LA MARTINA QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER’S CENTENARY TROPHY EMLOR DEFY WEATHER TO KEEP TROPHY

SUNDAY 16TH MAY 2021 LA MARTINA QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER’S CENTENARY TROPHY

TEAMS EMLOR, BLACK BEARS, OAKLEY COURT, EMLOR BLACK

Spencer McCarthy’s Emlor team first highlighted their dominance in the 15-goal tournaments at Smith’s Lawn in 2021 by retaining the La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary Trophy. Spencer’s team then went on to win the Royal Windsor Cup, the UK’s leading 15-goal tournament just a month later.

In this La Martina fi nal Emlor had to work hard for the win, battling both a competitive Black Bears squad, patroned by Guy Schwarzenbach, and torrential rain. It was closely fought, Emlor coming out best 5-4. The win also ensured Spencer’s team could claim the double as Emlor had won the trophy in 2019 and the tournament was not played for in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Emlor had dug deep to win this match, with Spencer on great form throughout the four chukkas. His sterling efforts were rewarded with the Most Valuable Player prize, while Paco O’Dwyer of Black Bears headed home with the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize.

Mark Wadhwa’s Oakley Court claimed the sub fi nal, stopping an Emlor double when beating James McCarthy’s Emlor Black in an earlier match. These teams had better weather so only had to battle each other! ✸
