Out of Africa t a time when many of us are only worried about ourselves one man from the motor industry gave a week of his time to help those less fortunate than us. Maurice Byrne (pictured left), Sales Manager at Gowan Motors Glenageary, spent a week in Zambia building houses. He travelled, as part of a group involved with the businessman Bobby Kerr, to Lusaka. The local community in the Zambian city have been badly affected by AIDS and housing conditions are exceptionally bad. Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world with over half the population living on less than $1 a day. The help from the Irish volunteers was greatly appreciated by a local population who saw block built houses replacing the shanty homes that had been there before the Irish group arrived to help. “It was a fantastic experience that I’d recommend to anyone,” said Maurice when looking back on his African adventure.

T
his test has been a long time coming. I first saw the Audi A1 at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The test car was registered in 2010, but due to pressure of work it is only now that I have been able to get around to it. One of the things I really liked about it was the vibrant, red colour with its deep gloss. The silver roof arches certainly set it off, but I am in two minds as to whether I would pay the extra €475 this costs. But as we all know, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and one man’s meat is another’s poison.”

On first taking over the car, I found the suspension to be a bit on the hard side, but as time passed I got used to it and it never bothered me. The engine also appeared to be a bit on the noisy side at times, but then it is a young person’s car and this would probably not bother them. The car was fitted with an automatic stop/start as standard, but this can be switched off if you prefer not to have it. It reactivates itself each time you switch on the engine, but the switch is easily accessible on the top centre
of the facia, so is conveniently reached if you want to switch it off. Power is provided by a 1.6 litre, turbocharged, direct injection, diesel engine, driving the front wheels, through a five speed manual gearbox. It is relatively mildly tuned with a specific power output of just 48.185 kW/lt. However, like most diesels, it has a healthy torque output of 250 Nm between 1,500 and 2.500 rpm. This gives it a frugal fuel consumption of 60 mpg (4.7 lt/100 km) on the urban cycle,

rising to an excellent 80 mpg (3.5 lt/100 km) on the extra urban cycle and averaging 72 mpg (3.9 lt/100 km) on the combined cycle. This low fuel consumption gives an exhaust emissions reading of 103 gm/km, allowing the A1 to fit into Irish road tax band A. Although it uses very little fuel, its performance, velocity wise is certainly not lacking. Top speed is 190 kph (118 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 10.5 seconds. contd. on page 6

The test car came with a lot of optional extras, which is surprising, as I would expect a premium brand like Audi to fit these as standard. Included in the list were things like, heated, electrically adjustable, exterior rear view mirrors, a leather covered steering wheel, climate control, Bluetooth telephone facilities, Xenon headlamps, with LED daytime running lights, plus a concert radio and ten speaker sound system. These all add a not inconsiderable €4,453 to the price. On a practical side, it offers 0.270 cubic metres of luggage space, with all seats
in use, and 0.920 cubic metres when the rear seats are folded flat. The car comes without a spare wheel, but there is a black polystyrene tray under the boot floor, with compartments for storing smaller items. The instruments and
controls are well laid out. The radio/CD is at the top of the centre console, below the two circular air vents. The three knobs for the climate control are immediately below. Over on the right, below the air vent, there is a rotary control for the lighting system. The two large round dials ahead of the steering wheel are the tachometer (left) and speedometer (right). At the bottom of the tachometer there is a small round dial for the engine temperature, while the matching dial at the bottom of the speedometer is the fuel level gauge. Between the two large dials there is a digital information panel. The two horizontal arms of the
steering wheel have additional audio related controls. Like all two door cars, the doors are rather long, which makes getting in or out, difficult, especially in our ridiculously narrow parking bays. This is even more difficult for rear seat passengers, as they need the door fully open to manoeuvre themselves in or out. Inside the front seats are comfortable and wellbolstered, with an adequate range of adjustments. The two rear seats are comfortable, but as they are also designed to fold flat to increase luggage space, they tend to be flatter than the front pair. The two front seats adjust for reach, height, backrest angle and lumbar support. The steering adjusts for reach and height, so it should be possible for most people to find a comfortable position. Talking of the steering it is geared to give 2.7 turns from lock to lock and its electromechanical power assistance, takes most of the effort out of manoeuvring, whilst still giving the driver a good feel when driving. The gearchange is smooth and positive, making the car relaxing and pleasant to drive. Using ventilated discs at the front and plain discs at the rear, the braking system includes all the modern applications like anti-lock, emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. It works in conjunction with an electronic stability programme that includes traction control. Suspension is based on MacPherson struts at the front with a torsion beam and trailing arms at the back.

ars don’t come much odder looking these days than the new MINI Coupe, due to be launched in Europe in the last quarter of this year. Buyers will have the choice of four cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The range starts with the 90 kW MINI Cooper Coupe, followed by the 105 kW Mini Cooper SD Coupe, with its diesel engine. Next comes the 135 kW MINI Cooper S Coupe followed by the top of the range 155 kW John Cooper Works Coupe. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a six speed manual gearbox. As an option the Cooper, Cooper S and Cooper SD models may be had with an automatic Steptronic gearbox, with shift paddles on the steering wheel. Two interesting design features are the rear boot lid spoiler, that opens up automatically at

MERCEDES C CLASS COUPE ollowing in the tyre tracks of its new saloon and estate sisters, the new C class coupe, comes with the choice of five engine options, two diesel and three petrol. All models come with an Eco Stop/Start system and a seven speed G-Tronic manual/automatic gearbox. Both the entry level petrol, with its 1.8 litre, four cylinder, 116 kW engine and the 2.2 litre, four cylinder, 126 kW diesel engine, have exhaust emissions of less than 120 gm/km, allowing

them both into Irish road tax band A, with a current annual charge of 104 euro. The petrol model is priced at Euro 36,000, while the diesel is priced at Euro 39,990. There is also a 152 kW version of both the 1.8 petrol and the 2.2 diesel engine. Top of the range engine is a 3.5 litre V6 petrol delivering 228 kW. This gives it a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 6.0 seconds, while its combined cycle fuel consumption is 41 mpg (6.8 lt/100 km).
VW Golf Edition-R Volkswagen’s Golf Edition-R is a limited edition model tailored especially for the Irish market. Slotting in between the Comfortline and Highline specifications, it offers a good level of standard equipment at a reasonable price. Reasonable in an Irish context, that is. Back in October 2010, a Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion entered the record books with a fantastic performance of 89.83 mpg (3.276 lt/100 km). This resulted from a journey of 1,527.63 miles (2458 km) being travelled on a tank of fuel. Volkswagen has determined to improve on even this outstanding figure, with a BlueMotion version of the latest, seventh generation Passat, introduced in January of this year. This latest seventh generation Passat with BlueMotion technology adds even more fuel saving ideas and devices including low rolling resistance tyres and a lowered suspension. If you’ve ever wondered if there was a way to repair those small nicks and scratches without an expensive trip to the body shop then the service of ChipsAway could be just what you are looking for. Even at close inspection it was hard to see where the repair had been, such was the attention to detail in preparing the surface and matching the paint colour. arrives he new, third generation, Mercedes-Benz SLK, launched internationally at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, has now arrived in Ireland. Like its two predecessors, it has a folding metal top, which is stored in the luggage area when not needed. We featured the new SLK comprehensively in our Geneva Motor Show report, so rather than repeat it all again, may we refer anyone interested to click on Roadsters, under the New model heading up on the right of the title page, where they will find all the necessary information. Information specific to the Irish market, follows below. Entry model for the Irish market is the SLK 200 CGI BlueEfficiency which comes with a price of €49,700. It is in Irish road tax band C, with an annual charge, at present rates of 302 euro. It is powered by a 1.8 litre, four cylinder petrol engine, producing 135 kW, which gives it a potential top speed of 236 kph (146 mph) and 0-100 kph

acceleration in 7.0 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 47 mpg (6.0 lt/100 km). Next up the scale is the SLK 250 BlueEfficiency delivering 150 kW. It has a top speed of 243 kph (150 mph) with 0-100 kph in 6.6 seconds. Exhaust emissions are 144 gm/km, so it too is in Irish road tax band C. Top of the range is the SLK 350 BlueEfficiency, powered by a 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine, with a power output of 225 kW and a top speed electronically governed to 250 kph (155 mph) and 0-100 kph acceleration in 5.6 seconds. Later in the year Mercedes-Benz will offer a diesel engine in the SLK model for the first time. This model is the four cylinder SLK 250 CDI BlueEfficiency. Prices and performance figures will be released closer to its introduction.

800 more people working in Motor Industry
Figures released recently from the CSO show that an extra 800 people are employed in the Motor Industry*. Earlier this year, the SIMI also announced that an additional 2,200 jobs had been created. These 800 jobs come on the back of an increase in new car sales of 14% in the first quarter of the year. Every new job is a net gain of €23,000** so these 800 jobs represent a saving of €14 million for the economy. Audi A6 Avant rder books for the new Audi A6 Avant are now open, with the first customer deliveries expected to take place in October. Prices start from €46,450. Buyers will have a choice of both FSI petrol engines and TDI diesel engines. The jewel in the crown is expected to be an all new 3.0 litre V6 twin turbocharged diesel. Maximum boost pressure in this engine is 3.2 bar, which gives a power output of 233 kW, allowing a top speed electronically limited to 250 kph (155 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in a very impressive 5.4 seconds. Other engines on offer are a four cylinder 2.0 litre TDI delivering 131 kW, with exhaust emissions of just 132 gm/km, allowing this version into Irish road tax band B, with an annual charge, at current rates, of €156. It is expected to be the most popular model amongst Irish motorists. Buyers will have the choice of a 6-speed manual transmission, or a Multitronic CVT automatic, both driving the front wheels. There is also the choice of two 3.0 litre V6 diesels, producing 152 kW and 182 kW respectively. On the petrol side there is a 2.8 litre V6 and a 3.0 litre V6.

Depending on the engine fitted, a six speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission, is fitted on on front wheel drive models, while Quattro all wheel drive versions have a 7 speed S-Tronic transmission.
