In addition to producing products in concrete, CDI manufactures shapes in glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) for use when weight is a consideration or when a smooth, even finish is desired. CDI, located in Tucson, Arizona, has specialized in the design and manufacture of architectural ornamentation since 1958. The company completed a new 35,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in 1990 and now produces over 15 million pounds of individually handcast products yearly. CDI’s reputation for diversity in design, durability of products, reliable service, and competitive pricing has made this company the choice of professionals in the design and building industries worldwide. We welcome anyone who is interested in products that set the standard to visit our facility for a firsthand look at what we can do for you. Our headquarters building and showroom display many of our products. If such a visit is impractical, a tour through our catalog will give you an overview and may suggest new design possibilities for your projects. CDI: Consider the Options Concrete Designs Inc. creates products for ornamental and decorative purposes; they are not intended for use as structural components. There the restrictions end. CDI makes all of its products in-house, including designs, patterns, molds, and the castings themselves. With thousands of existing patterns and more designs added continually, CDI’s product line offers possibilities that are practically unlimited. And the variety extends beyond shapes to include choices in media, texture and color. CDI produces its ornamental architectural products in concrete and glass fiber reinforced concrete. Our GFRC is only 3/8”–1/2” thick, resulting in a product that is lighter than concrete by as much as 75 percent. Ideal for applications where weight is a factor, GFRC offers the same sharp detail and durability as concrete, with a smooth, void-free texture. Gray color and Traditional texture are standard for CDI products. CDI utilizes the latest in concrete technology to achieve the visual and structural requirements that your project requires. The “Modern” texture is achieved using Self Consolidating Concrete (SCC) which allows for a smooth low void surface. The “Traditional” texture is characterized by randomly spaced voids typical when casting with conventional concrete mixes. Our “Etched” and “Cast Stone” finishes are achieved with a secondary acid etching process to lightly expose the aggregates and give it a natural limestone look. Sandblasting and exposed aggregate textures are also available. GFRC is typically cast in the “Modern” texture but depending on the application the other finishes may be available. Custom textures are also available. Custom Designs To allow maximum flexibility for any project, CDI welcomes custom designs, offering the experience and expertise to advise on and produce exceptional products from our clients’ creativity. Lead times for custom work vary according to the scope and complexity of the project. To expedite projects that specify custom shapes, we recommend that clients involve CDI as early as possible in the design process and remain flexible regarding the final design and the time schedule necessary to complete it. Because of the expertise required to produce custom designs, CDI retains ownership of all patterns and molds. 2
CDI: Setting the Standard for the Ornamental Precast Concrete Industry Concrete Designs Inc. is the largest manufacturer of ornamental precast concrete in the United States. Known for its high-quality products and commitment to customer service, CDI is also characterized by versatility. The company originally drew on Spanish Colonial architecture for design inspiration, but rapidly expanded its vision and its product line to include all types of architecture. Along with a product selection of over 2,500 different shapes to complement a wide array of architectural styles, CDI offers its clients a virtually unlimited capacity to create custom designs in many colors and a variety of textures. To this end, the company employs an experienced team of product consultants, concrete specialists, craftsmen, and technical support personnel who are dedicated to meeting the challenges inherent in a handmade approach, from concept to finished product.

ALUSTERS
Balustrade hand rails and base stretchers are manufactured in three-foot lengths. Options include: Drainage weepholes in the M82 base. Dowel pin holes, spaced at 7”, 9” or 12”. Seven inch spacing will usually satisfy the 4” UBC requirement, although certain baluster styles cannot be installed with the 7” spacing. One-inch PVC pipe rather than the standard reinforcing steel rod (#3). Weld plates for field welding the hand rails and bases. The 28-day compressive strength of the balusters exceeds 5000 PSI. Spindle shapes with abruptly changing diameters are prone to cracking and, despite the high strength of our concrete, they cannot be guaranteed against hairline cracks. Baluster textures tend to be coarser than our average textures.

USTOM PROJECTS
Custom projects are always welcome at CDI. Because we make our own patterns and molds, shapes from our standard product line can always be modified. Or we will work with architects and design professionals to develop entirely new designs. In addition, CDI collaborates with independent design and artistic professionals to achieve that individual look required in some projects.
