MAXWELL MOTORS RE-OPENS rank Keane Holdings has bucked the trend that has seen over 100 motor dealerships close over the last three years by announcing the reopening of Maxwell Motors and the employing of 18 people. he Seat Altea is built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Touran and it has access to the same engines, transmissions and other mechanical components as the Volkswagen. However, it has its own unique body and styling, with its own interior design, materials and finish. My test car was fitted with the 1.6 litre, turbocharged, direct injection, diesel engine, plus automatic stop/start programming and delivered its power to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. It provided seating space for five adults, with a large and adaptable luggage capacity. It is thus a very competent family car.

On the Urban cycle it is credited with 54 mpg (5.2 lt/100 km) stretching to an impressive 68 mpg (4.1 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle. This gives an average of 62 mpg (4.5 lt/100 km) on the combined cycle. However, to achieve these impressive performances, it has rather high widely spaced gear ratios. This is no problem if the driving conditions are favourable, but in the slow crawling suburban traffic encountered in many Irish urban areas, it means you have to trickle along in second or third gear, as the others do not have the necessary torque to

cater for the slow, crawling conditions. In favourable conditions, you can glide along in fourth or fifth, without difficulty. Overall exhaust emissions are 119 gm/km, so this big comfortable car still falls into Irish road tax band A, with a current annual charge of â&#x201A;Ź104. So it provides just what the family motorist needs in these times, good economy and low operating costs.

This does not come at the expense of performance, as where conditions permit it has a potential top speed of 183 kph (113 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 12.4 seconds. If you do need even more space, it can carry up to 75 kg on the roof, but remember that weight includes the weight of the roofbox and all its necessary mountings. When only two seats are needed, and the rear seats are folded flat, it offers up to 1.605 cubic metres of space, so it is well able to accommodate occasional needs like the ability to carry items of household or garden furniture. In addition it has extra space under a removable floor for small items or for maximum space. Finally it can also tow trailers/caravans of up to 1400 kg, or 740 kg if they are not fitted with brakes. It is thus a truly versatile and adaptable family car. The only negative factor, from a towing point of view, is that it has a Spacesaver spare wheel, which is not really suitable for the extra weights associated with towing. Thus from an everyday point of view, the Altea XL is a comfortable, spacious, practical, adaptable family car. It is also comfortable and easy to drive. Its ride and roadholding are good and the brakes seem well able to cope with all conditions. The steering is light yet precise, with 3.0 turns from lock to lock. The wheel itself adjusts for both reach and height. Manoeuvring in tight spaces is greatly facilitated by the excellent exterior rear view mirrors. The two front seats are very comfortable and adjust for reach, height and backrest angle. The three rear seats are also comfortable. As in most cars today, the centre section tends to be harder in the cushion than those on either side. The two outer places are equipped with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats.

When only the two outer positions are occupied, passengers can avail of a folding central armrest. When folded down it has two cupholders. If you need to carry both rear seat passengers and long loads, the backrest is divided 60/40 to facilitate this. The instruments and driving controls are all laid out for convenience and ease of use. contd. from page 6 dials. The smaller central dial is the tachometer and is directly in your line of sight. From 4,500 rpm to 6,000 rpm the graduations are marked in red. the others are all white. On the right is the speedometer. It is marked in increments of 20 kph. but there are small red markings for the 30 kph, 50 kph and 130 kph. The black background of the speedometer is also used to highlight various items, such as an open door, a seat belt unfastened and the handbrake applied, which are shown as red warning lights. Matching the speedometer on the left is a large circular background that houses the fuel level (left) and engine temperature (right) gauges in its upper section. The lower

section has a rectangular digital information panel that shows information like, the time, distance to empty, total distance odometer and trip distance recorder. Below the two centre air vents at the top of the centre console, there are controls associated with the air conditioning. Push buttons for the heated rear window, internal air recirculation and the on/off for the airconditioning. Below that the three circular dials look after, from left to right, temperature selector, fan speed and distribution; windscreen face, feet and windscreen plus feet. The audio system is below these three round dials. The hazard warning switch is ahead of the gearlever, with two cupholders ahead of it.

There are additional controls on the left hand arm of the steering wheel for the audio system and the Bluetooth mobile telephone facilities. Over on the right of the facia, under the circular air vent the is a round switch for the lights with a roller adjuster alongside for the headlamp levelling. All controls are clearly marked, easy to see and use whilst driving. This all helps to contribute to the relaxed and effortless driving pleasure. Make no mistake about it, while the Seat Altea XL is a spacious, comfortable, versatile family car, it also offers outstanding driving pleasure in a most relaxed and effortless manner.

he Puebla plant is the largest automobile factory in Mexico and one of the Volkswagen Group's biggest vehicle manufacturing plants. It supplies North and South America as well as Europe with the new Jetta. The Beetle and Golf Variant are built exclusively by Volkswagen de México for world markets. Within minutes the exact colour match was made and the finishing touches were being put to an expert job. Even at close inspection it was hard to see where the repair had been, such was the attention to detail in preparing the surface and matching the paint colour.
