities, research greenhouses and bio security plant quarantine containment as well. For more information, see the group at this year’s Farm World at Lardner Park, visit their website or give the Sproutwell team a call on 1300 657 174.

New greenhouse film hits market GEOFF Miller, in conjunction with RKW Hyplast (Belgium/Germany), has developed a new three layer greenhouse film that promises to revolutionise both commercial and domestic growing capacity. Known as Hytilux clear AC/AD, the product comes standard with anti-fog and

anti-dust barriers. The film also has a high light transmission with thermal and chemical resistance properties. Hytilux clear comes in three gauges: 150um, 180 micron and 200 micron, and offers a minimum two year warranty on the 150um, and three years for 180um and 200um.

The film comes in standard 7.5m widths or the company can weld a cover to any size. Jumbo rolls of 300m are also available. The cost for this new high tech film is comparable to the Australian made film, which is being gradually phased out due to its manufacturing being discontinued.

Geoff Miller still stocks black/white reflective film for the floor of greenhouses, which are designed to be used with white side facing up to reflect growing light. This will provide more light to the plant which will encourage and enhance growth, while the black layer facing down will sup-

press weed growth. Having film on the floor of your greenhouse can prevent water seepage and the spread of soil borne contamination of plants. As with the greenhouse film, black/white panda film is made from virgin materials and is UV stabilised for long life.

Geoff Miller Pty Ltd and RKW have a quality reputation carved out after more than 20 years in the industry, and offer excellence in outdoor wide width UV stabilised films for agriculture and horticultural uses. For more information go to the webpage at www. geoffmiller.com.au.

Australia’s Premier Mixed Farming Field Days

More than 800 exhibitors at Farm World 2018 THIS year, Farm World will offer an even bigger and better event as visitors take advantage of live displays, information workshops, family entertainment and plenty of retail therapy. Celebrating its 51st year, Farm World at Lardner Park is widely regarded as one of Victoria’s premier regional agricultural events, attracting more than 55,000 visitors and over 800 exhibitors over four days kicking off on April 12. The event offers a strong focus on the latest in technology, equipment and information and provides an ideal opportunity to get up close and chat with the experts. Of course, Farm World is not just for the large scale farmer – there’s also plenty for the urban pioneers and lifestyle farmers interested in equipment, DIY passions, sustainable gardening and horticulture, drone innovation and masses of musthave tools. This year’s Farm World theme is Food, Fibre, Future – and to that end, demonstrations and presentations are active throughout the entire event including the much anticipated Food & Fibre Fiesta. During Saturday and Sunday at Farm World, the Lardner Park Conference Centre will be converted into a Food & Fibre Fiesta showcasing produce, products and information sessions. The fiesta promises a festive ambience of exhibitor sales, demonstrations and workshops running free-of-charge throughout the two days, including: z cooking with essential oils; z creating an edible garden that utilises water reticulation and aquaponics principles; z how to turn low-value lamb cuts into delicious smallgoods; z introducing baking skills to a new generation of online bakers;

FARM WORLD: More than 800 exhibitors and 55,000 visitors will flock to Lardner Park this month for the annual Farm World event. z bush tucker – a new trend using ancient ingredients; z how to make home-style pasta sauces and vegan jerky; and z turning beer waste into high protein and high fibre cookies. The Food & Fibre Fiesta will be decorated with bountiful produce from the Baw Baw Food Hub, and will include exhibitor stalls from the likes of Tarago Olives, Blue Tree Honey and Clearly Delicious. Outside of the cooking arena and the Farm World

Equestrian Expo will return, with show jumping, dressage, barrel racing, mounted games and an all new Saturday night extravaganza featuring some of Australia’s best riders and their most agile horses performing in the speed racing championships. A new Wellbeing Area is the place to go for some zen time or head on down to the Entertainment Arena for lots of fun and activities including chainsaw carving, whip cracking, live music, dog jumping, pipe band, 4WD demonstrations and more.

Another new installation at Farm World this year is “Farm World’s Fittest Farmer” competition. This event will be run on Saturday and Sunday near the Entertainment Arena - and will feature a series of heats conducted by local trainers on the search to find Gippsland’s fittest farmer. Women in Agriculture, presented by Telstra, is a much-loved luncheon on the Thursday. This year a panel of brilliant speakers are already lined up

– each will engage, inspire and motivate you to think outside the box, believe in your abilities and guide you through some of life’s challenges. The big Gippsland Jersey Milk OFF challenge - consisting of timed milking challenges (1 teat, 1 hand, 1 minute, most milk collected) along with commercial dairy farming education and presentations, will again be a crowd favourite and a solid feature throughout the event. A new component of Farm World in 2018 is a dedicated

Drone Zone, located adjacent to the Lakeside Arena. The area will feature the latest in drone developments in both technology and practice and will showcase how the utilisation of drones is such a game-changer for agribusiness across the globe. TELEHANDLER: A new innovation in farming, the Bobcat Telehandler range is about maximising efficiency while providing a fresh look on the traditional loader.

Telehandler is more than a tractor ALTHOUGH they aren’t your typical farm machine, the latest ranges of telehandlers from Bobcat are much more than just a tractor. The latest range offers improved performance, new features and even better cab styling. The Perkins engine stage IIIA is available in 100hp and 130hp power rates, and the patented Quick Tach power mounting system means non-hydraulic attachments can be changed without leaving the cab. Inside the cab there is a multi-functional joystick and a brand new user-friendly electronic dashboard - at the touch of a button, you can access the engine or job hours, vehicle speed, boom angle, speed management, auxiliary hydraulic flow setting, permanent flow and more. A major selling point of the Bobcat Telehandler is the speed management system – enabling farmers to keep up the revs, and engine

power, while still moving slowly. High flow technology gives extra power to get the most demanding jobs done, thanks to best-in-class boom cycle times. When all hydraulic functions are used simultaneously, the quick-start and flow-sharing systems supply the full oil output immediately for maximum productivity. The heavy duty hydrostatic transmission delivers power quickly and when you need it, with high wheel torque for digging and pushing. All Bobcat Telehandlers are designed and produced in Pontchâteau, France. With more than 50 years of experience in creating material handling machines, this factory applies the Bobcat quality standards the company has built its reputation on. For more information visit the website at www.clarkfarmequipment.com.au/category/105/ Bobcat-Telehandlers.

Fire brigades use Aussie Pumps

AUSSIE SEA SKIPPER: Aussie Pumps’ Craig Bridgement shows off the new corrosion resistant Aussie Sea Skipper – headed to Dumbalk Fire Brigade.

VOLUNTEER firefighters have to maintain gear in top readiness throughout the year. Portable fire pumps can often be left unused for long periods and are susceptible to internal corrosion, particularly in areas with brackish water or high salinity. Dumbalk Fire Brigade needed help; they were chasing a way to fill their pumps quickly so that they could be out on the job, fighting fires, when it counted. “Janet Auchtenonie – from the fire brigade – came to us at Aussie for some advice, Aussie Pumps spokesman, Craig Bridgement, said. “Dumbalk were looking for a fast fill tanker pump that would cope with being left primed for long periods without use. “To minimise maintenance and improve readiness, she chose a 4 Aussie Sea Skipper as their fast fill tanker pump. The high capacity portable diesel

drive fire pump is designed specifically for salt water applications. Recently released by Australian Pump Industries, the pump features corrosion resistant components combined with excellent performance characteristics. It is fitted with a bronze impeller and volute, the body components are manufactured of marine grade aluminium and are coated inside and out with an epoxy style corrosion resistant paint. The drain plug incorporates a sacrificial anode. Stainless steel fasteners complete the package with a hot dip galvanised frame, optionally stainless steel, for maximum longevity. The pump’s large, closed impeller delivers a maximum head of 50m (71 psi) and flows of up to 1250 lpm. This performance makes the pump ideal for village protection duties as well as fast filling tankers. The unit is powered by a 10hp

electric start Yanmar diesel engine with recoil backup. The engine delivers loads of power, but enables the pump to weigh in at just a little over 100 kilos. Dumbalk Fire Brigade is mounting the pump on a small trailer to facilitate deployment to suitable dams in a fire emergency. “Aussie Sea Skipper is self-priming so it’s a simple matter to drop the suction hose into a dam and to start the pre-primed pump, Mr Bridgement said. “The high capacity and pressure makes it an ideal fire pump, while the big flow enables it to double as a fast fill tanker pump. The product is already used by the Australian Navy for firefighting and salvage work. Further information on the Aussie Sea Skipper range is available from Australian Pump Industries or authorised distributors throughout Australia.

Smart solar makes farming anywhere a reality SMART solar technology has added flexibility to the Gallagher i Series range, making them a reliable option for those who farm in even the most remote and toughest places in Australia. The new MB (mains-battery) 1000i, MB1800i and MB2800i energisers are founded on the already established reputation of the existing Gallagher i Series energisers,

but have incorporated a batterysolar power source capability into the system. The new MB i Series have a swappable socket system, providing either a direct connection to mains power, or a connection to a solar charged battery for use in locations where mains power is not an option. The MB i Series have a solar regulator mounted with the solar

panels to monitor the amount of solar energy needed to charge the battery, while the unit itself has the smarts to know the status of the battery and regulate its power output accordingly. The Gallagher unit is also equipped with sensors that identify low-sunshine hours, and can adjust the level of power output and pulse frequency to maximise the battery’s

life and maintain fence operation. The Gallagher range also includes a remote fault-finding feature that enables the farm to be separated into zones that report back to the energiser unit. It also enables alerts to be sent, should a fault be found, and ensures any fault is a lot easier to identify within a certain area.

Gallagher’s MB i Series will be on display at Gallagher’s new Farm World site: Site 701 – 703, along with Gallagher’s complete range of fence energisers, touch screen weigh scales, insulated line posts and more. Territory manager, Nick Brown, will be at Farm World to answer all of your Gallagher questions.

SOLAR FARMING: Gallagher have released a new range of solar products that are designed to increase farm productivity, slash energy costs and save time. Pictured is Nick Browne, Gallagher territory manager, with an MB1000i and Solar Kit.

See who can milk the fastest at Farm World

RELAX: One of the best things about Farm World is the mix of interest and exhibitor sites – from stalls for the kids to large scale machinery.

THE annual Farm World Gippsland Jersey Milk Off is on again at this year’s event. The concept is simple - it’s a hand milking competition – one hand – one teat – one minute. The contestant who can extract the most milk within one minute wins the ‘Milk Off’ trophy. At last year’s inaugural event, everyone from local councillors to baristas and school children all got beneath a cow to fight it out against their contemporaries for the glory of the Milk Off trophy. Alongside the crowd-pleasing hilarity of the Gippsland Jersey Milk Off, there will also be displays educating the crowd on the history of the dairy industry, and the contribution it makes to both the local economy and the Victorian milk supplies.

Events at Farm World SOMETIMES, you just need a break from it all – and what better way to do that than sitting down at Farm World and watching a live demonstration. Always wanted to know how to safely 4WD – lucky, there will be on site demonstrations, safety tips and how to presentations. Curious about how those dog trainers get their Kelpies to work – check out the working dog competition and pick up a few tips. Fancy yourself a bit of a stockman – compare your skills to those who are in the business professionally, and catch the live whip cracking show. There is also chainsaw carving, the Fittest Farmer competition, the Milk Off, the animal nursery and much more at this year’s Farm World. So when you just want to sit back and relax for a few moments, make sure you head to one of the live demonstration areas and learn something new.

MILK IT: The annual Farm World Milk Off will see farmers compete to see who can fill that bucket first.

Fly into Farm World’s Drone Zone A NEW introduction to Farm World in 2018 is the dedicated Drone Zone, located adjacent to the Lakeside Arena. In line with the latest developments in technology and practices, utilisation of drones is an industry game-changer, specifically agribusiness, emergency services and tradies across the globe.

A drone demonstration field will be located alongside the Drone Zone so you can see for yourself what amazing things can be achieved with this brilliant technology. From monitoring your stock remotely, to checking the air moisture at planting time – there is a use for drones in every farming operation.

Southern Farmer, Page 19

LEARN MORE: This year’s Farm World will include a Drone Zone, a specialised area where farmers can learn how this new technology can make a difference on even the smallest farm.

Bowed, but never beaten Ű

Sarah Cheshire is learning to live again

SARAH Cheshire was living the life of every mother’s dream. She had a home on a few acres in Jindivick, a loving husband and an adorable son, Edison. Her career as a registered nurse had spanned two decades, and she was respected both by her workplace and her community. But late last year, that all came to a crashing halt. Without any prior warning, Sarah’s lower back started to go numb – rendering her in progressively worse pain until she collapsed, paralysed from the chest down. Sarah had suffered a Spinal Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), which is a rare, abnormal tangle of blood vessels near the spinal cord. “When the doctor told me I’d possibly never walk again, I burst into tears,” Sarah said. “I cannot feel my lungs, or when I am hungry, or even when I need to use the toilet. “I have no control of my core muscles, and rely fully on the use of my arms.” Sarah spent five months in rehabilitation – five months without her home, her husband or her darling son.

Five months learning to live a new life. “Before, with Edison, Mummy had fixed everything, but after I came home that had changed; now Daddy fixed everything,” Sarah said. “I was away from him for months – it was heartbreaking.” But Sarah has always been a fighter, and her diagnosis of AVM is no exception. Now, she has learnt to change Edison’s nappies from her wheelchair; she can clean the kitchen, shower and go about her day-today life. “I’m housebound now, but I’ve still come a long way,” Sarah said. “Progress happens week by week, rather than day by day.” Edison now understands that mum can’t play on the floor as she once did – and though it has been a hard adjustment, it is one that Sarah is grateful for. “I have my days when I can’t believe I can’t walk, but still, I feel lucky I’m not sick – it’s not getting worse.” Right now, Sarah’s family and friends have started a GoFundMe page, trying to raise enough money

for a wheelchair accessible car – and an annual pass to the local hydrotherapy pool. More than just a means to get around, the car would allow Sarah to take Edison to and from kindergarten and, later, school. It would also give her independence. “I need to reclaim my life a little bit – I’m going to get a driver’s licence for hand controls on the car,” Sarah said. “I’ve got to get these things back in my life again.” Across the community, people have come to Sarah’s aid in ways big and small. From helping with Edison to feeding the family, each small act of kindness has meant more than the Cheshire family can ever express. “I miss the ease of life – of waking up in the morning and stretching, of walking into the kitchen and picking Ed up and swinging him around. “I miss the feel of grass and sand on my feet, the feel of water. “But we are still together – me, my husband Matt and Ed – we are all still here, and that’s what counts.”

Look for Buchanan Park at Farm World BUCHANAN Park principals, Allan and Jill Furborough, are looking forward to showcasing their Welsh Black cattle at the upcoming Farm World Lardner Park event. Buchanan Park Welsh Black stud was very successful recently at the Pakenham and District Show Society’s Hoof & Hook Carcass competition. Two Pure Bred Welsh Black steers were entered, with one steer awarded first place in the Class Hoof & Hook Carcass competition, live weight 390 – 460kg. MSA Grading decided the results of the 17 animals entered in this class at Radfords’ abattoirs, Warragul. “This was a fantastic result for our Welsh Black Breed,” Jill said. Call in and visit the Buchanan Park team at site A14-15.

Help put Sarah Cheshire back in a car Go to www. gofundme.com/ help-for-a-newlyparalysed-mum to donate.

HELP: Sarah Cheshire suffered an incredibly rare spinal problem, which has seen her paralysed from the chest down. However, the Jindivick community have got behind her – including Solartronics, who donated a special automatic gate opener to the family last month. Farm World through the years

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS: Farm World originally started in 1963, and has grown to become one of the biggest events in rural Victoria.

IN 1963, the year that marked the beginning of Beatlemania and the delivery of Martin Luther King Jr’s iconic “I have a dream” speech, a group of Gippsland farmers collaborated to exhibit farm machinery and plant the seed that would eventually grow to become Victoria’s premier regional agricultural event – Farm World. Originally known as The Gippsland Field Days, this iconic event started its life on a property near Longwarry, followed by a series of locations in the Warragul region over the next four years. In 1967, land was contributed by some visionary local farmers to form what is now known as

Lardner Park, ultimately giving Farm World a permanent home from which it could flourish - 51 years down the track, Farm World is going stronger than it ever has. The local community was passionate about growing the Lardner Park facility, and the site gradually expanded as land was purchased or generously bequeathed from neighbouring farmers as they passed on. From this brave initiative, back in the 1960s, Lardner Park has grown to 300 acres in size and consists of a modern convention centre capable of hosting up to 1000 delegates, over 5000sq/m of undercover pavilion space, an agroforestry plantation, R&D

crops and numerous other facilities. Among the more than 800 exhibitors taking part in Farm World this year are many of the machinery exhibitors who were involved in the original Gippsland Field Days. Aside from the ever expanding exhibitor list and continual increase in visitor numbers, Farm World has also experienced highlights throughout its life - including visits from Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Turnbull, both of who have attended to open the event. Farm World was also proud to welcome Quentin Bryce to speak at the Women in Agricul-

ture Luncheon during her time as Governor General. Over the course of the last 51 years, the farming community has persevered through good seasons and bad, through floods and seemingly endless droughts. They have seen the rise and fall of wool and beef prices, changes in consumer demands and most recently, the challenge of cuts to milk prices. Events such as Farm World do more than simply pass on new skills and product knowledge; they also serve to bring the farming community together to support each other in much the same way as that first visionary group of farmers did back in the 1960s.

AusEquip – quality products at an affordable price THE recent expansion of the AusEquip range has Australian farmers saving big – most notably on the latest range of YTO Tractors’ Turbo Power Shuttle tractors. The LF904C and the LF110C boast an impressive new design with a more spacious cabin, the latest moulded plastic technology roof and guards, reducing cabin noise, and an overall tough appearance. The LF range is superbly balanced and well proportioned, and feature outstanding Case Power Shuttle technology - along with the ever reliable Fiat Powertrain. These two new models display YTO’s continued commitment to advancement and improvements in the field, and are ideal for farmers needing

a reliable, proven technology enhanced tractor. Of course, no one knows how important reliability is than owner of AusEquip – and fellow farmer - Les Clarke. Mr Clarke has been an advocate for YTO Tractors Australia for some years now and is a regular face at many field days. With the nation’s trust growing in the tractor brand, this past year has allowed Les and his company to expand their range dramatically and begin providing quality implements and attachments - at wholesale prices - to farmers all across Australia. The launch of their equipment website www.ausequip. com.au last year created quite a stir with an extensive online range, and many farmers have

since purchased a YTO tractor. “Farmers are looking for quality at affordable prices and that’s what we, at AusEquip, offer,” Mr Clarke said. “They know that we are here first and foremost to help Aussie farmers.” Along with YTO Tractors, the team at AusEquip also stock mulchers, posthole diggers, slashers, power harrows, rotary hoes, trailers, backhoes, carry-alls, super spreaders and more. AusEquip can ship Australia wide - so don’t forget to ask us for a package deal when purchasing implements for your YTO Tractor. Alternatively, talk to the AusEquip team at Farm World this April, and let YTO Tractors take the hard work out of farming.

SAVE BIG: AusEquip offer farmers quality products at an affordable price, including a range of YTO Tractors like the Power Shuttle turbo LF 904C.

FIT: Farm World will host the inaugural Fittest Farmer competition this year, with men from each Gippsland Shire competing for the title.

RECORD SMASHED: NCC Justified smashed Australian records by selling for $325,000 back in October last year.

Brahmans conquering the elements since 1933

SINCE their introduction in 1933, the Brahman cattle breed has revolutionised the Australian cattle industry. First developed by crossing thin skinned, heat tolerant Indian breeds with traditional English cattle, the Australian Brahman as we know it today was developed by northern cattlemen who realised that traditional breeds were unable to withstand the ravages of northern Australia’s cattle

ticks, heat and drought. Today, the breed influence covers Australia with stud and commercial live cattle exports to many overseas countries - a clear indication of the breed’s adaptation over a wide spectrum of climatic conditions. The growth and development of the Australian Brahman has been described as the greatest livestock revolution in history. It has transformed the northern

beef industry to an efficient and highly profitable enterprise which contributes millions of dollars annually towards domestic and export income. In the more temperate weather conditions found in Victoria, Brahman offer improved drought resistance, a boost in production by up to 40 per cent, an ability to increase overall herd fertility, milk production and reproductive longevity.

More than that, they provide an outcrop in genetics that has the potential to increase stud value. In October 2017 NCC Justified smashed Australian records by selling for $325,000, with that single vendor sale averaging $27,000. For more information on how to maximise your herd, contact the Australian Brahman Breeders Association at abba@brahman.com. au.

Mishap inspired Graham to change IN the 1980s, Graham Maddock was like every other farmer – he worked hard on the family farm, did what he could to grow more pasture, and went to bed each night happy. Like his father before, Graham used fertilisers in autumn and insecticides when it was needed. But 30 years ago something happened that would send Graham on a completely different path; he was doused in chemical. “A tractor spray unit, carrying a potent insecticide, burst a vital high pressure line and I was almost completely soaked,” Graham said. During the months of illness, Graham had time to think about just how lucky he had been to escape permanent injury – but more importantly, if the insecticide made him sick, what was it

Charles Massy to speak at open day NUTRISOIL is hosting an open day on June 28, with world famous researcher, farmer and eco warrior, Charles Massy as keynote speaker. Charles is known as the farmer turned author who gained a Bachelor of Science (Zoology, Human Ecology) at ANU in the 1970s, before going farming for 35 years,

doing to his beef and dairy herds? “As odd as it sounds, it had just never occurred to me before then – that everything I sprayed and supered was ingested by our cattle; cattle that gave us milk and beef,” Graham said. “I had heard of the benefits of using worm castings – vermicast - as a natural fertiliser, and decided to trial it on an experimental crop of Chinese Water Chestnuts.

developing the prominent Merino sheep stud ‘Severn Park’. Concern at ongoing land degradation and humanity’s sustainability challenge led him to return to ANU in 2009 to undertake a PhD in Human Ecology. Charles was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his service as chair and

“I haven’t looked back.” Graham’s chestnuts flourished, and he was so inspired he trialled test strips of vermicast spread over the rest of his property. “The noticeable good quality and extra growth was encouraging,” Graham said. “I continued to spread 250kg/ha of castings over the property annually, and the results got better each year.” The limitation of vermicast was cost of transport.

Director of a number of research organisations and statutory wool boards. He will officially launch his latest book, Call of the Reed Warbler, during the NutriSoil open day. Contact the team at NutriSoil to reserve your place at this prestigious event – and learn what you can do at home.

In the mid-90s Graham decided to invest the farm’s fertiliser deposit on setting up his own vermiculture system. “When I was designing our own recipe, I wanted it to be exactly the kind of stuff I would spread at home,” he said. “So we added a manure/ straw base, and seaweed and fish emulsion which gave a good source of trace elements and minerals.

“Healthy soils don’t need the addition of many chemical inputs that modern agriculture suggests.” The next step was to set up the windrows to take the liquid extract from the worms and so NutriSoil LS (liquid spray) biological concentrate was born. “It is a fertiliser in its own right and has been the only form of fertiliser used on our property for many years now,” Graham said.

“Rather than 250kg/ha application with vermicast, only 5L/ha of NutriSoil concentrate is required.” Graham has now semiretired from the business, handing the reins to the next generation: daughter Rachelle Armstrong with her husband Justin Armstrong, son Darren Maddock and his wife Nakala Maddock, and Mattia Ringe are all as enthusiastic about the natural benefits of NutriSoil as Graham is. But, every bit as determined, the team continue to be at the forefront of natural farming systems – and in 2016 won the Australian Organics Best Certified Product of the Year (non food). In 2017 they were also awarded a silver medal for Australian Ethical Enterprises by Moral Fairground.

INDUSTRY LEADER: Bayley Goode runs Goode Organics, a company that is proud to offer an alternative to traditional fertilisers.

Getting all the good information with Goode Organics GOODE Organics is proud to provide this short editorial as part of Southern Farmer’s feature on Seeds, Fertiliser and Autumn Pasture. Hopefully many of you reading this attended the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo where Goode Organics had a display and stock. Most farmers are aware they need more calcium in their soils, however, the cost of liming can be prohibitive and the calcium from lime is not always immediately available. Liquid calcium - not powdered liquid lime - is a fast, instantly available form of calcium that farmers can spray onto the soil and also use as a

foliar spray. Calcium is the biggest number in any soil test. That’s a good indication of how important it is for soil structure, crop and pasture production. Goode Organics is the Victorian distributor for Healthy Earths N:Cal Liquid Calcium. N:Cal does not block up jets, is much more available than lime, cheaper and easier to apply with a much lower freight cost. Importantly, it works on the crop it’s applied to and returns the investment that season. A 1000 litre shuttle of N:Cal is equal to 45 tonnes of lime. Research has shown that

applying soluble calcium with urea can improve crop production. Calcium increases ammonium, potassium and phosphorus absorption, stimulates photosynthesis, and increases the size of sellable plant parts. It also makes the use of nitrogen more efficient, which improves the economics of production and reduces nitrogen contamination of the environment. For more information, or to chat about what would best suit your farming needs, give me a call at Goode Organics on 0420 946 156 or send an email to bayley@goodeorganics.com.au.

New research focuses on feed additives to lift lamb survival A RANGE of dietary additives showing potential to improve the viability of newborn animals when supplied in-utero are undergoing the first comprehensive trials in sheep in Australia. The Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) project aims to identify compounds with the biggest potential to boost a lamb’s ability to survive and thrive in late pregnancy and the days immediately after birth. If successful, these will contribute to higher whole-flock productivity and profits on-farm. The ‘New approaches to increase the weaning rate of the national sheep flock’ initiative

Is feed the difference in an Australian dairy?

AGRICULTURE Victoria researchers at Ellinbank have this month welcomed a visiting dairy extension specialist from Bhutan, Nima Norbu. Nima was the lucky recipient of a prestigious fellowship from the Crawford Foundation. He will spend two months working alongside Ellinbank scientists to further his understanding of dairy research and extension processes and the Australian dairy industry, before spending a month at La Trobe University. It is a big change of scenery for Nima, seeing that farmers in his native Bhutan have an average of 3 or 4 cows on holdings of only 1 or 2 acres - and that includes steers and bulls. Nima hopes that the knowledge and skills that he picks up during his time in Gippsland will be beneficial for both his own career, and the farmers he works with back home in Bhutan. One of the experiments Nima will work on is an experiment designed to investigate feed additives with the potential to help relieve heat stress in cows during hot weather.

BY DR MARTIN AULDIST Senior Research Scientist, Agriculture Victoria, Ellinbank

This experiment started in February using 24 cows, and is monitoring the physiological responses and milk production of cows during a heat challenge when fed a feed additive and a fat supplement, both alone and in combination. If supplements can be identified that reduce the effects of heat stress, they could be incorporated into specialised “summer diets” that are then fed during hot weather, to alleviate the decline in milk production which commonly occurs when cows get too hot. At the time of writing, the cows were approximately half way through their treatments, so I should have some initial results to share soon. Further experiments will look at different forages and grain supplements that may have lower heats of fermentation and therefore reduce the heat load on cows during extreme heat events. Nima will also work on an

experiment commencing in April that has the aim of measuring the depletion in pasture availability and quality that occurs in the time between the first and last cows reaching the paddock after milking. Case studies have shown that this can be over 2.5 hours in large herds, by which time 40 per cent of the pasture could be gone. The experiment will progressively release cows back into the paddock at a stocking rate that mimics that found on commercial farms. Detailed measurements will be made of the changes in pasture mass and nutritive characteristics during grazing. On-cow sensors and alkane techniques will also be used to understand the effects on the variation in dry matter intake, and the extent to which compensatory grazing may occur. In turn, this information will be used to design management strategies for optimising feed intake and milk production across the herd. I’ll have more information from both these experiments next month.

but would also apply to ewes carrying a single foetus. “Survival rates for twin and singleton lambs across Australia’s sheep flock average about 70 per cent and 90 per cent respectively and this has not changed in many years,” Mr Apps said. “For the national Merino flock, the average is lower at about 50 per cent and 75 per cent respectively. “Improving these rates is integral to increasing on-farm productivity and the competitiveness of sheep production and meeting an expected global rise in demand for red meat in coming years.”

is one of 12 on-farm research, development and adoption (RD&A) projects to receive MLA investment in 2017-18. Previous research has recognised poor lamb survival pre-weaning is a major source of reproductive inefficiency in the national sheep flock and the new investment will help producers fine-tune their nutrition and management tactics. MLA program manager - Sheep R&D and Objective Measurement, Richard Apps, said it was particularly targeted at finding dietary supplement options for twin-bearing ewes in the second half of gestation,

Technology gives canola growers a leg-up against blackleg NEW technology is set to enhance decision making by Australian canola growers in their strategic efforts to reduce yield and profit losses caused by blackleg, a potentially devastating disease. A blackleg management app has just been released, providing growers with a tool that can forecast the likelihood and severity of the disease, associated yield loss and economic returns on a paddock-bypaddock basis ahead of sowing. BlacklegCM is a Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) investment and is the result of 30 years of blackleg research. It is envisaged the app will become the mainstay for blackleg knowledge in Australia. Oilseeds disease expert, Dr Steve Marcroft, who contributed significantly to development of the app, says the tool will provide growers and advisers with “an interactive interface” to explore and compare the economic outcomes of different management strategies for blackleg, which can cause up to 90 per cent yield loss where a cultivar’s blackleg resistance has been overcome. Dr Marcroft, of Marcroft Grains Pathology in Horsham, says the app is an extension of the GRDC’s Blackleg Management Guide which is updated twice a year to reflect any changes in the resistance status of individual cultivars. “Although the Management Guide provides useful information, it has some limitations in its current form. “It is difficult to consider complex interactions such as the use of cultivars with different blackleg ratings in high or low rainfall environments and the effect of fungicide use,” Dr Marcroft said. “There has been a need to de-

velop a management tool that can provide disease forecasting based on the management principles proposed by the manager of an individual paddock, and this has led to the development of BlacklegCM. “BlacklegCM assists growers to manage blackleg by integrating the information provided in the Blackleg Management Guide and producing a predicted economic outcome. “It can be modified to account for some of the major factors that relate to risk of yield loss due to blackleg in a particular paddock. “It allows the user to compare the likely relative profitability of different disease management strategies, including paddock selection, cultivar choice, seed dressing, banded fungicide and sprayed fungicide.” BlacklegCM takes account of costs, yield benefits and grain prices to give the best case, worst case and most likely estimates of economic return.

It also accounts for the major factors that influence blackleg severity. “The user has the option to change each parameter to tailor the output to their cropping circumstance,” Dr Marcroft said. “Consequently, the user can explore their options for disease control and understand the relative importance of each factor.” “Once all the parameters have been entered by the user, the real power of the app becomes apparent as it determines blackleg severity, yield loss and economic return from the parameters entered.” The app has been extensively tested by advisers and the interfaces were determined based on advisers’ recommendations. Dr Marcroft says the app, now available via the App Store and Play Store, will be updated continuously to ensure it covers all current canola cultivars and their current blackleg ratings.

“All new knowledge will also be incorporated - knowledge on upper canopy infection and different fungicide timings will be incorporated in the near future,” he said. The app can also be used during the growing season. “For instance, in 2016 many growers planned for a two tonne/ hectare crop but soon realised that yield potentials were much higher,” Dr Marcroft said. “Members of the National Canola Pathology team then warned of a very high blackleg lesion severity. “In this scenario in July, growers could have re-run the app with a three t/ha yield target, rather than a two t/ha yield target, and compared plus or minus foliar fungicide.” Comprehensive information on management of canola diseases can be viewed and downloaded via the GRDC’s Diseases of Canola and Their Management: The Back Pocket Guide.

April 2018

Pulse disease guide released THE latest pulse disease management information has been released by Agriculture Victoria. Speaking at the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s Research Updates at Bendigo last month, Agriculture Victoria senior research scientist, Jason Brand, said the guide included important information for growers - such as updated disease ratings for commonly grown pulse varieties. “Disease will require proactive management in 2018 following two good seasons,” Dr Brand said. “It is important for growers to note that some chickpea and faba bean cultivars have increased their susceptibility rating to ascochyta blight due to changes in the pathogens. “This will impact disease management plans for some growers this season.” Along with updated disease ratings, the Pulse Disease guide - which is updated by Agriculture Victoria each year - provides growers with advice on how to avoid losses from disease - and what they need to consider when planning their rotations for the season ahead. Dr Brand said adoption of integrated disease management strategies will reduce the risk of disease in 2018. “These strategies incorporate sowing healthy seed, variety selection (ie choosing more resistant varieties where possible), using seed dressings, appropriate paddock selection and active crop monitoring for diseases and insect vectors to inform timely foliar fungicide and/or insecticide application.” The Agriculture Victoria Pulse Disease Guide is supported by the Victorian Government and GRDC. Gippsland contractor says Duncan gets the job done Contributed by Australian AgContractor magazine THE challenges of a changing climate mean the right machines are needed to get in and get the job done. Father and son team Paul and Thomas Haymes purchased a 5.3m Duncan AS 5300 air seeder a year ago to meet the challenges of servicing varied farming clients amid unpredictable weather conditions. The Haymes farm 250 dairy cows and 450 beef cows in Yarram, but the majority of their work is contracting through their business Haymes Contracting. “We were getting too far behind because we were trying to

do our jobs in a shorter period of time,” Thomas said. “The Duncan has proven to be the ideal tool; it ticks all the boxes, and it is narrower and a lot shorter than other brands. “That makes it easier to transport so we can get in for the smaller jobs as well as the bigger jobs.” Each year, the Haymes harvest well over 20,000 bales of hay and silage and do about 1200 hectares of drilling and 600 hectares of cultivation - that amount has been growing steadily. They sow grass as well as rape, turnips, grain and cereal crops and provide the full service from drilling to harvest, including applying fertiliser spreading and spraying. The contracting business

operates from September through until June. However, the varied climates in different regions in the southeast corner of Victoria means they operate in three distinct seasonal zones – the coastal areas to the south and east, the sheep and beef operations to the north, and a later season in the west. “Even though they are only an hour or two up the road, their seasons are quite different, so we often have short windows to get in and complete the jobs,” Thomas said. The unpredictable weather over the last few years has posed added challenges, and it has shortened the available window to get work done. This summer, for example, there was about 200ml of rain

between mid-December and mid-January, a traditionally dry period - then it was back to normal summer conditions with 40 degree temperatures. That is where the Duncan air seeder comes in because it is efficient to run and allows the team to get in and get the job done quickly. Thomas said it only takes a couple of minutes to calibrate, so it is easy for the staff to operate. Thomas said one of the Duncan AS 5300’s best features is the hydraulic down force on the folding wings, which can be adjusted to suit all conditions. “None of the other machines we looked at had that feature,” Thomas said. “It means we can get the jobs done in a shorter period of

time and we can get more work done each day, so we don’t get behind. “We chose the Duncan over other brands because we think it’s a stronger build and an allround better machine.” He said the AS 5300 works well behind his 150hp tractor. It has plenty of power to handle the drill’s 25mm coil tine very well. Important features on the Duncan AS 5300 drill include large hoppers for seed and fertiliser, a transport width of 3.1m, an Accord style seed meter which allows the operator to change sowing rates from the cab, electric drive and radar, a long drawbar with a swivel toweye, and front and rear access platforms.

GETTING THE JOB DONE: Thomas Haymes says with his Duncan AS 5300 air seeder he can get work done for his diverse client base in tight timeframes – the Duncan AS 5300 can be quickly adjusted to suit different conditions thanks to the hydraulic down force on the folding wings.
