NEW PRESIDENT FOR IRISH MOTOR INDUSTRY lan Lyons has been elected President of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) at the organisation's 44th AGM, held at Croke Park.

The new President addressed delegates and spoke about the difficulties in the aftermarket sector, "There is a double blow when new car sales fall; not only does car sales’ activity reduce but there are fewer cars to service and repair.

Allied to this is a flourishing black market, which always occurs when incomes fall and the Motor Industry is a prime example of that.

“The sale of dubious car parts and in particular 'partworn tyres', has escalated as consumers make false shortterm savings that will come back to haunt them in the longer run. There isn't a

member garage out there who hasn't had a customer return after getting a botched service job from an unqualified mechanic using sub-standard, and in some cases unsafe, parts."

Mr. Lyons highlighted the need for members to get back to basics; "SIMI members have the highest qualified technicians in the Industry and undoubtedly we provide the highest quality of service."

Backing up this assertion, the SIMI recently launched SIMI APR (Autosure Professional Register) to raise awareness of the importance for motorists to have their vehicles serviced when they should be and only in garages which are fully qualified to do so. NEW EU TYRE LEGISLATION New EU legislation for tyres comes into effect in November of this year. By this date at the latest, all tyres sold in the EU must carry a label that specifies rolling resistance, wet braking performance and external tyre/road noise.

Implementation of the new labelling regulations will require tyre manufacturers to operate a self certification policy, but sanctions for violations and non compliance are to remain within the remit of national law in the twenty seven EU member states. A validation operation will take place in spring 2016, around 40 months after the EU tyre label comes into force, to critically review whether

the labelling targets have been met. The effectiveness of the communication at the point of sale will be a particular focus of the review.

Speaking about the new EU tyre label, Paddy Murphy, General Manager of Continental Tyres in Ireland said: “We welcome the new EU tyre label, as it provides consumers with much greater information on the performance of a tyre in terms of safety and fuel consumption before

purchase. Whilst this is far more information than a motorist might normally see when buying tyres, we still see a need for more information to aid drivers, as the new tyre label only specifies three important tyre properties, but fails to highlight a number of other criteria that are just as important, for example resistance to aquaplaning, handling and dry braking distances”.

Classifications for all

three criteria on the EU tyre label must be displayed on every tyre sold in the EU from November of this year.

This applies to all tyres produced from July 1st 2012 onwards. The regulations also stipulate

that these values are to be quoted in the technical or promotional literature, on manufacturer’s websites, and price lists as well.

As affixing the EU tyre label forms an additional requirement and needs a

considerable lead time, many tyres on sale at retail outlets will already bear the new markings in advance of the November deadline.

Tyres produced before July 1st 2012 can still be sold without labels.

I was very impressed with this Toyota Auris Hybrid. What impressed me most was the smooth and silent progress at all times, not just when running in electric mode.

Then there was the seamless switch from electric power to petrol or petrol/electric combined power, as the operating conditions demanded. Were it not for the gauge in the speedometer, indicating the constantly changing power sources, I would never have known, that the power supply was changing from time to time. Adding to the comfortable and effortless nature of the driving experience was the Constantly Variable automatic Transmission. When reverse was selected there was an audible warning, which was useful for pedestrians and anyone who may be in close proximity to the car. In addition the reversing camera gave a visual picture of the area behind the car, in a colour illustration on the left hand side of the internal rear view mirror.

The electric power assisted steering, is geared to give 2.8 turns from lock to lock. The steering wheel itself adjusts for both reach and height. It has a good quality feel with its luxurious leather covering and gives a positive feel of the road.

I found the rear legroom to be good, but that naturally depends on how far back the two front seats are positioned. However, while I was able to get perfectly comfortable in the rear seat, I am also of the opinion, that as far as adults are concerned, it is only suitable for two persons. It may be suitable for three children, but

even teenagers may find the centre position, to be far too uncomfortable. The two outer positions are fitted with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats.

The rear seat backrest is divided 60/40 to give extra versatility and facilitate the carrying of awkward items of luggage. The luggage space between the luggage compartment floor and the underside of the removable shelf, is on the small size for a car in this price range and segment of the market. However, when you lift the luggage floor covering, there is a large removable plastic box, that can hold a lot of smaller items. It sits above the Spacesaver spare wheel.

The Auris Hybrid is unsuitable for towing trailers and caravans and I suspect carrying loads on the roof is not recommended either.

From a driving point of view, the instruments and controls are laid out for comfort and ease of use. The curved top instrument binnacle contains two large round dials. That on the right hand side is the speedometer, which also contains a digital view of the power source and flow. It contains other markings too,

indicating which performance mode has been selected; EV, Eco or Power. The matching dial on the left is divided into segments around the circumference.

Starting on the left with blue markings, it indicates the charge level of the traction batteries, next comes two Eco mode segments with green markings, helping the driver to adopt a more economical driving style. Finally one large Power segment with white markings, shows the level of power being supplied for acceleration and maximum performance. The centre of this gauge has two other indicators, that on the left being the fuel level and alongside on the right the engine temperature indicator.

The left hand arm of the steering wheel contains additional controls for the audio system, while on the right hand arm there are switches for the mobile telephone facilities. The audio/CD are at the top of the centre console, below the two air vents. Below this are the switches associated with the climate control installation. Below the centrally position gear selector, there are three selector buttons for the EV mode, Eco mode and Power mode. Controls

for setting and adjusting the exterior rear view mirrors are on the lower side of the facia between the steering column and the driver’s door. There is also a switch here for folding in the mirrors when parking. The driver’s door armrest has buttons for the central locking and for raising or lowering the four electric windows. The left hand stalk under the steering wheel looks after the headlamp beam adjustments and the direction indicators, while the right hand arm controls the wipers and washers. There is a covered vanity mirror in each sun visor.

On the road the car rides and handles well. The electronically controlled braking system incorporates anti-lock, emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution with vehicle stability control and a hill holder assist. It uses 296 mm diameter ventilated discs at the front and 259 mm plain discs at the back.

The Luxury specification of the Auris Hybrid is fitted with seventeen inches diameter, five spoke, cast alloy wheels, shod with 215/45 R 17 Michelin Primacy HP tyres.

New scheme to raise standards of car servicing in Ireland he SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) recently launched the SIMI Autosure Professional Register (SIMI APR), a new scheme to professionalise car servicing in Ireland.

According to a recent survey, two thirds of motorists are putting off their car service because they cannot afford it.

Past President of SIMI, Gerry Caffrey says, “There are a lot of drivers out there who don’t get their car serviced because there’s nothing visibly wrong with it. Many wait until something serious goes wrong, such as engine or a brake failure. That’s when it’s often too late and the cost to fix the vehicle far outweighs the cost of the initial service.”

“It is understandable that people are looking to save money where they can. It may seem like an unnecessary spend when money is tight but regular car servicing will save you money in the long term.”

“There has been a big increase in untrained and illegal operators at the fringes of our Industry offering to service cars. While it may seem like a bargain at the time, often the work carried out by such operators is to a poor standard, which could leave a car in dangerous condition and the owner out of pocket when something goes wrong with their car.”

Cars have become increasingly complex and in need of very

specific servicing expertise, even using the wrong grade of oil can seriously damage a modern engine.

Similar to the RECI scheme currently in operation for Electrical Contractors, only qualified technicians can sign off on service work carried out. Parts that need replacement will be kept to show the necessity of such replacement, which will only be done on the customer’s specific instructions, and only original car parts, or parts of matching quality, will be used.

After the service work is signed off by a qualified technician, an SIMI APR sticker with the current year will be placed on the window of the car, to show that it was serviced to the highest possible standard. A record over time of adhering to such professional servicing should also ensure a much greater value on the vehicle when the time comes to trade it in.

“Getting the SIMI APR sticker on your car will be a stamp of quality; an assurance that the car was maintained to the highest possible standard, by the highest qualified technicians in the Industry” says Mr. Caffrey.

Noel Brett, CEO of the RSA says, “the RSA fully welcomes the SIMI APR scheme which will help motorists understand why getting their annual service is so important, not only from an economical point of view but from a road safety aspect. consider the consequences of some car crashes, simple maintenance and regular servicing is absolutely necessary.”

“There has been a sharp rise in the sale of part-worn tyres and second hand parts recently.

Unbeknownst to the motorist, these could have been used on a car that was previously involved in a crash and beyond the point at which they could be safely used, you just don’t know. In addition,

the driver will not know how such parts will perform under use and we know that many are seriously substandard.”

“We urge people to get their car serviced to the high standard set out in this initiative, which will ensure that if any problems are developing in your car, they can be detected and fixed before they become a serious problem, states Mr. Brett.”

Mr Caffrey adds, “I’m aware

that in these financially challenging times, motorists can often be apprehensive about the costs of getting their car serviced.”

“With SIMI APR, when a quotation is given in advance and it becomes apparent that extra work or parts are required, the garage should always contact the customer first before proceeding with the work. If there is an issue with any work carried out by an

SIMI member garage, customers can avail of the free, independent complaints service on offer by the SIMI.” Under the SIMI APR scheme, the customer will receive an information leaflet after the service has been carried out and information on the specific work carried out on their vehicle.

Motorists should look out for the SIMI APR logo when they go to get their next service.

t is said that first impressions are lasting. This Toyota Avensis certainly made an excellent first impression, with is spacious interior and absolutely top quality interior finish. The steering wheel was covered with a smooth luxurious feeling leather. The seats were upholstered in a combination of soft cream coloured leather and suede cloth. The two front seats were well shaped and comfortable, while the rear bench seat was both spacious and comfortable, with ISOfix fittings in the two outer positions for child safety seats. The centre section had a folding armrest that incorporated two cupholders. The instruments and controls were well laid out for comfort and ease of use whilst driving.

On the road the two litre diesel engine was smooth and almost silent in operation. The gear change was likewise smooth and positive in operation, making the Avensis a relaxing pleasure to drive. The electric, power assisted steering required just 2.7 turns from lock to lock and it too was smooth and effortless in operation, but still transmitted a good feel of the road to the driver.

This model is credited with a top speed of 200 kph (124 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in just 9.8 seconds. This spirited performance does not come at the expense of fuel consumption, as by EU testing standards, combined cycle fuel consumption is 61 mpg (4.6 lt/100 km). Under Urban cycle

conditions it is still a very creditable 50 mpg (5.6 lt/100 km).

The instrument binnacle, with its curved hood, houses two large, round analogue dials, that on the left being the tachometer, with a matching speedometer on the right. The tachometer has a gearshift indicator to help drivers get the best fuel consumption possible in the actual driving conditions.

Between the tachometer and the speedometer there are two digital gauges back to back. Facing the tachometer there is an engine temperature gauge, while the fuel level gauge faces the speedometer. information panel, that provides a lot of additional information, like the average speed and the trip distance recorder. The right hand horizontal arm of the steering wheel has buttons connected with the Bluetooth mobile telephone facilities, while on the left hand horizontal arm there similar controls for the audio system. The steering wheel is adjustable for both reach and height.

The audio system itself is located at the top of the centre console, below the two air vents. It consists of a CD player and a large screen that serves both the audio system and the satellite navigation.

On either side of this screen there are further audio controls on the left, while the matching controls on the right serve the satellite navigation and the Bluetooth facilities.

The panel below the audio system houses the dual range climate control. There is a further small panel below this and above the fold away ashtray, that has a button with an indicator light, to switch off the front passenger seat airbag.

On the driver’s door armrest there are four switches for the electric windows, plus two switches for the central locking and unlocking, besides a switch to neutralise the rear window opening. On the lower side of the right hand section of the facia, below the air vent, there are controls for the adjustments of the two exterior rear view mirrors, plus a switch to automatically fold the exterior mirrors in or out. There is also a button to Start or Stop the engine as required. To do this the key fob has to be within the vicinity, in your pocket or handbag or in the car itself.

On the left hand side, between the steering column and the central console, there is a switch for the electric handbrake. This is low down and not all that easy to find, until you get used to its location. Its operation is also confusing until you get accustomed to it. Over the years, with mechanically operated handbrakes, we have become accustomed to pulling them up to apply the brakes and pushing them

down to release the brakes.

On the Avensis, you push down on the switch to apply the brakes and pull up to release them. The left hand stalk under the steering wheel, controls the lights and direction indicators, while the right hand stalk operates the wipers and washers.

On the road the car rides and handles well. In fact it provides a real limousine quality ride. Visibility is good all round, which is a great help when reversing or manoeuvring in confined spaces. It has a large luggage boot and there is a ski-hatch behind the folding rear armrest, for carrying longer, awkward items, like skis, fishing rods, or similar items, without drastically reducing passenger carrying abilities. If you need even more space, the rear seat backrest is divided 60/40, but this does reduce passenger carrying capacity.

Below the luggage floor, above the Spacesaver spare wheel, there is a black polystyrene tray that holds the jack, wheel spanner and screw-in towing eye. It also

has open compartments for holding small items of luggage or similar things.

This Avensis can tow braked trailers/caravans of up to 1600 kg in weight, or unbraked trailers of 500 kg. If you are thinking of towing, you will need to get a full size spare wheel. Maximum roof loading is 75 kg.

Toyota are very proud of their slogan, “The Best Built cars in the World !” Certainly as far as this car was concerned it was very much up there in the premium quality sector. Toyota give a 3 years/unlimited mileage warranty, with 3 years roadside assistance and 3 years paint cover, plus a 12 years anti-perforation guarantee. Its diesel engine has exhaust emissions of 120 gm/km, so it falls into Irish road tax band A, the lowest sector, with an annual charge, at present rates, of 160 euro.

Currently the price for this top specification Luna model is Euro 30,595, excluding delivery and associated charges.

Minor servicing is required every 15,000 km (9,320 miles) or once a year, with a major service at twice that interval or every second year.

eugeot has announced a new model naming strategy, that will see each model retaining a permanent identification. From now on, Peugeot models will no longer change name when they undergo a facelift or complete renewal. As an example, the forthcoming 208 will retain its model name for ever more.

Permanently fixing the model identification numbers will help simplify the understanding of the range and assist in growing brand recognition.

Back in 1929, Peugeot began its three digit numbering system, with the unveiling of the new 201. Peugeot's naming system has since been structured around a central zero with the first digit representing the size of the car and the final digit indicating the generation of the model. This system evolved at the end of the 1990s, to include different body types - CC and SW - and

since 2005, a central double zero denotes models with a high structure, such as the 3008 or 5008.

From this point on, all models which already bear a number with a final digit 8, such as the 208, 308 or 3008, will keep their model identification when they are revised or replaced.

However, this year new models designed specifically for emerging international markets, will be identified by numbers ending in 1.

The newly announced Peugeot 301, a compact four door saloon destined for Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Greece, the Middle East, Persian Gulf, African States and Latin American markets, will go on sale in November 2012. It will in time become one of the Marque's best selling vehicles world wide.

The new 301 will have its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September.
