Club Archivist Graham Dennis discovers some amazing archive images of the Club dating back to 1967

The Club archivist, Graham Dennis, recently purchased this previously unseen set of images featuring Guards Polo Club. The caption was vague, “Polo Windsor Great Park 1967”. However, after some detective work we can reveal that the match was for the Argentine Cup and was played on Sunday 16 July 1967.

The teams playing were HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s Windsor Park versus Harold Bamberg’s Eaglesfield team, who received 1½ goals on handicap. Windsor Park narrowly won the match 6-5½. Lord Patrick scored a hat-trick, his older brother, The Marquis of Waterford, fired through a goal and JJ Alberdi put a couple of shots through the flags for Windsor Park. Meanwhile a pair of goals from both Eduardo Moore and Luis Maguire ensured Eaglesfield remained in contention throughout the match. The Club’s beautiful, copperplate record books confirm the teams as: Windsor Park: Lord Patrick Beresford (4); The Marquis of Waterford (4); Mr J J Alberdi (6); HRH The Duke of Edinburgh (5) Eaglesfield: Mr Harold Bamberg (1); Mr Paul Withers (6); Mr Eduardo Moore (6); Mr Luis Maguire (4). ✸
