B
iblion’s fifth issue is a turning point on the magazine’s editorial concept. Oftentimes called a “book catalog” (which is fine, if that means Portuguese people read more) and faced with a decline of new national releases, we begin to focus more and more on the development of our own content as to provide a pleasant and insightful reading. We have begun a series of special articles, starting with a work over twenty-pages long on the seven books of The Chronicles of Narnia, which will also be made available in a booklet format, shedding some light on the works that immortalized C. S. Lewis among the younger public. Coming soon is the opening day of the world’s most advanced museum – the Museum of the Bible, in Washington, D.C., and we are glad to provide you with a preview of what may well be an unforgettable (and free!) visit. We are very honored to share with our readers an exclusive interview with Brian Russell, Executive Director of YouVersion – The Bible App, showing us the most recent updates on this Godly platform used by 300 million people, and how we can make the most of it in private, at the church and especially with the youth through The Bible App for Kids. And it doesn’t end there. On top of the content development, the lack of resources and the multi-platform distribution, and spurred by an unwavering commitment, we decided to double our efforts by releasing a full version of Biblion in English. With all this, I believe we can say “YES!”.

reat scholar of God’s Word and author of The Message, Eugene Peterson seeks the profound wisdom inherent to several aspects of the language employed by Jesus, and makes it known to us in this excellent book, “Tell It Slant: A Conversation on the Language of Jesus in His Stories and Prayers”. With so much teaching He transmitted, Jesus did not leave any writings of his – he only spoke. The author begins with that in mind, bringing us to another dimension of communication, be it spoken or written. Later on, Peterson describes the different types of communication employed by God for our understanding, with preaching being the language that personally links us with the action of God in the present. Teaching
through metaphors was also extensively used by Jesus to make us internally aware of His living, multidimensional truth. It is also vital that we practice the conversational exchange due to its informality – at home, at the table, among family and/or friends. Peterson dedicates another significant part of his book to the journey’s narrative, as it appears in the Gospel of Luke, providing insightful examples such as the Samaritan

BCs of the Christian Life – The Ultimate Anthology of the Prince of Paradox, published in the US by Ave Maria Press, is an anthology on an unmatched author, whose piercing, yet at the same time enthralling style, captivates readers looking for works that challenge their rational comfort. Right in his introduction, Peter Kreeft points out three people who were absolutely unique and distinctive by their personalities and intellect: Jesus Christ, Socrates, and G. K. Chesterton. It’s an enlightening statement, when it comes to Chesterton, yet what may to the average reader as a paradoxical presumption is nothing but the cold, hard truth, and what may seem unquestionable is indeed a paradox. That is the true paradox.

G.K. Chesterton This work features twenty-six handpicked texts from Chesterton, one for each letter of the alphabet, which makes it a remarkable book to fans of this author just as it is to readers unfamiliar with his style. The compilation, not yet available in Portuguese, deserves a translation, as it would allow people unacquainted with Chesterton’s work to experience it in several contexts and in an accessible way. His interpretations of current and historical themes are straightforward and promote reflection: from Jesus’ birth and the contrasts between those who follow Him and those who do not believe His deeds, to the influences that humanize Christianity, when paradoxical and

The principle of life in all these variations of Protestantism, in so far as it is not a principle of death, consists of what remained in them of Catholic Christendom; (...) I know that this will sound like a statement to be challenged; but it is true. Protestants are Catholics gone wrong. That is what is really meant by saying they are Christians. Thus a Calvinist is a Catholic obsessed with the Catholic idea of the sovereignity of God. (…) But every step he takes back towards humanity is a step back towards Catholicism. any attempt to impose Catholicism as the Universal Religion to be doomed to failure. In several chapters of the book, Chesterton dedicates special attention to St. Francis of Assisi and defends a point of view that highlights his similarities with Jesus Christ, arguing that, “if St. Francis was like Christ, Christ was to that extent like St. Francis. (...) What I mean is this; that if men find certain riddles and hard sayings in the story of Galilee, and if they find the answers to those riddles in the story of Assisi, it really does show that a secret has been handed down in one religious tradition and no other. It shows that the casket that was locked in Palestine can be unlocked in Umbria; for the Church is the keeper of the keys.” Being even more enlightening when it comes to Jesus Christ, Chesterton affirms that, “It is truism to say that Christ lived before Christendom (...) the medium in which He moved was not the medium of Christendom but of the old pagan empire.” Chesterton uses his signature oxymora to present us the austere St. Francis in a unique perspective, sometimes taking the stance of the skeptical and of the atheist to question practices that the (Catholic) Church reveres as exemplar, but that author exposes with critical thinking, leaving the author to form his own opinion on those issues. A coincidence or not, a large part of the texts selected for this book show us Ches-
terton’s rough, perhaps even defiant posture towards religion, especially Christianity. The absolute dogma of the Roman Catholic Church and its indifference towards what Protestants accept or reject in the Catholics, stating, “nothing amuses Catholics more than the suggestion, in so much of the old Protestant propaganda, that they are to be freed from the superstition called Mariolatry.” The chapter dedicated to religious comparison is a fascinating one, where Chesterton, after suggesting Confucianism is a civilization, advocates there should be an alternative classification for different religions. Chesterton maintains that these should be divided psychologically in order to better identify the spiritual experiences over the inconsequential comparisons. He ends, much in the role of a chaperone, in a quite personal visit to Jerusalem, using the steep paths and narrow streets to once again make known his characteristic perspective on the Holy Land. He narrates the Fullfrom article guided visit the only Zion available Gate and to a key subscribers center of history, where nations and religion coexist, with all its identity, architecture and prophecies. 1: Personal Use The YouVersion Bible App has achieved astounding numbers: 280 Million downloads, more than 1.500 versions, translated into almost 1.100 languages. At a time when people worldwide have adopted the smartphone as their handy device, what can new users expect to find and how can they better explore the content found in this application?

The Bible App allows people to connect with friends and interact with Scripture by experiencing encouragment, conversation, and growth—all around God’s Word. We continue to improve the search function, both within and outside the app. For example, the YouVersion team has recently developed a Messages plugin and iOS Keyboard that allows users to search for Scripture by emotion within the Messages app and text it to friends.

3: FOR KIDS A hurdle for Portuguese people to accept Christian literature, either in physical or digital formats, is to read them in Brazilian-Portuguese, specially during one’s formative stages of life. You are doing a great effort to provide as much native-Portuguese content as possible to the kids’ app. What amazing features and content is already available for our children?
The Bible App for Kids was made available in Brazilian-Portuguese in Dec. 2014. At the time, it was the fifth language added to the children’s app in addition to English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. When a child opens the app they now have a between 28 different languages. All audio will play in that language, and any text throughout the app will appear in that language as well. We will begin work on Portuguese (European) soon and plan to release that app version in the first half of 2018.
The children’s content includes 41 of the “big” Bible stories to help kids understand the overall story that the Bible is telling. Kid-friendly navigation helps them find and select whichever story they want, then reads it aloud to them them in a friendly narrative style. Throughout each story, fun, interactive animations keep children engaged, and some stories even include games designed to help them learn, understand, and retain important Bible story concepts.

FAITH-BUILDING JOURNEY FOR GUYS
TRIBE: A WARRIOR’S HEART MICHAEL ROSS
Tribe: A Warrior’s Heart seeks to strengthen the hearts of a generation of young Christians who long for an intimate relationship with their Creator. Based on several Biblical passages, this devotional is made to prepare the reader for a life in accordance to God’s will. Throughout 28 days, the reader is challenged to self-evaluate his daily conduct and to walk in faith and righteousness, so that he may become a role mode of absolute reliance in Christ. Each of the 28 days establishes a goal (e.g. “Commit your dreams and desires to God”) directly related to a Biblical passage and to a testimony in which the goal was successfully attained. Following said testimony, the author offers a short lesson on how to reach the daily goal and finishes with a brief prayer, destined to reinforce the commitment between the reader and God. Besides the devotional, Michael Ross also provides us with a yearlong Bible reading plan, switching through passages of the Old and New Testament on a weekly basis. The book contains a description of how the Bible is organized, as well as several pages where the reader may take notes and write his thoughts after each day’s lesson. “A World Like No Other”
Lantern Waste One of the biggest icons of Narnia, the Lantern Waste is called so due to the Victorian lamppost whose light never fades, and which is found in a lonely clearing within the region. However, the lamp that names the land is almost as old as Narnia itself; it is introduced in the world during its creation, as The Magician’s Nephew indicates. The Waste is the place where the Narnian adventures begin and end, being the starting point for the Pevensies’ adventures, as well as the location of the Last Battle, which marks the end of Narnia.
The Wood Between the Worlds Filled with great puddles of water surrounded by green trees and grass, the Wood Between the Worlds is the cross-section between our universe and all others, including that of Narnia. Andrew Ketterly sends Polly Plummer to the Wood through his magical rings, forcing his nephew Digory Kirke to collaborate in his sinister plans. It is through one of its portals that the first humans (and Jadis) arrive to Narnia.
Stone Table The great Stone Table is one of the clearest symbols of C. S. Lewis’ faith in The Chronicles of Narnia. The Table is the place where the White Witch sacrifices Aslan, who gave himself for Edmund. The Table breaks in two when Aslan comes back from the dead to join the Narnians and confront the Witch.

Jadis’ Castle The White Witch did not rule Narnia from Cair Paravel, the castle of Narnia’s legitimate kings and queens, but from a somber stronghold with an iron gate and very tall towers and spires. The White Witch kept many of her opponents frozen as statues of stone, in the castle’s courtyard.
Cair Paravel The glorious seaside castle of Cair Paravel is the capital of the small kingdom of Narnia. In it lived every legitimate king that descended from Adam and Eve, with the exception of Full article (22pgs.) only the Telmarine kings, who were not the legitimate rulers, and available to subscribers whose first king left Cair Paravel to crumble and rot after his conquest of Narnia. Tashbaan
EDITION
The majestic capital SUBSCRIBE of Calormen, Tashbaan is most likely to be the largest city in the world of Narnia. Located on an island at the mouth of the great river separating Calormen from the Great Desert, the city is known for its magnificent gardens and palaces, including the palace of the great Tisroc (may he live forever!) himself. One can also find the Great Temple of Tash at the highest point of Tashbaan.
Hermitage The home of the Hermit of the Southern March can be found in Archenland, to the north of the Great Desert. This is a cozy, secluded place, with a thatched cottage and a tall hedge around it. In its courtyard is a pool of stale water that the Hermit uses to see what transpires throughout the world.

Anvard The castle of Anvard is the capital of the small yet proud kingdom of Archenland, located south of the kingdom of Narnia. Made up of reddish-brown stone, the castle is easily recognized by its numerous towers and lack of a moat. The castle harbors Archenland’s royal family, including King Lune and his children.

The region of Beruna is known for lending its name to two battles that made history, as both were fought on its fords. During the Telmarine period, a settlement was established on the fords’ margin; this settlement is also known as Beruna and is well known for its red roofs.
Lone Islands Caspian X arrives to the so-called Lone Islands on his quest for the Telmarine noblemen who were loyal to him. This region seems to bear its name not because it stands isolated from the rest of the world, but because it stands practically independent from its true allegiance, the Kingdom of Narnia (that is, until Caspian arrives). The region comprises three islands: Avra, Doorn, and Felimath, with the island of Doorn being the most important one.

Silver Sea One of the most serene and unusual places in the world of Narnia, the Silver Sea is an extension of the Last Sea at the End of the World. EXTRA “Charn: The Desolate World” Much of The Chronicles of Narnia take place in two worlds: our world, which is planet Earth (duh…) and the world of Aslan, which is Narnia (with his Country being something of a “New Jerusalem” to Narnians). There is a third world, however; a desolate world from an obsolete universe – Charn, the birthplace of the White Witch. “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” The Characters that Made History
Aslan The Great Lion, Lord of Narnia by his right. C. S. Lewis affirms Aslan represents Jesus Christ as he would look and be like in a fantasy world. Aslan is typically presented in the form of a talking lion, at the same time magnificent and terrifying, though he also appears as a lamb at the end of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Digory, also known as Prof. Kirke and “The Magician’s Nephew, is one of the first human beings to step on the world of Narnia. SUBSCRIBE A stubborn yet good-hearted boy, Digory’s actions have a huge impact in The Chronicles, although such impact is not always positive. Even so, Digory continues to be a relevant character even after his adventure in Narnia, since it’s through his wardrobe that Lucy, Susan, Peter and Edmund first enter this fantastic world.
Polly Plummer Digory’s best friend, Polly is a caring girl and the first person to use the rings of Digory’s uncle to travel through worlds – though she does so involuntarily. Polly is oftentimes the voice of reason in her adventure with Digory, especially when it comes to Jadis, as she does not understand what Digory and Uncle Andrew see in her (besides her evil, which is more than evident).

Jadis, the White Witch A woman whose beauty is only surpassed by her own cruelty and coldness, Jadis is the most popular antagonist in The Chronicles of Narnia. The White Witch used to be an extremely powerful being in her homeworld, which she destroyed so it wouldn’t fall in her rival’s hands. On her arrival to Narnia, Jadis lost her powers, but eventually regained enough abilities to usurp the throne and title herself as Queen. Arávis The young Aravis Tarkheena joins Shasta in his journey to Narnia, as she also wants to leave Calormen, albeit for different reasons. The two fight a lot at first because of their origins: Aravis is the daughter of Calormene nobility while Shasta is the son of a simple fisherman. However, both become loyal travel partners with a genuine care for each other.

Bree & Hwin Bree is the signature horse of The Horse and His Boy, a talking destrier who wishes to return to Narnia but cannot let go of his old habits. Miraz The Machiavellian usurper Miraz is the Regent of Narnia during the Pevensie’s second adventure in Aslan’s world. Over his tyrannical reign, Miraz and his Telmarines persecuted the Narnians until their supposed extinction, erasing nearly all evidence of their existence. However, the Narnians survive and fight back, spearheaded by Prince Caspian. Eustace Scrubb Not all human beings who arrive to Narnia seem worthy of such honor; Eustace Scrubb, however, lives up to his last name. Eustace is cousin to the Pevensies, but received a different kind of education – very uncommon and “modern” at that time – that turned the poor kid into an annoying and bothersome child. His adventure with Edmund and Lucy turn Eustace into a courageous and wise boy, though the process is a painful one. His new attitude is proved in his adventures with Jill Pole – and reproached by his parents, who blame the Pevensies influence.

he Chronicles of Narnia reflect moral conflict akin to the spiINTERACTIVE ritual conflict that Christians EDITION experience on Earth. SUBSCRIBE
Aslan, creator of Narnia, is called several times to protect his creation from the many dark forces that threaten it. Through his marvelous deeds, the Lion implies that Good can and must triumph over Evil, but also that such victory comes at a price. Humans that come to Aslan’s world are almost always confronted with the responsibility of defeating the evil forces (Jadis, the Telmarines, the Green Witch, etc.) that seek to corrupt the happy and peaceful Kingdom of Narnia. Such responsibility forces characters to make choices and sacrifices, which in turn change the characters themselves. This is what makes Narnia such a dynamic world, one where the good guys do not always make the right choice and the bad guys do not always regret their wrongdoings.

It’s these “little big actions” that, as on Earth, give shape and meaning to the world and to the story of Narnia.

Digory Kirke remains unfazed by Lucy’s story and takes her side: since Lucy was not a liar nor a crazy little girl, Digory concludes she could only be telling the truth.
This passage is deeply connected to what is known as “Lewis’ Trilemma”: the idea that Jesus was whom He affirmed to be through his example and his message - the Son of God. There was only three ways to face the Jesus of the Gospels, according to Lewis: either He lied, or He was no more than a crazed man, or He really was who He affirmed to be. Lewis formulated this concept in response to those who believed Jesus was simply a good teacher with valuable insights, but that in no way whatsoever could be the Messiah and the Son of God.

The Case for Christ LEE STROBEL It was as an award-winning Chicago Tribune reporter and an atheist that Lee Strobel first began investigating the greatest news of all: Jesus Christ. An experienced journalist with a Masters in Law from Yale University, Strobel asked the difficult questions you would like to see answered – questions that may build or raze the Christian faith. He rejects simplistic, made-up answers; instead, he presents the testimony from dozens of the world’s most celebrated specialists on the subject of Christ. Written in the style of a journalistic investigation, The Case for Christ is a thought-provoking, well-founded reading. S O U R C E : E D I TO R A V I DA ( B R A Z I L )
