BACKGROUND Up to the middle nineteen fifties, I had never even heard of Alfa Romeo. Then one of our assistant scout masters, who used to ride a Vespa scooter, bought himself a car called an Alfa Romeo Giulietta. He was forever going on about how fabulous it was, its magnificent sporting pedigree and what fun it was to drive. I never rode in the car, but I was less than impressed by its rather narrow and high build, with unfashionably boxy styling, set off with a shield shaped vertical grille, when all the fashionable cars of the time were sporting wide horizontal grilles.

Then in the late sixties, my brother-in-law decided to upgrade from his rear engined Renault 4CV and bought a secondhand Alfa Giulietta. Once again I was subjected to the tirade about its magnificent sporting performance etc. etc.

ROAD TEST

My first acquaintance with an Alfa Romeo came in the middle nineteen seventies, when I got an Alfasud for a road test. I was totally enthralled! I loved its shape, its superlative performance, excellent roadholding and absolute driving pleasure. Suddenly I could see what that assistant scout master and my brother-in-law had been raving about. Then a little later, I had the pleasure of road

testing a 1.6 litre Alfetta four door saloon. Compared to cars like the Triumph Dolomite Sprint, it too had a rather high build, but its performance was magnificent, ride and roadholding outstanding and its driving pleasure was heavenly.

In the nineteen nineties I was invited, with a group of other motoring journalists, to Naples, where we collected the first right hand drive Alfa 147s off the

production line. We drove them up through Italy into Switzerland, then through France to Goodwood in England, where a group of Irish dealers collected them for the final stage of the journey home. Once again these Alfas offered supreme driving pleasure, allied with an utterly fantastic all round performance.

There have been other Alfas that I liked and one or two that I disliked; one extremely so; down through the years. As a result, I approached this driving test report with extreme enthusiasm.

1.4 MULTI AIR PETROL My test car in this instance was a bright, pearlescent red, 1.4 litre Multi Air, petrol model, to the top Veloce specification. Beauty, naturally, is in the eye of the beholder, but in my eyes it was utterly magnificent. Inside it had black leather upholstery with red stitching. It comes loaded with electronic gadgets, which I find can be quite distracting, when you

should be concentrating on the road and traffic ahead. The two front seats are electrically adjustable for reach, height and backrest angle, with memory functions for three different settings. Naturally the steering wheel adjusts for reach and height as well. Both front seats also have heating options with three different settings. The instruments and controls were well laid out, so finding a comfortable driving position was no problem at all.

The 1368 cc, four cylinder, petrol engine, produces 125 kW @ 5,500 rpm, with 230 Nm @ 2,250 rpm. This equates to a fantastic 91.374 kW/lt. That is right up there in the super performance class! It is transmitted to the front wheels through a six speed manual gearbox. In a typically Alfa manner, drivers are offered the choice of three different settings for the performance, Dynamic - Normal and All weather. sporty sensation to the whole performance spectrum.

Normal is for everyday driving, while All weather is for wet and slippery conditions like rain, frost and snow. Thankfully I did not need to use this latter option. I did not bother with the Dynamic, as I found the Normal to be more than satisfactory for my test drive programme, taking in city, suburban and motorway driving conditions.

Indeed in motorway driving I had to keep an eagle eye on the speedometer, as the car would all too easily glide past the maximum of 125 kph (77 mph) and sail on towards much higher figures. Its quoted top speed is 218 kph (135 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in an exciting 7.8 seconds. Remember this is a

five door family hatchback, with a 1.4 litre engine, albeit a superbly sporting one, not a grand touring GT coupe.

Normally a performance of this calibre would require you to remortgage the house, every time you go to the filling station to refill the petrol tank.

However, the Multi Air engine in this installation gives an excellent 36 mpg on the urban cycle, stretching to a magnificent 61 mpg (4.6 lt/100 km) on the extra urban cycle and averaging 48 mpg (5.8 lt/100 km) on the combined cycle. Thus you can keep that happy, satisfied, grin on your face all the time. The outstandingly good fuel consumption, with this engine, also yields exhaust emissions of just 134 gm/km, putting the

car into Irish road tax band B, the second lowest.

Just as a matter of interest, away back in October 2007, I had a Volkswagen Golf GT on test, equipped with an engine of practically the same size. Its power and torque figures were very similar, as was its potential top speed and acceleration. Its fuel consumption, however, was not nearly as good and as a result, its exhaust emissions were a lot higher, so the Multi Air technology does have very positive benefits.

An electro-mechanical, power assisted, rack and pinion steering was fitted with a very sporty 2.25 turns from lock to lock. It had a good precise feel about it. The suspension used a rather

conventional MacPherson strut layout at the front, but with a substantial 27 mm anti-roll bar.

At the rear it was a simple multi-link design, with coil springs and telescopic dampers plus a 15 mm antiroll bar. It gave a good comfortable ride and roadholding. The servo assisted brakes come with anti-lock, electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist. The system worked in conjunction with the vehicle dynamic control, that included an anti-slip regulator, cornering brake control, hill holder assist, dynamic steering torque and a device called MSR, which reduces driving torque when a change is made into a lower gear, when braking.

The instrument binnacle contains two large and two small analogue dials, with black faces, white lettering and red needles. The speedometer is the large left hand dial, with the matching tachometer on the right. The fuel gauge is the small unit on the left, with the engine temperature on the right. Below them is a digital information panel. The audio system is in the top centre of the facia, just below the two air vents. There is a row of toggle switches below, separating the audio from the heating and ventilating controls. Three large, clearly marked, easy to use whilst driving, round selectors look after all the functions of the dual zone climate control. In the centre of the control knob the temperature selected is clearly marked. The centre knob looks after the distribution, head, body, feet etc. There are additional controls on the left hand arm of the steering wheel for the audio and on the right

hand arm for the Blue&Me telephone and associated equipment. Where heated front seats are fitted, the controls are just below the forward outer corner of each front seat cushion. Adjustments for the exterior rear view mirrors and the four electric windows are in the driver’s door armrest.

The sliding selector for the driving mode, is on the centre tunnel, ahead of the gearlever and under the round selector dial for the driver’s side heating.

Before the test period had expired, I was asked to return the car as a customer was interested in it. As a result I had to take many of the photographs in a hurry, in poor lighting conditions, so I apologise for the quality, as many of them are rather dark.

Likewise I had not gathered all the usual technical data, so I also apologise for any gaps in the data normally provided.

There was a benefit arising from the premature end of the test, as I was given a diesel powered car for the remainder of the normal test period. The diesel was a turbocharged, direct injection engine and so makes an interesting comparison with the 1.4 Multi Air petrol engine. The diesel was finished to the Lusso standard, so was not as luxuriously trimmed and equipped as the petrol model.

It did, however, have all the essential equipment needed for safe, comfortable and satisfying driving.

1.6 JTD DIESEL LUSSO Compared to the Multi Air engine, the diesel motor in the Giulietta is very tame indeed.

Its 78 kW comes in at 4,000 rpm, while its 280 Nm is reached at just 1,500 rpm. This certainly favours a more

relaxed driving style. Its specific power output is 48.811 kW/lt, which looks infinitesimal beside that of the Multi Air engine, but compared to other diesel engines of this capacity, like that in the Seat Leon, it compares reasonably well. The Seat has more torque and lower emissions, but the differences are not too great.

Its potential top speed and 0100 kph acceleration are almost identical and while the fuel consumption is a little different, overall it is of no consequence. It was comfortable and relaxed to drive, especially in city and suburban conditions, but it could still muster a good bit of acceleration when needed and motorway cruising was well within its capabilities. As its suspension is the same, it could easily handle any ride and roadholding demands made on it. Its front ventilated brake discs were a little smaller than that fitted to the Multi Air, yet it gave no indication that it was in any way inferior in its stopping power. The rear disc diameter was identical on both versions.

If ultimate performance is not your primary requirement, then the diesel could have a number of attractions. Its fuel consumption is lower, which gives lower exhaust emissions, allowing this model to fall into Irish road tax band A. Urban cycle fuel consumption is 51 mpg (5.5 lt/100 km), Extra urban 75 mpg (3.7 lt/100 km) giving a combined cycle average of 64 mpg (4.4 lt/100 km). Then the basic price of the diesel Lusso, is quite a lot less than that of the Multi Air Veloce. Of course, you do get a lot less fancy equipment with the Lusso specification when compared to the top of the range Veloce.

eveloped in Europe, for sale worldwide, the new Ford Focus is expected to reach these shores in March. Initially it will be offered in two body styles, a five door hatchback and an estate car. These new models are built on a wheelbase of 2648 mm. All versions come as standard with Torque Vectoring Control, which is designed to enhance cornering stability. Extensive development work has been carried out on the Control Blade rear suspension, for even better ride and roadholding and the steering now uses an electric power assisted system. Automatic stop/start is fitted to those models powered by the 1.6 EcoBoost petrol engine and the 1.6 TDCi diesel. The latter engine has emissions of just 109 gm/km, so it fits comfortably into Irish road tax band A, the lowest level. Other advanced systems on offer include Active Park Assist, Lane Keeping Aid, plus a Low Speed Safety System.

hen Fiat became associated with Chrysler recently, they took a small stake in the company, with an undertaking to accept an increasing stake in return for making Fiat engines, platforms and smaller models available to the Chrysler Corporation. Basically Chryslers were to be rebadged as Lancias. No mention was made of Dodge at the time, so it is interesting to see that the first new Fiat model, to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show, is actually a rebadged Dodge.

The Dodge Journey was a diesel engine, supplied by great car. My road test of the Volkswagen. The TSI engine uses both a supercharger and a turbocharger. The power delivered allows a top speed of 225 kph (139 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 7.3 seconds.

he Kia KV7 concept MPV made its International debut at the Detroit Motor Show. Designed

by Kia’s California design studio, it is said to challenge the idea that MPVs are strictly for family transportation. While it is perfectly capable of transporting a number of people, it is also intended to be a social hub for friends and adventure seekers.

Immediately noticeable are the large gull-wing side door and the front door without a B-pillar.

These features are intended to give an easy access to the innovative interior. The interior is completely revolutionary, with four, custom designed swivelling seats, plus a mini lounge in the rear corner offering seating for three people. The floor is covered in reclaimed teak, while wool and felt are used extensively to give a warm and inviting interior.

When the driver pushes the start button, the entire dashboard moves six inches closer to the driver. There is a large display screen that accommodates, the heating and ventilating, navigation and other systems, all controlled by a trackball mouse mounted on the facia. Rear seat passengers have their own table top touch screen. Extensive use is made of LED lighting in the interior.

Power is provided by Kia’s Theta 2, two litre, turbocharged GDI engine linked to a six speed automatic transmission.

KV7 is a large car in the North American tradition, riding on a 3100 mm wheelbase, 4873 mm in overall length, 2033 mm wide and 1729 mm high. This may possibly restrict interest in the vehicle in other markets like Europe.
