SATURDAY 26TH JUNE 2021 HILDON ARCHIE DAVID CUP

TEAMS EMSWORTH, TCHOGAN/LIBERTINE, QUIXOTE, CANI, HOME FARM, SHAKIB POLO

Emanuel and Yolanda Arber’s Emsworth Polo Team dominated the fi nal of the Hildon Archie David Cup. With an average age of 19, this young team overwhelmed their opposition, Tchogan/ Libertine, to win the UK’s leading eight-goal tournament 9-3.

Some great team play saw Emsworth create a 5-0 lead at half-time. Gonzalo Ferrari, who spends his winters working for the La Dolfi na team in Argentina and was playing three of Adolfo Cambiaso’s ponies in this game, teamed up brilliantly with Zac Beim to deliver some great plays on the Princes’ Ground. The Arber siblings, whose parents play with the family’s Four Quarters teams, were equally impressive and Emsworth’s cohesive style of play proved hard to beat.

Hugo Taylor, who had been playing in the high-goal Cartier Queen’s Cup for the UAE Polo Team II just a few days earlier, and Tommy Severn combined well together for Tchogan/ Libertine but luck seemed against them. Their team-mate Alexander Nix was particularly keen to win this tournament as his partner, Olympia Paus, had won the subsidiary earlier in the afternoon, but despite some good chances it was not to be.

Emanuel Arber was later rewarded with the Hildon Most Valuable Player prize. Team-mate Gonzalo received the Best Playing Pony prize for Vero. This 12-year-old chestnut mare was owned and bred by Matias Ballesteros and he joined Gonzalo and the Emsworth grooms for the presentation by Platina Tong.

The sub fi nal for the Caterham Cup was a much closer aff air, played earlier in the day. Quixote defeated last year’s winners, Louise Jebson’s CANI, 10-7. The third game of this tournament, for the Claude Pert Trophy, is just for those Club teams that have not made it through after the league stages. This was another close contest between Home Farm (rec ½ goal) and Shakib Polo. Oliver Heard’s Home Farm came out best, with Louis joining his brother to deliver this win. ✸
