new third generation of the SLK was on display in Geneva. It comes with the choice of three different petrol engines, all of them with BlueEfficiency technology. The selection starts with the four cylinder 200 engine, with a capacity of 1796 cc, producing 135 kW. When

fitted with the optional 7GTronic Plus automatic gearbox it has exhaust emissions of 142 gm/km. Top speed is 240 kph (149 mph) with the manual gearbox and 237 kph (147 mph), with the 7G-Tronic Plus. Acceleration from 0100 kph is 7.0 seconds with either transmission.
Next is another 1796 cc four cylinder engine, the 250. It comes as standard with the 7G-Tronic Plus transmission, but will be offered with a six speed manual gearbox at a later stage. Its power output is 150 kW, which gives a top speed of 243 kph (150 mph) with 0-100 kph in 6.6
seconds. Its exhaust emissions are 144 gm/km. Top of the range is a 3498 cc V6 delivering 225 kW. This gives a top speed of 250 kph (155 mph) with 0-100 kph in 5.6 seconds. Exhaust emissions are 167 gm/km. All three engines come with automatic stop/start as
standard. Buyers will have the choice of three new roof structures. The standard folding metal roof, is painted in body colour. As an option there is a panoramic glass folding roof with tinted glass. Then there is the Magic Sky Control roof, which is basically the panoramic glass roof, but with transparent glass. Thus you can experience an open air type ambience, even with the roof erected. At the press of a button the glass goes dark, thus offering sun protection on really hot sunny days. Buyers also have the option of three different suspension options. Standard suspension is a steel based design. Option one is the same suspension, but with firmer springs and dampers, for a more sports orientated driving experience. Then there is the Dynamic Handling Package, that has electronically controlled, fully automatic dampers, that can offer excellent comfort, even over poor surfaces, but still give sporty driving dynamics. The Dynamic Handling Package also gives torque vectoring brakes and a direct steer system. Direct Steer offers more agile handling, whilst reducing the amount of effort when parking and manoeuvring. The third generation body shell uses aluminium for the bonnet and wings.

hen Ford introduced the first C-Max some years ago, I remember being very favourably impressed with the car. My only surprise was when, in answer to a question regarding the possibility of a seven seater, the company told us they had conducted extensive market research and that there was no demand for a seven seater. We were all very surprised, as Opel with their pace-setting Zafira, Renault with the Scenic, Volkswagen with the Touran, had all adopted the seven seat strategy. Now at last Ford has attended to that deficiency in their C-Max model. They give you the option of the five seater C-Max, or the seven seater Grand C-Max.

Like its competitors the two extra seats fold away under the luggage floor, so in five seater mode you have a very commodious luggage space, as befits a family car. The two extra seats, whilst being comfortable, are clearly mainly intended for emergency use. Luggage space
in seven seater mode is minimal and access to the two rearmost seats is not all that convenient, in spite of the large sliding rear doors. The centre row seating is split into three sections. The two outer seats are roomy and comfortable. The centre section

is both narrow and less comfortably padded. Its backrest can be folded flat onto the seat cushion and then the whole unit can be lifted sideways and stored under the cushion of the right hand outer seat. This leaves a space between the two outer seats, which the driver’s
handbook suggests can be used for access to the two rear seats. The alternative is to slide one of the outer centre row seats forward and then let its backrest tilt forward as far as possible. This doesn’t give a lot of space between the rear of the seat and contd. on page 6

the side of the body for access. It is easier getting in, as you are stepping up into an area that is visible, whereas getting out you are bent over to avoid the roof and stepping down into an area that is not easily visible from your position inside the car. As far as I could determine, only the two outer seats in the centre row, are fitted with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. Possibly this doesn’t matter as the additional seats are mainly used for larger children, when running them and their friends around to activities like sporting events, drama groups, dancing classes and extra activities of a similar nature. For mom and dad, seated up front, things are a lot more luxurious and comfortable. Their seats are spacious and comfortable with a full range of adjustments for reach height and backrest angle. The driver can adjust the steering
for both reach and height and the leather covered steering wheel has a smooth and luxurious feel, which contributes enormously to the overall driving pleasure. The facia is very avant garde and futuristic looking. There is a digital information panel at the top, with a useful shelf in front of it. All the audio system controls are in a fancy panel below that. A much smaller panel ahead of the gearlever has the controls for the dual range climate control system. All these controls, both audio and heating/ventilating are clearly marked and easy to see whilst driving. The instrument binnacle ahead of the driver is likewise easy to see whilst driving. The analogue dials have black faces, white lettering with blue needles and red highlights. The two larger dials are for the tachometer (left) and speedometer (right), whilst the two smaller
dials are for fuel level (left) and engine temperature (right). Above these two smaller dials there is a digital information panel that can be programmed to show a variety of different information. The steering wheel has further controls on each horizontal arm and a whole variety on stalks on either side below the steering wheel. This latter plethora of controls can be utterly confusing, if you are trying to concentrate on the driving. I must admit that I never even attempted to fathom any of them out, let alone tried to use them. The power assisted steering was comfortable, with a good feel and gave two and a half turns from lock to lock. Manoeuvring and driving both in traffic and out on the open road was helped by the fact that the two exterior rear view mirrors gave an excellent view along each side of the car.
Considering its capacity the engine was relatively modestly tuned with a specific output of just 44.871 kW/lt. Maximum torque of 230 Nm was produced between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm, which allowed you to cruise along at modest speeds with comparatively low engine speeds. The power output if pushed to the limit was capable of delivering a top speed of 166 kph (103 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in a leisurely 13.5 seconds. This may appear to be rather modest for a car of this size, but it is more than adequate for a modern family car, especially with young children as passengers. If the velocity is modest, its fuel consumption is just what is needed in a large, versatile family car. On the urban cycle it is credited with 48 mpg (5.8 lt/100 km), improving to 64 mpg (4.4 lt/100 km) on the extra urban cycle. This gives a combined cycle average of 57 mpg (4.9 lt/100 km). The Grand C-Max is certainly not the leader of the pack in the seven seater MPV field, when it comes to performance and fuel economy, but it is not away behind its main competitors either. Unlike some of its competitors, it does come with a spare wheel, albeit a Spacesaver. While this is handy for normal daily use, it is not much use if you are towing a trailer or caravan. The Grand C-Max can tow braked trailers/caravans of up to 1200 kg in weight. Unbraked trailers are limited to a maximum weight of 750 kg. Roof loads are limited to

To celebrate the occasion, Mazda are producing a special edition, to be known as the Kendo, that will be available in both roadster and roadster coupe models. It goes on sale on the 1st March 2011. Based on the standard SE specification, the Kendo versions have a Stone grey leather interior, with grey stitching on the steering wheel and handbrake. INFINITI I nfiniti is to Nissan, what Lexus is to Toyota. Initially the brand was launched on the North American market, where it seems to have competed very successfully. In recent times it has broadened its marketing to include several European markets. As it is an upmarket luxury brand it will take several more years before it appears on the Irish market, if it appears at all. The convertible interior pictured above gives a good idea of the luxury, quality and refinement that is on offer.
The G37 is offered in both convertible and coupe body styles. With the coupe there is the choice of rear wheel drive, or all wheel drive, but the convertible only comes with rear wheel drive. Buyers do have the choice of a six speed manual transmission or a seven speed manual/automatic. Interestingly the automatic is the better option, as while top speed is the same, being limited to 250 kph (155 mph), the 0-100 kph is slightly better with the automatic, being 6.4 seconds compared
to 6.7 seconds for the six speed manual. Exhaust emissions are also better at 264 gm/km compared to 275 gm/km. Not that this would make any difference here in Ireland, as anything over 225 gm/km, falls into Irish road tax band G, with an annual rip-off, at present rates, of 2100 euro. Power is provided by a 3.6 litre V6 petrol engine delivering 235 kW @ 7,000 and 360 Nm @ 5,200 rpm. Infiniti’s luxury M series saloon
comes with the choice of 3.0 litre V6 diesel, 3.6 litre V6 petrol, 5.6 litre V8 petrol and a petrol electric hybrid. Petrol power for the Hybrid is a 3.5 litre V6 engine, giving 225 kW @ 6,800 rpm, plus 350 Nm @ 5,000 rpm, linked to an AC synchronous 50kW/275Nm electric traction motor. This combination drives through a seven speed automatic transmission. Top speed is limited to 250 kph (155 mph) with 0-100 kph in 5.5 seconds.
Exhaust emissions are 162 gm/km. This would put it in Irish road tax band D, with a much more reasonable annual charge of €448.
